OFF MICROCHIPS AT VETS4PETS FILTON www.filtonvoice.co.uk

Petcare with Michael Parry of Vets4Pets in Filton Firework fear

Fireworks? I know the 5th November seems a long way off when we are still hoping that we might get some summer but it is not that many weeks away. It is best to think and act ahead, for example ADAPTIL and FELIWAY are particularly effective if used for several weeks beforehand. There are several steps pet owners can take to minimise stress during firework season:

any upheaval and just make the space comfortable, accessible and safe.

Create a den

Plug it in

Provide a place where a pet can feel safe that is protected from the noise and flashing lights. Ideally this should be prepared in advance so they can get used it, however if it already has a bolthole, avoid

Plugging in an Adaptil diffuser will provide further comfort to dogs as it releases pheromones which mimic those a mother uses to comfort her young. The diffuser should be placed close to the den or

hiding place to ensure they feel as safe and secure as possible. Plugging in a Feliway diffuser for cats can help them cope with changes to the environment as it releases a copy of the facial pheromone cats deposit when they rub their head on items in the home – marking them as safe. Cats can become upset if access to outside is restricted during fireworks.

Provide distractions in the Call 969 8400 form of new0117 toys and chews. Draw the curtains and put the TV or play music on to mask the noise of any fireworks going off.

Shut it

Owners need to try to act normal while the fireworks are going off and ignore any fearful behaviour. It is important not to comfort pets; dogs will pick up on the owner’s anxiety, making the problem worse. DO NOT punish pets as this will make them more distressed. See our advert on Page 19

To avoid the possibility of a pet escaping during the season make sure all windows, doors and cat flaps are securely closed. Ensure pets are microchipped in case they do escape.
