Today we welcome our neighbours Stockton town FC to town in which I’m sure Michael Dunwell will have his team well fired up for this so let’s hope for a entertaining game but as always a three point victory for town.

Stockton coming up have been tipped to be among the favorites for promotion first time around and while they have had a great start this league is probably the toughest it has been for many of years and experience of keeping momentum will only tell once the new year turns and the league takes it shape, Stockton have some very dangerous players in there ranks so I will be making sure my players are fully aware of there danger men.

This month again sees a heavy fixture list in games so il be explaining to my players the understanding of rotation to keep things fresh and give fringe players an opportunity of game time and keep things ticking along on the pitch, while in pre season we brought in a influx of ten players in I openly said it might take three months for players to gel as a group and I firmly believe that things are coming together with the squad now which should see ourselves start showing continuity on the pitch of play.

On a personal sad note our loan signing Jack turn bull has no option but to take a break from football after the shock death of his mother last weekend and our thoughts go out to Jack and his family .

Two players who are now training again are Connor Dunvalney and Danny Maloney both players have had long term injury’s and are key players in this squad and will play a major part our season. The reserves are now up and running and I firmly believe there is two or three players I’ve watched will be invited into first team training to get them to understand the level of stepping up to our grading something I’m looking forward to watching them improve.

Our FA vase win at bishop Auckland has certainly caught the eye of everyone involved at the club since the draw on Monday we now travel to Ashton near Wigan and the interest of town fans wanting to travel is hotting up so we are expecting a very good following on the day in what promises to be a great day away for the players and club.

CLUB HISTORY

clubhistory BILLINGHAM TOWN was originally known as Billlingham Social Club and was founded in 1967

by Tom Donnelly and Robbie Cushley. Tom, who played in Town’s first game back in 1968, has been secretary of Billingham Town since its conception until 2000 when he relinquished this post to become chairman of the club and subsequently is now life president.

In 1968 Town joined the Second Division of the Stockton & District League and won the league title at the first attempt, playing at Mill Lane and the legendary slope – the top of the corner flag was level with the crossbar. Town stayed in the Stockton League until 1973 and won the Division A League title three times and the League Cup twice and also winning the Stockton Charity Cup twice.

In 1974 Town were admitted into the Teesside League and remained members for eight years.

During this time they won the League twice (197879 and 1981-82) and were runners-up once. In 1975 they were beaten finalists in the Durham Amateur Cup Final, but won the competition in 1976 and 1982.

In 1982 the club took the golden opportunity of joining the newly formed Second Division of the Dryboroughs Northern League and changed its name to Billingham Town. After three years in the Second Division Town gained promotion into the First Division but were immediately relegated back to the Second Division in 1986. However, they bounced straight back in 1987 and lost to neighbours Synthonia in the final of the Durham Challenge Cup a year later. Another relegation followed in 1991-92, but they regained their place in the top flight in 1997-98 and have remained there since. @billinghamtownfc

After being runners-up in the Durham Challenge Cup in 1988-89 and 2001-02 Town eventually won the cup in season 2003-04 when manager Alan Robinson led them to a 3-1 victory over then UniBond side Bishop Auckland.

Since 1981, ground improvements at the Bedford Terrace ground have resulted in new dressing rooms, a cantilever stand, hard terracing behind one goal, hard terracing and covered accommodation opposite the main stand. A refreshment room and a re-turfed pitch surrounded by an 8ft boundary fence around 5.5. acres of land.

Bedford Terrace is now recognised as having one of the more attractive grounds in the NorthEast. Floodlights were installed in the 1992-93 season with the official switch-on match against Middlesbrough F.C. After sever gales blew down one of the pylons, Town installed new floodlights in 2003.

In the summer of 2007 Hartlepool United invested in Bedford Terrace and completely re-laid the football pitch to a depth of several feet and installed new drainage. The new pitch measurements and now exactly the same measurements of Pool’s Victoria Park. Also behind the scenes there has been a total facelift with new showers and central heating being put in the dressing rooms. Hartlepool now play the majority of their home Reserve games at Bedford Terrace.

Last season saw the arrival of Manager Barry Oliver and assistant Graham Popple whom have brought stability to the club and managed a respectable finish in the 2015/16 season. Looking forward the club has a new focus and a bright future with a forward thinking management team who play football the right way.

captainslog Welcome to Bedford Terrace for today’s game against Stockton Town It’s been an up and down season so far with results not going the way we would of liked but with new faces in the team it was always going to take time before we gelled as a group and learnt how one another played.

Last Friday night away to Bishop Auckland in the FA Vase was a night I won’t ever forget. A great 2-1 win against a very strong side the league above and playing with only 10 men for a good 35 minutes (sorry about that!) was outstanding by the lads. Started slowly but came into the game and showed great character to battle and throw ourselves in front of every ball to get that win.

Great performance between the sticks from Tom who was outstanding all game pulling off some vital saves and also to Mark Dixon who was unwell and couldn’t even speak during the game but put in a great performance. A special mention to the fans who came to support us Friday night, you kept us going for 90 minutes and the reaction at the end of the game was fantastic. The dressing room after the game was buzzing with every player smiling and singing it was a fantastic atmosphere to be involved in.

The reaction on social media after the game too for the players/staff and the club itself was amazing to see.

Today’s game against Stockton Town will be a good and tough game for everyone involved. Stockton are a group of lads who have been together for years so are a very close knit team who will fight for 90 minutes no matter what happens. It’s a derby too so every player will be up for it and I’m sure the fans will be well up for this one too.

Hopefully this season will have more days/nights like that one at Bishop. The lads are really starting to gel and hopefully the results and performances on the pitch will start to show what this team is capable of and we can start climbing up the league.

On a sad note everybody at Billingham Town would like to give their thoughts to our loan signing from Hartlepool United Jack Turnbull who sadly lost his mum this week.

town squad Thomas Dawson Goalkeeper Another recent acquisition to the squad. Dawson arrives via Bishop Auckland and Middlesbrough Academy. Has the potential to be a very smart goalkeeper. Scotland under 18 international who commands his area and good ball distribution skills. Excellent signing.

Robbie Stockburn 24 Goalkeeper Ex Synthonia shot stopper. Played with Jack Connor and Daniel Maloney at Grangetown Boys Club. Spent last season at Darlington Road for West Auckland Town and joined Town during the summer.

Paul Watson 29 Goalkeeper August signing. Started with Whitby Town Juniors in his teens and spent most of his time with Fishburn Park of the Teesside League. Pre Season fitness with Norton & Stockton Ancients.

Mark Dixon 23 Left Back Productive first season with Billingham Town and was in excellent form before season curtailed by an ankle injury. Studied Sports Science at University and Wearside League for Stockton Town Stephen Oakley 25 Defender Tall Centre half who is dangerous from set pieces. Experienced player who joined Town from Ryhope last November. Previous clubs include Whitby Town, Guisborough Town, Horden, Esh Winning, Norton and Brandon United.

Dan Rowbotham 25 Defence Centre half and brother of Josh Rowbotham. Played with his sibling at Synthonia before a short spell with Town. Returned back to Synthonia but decided to sign for Town again in July.

Lee Moore 19 Defence Suffered from an unexplained Liver condition. As a result Bishop Auckland have loaned out the full back for three months to improve his fitness and to gain valuable game time. Former Sunderland Academy product and Spennymoor Town first team member. Already shown his quality in a handful of matches.

Jack Turnbull 19 Defence Hartlepool United Professional from their development side. The central defender is currently on loan as part of his work experience. Although he is diminutive in stature, he is superb in the air and positionally adept. Has a bright future ahead of him.

Gary Redman 24 Defence/ Midfield Utility player and a fans favourite.

Spent most of last season at right back and can also play in central midfield or out on the wing. Northern league experience with Horden, Stokesley, Thornaby and Norton & Stockton Ancients.

Matty Hawkins 22 Midfield Tall, Strong Central Midfielder. New signing from Norton & Stockton Ancients. Two previous spells with Stokesley Sports Club Daniel Maloney 24 Midfield Combative central midfielder.

Played alongside Jack Connor at Grangetown Boys Club. Popular squad member Luke Hogan 19 Midfield Small but a quick and tenacious midfielder. Impressed against Town last season while at Esh Winning.

Connor Dunlavey 22 Midfield Extremely pacy midfielder from Spennymoor Town. Signed in September but unfortunately pulled his hamstring seventeen minutes into his debut. Full of promise and one to keep an eye on when he regains fitness.

Lewis Green 22 Midfield Central midfielder who played for Town during the infamous 2013/14 campaign but suffered from a broken leg. Since then has recovered to have spells with Newton Aycliffe and Seaham Red Star. Still young and has time in his favour.

Jamie Davis 28 Midfield/ Forward Attacking midfielder. Played for Billingham Town when he was a

teenager in Northern League Division One. Wearside League football with Hartlepool FC and Seaham Red Star Reserves before returning to Town last season.

Lee Jones 23 Midfield/Forward Signed early 2016. Previously with Ryhope and Hartlepool FC. Looking to play more regularly this season.

Marcus Allen 19 Midfield Another teenager blessed with pace and a pre season signing. Had a short spell with Darlington Railway Athletic and Stokesley Under 18s.

Bradlee Popple 18 Midfield/ Forward Son of Assistant Manager, Graham Popple. Only eighteen but played a handful of games last season.

Another pacy winger who recently turned out for the reserves. As with Marcus Allen, another youngster, Popple will be looking to get game time with Paul Beddow’s squad.

Craig Hutchinson 22 Forward Diminutive but technically gifted striker and Towns top scorer last season. A real find from Hartlepool FC in the Wearside League.

Christopher Dickinson 21 Forward Professional career with York City and at Annan Athletic in Scotland.

Previously with Darlington, Leeds United and Middlesbrough Academies. Last season had spells with West Auckland Town, Billingham Town and Billingham Synthonia.

Returned back to Town in the summer.

Daniel Lambert 22 Striker Excellent pre season signing and already prolific in friendlies. Played for Darlington in the Conference and then moved on to Spennymoor, Marske, Newton Aycliffe and Bishop Auckland. Natural goalscorer.

Elliott Beddow 19 Forward Son of Reserves Manager Paul Beddow. High hopes expected from the youngster after scoring his first goal for the club against Thornaby.

Quick, and excellent at holding up the ball. Competition for Craig Hutchinson and Chris Dickinson. Spent majority of last season with Hartlepool FC Reserves.

Michael Campbell 22 Goalkeeper A tall rangy goalkeeper, great shot stopper and good distribution. ExHartlepool FC, and spent last season at near neighbours Norton & Stockton Ancients.

Ryan Fenwick 22 Right Back Strong running fullback who likes to get forward, plucked from Sunday League football after impressing the management playing alongside Scott Close.

Sam Dobson 18 Fullback An accomplished defender at such a young age. Sam can play on the left or right of the defence. A popular member of the squad and a hit with the ladies!

Dean Cope 22 Defence Mobile defender who predominantly plays in the centre but can also cover on the right. Signed for the Town first team at the back end of last season and will be looking to push on again.

Scott Close 23 Central Defence Tall, stocky centre-half who is a handful in the air and strong on the ground.

The leader at the back and forms a good partnership with Dean Cope. Previously played for Norton & Stockton Ancients.

Danny Cartwright 23 Defence/Midfield/Attack ‘Carty’ is a useful utility player and can slot in anywhere down the middle of the pitch or even at right back. Tough tackling and takes no prisoners, pops up with a few goals, and they usually prove to be important ones. ExEasington Colliery.

Kyle Alexander 22 Defence/Midfield Kyle is another player who can cover a number of positions, quick and strong he is at home on either the left or right and can play fullback or wide midfield.

Andrew Sullivan 24 Left Back Sully is an energetic fullback who likes to go forward and get crosses in the box. Was at Hartlepool United as a youngster and previous experience with Willington, Easington Colliery and Hartlepool FC. Anth Readman 23 Utility Anth is the ultimate utility man, he has played in every position on the pitch apart from goalkeeper (and he’d give it a good go!). At home out wide or in the fullback positions, a player Paul trusts and knows he can rely on.

Ian Riley 30 Midfield The elder statesman of the squad, Riley provides the calm in the middle of the park and his influence can sometimes be underestimated by the opposi-

tion. Keeps things simple and keeps the ball moving.

Ross Kidson 20 Midfield A midfield powerhouse, Ross is box to box, whether it be in the middle of the park or on either wing his energy and creativity make him a valuable player. Another who has previously played for Wearside League team Hartlepool FC. Aaron Doyle 26 Midfield Doyley is the voice of the team, a competitive central midfielder who can play a bit as well. Great in the air despite his size and strong on the ball. Previously with Leeds United as a kid and has already played for the Town first team as well as Hartlepool FC and Easington Colliery.

Dom Laffin 23 Midfield/Attack Dom is another of the more vocal members of the squad, a real character in the dressing room and a massive influence on the pitch. A talented player who can control midfield or play as a target man. Shares the captaincy responsibilities with Aaron Doyle. Has previous playing experience with Seaton Carew and Hartlepool FC in the Wearside League.

Alex Pyne 17 Midfield Young midfielder who has come in this summer and shown a lot of promise, determined character and a talented ball player. Will be looking to push on into the side and gain valuable experience of senior football.

Scott Stephenson 23 Midfield Stevo can play on either wing and is deceptively quick. Great passer of the ball and will be looking to get back to full fitness and show exactly what he can offer. Another who has previously played for the first team.

Jake Larkin Larko is a bag of tricks, he can be a frustrating player at times but can win games with a piece of magic. Larko is no slouch and his turn of pace complements his skill on the ball.

Overall a very effective attacking player.

Brad Popple 18 Midfield/Attack Brad is a very capable player, loves to have the ball at his feet and make things happen, can play out wide or off the front and will prove a good addition to the squad. Previously played for the first team and in the Wearside League with Murton.

Matty Newbury 21 Striker Matty is a workaholic, he thrives on unsettling defenders and is full of pace and energy, he chips in with his fair share of goals but will be looking to be more consistent in front of goal this coming season.

Carl O’Sullivan 19 Striker Carlo is another front man who never seems to stop running and has pace to burn, creates numerous chances for himself with his work rate but will be looking to head the teams goal scoring this season. A player in demand Carl has played for Ryhope CW, Hartlepool FC and Easington Colliery.

Niall Bradley 29 Striker Niall Is a tall imposing figure and unsettles the opposition just by his size, a rangy forward player who offers a different outlet to the other strikers, also has a knack for being in the right place at the right time.

TODAY’S VISITORS

today’s visitors stockton town Stockton Town FC was formed initially in 1979 under the football clubs previous name Hartburn Juniors. The club was formed by Derrick Small who at the time was coaching youngsters (under 10) from the Hartburn area of Stockton at the YMCA. A team was initially entered in the Acklam 5 a side league in Middlesbrough to give the youngsters at that time the opportunity to play organised football.

Following on from the success of the 5 a side team it was decided in 1981 to enter an 11 a side team in the Teesside Junior Football Alliance (TJFA) at the under 12 age group. At that time there were a number of players who were under the age requirements for under 12 and they continued to play in local 5 a side leagues. It was at this time that the club home colours that remain now, yellow/royal shirts & royal shorts, was established.

The club started to steadily. The first trophies recorded were also won with the U13’s beating Stockton West End in the Stockton Youth Cup. Notably the U12’s reached the league cup final and the

U14’s the North Riding County Cup Final.

The following season the U14’s went on to win the North Riding Cup Final beating Marton 3-2. Lee Roxby made the final 20 in selection for England Schoolboys, only one of two players selected from the North East.

During this period the club had their first success with players moving on to join professional clubs; Mark Sunley – Middlesbrough, Ian Hutchinson – Halifax, Chris Hope – Darlington & Rob Lake – Middlesbrough.

In 1986 the club took a step backwards in terms of team numbers with only one team being registered with the Cleveland Youth League. Derek Small the initial founder resigned from the club and Mike Ranson took up the mantle of running the clubs only team with a couple of willing parents.

By 1989 the club was on the up again, with an U10 & U14 team, the U10’s going on to win the League Trophy that season. The club steadily grew to six teams in 1991 with U10, 11, 12, 13, 15 & 16’s.

In 1998 Peter MacLean resigned as Club Chairman to move over to the TJFA and Maurice Bell took the reigns as Club Chairman. Under the Chairmanship of M Bell the club grew from strength to strength. In 1999 organised mini soccer was introduced to junior football and Hartburn Juniors grew to 10 teams with the introduction of 3 mini soccer teams at U10 age group.

Around this time the FA had released initiatives whereby they were looking to encourage junior clubs to introduce coach & club development. Hartburn Juniors enrolled their first coaches on the FA Coaching Certificate, with Gary Sudron becoming the clubs first level 2 coach in 1999. The following year this was followed by Alan Brown & Neil Turnbull obtaining the same award.

The club began a fairly steep development project with the aim to obtain the FA Charter Standard for Clubs which was successfully achieved in 2002. In 2003 the club also had success in terms of coaching with both Gary Sudron & Alan Brown obtaining their FA Coaching Licence, UEFA B. In terms of club development, it was felt by the members of the club at that time that the club name didn’t really reflect the area whereby most players came from. The club had grown from predominantly having players in the Hartburn/ Fairfield areas of Stockton to players who came from all over Stockton and in fact from Billingham, Middlesbrough & Thornaby. It was therefore decided in the best interest of the club to change the clubs name to STOCKTON TOWN FC. There was also a desire within the club to try to resurrect Stockton Town as senior football club and it was felt a great development opportunity to achieve this from grass roots through a junior football club.

IT’S NOT always the greatest idea for true feelings about football to be put out there for all to hear. Just ask Sam Allardyce, who must really wish that he’d buttoned his beak instead of giving chapter and verse in that expensive restaurant.

Keeping mum keeps you in a job, but Evo-Stik Northern Premier League chairman Mark Harris has a fresh take on things. He wants to usher in an era of transparency.

Harris and his running of the league was called into question days before the season started. Ilkeston, one of the member clubs of its Premier division, were suddenly suspended. It caused havoc, and they were eventually granted a licence to play on August 27.

The whole thing had a waft of panic, disorganisation and the ‘very Non-League’ late-in-the-day drama that you only seem to get with our clubs.

The dust has now settled on the Ilkeston debacle, but instead of letting the episode be quickly forgotten, Harris has offered background.

Writing to club chairmen in details, the league offered a blow-by-blow account of what happened, when and why.

Nothing was off-limits – and it has Harris questioning why this can’t become a permanent feature.

“Sometimes, when important situations like this are ongoing, we are not always in a position to be as open as we would like,” he said.

“This is often down to the legalities, not because there is something to hide. This is not us treating supporters with distain – in these days of social media, there’s an immediacy to have information. Supporters expect it and we respect that.

“There is a lot of speculation and baseless inaccuracies, but we are not in a position to clarify things which is clearly a frustration.

“We took the steps to publish our written reasons, a lot like the Football Association do, and they have been sent to club chairman to digest.

“This is something we are now considering for the future in all big decisions we need to make. It’s not always possible to be transparent at times transparency is wanted.

Each case is of course different, but we believe people need to understand the reasons why decisions are taken.”

WHO WOULD be a manager? Well this time last year the exact question was more ‘who would be a Football League manager’. But questions are suddenly being asked about the cut-throat nature of the Non-League game.

Twelve months ago, two managers in our top three divisions – the National League, North and South – had left their jobs.

September 2016 had nearly a week to run by the time boss number ten, Braintree’s Jamie Day, got given the tin tack on Sunday. By that point not a single Premier League or Football League change had be made.

So what’s different? Who better to ask than the longest serving manager in senior football.

Wealdstone’s Gordon Bartlett is over-seeing his 22nd season at the helm and he makes a strong case when suggestion social media has heightened the fear factor for chairmen.

“There a few things to blame for the current situation,” he told us last week. “Social media is now huge absolutely massive. I remember when we had a bad game when I first took over, I would leave the changing room, go for a drink in the bar and the only moans you hear are from a few old guys on stools telling me we were c**p. Then they would say ‘see you next Saturday’ and they walked out of the door. It’s the only negativity you would hear.

“Now? It’s a different ball game totally and times have changed. The internet has made the life of a manager ten times more difficult in my opinion. The fans now have a loud voice - if they aren’t happy, and threaten not to turn up to games, then the people running the clubs know it. It’s dangerous, but it’s the world we now live in.”

RAY SIMPSON LOOKS AT LAST WEEKENDS GAMES

Stockton Town, in their first ever Vase competition, pulled off a major shock when they beat four times winners Whitley Bay 2-0 on Saturday.

Town was a club in its infancy when Whitley last won the Vase in 2011, and manager Micky Dunwell said; “The win shows how far the club has come in five years.

“We were excellent all the way through the game and fully deserved the win. Our pace in the final third of the pitch caused Whitley all sorts of problems and won us the game. I can’t praise the players enough.”

Whitley Bay keeper Tom Flynn pulled off a couple of good saves in the first half, but Stockton took the lead just after half time with a header by Adam Nicholson from a corner.

They made sure of a place in Monday’s first round draw when Joe Scaife Wheatley tapped in the second on 68 minutes.

Whitley manager Ian Chandler said; “There was no spark at all.”

Easington, from the ENL Second Division also pulled off a good result, beating Ashington from a division above them 2-0 at the Welfare Ground.

They took the lead after 16 minutes through Joe Kerridge, and after they absorbed lots of Ashington pressure, Luke Page broke away and got the second late in the game.

Easington manager Paul Frame said; “The club has come a long way in the last two years, and it’s fantastic to

be a part of the club’s revival. It was great to get a result against a team from above us.”

West Auckland went out, beaten 2-1 by Padiham with the winning goal coming right at the end of extra time.

Padiham’s James Dean gave his side a half time lead, but Adam Preston hit back for West just on the hour.

Shaun Hudson hit the post and Matty Moffat was denied in normal time, and just when a replay looked likely in extra time, Dean scored in the second minute of time added on.

New joint managers Steve Skinner and Darren Williams took over after the end of the game from caretaker manager Mark Hudson.

Newcastle Benfield had a good win, by 3-1 over Liversedge from the Northern Counties East League.

Dylan McAvoy gave Benfield a first half lead, then Mark Turnbull’s cross was deflected in by a defender. Mechack Kanda made it 3-0 in the last minute.

Newcastle Benfield joint manager Mark Convery said; “The result was the main thing. It wasn’t a great performance but we looked comfortable from start to finish

Consett crashed out of their second cup competition inside four days when they were beaten 3-1 at home by Pickering.

After Consett keeper Chris Elliott stopped a penalty, Joe Danby put Pickering into the lead, then Consett were caught unawares by a quickly taken free kick by Ryan Blott for the second. Nathan Kamara made it 3-0, before Michael Sweet pulled a goal back.

Consett manager Mark Eccles said; “We started the game well and that was probably our downfall as the lads became complacent and let then into the game. We came out for the Mark Eccles second half and looked better but when they were gifted a goal, we were always chasing. The better team won, it was a very poor performance from ourselves.”

Billingham Synthonia just managed to squeeze past Heaton Stannington by the only goal of the game, Liam O’Sullivan scoring from a Chay Liddle assist.

Paul Chow, who scored the fastest ever goal in a Wembley Vase final when he was at Whitley Bay, was on target for Jarrow Roofing in their 4-0 away win at Northallerton.

Adam Sakr finished off a good move to put Roofing into an 18th minute lead, then Chow headed the second on 63 minutes. Northallerton’s Danny McLachlan was red carded for dissent, then Sakr found the corner of the net for the third. Robbie Williamson finished off the scoring.

Jarrow Roofing manager Richie McLoughlin said; “It was a hard place to go to and they were well up for the game and made it hard for us. We stood up well to battle it out and win the game.”

Northallerton manager Darren Trotter said; “We weren’t good enough in both boxes. We probably had the majority of the play but we didn’t take our chances and got punished from Jarrow’s quality up top.”

Ryhope CW midfielder Nathan O’Neill scored a hat trick in their 5-0 away win at Ryton and Crawcrook, with Paul Braithwaite and Joe Melvin getting the others.

Ryhope CW manager Gary Pearson said; “It was a great professional performance to the game throughout and pleased to be in the draw as it was a potential banana skin. There were some solid performances, but Nathan O’Neill was the stand out with a hat trick from midfield. @billinghamtownfc

South Shields won 4-0 at a spirited Esh Winning, with goals by Lee Paul Scroggins, Robbie Briggs, Owen Simpson and Wembley winner Gavin Cogdon.

Esh have added Tony Boakes and Jacky Traynor to their management team.

Esh Winning manager Alan Hayes said; “I was really proud of the team who worked hard for 90 minutes against a top class South Shields. Now we need to carry that on in the league.”

Chester-le-Street defeated Norton, from a division below them, by 3-2 at Chester Moor.

Nicky Martin put Norton into an early lead from a Phil Caley assist, but Chester equalised with a Cameron Nicol free kick.

Nicol put Chester into the lead after he broke away on 50 minutes, then Dominic Laws scored the third. Lewis Walton pulled a goal back from a cross for Norton, but they couldn’t force extra time.

Chester-le-Street manager Colin Wake said; “Excellent performance and the scoreline flattered Norton. It would have Colin Wake been more emphatic but we couldn’t put the game to bed. Overall we thoroughly deserved the win.”

Norton manager Deano Browne said; “We started very well and scored a great goal but we dropped off and let Chester back into the game. Chester worked hard and were better at winning second balls. We scored late on and it was a tense last 15 minutes.”

Team Northumbria, who are unbeaten in the second division so far, lost 4-2 at Penrith, while Wearside League Stokesley went down 7-1 at Barnoldswick, Ryan Rivis scoring for them.

life of pie Fans of Billingham Town will be waking up this morning with smiles as wide as the Tees flyover after a famous win at Bishop Auckland in the FA Vase last night.

And it was done in dramatic style.

After the first 10 minutes it looked as though they were going to be on the end of a battering.

Bishop Auckland’s Jeff Smith scored in the first minute and Town fans must have been fearing the worst. Heroics from their keeper Thomas Dawson kept them in the game with a string of fine saves. They were hanging on.

They survived by sticking to their task – resolute defending and hitting Bishop on the break. As the game went on they grew in confidence and in the end you wouldn’t have guessed they were from different divisions.

They could have been level on the 28th minute when Luke Hogan pushed the ball through for Craig Hutchinson. He rounded the keeper and guided it towards the goal, only for it to be cleared off the line. A minute later he rounded the keeper again but his shot was wide of the mark.

Bishop had their chances too, balls drilled across the six-yard box and a handful of longdistance shots as well as the efforts well saved

by Dawson. We had a game on our hands.

Town got their deserved equaliser early in the second half when Hutchinson laid on a measured pass to Luke Hogan who rounded the defender and struck it confidently past the keeper.

Bishop then had a strong shout for a penalty when Andrew Johnson went down after a strong challenge in the box.

But Town’s good fortune didn’t last.

They were down to 10 men for half an hour after Stephen Oakley was sent off for a second yellow card. It would be a Herculean task to hold out.

They battled and scrapped for every ball. They defended from front to back.

But they didn’t just settle for a draw.

With 20 minutes to go, unbelievably Craig Hutchinson scored to put Town ahead.

Bishop just couldn’t find that one clearcut chance to put themselves back in the game.

It must have felt like an eternity before the referee blew for full time. It was the cue for mass celebrations on and off the pitch for the Teessiders. They were through to the next round.

Secret Hopper had a simple message for Barry Oliver at the end of the game: “Great performance. Great win.” It was a simple truth.

Two post scripts: I have a bone to pick with the Billingham Town bench. They had a Christmas bag in their technical area. For goodness sake lads, it’s only September.

And the league’s new Senior Vice President, a certain Mr Amos, was in attendance. No-one was quite sure what the protocol was when meeting him – a tugging of the forelock perhaps, or a doffing of a cap? The jury’s still out on that one.
