By Kristine Coulter Village of Fishkill restaurants and bars have been preparing for Phase 2. On Saturday, June 6, Village of Fishill Mayor James Miccio held a meeting with local restaurant owners. “The Village’s position is we’re going to do everything we can to help them,” said Miccio. North Street will be closed at the Main Street entrance - there will be tables for outdoor accommodations. The hours of closure will be daily Mondays - Fridays from 5-9 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays all day. The rear parking lots will be accessible from Academy St. “Village [officials] recognize we need to help our businesses. They stepped up in that regard,” said Michael Hayden. Hayden has owned The White House Bar for more than 30 years. Hayden said, “The Village really ‘opened up the doors to opening,’ so to speak.” He noted the village is allowing, for now, sidewalk cafes and not charging the usual fee as in the past. Miccio confirmed there are no fees for sidewalks cafes. “These people have been closed up for months,” noted the mayor. Miccio said he wants to get cash flowing to the businesses in the village. Asked what the past few months have been like as a business owner, Hayden, who is also a member of the Fishkill Business Association, replied, “It’s been non-existent as a business owner.” He said he has been paying the bills as best as best he can. “In the meantime, I have done some renovations,” he noted. Hayden said one of the projects he has wanted to do for a while was extend the bar. That is what he did during the NY PAUSE shutdown because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Late last week, after hearing Phase 2 was scheduled for June 9, he has been preparing. Hayden said he will stick to the guidelines put forth by the state and

As for patrons and outside dining, said Hayden, one can remove their masks seated at a table and only with their group. Continued on page 3

DC Fair canceled for only 4th time in history By Curtis Schmidt Sue and Mark Adams remember their first date at the Dutchess County Fair. For Harry Baldwin, it's an end-of-summer tradition to renew old friendships. And Dick Whalen loves competing with Harry Baldwin to have the first cows at the fair on Sunday mornings. The Dutchess County Fair means so much to so many individuals. With agriculture at its heart, it has been the centerpiece of fairgrounds events for 174 years. But not this year. This year, that beloved event will be yet another casualty of the current COVID-19 pandemic, but with resilient plans to return next year. With an abundance of caution and emphasis on safety, Fair President/CEO Andy Imperati announced County officials join members of the Board of on Wednesday, June 3, that the 175th Dutchess County Fair has been canceled and will return on Aug. 24-29, Directors of the Dutchess County Agricultural Society 2021. This is only the fourth time in 174 years that the in cutting the ribbon to open the Welcome Center at fair has been canceled. the DC Fair in 2017.

By Kristine Coulter Business owners throughout the county and state are getting ready as the dates for the different phases to reopen are scheduled. Among those business owners taking steps and getting ready, are members of the Fishkill Business Association (FBA). “The motto of the FBA is "Think Local. Very Local." During this unprecedented time, it is more important than ever for people to shop locally. Small businesses are struggling; several of our members have had to close their businesses permanently, myself included. More will find it hard to reopen when the pause ends. When you shop at your local businesses you are helping your friends, neighbors and community succeed. Our communities thrive when our businesses thrive. In order for our communities to successfully come back from the pandemic, it is imperative that our local businesses lead the way,” said Michele MercadoChimkin, FBA President. Madelyn Raum owns Chic Hair Salon and Spa at 1081 Main St, in Fishkill. She opened the salon eight years ago on June 4. Raum said, “They’ll be no more than three stylists in the salon at one time.” She said the stations will be socially distant, even more so than before the pandemic. There will be a see-through divider used at the front desk station. For shampooing, there are three sinks, but the middle one will not be used. Clear shower curtains will be used, too for the shampoo station area, she noted. All stylists will use face masks, said Raum. She also added that clients will be required to use hand sanitizer and wear face masks. There are no walk-in appointments at this time. It is by scheduled appointment only, said Raum, who is following required state guidelines. She also said clients are being asked not to bring guests to their appointments. Raum encouraged her older clients to make appointments first thing in the morning, since they are part of the most vulnerable population. Raum purchased UV sanitizers for brushes and equipment. All equipment will be sanitized she said. Chairs will be wiped down after each appointment with sanitizer. Barbicide, specifically designed to clean and disinfect salons, will be used, too. Appointments have 30 minutes in between so they can sanitize what is required. “I’m encouraging clients to wait until appointment times and not to arrive 10 minutes early,” remarked Raum. As for how the pandemic and NY PAUSE affected her, she said, “It’s been a mixed bag, if you will.” She noted as an owner the most difficult part was making sure bills are covered. “I was not going to let this beat me,” Raum remarked.
