Local people and visitors can find their way around Filton with a new creative map of the areaand you can pull it out and display it if you turn to pages 16 and 17 of this issue.

The South Glos-funded map, which is also on display at Filton Library, highlights everything the area has to offer shoppers and visitors. It has been designed in collaboration with local young people, Filton Town Council, businesses owners and community groups.

South Glos is working with community stakeholders in Filton to make a number of improvements to the area. These include:

• Six new benches to be installed in Filton Community Garden and Elm Park

• Planting to make Filton Community Gardens more pollinator friendly,

• Repair work near shops along the Gloucester Road North to help prevent flooding.

• Market research on future improvements to support traders and shoppers.

Driver fines: NO for roundabout plan but YES for rat run

South Glos Council will NOT be taking forward plans to fine drivers who stop in the yellow box junctions at Filton Roundabout.

As Filtonvoice reported earlier this year, the council was applying for new enforcement powers but following a consultation, this plan has been shelved.

However they DO want to take over responsibility and possibly issue fines for the Kenmore Drive scheme, where there is a “high level of abuse” by drivers ignoring the part-time no-entry signs where Kenmore Drive meets Kenmore Crescent in Filton, which is used as a rat-run to avoid Southmead Road during rush hour and an application has been submitted to government.

Filton businesses fighting back amid cost of living crisis - but it's not easy, they say

Everyone everywhere is struggling financially at the moment, with energy bills rising, food prices going through the roof and wages, if they rise at all, certainly not doing so anywhere near the rate of inflation. We are undeniably in tough times.

Filton Voice caught up with three long-standing Filton businesses to find out how things have been for them as they navigate the tricky times both post-pandemic and in the middle of a massive financial crisis.

goto IT

Based on Gloucester Road North, goto iT has been run by Graham Simmonds since 1999 with the business providing a range of computer repairs and support services. Graham tells us how things have been for him:

“A small percentage of our customers are residential clients but the majority of our work is supporting companies with their IT needs.

"We haven’t seen businesses reducing their support with us.

In fact, we’ve taken on some new clients this year, so things are pretty good. I’m hopeful and positive. But we’re always wondering what will happen in 12 months’ time.

“While we haven’t seen a reduction in residential work, we have noticed people are keeping old pieces of equipment running for longer.

"And as one of the services we offer is repair of laptops, PCs and mobile phones, our shop is important to many residents and, of course, we are grateful for their custom.

“As for energy bills, while we have seen an increase in costs in this area, fortunately we have managed to absorb the costs without putting up our charges. Luckily, we are not dependent on a lot of high-energy items.

"We have always tried to be energy efficient, but we have continued to look at ways to reduce our energy bill where possible, such as low-energy lighting, switching off equipment when not required and keeping the building at an appropriate temperature.”

Gales Farm Meats

As the head of a butchery that has been run by the same family for three generations, and is based on Church View, Stuart Gale is doing all he can to keep his family business going… but he admits it has certainly not been easy:

“Obviously, Christmas was flat out but the trade slows down after Christmas. Although we did find this year, throughout January, that trade remained quite steady and we got a

few new customers from the Christmas trade. It was actually better than the years we’ve had before.

“The public have been really good, and a lot of them understand our situation and have continued to support us. We stayed open throughout Covid and had a good trade, but when people went back to work, people no longer had time to shop in small shops and they went back to supermarkets for convenience. We still get a reasonable trade coming in but people are buying

cheaper cuts in the butchery section, as they’re obviously paying huge bills at home. Everyone’s in the same boat.

“Electricity is my biggest worry. We were previously paying about £8,000 a year for electricity. And our suppliers estimated our annual costs rising to £24,476.58, which was a massive increase. We average 35% mark-up on goods, and that would have meant I had to sell about £23,000 worth of goods

“It’s not just energy bills, it’s everything: packaging, ingredients, minimum wage is going up… it’s all an extra expense for a small company to try to make money. I did contemplate packing it all in, because this is just one bill and we’ve also had increases

“One big problem with any trade is employment. There’s a forum online where butchers in Bristol and Bath are advertising jobs, and pre-Christmas there were about 25 businesses trying to get staff but people don’t seem to want the work. It’s plumbers, builders as well. The younger generation don’t seem to want to do a lot of these jobs. The manual jobs are suffering.”

"We have noticed people are keeping old pieces of equipment running for longer."

2010, although the salon has been on Gloucester Road since 1967. However, like so many businesses, this experienced barber has had to work extra hard in recent years in order to cope with the changing face of the high street and the different ways people live and work:

“People don’t come in as often. Before, people used to get their hair cut every four to six weeks, now it’s more like eight to 12 weeks. Plus a lot of people aren’t in the area anymore, many of the staff from the big offices are now primarily working from home, so in Filton alone you’re looking at 50,000 people missing

every day due to working from home.

“My business has halved since Covid. I’ve lost two members of staff so I’m working on my own now. Plus we’ve got the cost of living crisis and the electricity bill has gone through the roof, which I’m still in shock about. I’ve been paying £700 a year, but from April my annual bill will be just over £4,000 and there’s not a lot I can do about it. I can’t turn lights off, I can’t stop using equipment to run a business, so eventually I will have to put prices up which will affect the customers coming in because they can’t afford it

because they’ve got bills going up their end. It’s a big shock at the minute.

“I’ve got to the point of wondering if it is worth staying open. My income isn’t increasing but my bills are.

It’s definitely a struggle at the minute. I’m sure I’ll still be here, people always need their hair cut, but how it will be I don’t know. I always want to be more positive but at the minute I can’t see a way out.”

Tight squeeze, but homes plan gets green light

Planners have given the go-ahead for five houses squeezed into a tiny plot of land in Filton despite access concerns.

Developers now have planning permission to build the four-bedroom houses on a plot in between Charlton Avenue and Charborough Road.

Local residents raised fears that large vehicles, like fire engines, might struggle to access the new houses, given the road leading to the plot will be small and narrow. Council road experts said fire engines could access the site, although parked cars “may be an issue”.

South Gloucestershire Council’s development management committee voted to grant planning permission.

The site was described as “overgrown and unused, save for casual storage of builders’

materials in small ramshackle outbuildings”.

Nick Morley, the applicant, told the committee: “The site is located in a densely populated residential area. The houses are traditionally designed,

with traditional materials and are suitable for the area. The proposal adds to the housing stock in a sustainable location.”

A narrow lane coming off Charlton Avenue, a small cul-desac, will be the main access to the new houses. Residents told the council that they feared their road would see extra pressure on parking and traffic.

Labour Councillor Adam Monk, representing Filton, said: “The biggest concern from residents is around the access. Charlton Avenue is an extremely tight road. Is the parking being proposed sufficient to ensure there isn’t movement of vehicles onto Charlton Avenue?”

One local resident, writing to

the council, added: “There are concerns about the accessibility of this development for large safety vehicles, as the access road is narrow and the space inside the development is relatively small. A fire engine or ambulance may struggle with manoeuvrability, for example, potentially endangering lives.”

The site has been left undeveloped for decades, and was previously used as an orchard and a pony was once kept there. Trees and shrubland on the site have recently been removed. According to council staff, if parked cars obstructed fire engines from getting to the plot of land, firefighters could run hoses along the lane to reach the new houses, if needed.

Martin Crawford, council highways officer, said: “Fire engines can get to and from the site safely.

"Admittedly, there may be an issue with parked cars which restrict fire engines turning in and out.

"That said, a fire engine would be able to park on Charlton Avenue and run its hoses along the lane anyhow.

“But in terms of fire access, that is a building regs issue rather than a highways safety issue.

"We’re happy for the proposal to proceed.”

Planners approve nine-bed HMO for Filton cul-de-sac

Planners have given the green light for a nine-bed house in multiple occupation (HMO) and a two-storey extension to a house in North Bristol. Neighbours raised fears about a loss of privacy and overlooking from the huge shared house, off a quiet cul-de-sac in Filton.

Property developers now have planning permission to build the extension on 54 Gayner Road, off the northern end of Gloucester Road. Councillors on South Gloucestershire Council’s development management committee voted to approve permission on Thursday, March 16.

Concerns from people living nearby included the increased number of residents creating more rubbish, parking pressures and noise late at night. The house is accessed down a narrow lane,

with gardens of neighbouring houses lying visible on either side of the lane.

Anne Minihane, a neighbour, said: “The properties on either side of the lane will be overlooked. Smells will increase from the additional generation of rubbish, as well as light pollution from the additional vehicles

driving up and down the lane.

"Privacy will be lost from the greater number of occupiers travelling up and down the lane and looking into the gardens.

“Gayner Road is a cul-de-sac of family homes. This is an area perfect for a family to make their home and bring up their children, the next generation of South Gloucestershire citizens, paying their council tax and contributing to society. And yet there is a severe shortage of family homes in the area.”

Filton Town Council also objected to the plans, due to the increasing concentration of HMOs in the surrounding area. Most of the extension works have

already been carried out, so the planning application was for retrospective permission.

The developer recently received planning permission to also turn the house next door, 52 Gayner Road, into an eight-bed HMO.

Samuel Andrews, the property developer behind the scheme, said: “I understand that there is discrimination against student HMOs.

"However, an HMO can be used for professionals as well, such as NHS workers, and are much needed currently, especially with the cost of living crisis.

“There was actually a stabbing outside the Bulldog pub last month, where a local medical student was one of the first on scene and helped stem the bleeding of the victim. So students aren’t all bad.”

Police

Police are hoping the public can help them trace an offender who sexually touched a woman in Filton.

The incident happened while the victim was waiting for a bus in Filton Avenue, near the Station Road junction, at about 6.30am on Saturday, February 25.

A man, riding a black e-scooter, approached her and asked the victim a number of questions and made sexualised comments that made her feel uncomfortable. He then assaulted her by sexually touching her.

A police spokesperson said: "He is described as male, mixed race, about 5ft 6ins and had a small moustache.

"He was wearing a black coat

with the hood up, as well as blue jeans and black trainers.

"CCTV enquiries have been carried out and the local neighbourhood team informed.

"The woman did not sustain any physical injuries but has understandably been left shaken and upset by what has happened.

"A PCSO visited the victim

at her home to provide her with support."

Witnesses or anyone who can help police should call 101 and quote ref number 5223045795.

Teething problems anticipated as new minibus service covering Filton set to launch

by BBC LDRS team for Filtonvoice “Things will undoubtedly go wrong” with the new West Link minibus services starting in April, according to the metro mayor. New details about how the minibus services launching across the West of England region were revealed in mid March, just over a fortnight before they start.

Passengers in Filton and other selected areas - see map - will be able to book a West Link minibus via phone, app or a website, to take them from more remote areas to major transport routes.

The services will run 30 bright green minibuses, as part of a £3-million new scheme known as ‘demand responsive transport’.

The new services are the largest of its kind in the country,

having only been run before on a much smaller scale. Dan Norris, the West of England metro mayor, pictured below, admitted that there would be teething

problems as the new services are rolled out over the summer.

Mr Norris said: “Stop-to-stop tailor-made travel is new for everyone. I am really pleased to

see the first West Link bus, which is going into service from April and rolling out thereafter. I hope West Links become a familiar and welcome sight across our region. We will be adding more and more until we reach our first milestone of 30 full-time minibuses planned for later in the year.

“This is a major investment for a key project. And it’s new to us all, so it certainly won’t be plain sailing. Undoubtedly things will go wrong, but we’re ready to learn as we go along. But I’m determined we get on and try something different, because the old solutions to our transport problems are not up to the challenges of the modern world post-pandemic.

“For me, politics is the art

of the possible, delivering both for passengers of today as well as tomorrow. None of this will be easy, or quick, but I’m hugely proud to have secured this major multi-million-pound funding that gives us a unique opportunity to shape our transport future for the better.”

West Link minibuses will include comfortable seats with headrests, wheelchair access, spaces for prams or buggies, and spaces for folding bikes. Eventually, the app and booking phone service will be able to advise passengers about major public transport route timetables.

The services will cover parts of North East Somerset, South Gloucestershire, Bristol and North Somerset, which are currently poorly served by public transport. Many of these places will also soon see traditional subsidised bus routes scrapped, as councils decided not to increase the transport levy for these routes in line with inflation.

Two companies will operate the minibuses, Via and WeDRT.

Passengers will be able to book a seat on a minibus 24 hours in advance, choosing their pick-up and drop-off points. They will be able to pay through the

app, or by card over the phone, or in cash with the driver.

Single fares will cost £2 for adults and £1 for children, for any length of journey.

Concessionary and older person’s bus passess will be accepted.

Initially the services will run Monday to Saturday from 7am to 7pm. But in future this will be expanded to 5.30am to 9.30pm Monday to Saturday, and 9am to 6pm on Sundays. Fares might change in future.

Mr Norris added: “As well as passengers who are willing to try something new, West Link will need more minibus drivers. The national and local shortage of drivers remains a major hurdle. While we are starting to see progress locally, there is still a significant way to go. If you’re wondering about a career change, do get in touch to find out more.

“I’m thrilled that here in the West of England, we’re aiming high and starting to roll out what will become the biggest scheme of its kind in the country. Let’s all pull together and make it the best scheme in the country too. I know we can. So when the time comes, please do join me on West Link. More news will follow soon.”

Let's plant 100 new trees in Filton - councillor

Taking inspiration from similar schemes in others areas of South Glos, Filton Town Councillor Dan Boardman (Green, Conygre Ward), is spearheading a project to see 100 new trees planted around Filton.

The idea came after a number of residents contacted Dan to ask if it would be possible to have some trees planted on Filton Avenue, close to the junction by Screwfix, to help block some of the noise and pollution from traffic on the roads.

And the idea has since snowballed.

“I approached South Glos Council and found they had a plan in progress, and they’re going around the whole of South Glos investigating where they can increase the tree canopy in urban areas,” said Dan. “We’re on the list for next year.”

Dan found that a map existed showing rough locations for some proposed trees in Filton and, after receiving a copy of the map himself, he began to circulate it to residents to see if anyone had suggestions for other places in Filton that would benefit from extra trees and greenery.

“One of the main areas they’re focussing on is Filton Avenue,” says Dan.

Mobile footcare

SERVICES

"The word ‘avenue’ suggests it would be a tree-lined road although currently it isn’t, so it would be nice to make that a true avenue, to make it more of a green space.”

The benefits of having extra trees and greenery in an area have been well researched. Trees provide a cooler environment during hot weather spells, as well as necessary shade. They promote biodiversity for a range of wildlife and birds, and generally create a nicer environment for everyone using the space. Trees also absorb some pollution from cars.

Following the pandemic, there has also been research showing that green spaces and vegetation are good for our mental health and wellbeing.

The new trees will be restricted to South Glos-owned property, such as council

maintained verges, but Dan says there is also some discussion with the town council around planting extra trees in Elm Park and Millennium Green, right.

However, wherever the trees go, the council will first need to carry out surveys to ensure they are not planting on top of facilities such as water pipes or power cables.

It is not yet known which types of trees will be planted, but Dan hopes it will be possible for some of them to be fruit trees, perhaps on the quieter roads.

“There are a few fruit trees in different places in Filton,” he says, “and maybe we can expand the small orchard in Millennium Green. We’re very lucky in Filton to have some really nice green spaces run by the council and volunteers, including the Community Garden, which is always very nice to see.”

Voter ID in polling stations

The government has introduced a requirement for voters to show photo identification (ID) when voting at a polling station at the local elections on Thursday 4 May 2023. For people in Filton, these elections are for South Glos Council and Filton Town Council. Visit https://beta.southglos.gov.uk/voter-id for more information

Photo ID you can use include:

• Passport issued by the UK, any of the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man, a British Overseas Territory, an EEA state or a Commonwealth country

• Driving licence issued by the UK, any of the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man or an EEA state

• Biometric immigration document

• Identity card bearing the Proof of Age Standards Scheme hologram (a PASS card)

• Ministry of Defence Form 90 (Defence Identity Card)

• Blue badge

• National identity card issued by an EEA state

• Older person’s bus pass

• Disabled person’s bus pass

If your photo ID has expired, it will still be accepted as long as the photograph is still a good likeness of you.

If you do not have ID

Voters who do not have an accepted form of ID can apply for a Voter Authority Certificate using the government portal. We recommend that you do this in good time ahead of voter identification first being required in polling stations. The first time this will be asked for will be the local elections on Thursday 4 May 2023. Voters who do not produce a Voter Authority Certificate or valid identification will not be allowed to vote on the polling day.

You can apply for your Voter Authority Certificate online on the GOV.UK’s voter ID application webpage.

You can also apply in person at South Gloucestershire Council. Call 01454 863030 to make an appointment to come into our Badminton Road offices where we can take your photograph and submit your application online for you.

Appointments will be available during normal office hours.

Voting by post and proxy vote

Postal voters will not be affected and will be issued with their postal ballot papers as usual. If you vote by post you do not need to provide ID unless you have lost your postal vote and need to be issued with a new one. If you choose to vote by proxy, then the person who you have trusted to vote on your behalf will have to take their own identification in order to be issued with a ballot paper.

Please note: the leisure centre demolition works will NOT affect our warm space

Slava Ukraini! I was so moved by visit to war-torn town

Just recently, I stood in the destroyed town of Irpin in Ukraine surrounded by homes similar to the ones we live in and the same cars that we drive. All that was left behind by the people fleeing for their lives were discarded shoes, clothes and a few wrecked vehicles. I saw the complete annihilation of a community.

On the outskirts of Irpin I saw what the local Ukrainians referred to as “The Cemetery of Burnt Cars”, where families had loaded up what they could to escape the advancing Russian forces, but they didn’t make it out. The Russians fired on them and killed all trying to escape. This is taking place, on the continent of Europe, in a Parliamentary democracy. The people of Ukraine are fighting for their lives and their freedom.

Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, I have asked several Parliamentary questions, spoken

in debates and hosted Ukrainian Members of Parliament at Westminster. Within a few weeks of the invasion I asked the Deputy Prime Minister about the UK supplying Starstreak anti-

air missiles to destroy Russian fighter jets in the air. Just a couple of weeks ago, I asked the Prime Minister at PMQs to thank and pay tribute to the people who are working at MOD Abbey Wood who are providing the logistical support and procuring weapons to send to Ukraine so they can kick the Russians out and defend their country.

I felt incredibly moved to be in Kyiv for the one year anniversary of the invasion where I was able to place a candle at the Wall of Heroes.

Since the conflict started, the government has committed over £3.8 billion in humanitarian,

economic and military assistance to Ukraine. The new revised Integrated Review has pledged to increase defence spending by a further £5bn over the next 2 years, on top of the £560 million of new investment last year and on top of the record £20 billion uplift announced in 2020.

I founded and Chair an All Party Parliamentary Group on Sovereign Defence Manufacturing Capability where I recently began an inquiry on the impact of the Ukrainian war on the resilience of our defence industrial capability, our capacity to keep producing weapons for Ukraine and replenishing our supplies.

I will continue to work with Defence Ministers, defence manufacturers, the team at DE&S Abbey Wood to ensure that the Ukrainians get the equipment they need as quickly as possible as they defend our universal values of democracy, freedom and an international rules-based order.

Slava Ukraini!

As always, should you need my help with anything, my office is open from Monday to Friday between 9am and 6pm. Please telephone me on 01454 617783 or email me at: jack.lopresti. mp@parliament.uk if I can be of assistance or to book a surgery appointment.

One giant £136k leap for Filton's space industry

Metro Mayor Dan Norris has secured funding to boost the growing West of England space industry.

The West of England Mayoral Combined Authority has secured £136,000 from the UK Space Agency to fund work on Space West - the region’s “space cluster” - while the cash boost will double the 1,000 people working in the region's space industry in just four years.

Mayor Norris made the announcement ahead of opening the UK Space Agency’s Ignite Space forum at Aerospace Bristol in Filton in March, attended by over 300 of the UK’s best and brightest space thinkers and companies.

There are more than 100 top notch West of England organisations involved in space activities right across the region like the University of Bath, and

Bristol’s Thales Alenia Space who have built satellite technology used in important space missions like the European Space Agency's ‘Copernicus’ to track the health of the planet.

Meanwhile the National Composite Centre in Emerson

Green acts as a base for scientists, researchers and businesses to work collaboratively across labs and offices.

Mr Norris added: “The West of England space sector is a success story. From the

Community hub's future plans in question

Families using a community hub that’s been supporting people in Horfield and Lockleaze for 25 years say it could be “broken” by council plans to redevelop the area.

Bristol City Council wants to demolish the old Cameron Centre and former police station next door, and replace them with a new community space, and 37 affordable homes.

But Lockleaze Neighbourhood Trust (LNT), which uses the centre to provide services for local families, many on low incomes, says the move has come as a surprise.

Chief Executive Suzanne Wilson says the proposal could scupper their plans for the future, and she has called on BCC to work alongside the Trust on the project. She said: “The council plans have been sprung on us. They are planning to build on land where we have been for 25 years, without talking to us.”

The Trust runs a community hub in Gainsborough Square, offering families help with fuel bills, working with food banks, a Warm and Welcome Space, and a pop up café.

It uses Cameron House for a library, and community activities including faith groups, family activities and the Trust earns an income from rentals.

LNT says it need 450sq m of space to house the nursery, and community space to rent – but the new plan only has just over 300sq m of community space.

The Trust employs 13 staff and has dozens of loyal volunteers.

Bristol City Council say the plans take into account public feedback from a consultation exercise in 2021. They say the development will consist of 37 one, two and three-bedroom flats available for social rent, and a community space, plus parking for 40 cars.

Councillor Tom Renhard, Cabinet Member for Homes and Housing Delivery, said the development was part of the city’s plan to build more council homes to meet the growing local need.

He said Lockleaze Neighbourhood Trust will be able to apply for a Community Asset Transfer as the preferred bidder.

You’re not the only victim if you buy a fake

AS the national lead PCC for Economic and Cybercrime, I’m always supportive when I see a national campaign highlighting the impact that fraud can have on communities and how we can work together to stop this criminal activity.

This is why I was delighted to see that the charity Crimestoppers has launched a year-long national campaign to raise awareness about the personal dangers and harms that consumers face when they knowingly or unknowingly buy fake goods.

Causing a £9 billion annual loss to the UK economy, counterfeit goods fraud can be defined as the sale of fake items as authentic goods from established brands.

The criminals behind this crime intend to deceive and exploit consumers into buying fake products, thinking they’ve bagged themselves a bargain. It’s worth stressing that those individuals who deliberately buy a fake product

are also committing a crime and contributing to the problem.

There’s always a victim when you buy a fake product: fake goods cause 80,500 UK job losses every year and the crime has links to organised crime groups who are complicit in human trafficking, child sexual exploitation and prostitution.

While criminals are becoming more skilful at finding new ways of ripping people off, there are a few signs to look out for to protect yourself when you’re looking for a good deal.

These include: the price being too good to be true; dodgy websites and an unusual place of sale; spelling and grammatical errors on websites and product packaging; differences in product or packaging; and missing information like the batch number.

I’m urging local people to report any information they have in relation to counterfeit fraud using Crimestoppers’ anonymous

reporting service, which can be found online or by calling 0800 555 111.

Dog theft is a wide concern for pet owners in our force area.

Last month, to mark National Dog Theft Awareness Day, my team spoke to Avon & Somerset Police’s Animal Welfare Legislation Officer, PC Natalie Cosgrove.

She told us that the force recorded 16 cases of dog theft in 2021 and only five in 2022. While a reduction and, I’m sure reassuring to many, that is still five cases too many.

If you are a dog owner, there are specific security precautions you can take to make dog theft harder, including camera doorbells, keeping doors locked and sensor lighting outside your house.

I would also like to remind those who have a dog to not leave it unattended in your car, your garden, or tied up outside shops.

Remember, microchipping is not only a legal requirement,

With Police and Crime Commissioner Mark Shelford

it means your dog will be much easier to track down if it is stolen.

I also urge dog owners to consider DNA tracking to help identify their dog if it is stolen then recovered by the police. More information on DNA tracking can be found on the ‘DNA Protected’ website.

If your dog has been stolen, you should immediately contact the police and report the crime as theft.

150 years of the chocolate Easter egg

THE West of England Combined Authority is trying something new.

WHAT’S your favourite chocolate treat? A Mars Bar? A KitKat? An Aero, or perhaps a Fry’s Chocolate Mint Creme?

The Big Choices public meetings I held last summer with residents talking all things buses showed me that the status quo doesn’t work. People want change.

As winter turns to spring, it’s not just budding daffodils that are appearing. No, it’s Easter eggs showing up in all good West of England shops, too!

It’s one reason why I’m introducing WESTlink, the brand-new stop-to-stop minibus service offering tailor-made journeys for locals.

I love seeing Easter eggs displayed every year, because we live in the place where the hollow chocolate egg was invented.

reach the first milestone of 30 full-time minibuses.

make chocolate by mixing cocoa fat with cocoa powder and sugar. This made a super-smooth paste, which could be poured into egg moulds.

It is all thanks to a £3 million investment my West of England Combined Authority is making.

These new eggs were just as tasty but lighter than solid continental eggs, which made them easier to afford.

This is a big moment for the West of England, and our local transport journey.

Similar schemes have been trialled in other areas of the country, but never on such a scale. This scheme will grow to become the biggest in the UK.

People couldn’t get enough of these new egg-shaped chocolate treats, and it wasn’t long before they were selling all over the world.

And this year there’s an eggs-tra reason to celebrate - because it was exactly 150 years ago that it happened.

The first passengers will be able to book a WESTlink from their local bus stop from April - dropping them off at another bus or train stop to continue their onward journey. WESTlink will continue to fully roll out over successive months.

It comes hot on the heels of my decision to bring forward a £7 million package of big bus improvements, including adding more main route buses to areas where WESTlink is arriving.

the best way to make your onward journey, whereas in the future you will be able to do that all in the app.

lead the anti-slavery movement, it is also correct to say that not every Quaker held this view, particularly in America.

I saw the first WESTlink a few weeks ago. The bright green minibus, which was taking part in testing, is one of what will eventually be a new 30-strong fleet that residents in the West of England will be able to book by phone, online or with a dedicated app.

That bus will be ready from April, with more WESTlinks to follow until we

When I nipped to the local shops on my travels last week and got chatting to staff busy putting a huge range of eggs on shelves, I told them that Fry’s chocolate makers - who started out in Bristol but later moved their factory to Somerdale, Keynsham, having merged with Cadbury - came up with the idea of the hollow chocolate egg.

The Fry family’s innovation was to

I love it when something that starts out as a new idea in our great region goes global - now as well as back in 1873. It’s a tradition we need to keep going!

In acknowledging our local history of chocolate manufacturing in the 18th and 19th centuries, we also need to recognise its ugly side, for sugar and cocoa grown on Caribbean plantations exploited and abused people of African descent, who were forced into slave labour.

Now, I’ll be frank with you – it certainly won’t be plain sailing at the start.

We’re over a dozen drivers short at present. And there are other things we need to iron out to ensure people get to the places they need to go to as easily and efficiently as possible.

In the first instance, you will need to consult a bus or train timetable to check

While it is true that Quakers in the UK, like the Fry and Cadbury families, helped

But I’m determined we get on with trying something innovative and something different, so I need your help.

Despite the closure of the Fry’s/ Cadbury factory at Keynsham just over a decade ago, our region is today home to many, many independent chocolate makers - using creative talent and ethical practices including Fairtrade chocolate.

Please play your part by trying WESTlink yourself. Tell me how it needs to change and improve. By doing so, together we can grasp this fantastic opportunity to shape our transport future for the better.

Turn to Pages 10 and 11

The commitment from chocolate companies to learn from the past actions, both good and bad, of their predecessors is encouraging and very important.

Community Garden 10th anniversary

So much going on as garden marks 10 years

We can’t believe that 10 years have gone by since we officially opened the garden on 14 July 2013. So much has happened over the years as it has grown from a rather lost corner of Elm Park into a cherished space used and enjoyed by all quarters of the community.

To celebrate the 10 years we have some exciting projects in store for visitors to the garden:

Fairyland:

The fairy tree is being smartened up with a new letterbox and a call out for more ornaments to replace the broken and shabby ones. Fairy doors recently made by Filton big and little people have already been put up surrounding trees. We are planning more ‘Fairy Workshops’ so look out for these!

Encouraging Biodiversity: Dovetailing with the Filton Pollinator Project we are extending the variety of pollinator planting in sunny and shady spots and will be making a bog area, building a new bug hotel and adding more hedgehog homes.

Garden history:

Gathering photographs and memories to be published in a book. Please contribute your photos to our Flickr, Instagram and Facebook accounts with captions using #filtoncommunitygarden .

At the Hidden Heroes event on 15 April you can add your memories to our ‘visitors book’ and also message them to us on

Facebook and email - see all links below.

Mural:

With the conversion of the tennis courts to a MUGA (multi use games area), we will be moving and revamping the mural onto the garden facing side. You can get involved in the design of this - so watch out for that!

Decorations:

With help from the local primary schools and girl guiding we are looking forward to some wonderful displays on the fence and artwork in the flowerbeds.

Summer Fete Celebration: Put Sunday 25 June in your diaries for the usual fun packed afternoon with a few extras!!

Lantern parade:

In the Autumn as evenings shorten again we will make lanterns and have a colourful parade. Keep an eye out for workshop/parade details.

For your diaries these we have dates for others to follow:

● RHS Big Seed Sow/Swap1 April

Community Garden 10th anniversary

Filton is going to be buzzing!

We often close our ears to the scariness of climate change and the adverse effects human activities like pollution, urbanisation, poor land and river management have on our health.

It’s easy to think it’s just inevitable and there’s nothing we can do about it. But don’t lose heart, there are measures we can take even here in Filton to improve the balance of the natural world around us.

A group of UWE Bristol students together with FACE charity and Filton Community Garden are working to bring you some understanding and some great ideas on what you can do to help pollinators.

Locally they will be talking with the primary schools, leading nature walks and workshops, improving the habitat for

pollinators and increasing the indigenous plant coverage. Look out for a leaflet they are creating which will be in a future Filton Voice issue. It will give tips

on what you can do in your own outdoor spaces, be they large or small, to attract more bees, more butterflies and other very helpful pollinators.

Meet the students who are studying MSc Sustainable Development in Practice. You will be hearing more from them and hopefully meeting in person over the next few months:

Adedayo: “I am thrilled to be part of this project in saving nature for our common benefit.”

Debby: “I am excited to talk with Filton people about the pollinators and their importance to us”

Olubukola: “This timely project raises awareness on the need to take action now for the future of our environment.”

Kelvin: “I have a big heart for nature and I will love to assist in improving the biodiversity in Filton.”

Local woodland teams looking forward to the future

Splatts Abbey Wood Conservation Group, which helps maintain the historic woodland based between the MoD and Cheswick Village along with South Glos Council, is planning new work projects and developing existing partnerships.

Long term local community committee members David Bell, Andy Ward, Fred Hillberg, Jenny James and Isabelle Plmmer serve on the committee helping to preserve and maintain it for the local community. These community committee members help to provide a vital community voice in the preservation and development of the woodland.

They said: "Splatts Abbey Wood is an historic woodland. It is all that remains of a once much larger estate and is beautifully preserved for your enjoyment by a band of dedicated volunteers made up of local members from the community and dedicated members of the UWE Green spaces team whose input is massively appreciated and without whom much of the larger projects and ongoing maintenance at the woodland would not take place. So if you haven’t paid Splatts Abbey Wood a visit, why not take the time to do so. A massive thank you to all the volunteers who help with the woodland throughout the year."

Recently UWE student volunteers have planted a new bog garden at Splatts Abbey Wood, a wonderful new feature for the woodland.

Student Project Leaders John Hoyos, Tom Day, Will Bearne, Stefan Bigsby said on behalf of the student volunteers: "We students at UWE are very lucky to have two woodlands near Frenchay Campus, Splatts Abbey Wood, which is the woodland we maintain the most, and also Sims Hill.

"These workdays are a perfect opportunity for students to get to know other

students, create networks and long-lasting friendships as well allowing us to relax from the sometimes-stressful coursework at uni."

The Splatts Abbey Wood Conservation Group has developed many productive partnerships with other organisations - South Glos Council; UWE student volunteers and the Students' Union at UWE; and its sister woodland Sims Hill Community Woodland.

Faith Terry-Doyle, Sustainability Coordinator at The Students’ Union at UWE, said: ”It’s been brilliant to work with Splatts Abbey Wood, Sims Hill Woodland Committee and South Gloucestershire Council to run our Greenspace conservation volunteering programme for interested students from UWE Bristol. This programme has gone from strength to strength. We have already had sessions this academic year, and eight UWE students are now Greenspace Project Leaders.”

Splatts Abbey Wood Conservation group can be contacted at splattsabw@gmail.com

Jenny James, in charge of the Splatts Woodland social media, encourages people to follow and share its social media.

She said: "Please Follow us on Facebook (Splatts Abbey Wood Conservation Group) and Twitter (@SplattsG) for the latest updates and to get involved."

Nicola Rivett from Sims Hill Community Woodland group said: "Sims Hill Community Woodland Group, including new members from Stoke Gifford Retirement Village, were recently joined by the UWE Student Greenspace Group for a tour and practical task. The wood is behind Bristol Business Park and the Scholars Chase development."

To find out more about the group and get involved in managing Sims Hill Wood join our public Facebook page (search on Facebook for Sims Hill Community Woodland) or email simshillcw@gmail.com.
