successful against a higher standard of opposition, the Championship was brought back to Cannon Park, and a Central Midlands League Cup Semi Final was also achieved under the guidance of former Everton and Manchester City player Neil Pointon.

RETFORD UNITED FC The History of the Badgers Formed in 1987 by local man Brian Jackson, Retford United began life in the Gainsborough & District Football League Division Two before moving to the Nottinghamshire Football Alliance Division Two the following season. Seven years later, promotion was gained to the Nottinghamshire Football Alliance Division One where they continued to play for two years until another promotion to the Nottinghamshire Football Alliance Senior Division.

Jackson’s hard work and determination secured a site on Leverton Road, Cannon Park, and he built up the clubhouse, and pitch from nothing, a legacy that will live long for years to come. A struggle to stay in this division, Retford United were eventually relegated in 2000, but a new regime and a more focused outlook gave Retford United the springboard that they needed with the acquisition of their current ground at Cannon Park, a short walk from the town and financial input from local businessman.

2000/01 Season saw the Badgers storm the division, winning the championship and the Nottinghamshire Intermediate Cup against Matrixgrade at Eastwood Towns ground. They left the Nottinghamshire League that season and moved into the Footballing Pyramid with the Central Midlands Football League.

A consolidation period in 2002/03 as United played in the Central Midlands Supreme League, losing out after a fixture backlog at the end of the season, they finished a respectable 3rd, but the following season was one of the biggest years in the clubs history, breaking records at both club and league level. Under the guidance of Paul Hyde, in 2003/04 Retford United were crowned Central Midlands Football League Supreme Division Champions, promotion to the Northern Counties Football League was granted, but to go with this, for the first time in history the treble was achieved as United were winners of the League Cup and Floodlit Cup. This still remains an unprecedented feat. The team were a force to be reckoned with, and an appearance in the Notts Senior Cup Semi Final was the furthest the club had reached in this competition, losing out after extra time to Hucknall Town, who would go on to win the Unibond League Premier Division that season.

A much higher standard of football was then expected in the Northern Counties East League Division One, and United took the challenge finishing 8th in their first season, ex player Mark Shaw took charge for the 2005/06 season, and with a blend of experience and youth, completed the double - NCEL Division One Runners Up, (and promotion to the Premier division) and winners of the Wilkinson Sword Trophy. Another history making season in 2006/07 as yet again, the club were rewarded with the Double, this time winning

the NCEL Premier Division title, Promotion to the Unibond League and lifting the Presidents Cup. During the season, United had their first International cap - Neil Harvey playing, and scoring in a three game tournament for Barbados in the Caribbean Cup, and the best ever run in the FA Vase with the fifth round being reached, losing out to Leamington FC. In 2007/08 under the guidance of Peter Duffield, the club won the UniBond League Division One South Championship by a massive thirteen points, gaining 99 points in total. Added to that was the Chairmans Cup, in a North v South challenge against Bradford Park Avenue where United ran out 2-0 winners. United had a strong run in the FA Trophy, before going out at the First Round stage at Histon FC, but they did win “Team of the Round” for their performance in an earlier round.Disappointment however in a tough season off the field as, among other things, promotion to the Premier Division was not allowed due to the ground not being up to standard.

Since 2010 the club has had mixed fortunes, and in 2011-12 Season they marked a fantastic season by becoming Champions of the NCEL Premier Division. Because of financial constraints, the club decided to continue in the NCEL rather than accept promotion, and have had mixed fortune since. 4th in 2013, 9th in 2014, and 20th in 2015.

Last season the club finished in 15th place after Chris Sellars came in towards the back end of the season and saved them from what seemed certain relegation. Chris was replaced at the start of this season

by Chairman Wayne Radford and replaced by Darren Giovannetti and Brian Entwistle. The club has had a mixed bag this season, after losing out in the FA Cup to newcomers Leicester Road FC

A great day for the club with the travelling fans, and our supporters making it a large hostile atmosphere. The result wasn’t the outcome we wanted or needed. We had great preparations leading up to kick off time.

I got the lads in at 12.30 for pre-match tea and toast whilst watching the first half of the chelsea v Arsenal game. We had a good chat of what I expected and how we were going to approach the game. The warm up was excellent with high intensity. I really thought it would have carried on to the match but unfortunately it

didn’t. Worksop started the better putting pressure on our back four, resulting in them taking the lead. From the start the lads looked nervous. Sometimes I have to remember that we are a young side with many 18 year olds with not much big game experience, and I shouldn’t be so hard on them which I am trying to address. The second half, as normal, our performance improved. Again in the last twenty minutes we created three good opportunities which, again, we failed to score . It seems the same story every game.

One game we will score a bag full. At the moment no team we have played has been more superior than us. It’s just that bit of quality, which at the moment, we lack .

Todays game is massive for our survival. I do believe we have enough to stay up, we just need the results to reflect how far we have come as a club since I took over, and bringing on the young players, progression is important, but results are what I will be judged on. Together with you, the supporters, we can do it Cheers

History The club was established in 1969 as BSC Parkgate and played in the Hatchard and Sheffield Association leagues before joining the Yorkshire League in 1974. In 1979 they were promoted from Division Three to Division Two, and when the league merged with the Midland League to form the Northern Counties East League (NCEL) in 1982, Parkgate were entered into Division One South of the new competition.[2] In 1986 they were promoted to the NCEL Division One. Two years after changing their name to RES Parkgate in 1990,[3] they installed floodlights, and in 1994 they changed their name again, this time to just Parkgate.[4] The 1997–98 season saw Parkgate reach the final of the Sheffield & Hallamshire Senior Cup for the first time, losing to Emley at Hillsborough (they lost two further finals in 2006 and 2011).

They were finally promoted to the NCEL Premier Division in 2007 when they won the Division One title, and they have remained in this division ever since, reaching a high point in 2011 when they finished as league runners-up.

JAMIE MINES was a real fans’ favourite for his goalscoring exploits at clubs like Frome Town, Larkhall Athletic, Paulton Rovers and Radstock Town.

“In his early 20s he was quite direct – he wouldn’t want me to say, ‘greedy’,” says former team-mate and long-time friend Billy Wright. “At the age of 23 or 24 something clicked and he started banging in goals left, right and centre. At Larkhall he was very prolific and was a big part of some successful seasons.

“He was part of the Frome set-up and a fans’ favourite as they went up through the leagues. He loves playing football. He’s a very infectious character who loves the team spirit.

“We’ve got a very close-knit group of friends born from our football days 10-15 years ago.

We used to all knock about in Sunday football when that was popular as well.”

But this isn’t just a happy story.

Days before Christmas, around seven weeks ago, the 33-year-old, a scaffolder, was working at height in Swindon when he was severely electrocuted.

Instead of spending his first Christmas with his five-month old twins Isabella and Savannah he was in an induced coma in hospital. His injuries so severe that both hands and one of his legs have been amputated. It’s difficult to imagine how much his life has been changed forever in a single moment.

The Football Family can sound a tired cliche at times. But it’s in times such as this it rings true.

And the sport is looking after one of its own. A Go Fund Me page set-up to raise money for Mines smashed the original target of £10,000. The next milestone of £20,000 was quickly surpassed with donations flooding in from all over the country. The running total is now at £88,600 – and it’s not stopping there.

Frome, Slough Town, Bath City, Warminster, Westbury United, Bradford Town, Larkhall, Shepton Mallett and Kettering Town have all held bucket collections.

Former team-mate Matt Cooper raised £6,000 with a game in Australia.

Wright played with Mines and his older brother Ben for

years and is helping with the mammoth fundraising effort.

“It’s amazing to see the football community pull together, hear about it and do something about it,” Wright says.

“Even though you don’t play in the same team as somebody, it’s that thought of loving the game so much and having it taken away from you in the blink of an eye.”

Alan Shearer, Michael Owen, Burnley boss Sean Dyche, boxer Joe Calzaghe, writer Alastair Campbell and comedian Rob Brydon have all been in touch and recorded video messages of support.

Mines is still in intensive care but he’s making progress in what has been a very dire situation.

“He’s definitely aware of all the support that’s been coming in,” Wright said. “It’s a massive help to him so that’s been positive.

“He’s seen all the video messages that have come through and they’ve cheered him up.”

On March 19, Frome Town will host a family fun day. Entry is free and 12 teams – drawn out of a hat by Arsenal greats Lee Dixon and David Seaman – will play for the Mines Cup. Frome Town legends – led by goal hero Mark Salter – are taking part, along with other teams from the clubs Mines played for or players he’s played with.

After the tournament, there will be an auction with some amazing lots on offer.

Signed shirts from Newcastle United, Bristol City, Swindon Town and Burnley as well as an England shirt signed by Gazza, who has also sent a personal message to Mines.

Rehabilitation There’s even an autographed Joe Montana NFL helmet, Bath rugby shirt, Ricky Hatton shorts, Chris Eubank Snr and Jnr boxing gloves, Fernando Alonso’s steering wheel and Frome-born Jenson Button’s signed BAR helmet.

It’s hoped the cash will keep pouring in to help Mines’ future.

“The idea of the fund is to help with his rehabilitation,” Wright said. “That’s not cheap. There are programmes and places you can go to around the world for people who have lost limbs and the Army do lots of things too.

“This money will be used to help him get the best support and treatment possible. It will help him massively.”

LAST TIME AT HOME Worksop Town 0-2 Loss Retford welcomed neighbours Worksop Town to the Jones & Co Stadium on Saturday for the eagerly awaited Bassetlaw Derby and an opportunity to secure the double over the visitors, having won at Sandy Lane earlier in the season.

United needed the points in their battle for survival, whilst Worksop were looking to record their third successive win. Retford included new signing Sol Williams in their starting line up and new faces Max Philis and Tommy Lewis on the bench.

The visitors, backed by their usual large following were first on the attack but skipper Kyle Jordan was twice caught offside in the first two minutes as Worksop looked to use the long ball and get the target man in behind the home defence.

However, a minute later he did beat the offside trap but was tackled by United skipper Brad Kilner as he shaped to shoot, at the expense of a corner. The corner was cleared by Kyle Wesley and as the ball came back into the area, it took a deflection and keeper Josh Perryman did well to smother the ball. Retford hit back and Oliver Perry was brought down as he tried to free Cameron Dear in behind the Worksop defence but the free kick came to nothing. On seven minutes, a cross from former Badger, Adam Scott found Kyle Jordan in the area but his shot was charged down by Lee Betts to give the visitors their second corner of the game. The kick from Kieran Fenton was easily gathered by Josh Perryman and the danger cleared. United tried to get a foothold and a run by Oliver Perry was halted by Samuel Weston deep in the visitor’s half. Then on nine minutes, Kyle Jordan latched on to another long pass out of defence but was brilliantly denied

by Josh Perryman as he stood his ground and pushed the effort round the post for yet another corner. On fifteen minutes United mounted their first meaningful attack when a run from Cameron Dear forced a corner off Steve Wankienicz. The

corner caused a problem in the goalmouth and Oliver Perry saw his effort cleared off the line but only as far as Cameron Dear and as he played the ball back in, the defence held firm and cleared up field and away from danger. Three minutes later, Sam Kay and Ishmael Dawson combined down the right to free Oliver Perry but as he tried to get past Samuel Weston, the referee penalised the United player for a foul.

On twenty one minutes, the pressure from the visitors finally paid dividends, when Matthew Parkin played a pass into Kyle Jordan and he took the ball into the area and turned his effort back across the goal, agonisingly wide of Josh Perryman and into the net for the opening goal.

Worksop looked to force home their advantage and a minute later, Adam Scott won a free kick on the left but his cross into the area was easily taken by Josh Perryman. At the other end, Oliver Perry was well tackled by Steve Wankienicz but as the attack continued, Jack Carter won a corner for the hosts but the kick was cleared up to half way and only a combination of Kyle Wesley and Ishmael Dawson, prevented Adam Scott from breaking clear. On thirty two minutes, United were almost caught out when Jordan Hodder hit a hopeful ball forward into the area and as Josh Perryman came to collect, he appeared to lose sight of the ball in the sun, and the ball brushed his head but fell wide of the post for a corner.

Both sides were looking to force an advantage but neither could fashion a clear opportunity although on forty four minutes, United won a corner and the ball in from Cameron Dear found Ishmael Dawson in the area but as he shaped to shoot, he was closed down and his effort went wide of the target. Despite the visitors dominating the early play and scoring the only goal, the United defence were dealing confidently with the threat and were well in the game at half time.

The first meaningful attack in the second half came on forty nine minutes when Cameron Dear and Jake Ashton combined but the ball eventually ran through to Jon Kennedy in the Worksop goal.

On fifty three minutes, the visitors won a free kick out on the left and when Kieran Fenton fed Adam Scott he ran across the edge of the area before shooting but his effort went well wide of the post.

Two minutes later, Jake Ashton and Cameron Dear worked an opening for Jack Carter, but his shot failed to trouble Jon Kennedy. A minute later, Cameron Dear forced his way into the area and was well tackled by Steve Wankienicz as he shaped to shoot and the ball ran out for a corner. On fifty nine minutes, Oliver Perry fed

Jack Carter and when his cross was miskicked by two defenders, the ball fell back to Oliver Perry some six yards out but the ball bobbled in front of him and he lifted his effort over the bar. Retford were looking much the stronger team at this point and mounted another threat on sixty four minutes when Sol Williams and Oliver Perry fed Ishmael Dawson and when his cross found Brad Kilner, he hit his shot over the bar, but the linesman had already flagged for offside against Ishmael Dawson. Worksop were struggling to make inroads into the United half and Brad Kilner and Kyle Wesley were cutting out any threat offered by the visitors, although they were awarded a free kick on the edge of the area when Sol Williams was penalised as the ball bounced up and hit his arm. Kyle Jordan hit the free kick over the wall but was denied by Josh Perryman when he brilliantly tipped the shot over the bar for a corner. This began a spell of pressure from the visitors and Mitch Husbands hit an effort over the bar on sixty nine minutes when well placed in the area. On seventy five minutes, Max Philis who had just replaced Sam Kay, fed the ball through to Cameron Dear and as he raced towards goal, he was upended by Samuel Weston right on the edge of the area. Cameron Dear took responsibility for the kick and his shot flashed just wide of the post with Jon Kennedy rooted to the spot. On eighty minutes, Worksop doubled their lead when a tussle in the box between Kyle Wesley and Kyle Jordan resulted in the referee awarding the visitors a penalty, which Kyle Jordan dispatched by sending Josh Perryman the wrong way. Two minutes later, Kyle Jordan should have claimed his hat trick when he met a cross from Mitch Husbands and somehow contrived to put his header over the bar from six yards out. To try and rescue something from the game, manager Mark Wilson brought Shane Cocking and Ash Shannon on to add fresh legs but Worksop saw out the game and took the bragging rights on this occasion with a 2-0 win in front of a massive attendance of 617.

On the balance of play, this was a game that United could have got something from and they will be disappointed with the result. To be fair, Worksop dominated the early stages and took their chances when they came along.

An entertaining game played out in front of the highest Northern Counties East League attendance so far this season. Next is a difficult trip to Liversedge next Saturday, but with all still to play for, United can go there confident of getting a positive result.

Unsafe changing room floors lead to postponement Saturday’s Toolstation NCEL Premier Division match between Worksop Town and Handsworth Parramore has been postponed due to health and safety reasons at the Windsor Foodservice Stadium.

The floors in the changing rooms have been found to be unsafe and the league have ruled that there will be no NCEL games played at the ground until the matter is dealt with.

The league has been assured that both Worksop and Parramore will be looking to solve the situation next week.

Dodsworth becomes Parras assistant boss Toolstation NCEL Premier Division side Handsworth Parramore have confirmed that Jason Dodsworth has become their new assistant manager.

managerial record which has seen him be instrumental in the rise of league rivals Athersley Recreation where he was part of the management team for over a decade before stepping down at the end of last season.

He helped to successfully guide them to promotion into the NCEL and then into the Premier Division whilst winning the Sheffield & Hallamshire Senior Cup in a memorable night at Hillsborough along the way.

A club statement said: “Jason brings to the club a wealth of experience, drive and a vast knowledge of the NCEL and the local non-league circuit.

“He’s a hard working individual who gives and expects 110%, and he is well known to have a great knack of unearthing talent.

“The club were overwhelmed with interested parties to the vacant position and we would like to place on record our thanks to everyone who showed an

interest in joining our club.

“On behalf of everyone at the club, we’d like to welcome Jason to the Ambers and we wish him every success in his new role.”

Dodsworth said of his appointment: “When the position became available at Handsworth it was easy to accept the role.

“It’s a fantastic club that’s got ambitions to move up the football ladder. The club is well known and well respected in the football pyramid and it goes without saying that it is built on a fantastic foundation of volunteers and a superb youth system, from the juniors right through to the seniors - it’s a fantastic club to be at.”

He added: “I know a few of the people within the club from my dealings with them over the years and, of course, know a number of the squad.

“I’ve always had the utmost respect of how the club goes about its business and am delighted to be joining up with [manager] Mick Godber.

“I’m an ambitious and driven person who will give every last ounce to gain success and I’m really excited to work with Mick and the club and see where we can take it.

“I have spent a long time at Athersley and I’m proud of what we achieved there. Athersley are in safe hands, but Handsworth is a new chapter for me.

“I know what’s expected and I’ll do everything I can to help the club achieve its aims. I can’t wait to get started!”

Godber said of the appointment: “Jason’s experience and enthusiasm to join up with the club, together with his knowledge and work ethic, will, I feel, be a great addition to the management team.

“I’m looking forward to building a strong and successful relationship with him.”
