The Prevene™ difference is evident from the moment you step through the door; its setting is casual, not clinical. You will find no sick patients, no prescription medication influences, only a holistic approach focusing on your lifestyle and your health. Best of all, you don’t have to fork over the extra cash to get the cutting-edge preventive care you deserve – it’s billed to your insurance just like an annual physical or a regular office visit would be. The healthcare paradigm is shifting its focus from treatment to prevention, and Prevene™ is at the forefront. “It’s time for preventive healthcare to become its own specialty, set apart from the primary care offices that are already overburdened with sick patients,” says Dr. Rotella. In a blind review, with an overall 4.95 star rating, the majority of patients stated they preferred a separate location from the busy, crowded doctor’s office – a testament to the need for programs such as Prevene Wellbeing®. Experience for yourself the amazing feeling of understanding your entire body as it relates to the future of your health with Prevene™. Your insurance plan covers your preventive healthcare, so why not take advantage of the benefits and biohack your way to a better you? Your body – and your mind – will thank you. BETTER HEALTH THROUGH BIOHACKING What if you could change your physiology and optimize your body’s performance through cutting-edge preventive care? For residents of the Valley and beyond, Prevene Wellbeing® is doing just that.

Gone are the days of traditional physical exams consisting of a height and weight check, a quick once-over, and a lab order; with Prevene Wellbeing®, you’ll learn more about your body than you ever thought possible, and “biohack” your way to optimal health using a customized plan. Prevene™ utilizes advanced 3D body scanning technology which provides you with a comprehensive look at your physical makeup, allowing you to see your body in a whole new light. workout plans and direct support, it’s a tool for ongoing success right at your fingertips. “We are seeing an overall greater need in prevention, and studies show that there is not enough time for it to be done in an overcrowded traditional treatment-based clinic,” states Joseph A. Rotella MD, DC, creator of the Prevene Wellbeing® program. Today’s patients are eager for a personalized focus on wellness, early detection, health screenings, mental health, nutrition, and an appropriate diet and exercise program for their lifestyle. ed note / July 2020

Our cover feature this month is Matt Christianer. Aside from his many bodybuilding, personal training and entrepreneurial accomplishments, his motto is what I believe many people reading his story will find most impressive: to be bold, and to be your authentic, truest self. I think that’s a message we can all learn from and hope to live out each day – now more than ever. Read all about his perseverance to succed through hardships and how he is working to change the fitness industry on page 40. Another Valley resident, Jennifer Swanton (page 44), is also living out what I believe to be a very important message to others: to pay it forward and help people when they need it most. The cancer survivor is on a mission to leave a legacy of philanthropic work, and practice gratitude throughout her life. Speaking of helping others, page 16 shares tips on keeping seniors safe this summer. And for those looking to do a little work on their relationship, page 46 talks about preventing divorce by using healthy problem-solving strategies. It’s no secret that July is hot in Scottsdale, and it’s easy to get dehydrated when temperatures are this high. Page 30 features drinks and foods that will keep you hydrated, and page 48 discusses the difference between dehydrated and dry skin, and what to do for each. Additional highlights include the mental benefits of golf that translate to everyday life (page 28), the lowdown on cupping (page 50), and a recipe for a black bean burger that you’ll crave once a week (page 18). Page 38 shares eight health benefits of tequila – yes, really! Join with me as I say “salud” and hope for a month filled with kindness and good health. Cancer Prevention

At least 18% of all cancers diagnosed in the US are related to excess body weight, physical inactivity, excess alcohol consumption, and/or poor nutrition.

Cancer is the second leading cause of death in both men and women in the United States, behind only heart disease. The American Cancer Society recently released updated guidelines for diet and physical activity, suggesting lifestyle changes can lower cancer risk. The guidelines suggest: getting to and staying at a healthy body weight; practicing moderate physical activity 150-300 minutes per week for adults and one hour per day for children and teens; spending less time being sedentary; eating your veggies, fruits and whole grains and avoiding or limiting red and processed meats; avoiding or limiting sugar-sweetened beverages, processed foods and refined grain products; and limiting alcohol. Probiotic Problems Probiotics have become a popular aid for digestive health, but a new review is stating that the live microorganisms may not be as helpful as previously believed. According to a new guideline by the American Gastroenterological Association based on a review of existing studies that looks at the link between probiotics and gut health, there’s not enough evidence to recommend using probiotics to treat most digestive diseases, save for a few cases.

Rule Relaxation COVID-19 has caused many people to rethink parts of their lives, including their health coverage. In turn, the IRS created a new rule that allows people to make midyear changes to their health plan, as opposed to previously when people were only granted changes during the open enrollment period. The only catch: It’s up to your employer whether or not they allow this.

Size Matters A reported one in four cases of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), almost always linked to smoking, occurs in people who have never smoked. A recent study conducted by Columbia University Irving Medical Center may have uncovered the reason some nonsmokers get COPD and some heavy smokers do not. Researchers looked at CT scans of more than 6,500 adults in the US and Canada, finding that those with small airways relative to their lungs’ size, called dysanapsis, were eight times more likely to develop COPD, whether or not they smoke. The Imitation Game A study conducted in Sweden by Lund University reports 6-month-old infants recognize when adults imitate them. The researchers went to the homes of 6-month-old babies, and played with them. The findings, published in PLOS One, reported babies looked and smiled longer during the close mirroring. They seemed to recognize they were being imitated and tried to approach the adult more often while they were being imitated, according to the study. Source: www. sciencedaily.com.

The Milky Truth Type 2 diabetes and hypertension are both on the rise in America, and new research shows that dairy products could lower the risk of both. Scientists looked at data from almost 150,000 people from 21 countries, analyzing participants’ food intake over a year via questionnaires. Research showed having at least two servings of dairy was associated with a 28% lower risk of metabolic syndrome and an 11% to 12% lower risk of having diabetes and high blood pressure, with an even stronger effect with whole-fat dairy. Workplace Wellness Fail Many companies have started work wellness programs over the last couple of years, but are they really working? According to a study, published in JAMA International Medicine, they are not. The twoyear study, which took place at the University of Illinois, looked at results after employees of the university took part in a typical workplace wellness program, while other employees acted as a control group. Those that did the program experienced biometric screening and surveying, an online health risk assessment, and wellness activities. The results showed no significant effect on employees’ health measures or medical use. The pro: More people had a primary care doctor at the conclusion of the study and had an improved perception of their health. Source: www. medicalnewstoday.com.

The Anti-Acne Diet A new study in JAMA Dermatology found the consumption of milk, sugary drinks and fatty and sugary foods may be associated with acne. The study examined nearly 25,000 French adults who recorded their diets over a 24-hour period twice. While there are other factors to consider, the consumptions of the aforementioned foods and beverages were found to be associated with acne. This could be due to the rise in levels of insulin, hormones and other chemicals, which create oxidative stress and inflammation and, in turn, acne. Source: www.cnn. com.

5 Summer Safety Tips for Seniors

Hot summer temperatures can be dangerous for the elderly because they are at a higher risk for respiratory distress due to an increase in heat, smog, pollution, pollen, monsoons, and even mold growth due to the humidity during the summer months. Many seniors have conditions such as asthma, high blood pressure, or heart problems that require some preparations to avoid overexposure to the sun. With caregiver training and family education on preventative measures, your loved one can enjoy a healthy, active summer. Here are five tips to follow.

1. Stay Hydrated Dehydration can affect mental performance and cause feelings of tiredness. Mental functions can include memory, attention, concentration, and reaction time. The ability to conserve water is lost when the aging process starts, and seniors tend to be less aware of thirst. Drinking plenty of fluids will keep them healthy and help flush out bacteria that can cause UTIs. 2. Companionship is Key Keeping seniors engaged is vital to maintain a will to thrive – slowing down or being socially withdrawn can cause serious depression and add problems to medical conditions that are already complex. So, whether it is watching a movie,

16

ScottsdaleHealth

07/20

taking short walks, or having a regularly scheduled game day inside, it is important to have some form of activity that keeps seniors engaged during the summer months. 3. Medication Check Check with a medical professional to make sure medications will not be affected by higher temperatures. Some medications are less effective if stored at temperatures higher than room temperature. In that case, medical conditions can be affected and create new problems on top of current conditions. 4. Wellness Watch Have someone stop by the home at least twice a week to check that the air conditioner is working properly and is set at a reasonable temperature. A fan

is not enough to stay cool during the summer. Seniors tend to not notice when it gets hot in their home. For those with a diagnosis of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, maintaining a comfortable temperature will reduce the behavioral and psychological symptoms. 5. Signs of Heat Exhaustion Be aware of heavy sweating, paleness, tiredness, weakness, and dizziness. These common complications that are associated with dehydration can also increase the risk of falls for seniors who are already at risk. Taking a cool shower, drinking plenty of fluids, reducing caffeine and alcohol, and eating lots of fruits and vegetables can help prevent heat exhaustion during the summer.

"Who Did Your Hair?" Scottsdale’s Hair Color Guru, Rod Gentry, is the go-to expert for coloring your tresses

Hair color is tricky. Ensuring the perfect shade, finishing the process with hair that is still healthy, creating the perfect look—there are not many who can do it all or who are known as the go-to expert in color. But now Scottsdale has a color guru. Rod Gentry, one of the industry’s color experts, has relocated from Chicago— where he spent 24 years working in the field—to Scottsdale.

HIS WEALTH OF KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERTISE WILL ALLOW THEM TO ACHIEVE THE LOOK THEY WANT; AND THAT THE COLOR WILL BE PERFECT, EVERY TIME. His clients know four main things about Rod: They’ll receive undivided, personalized attention at their appointment (no double booking!); he’ll use only the top and best products to ensure their hair stays healthy; his wealth of knowledge and expertise will allow them to achieve the look they want; and that the color will be perfect, every time. Rod approaches hair color differently than others, first working with a client to determine the look they want, and then taking into account the client’s complexion and lifestyle to make sure that the end result will be something that is both flattering and workable. One of his main focuses is always on the health of the hair, and so he uses only high-end, enzyme-based

developers (rather than peroxide-based ones) so that hair is left in a better condition, and extremely shiny. He also always finishes a color process with a conditioning treatment as part of the color service. “You can have long hair and great color, but if it’s damaged, it won’t look as good,” he explains. He relentlessly pursues education to stay at the top of his field, traveling worldwide to learn about the newest innovative techniques, products and knowledge, training in such places as London and New York. “I really think that education is the key to success,” he explains. Rod’s services include single process color, highlights, color gloss, color paneling, ombre, extended conditioning, color correction, color removal and more, as well as cuttingedge haircuts. “I guarantee my work. Period,” he says.

Hair color specialist Rodney Gentry is located in a private studio at Sachi Studios, 10201 N. Scottsdale Rd., Suite 10, Scottsdale, AZ 85258. For an appointment, please call 480.639.2000, or visit www.rodneygentry.com for more information.

Eat Better, Live Longer Those looking to try a new diet should consider the Japanese eating routine Hara Hachi Bu, translating in English to “belly 80% full.” Okinawa Island residents, who have the longest life expectancy in the world and the world’s highest proportion of centenarians, follow this diet closely. The eating tradition advises to stop eating when you are 80% full, giving the stomach extra space to perform digestion quicker and break food down more efficiently. The diet is also said to lower chances of health problems, including reduced acid reflux, lower risk of cancer and cardiovascular diseases, and more. The main rules to follow: eat slower, focus solely on your food and use smaller dishware. Source: www.timesofindia.com.

Go Nuts Are peanuts the secret to losing weight? Some research points to yes. Peanuts are rich in fiber, protein and healthy fats, and are linked to lower rates of obesity. The legume is lower in simple carbs, unlike many other snack foods, meaning they take longer to digest and remain in your stomach longer, helping you feel full longer. Though it’s advised be mindful of portion sizes as peanuts are dense in calories, the proof is in the peanuts that they – and other nuts – can be beneficial on your weight-loss journey.

Genetic Gains For years, many people have reported gaining weight from birth control but now there’s a genetic link. Researchers at the University of Colorado School of Medicine studied how genes inertact with hormones in birth control by reviewing the medical records of 276 women who received an etonogestrel contraceptive implant. The findings: the women had a median weight gain of about 7 pounds over an average of 27 months of use, meaning nearly 75% of the women gained weight. Scientisits also concluded that genetic variants among some women were associated with significant weight gain. This may mean that other birth control drugs could have similar interactions with genes, causing weight gain.

Drug Leaps Researchers at Virginia Tech recently identified a possible solution for obesity, diabetes and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, a fatty liver disease where fat accumulates in the liver. Named BAM15, the small mitochondrial uncoupler reportedly decreased the body fat mass of mice without affecting food intake and muscle mass or increasing body temperature in a recent study. Published in Nature Communications, the findings reported that BAM15 does not affect the satiety center in the brain, which tells our body if we are hungry or full, as mice given BAM15 ate the same amount as mice in the control group, and still lost fat mass. FASCIA: THE KEY TO IMMUNITY, ANTI-AGING, AND PAIN RELIEF Fascia is the connective tissue and watery fluid (with its associated proteins, fibers and gels) that interconnects all 70 trillion cells that make up the human body. This system has been long overlooked in the western world, but it is finally becoming heavily researched. You may have tried different therapies to manage stress and pain like meditation, yoga, acupuncture, chiropractic, physical therapy, massage, stretching, mindfulness, and frankly anything that involves moving, touch, and mind-body connection. Your fascia is the system responsible for creating the benefits that come from these therapies. Your fascia can be something that you mindfully work on to make healthy, and in turn you WILL BE healthy. If you neglect the fascia, it can cripple you. When we perform repetitive stress movements; including prolonged sitting with poor posture, playing a sport, or even holding a cell phone, we start to create more collagen fibers along the line of stress that can over time become fibrotic. This means that the connective tissue becomes so dehydrated, thick and stiff that it no longer allows for a gliding motion to occur between the tissues. Ultimately this can lead to the proliferation of fascial adhesions capable of compressing up to 2000 pounds of force. This zone of compression acts as a vice grip or boa constructor on your nerves, blood vessels, lymphatic system, muscles, tendons, cells and even bone. The millions of tiny nerve endings that live amongst the fascia can create 1000 times the pain response when chronically compressed. Fascia is responsible for debilitating pain. One of the most interesting findings in my practice has been the Fascia release at the forearms to heal neck pain, and calf and shin release to heal low back pain. If you think about it, what parts of the body do we use the most on any given day? Our hands and our feet. We use our forearm muscles and associated fascia to control our hands. Our

hands grip weights, cell phones, groceries, babies, steering wheels, knives, golf clubs, hair dryers, curling irons, computers, etc. And the calves, shins, and feet endure the body’s tireless ability to walk, run, stand and move. This fascial compression in the extremities becomes the same fascia

breast cancer. The group that received 10 min of chest stretching every day for four weeks, noticed a 52% reduction in cancer! Why did this happen? I believe it is because when we move, stretch, and create glide in our connective tissue, we generate water. This zone of tissue that was fixed, and matted with cancer was able to receive new channels of watery rich flow that allowed for white blood cells to get close enough to the cancer cells to start destroying them. Other areas of human healing associated with the fascia include any and all musculoskeletal pain, cellulite reduction, skin rejuvenation and releasing trapped emotions and energies. that turns into the neck and low back. That is why it is the missing link medical practitioners have unwittingly overlooked in the efforts to relieve consistent, chronic neck and low back pain. Another topic of current relevance is understanding how fascia plays a vital role in the overall health of the immune system. It’s quite simple, your fascia system is your immune system. The majority of our white blood cells live in the watery matrix of the fascia where they roam from cell to cell detecting harmful viruses, bacteria, fungi, and cancer. Dumbbell Domination All you need to melt away some serious fat is a set of dumbbells – yes, seriously! Break up your boring aerobic routine by grabbing a pair of lightweight dumbbells and flowing through these basic (but effective!) movements. Don’t let the simple nature of the workout fool you – these movements get real pretty quick. As always, remember to chase quality reps, not the clock.

Start with dumbbells in a reverse grip and your body in a stiff line

100 Alternating Dumbbell Split Squat Press From a half kneeling 90/90 position, push through the front heel with the back straight and chest out. As you raise up, press both dumbbells overhead. Slowly return back to the starting half kneeling position and repeat for all 50 reps on the right leg before moving onto your left leg to complete the remaining 50 reps. 100 Alternating Dumbbell Alternate Curls From a kneeling position in a straight line knee crease to top of the head, begin to curl the dumbbells, alternating from the right arm to the left arm, repeating back and forth until reaching 100 reps total – 50 reps per arm. 50 Reverse Grip Pushups With your hands on a pair of dumbbells in a reverse grip and your body in a stiff line head to heel with glutes tight and core braced, begin to pushup, touching your chest to the floor or through your full range of motion. The Mental Game Top practices of golf that enhance your everyday life

A study of 300,000 Swedish golfers conducted by the Karolinska Institute found that playing golf can cut the expected death rate by 40%, increasing life expectancy five years. In addition to golf being an excellent source of exercise and vitamin D, it can help to increase your mental health and allow you to better overcome challenges both on and off the course. Not only can you burn over 1,500 calories from playing 18 holes, but studies have shown that golfing can also help to reduce stress levels, depression, and anxiety. Here are some aspects of golf that can translate from on the course to everyday life.

28

07/20

Visualization Visualization is one of the most important aspects in the game of golf and learning how to do it on the course can translate positively into your everyday life, helping you visualize positive outcomes. Visualization has been proven to help improve concentration, boost injury recovery, reframe your thoughts from negative to positive and calm your nerves. Simply play out the scenario in your mind, picture the exact steps you will take to get to your goal and see yourself succeed. Patience For people who are always on the go and never take the time to slow down, golf can teach you the art of patience. Perfecting your swing and navigating a course takes time. Acknowledging when you are getting frustrated or feeling impatient, taking a deep breath, and focusing on the bigger picture can help in calming your mind throughout the game. Once you are in a more relaxed state of mind, your game will start to naturally improve. Adaptation Traversing through bunkers and water is frustrating but getting to the green is the ultimate satisfaction. Every course is unique and has its own challenges and by making mistakes on the course and learning to overcome different obstacles, it allows you to better adapt to adversity both in your business and personal life. Remaining Present Keeping your mind focused and present has been proven to help not only in sports, but in everyday life as well. It teaches you to not dwell on the past or worry about the future. While you can physically be present on the course, it’s easy for your mind to start to wander and become distracted from the task at hand. Focusing on your breath, your surroundings, learning how to meditate and pull yourself back into the current moment is also crucial.

Operation Hydration Food and drink combinations for warm-weather health

Most of us love the summer months, spending time anywhere the weather’s warm, hiking, boating, swimming, camping, fishing, sunbathing, and working up a good sweat. However, spending long periods of time soaking up the sun and traveling between high outdoor temperatures and cool air-conditioned indoor temperatures can lead to problems associated with electrolyte imbalance, including dehydration. Many studies show 75% of Americans do not drink enough water daily. Staying properly hydrated is the absolute best way to stay energized, healthy, and ward off potential heat exhaustion and dehydration symptoms, especially in the Arizona desert. Hydrating and rehydrating the body’s electrolytes is important for everyone. The American Chemical Society describes electrolytes as salts, ingested mainly through food, that dissolve into positive or negative charges. The body’s most crucial electrolytes are potassium, sodium, calcium, and magnesium. Electrolytes control water movement in the body’s cells, as well as the body’s nerve impulses. This means these salts play crucial roles in brain function, muscle firing and even the beating of your heart. Recognizing when you are heading toward dehydration is critical. The top signs that are you may be low in hydration include headache or migraine, poor sleep, exhaustion, physical fatigue, dizziness, low or scattered focus, bad breath, white tongue, very yellow or brownish urine and wrinkled skin on the hands and neck. There are many foods and drinks to consume to stay hydrated year-round. Fruits and vegetables carry a lot of water making them a great source of hydration. It is also important to make sure you are getting a combination of carbohydrates, protein and fat at every meal and/or snack.

Here are five easy and super hydrating food and drink combinations you can consume to triple your hydration levels within a 12-hour period. Lemon Water Drink 16 ounces of water with the juice of half of a lemon first thing in the morning. Lemon water enhances hydration and is a great source of vitamin C and a powerful antioxidant. Smoothies For the ultimate (re) hydration breakfast smoothie, try blending celery, cucumber, pineapple, fresh orange juice, basil, coconut water, plain Greek yogurt, and ice together. All these

ingredients provide amazing health benefits that will keep you full and energized all day. Lettuce Wraps Lettuce wraps are a great option for lunch. Iceberg lettuce is 96% water, making it the perfect substitute for bread. Top the lettuce with your favorite protein (chicken, steak, fish or tempeh), sliced bell peppers, shaved radish, or spiraled zucchini for added nutrition.

Infused Green Tea Sip on fruit-infused iced or hot green tea throughout the day instead of coffee. Citrus fruits brighten and soften the bitterness green tea leaves can have. Plus, they add great health benefits to an already hydrating beverage. Kababs For a hydrating dinner, veggie and protein stacked kababs with mushrooms, tomatoes, cauliflower, bell peppers and

shrimp will be the perfect way to end the day. Add a side of cantaloupe, which is 90% water, to squash your sweet tooth. Regardless of what you eat or drink throughout the day, staying hydrated during the summer (or any season) is important and it is just a matter of knowing your own body. Everyone is different! Monitor (journal or use an app) your symptoms and use trial and error to see what works for you. To keep your body hydrated on a regular basis, drink water throughout the day, do not wait until you are thirsty, and find a well-formulated hydration supplement to replenish any lost electrolytes.

crazy 8s There’s a lot of research that says drinking red wine in moderation could positively impact your health, but don’t fret if you’re not a vino lover as studies also show tequila can benefit your health. The Mexican distilled beverage, made from the blue agave plant, may just improve your well-being – hey, it’s worth a shot! Here are some facts that’ll make you grab a slice of lime and salt and say “salud!”

1. Colon cleanser. The blue agave plant contains nondigestible fructans, which have been used to help deliver drugs to the colon. These drugs fight diseases like Crohn’s disease, IBS, and ulcerative colitis. 2. Weight-loss aid. When on a diet, liquid calories are usually the first thing to go. However, tequila contains agavins (aka a type of sugar) that have a less refined structure and do not raise the blood sugar levels, allowing some of the calories to pass through unused.

Crazy Health Benefits of Tequila 38

ScottsdaleHealth

07/20

3. Metabolism and digestion helper. Tequila has been linked to digestion and metabolism aid. The way to do it: take a shot before your meal to ramp up your metabolism and stimulate your apetite, and take one after to aid the digestion of the meal. 4. Stomach assistance. Tequila’s fructans contain probiotics, so drinking the beverage

in moderation may help restore good bacteria in the digestive system. 5. Lowers chances of dementia. Studies show that drinking tequila in moderation may help prevent dementia later on in life. Worth noting, consuming too much alcohol is also linked to dementia. 6. Fights osteoporosis. The agavins in tequila have been linked to helping the body absorb calcium, which may prevent the development of fraglie or brittle bones. 7. Cold curer. Try mixing tequila with agave to soothe your throat along with lemon or lime for some vitamin C. 8. Sleep support. Though tequila is perfect for a fiesta, it’s also known to help calm nerves and relax. Though it’s important not to become reliant on tequila to fall asleep, it can help those suffering from insomnia.

Personal trainer and professional bodybuilder Matt Christianer stays true to himself while chasing after his dreams

40

41

Personal trainer Matt Christianer’s fitness career has been paved with one success after the other. He placed in several International Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness (IFBB) pro shows and won three. He made history in 2011, becoming the first IFBB pro men’s physique bodybuilder. He also competed in two Olympias (aka the Super Bowl of bodybuilding), has appeared on numerous magazine covers and, as a sponsored athlete and fitness model, has worked with some of the biggest names and brands in fitness around the world. He even made the silver screen, appearing in The Perfect Physique streaming on Netflix and Amazon Prime. But perhaps what’s more admirable than Christianer’s long list of professional accomplishments is his unapologetic approach to life, which is to always “be bold.”

NEW KID ON THE BLOCK Christianer was 15 when his family moved across the country from Ohio to Arizona. He was the victim of relentless bullying as the new kid at Payson High School. Not too long after his family relocated, Christianer started training and lifting weights to warn off his bullies. “The bullying would come back to haunt me insidiously in the forms of depression, anxiety and self-hate all throughout my 20s, but for which I would not be the man I am today all these years later,” he says.

42

ScottsdaleHealth

07/20

He befriended his next-door neighbor at the time, Bill, who was 5 feet, 8 inches tall and 180 pounds, with 5% to 6% body fat — “just a total man beast,” according to Christianer. The two commiserated over fitness and naturally fell into a mentor/ mentee type of relationship. Bill trained Christianer three days a week, teaching him everything he knew about fitness and nutrition and even got him a job at Payson Athletic Club. “I started at the front desk, which was great because I was able to make a lot of friends since I was so hated at school. I went on to learn every position in that gym, which is what initially piqued my interest in personal training,” Christianer says. After two years of consistent and rigorous training with Bill, Christianer’s body bulked up from 90 to 125 pounds. He was beginning to feel empowered to stand up for himself in his school’s hallways. However, at 17, his progress came to a screeching halt after getting in a near fatal car accident on Highway 87.

LEAPING OVER ADVERSITY A broken hip. A fractured femur. Head trauma. Lacerations from head to toe. It was a miracle Christianer was still alive. He underwent emergency surgery for his hip upon arriving to HonorHealth Scottsdale Osborn Medical Center and spent the next several months in a wheelchair. Although his body was working against him, Christianer was still committed to his training. “You have to keep moving forward, even at times when it’s hard to crawl,” he says. “I remember wheeling myself into the gym for the first time. If it weren’t for the friends at the gym racking and reracking my weights, I don’t know how I would have done it.” A year later, Christianer underwent another hip surgery to remove all the hardware from the initial surgery. Rehabilitation was harder this time around. Plagued by physical and mental pain, Christianer attempted to take his own life and was committed to a mental health hospital by age 20. “They pumped me so full of antidepressants, antipsychotics and mood stabilizers, I spent the next year of my life in bed,” he says. “I missed the gym for an entire year. I was a zombie. But I read, researched and prayed, and pushed myself back into society and into going full steam for my dreams.” Christianer moved to Florida and became a certified personal trainer through the National Personal Training Institute. He then lived on his friend’s couch — what he describes as “the most uncomfortable couch in the world” — in Hollywood for a few years and competed in bodybuilding show after bodybuilding show. He was sponsored by brands like 6 Pack Bags, Dicks Sporting Goods and Pro Supps and landed interviews with Muscle & Fitness, Reps Magazine and the likes. Christianer was at the prime of his game. “I stayed in top shape. I did not drink or do drugs. I trained, ate clean, posed, auditioned, competed. I would not be distracted,” he says. In 2016, after moving back to Arizona, Christianer underwent

a third hip surgery – a total hip replacement this time. Wesley Kress of Arizona Aesthetics and Wellness introduced Christianer to a rehabilitation gamechanger: neufit training and therapy. “Nuefit took my leg rehabilitation and leg training to levels I had always dreamt of. It helped reprogram how my muscle was firing, or not firing for that matter, especially my glute and hamstring activation,” he says. At the time of hip replacement surgery, Christianer started dating his now-fiancee Heather. “Heather moved heaven and earth to take care of me before and after my surgery,” he says. “I’m eternally grateful and blessed to have her in my life.”

NEW VENTURES Christianer was so focused on building his fitness portfolio in his 20s that he failed to see all the lessons he learned along the way in resiliency and self-love until his 30s. Now wiser at 36, his focus is to use his 16 years of personal training experience and knowledge as a veteran bodybuilder to help others learn those invaluable life lessons through exercise. He offers training and coaching online (www.arizonaaw.com/matt) and in person at Arizona Aesthetics and Wellness. “Nothing gives you that warm, fuzzy feeling in your heart than when you play a part in changing someone’s life for the better,” he says. Christianer is also busy working on his first e-book, The Unofficial Guide to Marijuana and Fitness. Set to be released later this month, the his book sheds light on medicinal marijuana for training and athletic recovery. Christianer unpacks the history of cannabis, explains the benefits of the different strains and terpenes and shares his own life-changing experiences using the drug. “Marijuana has changed my life,” he says. “It helped me overcome a car accident, three hip surgeries, severe depression, arthritis, inflammation, helped me get off other medications and, my favorite, heightened my sensory perception. That’s where the mind-to-muscle connection is taken to the next level.” Additionally, he partnered with a local cannabis specialist, and together they are working to produce revolutionary products that aid in athletic training. The products are still in the prototype phase. “It is our goal to be the first to truly fuse the titanic industries of marijuana and fitness and to teach people how to reap the physical and mental benefits of both,” Christianer says. Through everything he does, Christianer abides by his life mantra to “be bold.” “Being bold simply means voicing my truth, without regret, but with self-confidence,” he says. “Being bold takes all the weight off your shoulders, it breaks the chains that bind us inside. Once you truly stop caring about the opinions of others or trying to be liked by everyone, you can just be you, unregretfully you” To learn more, visit www.arizonaaw.com/matt or follow Christianer on Instagram, @mattchristianer.

If you were to ask Jennifer Swanton to describe herself in five words she would say: survivor, blessed, humble, gratitude, and driven. Originally from the Midwest, Swanton has gone through more than what the average person experiences in a lifetime, coming out the other side with a positive attitude and drive to make an impact in the community.

MAKING HER MARK Swanton moved to Arizona in 2001 in search of sunshine and warm weather. She found Scottsdale was the opportune place for her to connect and network with others in order to help people and businesses and develop nonprofits. Her passion to pay it forward stems from a traumatic experience from her teen years. At age 15, Swanton was diagnosed with leukemia after a routine sports physical. At the time, cancer, in general, was not as common, and this type of cancer, acute myeloid leukemia, had only a 25% survival rate but her family, positive attitude, and the power of prayer gave her the determination to fight the battle that lie ahead. “This is the approach that guides me to live each day to my best,” she says. “It is not lost on me that my life was spared, and I believe it is my purpose to give back and make an impact in the community.” Her opportunity to give back came with the introduction of Team in Training, a running and cycling program that benefits Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS). An avid sports player since third grade, Swanton has always had a love for physical activity and took this as a sign that it was the right way to to fulfill her purpose as a cancer survivor. The next thing she knew, she was registered to run a marathon in Alaska. “I had never run more than three miles in

my life, but was provided the coaching I needed to cross the finish line,” she says. After completing her first triathlon in New York through Team in Training, Swanton earned her “triple crown” by completing a 100-mile cycling event around Lake Tahoe. She also raised $50,000 to earn a research portfolio in her name for LLS. “Since cancer and chemo took away my ability to have children, this is my way

to leave a legacy and has been one of my greatest accomplishments,” she says.

INSPIRED & INVOLVED These days, Swanton spends her time riding, running, and strength training. “I strive to look like fitness is my job, even though it is not, as it has always been a goal to inspire others and to be featured in fitness articles and images.” Swanton aims to spread the message that it’s possible for people to be healthy

and fit no matter what their situation is, and she believes that doing something, in terms of diet and exercise, is always better than nothing. Encouraging others to take small steps in the right direction is at the top of her priority list. Swanton serves on the Board of Trustees for LLS, serves as an advocate and chair member for the Community Council for Light The Night walk, is a cochair of the executive committee for M3F, Arizona’s only nonprofit music festival, and is a Fiesta Bowl Future Yellow Jacket Committee member. These volunteer positions feed Swanton’s soul and passion to make a difference in the lives of others while allowing her to grow personally and professionally. Inspired by people, songs, television shows, stories, scripture, and movies, Swanton aims to find inspiration in all facets of her life. “I think it depends on what you need at the moment to motivate you,” she says of where to find inspiration. “Every day we should have a mission to learn and grow. Be kind to one another. It’s simple.” Her philanthropic-centered heart and ability to connect with others allows her to pursue opportunities and help others and their businesses. “Volunteering, especially during this interesting time in the world, has been very rewarding,” she says. Swanton’s upcoming agenda is full as she’s working on growing LLS, M3F, and Fiesta Bowl nonprofits by sharing their impact with others, recruiting people to join the causes, and fundraising so they can change more lives. She is also looking for new professional opportunities that will allow her to use her gifts, skills, and talents as a driven woman with a competitive spirit. One day she wishes to dive into entrepreneurship and launch products and concepts that she has invented and designed.

can help you both to move beyond any hurt feelings. This avoids resentment that can lead to divorce. Attack Disagreements, Not Each Other Divorce is more likely when spouses attack each other’s character, rather than attacking the disagreement to solve the problem. Here’s a strategy to productively solve a problem: Working together, define the disagreement Write the problem down and put it on the kitchen table Sit down next to each other at the table (not across from each other)

Preventing Divorce

Create reasonable options that could become a compromise solution

Healthy problem-solving strategies to save your marriage Preventing arguments is not the secret to a successful marriage. Disagreements are normal in all relationships. Couples who solve problems together and care about recovering from conflict will likely stay and grow together. These problem-solving strategies can help you and your spouse strengthen your marriage and avoid the pitfalls that usually end in divorce. Turn “Harsh Starts” into “Soft Starts” How a discussion begins determines how it will end. According to Dr. John Gottman, starting a conversation with a harsh statement makes it almost impossible for it to end well. Divorce may be inevitable when “harsh” becomes the norm. “Harsh

starts” are aggressive and blame the other person. They usually begin with the word “you” and include extreme words like “always” and “never.” A harsh start will make your spouse feel attacked and they are likely to respond in a defensive way. A “soft start” makes a complaint but protects your spouse from feeling attacked.

Kindly state only the facts and avoid negative accusations or exaggerations. Describe how you feel and specifically say what you want. Soft starts lead to more emotional and physical intimacy. Make Genuine “Repair Attempts” Divorce is more likely for couples who are unable to recover

from arguments. A “repair attempt” is something said or done — silly or serious — that stops negativity from getting out of control. After a heated argument, time is of the essence for one spouse to make a “repair attempt,” and for the other to accept the ”repair attempt,” to quickly recover and return to normalcy. After minor

arguments, you can use humor to repair possible damage. A simple apology or gentle hug can calm the situation. After major arguments, you need to clearly own your part in causing the problem and sincerely apologize. Ask what your spouse needs from you to move forward. Using a calm voice and conveying a cooperative attitude

When you both say “yes” to a proposed solution, you both win! Always remain respectful. Namecalling, blaming and putting your partner down during a disagreement will lead you closer to divorce. Stay hopeful and positive. Come back to it later if you need a break. When preventing divorce is not an option, consider divorce mediation, rather than court litigation, to separate in a way that solves problems, keeps conflict low and protects the children.

Dehydrated Versus Dry Skin How to spot the difference

The hot Phoenix summers can cause skin to feel drier than normal, but are you experiencing dehydration or dry skin? Dehydration is a skin condition caused by lack of water retention in the skin, while dryness is a skin type that you are born with. Nourish your skin this summer by learning the difference between the two and how to treat them with these tips.

Dehydrated Skin Anyone can experience dehydrated skin regardless of their skin type. Skin becomes dehydrated due to a lack of water and can be caused by many external factors. Weather, environment, diet and caffeine consumption can all contribute to dehydrated skin. You may notice that your skin looks dull, feels loose or dark circles have appeared under your eyes. A simple way to test your skin’s hydration is a pinch test. Pinch a small area of skin on the back of your hand or cheek. If the skin takes a moment

to snap back, you’re likely dehydrated. In addition to increasing your water intake, hyaluronic acid is a great product to replenish your skin as it pulls moisture to the surface of the skin. Avoid using harsh products including exfoliants and retinol until your skin is rehydrated. Dry Skin Like oily or combination skin, dryness is a skin type. People with this complexion lack naturally occurring oils, or lipids, so skin becomes flaky, red and dry. It’s important to be gentle to prevent further irritation, so

avoid harsh, drying cleansers and soaps and use lukewarm water. You may think that exfoliating will remove flaky skin, but it can remove the natural oils from your face and make dryness worse. Try sealing in your moisturizer or essential oils overnight with a thick ointment to lock in moisture. Sleeping with a humidifier is another simple way to boost moisture levels in your skin. The Importance of Hydration While drinking more water won’t completely solve skin issues, it’s extremely important to hydrate

from the inside out, too. Eight glasses of water a day will greatly improve skin hydration and increase elasticity. The more elastic your skin is, the fewer wrinkles you’ll see. Don’t let the summer heat wreak havoc on your skin. In addition to taking proper steps to prevent dehydration and dryness, incorporate sunscreen into your daily routine to prevent sun damage. Finally, keep your hormones in check and replenish as needed, and avoid tobacco products. You’ll notice your skin will look better than ever.

Permanent Make-up

& BEYOND Microblading

BEYOND MICROBLADING As a permanent make up technician and trainer for nearly 30 years I’ve seen many trends come and go. These days one of the first things I hear from people inquiring about services is “I don’t want tattooed eyebrows. I want the soft powdery look that you did for my friend.” This is when I educate the public on the truth about permanent make up and the truth is it’s all tattoo. Years ago when permanent make up was just a fledgling industry in this country many of us worked in the offices of plastic surgeons. We called the procedure micro pigment implantation. Then different techniques were marketed using trade words like soft tap, and recently microblading has been all the rage. Known as the “queen of conservative” My specialty is custom blending colors for each person. Shape, color, technique and science are what create the artistry for beautifully natural eyebrows. Eyelash enhancements. Due to the lockdown most people have lost their eyelash extensions. This is the perfect time to touch up permanent eyeliner before reapplying lashes. I love to create a rich smokey looking lash line rather than a harsh eyeliner look. Safety first. Due to the intimate nature of these procedures safety has always been at the very top of the list. Hospital grade disinfectants are used on surfaces between clients and most importantly all instruments are new, sterile and disposable. Yea! With your safety in mind I will be wearing a mask through your procedure and if you like I will happily provide you with one as well. Because my studio is completely private you need not worry about ever encountering a crowded salon environment.

Sucked In

What to know about cupping before you try it Ever since Olympic athlete Michael Phelps was seen sporting bruise-like marks on his back after winning the gold medal at the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, interest in cupping started to rise. Cupping isn’t a common therapy in the U.S., so many people don’t understand the real history and benefits behind the practice. So, what is cupping? Is it safe? And more importantly, what does it treat? Before you make an appointment, check out these five things to know about cupping. Cupping isn’t new Cupping is not a new, trendy practice. The therapy has been around for thousands of years and dates to ancient Egyptian, Chinese and Middle Eastern cultures. Chinese healers originally used bamboo and cattle horns as cups by placing the horns or bamboo in boiling water, creating negative pressure in the bamboo and horns. Through their respective ancient assessments, the providers are able to use cupping to adjunctively

treat their patient’s symptoms. It’s a safe therapy Cupping is very safe if it is performed by a certified professional. Normally it is performed by acupuncturists, although there are many other healers that take part in the practice. Trained professionals always clean the cups before applying them to the patient’s skin. Once the cups are applied, the patient will feel suction from the cup on their skin. This process affects the flow of Qi, energy flow,

and blood. However, in a sports medicine practice, cupping can be helpful in releasing trigger points, promoting circulation, and breaking down restrictions in tissue. There are different methods Patients can choose from a variety of cupping methods. The most popular cupping method involves the practitioner using glass, rubber or plastic cups to create suction on the patient’s skin. This stationary method involves a portable pump which is insert-

ed onto the cup to create suction. It is not unusual to see numerous cups ranging from one to 15, or more, in a single visit. Another technique is running cupping, which allows the practitioner to move the cup around a large area of the patient’s skin to treat fascia and help breakdown adhesions. Lotions, oils, and sprays can be used to help facilitate their movement. Make sure to let your provider know if you have any sensitivities to oils or lotions.

It treats a variety of conditions Cupping has proven to be a very therapeutic process. It can aid in muscle spasms, injuries and pain. The negative pressure cupping generates on the skin, stretching the tissue which in turn affects the blood vessels. The therapeutic effects enhance blood flow and circulation, improving inflammation and pain. It could leave a temporary mark After a patient receives cupping treatment, they will likely notice a purple bruise-like mark left on their body. Don’t worry, even though this mark looks painful, it is not. In fact, it’s not even considered a bruise, according to recent research. The mark is just an indication of increased circulation in the body and will fade after a couple of days.
