WHAT’S COOKING

THE CHURCHILL OPENS DOWNTOWN

Construction has officially completed on the Valley’s first micro marketplace built of repurposed shipping containers, and the venue opens this month. Named for the Evans Churchill neighborhood where it will reside, The Churchill brings a community-driven mantra and attitude across its 14,000-square-foot location, using 19 repurposed shipping containers. The Churchill’s tenant mix includes a hand-picked assortment of Arizona-based businesses, offering plenty of opportunity for supporting local artisans and purveyors. Additionally, each business is committed to devoting a set amount of time to community service efforts every month as part of their involvement in the project. The following concepts are set to open inside The Churchill this September: Breadwinner restaurant; The Brill Line craft brews; Pobrecito cocktail concept; Central Mexico food concept, Provecho; Freak Brothers Pizza; health-conscious spot, Foxy Fruit; wine destination, Sauvage; State Forty Eight; Cosas boutique; and Gather retail spot. The Churchill’s courtyard area will have seating for 300 guests and a second-story rooftop deck that offers sweeping views of the surrounding city. A growing collection of local art and murals adorn the walls throughout the space, while handcrafted furnishings give locals and guests a place to pull up a chair and simply hang. www.thechurchillphx.com.

By now, executive chef Alex Stratta is known for his cooking class series held at Match Restaurant & Lounge. He’s at it again, preparing to teach his upcoming fall and winter monthly series. The classes will kick off Saturday, Oct. 6, as Stratta takes guests through the process of preparing and serving game meats that are perfectly paired with produce of the fall harvest. On Nov. 3 and Dec. 1, the fun continues with his two-part holiday cooking class series. Stratta will introduce guests to festive dishes such as spiced butternut squash soup, roasted Brussels sprouts, ginger-date cake and more. Each class will take place from 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and is $50 per person, and space is limited. Reservations can be made by calling 602.875.8080.
