From nursing to birding: Richmond senior embraces retirement

Birdwatching helps a Richmond resident build new connections and stay healthy.

Turning 65 was more than just a date on the calendar for a Richmond resident – it was a milestone celebration.

Long-time Richmond resident Anabelle Wee said she and her husband have been counting the days until they could both enjoy the “full senior life” together.

While some businesses start offering seniors’ discounts at 55, Wee said she still often gets questioned about her age.

“I’ve been wanting to be official for a long time because some places question my age because I’ve always looked younger than my age,” Wee told the Richmond News.

She even stopped colouring her hair to avoid being asked for ID.

Wee retired in January 2018 after working for 40 years in the nursing profession, and when asked whether she ever considered coming out of retirement, it was a hard “no.”

“I don’t miss it, because it was a very demanding, gruelling, challenging and stressful profession. Kudos to the young people who have carried on the torch,” she said.

For the last seven years, Wee has taken up hobbies such as walking outdoors, birding and photography.

Her photography and birding interests began during COVID-19, when it became a popular activity for people who could

not enjoy indoor group activities.

She told the News birding “opened new doors” for her during her retirement life – being outdoors and learning about birds stimulated her mind.

“I couldn’t name a bird aside from the regular seagull or robin, but now I can identify more than I ever have,” said Wee.

“Being a photographer and a birder gets me out and staying active. I normally do not like walking since I’ve always been more of a group sports person.”

Retirement has been great, but Wee said she had to adapt to not seeing people she normally would at work.

“That’s one thing I did not realize, that once you stop working, suddenly your world changes. When you retire, that’s a big component of your life that’s gone. It can be lonely if you don’t replace it with something.”

Birding has given Wee a community where she meets other enthusiasts

and also learns from other birders in Richmond to help “replace the camaraderie from the workplace.”

“Some have even helped me discover other animals like the rare white wagtail bird that was in Steveston this month,” said Wee.

While birding has become Wee’s world every day, her husband negotiated a deal to make sure they can spend time together without the camera and birds.

“Friday is our designated husband and wife special day – a bird-free day,” laughed Wee.

Being a senior living in Richmond also has its perks, like the discounted meals at Minoru Centre for Active Living and monthly pet supply deals at Bosley’s.

What Wee enjoys the most was learning about the free ferry rides as a senior.

“You just have to pay for your car, but it’s amazing. While some places start deals at 55 years old, I can fully enjoy all the perks now.”

Richmond seniors SUPPORT THEIR PEERS

Peer counsellors get extensive training to help other seniors going through a difficult time.

Volunteer peer counsellors in Richmond are helping about 25 seniors a year who are going through a difficult period in their lives.

The Seniors Peer Counselling program has been going on for about 20 years in Richmond, run by Richmond Cares, Richmond Gives (RCRG), and its coordinator Carol Dickson said not only the clients but the volunteer peer counsellors have reported the positive impact it’s had on their lives.

“Generally, if (seniors) feel supported through the program, that’s a huge success,” Dickson said.

All of the seniors programs at RCRG are aimed at keeping seniors in their homes for as long as possible, and keeping them safer by linking them to services they need.

The premise of seniors peer counselling is that seniors feel more comfortable with someone who is older and understands age-related issues.

The peer counsellors provide emotional support “so people know they’re not forgotten – their feelings are important,” Dickson said, and to “truly understand where the senior is coming from.”

Currently, 14 peer counselling volunteers make time every week to visit a senior, usually in their home, to provide support.

Dickson explained that peer counselling isn’t a substitute for professional counselling.

But the preparation to be a peer counsellor is extensive.

The volunteers receive 44 hours of training over a period of 11 sessions, and the training covers a wide range of topics such as ageism, racism, substance misuse, suicide and depression.

There’s a strong emphasis on empathy and being in the seniors’ shoes.

“We’re trying to imagine what they’re going through so that caring comes through,” Dickson said.

Offering a listening ear and empathy for whatever a senior might be going through is the central component of seniors peer counselling.

Dickson hopes to start recruitment in the spring for more peer counsellors. She said they are always looking for

more male peer counsellors and people who can speak a variety of languages, such as Spanish, Russian and Ukrainian.

Generally, RCRG is looking for volunteers who want a meaningful, personal experience and are openminded and empathetic, Dickson explained.

RCRG asks for a year’s commitment from their peer counsellors.

Clients often come to the peer counselling program through Vancouver Coastal Health, but any senior who feels they need support can self-refer through RCRG.

For more information, contact Dickson at RCRG at 604-279-7020.
