NOTE

KMS COMMUNICATIONS

A computer functioning as a KMS host must allow traffic through TCP port 1688. Be sure to configure any firewalls to allow this traffic.

Once the KMS host is installed and configured, and its host key activated, it is ready to activate clients on the network. Which products the KMS host is capable of activating—and which operating systems can function as the KMS host—depends on the host key itself. When you enter into a volume licensing agreement with Microsoft, you specify which operating systems you intend to run, as well as how many computers you intend to deploy, and Microsoft provides you with a KMS host key for the appropriate volume product group. For clients to connect to a KMS host, they must be able to find it, and they do this by using the Domain Name System (DNS). Once the KMS host is activated, it creates an SRV resource record that identifies the computer as such. The KMS clients on the network can then find the host by performing standard DNS queries.

Configuring KMS clients Volume licensed editions of Windows, such as the Enterprise editions, use KMS to activate the operating system by default. After a mass deployment of these operating systems, authentication occurs automatically as long as the clients can locate and connect to an operational KMS host. If you have computers running Windows editions that are not KMS clients by default, such as computers with retail, MAK, or KMS host licenses, you can configure them to be KMS clients by giving them generic volume licensing keys (GVLKs) published by Microsoft.

Active Directory-based activation In Windows Server 2012 and Windows 8, Microsoft introduced a third volume activation method, called Active Directory-based activation. Active Directory-based activation is essentially similar to KMS, except that it uses Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) for communication and data storage instead of a KMS host. Once you have configured your AD DS forest to provide Active Directory-based activation, computers with GVLKs are activated automatically when they join the domain. Active Directory can only activate licenses for Windows Server 2016, Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows Server 2012, Windows 10, Windows 8.1, Windows 8, and any newer Windows versions. For earlier Windows versions, such as Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7, you must use a standard KMS host or MAK licenses. To support Active Directory-based activation, you must have at least one domain controller running Windows Server 2016, Windows Server 2012 R2, or Windows Server 2012, and Skill 1.1: Install, upgrade, and migrate servers and workloads
