Today we welcome Ryhope CW to Bedford Terrace, making the short journey down the A19 in what promises to be a very interesting day in the FA vase. Gary Pearson is one of the league’s genuine managers and will have his team well drilled for today’s encounter.

I know he has had a topsey-turvey start in the League 1 but Gary will be fine come the end of season and I wish them well for the remainder of this season.

Our last home against Alnwick Town in the league was never going to be the same result as the cup game when we played them two weeks prior. Obviously, this time round they had a point to prove and on the day to be fair and made us work hard for the three points.

The game was a scrappy game one but as we keep explaining to the players, patience is the key and on the day that was certainly the case and the result came through in the end.

The week building up to Team north away we had the players in for training twice and both sessions were excellent, we also explained to the players that rotation is now key to keeping everyone fresh and if there is one thing that pleases me most at present, is that they all see the understanding of rotation and how well it works.

I would like to mention our reserve manager and his coaching staff who are now settling in at the club. Myself and Paul speak virtually everyday on football matters like myself and Graham do.

The reserves are now in two semi-finals which is fantastic for him, the lads and the club as a whole.

Once I knew Paul had got everyone in place that he wanted in, things would take off and while people raised an eyebrow, I never though twice. As soon as Paul agreed to come on board I knew with his work ethic and our shared ambition, it wouldn’t be long before he would be bringing success to Town. Paul will be a massive part in what myself and Graham aim to do here.

On a pleasing note I would like to wish Craig Hutchinson good luck on his two week trial with Hartlepool united. Craig fully deserves this for his performances this season and if anyone deserves a crack at been a pro Craig does. His attitude is second to none and is a great guy too.

Team Northumbria is always a very tough place to go for anyone and the weather conditions on the day were awful so to see our fans turn up again in force, is a credit to them.

If I’m honest I don’t think any team in our division could of lived with us last Saturday, to be 3-1 up at half time was no fluke, in fact it was fully deserved and could of been more.

The 3-2 final result was a little unjust to be honest, if we had took all our chances it could of been their biggest defeat in a long time and even their manager gave us the compliment any manger wants to hear to say that we are the best team they have played all season and I admire that in any manager.

Well nearly time to go for another round in the vase and if we can gain a victory today and repeat a day like we did at Ashton town, it will be some day. It’s days like today when this club shows what we are all about. Proper footie fans who come together on days like this and support their team. Never in my time have I come across fans like we have at Town and it’s my job along with Graham and the players to give you all the credit you deserve for following us. I hope you all have a fantastic day and we give you something to shout about. Lets have them banners and scarves out and a trip out, this is your ground. Be loud be proud

CLUB HISTORY

clubhistory BILLINGHAM TOWN was originally known as Billlingham Social Club and was founded in 1967 by Tom Donnelly and Robbie Cushley. Tom, who played in Town’s first game back in 1968, has been secretary of Billingham Town since its conception until 2000 when he relinquished this post to become chairman of the club and subsequently is now life president.

In 1968 Town joined the Second Division of the Stockton & District League and won the league title at the first attempt, playing at Mill Lane and the legendary slope – the top of the corner flag was level with the crossbar. Town stayed in the Stockton League until 1973 and won the Division A League title three times and the League Cup twice and also winning the Stockton Charity Cup twice.

In 1974 Town were admitted into the Teesside League and remained members for eight years.

During this time they won the League twice (197879 and 1981-82) and were runners-up once. In 1975 they were beaten finalists in the Durham Amateur Cup Final, but won the competition in 1976 and 1982.

In 1982 the club took the golden opportunity of joining the newly formed Second Division of the Dryboroughs Northern League and changed its name to Billingham Town. After three years in the Second Division Town gained promotion into the First Division but were immediately relegated back to the Second Division in 1986. However, they bounced straight back in 1987 and lost to neighbours Synthonia in the final of the Durham Challenge Cup a year later. Another relegation followed in 1991-92, but they regained their place in the top flight in 1997-98 and have remained there since. @billinghamtownfc

After being runners-up in the Durham Challenge Cup in 1988-89 and 2001-02 Town eventually won the cup in season 2003-04 when manager Alan Robinson led them to a 3-1 victory over then UniBond side Bishop Auckland.

Since 1981, ground improvements at the Bedford Terrace ground have resulted in new dressing rooms, a cantilever stand, hard terracing behind one goal, hard terracing and covered accommodation opposite the main stand. A refreshment room and a re-turfed pitch surrounded by an 8ft boundary fence around 5.5. acres of land.

Bedford Terrace is now recognised as having one of the more attractive grounds in the NorthEast. Floodlights were installed in the 1992-93 season with the official switch-on match against Middlesbrough F.C. After sever gales blew down one of the pylons, Town installed new floodlights in 2003.

In the summer of 2007 Hartlepool United invested in Bedford Terrace and completely re-laid the football pitch to a depth of several feet and installed new drainage. The new pitch measurements and now exactly the same measurements of Pool’s Victoria Park. Also behind the scenes there has been a total facelift with new showers and central heating being put in the dressing rooms. Hartlepool now play the majority of their home Reserve games at Bedford Terrace.

Last season saw the arrival of Manager Barry Oliver and assistant Graham Popple whom have brought stability to the club and managed a respectable finish in the 2015/16 season. Looking forward the club has a new focus and a bright future with a forward thinking management team who play football the right way.

Welcome to Bedford Terrace for today’s game against Ryhope CW in the FA Vase.

What a result last weekend was for everyone at the club going to Team Northumbria who sat top of the league with a great home record scoring goals and conceding very little so we knew it would be a tough game. The confidence was high before the game throughout the team and why not, our form at the minute is brilliant! The conditions could be one of the coldest I have played football in with the rain and hail stones coming down during the warm up and the icy wind going straight down the pitch, and it didn’t let up for the first half. We conceded early on in the game from a penalty but the lads showed brilliant togetherness to get three before half time with some brilliant build up play for our second goal of the game. The half time team talk was a very strange one with everyone trying to dry their tops under the hand dryers and keeping moving because we were all that cold.

Baz got talking with a few minutes to go before we went back out and we didn’t disappoint coming away with all 3 points. Shout out to our keeper Tom who pulled off three great saves in a row to keep it 3-2. We are really starting to show other teams what we are building at this club and hopefully we can all keep pushing forward to where we want to be come Christmas. Another great following from the town fans who were as loud as ever even in the cold wintery conditions.

Today we play Ryhope CW where I spent a season and a half before joining Town last November. Absolutely gutted that I am banned for today’s game with it being such a big one for the club but I will be there with the fans supporting the lads out there on the pitch. We are really building as a group of lads now and it’s great to see that everyone out there isn’t just playing for themselves, they are playing for their team mates and this amazing club.

CLUBHOUSE REVAMP

Our clubhouse has been given a revamp since our last match with new carpets and flooring fitted throughout and a big screen and sound system fitted for televised games.

A massive thank you to Peter English Flooring for supplying the flooring for the clubhouse, especially to Peter, Danny and Stuart who spent all day fitting the flooring. A big thank you to John Connor who spent a couple of days down the clubhouse stripping it and repainting along with myself, Neil, Sarah and Linda. Chris Winn has supplied all the new sound system etc. and along with Rob Fenby they installed it last Sunday.

Without the help of our volunteers the club would flounder, if you have any skills or a few hours during the week that you can give, please feel free to help out.

Played with Jack Connor and Daniel Maloney at Grangetown Boys Club. Spent last season at Darlington Road for West Auckland Town and joined Town during the summer.

Mark Dixon 23 Left Back Productive first season with Billingham Town and was in excellent form before season curtailed by an ankle injury.

Dan Rowbotham 25 Defence Centre half and brother of Josh Rowbotham. Played with his sibling at Synthonia before a short spell with Town. Returned back to Synthonia but decided to sign for Town again in July.

Lee Moore 19 Defence Suffered from an unexplained Liver condition. As a result Bishop Auckland have loaned out the full back for three months to improve his fitness and to gain valuable game time. Former Sunderland Academy product and Spennymoor Town first team member. Already shown his quality in a handful of matches.

Gary Redman 24 Defence/ Midfield Utility player and a fans favourite.

Spent most of last season at right back and can also play in central midfield or out on the wing.

Jamie Davis 28 Midfield/ Forward Attacking midfielder. Played for Billingham Town when he was a teenager in Northern League Division One. Wearside League football with Hartlepool FC and Seaham Red Star Reserves before returning to Town last season.

Bradlee Popple 18 Midfield/ Forward Son of Assistant Manager, Graham Popple. Only eighteen but played a handful of games last season. Another pacy winger who recently turned out for the reserves. As with Marcus Allen, another youngster, Popple will be looking to get game time with Paul Beddow’s squad.

Craig Hutchinson 22 Forward Diminutive but technically gifted striker and Towns top scorer last season. A real find from Hartlepool FC in the Wearside League.

Christopher Dickinson 21 Forward Professional career with York City and at Annan Athletic in Scotland.

Previously with Darlington, Leeds United and Middlesbrough Academies. Last season had spells with West Auckland Town, Billingham Town and Billingham Synthonia. Returned back to Town in the summer.

Daniel Lambert 22 Striker Excellent pre season signing and already prolific in friendlies.

Played for Darlington in the Conference and then moved on to Spennymoor, Marske, Newton Aycliffe and Bishop Auckland.

Elliott Beddow 19 Forward Son of Reserves Manager Paul Beddow. High hopes expected from the youngster after scoring his first goal for the club against Thornaby. Quick, and excellent at holding up the ball. Competition for Craig Hutchinson and Chris Dickinson. Spent majority of last season with Hartlepool FC Reserves.

RESERVE TEAM MANAGER

reserve team manager This is a big day for both the First Team and the Reserves. The 1st team march on the FA Vase whilst we entertain Evenwood Town in the Durham Minor County Cup with both teams playing at home. I hope this turns out to be another great day for the club and we are all celebrating in the clubhouse afterwards.

The Reserves find themselves on a run of four unbeaten games. Last week we reached our second semi-final of the season, having beaten Yarm St Marys 2-1 away from home in the

Lou Moore Trophy. The Ressies have already reached a semi-final in the League Cup where we will face Boro Rangers and we have been given a home draw against Redcar Town in the other semi-final.

This is a great start for The Ressies in their first season and we have two more cup competitions coming up. The County Cup today holds fond memories as we are the current champions having won it last season against Wear Valley from the Crook and District League. We host Evenwood Town from the same league today and we hope to progress. We have made another significant signing in Steve “Chappy” Chapman who some of the fans will know as he has played for the First Team previously. He had a great start coming on as sub against Thornaby Dubliners and scored on his debut.

Michael Campbell 22 Goalkeeper A tall rangy goalkeeper, great shot stopper and good distribution. ExHartlepool FC, and spent last season at near neighbours Norton & Stockton Ancients.

Ryan Fenwick 22 Right Back Strong running fullback who likes to get forward, plucked from Sunday League football after impressing the management playing alongside Scott Close.

Sam Dobson 18 Fullback An accomplished defender at such a young age. Sam can play on the left or right of the defence. A popular member of the squad and a hit with the ladies!

Dean Cope 22 Defence Mobile defender who predominantly plays in the centre but can also cover on the right. Signed for the Town first team at the back end of last season and will be looking to push on again.

Scott Close 23 Central Defence Tall, stocky centre-half who is a handful in the air and strong on the ground.

The leader at the back and forms a good partnership with Dean Cope. Previously played for Norton & Stockton Ancients.

Danny Cartwright 23 Defence/Midfield/Attack ‘Carty’ is a useful utility player and can slot in anywhere down the middle of the pitch or even at right back. Tough tackling and takes no prisoners, pops up with a few goals, and they usually prove to be important ones. ExEasington Colliery.

Kyle Alexander 22 Defence/Midfield Kyle is another player who can cover a number of positions, quick and strong he is at home on either the left or right and can play fullback or wide midfield.

Andrew Sullivan 24 Left Back Sully is an energetic fullback who likes to go forward and get crosses in the box. Was at Hartlepool United as a youngster and previous experience with Willington, Easington Colliery and Hartlepool FC. Anth Readman 23 Utility Anth is the ultimate utility man, he has played in every position on the pitch apart from goalkeeper (and he’d give it a good go!). At home out wide or in the fullback positions, a player Paul trusts and knows he can rely on.

Ian Riley 30 Midfield The elder statesman of the squad, Riley provides the calm in the middle of the park and his influence can sometimes be underestimated by the opposi-

tion. Keeps things simple and keeps the ball moving.

Ross Kidson 20 Midfield A midfield powerhouse, Ross is box to box, whether it be in the middle of the park or on either wing his energy and creativity make him a valuable player. Another who has previously played for Wearside League team Hartlepool FC. Aaron Doyle 26 Midfield Doyley is the voice of the team, a competitive central midfielder who can play a bit as well. Great in the air despite his size and strong on the ball. Previously with Leeds United as a kid and has already played for the Town first team as well as Hartlepool FC and Easington Colliery.

Dom Laffin 23 Midfield/Attack Dom is another of the more vocal members of the squad, a real character in the dressing room and a massive influence on the pitch. A talented player who can control midfield or play as a target man. Shares the captaincy responsibilities with Aaron Doyle. Has previous playing experience with Seaton Carew and Hartlepool FC in the Wearside League.

Alex Pyne 17 Midfield Young midfielder who has come in this summer and shown a lot of promise, determined character and a talented ball player. Will be looking to push on into the side and gain valuable experience of senior football.

Scott Stephenson 23 Midfield Stevo can play on either wing and is deceptively quick. Great passer of the ball and will be looking to get back to full fitness and show exactly what he can offer. Another who has previously played for the first team.

Jake Larkin Larko is a bag of tricks, he can be a frustrating player at times but can win games with a piece of magic. Larko is no slouch and his turn of pace complements his skill on the ball.

Overall a very effective attacking player.

Brad Popple 18 Midfield/Attack Brad is a very capable player, loves to have the ball at his feet and make things happen, can play out wide or off the front and will prove a good addition to the squad. Previously played for the first team and in the Wearside League with Murton.

Matty Newbury 21 Striker Matty is a workaholic, he thrives on unsettling defenders and is full of pace and energy, he chips in with his fair share of goals but will be looking to be more consistent in front of goal this coming season.

Carl O’Sullivan 19 Striker Carlo is another front man who never seems to stop running and has pace to burn, creates numerous chances for himself with his work rate but will be looking to head the teams goal scoring this season. A player in demand Carl has played for Ryhope CW, Hartlepool FC and Easington Colliery.

Niall Bradley 29 Striker Niall Is a tall imposing figure and unsettles the opposition just by his size, a rangy forward player who offers a different outlet to the other strikers, also has a knack for being in the right place at the right time.

TODAY’S VISITORS

today’s visitors Ryhope CW The club was founded by the Coal Miners of Ryhope in 1892 but it was not until the 1927–28 season that we won our first Wearside League title. The club enjoyed most of its success in the 1960s, winning the Wearside League on four occasions, the Monkwearmouth Charity Cup twice as well as the Sunderland Shipowners Cup and the League Challenge Cup during the decade.

the first time in 44 years as well as finishing runners up in the Wearside league which was also our highest position in 44 years. However the 2010–11 season was the most successful in the club’s history.

We won all four competitions: the Wearside League Title, Sunderland Shipowners Cup, Monkwearmouth Charity Cup and the League Cup. This was only the third time that any club had ever achieved this feat in the history of the Wearside League.

In the 1967–68 season the team reached the First Round Proper of the FA Cup for the only time in the club’s history losing 1–0 at home to Workington. The next successful season was in 1977–78 when we finished 3rd in the league, winning the League Cup and the Durham Challenge Cup for the only time in our history. Between 1988 and 1992 the club was known as Vaux Ryhope after a merger with Sporting Club Vaux.

Remarkably we repeated the feat again in the 2011–12 season winning all four competitions and gaining promotion to the Northern League for the first time in our history. We ended the season having only been defeated once in the last 70 Wearside League and Cup games.

In the 2009–10 season we won the Monkwearmouth Charity Cup for

In our first season in the Northern League we finished second in Division Two and earned promotion to the first division. However our ground failed the Northern League Inspection and we were demoted back to the Wearside

League after just one season.

2013/2014 we finished second in the Wearside League but we did pass the Northern League’s inspection in March and earned promotion straight back up. In our final game of the season we beat the Wearside League champions Stockton Town 2-0 in the Monkwearmouth Charity Cup Final.

The season saw the club have three managerial departures but now Gary Pearson has been appointed as the new manager as we return to the Northern League.

2014/2015 we finshed in the top half of the 2nd division which allowed us entry into the fa cup for the 1st time in over 40 years..

2015/2016 the club finished runners up in the northern league 2nd division and gained promotion to division one for the 1st in clubs 124 year history

Manager - Gary Pearson At 14 Gary was picked as one of the best 16 players in the Country to join the F.A. School of Excellence for two years and at 16 he signed a three year pro contract with Sheffield United.

Injuries restricted his progress with Sheffield United and he then played for Gateshead, Seaham Red Star and Durham City before at 24, he signed pro forms for Darlington. He played there for three seasons before playing a season for York City. After the pro game Gary played for Durham City, Nissan as player coach, Spennymoor Town and then became player coach at Crook Town at the beginning of 2011/12 season before taking over as manager in December 2011.

When Bradley Groves moved from manager to Chairman of the Lyons at the beginning of 2010/11 season, Gary became joint manager along with Stuart Gooden. After one season winning the League, Gary left leaving Stuart in sole charge so he could concentrate on Saturday football.

When Gary took over at Crook he appointed Stuart as his assistant. In their first full season in charge Crook won Northern League Division 2 with over 100 points and the following season they consolidated Crook in Division 1. At the end of 2013/14 season with a lot of problems behind the scenes, Gary and Stuart felt they had taken Crook as far as they could and resigned wishing Crook every success for the future. After a meeting with Darren Norton the Ryhope CW Chairman, Gary and Stuart realised the ambitions of Darren and Ryhope CW. They had no hesitation of accepting the roles of manager and assistant manager.

MY LOVE OF NON-LEAGUE FOOTBALL

by Tony Incenzo of talkSPORT Radio (twitter: @TonyIncenzo) IN THE BEGINNING I’ve been watching Non-League football on a regular basis since I was 10 years old. What I like most is that the players, club officials and supporters are there for the love of the game. The true spirit of football exists at Non-League level.

I grew up in North-West London and I was taken by my family to see my local club QPR as a child in the 1970’s.

I’ve always supported the R’s, but when they were playing away from home I started going to see my local Non-League clubs – Hendon primarily, but also Finchley, Barnet and Edgware Town.

GROUNDHOPPER From there, I decided to visit every Non-League club in London as my groundhopping bug began. By the time I was 17, I had visited all 92 Football League grounds and I visited all the Scottish League grounds whilst still a teenager.

Since then, I’ve continued travelling all around the country to visit Non-League clubs. Last season, I chalked up my 2,000th ground at FC United of Manchester.

WORLD RECORD One of the best groundhops was being part of a world record in March 2004. I joined 250 other groundhoppers to watch five matches at five different

football grounds in one day in the Central Midlands League.

This is listed in the Guinness Book of Records and we received certificates confirming the world record at the end of the fifth game.

INSIDE PRISON! In December 2011, I set about watching a match inside Feltham Prison in Middlesex.

This featured a team called Phoenix FC, who had to play all their fixtures at home (for obvious reasons!) as inmates of the Young Offender Institution at Feltham.

I received special permission by email to attend a fixture, but I was told not to bring a phone or a camera with me. I was instructed to arrive in the main car park along with the match referee and the visiting players from Hanworth Villa Vets.

We were met by members of the prison staff who escorted us all in together…via an airport-style metal detector, a body search, numerous locked gates and along a path to the changing rooms.

This process took 45 minutes. After the players and ref got changed, we were then accompanied through more locked gates out to the playing area.

A high mesh fence with barbed wire on top surrounded the football pitch. There were dug-outs along one touchline and I watched the match from there as the only spectator.

THE FUTURE I have now been to 2,095 football grounds and have completed visits to the all the grounds in the top 16 divisions of English football down to NonLeague step 4. Then at step 5 I need 23 grounds and another 77 at step 6.

There are endless possibilities at step 7 and below.

Also, I’ve been to 35 European countries plus the USA for football – so it would be nice to visit more countries.

TODAY we extend a very warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Ryhope Colliery Welfare to Bedford Terrace, we hope you enjoy our hospitality and have a safe journey home.

We played Ryhope three weeks ago and know we can expect a tough encounter today. They are currently third bottom of the first division, but as we found out in our last game they are extremely resilient and hard to break down at the back, we threw everything at them on the night, but came away without scoring, hopefully we can put that right today and move into the next round.

Last Saturday at Team Northumbria I witnessed one of the best attacking displays from a Town team for many years. After going down to an early penalty we picked ourselves up and ran Team North ragged, they could not cope with our quick passing football and the pace on the wings kept they defenders pegged back. This is all credit to Barry and his staff who have worked hard behind the scenes in bringing in exciting players who hopefully will take us back up into the first division, if not this season, next for definite.

When I interviewed Barry for the manager’s job I had to make some hard decisions. There were some extremely competent managers who applied for the job, all of them having a lot more experience than Barry. At the time I was also offered a partnership with Darlington, using our team as their stepping

stone for young players to move up and for experienced players to get match fitness.

The managers who applied for the job were all top people who would have done a good job down here at Bedford Terrace, but there was something about Barry that made me take my time, think long and hard about what to do, who to bring in and in the end there was something in the back of my mind that said this candidate has got something different, and he has. He is developing a top class young team that we hope will be here for a few years along with Barry. There are teams knocking on our door for players and for the manager, but hopefully we will be able to hang on to both. A lot of it has to do with you, the spectators who are now creating a great atmosphere, both home and away, keep it up everyone.

Today I am restarting the ‘Man of the Match’ award for a Town player which will be presented to the player directly after the game on the pitch. There will be voting forms for you to fill in for your ‘Man of the Match’. All you need to do is fill in the name and hand it in to the press box at 5.40, this will give us five minutes to sort the forms out before the end of the game.

Enjoy the game and shout the boys into the next round.

Chairman, Secretary, hospitality and general dogs body - Has anyone actually seen him with hair?

Good Afternoon and welcome to Bedford Terrace for what promises to be an exciting encounter in the Buildbase FA Vase.

Initially concerns amongst the many fans was the price of £2, double the price of the previous programme. Producing the new programme is costly, the actual cost is £200 per match, so we print 100 with the hope we can sell them all and break even. The bigger picture is that we can attract local businesses to advertise in it and then pass the funds on to support the clubs overheads. It’s a great opportunity for you to know a little about the players in ‘Players Profile’ and also with ‘around the league’ and the Transfer info, it allows you to keep track of what’s going on in the League.

This is the first editorial I have written for you since becoming Programme Editor at the club and special thanks go to Press officer, Graham Hutchinson who keeps me right and writes so many articles for me.

In the short time I have been here I have learnt so much from the volunteers who give up their spare time to help the club function and together we are all working towards progressing onwards and upwards. There is such a great feeing around the club.

Barry and Pops have got the lads gelled well and playing some great football. But, what really makes this place special is the loud bunch at the back of the stand! You are all daft and make everyone around the place smile.

This is the 4th edition of the brand new full colour programme which thankfully, has been welcomed by the management, staff, players and fans of the club. It was a huge step to introduce a new full colour programme as Peter had done a tremendous job producing the previous one, as well as his duties as

He was probably kissing his slip when Bishop’s took an early lead but a magnificent second half display, playing with ten men for virtually forty minutes, Town beat the odds with a herculean victory!

Town came into this game confident in the knowledge that they had beaten Willington 2.0 in the league just weeks before the game. Town won comfortably 4.2 and Chris Dickinson showed the kind of form that persuaded Barry Oliver to bring him to the club for a second time.

Town knew that in all probability, they would have to play Bishop Auckland in the next round and that proved to be the case after they defeated Bedlington Terriers 3.0

Ashton were bottom of the league with only one league victory since August, but like ourselves had won two rounds to get this far. Town’s superiority shone through, winning comfortably against our hospitable hosts.

The gulf in class between the bottom half of division one and in division two was in evidence on North Tyneside when Ryhope CW defeated an unpredictable Ryton side. Nathan O’Neil was the star of the show, scoring a first half hat-trick in blustery conditions and although Ryton rallied in the second half, the game was effectively over at half time.

The Sunderland club travelled to Greater Manchester to face another step 6 side in Stockport Town. On an artificial surface, Ryhope keeper Jonathan Ball conceded a goal via his legs after Stockport took a free kick. Before half time, Leon Ryan headed home from a corner and then Kyle Davis put Ryhope ahead. Lee Chapman scored the third and final goal after Davis shot was blocked to set up a crunch tie against ourselves.

HATS off to the 39 Eastleigh fans who made the 620mile round trip to Barrow on October 29.

If their 18-hour trek from the south coast to the northeast and back wasn’t gruelling enough, TV chiefs declared they set off from Hampshire at around 3am after the clash of the National League promotion seekers were chosen at BT Sport’s live game, kicking off at 12.30pm.

While I totally understand and applaud the demand, need and importance of television especially when it brings interest and money to the Non-League game - I can’t help but think that the decision to reschedule kick-off times was made without any thought or consideration to the most important people in the whole process…the fans.

That day, the sides lying first and second in the National League, Forest Green Rovers and Dagenham & Redbridge, were locking horns at The New Lawn in, arguably, the game of the season so far.

With a round trip of just under 300 miles - over half the distance - surely televising this top-of-the-table clash would have made more sense? And if it really had to be Barrow v Eastleigh – still a mouthwatering encounter I must add - why couldn’t it be put back to the more preferable 5.30pm slot?

The plight of the Eastleigh fans got me thinking about my own early experiences as a young reporter, covering my two local sides, Aldershot Town and Farnborough Town.

As keen as enthusiastic as I was, I remember being in total awe of those supporters who traipsed the length and breadth of the country every other week supporting their team.

It wasn’t too bad for me. I had a free Press ticket waiting for me at the gate and my expenses were covered upon my turn. But these dedicated diehards gave up their hard-earned time, effort and money for the cause - often for little reward - yet still they would arrive home with smiles on their faces and start planning their next excursion.

Times are hard these days, and with the introduction of twitter, Facebook and club websites, it would be very easy for fans to give their feet and wallets a rest and follow their club’s fortunes in comfort behind a computer screen.

Northern Echo’s Ray Simpson’s view on Northern League Division Two. Billingham Town produced the shock of the day in the second division when they won 3-2 at league leaders Team Northumbria.

The home side took the lead with an early penalty by Ged Richardson, but Stephen Oakley equalised, and before half time Craig Hutchinson scored twice to take his tally for the season to 16.

Dan Taggart pulled a goal back on the hour, but Billingham held on to move just four points behind the promotion places.

Billingham Town manager Barry Oliver said; “It was a fully deserved victory. I thought our passing and movement in the first half was top class at times. They couldn’t contain us. We still had chances in the second half but overall a very good team performance from a group of players who firmly believe in their own ability at this moment in time.”

Second placed Durham City also lost, by 2-1 at Thornaby, the first win for new Thornaby boss Paul Burton.

Thornaby took the lead when Karl Charlton scored from the edge of the box, but Durham levelled though Brad Hird on 56 minutes.

However, Thornaby recovered and got the winner when Lewis Green scored from a left wing cross. It was Durham’s first defeat in five matches, and Thornaby’s first league win since September.

Durham manager Olly Hotchkiss said; “We’re gutted to lose after we dominated the match for 90 minutes ,

I was delighted with the players’ attitudes and performance level. We played very well and deserved more from the game.

We switched off twice and got punished. But I can’t fault my players as they deserved more, but credit to Thornaby they worked hard.”

Thornaby manager Paul Burton said; “It’s great to finally get that first win. We played very well in the first half and scored a good goal through Karl Charlton. Durham came out and played well, they equalised at the start of the second half. Second half Durham came out and played well. They equalised midway through the second half, but the lads settled well and we scored a good second goal. Durham put us under a bit of pressure for the last ten minutes but never really created a clear chance or worked the keeper.”

Stockton Town took advantage of the slips by the others by beating Alnwick 4-1 to go second. Kallaum Hannah scored a hat trick to give him 17 for the season, with Joe Coulthard getting the other. Josh Hay replied late in the game for Alnwick.

Stockton Town manager Micky Dunwell said; “We’re very pleased, it was a good second half performance in which we scored four quality goals. Back to winning ways which is the important thing.”

Billingham Synthonia slipped up at home for the first time this season when they were beaten 1-0 by Whickham, Ross Peareth scoring the winner from the spot late in the game.

Easington are now up to sixth after beating Willington 4-0.

Willington have now dropped into the bottom three because Thornaby have moved above them.

Easington manager Paul Frame said; “It was a good win for us today. We played really well especially in the second half.

It was great to see young Paul Adamson come off the bench and score twice and a solid start from young Jake Fenton.”

Hebburn have now won seven in a row to put them fourth after a Glen Hargrave goal gave them the points against Heaton Stannington.

Hebburn manager Scott Oliver said; “It was a tight game and they just shaded it. Two committed teams in shocking conditions.”

Crook Town couldn’t do much to stop Blyth Town winning 4-0 and going fifth. John Grey, Liam Gillesphey, Malky Morien and Gary Day scored the goals.

The clash of the bottom two between Darlington RA and Esh Winning ended in a draw, which wasn’t much use to either team.

Darlington RA manager Peter Mulcaster said; “It was a totally inept first half performance but second half we were far better and should have won the game.”

Esh Winning manager Tony Boakes said; “It was a good first half. We led at half time, but sat too deep in the second half and got caught with the last touch of the game. We missed

too many chances again and got caught out.”

Esh took the lead through Callum Boakes and paid the penalty for their missed chances when Jamie Kilcran scored in second half stoppage time.

Tow Law drew 1-1 with Northallerton at Ironworks Road.

Liam Whitworth headed Tow Law into the lead, and then the game turned against them in the space of a minute.

First their keeper, Kyle Etherington miscued a Scott Oldfield back pass into his own goal, and then Northallerton keeper James Briggs saved a penalty from Dean Thexton.

Tow Law manager Steve Murray said; “A missed penalty and a comedy own goal for the Xmas gaffes DVD cost us two well deserved points but extends the unbeaten run.”

Northallerton manager Darren Trotter said; “Time will tell whether today was a good point. They were difficult conditions under foot , but we acquitted ourselves very well.

We need to be calmer in front of goal.”

Bedlington’s rise up the table continued with a 4-1 home win over Ryton and Crawcrook. Striker Lee Scott was amongst the goals, giving him 18 for the season, with Liam Clark, Kyle Oliver and Tyler Scarth getting the others. Adam Chrostowski replied for Ryton.

Norton let a 2-1 lead slip against Brandon, and lost 3-2. Phil Caley scored twice for Norton, with Lewis Martin (2) and Joe Calvert replying for Brandon.

Norton manager Deano Browne said; “It was a poor game, the conditions didn’t help. We conceded from a setpiece then did well to get in front. We made two mistakes and gifted Brandon the game.”

Since the win at Ashton Town we have beaten Alnwick at home and followed that with arguably our best league performance of the season, defeating the leaders Team Northumbria. To put that win into context, I highlighted in my preview the previous evening that the students had only conceded four goals at home. In the opening forty five minutes, Town ruined that record with three goals and could have had more before the half time whistle went. The second half was more even but then again, we should have scored two more to make the scoreline more emphatic. It was good to see Stephen Oakley score the equaliser from yet another Chris Dickinson corner routine and it’s a shame Stephen is suspended for this cup tie. To say Stephen has had a truncated season would be an understatement! Three red cards before November would suggest Stephen is a dirty player but he really is a gentle giant! I think even he will admit that his altercation at the end of the Alnwick game was totally out of character and today’s opposition, Ryhope CW will be delighted with his ban. It was nearly a year ago now when Barry brought him to the club from Ryhope CW and it’s fair to say the skipper is Town’s number one centre half so his omission will be a big blow. However, we now have a strong squad with the likes of Dan Rowbotham, Mattie Crossen and Jack Connor can

also play as an emergency centre half. Ryhope CW are struggling in the division above us but the quality on show in division one means Ryhope CW will be considered the favourites to win this game.

Further proof of this was highlighted recently when they knocked us out of the Durham Challenge Cup but observers that night left Sunderland feeling extremely optimistic that Town will gain revenge.

And rightly so! That defeat during half term was only the second loss during our last sixteen games.

The stats are also in our favour! Ryhope CW have never got further than the second round so a victory for them would be a significant achievement. The Ryhope side that left Bedford Terrace last March with a point, was built around a stoic defence but the current squad have leaked goals galore. The caveat though is when they come across teams at our level, they step up a gear, defeating Ryton 5.0 in the Vase and Stockport Town 3.1 in the last round. Having said all that, the draw was kind for us and if we can perform anywhere near to our recent standards then a potential third round journey to the likes of Wolverhampton, Peterborough etc awaits the boys in blue (or yellow). Exciting day, Exciting football and Exciting times for this wonderful club of ours.......

Billingham Town FC 3 Alnwick Town 1 Saturday 29th October 2016 7:30pm KO While today might not have had the magic of last week’s FA Vase win, or indeed the romance of the cup but nevertheless, Town earned a welcome three points against a much improved Alnwick side from the one that exited the EA Trophy so meekly eleven days ago. On Friday night, Assistant manager Graham Popple stated he was expecting a much closer game this time around but Town’s extra quality should be enough and he was right on both counts.

Alnwick were organised and surprisingly more disciplined than the eleven that turned up for the cup game but they still had an element of naivety about their play and it proved to be their undoing.

It’s another measure how far Billingham Town have developed in recent months when they can win like this without playing particularly well. Going in at half time two goals to the good felt a bit like daylight robbery but such is the firepower in this squad that even an under par Town, can still be a dangerous Town! Goals from Jamie Davis, Chris Dickinson and Craig Hutchinson were enough to see off a spirited Alnwick side but the downside of the result was another red card for skipper Stephen Oakley. His third red card of the season means he will miss The FA Vase game against Ryhope CW and could face a five match ban. With Harry Taylor suffering another injury setback that will almost certainly curtail his season and Clayton MacDonald already suspended for the Vase; defensive options now look rather sparse. Danny Rowbotham and Mattie Crossen will probably be the first choice pairing at centre back with the option of Jack Connor reverting back from midfield but his creativity will be required alongside Jamie Davis unless Manager Barry Oliver decides to select Ashley Lavan instead. The Town squad now have an opportunity to rest up and regroup in training with only Team Northumbria to face before the big one!!

The opening exchanges were fairly even with Joshua Hay, who once again looked lively for Alnwick. One such effort took a wicked deflection and Thomas Dawson did well to react. Luke Hogan and @billinghamtownfc

Elliott Beddow weren’t seeing much of the ball out on the wings as Town’s better play came through the middle from Dickinson and Hutchinson. As is often the case with Town, they came to life inside the final ten minutes of the half. A four man move that started with Hogan, then to Hutchinson and a superb through ball by Dickinson set up the onrushing DAVIS to fire home with a sweet left footed shot. Almost immediately, Alnwick should have levelled the scoring. Dominic McMahon’s pump forward evaded Connor which left Liam Brooks with a one on one situation against Dawson but the keeper cleverly took a couple of steps backwards giving Brooks more time to think and in the end the striker shot tamely at Dawson. And on forty three minutes Town punished Alnwick with a second goal when DICKINSON fired home after both Hutchinson and Davis had shots blocked.

by Tony Brown. Although Hutchinson had a couple of efforts on goal, Town hadnt got going in a scrappy second half, not helped by numerous stoppages for both sides. Harry Taylor who had replaced Dickinson could only manage seventeen minutes and needed a stretcher and we can only hope the injury is not too serious. Town dominated the final fifteen minutes and were guilty of overplaying in the final third but on eighty seven minutes, HUTCHINSON put the game to bed with a simple tap in after Hogan’s shot was palmed into the path of Town’s top scorer. With the game won, Stephen Oakley received a second yellow card followed by a red for a touchline altercation. The majority of the crowd were surprised to see a second yellow but by all accounts, Stockton referee Thomas Bainbridge had already issued a yellow in the first half for kicking the ball away. Town managed to see out the remaining time added on but it was a sour ending to an otherwise pleasing victory.

Tow Law Town

When the new season fixtures were announced in June, the first away game we look for is Tow Law to see what time of year the game will take place.

Ironworks road has to be one of the coldest grounds in the country, set high up in the Durham hills and it has been known to be Baltic even in August! Tow Law started the season in good form, denying Town all three points after coming behind from a 2-0 deficit to earn a point on the opening day of the season.

Their form has faltered of late but they did hold Billingham Synthonia to a 2-2 draw recently and Town can expect a tough encounter.

Team Northumbria 2 Billingham Town FC 3 Saturday 5th November 2016 3.00pm KO August Bank Holiday weekend, Town put a marker down when they defeated the then league leaders, Easington Colliery 1.0. Forward to November and Town made a stronger statement of intent with a 3.2 victory at runaway table toppers Team Northumbria. The scoreline flattered the home side and Team North couldn’t have argued if they had gone in at least 4.1 behind at half time. Further chances were created in the second half but the real fireworks took place in the opening forty five minutes. Slick, energetic, and a workrate so intense, it was actually difficult to fully concentrate because of the numerous chances and constant one way traffic towards the students goaline. Sure, Team North faced treacherous conditions that meandered from rain, wind, sleet and the odd snowfall but Town themselves hardly performed in Berghaus all weather gear! After going behind so early against quality opposition, similar to the FA Vase tie at Bishop Auckland, it could of been so easy to have toiled in monsoon like conditions. Manager Barry Oliver and Assistant Graham Popple wouldn’t stand for that though and the Town players were in no mood to disappoint the chosen one! Another morale boosting win and no game in midweek means the Town squad have a perfect build up to next Saturdays FA Vase second round home tie against Ryhope CW. Town were at full strength although Connor Dunlavey continued his rehabilitation with the reserves, playing sixty minutes in their cup win against St Mary’s. Billingham got off to worst possible start after just two minutes when Mark Dixon hauled down Nicholas Green inside the box. Gerrard Richardson found the bottom corner of the goal despite Thomas Dawson guessing the right way. Team North had started the game the better side and Kevin Carr found space @billinghamtownfc

to shoot from ten yards but his rising shot was a good height for Dawson to save. After a quarter of an hour, Town settled down and dominated the rest of the half. The equaliser came from a powerful OAKLEY header and three minutes later Town took a deserved lead. Jack Connor played a sublime through ball for HUTCHINSON to score from an acute angle.

By this time the heavens opened and Team North could only pray for a devine intervention in stopping a rampant Town.

And Town went further ahead on twenty five minutes when HUTCHINSON deflected shot wrong footed Sean Minto, Team North’s goalkeeper. Luke Hogan, who had an assist to his name for the third goal was giving Green a torrid time and the full back was duly booked for constant fouling.

Connor was through on goal on the left side and decided to square the ball for Hutchinson but the ball ran behind the striker. Hutchinson had another sighter inside the box after Oakley’s knock down but his effort deflected wide. Team North, who had virtually created nothing since the penalty pulled a goal back on fifty nine minutes. Aiden Heywood flighted ball into the danger area was skillfully headed home

by Daniel Taggart, leaving Dawson stranded on his goaline.

Chances were few and far between but Team North tried to put Town under pressure. Heywood’s shot flashed wide and into injury time, Dawson superbly denied Carr when free on goal and Dawson saved the follow up for good measure! As the interminable injury time continued, Dickinson played a delicate lob over Ross McKeown to free Hutchinson and the on form striker looked certain to score but he caught the ball too well, enabling Minto to push the ball over the crossbar.

When the final whistle went, the strong away following gave the players and staff a well deserved guard of honour.....

Perfect preparation for next week’s blockbuster Vase game!
