Lisa Acosta

A born-and-raised Richmondite, high school teacher Lisa Acosta’s efforts to acknowledge the unique challenges of gender and sexual minority students preceded any likeminded policies at the Richmond Board of Education. Acosta grew up in the East Cambie corridor during the 1980s and early 1990s, where thick fog from farmland rolled through neighbourhoods. One of her fondest childhood memories was when the Woodward’s food floor gave out free cookies to kids. After starting her teaching career in the Bronx, she is proud to call this island home again. While Acosta teaches science, math and computer studies at Steveston-London secondary, she makes waves supporting LGBTQ youth across the school district. A tireless advocate, she sponsors the SLSS Rainbow Club, whose students successfully petitioned the board in 2016 to implement a Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Policy. Then, she helped students navigate through opposition from some parents. She and her students are currently involved in the creation of the SOGI policy, which she says has the goal of “creating diverse and inclusive learning environments, where every student feels safe and valued, as their authentic self.”

1. How do you stay healthy in Richmond? Running around, trying to keep up with my sixand two-year-old kids! Getting outdoors is key to keeping my brain sane. Our family has also been enjoying healthy and convenient, food delivery services like Fresh Prep, Jar Stars and Spud. 2. What’s your favourite Richmond park? Terra Nova Park. Zip lines aren’t just for kids. Nature Preschool was magical there for my oldest. 3. What’s top of your bucket list? Travelling back to my favourite places and reexploring them with my kids. Adventuring with my family to new places like the Galapagos and Ice-

land. 4. What’s your favourite food? My mom’s homemade lumpia, which are Filipino spring rolls. 5. What do you like best about Richmond? Richmond is an ideal place to raise a family. We have excellent recreation facilities and community services that are affordable and accessible. Richmond also has top-quality public schools... but maybe I am biased because I teach in one. 6. If Richmond was a celebrity, who would it be?

Chrissy Teigen — a beautiful mix of ethnicities and loves food! 7. What’s your favourite sports team? Most definitely my kids’ teams — Seafair Islanders and Richmond City Chuckers. 8. Best place to take an out-of-town guest? Wandering my neighbourhood of Steveston Village. 9. What other city would you compare Richmond to? I can’t say that I have experienced any other city quite like Richmond!

Rich Dillon

Chances are you’ve seen Rich Dillon around town over the past three decades or so. This McRoberts Striker exemplifies Richmond’s traditional nose-to-thegrindstone mentality. He started working as a teen at Dairy Queen and moved on to a junior management position at the Richlea Square Safeway, while attending nursing school. Dillon furthered his significant mark in the community when he was hired to work in the emergency room of Richmond Hospital. “I have had the privilege of working in various exciting roles... although my most memorable moments at the hospital were the birth of my two kids,” said Dillon. He’s since moved his family out of Richmond, but not off Lulu Island — he’s in Queensborough — so there’s an argument to be made he’s still with us 24/7. “I continue to work and play here today!” said Dillon, who is now director of client relations and risk management at Richmond Hospital. What does that position mean? Well, put it this way. He’s the one (among others) letting everyone know how badly Richmond needs a new tower — and persistence has paid off, as we’ve recently seen. Ever working, Dillon will obtain his MBA this August. 1. How do you stay healthy in Richmond? The family and I certainly spend as much time outside and at the local parks, but as far as fitness goes, I try to get to the Steve Nash Fitness gym at least three mornings a week. 2. What’s your favourite Richmond park? It has to be Terra Nova Adventure Playground. The kids sleep well after going there! 3. What’s top of your bucket list? It has to be traveling to Bora Bora and staying in

veston so I’m going with Finn, the Canucks mascot!

one of those over water bungalows. 4. What’s your favourite food?

7. What’s your favourite sports team?

Definitely sushi. 5. What do you like best about Richmond? It’s flat and so it’s easy to ride a bike. Kidding. It has to be the cultural diversity and learning the traditions of others. 6. If Richmond was a celebrity, who would it be? There’s great whale watching tours from Ste-

One word. Seahawks. 8. Best place to take an out-of-town guest? Steveston. 9. What other city would you compare Richmond to? Richmond’s one of a kind. Nothing compares.

Family wisdom the foundation of Lansdowne Chinese eatery “I have made sure everything stays consistent, in the morning, afternoon and late night,” Wai explains. “The same flavours, the same textures.” He notes he has 30-plus chefs on staff, but has had the same head chef at the helm for more than 20 years. In addition, Wai says the menu features “a traditional dish for people of my generation” with No. 9’s most popular dish: Congee. The rice porridge dish is a staple comfort food for Hong Kong families, he says, providing nourishment for fussy children and low-appetite seniors alike. No. 9 Restaurant serves its congee with century egg (preserved duck egg) and pulled pork, adding protein and even more nutritional benefits to the basic meal. It’s so popular, in fact, the dish is one of the top three finalists in the Richmond News’ 2018 Best of Richmond readers’ choice awards for Best Congee. Also up for top honours for No. 9 Restaurant is Best Chinese Food and Best Chinese BBQ.

O

ne of Richmond’s most popular Chinese restaurants has a simple recipe for success, according to its founder.

“I thought of food that made me happy as a child and I wanted to share those same feelings through great food,” says Wai, who has owned and operated No. 9 Restaurant in Lansdowne since 1998. “Because that’s what comfort food does — reminds you of your youth.” The result is an extensive menu of 300-400 items — Chinese and Western — that is available seven days a week, 24 hours a day. Some of the customer favourites include the “basic, go-to, standard dishes” such as fried rice, barbecue and congee. And there are numerous Late-Night and Tea Time specials. Wai prides himself on quality and consistency. No matter what time of day or night people come in, the meals will be what they expect and have come to crave.

The eatery has a casual and busy atmosphere, which is great for weekend family groups and late-night foodies alike. It’s a great place to have lunch, dinner, snacks after the game and late night food… because they’re always open! And the huge parking lot helps too. No. 9 Restaurant is usually a first stop for many people who have just returned on a trip, as they have missed the comforts of home, Wai says. “We love serving people,” he says. “I’d like to thank the community for its support for over 20 years.” No. 9 Restaurant is located at #812-5300 No. 3 Rd., Richmond. Reach them at 604-278-7700. For a full menu, visit Richmond9.com

Jaime Da Costa

Born and raised in Richmond, Jaime Da Costa knows a thing or two about Richmond and its history. She spent the first nine years of her life growing up in Finn Slough in a small float home built by her father. “I was labeled a “Slough Rat” by classmates at Thomas Kidd,” said Da Costa.

“I spent my days climbing trees and exploring the dykes. “I spent the winters ice-skating on frozen ditches and the summers fishing with my dad and then my grandpa.” At a young age, in 2000, Da Costa started working at Steveston Harbour Authority as a receptionist and knew after her first day that she wanted to one day manage the harbour. After 18 years and upgrades to her education, the opportunity arose with the retirement of Bob Baziuk. Da Costa’s helped handle the global online phenomenon of a sea lion pulling in a little girl at the dock. Things have been busy elsewhere at the harbour, with the construction of a new ice packing plant and the opening last year of a new fish sales dock. And Da Costa continues onward with the harbour’s participation in the Global Ghost Gear Initiative. 1. How do you keep healthy in Richmond?

I would have to say mint chocolate chip ice cream from Purdys.

On my lunch hours you will find me walking the dyke from Trites to No. 3 Road.

5. What do you like best about Richmond?

2. What’s your favourite Richmond park?

The best thing about Richmond is its proximity to the water and the amount of parks and the green space.

South Arm Park. I have many fond memories of my grannie taking me there and playing princess in the concrete castle. 3. What’s top on your bucket list? To one day explore Italy with my daughter. 4. What’s your favourite food?

6. If Richmond was a celebrity, who would it be? Nicole Kidman. Beautiful, elegant, diverse.

Hands down Toronto Raptors (I am a huge basketball fan and was devastated when the Grizzlies left Vancouver). 8. Best place to take an out-of-town guest? Steveston Harbour of course. 9. What other city would you compare Richmond to? There is no city that even comes close to Richmond.

7. What’s your favourite sports team?

Jack Bron

You will see Jack Bron out and about in Richmond, delivering your copies of the Richmond News every week. Although now a proud Richmondite and one of the News’ longest-serving carriers, Bron, now retired, was actually born in France, near Grenoble, in a small town. When finishing school, he became an apprentice in a pastry shop for three years before being conscripted into the army. And once his application as a landed immigrant was approved, he moved to Montreal for two years, which Bron describes as a “beautiful city, but so cold with long winters.” He then moved to Vancouver, indicating that his first few years were difficult because he didn’t speak any English. In 1974, he met his future wife, Louise, and married six months later, citing her English as being a “great help.” In 1983, the couple had their daughter, Michelle. Not long after settling in Richmond, Bron found work with the Cara Group at YVR as a pastry baker. He worked there for 37 years until one day, he was terminated. “So much for loyalty,” said Bron, who had to retire early at 61-yearsold, as it “was hard to find work.” However, his early exit from the treadmill of life allowed him to follow his passion for the outdoors with canoeing, hiking, fishing and rock climbing top of the agenda. “B.C. is a great place for these activities,” added Bron. 1. How do you stay healthy in Richmond?

5. What do you like best about Richmond?

Lots of walking with my daughter’s two-year-old black Lab, Lily.

I like that Richmond is very multicultural.

2. What is your favourite Richmond park? Garry Point. 3. What tops your bucket list?

6. What’s your favourite sports team? Vancouver Canucks. 7. Best place to take outof-town guest?

Krystal Grimm

Krystal Grimm, almost literally, lives and breathes bunnies. The born and raised Richmondite is the director and co-founder of the Bandaids for Bunnies (BFB) Society, a rabbit rescue that she’s been running for the last six years in her own backyard, along with the help of family and friends. Grimm takes in sick, injured and at-risk bunnies, gets them medical attention, spays/neuters them and finds them foster or forever homes. Animals, says Grimm, have been her passion for as long as she can remember, although, not surprisingly, she especially loved bunnies. However, it wasn’t until she worked at a vet clinic that worked with the local shelter that she realized what struggles the bunnies living on our streets had. Grimm wanted to try to help and give them a better chance at life and, thus, started BFB, which is currently fundraising to build new cages and to help with its $5,000 vet bill. As such, she is urging everyone to get in contact with BFB’s Facebook page or email them at BFBS@hotmail.ca. 1. How do you stay healthy in Richmond? Walking on the dyke or cleaning rabbit cages. 2. What’s your favourite Richmond park? Lots of parks in Richmond are dump sites for bunnies, so it’s sometimes sad for me to visit those parks as I want to take them all home. If I had to choose, I’d say Garry Point. 3. What’s top of your bucket list? See the Northern Lights. 4. What’s your favourite food? Grilled asparagus. 5. What do you like best about Richmond? The dykes. 6. If Richmond was a celebrity, who would it be? I have no idea, LOL, I’ve never really thought of it as a person. 7. Best place to take an out-of-town guest? Steveston. 8. What other city would you compare Richmond to? I think we are one of a kind; there is nowhere I’ve been that can compare.

Sarah Leamon

When it comes to giving her opinion, Richmond criminal defense lawyer Sarah Leamon is not backward at coming forward. Often in the media spotlight — through her newspaper contributions and TV appearances — Leamon practises both criminal and administrative law out of her Cedarbridge Way office, a stone’s throw from Richmond Provincial Court. However, it’s her work outside of court that’s also put Leamon on the map lately. She’s extremely active in her community and has been key in establishing a number of important non-profit organizations and currently acts as board chair of the PACE Society, in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. In November, 2016, Leamon co-founded The Coven Club, a non-profit that focuses on social equality and the empowerment of women and girls. And, more recently, she founded the Women’s Association of Criminal Lawyers British Columbia (WACL-BC), which is a peer-driven organization dedicated to the advancement of women in criminal law. In establishing WACL, Leamon drew attention to apparent sexism and discrimination against women in courtrooms across B.C. She is fighting to make her profession more comfortable and more inclusive of women and, with many more women than men ditching criminal law as a career, hopes to have gender parity someday. 1. How do you stay healthy in Richmond? I always watch what I eat, and make sure to get enough fruits and veggies. I love going to Kins Farm Market to check out their colorful, fresh produce. I also make sure to get at least half an hour of exercise in every day. 2. What’s your favourite Richmond park? I love the Richmond Nature Trails. They are a great place to get lost in the great outdoors! 3. What’s top of your bucket list? I always wanted to go swimming with the famous swimming pigs in Exuma, and just last month I was able to do that...so that’s one major thing off my bucket list. Next up: travelling to India and seeing the Taj Mahal. 4. What’s your favourite food? Ice cream! 5. What do you like best about Richmond?

I love all the delicious food and fantastic restaurants that you just can’t find anywhere else. 6. What’s your favourite and least favourite court? My least favourite court would be Chilliwack...but only because the drive from Richmond to Chilliwack is so long and it ends up costing so much in gas! Favourite court is Richmond, of course. 7. If Richmond was a celebrity, who would it be? Keanu Reeves. 8. Best place to take an out-of-town guest? I would take them to Steveston to get some fresh fish & chips and explore the area. There are so many cute shops and things to see! 9. What other city would you compare Richmond to? Nothing compares to unique Richmond.

Carolyn Hart

On any given day, especially during the hockey season, there is a good chance you will see Carolyn Hart at the Richmond Ice Centre. This “super volunteer” has poured a tremendous amount of time into overseeing the Richmond Minor Hockey Association as president for the past four years and will continue on in an executive role with the newly merged Richmond-Seafair association. Whether it’s spending an afternoon with her husband, Richard, talking to families at a “First Shift” session, or scorekeeping at a tournament, Hart approaches her role with tremendous passion. She strives to make hockey accessible to Richmond families while embracing the city’s diversity. Her ties to Richmond extend to her childhood when her father worked in the city as an elementary school teacher. Away from the rink, she held variety of positions with the Bank of Montreal, including manager of the main office in Burnaby before the birth of her second son.

Thank You RICHMOND

for voting for us as one of the top 3 restaurants in the categories of “Best Kid Friendly Restaurant” and “Best Meal Under Ten Dollars”

Armed with degree from UBC, her second career focussed on child and family literacy. For more than a decade, Hart was self-employed and offered literacy programs at Richmond community centres. She also worked as a tutor and led professional development and parent education workshops throughout southwest B.C. 1. How do you stay healthy in Richmond? I love to walk in our community. It’s not only good for my physical health, it is also a great opportunity to gain perspective and think about challenges I’m experiencing. 2. What’s your favourite Richmond park? Definitely Steveston Park. I have many memories of time spent at the park with my two sons including one very rainy day where we were the only ones there! 3. What’s top of your bucket list? I don’t have a “bucket list.” I love travelling and attending theatre and concerts. I can’t imagine my life without volunteering. 4. What’s your favourite food? Sharing a great seafood meal with friends while enjoying a glass of B.C. wine. 5. What do you like best about

Richmond? I’ve had the good fortune to know many wonderful people in our city. I like the people best! 6. If Richmond was a celebrity, who would it be? Tom Hanks. Whether starring in a comedy or a drama, he demonstrates an amazing range.

2OI8

7. What’s your favourite sports team? I love all Richmond Minor teams but especially enjoyed cheering for my son’s team, the Richmond Minor Juvenile A1s. 8. Best place in Richmond? Definitely Steveston Harbour at sunset. 9. What other city would you compare Richmond to? There’s no place like home for me.

Calista Espinosa

From a soft-spoken teen to a national champion wrestler, Calista Espinosa’s transformation once she gets on the competitive mats is quite remarkable. The Grade 12 student has enjoyed another outstanding season — winning her second straight National Cadet championship in Edmonton and also crowned provincial high school champion for the first time in her career.

WE LOVE YOU! Thanks for your

Living in Richmond since she was five, jiu-jitsu was her speciality at Apex Martial Arts for seven years. Once she started high school at St. Pat’s Regional secondary, Calista made the switch and joined Bhullar Wrestling — the renowned family-run club on the Bhullar’s Sidaway Road farm — working with Jag Bhullar. Through plenty of hard work and dedication, she became one of the top youth wrestlers in the country, representing Canada at international events. The next stage of her career will take place in Abbotsford starting in September after being recruited by the University of the Fraser Valley. Still, her heart will remain in Richmond, thankful for the coaches who taught her to stay “true to my goals and my feet planted on the ground through the tough times and victories.” 1. How do you stay healthy in Richmond?

Richmond?

Richmond has one of the best wrestling clubs in B.C. Bhullar Wrestling incorporates physically fitness and mental resilience in training young people to wrestle.

6. If Richmond was a celebrity, who would it be?

2. What’s your favourite Richmond park? It would have to be my local park in South Arm, where I learned to swim outdoors and where I walk and run my dogs. 3. What’s top of your bucket list? One day I hope to say that I’ve tried every food booth at the Richmond Night Market. 4. What’s your favourite food? I love sushi and it’s probably because I live in a city loaded with great sushi restaurants. 5. What do you like best about

Tony Wong-Hen

Tony Wong-Hen has been calling Richmond home since emigrating with his family from Mauritius when he was five. Sports has been a huge part of this proud Steveston Packer alumni’s life — first as an athlete and now giving back as a volunteer coach and helping run one of the city’s most popular summer events. It was soon after graduating, Wong-Hen and his high school basketball teammates and good friends Bruce Watson, Bira Bindra and TJ Johal launched the Dolphin Park Classic. The 33rd edition of the outdoor tournament goes July.

2. What’s your favourite Richmond park? Minoru Park. When I was young, I ran track and field there. I also watched Seth play hockey for Seafair at Minoru Arenas and now watch Nora play field hockey. 3. What’s top of your bucket list? Travel. I have been all over the world and we are heading to Sydney in the summer of 2018 and next year to Mauritius.

6. If Richmond was a celebrity, who would it be? Jackie Chan; dynamic, multi-talented, recognized worldwide and Asian… 7. What’s your favourite sports team? The Richmond Field Hockey Association’s U15 Flickers (Nora’s team). Pro teams: Toronto Raptors and Seattle Seahawks. 8. Best place to take an out-oftown guest? Steveston.

4. What’s your favourite food? I love all foods. In Richmond, you can’t go wrong with Chinese food. Richmond also has many incredible international flavours. 5. What do you like best about Richmond?

9. What other city would you compare Richmond to? There’s no city in the world that I’ve been to that compares to Richmond.

Alice Poon

Born and educated in Hong Kong, Alice Poon received a bilingual education (Chinese and English) and full immersion in both Chinese and Western cultures while growing up. She has long cherished a dream of writing historical fiction set in old China. Chinese history, told through Jin Yong’s set of novels about ancient times, always fascinated and enamored Poon during her childhood. In 2007, the Canadian Book Review Annual selected her non-fiction title Land and the Ruling Class in Hong Kong, published in 2005, as the Editor’s Choice (Scholarly). The Chinese edition then became a bestseller and won the Hong Kong Book Prize in 2011. In 2014, Poon published a semi-autobiographical novel Fated and Fateless, which is set in colonial Hong Kong prior to the handover to China. Her first historical novel, The Green Phoenix: A Woman Who Re-made Asia, Empress Xiaozhuang, was published in September 2017. Prior to her writing career, which included a stint in financial journalism, Poon had worked in the property development field in Hong Kong and Canada for a long time. Currently she lives in Richmond and is working on her next old China historical novel. 1. How do you keep healthy in Richmond? I use the gym at my apartment complex for exercise three times a week, and I take walks by the riverside at least once a week. 2. What’s your favourite Richmond park? Garry Point Park. 3. What’s top on your bucket list? To become an inspiring historical novelist. 4. What’s your favourite food? Singapore laksa at Kari House in Steveston Village. 5. What do you like best about Richmond? The fall sunset view from the riverside boardwalk. 6. If Richmond was a celebrity, who would it be? This is a hard question… maybe Nicholas

Tse, the Hong Kong-born singer, songwriter and actor who grew up and was educated in Vancouver. He, like Richmond, is an epitome of Chinese and Western culture crossover. 7. What’s your favourite sports team? Sorry, I don’t have one – I am not into sports. 8. Best place to take an out-oftown guest? The Fisherman’s Wharf. 9. What other city would you compare Richmond to? I would compare it to Hong Kong, as both cities are vibrantly cosmopolitan and enjoy a bi-cultural identity. 10. Q: What’s your favourite book? A: There is more than one! Leo Tolstoy’s War and Peace is one of my favourites.

Thank you for your votes Richmond!

Nan Baardsen

Nan Baardsen has had a wonderful, and blessed, nine decades — here’s to the tenth. As the director of the Minoru Seniors Glee Club, a 40 member-strong group that performs at care homes and seniors’ residences throughout the year, Baardsen has always had her little suitcase in tow filled with sheet music, concert programs and rehearsal schedules. Born on March 1, 1926 in Clydebank, Scotland as the eighth of nine children, Baardsen’s teen years were notably overshadowed by World War II. But at the same time, her parents indulged her musical passion and vocal abilities, and launched her into her lifelong loveaffair with music. Baardsen worked in the civil service and performed regularly in local musicals for 27 years in the UK, before she immigrated to Vancouver in 1969. Here, she started working in the insurance industry and continued being active in the musical scene and various local choirs, before settling in Richmond in 2003 and joining the Glee Club, becoming its director in 2011. Baardsen, 92, is also an active volunteer for many city events and served at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics. She attributes a healthy and happy life to a positive take on life — and her sense of humour. “I see humour in everything,” said Baardsen. “If you handle things with humour, you get much better reactions than bullying and yelling.” 1. How do you keep healthy in Richmond?

6. If Richmond was a celebrity, who would it be?

Moderation in everything (except cheese cake!)

Martha Stewart — Richmond is kept so clean and tidy.

2. What’s your favourite Richmond park?

7. What’s your favourite sports team?

Garry Point. 3. What’s top on your bucket list? Dancing at my 100th birthday bash. 4. What’s your favourite food? Fresh salmon off the boats — preferably baked. 5. What do you like best about Richmond? The abundance of natural beauty that surrounds us.

Have to say Canucks — or my grandkids won’t talk to me. 8. Best place to take an out-oftown guest? Steveston for history, scenery and food 9. What other city would you compare Richmond to? None can compare — White Rock doesn’t really come close. 10. What’s your favourite song? “It’s a wonderful world.”

Dakota Chan

Don’t tell Dakota Chan you need to specialize in one sport to achieve the highest levels. This Grade 12 student at McMath secondary is proof participating in multiple sports will only make you a better all-around athlete and thrive on the biggest of stages. She fell in love with athletics at a young age and was encouraged by her parents to participate in a variety of activities. Chan did just that, excelling in soccer, field hockey and swimming. Once in high school, she added to her growing resumé as a member of McMath’s basketball, cross-country and track and field teams. She recently earned the Richmond Female High School Athlete of the Year Award. Although she earned all-star honours at nationals in field hockey, it’s soccer where Chan is putting her focus at the collegiate level, attending the University of Nebraska next fall on a scholarship where she will study Applied Climate Science in the College of Agriculture. She is also currently playing for the TSS FC Rovers in their inaugural season in the Women’s Premier Soccer League. She loves to volunteer at Mike Quinn’s Summer Soccer Camps, and is also coaching a Richmond Field Hockey Club team this spring. 1. How do you stay healthy in Richmond? I swim at Steveston Pool. Geling Jiang

Geling Jiang, an award-winning musician specializing in Chinese plucked instruments, hit the Vancouver music scene after moving to Richmond in 2004 from Wuhan, China. Jiang joined several contemporary music ensembles based in Vancouver and performed string instruments such as the Zheng, Pipa, Sanxian and Ruan across Canada, the US, the Netherlands, Malaysia, the Philippines and China. She has also been a guest musician for the Vancouver Symphony, the University of British Columbia (UBC) Symphony, the Elektra Women’s Choir, and has been a Chinese music instrument coach at the UBC School of Music. Playing instruments with thousands of years of history, Jiang does not limit herself to traditional Chinese music, but instead, always experiments with new techniques and music styles. She is also a good improviser among different musicians, who believes that Chinese instruments can fit in to and add a vibe to any orchestra made up of other instruments. This year, Jiang founded a Richmond-based Zheng trio, ‘21 Strings Plus,’ to perform in the community alongside two other musicians. She is also the Plucked String Section tutor of the BC Chinese Youth Orchestra. 1. How do you stay healthy in Richmond? Balwant Sanghera

Few people are embedded in the Richmond community more than Balwant Sanghera, a well-respected educator, community activist and bridge builder. He is presently president of the Punjabi Language Education Association of Canada, and an executive member of the India Cultural Centre of Canada Gurdwara Nanak Niwas. Lynda Pasacreta

Lynda Pasacreta retired from a career in sales, marketing, promotion and customer service in 2012. Her last hurrah as president and CEO of the Better Business Bureau of British Columbia was a great jumping off point for finding a peaceful and healthy retirement lifestyle. Fairly soon after retiring, Pasacreta joined the Richmond Garden Club, signed up as a volunteer to work in the gardens at Paulik Park and applied to the City of Richmond to restore a small traffic roundabout located close to home. Fast forward six years, Pasacreta is now the president of the Richmond Garden Club which has grown substantially in members in the last few years. Partnerships have been established with Richmond Food Security Society, Terra Nova Sharing Farm, City of Richmond along with other groups. The collective focus has been to educate and demonstrate best practices in protecting our environment and beautifying the community. Through Pasacreta’s initiatives and countless volunteer hours, the Richmond Garden Club has increased its profile in the community through gardening activities in Paulik Park, the little urban rooftop garden at Richmond Cultural Centre, development of a meditation garden at St. Alban Anglican Church, refurbished flower container beds on the Steveston boardwalk for Steveston Harbour Authority. 1. How do you stay healthy in Richmond? Daily heavy duty gardening in my own garden and many other gardening projects related to the Richmond Garden Club. Walking an hour every day. 2. Matt Fisher

Matt Fisher, Richmond Olympic Oval coach, brought the 2018 Winter Olympics to Richmond through his social media posts. It was through his photos posted to Instagram that Richmondites could get a little taste of what the Canadian Olympic snowboard team was up to, all the way in PyeongChang. Born and raised in Victoria, Fisher spent most of his younger years playing all different sports with a focus on soccer and rugby. Upon graduating from high school he had a significant knee injury playing soccer that altered his life and career path. While he didn’t know it at the time, it would be the catalyst that would eventually land him in Richmond and focus on helping other athletes. After helping to open the Pacific Institute for Sport Excellence in Victoria, Fisher transitioned to the Canadian Sport Institute (CSI) which relocated their offices to the Richmond Olympic Oval. His time with CSI was spent primarily working with the women’s national soccer team prior to their bronze medal run in the 2012 London Olympics, as well as the Canada snowboard national freestyle team. Between 2012 and 2016, the majority of his time was spent on the road with Canada Snowboard, which culminated in the opportunity to go to the 2014 Sochi Olympics as well as the 2018 PyeongChang games. In January of 2016 he became head strength and conditioning coach for the Oval’s High Performance Department. This position gave him the opportunity to continue working with national teams, while also indulging in his true passion, which includes working with athletes and hopefully helping them to avoid injury and achieve their dreams both on and off the court/ice/field. 1. In a nutshell, how was your experience at the Olympics?

a small part of my experience with people from around the world.

My experience was amazing, with all the highs as well as the lows you would expect. We won a gold, two silvers and a bronze which made for a very successful outing for Canada Snowboard!

3. How do you stay healthy in Richmond?

2. How did it feel to share your experience with your (and the Olympic Oval’s) followers at home through Instagram? Since I am not a huge social media user, it was amazing to me the number of new connections that formed through my Instagram takeover. Not only did I feel like I made some great connections with fellow Canadians at home, I felt like was able to share

I live in Vancouver’s Olympic Village, so I like to use my commute to start my day off on the right foot. For me, mental health is just as important as physical, so I try to listen to a meditation podcast on my Canada Line ride out. Then I will either walk or skateboard from Lansdowne Station to the Oval. 4. What’s your favourite Richmond park? Terra Nova Adventure Park says it all with its sign suggesting it’s for “off leash kids.”

5. What’s on the top of your bucket list? I would love to go back to Japan. 6. What’s your favourite food? My mother grew up in East Los Angeles so, despite her Japanese lineage, I grew up eating a lot of Mexican food. 7. What’s your favourite sports team? I’m going to be broad here and say any Canadian national team. 8. What city would you compare Richmond to? Burlington, Ontario.

Barry Hastings

When it comes to keeping Richmondites safe on the water, Barry Hastings is one of the best, if not the best. After all, one of the Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue boats is named after him — the B.R. Hastings. Born in Richmond in 1942, marine safety has defined Hastings’ life in so many ways. “It was forests and lots of bogs then. My future took me to being a professional radio officer serving various locations in B.C., and serving at Coast Guard ships and Coast Guard radio stations,” explained Hastings, a 35 year veteran of the volunteer-driven RCMSAR Station 10 in Steveston. In 1971, Hastings was stationed with the Coast Guard in Richmond and moved offices to Vancouver in 1973. “Although I served on a few of these air stations, my love was the marine side. I transferred into Vancouver Coast Guard radio 1973... I joined the Steveston Auxiliary in 1983.” Hastings has three children who graduated high school here and when he wasn’t with family, he has dedicated endless hours serving the community on the water. For instance, he’s logged over 600 marine rescues and taskings out of Richmond. That doesn’t include the bulk of his time training other rescuers and keeping the station in tip-top shape. 1. How do you stay healthy in Richmond? Good parks and pleasant trails along the Fraser River for walking. 2. What’s your favourite Richmond park? Garry Point/Britannia Shipyards 3. What’s top of your bucket list? Go up to Lone Bute BC (100 Mile House), go fishing, drink beer at my daughter’s pub (Iron Horse)

Lily Yuan

Lily Yuan is one of the fittest moms in Richmond. Her personal trainer said she has great muscle grouping and should try body building, so Yuan, a mom of two and owner of an art studio, found herself another passion. When she is preparing for a show, she spends one and a half hours on weight training every day plus more than one hour on a step machine. And her daily meal consists of plain boiled chicken or fish with vegetables and no seasoning. And it’s not all for nothing. Yuan won fourth place at the B.C. Amateur Body Building Competition last November, which qualifies her to be a finalist in the Quebec national competition in July. “It really brings my confidence to a whole different level. My body is in better shape and I’m always full of energy,” said Yuan. “Everyone can become a body builder and shine on the stage if they want to.” Yuan had been busy helping out her husband’s lumber business and raising her daughters since they moved to Canada from Beijing, China in 2008. After both her daughters went to elementary school, she decided to follow her own interests. Apart from bodybuilding, she also started her own art studio, teaching children how to paint, and a non-profit children’s choir, which performs a lot in the community. Last year, Yuan raised funds and produced a Disney children’s musical “Aladdin Jr.,” which was a sold-out success at the Gateway Theatre. 1. How do you keep healthy in Richmond?

Keegan Varley

Keegan Varley is a friendly young man who always has an extra smile to share. Born in Richmond and graduated from Hugh Boyd, Varley has enjoyed exploring the local spots with his three siblings, becoming quite the local himself. A dynamic individual, he has grown up riding horses and playing many sports over the years through Special Olympics BC, continuing to play floor hockey, baseball, bowling, practice martial arts, track and field, and swim. Over the winter of 2017, Varley, his big brother Zach and his mom Lynn teamed up to launch a series of greeting cards based on Varley’s drawings. What started with a holiday craft fair has carried on into a fun and exciting project for the trio, fuelled by an incredibly positive response from the community. His cards are now being stocked in various stores around Vancouver! Varley lives in Steveston and spends his days volunteering with the RCMP, the Vancouver Aquarium and the Regional Animal Protection Society. He recently participated in his second theatrical production with his friend and roommate Stephen. Varley says, “I like to keep fit by attending track and field, martial arts, floor hockey, baseball, swimming, and bowling. Wendel Genosa is a local photographer who graduated Emily Carr University in 2015. Her passion is portrait work so she jumped at the chance to take photos of some of Richmond’s standouts for our Best of Richmond section.

Thank you for voting Stars of Tomorrow Early Learning (SOTEL) as the

Genosa’s final university project was a series of portraits she took of people in their most intimate of settings — their bedrooms. For our feature on her bedroom project, look online at Richmond-News.com for “Letting a stranger into your bedroom.” Genosa went to JN Burnett Secondary and currently works at the Richmond Society for Community Living with youth living with developmental disabilities, a job she finds as inspiring as photography. In fact, one of the subjects in our Best Of Richmond series is one of the many clients from the program she has been moved by.
