FROM the boardroom Good afternoon, and on behalf of everybody at Dunstable Town can I wish you a very Happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year. We extend a warm welcome to the players, officials, and supporters from our ‘very close’ neighbours AFC Dunstable. We look forward to a competitive game on the field and mutual respect off the field. After our win in the corresponding fixture in August, both teams will be keen to perform well in this Boxing Day fixture. After three disappointing results which did no justice to our performances, it was good to get back to winning ways against a strong Thame United side , then to follow this up with a hard earned point at league leaders Peterborough Sports . Credit to both teams at Peterborough, in truly awful conditions .The game was nip and tuck, with the post denying the Blues a late victory. It is so encouraging to hear officials from our opposing clubs speak so positively about our style of play. Sticking to these principles is beginning to really pay dividends. The Development team have also had an encouraging result against Leverstock Green, and the pathway continues, with further players from our youth teams, making the step up. In recent weeks it’s been good to see a

couple of last year’s team visiting us at the club. Both Peter Kioso and Andrew Osei Bonsu have been earning positive reviews at their respective clubs, and it’s gratifying seeing them developing their careers after learning the ropes of the men’s game here at Dunstable. Off the pitch we have launched our Crowd Funding appeal in cooperation with MIND and MIND BLMK. Look out for our Press Releases. We are proud to working so closely with the MIND organisation. Today, we will be taking a bucket collection with all proceeds going to MIND BLMK. We’re also showcasing our Promotional video, as we seek to demonstrate what this club is now all about. Also we are enjoying meeting up with the public who pass through Dunstable town centre as we continue with our stall at the Quadrant. We are also delighted to announce that the club has achieved Charter Standard Community Club status. This is the reward for countless hours behind the scenes, with Alex Alexandrou really driving this to fruition. We couldn’t be prouder! Finally, lets really get behind both teams this afternoon, and create a great atmosphere for this seasonal fixture.

Enjoy the m atch Neil

MANAGER’S NOTEBOOK Good afternoon and welcome back to Creasey Park to everyone during this festive period. A very warm welcome to our live in friends, AFC Dunstable. Of course the first third of the season didn’t go as well as I would have liked and we quickly rattled up the keeper numbers again to 9. Coupled with that we lost such a large volume of key players and that really cost us. However, with those key players trickling back including Nathan Harness, we are able to turn those narrow losses into wins and draws. However, our performances have been pretty consistent and the guys are playing extremely well and developing holistically, which we know is vital for our future. On the Injury front, sadly of course Rio Dasilva broke his leg and is now recovering, thankfully not needing surgery to reset it. Lanre Ladipo had full ACL Reconstruction this week and now starts his further 12 month rehabilitation and we will be there for both players helping them through difficult long layoffs. Keiran Ogden has had a scan and confirmed all his ligaments are in good shape healing nicely and do not require intervention. He still has 4-6 weeks to return. Ethan Lampty picked up that nasty one away in the cup and he’s finally back training and Saul Williams is being assessed still, but we hope it’s nothing lengthy. Fingers crossed now 2019 treats us with a bit of luck and we can keep key players fit.

Thank you all so much for your support and intelligent understanding again during that spell of freak injuries. From me you always are assured we are doing everything we can to entertain you with a brand of football you can justify spending money on, showcasing players that will go onto professional football and working tirelessly on the clubs whole mind set of defining success in a sustainable pathway football club. Enjoy the game and here’s wishing you a warm loving Christmas break with those closest to you and let’s make 2019 a prosperous happy and healthy one.

aFC dUNStabLe hiStORy AFC Dunstable started life as Old Dunstablians Football Club in 1981. The name Old Dunstablians originated from an organisation formed in 1888 for old boys from Dunstable Grammar School. The most famous member of the club is Hollywood actor Gary Cooper, who attended the school in the early 1900’s.

to move to a larger site in Totternhoe and when the new club was opened in 1994, a football pitch was accommodated, s o the football club moved there from Manshead School.

When the Grammar School closed and Manshead School opened they took over the mantle but the old boys club was in decline. In 1981 the head teacher was asked if he could re-launch the name, hence the football club was born.

An improvement in facilities gave the club a chance to apply to join the South Midlands League in 1995. Accepted into the then Division One (Premier and Senior Divisions were the higher divisions) the club struggled, as they flirted with being relegated straight back to the Luton League in the first 2 seasons. Going through new managers every season, they finally started to gain some consolidation and in season 2001-02 the 1st team finished 4th in the league and won the Division One Cup. The following season they just missed out of the title, which was now Division Two. Looking to go one better they finally clinched the title the next season and was runners up in the Division Two Cup.

By 1988 after its centenary, the Old Dunstablians Club ceased to exist but the football club carried on in commemoration and to this day still bears the club crest on its badge. The club started in the Dunstable Alliance Football League for a couple of seasons then moved onto the Luton District and South Bedfordshire League in 1983. Still playing at Manshead School with the 1st team and reserves, success was limited with the 1st team runners up twice in Division One and runners up in the William Pease Cup. While in the Luton League though the 1st team did land the Bedfordshire Junior Cup beating Leighton Athletic on penalties in 1989 –90 season. With the club using Dunstable Town Cricket Club as their social base in Bull Pond Lane, the cricket club was looking

Ground Grading issues were now starting to stop the team from getting promoted, as 2 ground sharing agreements were turned down by the league. This was now the start of a trophy laden period, as the Division Two title again was secured and back-to-back Bedfordshire Senior Trophy’s. Added to that, the

aFC dUNStabLe hiStORy Division Two Cup was won again. The club in 2003-04 decided to launch its youth policy and when the Under 15’s were runners up in the Chiltern Youth league, it started on the path to work its way through the FA Charter Standard. The club then made the decision to change its name to AFC Dunstable, so not to get confused with the local rugby club, as the club started to grow and the name was more associated to a football club. The club kept the name The OD’s, as their nickname. The youth then was awarded the Charter Standard in 2005-06. The next big step was to become a Development Club and a great deal of work saw the club achieve this in 2007. Next up was our goal to become a FA Charter Standard Community Club and 2008 saw the club get there. In that time the club has been awarded the Development Club Of The Year in 2008 and the Community Club Of The Year in 2009. The club now run 30 teams for 2016-17. Then Bedfordshire Football Association approached the club to become partners in the new Creasey Park Community Football Centre in 2008 and this gave the chance to move the 1st team to Creasey Park and apply for promotion to Division One for the start of the 2009-10 season, which was accepted. The team finished a very creditable 5th in its first season at the higher level.

History was also made in 201011, as the team was accepted to participate in the FA Vase. A fine run through t o the 2nd Round Proper was achieved. Looking to improve on the league position the previous season, the team went all out for promotion and finished runners up in the league and gained promotion to the Premier Division at their 2nd attempt. The SSMFL Division One Cup was secured as well. Now with the team in the SSMFL Premier Division and entry into the FA Cup for 201112, finished a fine 3rd in the league. 201213 the team consolidated in the Premier Division and finished a respectable 8th. Their run the FA Cup saw them get through 3 rounds eventually going out to Northwood after a replay. After the team being managed by the most successful pair in the club’s history Alex Butler and Dermot Butler, they decided to step down after 9 years at the helm half way through 2013-14. This left the team in disarray, which saw many stalwarts of the team leave. The club decided to appoint current manager Steve Heath and the club went on a re building exercise. 2014-15 saw the team secure 3rd place in the SSMFL Premier Division as they challenged for the title all season. They

Chris joined the club last season, after 5 years at Arlesey Town, where he was a regular goal scorer. Another tall elegant player, the club have high hopes with Chris in the team this season. RAFE GOODMAN Another talented teenager on the club’s book, Rafe stood head and shoulders above his team-mates at Arlesey Town last season. AFC’s management team moved quickly to secure his signature. Was loaned out to Bigglewade United but is now a key figure of the squad. BJ CHRISTIE The clubs record goal scorer with over 250 goals to his name & now all-time record

appearances. First turned out for the club at 15. Has had a couple of spells away from the club with Dunstable Town, Barton Rovers and Berkhamsted but always returns. RePORtiNG iN

PeteRbOROUGh SPORtS 1-1 dUNStabLe tOWN Dunstable had taken an early lead in the 6th minute when Erin Amu netted following good work from the industrious Chris Wreh who battled hard down the left hand side before setting up Erin to shoot firmly into the right hand corner of Lewis Moat’s goal. Dunstable had the strong wind at their backs, and the wind in their sails as they sought to capitalise on any further Peterborough areas they could exploit. Alex Taylor tested Lewis Moat’s handling on the quarter hour but found him up to the task. Chris Wreh was next to hustle and bustle his way through but couldn’t quite get the purchase he wanted. And then came the rain. A light but persistent drizzle at first. Not that that lasted very long. Within minutes the rain had started to fall heavily with players finding it difficult to stay upright on the increasingly slippery surface. Conditions then dictated that both sides would struggle to play the style of football they enjoy. By the half hour Peterborough had brushed themselves down and got back into the game strongly trying to get back on equal terms. Vieira steered the ball wide from within the penalty area as Peterborough began to create chances. However Dunstable held firm and could feel rightly pleased with their first half performance as the referee blew the whistle for half time. A cold, biting wind with heavy rain blowing directly into the face was the unenviable task the Dunstable Town players faced in the second half as Peterborough kicked towards the far end. You didn’t need to be a genius to work out that Peterborough would need to push men forward to try and grab an equaliser.

In situations like that you hope that the guile and skill of the Dunstable frontmen, able to quickly turn their markers on the wet surface might not only bring some respite to the expected siege but also engineer a goal to make the game safe. It nearly happened. Twice. On the hour mark, Chris Wreh advanced at pace down the left hand side and with Arel Amu arriving clear to his right, the pass from Chris fell foul to the conditions and Peterborough cleared their lines. As the game headed towards it’s conclusion Arel Amu, on 85 minutes sent over an inviting cross for substitute Charlie Black to send a diving header crashing against the post and out of danger. At the other end Peterborough probed and searched for gaps in the Dunstable back line to exploit, but only once, in the 79th minute did they succeed and get through with Paul Malone getting the equaliser.

26 December 1999 - Chelsea Flows Over Southampton On 26 December 1999, Chelsea became the first British team to field an all-foreign starting XI. And it worked out pretty well for them. The occasion was a Premier League match against Southampton at the Dell. The lineup decision was not entirely in the hands of manager Gianluca Vialli, as a breakout of the flu deprived him of several regular selections, including striker Chris Sutton and midfielder Dennis Wise, both of whom were English internationals (Wise was the club’s player of the year in 1998). To fill in the gaps, Vialli fielded a starting eleven that consisted of Ed De Goey (Netherlands), Albert Ferrer (Spain), Frank Leboeuf (France), Emerson Thome (Brazil), Dan Petrescu

(Romania), Celestine Babyaro (Nigeria), Gus Poyet (Uruguay), Didier Deschamps (France), Roberto Di Matteo (Italy), Gabriele Ambrosetti (Italy), and Tore André Flo (Norway). It was the the first time in the history of British football that a team put out a starting line-up without a single British player. Chelsea went on to win 1-2, with Flo (pictured) scoring both of their goals (18’, 43’), while Southampton’s goal was an 80th-minute consolation strike from Kevin Davies. The all-international eleven ended in the 74th minute, when Vialli brought Englishman Jon Harley on for Ambrosetti (and then Jody Morris, another Englishman, came on for Petrescu in the 87th minute).
