A new era is set to begin at Filton Golf Club with a Par 3 course set to launch next summer and a driving range to open in the next 18 months. Both will be open to the public.
The club, at the end of Golf Course lane and overlooking the former Filton Airfield, already has a scenic 18-hole course for its
520 members. The new plans are aimed at encouraging more local people, young and old, to play the game. The club has already invested more than £1m in the project.
The Par 3 course will be nine holes (six initially) which are typically 120-200 yards in length, meaning a game might last just
an hour as opposed to the 3-4 hours of a full 18-hole round. The club say this might appeal to players who want to have a taste of golf but are not sure about committing to a full membership.
The driving range of 15 bays will give golfers the chance to hit balls and utilise the latest laser ball tracking technology to Turn to Page 5

study their efforts. Both facilities will be 'pay to play' with a full membership not needed.
The Par 3 course is already being constructed on land owned by the club beyond the 18th green while the driving range will be situated on the current practice range, with balls being struck away from the club.
General manager Sue Elliott said the facilities would be unique in north Bristol for a 'members'' club.
She said: "We are hoping that we can attract families and people who are interested in golf but still not sure about making the leap to full membership.
"We also want to encourage primary schools to get involved and we are hoping the driving range can be attractive to SGS College's golf programmes. This is all part of our plans to develop the club.
"Many people don't even
know that there is a golf course here but we have a beautiful setting, fantastic facilities for food and drink and our professional shop for the best equipment and coaching."
Club chair Mark Ford said: "It is so important for us to engage the local community and we think these plans will do just that. We also hope to get kids into golf early."

Candidate says MP 'voted to keep parents in the dark' about crumbling schools
Filton parliamentary candidate Claire Hazelgrove has criticised MP Jack Lopresti for voting to 'keep parents in the dark' about 'crumbling' local schools
Official data from the Department of Education showed that there are at least 32 schools in the Filton and Bradley Stoke constituency with buildings in “poor” or “bad” condition, meaning that they require urgent repairs. But local families have not been told the scale of disrepair or when the buildings would be fixed.
In May, the Labour Party tried to force the publication of information about the true state of England’s 24,000 school buildings almost two years after the School Buildings Condition Survey revealed “alarming”
problems within the school estate but still without the detail about which schools.
Mr Lopresti was among 289 Conservative MPs who voted against Labour’s motion to uncover this data and share it with families, meaning it was rejected.
Ms Hazelgrove said Mr Lopresti had “voted to keep parents in the dark” about the extent of disrepair in local schools.
The repairs needed are not thought to include the current at-risk concrete seeing a number of schools closing around the country.
An internal government report leaked to the Observer newspaper in May 2022 revealed that school buildings in England
are now in such disrepair they posed a “risk to life”.
The Department for Education subsequently raised
the risk of school buildings collapsing from “critical” to “critical – very likely” in its annual report in December 2022, after an increase in serious structural issues were reported.
Ms Hazelgrove said: "Despite assurances given to Labour in Parliament that further data detailing the precise condition of individual buildings would be published by the end of 2022, the Schools Minister backtracked, refusing to give a date for publication when questioned in the House of Commons earlier this year.
"The Conservatives have failed to get to grips with the crumbling state of school buildings.
“The current Conservative MP had a choice: show he’s on the side of local parents, or a failed government that wants to keep families in the dark about the safety of local school buildings. "Shockingly, he voted for the latter.”
Mr Lopresti was approached for a comment.

I'm worried I'll be 'sandwiched' between HMOs
by Shane Gibson Charles Road resident Cherie Millett says
she is being 'sandwiched' by HMOs (Houses in Multiple Occupation).
Cherie’s home, 1 Charles Road is next door to a 5-bedroom HMO (3 Charles Road) which is currently being converted into an 8-bedroom HMO with an application in process.
On the other side of her home is 798 Filton Avenue.
This property has been granted planning permission for a two-storey extension to form additional living accommodation. It has also been granted permission for an erection of one attached dwelling with access and works. (P22/03665/F)
A further application has been submitted for an erection of an annexe ancillary to the main dwelling. (P23/00977/HH)
Following a public Filton Town Council Planning Committee meeting,
Independent councillor Andy Robinson said: “798 Filton Avenue will be an extended house plus a new house or flat and an annexe. Residents had taken issue with the application believing, that 1 Charles Road would be sandwiched between two HMOs including the preexisting HMO, 3 Charles Road.
"Currently, 798 Filton Avenue is not an HMO and so sandwiching is not applicable.”
Cherie is worried that 798 Filton Avenue will become a
student HMO in the future.
She said: “I do not have a problem with HMOs. 800 Filton Avenue is just across from me, and the people living there are lovely. Nor do I have a problem with students. But streets with families, elderly residents, and people working all hours is not the right place for so many students who have no interest in acting with consideration for their neighbours.”
South Gloucestershire Councillor Adam Monk said:
“When Article 4 is in place, we will use it to help with the congestion of HMOs in Filton. Typically, Article 4 has been used to enforce landlords to provide HMOs that are to a suitable standard for those living there.
"However, I am told that HMOs in Filton are of a good quality and we just need to control the numbers. That said, we can only influence what will happen and not what has already happened.
"For example, if a property like 798 Filton Avenue was to apply to become an HMO, which would sandwich 1 Charles Road a private home between it and another pre-existing HMO such as 3 Charles Road, the application would be rejected.
"However, we cannot force a reduction of the current number of existing HMOs. I do not believe either council or the public wish anyone to be made homeless.”

HMOs - what the developers say
The increase in HMOs in Filton is showing no sign of slowing down, with five new planning applications and three homes being given approvals in September. Houses in Multiple Occupation are popular in Filton for students and single people. Campaigners say Filton has too many HMOs, leading to a change in the character of the town and bringing significant parking problems. Developers say HMOs are needed to address the housing shortage.
27 Third Avenue
Developer: The property meets licensing standards for internal accommodation and is currently operating as an HMO.
7 Northville Road
Developer: It is acknowledged that any lawful use would have to commence before the introduction of the Filton Article 4 direction on the 10th January 2024.
5 The Mead
Developer: Whilst a common concern with regards to HMO conversions is an increase in noise and disturbance, these issues can be dealt with through environmental protection legislation if they arise. We would note the change of use from a up to 6-bed small HMO to a 8-bed large HMO is a small increase on the number of occupants.
19 Ferndale Road
Developer: The requirement for a mandatory HMO licence for a large HMO will ensure that the property is well managed, and that the amenity of neighbours is not prejudiced.
75 Conygre Road
Developer: The proposal provides a new front driveway to provide an additional two off street parking spaces. The proposal therefore provides 4
Loft Boarding & Insulation
off-street spaces and is in accordance with Council policy for HMO parking provision (0.5 space per bedspace).
104 Station Road
Approved with conditions
Developer: The dwelling is currently being converted to a six-bedroom small dwelling house in multiple occupation, and providing that the use commences prior to the 10th January 2024, can be used as a C4 small house in multiple occupation without the need expressed planning permission.
6 Mackie Avenue
Approved with conditions
Developer: The dwelling can accommodate, through the utilisation of current PDR, six unrelated people. The change of use to a large HMO for up to 7 people, and associated extensions, would not impact on residential or neighbour amenity, or the character and appearance of the area or host dwelling.
30 Warren Road
Approved with conditions
Developer: We would note the change of use from a up to 6-bed small HMO to a 7-bed large HMO is a small increase on the number of occupants.

Approval for 'excessively tall' student flats
by BBC LDRS team for Filtonvoice Plans for an “excessively tall” nine-storey block of flats for 330 students at the University of the West of England (UWE) students near Sainsbury's in Filton have been approved.
South Gloucestershire councillors granted planning permission for the “landmark” spiral-design building on the former B&Q garden centre site at Filton Retail Park, despite concerns about road safety as the apartments will be on the other side of the ring road to the north.
Cllr Trevor Jones
(Conservative, Winterbourne) told the development management committee: "I’m really concerned about the pedestrian traffic for this development.
“My concern about the way officers are dealing with the crossing on the A4174 is that it

does not deal with the idiots. I’ve watched people dash across the road without waiting for a green man or, even worse, stopping in the middle for a chat.
“I don’t want to hear a month after this place opens that someone has been wiped out on that crossing.
“There needs to be better lighting and better traffic lights.”
Highways officer Chris Rose said: “We’ve checked this crossing out with the civil engineer and it’s working perfectly okay.
“You press the button, the traffic stops, it allows enough time to cross and then it goes green again for the traffic.”
Stoke Gifford Parish Council chairman Andrew Shore echoed the concerns about road safety and said there would be insufficient parking and loss of neighbours’ privacy, while the building, ranging from five to nine storeys, was out of keeping with the area.
He said purpose-built student accommodation should be contained within the campus and not the other side of the dual carriageway.
One resident told the committee: “We need to remember this is Stoke Gifford, not UWE Town.”
She said the development would “swamp” existing facilities that were already under pressure.
“There is no need for a landmark building – we don’t need fingers pointing at the sky, we need practical facilities,” she added.
Mr Rose said students would have to sign a contract not to bring a car within two miles, so parking was not an issue.
Principal planning officer David Stockdale said the site was “highly sustainable”, located near
two railway stations, bus routes, UWE’s bus terminal and shops and that a nearby NHS building was higher.
He said concerns about neighbours’ homes being overlooked from the new flats were unfounded because the nearest properties were more than 100 metres away.
Cllr June Bamford (Conservative, Hanham) said: “The old B&Q site is very derelict and something needs to be done.
“We might have liked a community project there but nothing else is on offer and UWE do need more space for the students.”
She said the building would have a “considerable visual impact” so planning officers must negotiate an acceptable final design as part of the conditions attached to the consent.
Members voted 7-1 to accept officers’ recommendation to approve the plans by investors Canada Life Asset Management.

Filton Town Council
Update on leisure centre
Town Councillors have been hearing about progress on the new leisure centre in Filton.
A presentation from Active Nation at the council finance meeting in September revealed the centre is in track to open in early 2024,
Much of the structural work is now complete with power, heat and 'decoration' planned for October, and the handover scheduled for November.
The two-floor building will have a cafe, soft play, changing rooms and the existing pool on the ground floor.
The first floor will have a fitness suite, a studio and function room, offices for the town council and a party room.
Councillors also heard that several environmentally friendly features had been built into the design including solar panels and the construction was completed where possible using local suppliers.

Airfield church's 1st birthday
A church based at Filton Airfield has marked its one-year anniversary with a special service with baptisms at Aerospace Bristol.
Launched in September 2022, Concord Church is a new church plant sent out from St Nicholas Bristol (the initial group of people (and leadership) were worshipping at St Nicholas Bristol but were commissioned with seed funding to start the Church).
This was done in partnership with the Diocese of Bristol and HTB Church and the church is one of the newest in the Diocese of Bristol.
It meets on Filton Airfield at the Aerospace Bristol museum, the home of the Concorde Aircraft, and is inspired by the aircraft and the heritage of innovation and pioneering in Filton.
Way A Head
Revd Andy Carter, Concord Church Leader, said: “We were thrilled to be celebrating our 1st Birthday as Concord Church.
"We gave thanks for all that has happened over the past year with a celebration this Sunday with baptisms, bubbly and cake.
"We'd love everyone to join us as we continue the adventure as a church in the new housing developments on Filton Airfield.”
On Friday 6th October at 7.30pm, Concord Church will be also throwing a party at Aerospace Bristol with dinner, drinks and a silent disco. Everybody is welcome.
Tickets available at £5 on the Concord Church website.
Concord Church was commissioned in September 2022 by the Rt Revd Vivienne Faull, Bishop of Bristol, to be a new church to the new housing areas on Filton Airfield.
Rail ticket office closure 'stupid'
Bristol City Council has passed a motion to publicly oppose and condemn the “staggeringly stupid” proposed closure of all the region’s railway ticket offices.
Labour Cllr Tim Rippington’s suggestion received unanimous cross-party support in the chamber. The declaration follows a similar move by South Gloucestershire Council in July.
The Rail Delivery Group wants to shut almost every ticket office in the UK, including Bristol Parkway, Filton Abbey Wood and Bristol Temple Meads.
Cllr Rippington (Labour, Brislington East) told a full council meeting on Tuesday, September 12: “Rail operators say 99 per cent of tickets bought at ticket offices could be bought online. They forgot to add ‘if you are tech-savvy, have internet access, understand which type of ticket suits you best and don’t want to ask for advice’."

Opinion - free parking in Filton
Last month, Filtonvoice revealed that a row had broken out over a threat to free parking in South Gloucestershire – which could affect three locations in Filton.
Opposition Conservatives have discovered that Labour – one-half of the new administration with the Lib Dems – discussed introducing charges at council-run car parks at a recent group meeting of its members.
In Filton, South Glos runs the car parks at Church Road; Filton Abbeywood Station; and Station Road.
But the coalition has fired back, saying the Tories disguised a line in the annual budget last February, when they still ran the local authority, that promised £5million of extra money for council coffers but kept it a secret that this would be from new parking fees.
The Lib Dems and Labour say they would have opposed it had they known and that they are now left to implement the charges that have been effectively introduced by the Conservatives, unless they can somehow find the money from other services.
Now Filtonvoice has received a letter from a concerned couple in Nutfield Grove, which is near the Filton Abbeywood Station car park
It will be chaos for residents
Dear editor
As a resident of Nutfield Grove, I would like to point out that if the free parking is removed from Abbeywood train station , even more of their customers will use surrounding streets as a car parks .
This will cause even more chaos for residents, not only on Nutfield Grove, but surrounding areas, as several times on Nutfield Grove driveways have been totally or partially blocked which has made it impossible or difficult for residents to use their vehicles. This is by inconsiderate drivers who park their cars and leave them, sometimes for days.
Nutfield Grove consists of an ageing population, some of whom relyon family, carers or nursing staff visiting daily. Also some residents rely on their cars and mobile vehicles for shopping and attending appointments.
Railway passengers have also on numerous occasions driven and parked on Nutfield Grove, as currently satellite navigation directs drivers and foot passengers to the station through Nutfield Grove and
into the residential Nutfield House care home car park, where there is no actual access to the station .
This situation isn't helped that there are no signs directing foot passengers from Nutfield Grove to the actual station and car park, even though I have suggested this to Network Rail on several occasions. Not only do train station customers use Nutfield Grove to park, but also employees of Abbey Wood, and by doing so leave no spaces for family and friends to park and visit . There are signs at the end of Nutfield Grove which state that parking is for residents and their visitors only, which selfish drivers ignore.
My suggestion and a possible solution to the problem would be to issue parking permits for residents in the surrounding areas if /when free parking is abolished.
I look forward to a response from the council regarding the current parking issue that residents of Nutfield Grove are experiencing at this time.

Barry is an advanced motoristat 89!
New associates were welcomed recently to the first of three seminars of the Advanced Driver Course run by Bristol Advanced Motorists at the BAWA Centre in Filton. It was also an opportunity to present certificates to associates who had recently passed the Advanced Driver test.
One of these was John (Barry) Martin, who passed the test in June, pictured with his observer Brian Hartley. Barry is 89 years old and must be a contender for the title of most senior associate to pass the advanced test with the Bristol group. His success shows that it is never too late to acquire a new skill.
Recognising that the majority of collisions are caused by driver error, the IAM RoadSmart Advanced Driver course and test was introduced to significantly improve driving standards using the principles of advanced driving pioneered and applied with unparalleled success by the Metropolitan Police. The test is conducted by a serving or retired Police Class 1 Qualified Examiner independent of the Bristol group.
As a bonus, for drivers aged 60 and over who live in the Avon and Somerset Police area, Avon and Somerset Police Community Trust provides funding for Bristol Advanced Motorists to give a full refund of the course fee when they pass the test.

With NHS dentists hard to find, local people are rightly concerned about their mouth health. But there might be an alternative. In the first of a regular series of columns, SarahJoy Lendon, the 'Virtual Hygenist, offers tips on how you can take steps yourself to reduce your need to visit the dentist
1 Toothbrush tips
Confused by all the toothbrushes available to you? Don't know how to choose a great, effective toothbrush so end up choosing it based purely on the colour? Or relying on a brand name you've seen advertised so opt for that brand, despite the cost?
I see people in the toothcare aisle of a supermarket looking confused and pondering over which products to buy. I desperately want to suggest an option for them, and in fact have done in the past, but as I'm never really sure how my well-meaning advice will be received, I do try to keep myself to myself!
So, here I am, pleased that I can offer my advice to those that want it, to those that are interested in making the right choices for their mouth without feeling I am intruding on their Sunday morning shopping trip.
Next time you need a new toothbrush, and remember, that should be at least every three months, opt for one that has a small head and a medium bristle with no fancy features like polishing cups or little rubber pieces that are meant to floss your teeth.
The small head allows you to reach all areas of your mouth and the medium bristles are best for actually cleaning your teeth.
As for colour, choose the one you like the most!
