ABC’s The Bachelor has been a huge phenomenon since its first season in 2002. While many men have proposed at the end of the season on both the original show and the female suitor version, The Bachelorette, it’s not always rainbows and true love after the cameras stop rolling. Thankfully for the most recent Bachelor, Arie Luyendyk Jr. and his now-fiancee, Lauren Burnham, it has been pure bliss. Things are just getting started for the pair, and right here in the Valley. Luyendyk is a race car driver and real estate agent from Scottsdale, and he and Lauren are settling down in Arcadia. Get to know the couple beyond The Bachelor spotlight on page 24. Speaking of spotlight, you’ll find a different type of “rising star” to take note of this month: mezcal. Derived from agave much like tequila, the spirit is making its way into cocktails everywhere lately. Check out our favorites on page 64. Also in the F&B world, we set our sights on two new spots in town. On page 65, we’re sharing a friend chicken sandwich from The Larry, and on page 74 you’ll find the lowdown on the new Alice in Wonderland-inspired bar, Hatter and Hare. Continuing within the restaurant industry, this issue you’ll meet seven GMs who are making everything happen behind the scenes at local restaurants and bars. How do they do it all? Where does their love for the industry come from? Turn to page 28 to find out. In terms of trends this month, we’re showcasing tribal decor (page 59) to give your home a little culture, and the hottest prints of the season on page 57 (insider tip: it’s OK to mix and match patterns this season!). Additionally, we share some of the best live music spots in town to catch some local and national acts, and maybe even dance like nobody is watching on page 51. Don’t be afraid to show off your moves this month! Best,

ROMANCING THE INDUSTRY “New York Times” best-selling author Kristen Ashley falls in love with indie publishing

Kristen Ashley is an author who is doing things on her own terms, much in the same way her romance novel heroines live their fiction lives. The New York Times best-selling author now has 60 novels under her belt and after selling 3 million books that have been translated into 13 languages, Ashley’s foray into self-publishing has proven to be a rewarding experience.

Writing her own Story Even as a youngster, Ashley had the makings of a romance novel author. She just knew it was her calling. “I wanted to write since I was about 12 years old,” Ashley says. “I was a voracious reader from a very young age. I started reading Harlequin Presents books at a young age and my mom

Pulse UP CLOSE of her books are independently published. Thus, the hybrid author is an advocate for indie publishing. “You used to have to play by the rules, because the publishers were the gatekeepers,” she says. “When you’re independently publishing you don’t have that gatekeeper and that’s why indie publishing has flourished. Now, you have all these amazing unique voices telling extraordinary stories and don’t have anything holding them back.” Her love for indie publishing started way back, when she tried for 15 years to get published in New York but was met with rejection. “Fortunately for me, when I was ready to roll, there was Kindle Direct Publishing. I also publish print through Creative Space,” Ashley explains. She credits her tenacity and hard work with finally being able to get the control she craved through self-publishing her books.

Achieving Creative Freedom

was a romance book reader. Of course, they were pretty tame back then, but I just knew I wanted to write romance novels.” She grew up in Indiana and lived in Denver, Colorado and England before moving to Phoenix. Ashley holds a four-year degree with majors in political science, women’s studies, French and Spanish. Although she originally thought she would be an attorney, her ongoing passion for storytelling and writing about romance was too great. “When I was in my late 20s, I took a refresher English grammar class with a girlfriend,” she explains. “The first thing the professor said was, ‘There are no rules in the English language,’ which is not what you would expect in a grammar class.” The point the teacher was making was that language has changed and he encouraged his class to write from a “you just be you” perspective. The advice stuck. Up until that point, Ashley would craft her stories based on the formulaic approach she saw in earlier romance novels she read. “After I took that class and started to fiddle around with my own stories, both the ideas came together, and my voice just opened up. You don’t have to play by the rules,” she says.

Independent Endeavors Ashley found her groove in indie publishing. Though she has had books published through New York publishers, the vast majority

Ashley’s romance novels are a bit different than others. “I have a very distinct voice,” she explains. “Back in the day, it was unusual for romance novels to be written in first person. I not only write in first person, but I write kind of in the stream of consciousness of the heroine, so you’re in her head.” Her books also feature a variety of personalities, including some heroes and heroines that are in their late 40s. “I have diverse characters,” Ashely explains. “My flagship series has gay, African-American and Middle Eastern characters. It’s a reflection of our world.” In creating the world within her novels, the author takes romantic inspiration from everywhere. “It [my inspiration] can come from absolutely anything. I could see a man walking down the street and like the grace of his gait and a story will blossom from that… It could be a song, lyrics to a song, television, movies or another book,” she explains. “I’m re-watching The West Wing right now and I want to write a romance about the president.” She says that she has nearly an endless supply of novel ideas in her head and finding the time to get them all out is challenging. Her most recent novel, Wild Like the Wind was just released. The book is part of Ashley’s Chaos Series, about the boys of the Chaos Motorcycle Club. “It’s the story of the MC brother, Hound and his love affair with Keely who was married to one of the other brothers who died in a war the club was having. It’s a very poignant story and I adore it.” The author cherishes all of her works and refers to them as her “babies.” “I’m kind of a control freak,” Ashley finishes. “I want to take care of my work and nurture my readers. When you independently publish, you have control over every aspect of that.” To learn more about Kristen Ashley and purchase her books, visit www.kristenashley.net.

HOMEGROWN

Local sibling business owners encourage others to enjoy their product proudly

BY LYNETTE CARRINGTON / PHOTO BY MARK MORGAN

Chelsea and Dustin Johnson have founded budding business, Huxton. The siblings are proud to be growing a lifestyle brand that is part of the unique cannabis business community. Their mother had been in a boating accident and suffered a knee injury several years ago resulting in nerve damage, a lot of pain and increasing dependence on narcotics. “We said, ‘Mom, we have to do something different. Why don’t we look at cannabis and see if it works?’” Chelsea explains. Initially there was no retail location for their mother to get medicinal marijuana. The siblings opened retail dispensary store, Monarch in 2013 in Scottsdale. Their mom was their first patient and with the help of cannabis, she was off prescribed narcotics in nine months. “We noticed most customers that were purchasing smokable flower products were buying it based on strain, but what they were really looking for was understanding how that product was going to affect them,” Dustin says. Founded in 2015, Huxton became the first branded flower product on the market, and is a lifestyle and experience-based brand aimed at destigmatizing an industry. “We wanted to bring consistency to the marketplace,” Chelsea says of Huxton. “If a patient walked into one dispensary and purchased something they loved, we wanted them to walk into a dispensary anywhere in the Valley and purchase that same product.” Traditional cannabis products are identified as hybrid, sativa or indica, but Huxton seeks to define the user’s experience. Rise, HiFi and Zen are three product series within the Huxton line. Rise is a sessionable series designed to keep people uplifted and productive, HiFi is a more potent blend that combines energy with euphoria and Zen is for relaxation and rejuvenation. Huxton also offers discreet accessories including branded hats, shirts and candles. “Chelsea and I realize there’s been an image misconception in the space where people have traditional perceptions of who smokes cannabis.” Dustin says of a patient community he says includes many professionals. “We have a unique opportunity with an industry that hasn’t existed before but has products that have been consumed for thousands of years.” For more information, visit www.huxtonusa.com.

ORCHESTRATING ARTISTRY Taura-Vivian Holland expresses her creativity at monOrchid

BY LYNETTE CARRINGTON / PHOTO BY CLAUDIA JOHNSTONE

Creative director and current curator at monOrchid, Taura-Vivian Holland is an inspirational creative who has an acute eye for art and aesthetics. In her position at downtown’s monOrchid, she has found her groove that allows her edgy-but-chic viewpoint to shine. Growing up in Los Angeles and living in Phoenix and Denver before bouncing back to the Valley again last year has had a creative impact on Holland. “Growing up in LA you’re exposed to so many styles and cultures that it’s easy to express yourself without having to feel any type of remorse, if you will,” Holland explains. “Everything is accepted, and it was fun growing up in that environment.” Holland is in charge of the art gallery at monOrchid, which also incorporates studio, venue and coworking spaces. “I work with the artists we represent, planning events with them and the owner and mind behind the entire establishment, Wayne Rainey,” she explains. Rainey is the owner of monOrchid and also a commercial photographer. When Holland isn’t working within the gallery, she assists Rainey with her additional creative skills as a stylist and photoshoot assistant. The selection of monOrchid’s gallery artists is a combined effort of Rainey, monOrchid’s Executive Director Cydney Guess and Holland. “We’ll see an artist’s portfolio, discuss how we feel about it and if it would be a good fit,” Holland says. Holland’s love of art melds with her prior work experience in the operations of a gallery, including inventory, shipping, framing and warehouse management. Her position is a perfect hybrid of her many acquired skills from jobs she had in the past. Holland sees Phoenix coming into its own sense of style. After returning to Phoenix last year she noticed a change. “There were a lot of new restaurants and more of a culture being established,” Holland explains. “People are letting loose. They’re going back to their Southwest foundation, but there’s so much influence from developers and people moving here from other cities. Phoenix is a cool city, we just need to give it a little bit of love.” For more information about Holland, visit www.thegoldenwarrior.com. Uptown September '18

Pulse HIS STYLE

THE NAME’S BELLER. MIKE BELLER

Staying true to his style icon, this dapper gentleman thinks of every little detail to complete his ensembles BY MANDY HOLMES / PHOTO BY MARK MORGAN

He may be the director of the office of continuous improvement in the Department of Administration for the state of Arizona but when Mike Beller’s not enhancing the lives of state employees, he’s perfecting the art of intentional dressing. With a collection of slim-fit suits and freshly shined shoes inspired by James Bond, Beller is drawn to professional and polished pieces from men’s brands David Donahue and Suitsupply. “Bond is my style icon because he loves great brands and is equally as likely to destroy them in the processes of completing his civic duties,” Beller says. Like Bond, Beller is a man of many surprises and tastes. He can be known to color coordinate his lens cloth with his outfit, oftentimes shocking people with his attention to detail. Another finishing touch that he favors is the highly underrated solid dress sock. One thing is certain: Beller’s life is not always tailored suits and tuxedos. His favorite store is REI for their functional outdoor gear. “It's good to have a healthy work-life balance and when it’s cool outside I prefer to be on the trails. All men should own the appropriate outdoor attire,” he says.

Do you favor any colors or patterns? With a tendency toward lavender and lilac, I am currently working on reducing my dependency on checks in favor of solids. How do you switch up your outfit if heading from the office to an evening out? Ditch the tie. I am normally formally dressed for work so I lose the tie when we are headed out. I’ll also reach for the Cole Haans because they are comfortable. What would someone say if they looked at your closet? Man, you need a bigger closet.

HER STYLE

CHIEF DOUGH GETTER

McKenzie June’s style is as trendy and fresh as the cookie dough she serves at Unbaked

BY MANDY HOLMES / PHOTO BY CLAUDIA JOHNSTONE

The safe-to-eat cookie dough craze has hit the Valley and McKenzie June, the fashionable face and personality behind the tasty treat, has a fun fashion sense in and out of the Unbaked cookie dough kitchen. The Phoenix native knows the importance of dressing for the Arizona climate and mixes bohemian pieces with casual basics to create everyday feminine looks. When it comes to shopping, June favors stores like Free People and Planet Blue thanks to their mix of dresses, fun swimsuit styles and accessories. “Sundresses are a must living in Arizona. They’re comfortable and can be dressed up with a great pair of block-heeled sandals and gold jewelry,” the University of Arizona alum shares. Inspired by her tightknit group of friends and some popular Instagram accounts, June keeps up with trends despite her demanding schedule. During the week, you can find her running around town sporting fun apparel that promotes her new business and weekends call for jeans, T-shirts and rompers. Clothes aren’t the only thing that June attributes to her girly style. The self-proclaimed “skin care and make up junkie” frequents Sephora and loves collecting bags of all kinds. “When I was working abroad, I bought a purse in Belgium. It’s navy and white checks with red lining and reminds me of my time roaming Europe,” she reminisces.

What are your favorite patterns and current trends? I like solid colors and smaller prints, since I am petite – nothing too bold or big. My favorite trend right now is accessorizing with scarves to tie your hair up. I also like two-piece sets, such as a crop top and matching skirt. What is your No. 1 style tip? Dressing for your body type and avoiding trends that won’t flatter you. Also, always have your nails manicured and polished. How do you transition from work to nighttime? A glass of wine and a complete outfit change.

After meeting on The Bachelor, Arie Luyendyk Jr. and Lauren Burnham embark on their life together in Phoenix

It may not be the conventional love story, but it’s a beautiful story, regardless. Real estate agent and part-time race car driver, Arie Luyendyk Jr. and his fiancée, Lauren Burnham met and fell in love when they appeared on ABC’s hit television show, The Bachelor earlier this year. Now, after traveling to some exotic locales, the loved-up couple is setting down roots in Phoenix and gearing up for their wedding. Just days off an unforgettable series of trips that took the couple to places like Iceland, Panama, Barcelona, Peru, Australia, China and Bora Bora, they are back in the Valley and celebrating their new life together as a couple. This time, a little further away from the glare of the reality show spotlight. Although being on a high-profile television show may present entertainment-related opportunities for some, it’s not going to be a career for the couple. “We do a little bit here and there, but not too much,” Luyendyk says of opportunities and interviews connected with the couple’s reality show appearance earlier this year. “It’s not something we’re going to pursue, but sometimes things come up and we’ll do them. They’re fun.” Luyendyk says he is happy to be back at his job in real estate and will continue to juggle in his part-time career in race car driving. “A lot of people leave Arizona for the summer and get out of the heat, so racing is the perfect job,” explains Luyendyk, whose father is two-time Indianapolis 500 winner, Arie Luyendyk. “It’s really busy in May, June and July and then it tails off. My main focus is racing in the summer months.” Once August rolls around, he shifts his focus to real estate where he works out of the RE/Max Excalibur office in Scottsdale.

Putting Down Roots Recently, Luyendyk and Burnham purchased a new home in the Arcadia area. After an extensive search, looking at around 70 houses, the couple fell in love with a farmhouse-style dwelling. “We actually put in an offer on another house before this one. It was accepted, we were all excited and we were going to do a full remodel because it was an older house,” Burnham says. “We wanted to raise

the ceilings but found out we couldn’t do that, so we thought maybe it wasn’t a project we wanted to take on. We backed out. But the next house was this one and we said, ‘This is it. We’re at home.’ We love it!” Luyendyk explains, “I think we have lofty goals for making the house our own, but with the wedding coming up and Lauren just moving here, it’s almost like we just wanted to enjoy something that was already done.” They ultimately decided on the newly built house in an older neighborhood. The couple are now in full design mode with decorating their new home. “After being in the Valley for so many years, you get used to the desert landscape. But when you drive around in Arcadia you feel like it’s an area of town that is so different because there is so much grass and big trees,” Luyendyk says. Burnham, who was looking forward to a change of scenery in Arizona chimes in, “I’m coming here from the East Coast asking, ‘Where are all the cacti?’” The couple says they compromised to come up with a landscape at their home that they both like. The Arcadia area has much more to offer than just landscape for the couple. Luyendyk has always loved the neighborhood, and the couple is enjoying watching all the new restaurants popping up and the renovation that is shaping the future of the area. Some of the couple’s favorite restaurants include Chelsea’s Kitchen, The Henry, Doughbird and La Grande Orange, and they frequent Provision and Essence for morning coffee. “We try to go to a new restaurant almost every day or night, just so that Lauren can see and experience different parts of the Valley and that’s fun,” Luyendyk says. They also enjoy frequenting local resorts such as The Scott Resort & Spa and Omni Montelucia Resort & Spa. “As far as nightlife, we haven’t really gone out much, but we’ve enjoyed meeting friends at Second Story Restaurant & Liquor Bar and Kazimierz World Wine Bar.” The couple keeps in shape by doing early morning runs through local neighborhoods together, rock climbing, hiking Camelback Mountain and taking their pups with them up to Sunrise Peak.

Uptown September '18

Wedding Bells The next big adventure for the couple is their upcoming wedding in Maui in January 2019. Luyendyk and Burnham decided to keep the guest list to 120 people and they will exchange vows at the Haiku Mill adjacent to the famed Road to Hana. The vine-draped venue boasts courtyards, water features and old-world European charm with tropical elegance, and the couple chose a unique, collaborative approach for wedding planning. Along with the couple’s input on the wedding, Luyendyk’s manager, Klint Briney has been a monumental help in planning the event with the expertise of Haiku Mill’s wedding planner. “We haven’t been to Maui either, and we’re going to leave it as a surprise, so we won’t actually see the venue until the week of the wedding,” Luyendyk adds. Hawaii will also be the couple’s

honeymoon locale. “I think we’re a little traveled out and we’re ready to settle down,” Luyendyk says. “Hawaii is so beautiful and there is so much to see. I know it may sound a little cliche, but since we’ve been to amazing remote destinations like Bora Bora, it’s great that Hawaii is close, and our families can go there, so it’s the best of both worlds.” After the wedding, Luyendyk plans to continue with his real estate career and Burnham has a business venture that she is looking to launch in early 2019. “I hope to have my business and I want some babies,” Burnham says with a huge smile of the future. The couple indicates that four children would probably be the ideal number of kids for them. For Burnham, being on a reality show was a challenging, but ultimately rewarding experience.

“I think, for me, this pushed me outside of my comfort zone when it came to dating because I always dated the same type and it never worked out for me,” she says. “It let me date someone that I normally wouldn’t have, and it really worked out for us. We’re super happy and he’s my best friend. It’s really cool that we can have so much fun and have our life together.” Now that the production craziness that often surrounds the lives of those on reality TV is calming down, the couple has gained perspective on their experience. For Luyendyk, it was the ideal outcome. “Ultimately, it did work for me,” he finishes. “Going on The Bachelor the biggest fear was ‘Will I find someone? Will I go through this whole experience and still be single?’ For me, the best part of the whole scenario of being on The Bachelor was that I found Lauren and now we’re happy.”

Get to know the people who cook up everything but the food at local venues

Why do you love your favorite restaurant or bar? Is it the food? The drinks? The ambiance? Sure, while each of those elements certainly play a part, more often than not, you love a venue because of the way it makes you feel. And that’s why you go back and where general managers come into play. From the front of the house to the back of the house and everything in between, general managers are tasked with the day-to-day operations of every aspect of their team, venue decor, menus, and the overall guest experience. Truly, they are the behind-the-scenes talent that makes a place the place to be. Meet seven of them here.

Andrew McLaughlin GENERAL MANAGER, BOURBON STEAK AT FAIRMONT SCOTTSDALE PRINCESS

Andrew McLaughlin was born into a family business, but it was a far cry from the hospitality industry. As Arabian horse trainers, McLaughlin’s family moved to Arizona in the mid-1980s from Iowa given the Valley’s booming equine industry. For many of his early years, McLaughlin thought his future was with the animals. But at age 16, McLaughlin took a job at the Hyatt Regency Scottsdale’s former Golden Swan restaurant. Entranced by the intricacies of the job, McLaughlin jumped at every chance he had to take on more responsibility despite his young age. By 20, though he could not yet enjoy wine, McLaughlin became focused on earning his sommelier certification. Working under mentor and then-executive chef William Bradley, McLaughlin earned his level 1 certification as well as a dual role as general manager and sommelier when the Hyatt reimagined Golden Swan into VU. In 2008, McLaughlin joined the Michael Mina Group to open Bourbon Steak at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess, first as a server. Before taking on the general manager role, McLaughlin worked at Mina’s various concepts, notably RN74 in Seattle and Pabu at Four Seasons Hotel in Baltimore. By 2013, armed with a level 2 sommelier certification and the experience of someone twice his age, McLaughlin made his way back to Arizona as the general manager of Bourbon Steak. Over the past five years, McLaughlin has worked to evolve the concept of Scottsdale dining, becoming the first restaurant in the country with a single-barrel Bulleit bourbon program while adding tableside Japanese whiskey and absinthe ceremonies, respectively, and interactive tasting menus. Today, McLaughlin is working on his advanced sommelier certification while mentoring the next generation of talent on the team and supporting local causes like MASK and Arizona Liver Alliance. “I want to reinvest in my people and my community the way so many invested in me,” McLaughlin says.

Jason Goetz

GENERAL MANAGER, SOL MEXICAN COCINA Jason Goetz grew up in Iowa with aspirations of being a pilot, athlete, comedian and even a chef. But, given his family business was in construction supply, he assumed his life would follow a “bluer collar” trajectory. Once he graduated from The University of Iowa, however, he had a long conversation with his grandfather, who encouraged him to chase his dreams. Inspired, Goetz set out for the Arizona Golf Academy in 2007 at age 26. He worked part time for P.F. Chang’s before the move, so it was an easy transition to the Valley, where he took on serving, bartending and eventual managerial duties at the Scottsdale-based chain. Before he knew it, 10 years had passed since he started with the brand, and while professional golf wasn’t in the cards, restaurant management was. In 2012, Goetz was offered an opportunity to serve as the general manager for another up-and-coming restaurant concept, Sol Mexican Cocina. Since taking the reins, he has not only led the team in Scottsdale, but at Sol locations in both California and Colorado. Because of this, Goetz also operates in a regional role, serving all locations in Arizona, California and Colorado. He has assisted in hiring the entire culinary teams as well as helped develop Sol’s signature muddled cocktails, each focused on giving guests a full sensory experience. In recent years, Goetz even traveled to Mexico to aid in curating tequilas and mezcals for Sol’s four locations, and recently spent several months helping re-energize the Colorado restaurant, going so far as to move there temporarily to ensure success. “Life has been good to me. I do not credit my success to luck, as success is really preparation meeting opportunity,” Goetz says. “I’m a firm believer in setting goals for yourself and working hard toward them while helping others along the way.” In his spare time, Goetz raises funds for and volunteers at Phoenix Children’s Hospital and Blank Check Children’s Hospital in Iowa. He also oversees Sol’s charitable giving arm, which has benefited the Boys & Girls Clubs and The Challenge Foundation.

Mary Anna Ford

GENERAL MANAGER, SAPPORO

On first blush, MaryAnna Ford looks the epitome of femininity. But that’s quite contrary. In fact, Ford – who was raised in Texas with three older brothers – wanted to be a stunt woman and race cars when she grew up. Known for jumping off roofs and never without her skateboard, she spent her early life breaking more bones than all her older brothers combined. But after one too many concussions, she turned her attention to another passion: music. Ford’s voice earned her a scholarship to study music at a small college in Texas, where she married her high school sweetheart. But, in the early 1990s when her marriage fell apart and Ford was left with one young daughter and another on the way, the now-single mother moved to Arizona to be close to family. Initially, she managed apartment communities, but given that she had worked off and on in restaurants during high school and college, by the early 2000s, she started working at then-hot spot Jilly’s as well as in real estate. In 2004, she was working as a realtor, but was also recruited by Sapporo for what she assumed would be a side gig. Then the real estate market crashed. Ford persevered, pouring herself into Sapporo and joining its management team by 2007. In 2009, when Sapporo was purchased by worldwide restaurant juggernaut Tavistock, they not only kept Ford on but also invested in her culinary education, inviting her to dozens of their concepts nationwide, where she learned the art of the hospitality sector. “Pablo Picasso said ‘learn the rules like a pro so you can break them like an artist,’” Ford says. “I voraciously observed, listened and learned so that I could master my craft and then paint my own picture, forge my own way in the industry.” Overseeing all business and culinary operations at Sapporo, Ford still visits sister concepts but, now, she helps others through her experience and knowledge. She also oversees local charitable giving, including a partnership with the Arizona Cardinals to host events for women touched by abuse and cancer.

Patrick Norton

GENERAL MANAGER, J&G STEAKHOUSE AT THE PHOENICIAN When John Lennon was in school, a teacher asked him what he wanted to be when he grew up. When he wrote “happy” as his answer, the teacher told him he didn’t understand the assignment to which Lennon famously responded that she didn’t understand life. Much like Lennon, Patrick Norton simply seeks happiness out of life. A New England native, Norton guided his every decision by what would make him happy. This ideal led him to study French and history in college, where he bussed tables on the side. Eventually, Norton’s foray into the culinary world took him to France, where he gained experience in global cuisine. During a chance meeting on a subway while there, Norton met his nowwife, a Frenchwoman who he brought back to America in the 1990s. Back in the states, his global hospitality experience brought him extraordinary opportunities over the next 15-plus years, including working with famed chef David Burke, a teaching position at the French Culinary Institute in New York City, and general manager positions with The Palm Restaurant and world-renowned Smith & Wollensky steakhouses nationwide. But the desert is what made him happy. So much so, in 2011 the Nortons relocated to Scottsdale, where Norton joined the then-new J&G Steakhouse at The Phoenician as part of Michelin-starred chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s leadership team. Norton and J&G quickly earned acclaim from Wine Spectator and USA Today. In 2015, when The Phoenician purchased J&G from Jean-Georges Restaurants, Norton stayed on, leading the restaurant while the resort underwent a multi-million-dollar, multi-year renovation. Today, Norton is still at the helm while J&G undergoes some minor upgrades into the fall. “I live for five o’clock, when the metaphoric curtain goes up and our team is live, performing nightly to guests’ cheers and applause,” Norton says. “In fact, nothing makes me happier.”

Nick Accardo

GENERAL MANAGER OF BAR AND NIGHTLIFE OPERATIONS, TRIYAR ENTERTAINMENT GROUP Nick Accardo grew up in Ahwatukee, quickly earning his EMT certification once he graduated high school with eyes on becoming a firefighter or getting into strength and conditioning training for elite athletes. Eager to earn income while in school for both, Accardo accepted a fine dining server position at the now-closed restaurant, Barcelona, in the early 2000s. A natural talent, Accardo was eventually scooped up by Myst Nightclub, where he could work at night, while studying and interning at a local mixed martial arts gym by day. At one point, his popularity even led to a guest bartending gig at Myst’s popular neighbor, Martini Ranch, on Sundays. In 2006, Accardo was recruited to Jackrabbit Lounge, known for its celebrity clientele, where he became a VIP bottle runner, all while still in school. By 2008, Accardo was asked to join Triyar Entertainment Group to open W Scottsdale and its three in-house bars/lounges. The W quickly felt like home, especially when he met a fellow bartender-turned-girlfriend, Dawn. Eventually, Accardo put school on hold to focus on hospitality full time. In 2015, Dawn and Accardo – both in management positions at the hotel by then – received exciting news that they were pregnant. They married in 2016, and Dawn, who had taken over the role of general manager, decided to take some time off to be with the baby, so, in a twist of fate, Accardo stepped into her role. “Be it science, mixology, parenting or management, the more you know, the more there is to know each day,” says Accardo, who, today, heads all of the resort’s major events including their famous Halloween and New Year’s Eve extravaganzas as well as day-to-day operations of W Scottsdale’s Shade Lounge, WET Dayclub and Living Room Lounge as well as bar operations at Aloft Scottsdale nearby. Accardo also helps spearhead the nonprofit efforts at the hotel, which, along with Triyar overall, supports dozens of charities.

Nick Campisano

GENERAL MANAGER, BORN & RAISED HOSPITALITY Tucson native Nick Campisano’s father raised him to believe in sweat equity. Though the elder Campisano is credited with helping co-found and design Canyon Ranch resort and spa, for example, it didn’t mean the younger Campisano got special treatment when he applied to work there in high school, starting as a busboy and dish washer. The hard work he put in at his “dad’s office” inspired Campisano to venture to Southern California in his early 20s to seek out more work and new industry experiences. At the time, traditional dive bars along the Pacific coast were ripe for an upgrade so Campisano started (and eventually became a partner in) a business that restored and refreshed them along the coast from Los Angeles to San Jose. Campisano would work as manager of each one as needed, but eventually took a break to study business and law. While there in 2006, Morgan Hotel Group scooped him up to help breathe new life into the Mondrian Scottsdale, which brought Campisano back to Arizona. From there, he would join Fox Restaurant Concepts (FRC), helping open Modern Steak and the first Culinary Dropout. In 2012, when his niece was born with special needs, Campisano stepped back from management to focus on family, leaving FRC and taking a job at The Parlor. There, he met then-beverage director Joshua James. By 2014, the two, who shared a passion for Asian cuisine and culture, dreamt up Clever Koi in Central Phoenix. Its success led to a second location in Gilbert in 2016 and the beginning of Born & Raised Hospitality, the group that manages these restaurants. “Food, beverage and hospitality is a vessel to create a memorable experience for the guest, but, more importantly, it serves to inspire the team at the restaurant,” says Campisano, who still serves as general manager of Clever Koi. Today, Campisano and James have two more venues in the works: Fellow Osteria at ASU SkySong and Across the Pond, literally across from Clever Koi Phoenix.

Matthew Wohleb

GENERAL MANAGER, NOOK KITCHEN ARCADIA AND DILLY DALLY LOUNGE A Scottsdale native, Matthew Wohleb was fascinated with drawing and – by middle school – graphic design. After high school, Wohleb studied marketing, intent on working in advertising, where he could dabble in graphics and help tell visual stories for brands “just like Matthew McConaughey in How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.” Though he would graduate in his early 20s with that marketing degree, by the time graduation rolled around, Wohleb had found a new vocational passion: wine. During college and immediately after in the mid-2000s, Wohleb worked for the company that formerly owned Cowboy Ciao, Kazimierz World Wine Bar, See Saw and Digestif. There, he became entranced by wine. Ironically, Wohleb’s mother lived in Sonoma, and though he visited her every summer while growing up, the wine bug didn’t bite until all those years later. A level 1 sommelier by age 21 and advanced sommelier soon after, Wohleb stayed with the restaurant group and became the “the wine guy,” known for carrying a walkie-talkie so any of the four venues could radio in for wine suggestions and for his nightly jogs on Stetson Drive between venues to offer personalized guest guidance. In 2010, former colleague Frank Vairo recruited Wohleb as beverage manager of his new Cave Creek restaurant, Amaro, where he worked for three years before partnering with Vairo to open Nook Kitchen Arcadia in 2013. Nine months later, they would buy Dilly Dally Lounge. “There is a voice in my head always whispering, ‘Do better. Strive,’ Wohleb says. “Launching my own concepts, and then caring for their operations, makes me push harder every day.” In addition to serving as a partner and general manager of Nook Kitchen Arcadia and Dilly Dally Lounge, Wohleb is also a partner at Nook Kitchen’s Downtown Phoenix location and The Bar in Arcadia. Additionally, he is an avid supporter of Southwest Autism Research & Resource Center as well as the Epilepsy Foundation.

The Beauty Within

Dr. Sumer Daiza, MD FADS, of Plastic Surgery of Scottsdale

PLASTIC SURGERY IS a highly personal decision for every individual and Dr. Sumer Daiza makes that medical journey right along with her patients. By offering the safest and highest level of focused care, she welcomes each patient into a warm and compassionate environment where they are treated like family. Dr. Daiza has lived in Scottsdale since she was a baby. From the age of three, she knew she wanted to be a physician because of the respect she had for her own childhood doctor. She attended Xavier College Preparatory and Arizona State University before earning her medical degree from the University of Arizona College of Medicine. She was also elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society, a distinction awarded to only the top 10 percent of the medical school graduating class. She completed a 5-year general surgery residency program at the Phoenix Integrated Surgical Residency and her plastic surgery training at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. “It wasn’t until my general surgery training that I was exposed to the plastic surgery specialty and I knew immediately that this was what I wanted to do,” Dr. Daiza says. After her plastic surgery training, Dr. Daiza went on to complete a one-year cosmetic surgery fellowship with Charlotte Plastic Surgery where she trained alongside some of the leading plastic surgeons in the country. Her training focused on cosmetic surgery of the breast, body and face, which are now her specialty. Now in her own practice, Dr. Daiza offers highly personalized cosmetic procedures including facelifts, breast augmentations, lifts and reductions, liposuction, tummy tucks, body contouring, mommy makeovers, Botox and fillers. “I do all the injectables myself and I do not use ancillary staff to do them,” she says. Mommy makeovers are a very popular procedure, including the Genevieve by Viveve vaginal rejuvenation. “It fits in well with my patient population and benefits moms who have had babies and those that have urinary incontinence,” Dr. Daiza says. She adds, “My office is like a concierge practice. I see every

patient from the very beginning until the very end.” An initial consultation takes about an hour where she will discuss a patient’s desired outcome, helps them select the procedure that is right for them, an exam is completed, and patients look at before and after photos of what they can expect. “We are very much a no-pressure office,” she explains. Dr. Daiza personally sees each patient for every appointment, including all pre-op and post-up visits. Even beyond the surgical procedure, she stays in contact with her patients. “What I do is very personal as it is, and patients are coming in to feel better about themselves, so it becomes a personal relationship.” Her patients stay with her throughout the years and often refer family members and friends. Remarkably, every patient gets Dr. Daiza’s personal cell number so that they have the peace of mind knowing their doctor is only a phone call away. The Skin You’re In

Anne Walter, MD of Dermatology & Skin Surgery Specialists

THE SKIN IS the largest and most visible organ of the human body. It needs attention and expert care throughout a lifetime. Whether getting medical, surgical or cosmetic dermatological care, Dr. Anne Walter utilizes state-of-the-art techniques to develop customized treatments plan for each patient. Hailing from California, Dr. Walter attended Harvard, completing her bachelor’s degree and graduating cum laude before earning her Doctor of Medicine at University of Southern California. “I had originally thought I wanted to be a plastic surgeon until I entered medical school. However, most procedures in plastic surgery require patients to be placed under general anesthesia, which limits physician-patient interaction,” Dr. Walter explains. “In medical school, I gained more exposure to dermatology and fell in love with it. I really enjoy interacting and developing relationships with my patients. Furthermore, I liked that there was a medical component, working with both cancer and chronic medical conditions, as well as a cosmetic side. It was the perfect combination.” She completed an internal medicine internship at UCLA’s Cedars-Sinai Medical Center before completing her dermatology residency at Chicago’s Northwestern University, serving as chief resident during her final year. She then completed a yearlong Mohs Surgery and Cutaneous Oncology fellowship. “My training brought me to the East Coast, West Coast and Midwest! It’s nice because I feel like I have something in common with almost every patient,” Dr. Walter explains. Dr. Walter and her husband opened Dermatology & Skin Surgery Specialists in Scottsdale in 2015. In contrast to the corporatization of dermatology, Dr. Walter prides herself on providing patient centered care in an intimate practice environment. Dr. Walter’s expertise in the field is exceptional. She is a fellow of the American College of Mohs Surgery and American Academy of Dermatology. Dr. Walter recognizes that practicing dermatology in Arizona comes with unique challenges. “We have intense sun exposure which can lead to skin cancer and premature aging. We can’t assume that sunscreen alone is enough. When possible, I recommend physically protecting the skin with hats, swim shirts and sun protective clothing, in addition to sunscreen. People should also be proactive and optimize their skin care regimens. The skin benefits from hydration, antioxidants, retinoids, and growth factors.”

The doctor suggests that people in their early 20s have their skin checked to get a baseline evaluation of moles and overall skin health to determine skin cancer risk. Those in their 30s and 40s and beyond should be evaluated more frequently. Obviously, any concerning lesions should be brought to the attention of a dermatologist no matter the patient’s age. Dr. Walter also recommends being proactive about antiaging. Small treatments in your early years can help maintain a natural youthful look during your golden years. “Scottsdale’s cosmetic market is booming,” Dr. Walter explains. “Unfortunately, amid the many qualified providers, there are many unsupervised injectors that do not understand the risks of the procedures. I prefer restricting these services to physicians.” Dermatology & Skin Surgery Specialists excels at providing exceptional dermatology expertise in a properly supervised practice. Stem Cell Treatment for Diabetic Neuropathy Dr. Richard Jacoby, DPM of Extremity Health Center

THE DOCTORS AND staff at Extremity Health Centers offer a combined 40+ years of experience in podiatric medicine to residents who live in and around the Phoenix and Scottsdale area. Under the medical direction of podiatrist Richard P. Jacoby, DPM, the practice provides diagnosis and treatment for stubborn, chronic foot and ankle pain and comprehensive and successful treatment of diabetic neuropathy. After graduating from college, Dr. Jacoby attended Villanova University before receiving his doctorate of podiatric medicine at the Pennsylvania College of Podiatric Medicine. He has participated in and taught thousands of hours of Continuing Medical Education over the past few decades. Additionally, he is a past president of the Arizona Podiatry Association and the Association of Extremity Nerve Surgeons and co-authored the book “Sugar Crush: How to Reduce Inflammation, Reverse Nerve Damage, and Reclaim Good Health,” correlating a relationship between sugar and inflammation. Extremity Health Center offers a variety of on-site extremity diagnosis and medical services, including surgery that are available for a wide range of issues, including foot and heel pain, bunions, ankle fractures and sprains, varicose veins, foot and ankle arthritis, diabetic foot, plantar fasciitis, toenail fungus and peripheral neuropathy and neuroma. Dr. Jacoby’s specialty is working with diabetic patients and he has a proven formula to resolve diabetic neuropathy. “What I’ve found is that the progression of most neuropathies is aggressive, insidious and invasive throughout the body.” “Stem cells from umbilical cord blood are the best product out there today, especially for neuropathy,” says Dr. Jacoby of the most effect treatment he uses. “ Stem cells are miraculous in that they actively seek out inflammatory tissues and repair and restore tissue, tendon, tissue, bone, nerve or muscle. Stem cells also work in the repair of foot and ankle fractures and Achilles tendonitis. “Stem cells are the biggest paradigm shift in medicine since the germ theory and it’s absolutely true,” Dr. Jacoby explains of stem cell use in diabetic neuropathy. “Patients will get off their medicine, and in most cases will avoid surgery.” Dr. Jacoby uses the Dellon procedure for decompressing

peripheral neuropathy. He has utilized the surgical procedure successfully on thousands of patients and none of them have needed a subsequent amputation. He says, “Dr. Dellon perfected the Dellon technique and did the research back in the 80s. I adopted his technique and trained with him 20 years ago.” There have been 100,000 amputations annually due to diabetic neuropathy since the implementation of the Dellon procedure and Dr. Jacoby says that adds up to two million avoidable amputations. “It’s a national disgrace,” he says. It is his belief that the FDA pushes medications that don’t work, which in turn, create situations where amputations are done. The Dellon procedure utilizing stem cells could save thousands of people from avoidable amputations. “Stem cells are the fountain of youth and I’ve used them myself for a severe herniated disc,” finishes Dr. Jacoby. “I was back playing tennis in three days and haven’t needed another injection since.” TO LEARN MORE ABOUT EXTREMITY HEALTH CENTER, CALL 480.994.5977 IN SCOTTSDALE OR PEORIA, OR VISIT WWW.EXTREMITYHEALTHCENTERS.COM.

Feel Better. Function Better. Look Better. Dr. Russell Bartels, Women’s Health & Vitality Hormones for Men Expert

DR. RUSSELL BARTELS is a board-certified gynecologist, but that does not define him. Over 16 years in practice he has responded to his patients needs and requests. For example, his revitalized female hormone patients asked him to treat the men in their lives, so he started a men’s health clinic to get men optimized too. Ten years ago, women began inquiring about vaginal rejuvenation, so Dr. Bartels went to Beverly Hills, received additional expertise on performing labiaplasty and vaginal tightening becoming the first to offer these services in Scottsdale. Subsequently, he added a wellness and weight loss program. He recognizes that no two patients are alike and the most effective solution is achieved through a personalized expert approach utilizing multiple modalities. After phasing out of delivering babies a few years ago, he still offers routine office gynecological services with a focus on non-surgical treatments for bladder leaking and vaginal looseness, health and wellness through hormone/thyroid optimization, sexual health and weight loss. Dr. Bartels offers many options for bioidentical hormones including creams, pills, injections, patches, and the sought-after pellets. He has been providing pellet therapy for over 10 years and suggests patients interested in this form of hormone optimization see an experienced provider as there are many pellet clinics popping up with little experience. For the men, he offers similar hormone/thyroid optimization and weight loss options, but also has several treatments for erectile dysfunction including the P Shot (PRP), Tri Mix injections, and the newest regenerative treatment called Gainswave. As the foremost authority on vaginal and bladder rejuvenation in Scottsdale, Dr. Bartels prides himself on the fact that his office is the only one in Arizona that has all the technological options for women seeking non-surgical vaginal and bladder rejuvenation- Viveve (Radiofrequency), Femilift (CO2 laser), and the O Shot (PRP). He points out that many other offices and Medspas only have one of these treatment options, and therefore that’s the treatment the patient will receive even if it’s not the best option, as each device targets slightly different issues. “If all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail. We have the full tool box to address our patients’ problems.” “It’s great that I can see couples and get them on the same page hormonally and functionally,” Dr. Bartels says. “We do weight

loss programs, too. It’s really about health optimization.” He is a leading expert in bioidentical hormone replacement therapy and has provided countless patients a renewed sense of self and better quality of life through his individualized approach. He is also a much sought-after speaker on the subject of bioidentical hormones and non-surgical vaginal/bladder rejuvenation. Additionally, the practice offers routine gynecological services, making it a comprehensive one-stop practice for all gynecological needs. On the aesthetics side, the practice offers Cool Sculpting, laser treatments, Botox, dermal fillers, PRP hair restoration and non-surgical facial rejuvenation. “I’m passionate about listening to a patient’s concerns and evaluating what they’ve been suffering with that no one else seems to be able to fix,” says Dr. Bartels. “Diagnosing problems when others can’t and offering solutions where others haven’t in order to help patients live better lives is why I became a doctor in the first place.” TO LEARN MORE ABOUT DR. Comprehensive Addiction Recovery Options Dr. Sarah Wicklund, MD FAPA of Fountain Hills Recovery BOARD-CERTIFIED PSYCHIATRIST and medical director of Fountain Hills Recovery, Dr. Sarah Wicklund provides comprehensive inpatient treatment. She also has a specialty of treating PTSD in veterans and first responders, treatment-resistant depression and patients with a dual diagnosis. Fountain Hills Recovery specializes in providing caring service for niche patient populations including executives, veterans, first responders, LGBT, youth, celebrities, artists, musicians and those with high stress careers. Dr. Wicklund received her B.S. in microbiology and her M.S. in Food Chemistry from the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. She went on to the University of Illinois College of Medicine for medical school where she graduated in 2008. In 2012, she completed residency training in psychiatry at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, WI. During her time at MCW, she served as Chief Resident for the Milwaukee VA and gained an affinity for treating veterans. “I have several family members who are veterans and so is my husband,” Dr. Wicklund explains. “My rotation at the VA was not my only psychiatry rotation, but an elective rotation I chose to do during my fourth year that solidified my interest in psychiatry. I love to give back and it’s a way I felt I could give back to my country, too.” She relocated to Scottsdale after her residency in 2012 and joined the medical staff at St. Joseph’s Hospital in the inpatient setting at Valley Hospital. In 2013, she joined the Phoenix VA where she is still on staff, working with patients in inpatient and outpatient settings. Dr. Wicklund was excited to take on the position of medical director for Fountain Hills Recovery in June 2018 because of the focus on treating veterans and first responders. Because she is still working four days a week at the VA, her position at Fountain Hills Recovery allows for better continuity of care for patients suffering from substance abuse. There are two separate residential homes – one for men and one for women. She can follow her patients’ treatment from the

more intense residential substance abuse setting to the outpatient setting of her own private outpatient practice, Mindfully Integrated Health, and vice versa. She is proud to work with patients in a peaceful and respectful environment that offers a comprehensive approach to recovery. “I really like that Fountain Hills Recovery is doing recovery for the right reasons,” Dr. Wicklund says. “They are looking to help people. Substance abuse is so rampant in this country, particularly with opiate addiction. The owners, Natalie and John Salem really seem like they’re doing this to help others, especially first responders and veterans and that’s my soft spot.” There are a wide variety of patients at Fountain Hills recovery. “There are some veterans and first responders,” says Dr. Wicklund. “But, that’s not everyone, and it’s nice to see an array of people that come from across the country.” She is excited about the new component of working with patients from other areas of the country, as since her relocation to Arizona, she had exclusively been treating people from Arizona. Dr. Wicklund explains, “This is not the typical recovery program. There is staff here that are also in recovery. They understand from personal experience. They are very good at picking up when someone is leaving something out or just listening to get to the underlying issues of alcoholism or drug use.” “I’m really comfortable with dual diagnosis,” she says. “Having worked at the VA, there is a significant amount of dual diagnosis, whether that’s alcohol abuse, opiates or meth and mental illness. I’ve seen a lot of it and treated a lot of it.” Dr. Wicklund’s passion continues to be witnessing her patients’ success. “I love to see folks get better. I love to hear them say they’re feeling better and that they’re able to work with the program and be optimistic that it will work for them,” she finishes. Wellness DEFINED Arcadia Wellness Center provides a variety of comprehensive wellness services

Native Arizonan Sarah Quinn, nurse practitioner is the owner and medical director of Arcadia Wellness Center. Offering a comprehensive variety of wellness and aesthetic services in a warm and welcoming atmosphere allows Quinn and her staff to help their patients looking and feeling their best with a whole-person approach. Quinn grew up in Tucson and is a graduate of Grand Canyon University. After she graduated as a registered nurse she was initially working in high-risk ICUs and emergency rooms as well as faculty for a university.” I also worked at a plastic surgery center where I found a passion for wellness and aesthetics,” Quinn explains. While getting excellent clinical experience, Quinn went back to school to get her masters as a nurse practitioner in family practice, yet had her sights set firmly on working in wellness. She now has more than 13 years combined experience as a registered nurse and certified nurse practitioner. She opened Arcadia Wellness Center in 2014. In addition to Quinn, there are others

on staff that provide services including hormone therapy, cosmetic injections, aesthetics and laser, weight loss, food allergies and pain management. Quinn’s area of focus is in bioidentical hormones, weight loss, allergies and interventional pain management. “We keep a very busy schedule seeing patients, and all have our specialty area of focus.” There are both men and women patients as young as 30-years-old that come in for expert bioidentical hormone and weight loss treatments. “Someone with an imbalance could really be any age,” Quinn explains. Lasers have far-reaching applications in both wellness and aesthetics. “We have a wonderful machine that has a lot of different platforms,” Quinn explains. “We can work on pigmentation, resurfacing, anti-aging, tightening and rejuvenation for the body and face.” What sets Arcadia Wellness Center apart is the extensive assessment process for either wellness, aesthetic or anti-aging medicine services. “It involves sitting down one-on-one and finding out a health history, doing a physical and finding out what their goals are,” Quinn says. She continues, “Someone may come in for one treatment, but with an assessment we look at the whole person, inside and out.” They take their time to discuss the best treatment options and data and lab findings are important in completing an in-depth assessment. Patients are treated in concierge practice style. “Patients appreciate it and they enjoy being able to email me and call me on my cell phone,” Quinn states. “I make myself available to my patients, so we are working on goals together.” Arcadia Wellness Center is considered a boutique practice because many services are offered under one roof. Another way Arcadia Wellness Center sets itself apart from other practices is through cutting edge technology and use of biologics and stem cells. “We incorporate stems cells into a lot of our injections, including hair restoration,” Quinn finishes. “There are normal fillers which we’re experts in, but we incorporate stem cells with dermal fillers. We go above and beyond in what we offer and in our training.” Arcadia Wellness Center is located at 2701 E. Camelback Rd., Suite 163, Phoenix. Expert Tax Evaluation for Today’s Complex Economy Joseph Rose, CPA

T

oday’s tax code is a mine field of information and rules. If you are a business owner, the tax code can be even that much trickier to navigate. With the help of a proactive CPA like the president of Rose Tax Consulting, Joseph Rose, affluent individuals and business owners can make highlyinformed important decisions that will place them in the best possible tax position. Rose received a BSBA in accounting from the University of Arizona and serves both the Valley and Tucson. Rose is also a certified tax strategist. Fewer than 300 specialists in 52 states have been awarded this specialized designation from the American Institute of Certified Tax Planners.

Rose has been working in the world of taxes for 25 years and had his CPA designation for most of this time. He has encountered just about every type of tax situation imaginable and relishes the chance to work with his clients in developing a proactive and informed approach with strategies for challenging tax situations. “I just love puzzles and tax code is a big puzzle,” Rose says. Rose offers advanced strategic tax planning to select clientele that are forwardthinking in their business formation and tax approach. “We only work with high-income affluent tax payers, usually business owners, to mitigate their taxes by substantial amounts depending upon their unique situation,” Rose

explains. “The more complex their tax situation is, the more goodies the tax code might have for them!” Conducting a thorough discovery is key as the law restricts Rose from recommending certain tax strategies without first doing intensive due diligence with a potential client. A client intake process starts with a discovery session that will include getting copies of taxes and a preliminary Q&A session with Rose Tax Consulting to see where additional credits and other tax opportunities may exist. “I go through their tax situation and match it up with tax strategies that might be available to them then discuss things in their tax situation that might be of concern under the new tax laws,” Rose says referring to the substantial changes in the new tax laws as of January 2018. Rose shared a recent case where he was able to achieve a massive 80 percent reduction in taxes for the client. This was accomplished through a process of reorganization, income splitting, retirement solutions and proper structuring which allowed the client to maximize their profit. This “found” money allowed the client to meet the expansion needs of their business without the need for financing. Rose’s newest best-selling book “The Great Tax Escape Book: Strategies for Early Planning and a Lower Tax Bill” is available through Amazon.com. “I don’t believe anyone should pay a dime more in taxes than the law requires,” Rose finishes. Rose Tax Consulting is located at 6424 E. Greenway Pkwy., Suite 100, Scottsdale. Call 480.210.2623 or visit www.RoseVFO.com for additional information.

2018 MERCEDES-BENZ AMG GT R COUPE The beastly sports car takes performance driving to a new level BY JIM PRUETER

VITAL STATS: Base price: $157,000

AMG, Mercedes-Benz’s high-performance speed shop, has been hammering out a steady stream of unrestrained, tire-shredding, asphalt-ripping street machines for more than 30 years. The GT R is its latest. If you’re familiar with Germany’s famous motorsports complex, Nürburgring (nicknamed “Green Hell”), it’s worth knowing that the GT R got around the track in 7 minutes and 10 seconds, which Mercedes claims is a record for rear-wheel-drive cars. Low, wide and inspired by the 300 SL Gullwing racer, GT R sports a snarling, aggressive front end. Its wide, carbon fiber body panels, wheels and tires extend away from the height-adjustable, double wishbone aluminum suspension. Track-ready power comes in the form of a twin-turbocharged 577 horsepower, 4.0-liter, V-8 front engine with a massive 516 pound-feet of torque. It takes just 3.2 seconds to get from zero to 60 mph and has a top speed of 198 mph. All this power is quickly brought to a halt by

compound carbon-ceramic disc brakes. A dizzying amount of technology, engineering and design make the GT R a rewarding car to drive. Here are a few specs to impress: fourwheel steering and five selectable drive modes, damper-setting buttons, and a nine-position knob on the center of the dash to adjust the traction control system. Let’s not forget the rumbling of the deployable AMG performance exhaust system. But perhaps the best thing is that, thanks to smarter-than-you safety and technology, this twoseater is perfectly suitable for those who are not race car drivers. With exemplary performance, and though shockingly fast, it’s surprisingly easy to drive. At $157,000, GT R competes for the affections of the richly blessed, with the likes of the Acura NSX, Audi R8, Porsche 911 and Jaguar F-Type SVR. In a sea of those makes, you’ll definitely stand out at Saturday’s Scottsdale Cars and Coffee … provided you want the attention.

Price as tested: $187,345 Engine: 4.0-L bi-turbo Fuel economy: 15/20 mpg city/ highway Seating: 2 Fab features: The $10,000 Green Hell Mango paint Killer good looks Mellifluous exhaust notes

MEZCAL MOVEMENT Try the smoky liquor that’s taking over the beverage industry

Less than 10 years ago, only a million liters of mezcal, a spirit derived from agave much like tequila, were produced. By contrast, last year farmers and distillers were tasked with producing 6 million liters of the spirit, which is now sold in 27 countries on three continents. But how is it different than tequila? “Tequila and mezcal have three distinct differences,” says Supreet Singh of Breakthru Beverage Arizona. “First, tequila can only be made from blue agave, whereas mezcal comes from nearly any variety of agave. Second, tequila can only be produced, by law, in Jalisco, Mexico, whereas mezcal can be from a variety of Mexican states. And finally, the production process is different, hence the distinctly smoky flavor of mezcal.” Here are eight sippers that incorporate the smoky liquor.

The Drop Bear NOOK KITCHEN El Silencio Mezcal, Yellow Chartreuse, housemade eucalyptus cordial, juniper honey, lemon and aromatic bitters create a depth of flavor and make this cocktail equal parts smoky, herbaceous, botanical, sweet, and lightly acidic. $13. Two locations; www.nookkitchen.com.

Silent as a Church Mouse TACO GUILD This seductive cocktail blends El Silencio Mezcal with mole bitters to highlight the mezcal's smooth and elegant complex expressions, and then red wine and holiday spice to spark the senses. $9.95. 546 E. Osborn Road, Phoenix; 602.264.4143; www.tacoguild.com.

Piña Ahumada SIERRA BONITA GRILL A Tulum, Mexico specialty that translates to “smoky pineapple” in English, this balanced drink features Nuestra Soledad Mezcal, Stiggins’ Fancy Plantation Pineapple Rum, Ancho Reyes Chile Liqueur, lime and pineapple juices, and cinnamon syrup in a cayenne-salted rim glass. $9. 6933 N. 7th St., Phoenix; 602.264.0700; www.sierrabonitagrill.com.

Mezcalada LADERA TAVERNA Y COCINA A riff on the Puerto Rican classic, this cocktail swaps out the rum for Ilegal Mezcal Joven. The coconut cream and pineapple are there, as well as some lime for acidity and angostura bitters for spice. $8. 8729 N. Central Ave., Phoenix; 602.606.2258; www.laderaphx.com.

Crudarita CRUDO A refreshing play on a margarita, but with a tartness all its own, the Crudarita features Del Maguey Vida Mezcal, Arette Blanco Tequila, lime, and sugar. $11. 3603 E. Indian School Road, Phoenix; 602.358.8666; www.crudoaz.com. Miel de Verano PAZ CANTINA Y TAQUEIRA Pampelmousse, housemade orange blossom honey and peaches add another level of complexity to this mezcal and tequila-infused cocktail. But beware: it’s strong! $12. 330 E. Roosevelt St., Phoenix; 602.883.3651; www.pazcantina.com.

The Larry is the newest tenant in the Phoenix Warehouse District, offering up globally inspired daytime eats with an inventive cocktail program. “We’re cooking up familiar dishes and adding our own ‘street food’ touch, taking a cue from our sister restaurant, The Dressing Room on Roosevelt Row, while maintaining our own vibe and style,” explains chef Luis Arellano. One example of this is their “KFC” Korean Fried Chicken sandwich ($12). The fresh, flavorful dish features a piece of crispy chicken, spicy gochujang (red chili paste) mayo, crisp, cool cucumbers that offset some of the spice and fresh arugula, which adds bitterness and pepperiness. It’s all served up on a buttery brioche bun from Arizona-based MJ Bread. The Larry is open Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Located at 515 E. BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE SHANGHAI A kitschy homage to The Porch’s former tenant

Nearly a year ago now, The Porch opened in Arcadia. “Before we reimaged the space, the building was actually home to Little Shanghai, a Chinese restaurant that shuttered as a result of the recession,” says Ty Goossen, The Porch’s general manager. According to Goossen, as his team dreamed up the cocktail program, they wanted to do a little something to recognize the former neighborhood mainstay while staying true to their vision of developing tasty drinks with Instagram-worthy elements. Big Trouble in Little Shanghai ($12) fits the bill to a tee. The cocktail starts with Ty Ku Soju, a vodka-like spirit but with half the calories. “While Ty Ku Soju isn’t widely used here, it is currently the top distilled spirit in the world,” says Goossen, whose wife is a native of Hong Kong and attested to its popularity overseas during drink development stages. The smooth spirit is combined with Deep Eddy Lemon Vodka, which is distilled 10 times and then blended with actual lemons to produce a tart zip with slight sweetness, in a shaker with ice. “After a healthy shake, we strain the mixture into a plastic Chinese food takeout container we had specially produced for the bar,” Goossen explains. The cocktail is topped with a healthy float of Red Bull Yellow Edition to provide a pop of taste as well as bubbles on the nose. It’s is finished with chopsticks and – as an added treat – a real fortune cookie. “It tastes like an effervescent, zesty punch that – given the vodka and Ty Ku Sojo – packs an actual punch,” Goossen says. CHEF CONVERSATIONS In the kitchen with Mariel Ocegueda of Babbo Italian Eatery

Mariel Ocegueda started her culinary journey at age 18 at Babbo Italian Eatery, rising through the ranks as a self-trained chef. After leaving Babbo for a few years and working at several other Valley restaurants, she returned to Babbo last year as the head chef.

BY GABBY RICHMAN / PHOTO BY MARK MORGAN

When did you know you wanted to be a chef? I knew I wanted to be a chef when I was making salsas at the age of 10. If you weren’t a chef, you’d probably be… I would probably be on a farm, growing my own food. What is your favorite food memory? Making homemade corn tortillas growing up with my mom. We would boil the corn and drain the water and then use a “metate” to make the dough. Then make the dough into flat tortilla shapes and cook them on a stone oven. What’s the most adventurous dish you’ve made? One of my early mentors was an incredible Italian chef. We made a traditional dish from Sicily made with Sicilian beef marinated in Kalamata olives, red wine and herbs. The flavor profile was something I had never worked with. How do you think you differ in the kitchen as a self-trained chef? As a self-trained chef, I had to hard work really hard to get to where I am. I love what I do and I live for my job. I also have more patience than most chefs I think. I like to make others become their best selves in the kitchen. What was the hardest thing to learn when beginning your career? The hardest thing is when you don’t have faith or support from others. Having to fight through that is difficult. I am also a woman in a mostly male-dominated industry so making sure I was heard was important. What is your approach in the kitchen? To show others anything is possible and to always be kind and grateful. After getting your start at Babbo, you left for a few years to pursue other endeavors and came back last year. What made you return? I came back because the owner, Ken Pollack, is one of the kindest people I know with a good heart. He inspired me to make the impossible possible at Babbo Italian Eatery. Babbo Italian Eatery has eight locations Valleywide with plans for a ninth to open soon. Phoenix location, 6855 N. 16th St., Phoenix; 602.279.1500; www.babboitalian.com.

DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE Alice in Wonderland-inspired bar opens in Phoenix

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTOS BY ELIZABETH MARIE

“But I don’t want to go among mad people,” Alice remarked. “Oh, you can’t help that,” said the Cat, “we’re all mad here. I’m mad. You’re mad.” “How do you know I’m mad?” said Alice. “You must be,” said the Cat, “or you wouldn’t have come here.” These iconic lines from Alice in Wonderland – along with so many other words and visuals from all iterations of the Lewis Carroll classic – served as inspiration for one of the Valley’s newest bar concepts, Hatter and Hare. The bar takes over the space most recently occupied by Joe’s Midnight Run. “Our aim is to be a one-of-a-kind fantasy land for adults with elevated food and cocktails designed to match the theme,” says Anthony Georgoulis, director of operations at Hatter and Hare. “Loosely themed on the White Rabbit’s perspective of Wonderland, our decor features bright colors, bold yet whimsical designs, murals and oversized furniture. Guests can cozy

up in the Mad Hatter’s teacup or lounge on the Let-Them-Eat-Cake couch, for example.” The staff is in on the fun too, each dressed in costume fitting the theme and all too happy to help guests get into the eccentric spirit. Given it is a bar at heart, the cocktail-focused concept’s “Drink Me” beverage menu, another homage to Wonderland, features concoctions that push the creative envelope while remaining approachable. “To paint the picture, our Cheshire Cat libation changes colors before guests’ very eyes as ‘potions’ are added; and the Jabberwocky is served in a vintage-style apothecary bottle with a large teapot that will hold sharable cocktails for ‘high tea,’ Mad Hatter-style,” says Georgoulis, noting some group-sized cocktails are served in full tea sets or bucket-sized teacups as an added experiential element. Other drink highlights include the rye-based Tweedledee ($12); rum-forward Humpty Dumpty ($12); and Sazerac Hare ($10) featuring whiskey. Paying homage to its former resident, Joe’s Midnight Run, the “Eat Me” dining menu is available late into the night – until 2 a.m. Tuesday through Sunday, in fact – and includes inspired, yet laid-back small bites as well as large open-faced sandwiches for heartier appetites. Some early favorites include The Queen’s Platter ($16.50), filled with artisan meats and cheese; The Gryphon ($10.50) burrata and almond mole dish; and Corquet with Flamingos ($12), an oven-roasted turkey sandwich. In coming months, Hatter and Hare has plans for creative live acts in line with the theme as well as DJs and live music. The bar is open Tuesday through Friday from 4 p.m. to 2 a.m. and on Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. Hatter and Hare, located at 6101 N. 7th St., Phoenix; 480.865.2447; www.hatterandhareaz.com.
