EXAM TIP

When preparing for the 70-740 exam, keep in mind that Storage Migration and Live Migration are separate processes. In Hyper-V Manager, the Move Wizard integrates Live Migration and Storage Migration capabilities into one interface, which can be confusing. Using this wizard, you can move a virtual machine to a different Hyper-V host; you can move a VM’s storage, while leaving the VM in place; or you can move both the VM and its storage to a different host, effectively combining Live Migration and Storage Migration. Remember, however, that these are two separate tools and two separate procedures, although the wizard makes it seem as though it is one process.

In this dialog box, you can select any of the virtual machine’s stored resources, including individual VHD and VHDX files, checkpoints, and Smart Paging files, and drag and drop them to a location anywhere in cluster storage. A new Destination Folder Path value appears, specifying to where the tool will move the file. When you have selected destinations for all of the files you want to move, you can click the Start button to close the dialog box and begin the storage migration process.

Import, export, and copy VMs In Hyper-V, the ability to export and import VMs has several useful purposes. It is a simple, although tedious, way to move a VM from one host to another, complete with all its virtual hard disk, checkpoint, and Smart Paging files, without the prerequisites needed for Live Migration or Quick Migration. It is also a way to copy—or clone— a virtual machine, with all its updates, configuration settings, and applications intact.
