DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 1

“management is a lonely job. i’m fortunate i have a great group of staff in Kyle durcan, Jamie nicholls, lee Cowley, anthony Christophi, adam ashton, and Joe reynolds but ultimately every decision lands at my door.”

Welcome to the management, players, supporters, and all those associated with Hoddesdon Town ahead of this afternoon’s clash. It is only a week and a half since we last played Hoddesdon at their ground in the reverse fixture. We won 1-0 on the day but it was a hard fought and difficult 3 points to get and I have no doubt today will prove to be another tough game for us.

Before I get into the game and our emphatic win on Tuesday night against Cockfosters, I want to begin by thanking the 134 brave souls for attending. It was freezing on Tuesday evening and still so many came out to support us all. The support has been fantastic and makes a huge difference. I am delighted about our 5-1 win and our lads certainly gave you all some excellent entertainment.

I have learned to enjoy wins much more which is something I have made a conscious effort to do. I have had the balance too wrong for too long. I take the defeats too hard and don’t enjoy the wins enough. I am certain I will never

be able to get used to losses so I may as well enjoy the wins. The advice is “Never too high, never too low” from experienced managers, but I must have missed that class when that advice was given out.

One thing I never allow myself to do is get carried away when things are going well. One invaluable lesson I’ve learned throughout my coaching and management career is the minute you think you have cracked it you crash very quickly and believe me there is no soft landing! I have mentioned it several times before but one of the biggest words in my coaching criteria is adaptability. It is critical to be able to adapt. We have showed an excellent ability to adapt for most of this season. We have been able to adapt systems with ease and adapt and deal with conditions, pitches, and weather amongst many things.

The need to be able to flip between systems is all about our ability to simply WIN. I never pick a system or players to nullify opponents, I always pick players

2 DUNSTABLE TOWN vs HODDESDON TOWN TH e m ANA ge R j O e D ee N e Y

and systems to expose the opposition weaknesses and most importantly WIN! I know I must have said WIN 100,000 times in the last couple of months but ultimately that is the only thing that is important to me.

I hate losing and whilst I have got marginally better at compartmentalising defeats, I never get used to that feeling! Winning football matches on the other hand is the most addictive feeling there is. If you could bottle that feeling of winning and sell it in pubs, bars and alcohol companies would go out of business.

Whilst the last 14 days have been great in terms of results, we all know that there is so much more to do and so much more to come. The last 2 weeks have really continued to reiterate my belief in my group and why I stay strong to my beliefs and don’t listen to outside noise. Management is a lonely job, ask any manager out there and they will tell you the same thing. I’m fortunate I have a great group of staff in Kyle Durcan, Jamie Nicholls, Lee Cowley, Anthony Christophi, Adam Ashton, and Joe Reynolds but ultimately every decision lands at my door.

My staff are great and are always seeking ways for us to improve but believe me we clash over things which is healthy. If I had listened to the 5,000 opinions a week, then our hat trick hero Kelvin Osei-Addo wouldn’t have been here. I have never stopped believing in Kelvin. It’s very easy for people to jump on the “Praise Kelvin” bandwagon now and he deserves huge credit. It was satisfyingly ironic it was another wonderful assist from Luke Dunstan who himself has been given too much unfair criticism that led to Kelvins hat trick. The faith I have had they are repaying, and I am sure that will continue!

I appreciate we all have opinions, and everyone is entitled to theirs. We are all on the same mission though and that is our common quest to win, and I love the passion we all share. Trust me, trust my staff and most importantly trust my players, we will do absolutely everything we can to ensure we keep winning!

I am immensely proud to be the Head Coach of this football club and work with the best people I’ve had the privilege of working with. Without our great Chairman and Directors, my great coaching staff, our players, the media and social media team, the programme editor, the 50/50 ticket sellers, our gate people, our kitman, our registrations secretary, our team sheet writers, our podcasters, our merchandise sellers, our sponsors, our owners, and fantastic supporters who follow us every single week we don’t have anything. Everyone is a part of the Dunstable Town family and believe me EVERY ONE of my players is desperate to do well.

We need everyone pulling in the same direction for the rest of the season. I love the passion and intensity we all have which matches my personality. All I want is for us all to support all my players. Any criticisms you have please always fire them at me. I’m the Head Coach, I’m big enough and thick skinned enough to take it. I have a mantra I’ll share with you all. When we win it’s all about my players, when we lose it’s all about me! If my players don’t play well, it’s because I haven’t used them correctly.

Let’s all hope at 5pm this evening we are celebrating another 3 points, but it certainly won’t be easy.

Enjoy today’s game.

DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 3

A very warm welcome to our opponents, Hoddesdon Town, who visit Creasey Park this afternoon. We look forward to reciprocating the wonderful hospitality we received on our visit to Lowfield, just over a week ago. We hope all their party have an enjoyable afternoon with us and have a safe journey home.

Tuesday marks the first anniversary of the death of Aaron Bateman. Aaron, as many of you will now have read or learned via different media sources, was killed by a pub doorman outside the Wheatsheaf pub on High Street North a year ago.

Along with several other Club volunteers I went to one of the sessions at Luton Crown Court to show my support for Ian & Charlotte.

The tragedy of the events of that evening were laid bare for all to witness. A senseless and mindless act of

aggression committed in the complete absence of provocation ended Aaron’s life and turned upside down the lives of his family, friends and loved ones.

They include several of our own Club volunteers who were with Aaron, Ian & Scottie that evening.

All bear witness, as do so many others here at the Club who knew him, of Aaron’s gentle nature, a kind word for everyone, and not a malicious, cruel, or prejudiced bone in his body.

A unanimous guilty of manslaughter brought by the jury has seen some of the darkness of the occasion replaced by shafts of light and when sentencing takes place on March 15th we trust that justice will be served and Aaron’s good name and good character fully restored.

We’ll be away at Harpenden Town that evening but supporters who want to

remember Aaron will be able to get into Creasey Park throughout the day to lay flowers at the Aaron Bateman stand or just pay silent respect in his honour. We’re very grateful to James Slack & his staff team for allowing people to remember Aaron in this dignified manner.

Tuesday night saw us complete our fourth successive victory, with a comprehensive and well deserved victory over Cockfosters. Kelvin Osei-Addo leapfrogged his way into becoming the Club’s top goal scorer this season with a first half hat trick. Danny Webb’s decisive fourth goal was worth the price of admission itself and Dylan Baker nearly broke the net such was the ferocity of his thunderbolt right at the end.

It was a cold night but even then, the lads were well supported by a noisy crowd of 134 which was higher than five of the eight Step 4 games played on Saturday.

It means we go into today’s game in 5th place, seven points behind leaders, Stotfold, but with two games in hand. The next five weeks sees us play twice a week on Tuesday & Saturday. There are some “six pointers” in the mix there, particularly away fixtures at Leighton Town, Crawley Green & on the very last day of the season at Stotfold.

The Autumn hiccup, results wise, hit us hard with injuries and suspensions seeming to come all together. Without wishing to tempt fate, Joe has pretty much a full squad to choose from, although Manny & Kyle Faulkner have

both picked up knocks, but the very good news is that Terrence Muchineripi is back at training on Thursday nights. Adam has him building up his fitness so no ball work yet but how wonderful it would be to see Terrence back in a blue shirt before season end.

The Club were pleased to announce that U18s Captain, Axel Piesold, had signed for Luton Town & sat on the bench for his new club in their away match against Grimsby Town on Tuesday night. Axel captained our U18s at the start of the season and featured for the first team at the end of last season and during preseason. His accomplished performance in the away victory at Ardley Utd on the last day of the season, won the 17 year old a deserved Man of the Match award.

We wish Axel all the very best with the Hatters and pay tribute to his coaches in our U18s who have nurtured his talent and allowed him to develop and facilitated his move to our Championship neighbours.

Thank you as always for your support today, be loud, be proud but please be respectful of our opponents and our match officials.

We look forward to seeing you all next Saturday when Leverstock Green are our opponents, but before then, please remember Aaron for the wonderful young man, and passionate supporter of DTFC that he was.

“In spite of it all, life is beautiful.”

The club was established on 14 April 1879 as Hoddesdon Football Club. In 1885 they were founding members of the Hertfordshire County Football Association and won the inaugural Herts Senior Cup in 1886–87. The club retained the cup the following season and won it again in 1889–90. They were founder members of the East Herts League in 1896, merging with Hoddesdon Wanderers and Broxbourne Club in the same year. In 1903 the club absorbed another club, Rye Park.

The club is thought to have initially played at Mansers Field, although by 1882 they had moved to Lowfield. Lowfield had previously been home to a cricket club, which continue to play there. The ground was originally an arable field owned by Robert Barclay, who donated the land and was in-volved in setting up the cricket club in 1879. The site was purchased by a trust in 1924, before being taken over the urban district council, with ownership later transferring to Broxbourne Borough Council. Between 1952 and 1954 the club played at Essex Road as the Lowfield site was being lev-elled to allow for separate cricket and football pitches.

Floodlights were installed in 1973 and inaugurated with a friendly match with West Ham United on 7 March, a game that attracted a record crowd of 3,500. The football pitch was moved further south in the early 1980s to prevent overlapping with the cricket oval, with floodlight pylons having to be moved and the original 100-seat stand now being at one end of the pitch rather than on the halfway line; in 1996 it was discovered to

contain significant amounts of asbestos and was condemned. A new stand was opened the same year and seats from Burnden Park were installed the following year. A 100-capacity covered stand was opened in 2014 and another 50-seat stand was installed in 2016.

In 1908 Hoddesdon joined the Eastern Division of the Hertfordshire Senior County League. The division was renamed the Central Division for the 1909–10 season, before reverting to its former name the following season. The club finished bottom of the division in 1912–13 but were divisional champions the following season. In the interdivisional championship play-off, they finished last. In 1920 the club was renamed Hoddesdon Town. They were placed in the North-East Division for the 1921–22 season following league organisation, before the league was reduced to a single division in 1923.

Hoddesdon joined Division Two B the Spartan League in 1925. They won the division in 1928–29, but league reorganisation meant no promotion and the club was placed in Division Two East the following season. They were Division Two East runners-up in 1931–32, earning promotion to Division One. The 1935–36 season saw the club win Division One, resulting in promotion to the Premier Division. However, they finished second-from-bottom of the Premier Division the following season and were relegated back to Division One. After World War II the club were placed in the Central Division for the 1945–46 season, with a sixth-place finish seeing them earn a place in

DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 11 TH e HISTORY

the Premier Division for the following season.

Hoddesdon were relegated after finishing bottom of the table in 1949–50 but were promoted back to the Premier Division at the first attempt. They finished bottom of the table in 1958–59, 1959–60 and 1962–63, but were runners-up in 1964–65 and went on to win the league title in 1970–71, a season that also saw them win the Spartan League Cup and the Herts Charity Shield. The club were league runners-up in the next three seasons, retaining the League Cup and the Charity Shield in 1971–72. In 1974–75 they were the first-ever winners of the FA Vase, beating Epsom & Ewell in its inaugural final at Wembley Stadium. The club left the Spartan League to the Athenian League in 1977, but when the league was disbanded in 1984, they were refused entry to the Isthmian League as they did not have use of their Lowfield ground all year round, and instead joined the Premier Division of the South Midlands League.

In 1985–86 Hoddesdon won the South Midlands League Challenge Trophy, retaining it the following season and winning it again in 1991–92. The club remained in the Premier Division until 1997 when the league merged with the

Spartan League to form the Spartan South Midlands League, with Hoddesdon placed in the Premier Division North for a transitional season; a fifth-place finish in the league’s first season saw them earn a place in the Premier Division the following season; the season also saw them win the Premier Division Plate. In 2004–05 Hoddesdon finished bottom of the Premier Division and were relegated to Division One. A third-place finish in 2012–13 saw them promoted back to the Premier Division.

Manager Paul Halsey walked out in January 2017, and after a short spell of interim management, Simon Riddle took over and was appointed for 2018/19. A final place of twelfth in the table was a relief after much player turbulence over 2 or 3 months. After the season ended, the Club learned it had been moved laterally to the Essex Senior League, thus ending a 34-year association with the (Spartan) South Midlands League. A full appeal hearing at the FA failed to have the decision reversed. Former Club Treasurer and stalwart supporter, Bob Parker, passed away at the age of 93 in May 2018.

An historic season for the Club as the First Team took its place in the 20-club Essex Senior League. Having reached

the semi-finals of the Peter Butcher Memorial Trophy the First Team lost 2-1 to a very strong Barkingside Reserves side, but the Final was not played due to issues that occurred in the other semifinal.

Thanks to Covid-19 the season was declared null and void in late March, with the Lilywhites in seventh place in the table. One of the FA Vase Final stars, Les Picking, passed away in March 2020. The First Team also lost out on a chance to make the Challenge Trophy semi-finals when their thrice-postponed quarter final tie became a victim of the pandemic.

2020-21 was another season affected by Covid-19 with two lockdowns. Only thirteen League and eight cup games played, four of those in the Len Cordell Memorial Cup/Plate, the Lilywhites winning the latter 3-0 in the Final against Woodford Town. A new pitch rail was constructed around three sides of the pitch to upgrade the ground even further.

Roger Merton stepped down as Chairman after 26 years in the role, and he was replaced by Stuart Varney. After a poor Covid-19 affected start to the season, the First Team picked up in the second half and finished in 15th place. Having reached the semi-finals of the Errington Challenge Trophy they were beaten 3-0 by a very good Enfield side. Following the season end the Club was informed it was being moved back to the Spartan South Midlands League for the 2022/23 campaign following two full and two truncated seasons in the Essex Senior League.

34 DUNSTABLE TOWN vs HODDESDON TOWN
DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 35

The Blues started slow and went a goal down giving the ball away cheaply. This lead to a long ball over the top and the Blues didn’t reacted quick enough, which lead to the Stopsley striker getting through one on one with Blues keeper George Lewington. The striker calmly slotted underneath George to go 1-0 up.

Both sides were cancelling each other but the Blues started to boss the midfield and soon found themselves 2-1 ahead with two free kicks from Cairon.

Half time came at the right time and Wayne Upton had the boys run in quickly so they could get things ironed out so they could start better in the second half.

The boys played some better football but the defence had to be at the races with the Stopsley centre forward, who was always dangerous but Blues defender Lewis Sharp marshalled him very well. A few long ranged shots from

Stopsley were collected with ease from George, and the game was put to bed with the Blues being awarded a penalty. Up stepped Liam McTague who blasted it past the keeper to make it 3-1.

Stopsley huffed and puffed but couldn’t break through the Blues defence. Tthe fourth goal came and killed the game off with a well-deserved goal from Naishayn Williams who never stopped running all game. The game was not quite over as Stopsley were awarded a penalty for a clumsy challenge which lead to the Stopsley striker beating George from the spot.

The last five minutes were a bit tense, but the whistle finally went and the Blues completed the double over the league leaders and are now 1 point behind them with a game in hand. Next week at Creasey we see the Blues take on Ampthill Town.

It’s been a while since we’ve had an update on the Dunstable Town Invitational Fantasy League and as we hit week 23, we see a few changes in the leading pack.

AFC Crilldog have dropped a few places to 7th, whereas Dan Rhodes Aubamacare have crept up to 3rd from 6th place.

After successful walks to Leverstock Green, Harpenden and Tring, we are planning two more this season, totalling approximately 100km.

You can join us on as many as you wish and help us raise some funds for the club, to continue our work within the local community, and for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust and the OLLIE Foundation.

www.crowdfunder.co.uk/p/dtfc2

All walks will leave Creasey Park on a matchday and plan to arrive in time for a well-earned pint (or few)
