The time is right for the French star to step up and take the bull by the horns so to speak and come out fighting for this year’s MXGP world title.

Over the last few months Paulin has been living in the USA preparing with trainer Aldon Baker at his place in Florida alongside Ryan Dungey and Marvin Musquin, having spoke to him in California, Gautier explained, he never went home for Christmas preferring to stay on the West Coast and put in the laps in the sunshine.

It’s time to shine on the HRC Honda, the Japanese factory would go bat shit crazy if he took the world crown.

Hawkstone Banger The 2016 outdoor season started with

a huge crowd at the Annual Be Wiser Hawkstone International. Thousands braved the cold and damp conditions to watch some of the best riders on the planet race here in the UK. KTM’s Jeffrey Herlings proved his long layoff hasn’t hampered his speed and our very own Shaun Simpson showed he can mix it with any of his MXGP rivals - 2016 looks promising.

We catch up with one of the UK’s most talented young riders, Eddie Jay Wade. Eddie who is based in Spain but travels across to race the Thor British Youth Nationals - a busy lad to say the least.

Before we start are you in the SW85 class again this year or moving to the BW85 class?

“I will be moving to the big wheel class a year early, in the Spanish Nationals there are only B/W so to be competitive I have to make the switch.”

2016 was an impressive year for sure, even though you just missed out on the BYN British championship. What’s your plans for 2016?

“For 2016 the main plan was the Europeans, but my first round clashes with the first round of the BYN so its still a little up in the air at the moment. I will be competing in the Spanish National series again which has an incredibly fast line up. And maybe wild card a few other races in the UK in the summer, but when I am not racing we normally go jet skiing.”

What did you learn from last year which will help you in 2016?

“I learn’t how to cope with disappointment and that only makes me more determined to do well, and a little bit of luck on your side also helps.”

The off season seems like an eternity, apart from the indoor racing, what have you been upto in preparation for the 2016 Thor British Youth Nationals starting in April?

“I look forward to the off season, the bike is parked up after my last race normally in October and I don’t touch it again until the new year when RMJ comes out to Spain with his boot camp. I do other things like Skateboarding, push bike riding, football, surfing while the weather is still warm here, and enjoying being able to spend time with my mates.”

Have you a new bike deal this year or are you staying with Husqvarna?

“Staying Husqvarna it’s an incredible machine straight out of the box I love it.”

as I mentioned already the supercross has been outstanding and a joy to watch, ryan dungey has been riding impeccably in the 450’s and Cooper Webb who sometimes grinds a little on fans with his attitude is on another level in the 250 class, very impressive.

With the MXGp season only 2 weeks away with the first round being in floodlit Qatar, all eyes will be on tony Cairoli who is currently sidelined with a rib injury, can the 8 time world champion regain his championship from the impressive 2015 MXGp World Champion romain Febvre or can someone like Clement desalle finally find himself at the top of the points table come september 11? as the old saying goes you can’t win the championship at round 1 but you can certainly lose it.

supercross One of the best parts about visiting California is without doubt a trip to the Supercross. Depending on the time of year you visit and how long you stay for, its possible to visit more than one race, if you can, do it, as you wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t regret it.

Incredible day out watching some of the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s best racing bar to bar. The whole show from start to finish is just incredible - the Americans certainly know how to put on an event.

/02 Over the last 10 years of so, California Ride vacations companies have been popping up and disappearing on a yearly basis - probably not good for anyone. There is one company who without doubt stands head and shoulders above everyone else and has been around for a long time, Ride California. //brits abroad Over the last 10 years or so the number of British riders taking the option to ride the winter months in California is incredible. Top Maxxis riders such as Tommy Searle, Mel Pocock, Max Anstie and Bryan Mackenzie have spent time riding in the sunshine. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not just proâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s either, many youth and clubman riders are moving in the same direction and taking up the option to ride in the USA.

Having made the decision to race the East Coast championship which starts on February 27 at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, this gave him more time to prepare and gets things right instead of rushing back for the West Coast and not being 100%.

Making the decision to wait until the East Coast is definitely beneficial for the body and mind, this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s East Coast is stacked with talent, even with teammate Adam Cianciarulo missing with yet another injury, Tyler is going to need all his speed and talent to claim the 250 title in 2016. /023/

“It all comes natural after you’ve practiced it so many times. I’ve worked on new techniques and at the moment it seems to be going good!

You have to be 100% concentrated and when the technique is perfect, you will have a good start. In previous years I’ve not been a great starter but it’s something I’ve thought a lot about lately. I think of the start as being 50% of my race. It’s the only place you can pass 39 riders in one corner. My start went well at Hawkstone and I’m hoping for more of the same in future races.”

Track Considering the awful weather in the build up to Hawkstone, the track held up pretty well.

The whole event could have easily been cancelled midweek due to the amount of rain they had, but the the track guys did a great job, so hats off to them.

Jeffrey Herlings After a horrendous year out with injury, the Dutch wonderkid made his yearly homage to Hawkstone and certainly didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t disappoint.

Winning all races including the combined final with MX1 riders. The fans were mad for him as usual.

Commentary The dulcet tones of Jack Burnicle and Paul Malin kept the crowd absorbed in their knowledge and information about riders, teams and what was going on in the races throughout the day - a good pairing for sure.

Shaun Simpson New team for Shaun in 2016 with Wilvo Virus Performance KTM and backed with Factory engines straight from Austria.

He didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t disappoint with an overall victory in the MX1 class against the likes of Clement Desalle, Ben Townley and Kevin Strijbos.

Organisation Same can be said for the organisers, the crowd was huge and the weather was still cold. The guys kept the event running smoothly throughout the day, with very little if any problems.

Ben Townley Making his return to MXGP racing with Suzuki in 2016 is Kiwi Ben Townley. Looking very much like the silky smooth Townley of old, Ben did enough for third overall and showed thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s life in the old dog yet.

The Crowd Brilliant crowd considering the weather in the build up to the event. To start the 2016 season in this way is a huge bonus and positive move for British motocross - long may it continue.

/Pre-Season Shakedown/

The pre-season events have seen a number of championship contenders head to the warmer climates of the Italian Championship, like the Buildbase Honda team (minus Kristian Whatley due to a foot injury) and Ifly JK Yamaha pairing along with Tanel Leok and all managed to produce some impressive results against a number of Factory GP riders and top Internationals.

On the home front the Be Wiser Hawkstone International provided a chance to shake off the cobwebs and although the British weather tried itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hardest to ruin the event, race day saw some great action and once again reign MX1 champion Shaun Simpson proved he is settling in well with his new team, the Wilvo Virus Performance KTM team and his victory in the MX1 class, against Clement Desalle, Ben Townley and Kevin Strijbos proved he is in great shape.

onship gets ready for action_ With less than a month until the Maxxis Championship fires back into life at the traditional sand circuit of Lyng in Norfolk all riders and teams will be putting the final touches on their pre-season preparations ready for that all important gate drop.

/Return of Bad Brad/ One rider who came out swinging at Hawkstone was former double British Champion Brad Anderson, during the winter months the fan favourite signed with the Verde KTM team and the Northerner already looks very much at home on the KTM 450 and enjoying life within the new team. The results on track saw a determined Anderson take an early race lead and even a small crash and stall wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t stop Anderson from claiming second behind Desalle and ahead of a charging Simpson in the opening race. This was followed up with a sixth place finish after recovering from a first corner crash proving that Anderson and the KTM could once again be a title contender.

/Young Guns get Younger/ With the MXY2 class competing at all rounds of the Maxxis Championship for the first time in 2016, it will be interesting to watch the UKâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s future stars looking to impress. One rider sure to turn many heads during the year will be 15 year old Jack Bintcliffe. After nearly missing out on the European Honda 150 Championship last year the youngster has since transferred onto the Honda 250f and came out of the blocks flying at Hawkstone taking pole position in qualifying and then going on to finish 2, 4, 4 to take third overall in his major event on an MX2 machine.

/Watson Comes out Strong/ Another rider to produce a strong showing at the Hawkstone International was Ben Watson who has seen his Hitachi Construction Revo Team switch from KTM to Husqvarna machinery during the winter.

When the gate dropped for the opening race Watson fired around the first turn ahead of the pack and would go on to finish third in the opening race, fifth in the second race while being the second MX2 rider across the line in the Superfinal.

Before his injury at last years Spanish GP, Dylan was looking quick and even won a race at the GP of Argentina.

His temperament needs to be right and he needs to want to win, if both fall into place Dylan may well be the closest rider to Jeffrey Herlings throughout the season.

evgeny bobryshev The Russian Bullet has been dogged with injuries over the last few years, 2016 will be his time to shine. Superb bike with the HRC Honda and just like Herlings, when Bobby is at full steam heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s very very fast.

It’s like a huge guessing game, we all try to show that we have the knowledge and understanding of who’s going to do what in the championship but in hindsight it really is a guessing game. So here’s our choice of riders to watch in 2016, I’m sure we’ll get it exactly spot on with our predictions - cos we’re ace.

ROMAIN FEBVRE This kid looked quite good last year, so much so he won the MXGP world championship. Injury free he could repeat the feat but he needs to be 100% focused on the job. Let’s just hope the pressure doesn’t get to him - he will certainly have a bullseye on his back for sure.

When he’s on it Jeffrey is probably the fastest man in MX2 anywhere in the world. Wonderful to see the two time world champion back and looking as fast and as hungry as he ever did he’s definitely the man to beat in 250 class.

So Stuart, what’s been going on in the life of Disco70 since you retired?

Well after a short stint in New Zealand where I managed to win a title as their Open 4-stroke Champion in 2006, I then went over to have a go at beating the Aussies. While practicing one day with Cody Cooper and some other top guys over there I had a major collision with a crashed rider which resulted in me breaking nearly every bone in my right foot. This unfortunately put an end to my pro racing days. When I came home and recovered from that I decided I wanted to focus on helping other riders improving themselves and how they train , so got myself registered as a licenced MX Coach and started passing on my advice and passion for the sport through coaching .

And the future, how do you see it panning out?

Having nearly ten years of coaching under my belt I’m now trying to offer more of an all round package to benefit the motocross rider. With my training groups, riders on private lessons, weekly boot camps where I’ve had loads of dudes come stay with me, trips abroad to ride different tracks in better weather, and I run an awesome practice facility in central Scotland where my better half Louise runs a Cafe and a parts shop. I also have some big name guys who ride with me too on private Pro sessions where we use my championship level MyLaps/AMB transponder timing system to keep them on their toes and work those lap times. While all this is going on I also have my son Troy starting to show interest in taking riding more serious which is great to be a part of and I get to re-live it all again. So, throw all this in the pot and yeah I’m working pretty hard within the UK mx scene with ideas to keep me and my riders climbing that ladder!

food hat If it’s cold I’ll be rocking a beanie. I hate having a cold head and ears.

I think it’s from years of wearing a helmet, my head needs to be warm.

If it’s warm I’ll probably be rocking a snapback.

You gotta keep the body fuelled. I eat 5 smaller meals per day so if I’m heading out the door for a prolonged period I’ll pack a box of food making sure I’m still eating healthy while I’m out and about.

iphone Like most people these days my iPhone is almost attached to my side. It’s important for me to have it with me to keep my social media fresh, keep in contact with my team and stay in touch with my family and friends.
