The landmark MedEdge 2012 Life Sciences business summit Thursday in Richmond Hill has more than 300 registrants representing the GTA’s leading medical and health care technology industries, ventureLAB Regional Innovation Centre president and COO Jeremy Laurin said. The one-day conference will deliver a range of benefits to York Region, said Mr. Laurin, whose fledgling non-profit organization is an event co-host. Short-term, the summit provides the opportunity to connect small and medium -sized enterprises with large multinational organizations, he said. Longer term, the event boots York Region’s role as the epicentre for the brightest and best minds in life science. “MedEdge is a catalyst for advancing ideas, connections and innovation into commercial success in York Region’s life sciences sector,” he said. “Purchasing organizations will be exposed to local health care technology companies and make the contacts necessary to build strategic alliances and partnerships.” Delegates will connect with local hospitals, health care organizations and business support networks to explore public-private collaboration and gain insight into Ontario’s health care technology acquisition landscape. Discussions during MedEdge will also address information technology convergence within the local health care sector. Home to 3,600 information and communications technology firms, York Region has the highest per-capita concentration of such companies in Canada, including leading health care IT solution providers such as IBM, Cerner See ‘INNOVATION’, page 5.

Sexting filmmakers using prize for big break BY ADAM MCLEAN

amclean@yrmg.com

In a few days, local filmmaker Kyle Welton will board a plane to New York City to accept a prize that could help his career take flight. Recently, the writer, director and actor won a North American film contest called Bid Vision Empty Wallet, for his project, The Etiquette of Sexting. Written with the help of former Unionville High School pals, Avery Pearson and Adam Risbridger, the trio submitted one filmed scene, along with a full-length

screenplay of their yet-to-be-made film. The topical, romantic comedy, dissects modern relationships and the trials, tribulations and social tools that are often part of today’s personal interactions. The contest’s judging panel last month selected the work by the three York Region natives out of a pool of entries from Canada

and the United States. The top prize includes $100,000 worth of professional consulting, casting and location direction, as well as filming equipment from Canon, to help turn their “big vision” into a full length feature film. Mr. Welton, who directed the short scene and wrote the bulk of the script, said while winning a competition like this hasn’t entirely sunk in, he’s staying focused on the long road ahead to transform the opportunity into a quality product on the See NEW YORK CITY, page 15.
