Preface
The world’s leading home decor magazine, Elle Decor manifests a philosophy of “Turning dreams into reality” and it certainly did mine during my internship period at the publication’s Indian edition. What commenced as a requirement to making my graduation ends meet transitioned into an enriching educational experience at the industry level that I am abundantly grateful for.
I would like to express my gratitude towards Mrs. Arshiya Kapoor, head of the Fashion Design Department at MAEER’S MIT-Institute of Design, Pune for her mentorship and guidance towards the completion of my design project. My thanks to Shriti Das, Managing Editor of Elle Decor-India for recommending my candidacy towards the monumental opportunity that brought the coffee table book together, and Pratishtha Rana, Senior Features Writer for her unfailing advice and auspices throughout the publication’s process.
Homebody welds the worlds of Editorial and Interior Design, a sine qua non, essential for every design firm in the country as afflatus, archive or inspiration. The book unfurls a prismatic picture of extraordinary and enticing residential projects by the accomplished and ambitious architects from all over India.

A home narrates the story of who you are, and illustrates a curation of what you love. The very essence of home interiors and design has and will always be about the people and not their paraphernalia.
Unveiling an exclusive publication that will serve as the ultimate homemaker’s guide to interior design and decor inspiration, ‘homebody’ is a motley melange that unearths the distinct design stories of unique homes from all over the country.
Headlining home features from the magazine’s digital platform by dint of glimpses and gists, the limited-edition coffee table book celebrates the authentic character and essence of Elle Decor-India as an institution.

10/155 Pied-à-terrePrimitiveThe This Vadodara home by The Crossboundaries exemplifies modern minimalism

11/155
Effortlessly capturing the essence of outdoor-to-indoor spaces, this 5,200 sq ft family home based in Manjalpur area of Vadodara has a riveting story to tell. Designed by Harsh Boghani, Founder, The Crossboundaries and his team, the villa is a lush example of a modernist residential lifestyle, with a touch of tradition veiled cleverly within its ornamentation. Rebuilt to fit the upgraded needs of a family of four, the home stands on a 2,900 sq ft plot of familiar familial land. With this project, the Boghani was incurred liberty and room to venture in any direction with only the client’s exclusive instruction of crafting a comfortable and spacious design.
The villa predominantly exhibits an elaborate and exorbitant expression of material. Stretched from foyer to terrace, inviting passage into the house is a cavity wall dressed from top to bottom in black Kadappa stone accentuating the verticality of the structure. Upon entrance, welcomes you a grand 10-foot door inclusive of a linear tinted grey mirror throughout and a slit fixed with clear glass, conferring it centerpiece of the architectural facade. The entryway opens up to an eclectic initial impression, displaying Lord Mahaveer cast in Situ wall art.
“This home is an exploration of minimalism, but through raw and naturally textured materials. In a way, it is a bit of contemporary minimalism as its soul as well as a search for textures, surface finishes and rawness in materials.” explains Boghani.

13/155

Past it stands the compelling kitchen finished off with handsome surfaces and shine and donned in Pristine white and Azure blue paints by Asian Paints Royal.
The open floor plan of the space seamlessly transitioning one heart of the house to another, complements the colossal openings built into the wall admirably. Thereupon extending the living room towards the garden at the entrance, allowing sweeping amounts of natural light in.
14/155
Within the vicinity of the living room, a diverse variety of shapes, colours, and textures amalgamate impeccably accomplishing utopian harmony. Raised 12-foot high ceilings carrying solely dim-able profile lights throughout, provide the accompanying space with a muted-clean canvas for chance in play of vibrant contrast with decor. Green Kota stone and subtle tints of grey and pink strike contraposition with the loud and splashy furnishings in the space.
Neighbouring the strategically stationed concrete staircase is a levitated 9-foot wide white Wimborne table that alters the perspective of this stretch to map off an expanded look, in return adding a tad bit of lightness to the spot.
15/155

The material library of the parent’s suite displays wooden furnishings and exposed concrete ceilings that add a fresh flavour of design. Ornate, nominal art planted next to a crescent-inspired lamp on the wall brings forth a contemporary, perceptible factor to the room’s arrangement.
Advancing the outdoor-to-indoor concept, a day bed around the corner with broad windows bring in adequate fix of natural light. A vivid variance to the rest of the residence, the younger son’s bedroom’s creative is expressed with a brazen hit of bold blacks and gorgeous greys. A light, white desk submits to the white walls faultlessly.
An enticing entertainer’s den monopolises the second floor, soundproofed with acoustically administered walls that are both an optical and auditory treat. The walls maintain a linear demeanour running through all spheres of the villa. An avocado green couch balances with the deep blue wall elevating the entire visage. Amidst the chaos of colors, an airy suspended bar unit falls into place fluently.
Across the first level is the elder son’s primary bedroom floored in green Kota stone in Galicha pattern. Peaches, greys, and other illusive tints add a crisp, young filter to the visual. Fitting in the artful and functional design story, a foldable desk conveniently takes up little space in the room.

Hints of modernity align with heritage of Rajasthan in this Mumbai home by Studio Septray
HaveliHeritage

Elevated into a lavish home rich with a legion of arcade space, it abides by a patulous plan and a balanced vastu.
19/155
A classic construction compassed with medley of contemporary components, the residence displays a playful material palette of neutral marble paired with veneer.
Nestled in the heart of Mumbai in Matunga is this home that poses like an intimate haveli-like haven for a Rajasthani family Covering an area of 1,500 sq ft, this 3.5 BHK address is a feat of impeccable design planning by Kiran Mistry, founder and Principal Designer of Studio Septray.
Polyurethane-coated white walls, gold elements, and arty combinations of glass and wood offer a vanilla canvas to the punch of colour embodied in the form of art and decor.
Cultured with ornate design facets shaped from traditional Rajasthani architecture, the home meets the family’s brief to draw a connection to their native state Mistry says, “Rajasthan is known for its beautiful architecture, motifs, vibrant colours and art. Each of these elements acted as my base to develop the design and that’s how the space came alive with a blend of all these.”
An arched window frame crafted strategically outlines a charming city view while delivering an abundance of natural light into the home Ornated to perfection with details, the TV unit entails arched niches, textured wallpaper, and velvet cladding exemplifying a hint of luxury in the house’s decor.
At first glimpse, the living area constructs a visional harmony between classical and contemporary design elements. An arch frame on a recessed royal blue wall with hand-painted gold art is sure to capture the observer’s eye.
Parted by a gold laser-cut jaali inspired by rooted Rajasthani patterns, the view from the entryway grants the spectator a peek into the main living space of the home.
A warm wooden lounge chair with detailed golden legs and hand rest edges and a royal gold chandelier radiating prominence furnish a fine finish to the space. This is the designer’s one of the favourite spots.
20/155
Subtle slabs of beige marble flooring laid throughout paired with minimal high ceilings forge a balanced contrast to the vibrant adornment welcoming the guests indoors.

Painted in the time-honoured colours of Rajasthan with a split complementary scheme of blue, green, reds and yellows is the open dining space. A modernistic one-piece Makrana Marble dining table supported with gold legs is a refreshing moderate member in the chromatic setting. The master suite embraces earthy tones with hints of dusty pink and bottle green within its palette. A muted beige bed with a tufted backrest and a wooden wardrobe completed with a veneer finish bring in a touch of warmth into the room. Fixings like gold trimmings including metal patti, handles on the furniture as well as antique glass hanging lights bring in a posh impact reminiscent of Rajasthani architecture.
Moving further in, the son’s bedroom entails subtle texture, lighter wood, and monochromatic decor. The parent’s room emanates expressions of traditional aesthetics. Ancestral features such as a carved wooden headboard with an arc and a jaali, floral mint green wallpaper and arch niche detail accompany an art frame of a bedroom in the City Palace of Udaipur

Steeped in the joyful demeanour and affectionate moods, the house is customised such so as to echo the singularity and styles of the individuals that at the end of the day becomes a snug place for the family to come back to.
Whispering stories of its family’s roots while crafting a dimensional charm of mid-century and modern aesthetics, House of Weaves stands as a 4-BHK apartment in the heart of Mumbai and the commercial locale of BKC.
Beautifully put together by Disha Bhavsar and Shivani Ajmera, Co-founders of Quirk Studio, this 1,950 sq ft space is a three-generational residence that exhibits an intriguing narrative of the homeowners and their sentiments.
The principal designer sought to craft a space that would reflect the owner’s quirks and quintessence with veracity. The textile palette performs an elemental role experimenting with a designed harmony of finishes that display in dexterous forms in all quarters of the apartment.
27/155
Upon entrance, a wood and cane screen cum console installation sections the introductory area of the home, rendering a sense of silent privacy to the foyer from the formal living area. The open floor plan, a collective blueprint of the construction, allows the sunlight to flood in the turns and corners of the home.
A theme of wood, marble, classic moulding details, and highlights of colour embodied in textured upholstery create a calm and composed marriage for the material library of the flat.

In the dining area, a built-in fluted fascia hutch unit with a marble lined-niche balances visual harmony with the marble table-top and flooring choice. Contrasting dual-toned chairs flaunt a deep blue damask pattern in combination with ivory, fashioning a welcoming tenor to the area.
Immersed in dappled sunlight falling through bamboo blinds, the daughter’s bedroom graces hues and art with sensitive restraint. The room is adorned with the user’s best finds as an art connoisseur.
A charming candelabra-style chandelier hikes a tone of ritz to the formal living space. Neutral-toned cushy furniture is infused with whiffs of deep blue to network a mid-century modern with a contemporary character. Handpicked upholstery from Good Earth and Sarita Handa display graphics that hail from the subcontinent. A wooden coffee table and a cane-fronted television console fetch a zeal of warmth to the hosting space.
Separated by a series of grooved wooden doors with fluted glass infills, is the kitchen. A warm aquamarine hue on the upper-tier cabinetry, speckled grey stone backsplash over the countertops paired with a wooden finish on the lower cabinetry create an interesting juxtaposition of colour and pattern. With wooden flooring and a cool grey concrete finish on the walls, the den extends a space of cottage-esque tranquility. Floor to ceiling shelving, a Windsor-style inspired rocking chair and a wooden coffee table sitting atop a rustic ikat rug furnish the comfortable reading nook.

The bedroom for the matriarchal head of the family is reminiscent of a stroll down a fragrant esplanade. Floral Nilaya wallpaper on the accent wall finishes as an idyllic backdrop against the ivy green upholstered bed. The habitant’s fondness of colour and florals was a catalyst as inspiration for the designer’s drawing board.
The master suite, emblematic of all things minimal and zen is a retreat to all senses. Deep blue is paired with an ambient ubiety of white. Pervasive mouldings and an ash background against which rests a wingback Prussian blue bed, the space defined by old-world charm wooden nightstands.
The social areas of the residence are in a seamless perpetual tete a-tete. Whereas the individual sections entertain retreat in desolation, allowing the members to mark their eccentricity and identity.
“For us as a design studio, this space has enabled us to push the envelope and transcend our signature fluidic and uber contemporary design style. We’ve been able to make the space’s DNA ours while staying tethered to the family’s vision.” share Disha and Shivani.
The highlight of the facade, however, is the cane weaved headboard with a concrete finish. The wardrobe shutters, built in solid wood with moulding details and brushed brass hardware display a classic charisma. The minimalist ensuite bathroom draws upon tones of taupe.
33/155
Embodying subdued Scandinavian style, this 1500 sq ft Mumbai home overlooking the Powai Lake is a paradigm of eccentric design.
A classic palette of nudes and sombre tones with an added splash of colour breaks away from the monotony. Accent finishes such as exposed brick, veneer, Italian marbles, and more top off the material mood board. With the keywords minimalism and functionality in mind, the homestead accents marble as an architectural design detail.
Greeting the observer upon entrance is a wide passage leading to a lavish living-cum-dining room. An unconventional V-shaped layout which was also the designer’s biggest challenge while fashioning the home now serves as the standout segment.
A triangular balcony in the centre of the floorplan with the living room on one side and an adjacent dining section features windows that imbue the space in plenty of light.
Curated by Hiral Shah, principal designer of Mustard Design Studio, the house explores elegance through nordic bohemian construction as their root source of inspiration.
34/155
A linear theme is illustrated in diverse design patterns and textures replicated throughout the residence. Exacting a period of 10 months from the stages of planning to execution, the project portrays the firm’s primary philosophy of reflecting the owner’s personality meticulously by fusing quirk in a classic design.
35/155 Subdued Scandinavia Mustard Design Studio subdues Scandinavian Design in this Mumbai home

Decked thoughtfully with catalogued decor including nominal furniture and neutral fabrics with tonal pops, the living room maintains a spacious panorama. Contemporary abstract artworks accent the wall and operate as a buffer between the facade and furniture.
The designer’s favourite space- the daughter’s bedroom, reflects the girl’s personality. The room features a boho-contemporary aesthetic with stunning linear wall panelling that camouflages the bathroom door. The sleek style incorporated is meant to imitate piano keys, resonating with the daughter’s affection for the instrument. Blush pink walls contrast black and white monochromatic tiles in the en-suite bathroom to maintain a consistent bohemian theme.
37/155
Conjointly doubling as a guest bedroom when required, the son’s room opts for simple Scandinavian spirited decor with modest linear patterns. The room also accommodates a desk space essential for any member of the family working from home. What resulted in being the ultimate a la mode bathroom the Design Studio has ever done, is the en-suite powder room. Sheathed in Terrazzo stone from Kalinga, the choice of marble complements the vertical subways of the bathroom adding to the home’s linear look. A vertical pattern is adapted on the storage cabinets as well, persisting a consistency in the visual language of the project.
A chic and charming dining area with rich Italian marble and a grand dining table embrace the home’s dignified design. Panelled glass doors open up the kitchen to the living room area, unifying the space with the plan of the living room.

The designer’s primal ambition was to present the family with a home that was as ravishing as it was resplendent. “Essentially, they wanted the kind of cosy house that everyone dreams about, but one that was also classy enough to stand out.” shares Shah on her design theory for the project.
The chamber and its bath, both emanate an elegant milieu by garnering features like Italian marble and straight lines in its makeup. A designful splash of colour delivers a subtly distinct aesthetic to each bedroom, that mirrors the house’s principal visual device.
Crafted throughout the master suite in a vast variety of forms and textures is the homogeneous linear pattern. Along with carefully designed panelling, similar to the daughter’s bedroom camouflages the en-suite bathroom door, the bedroom also includes a wall-mounted television set.

The next bedroom features a neutral scheme with grey, brown and golden tones. A concrete finish on mdf panels sheathe the walls of the room. The two bedrooms were curated with a mindset of crafting a comfortable space for the boys that is as luxurious as it is functional. The master suite dons a classic colour combination of white and gold fashions a warming and wealthy environment. Intimate elements including picture frames of the couple, minimal decor and soft hues furnish the room. Connected to the master bedroom is a walk-in wardrobe, and a study. A finicky focal point in the residence’s design, the study was designed to be as utile as it is upscale. Light-coloured minimalist furniture, bookshelves scattered on top of the table as well as some accent pieces bring character and charm to the thoughtfully planned room. The apartment also allows access to a pleasing private balcony, perfect for intimate indoor-outdoor activities as well as some family bonding. The project’s capping composition balances a bandwidth of select tones and textures persisting a consistency in the primary pattern hence maintaining a rooted model allowing seamless transitions throughout the home. “Luxury is no more about thrusting all ornate elements in a room, but it’s about getting to the crux of the needs and requirements of the end user and curating spaces that epitomise their very own spirit of luxury.“ Shares Porwal on his Design theory and notion on the construction’s theme.

Quartered on one and the other sides of the courtyard are the master bedrooms. The suites also happen to be the designer’s best-loved space when it came to the construction of the project, as their rather sizeable floor plans allowed for the rooms to accommodate an assortment of elements embellishing the area.
Monochrome Satvario marble table tops and walls create a subtle contrast against the beige soft furnishings and carpet flooring in the room.

Sequester seating, recliners, ottomans, consoles and builtin bars and mini-fridges are some facets that furnish the favoured spaces. The manor manifests refined mid 18th-century neoclassical design while contemporary components introduce a European character rendering the space timeless. “We have been really particular to stick to one theme here, as we believe that an iconic project narrates a story right from the entrance gateway to the washrooms. The story must relate sentence-by-sentence from the beginning to the end, “ share Shiv and Mohit on their design language for the project.
Cast in the mineral city of Raipur, the Tetris House by Neelesh Chopda Architecture mounts a minimal monochrome model. Set on a plot measuring 780 sq m in Swarnabhoomi, the manor’s architectural form and design, inspired by the retro game ‘Tetris’ , strikes the onlooker’s eye.

Crafting a paradoxical juxtaposition, viridescent artwork hung on backdrop of grey texture, stands out against the bucolic blend of rustic wood in the flooring and furniture in the first bedroom.
“The interactive spaces created in the design serve as a link between the various generations experiencing the respective areas.
