Bolshie began with and is now complete with these wo -rds. After months of thought, long days and late nights, our launch issue is finally here. Fashion is a lot more democratic now than it once was. Now, fashion and freedom are two words that have always been closely linked. Without freedom, what is fashion? Creating an impact that goes beyond just heavy price tags, and also filters out to the masses. That is our goal. magazine for the raw ambitious renegade. A magazine that will decode the dress code.

Think of this magazine as a party, bursting with new loud creative energy, the clean and graphic fonts and layouts allow our bold impactful visuals and crisp writing to shine. The awaited Coup Issue is here stating that the ‘unusual’ is welcome.

Selling freedom and establishing confidence. For the bold and the brave, with the coup issue, we throw the fashion rulebook away. One of our editorials ‘State of Rebellion’ (pg no. 18 -27) talks about just that with women sharing their perspectives about the rules in restrictions that society has put up and addresses their hypocrisy through the various society’s scales of acceptability.

And for the Coup Issue, well this issue is dedicated to those who can hear tomorrow coming.

It’s always the hardest decisions that make for the best stories. This piece is all about breaking stereotypes. Addressing the social decree in India by exaggerating them as a form of rebellion. A story about women of all ages/sizes/ cultures and lifestyles addressing the hypocrisy in society told through illustrations. In the state of rebellion, we bring to you the different scales of acceptability that society measures us and our actions according to. From addresses issues like crop tops being unacceptable to how short is too short,body shaming and even limitations according to age or gender. In this illustration based editorial we tackle these issues by drawing attention to them and bringing them into the limelight. It’s about time we take some action, because here things aren’t getting any better.

Every last young person that belongs to this generation is an advocate. They individually hold the power to make a change of any scale to their liking. There are a lot of different voices, let’s see what some of them have to say.

And who are the new fashion rebels? It is Gen-Z that makes the world go round, and the only thing they’re guilty of is dreaming of a brighter future. What is fashion to an individual if not a way for them to tell their story? You’ll find that this breed is powerful and this breed is inclusive.

For this article, we asked some of the new fashion rebels we know to answer a few questions for us and to see that people are now not afraid to be or look different anymore is very inspiring.

Interviewing those who aren’t afraid to stand out, who want to experiment, those who might have been judged before but don’t care about what others have to say anyway. Letting them speak up and hearing them out, that’s what this piece is all about.

What made you decide to get all of your hair cut? “I had long colored hair, I’d often get compliments but also a lot of negativity. And all of these opinions made me feel like I was only a certain level of attractive. I wanted to prove that I can look banging with any king of hairstyle.” – Aarya Kharangate , 19, Decided to cut all of her hair off one fine day.

“ I seem to have created an invisible line of constriction that I’m unprepared to cross. And yet it’s nobody’s doing but me.”

What inspires you to be this bold and confident? “There’s nothing in particular that inspires me, I think that self-love and self-acceptance is extremely important. Unless I’m happy with myself and confident in my own skin, nobody else would accept my differences.” – Muskaan Mehra, 20, Body positivity activist.

Have you ever worried about what people might say or others might react? “I haven’t given it much thought, but at the end of the day I believe there are some people who feel like they HAVE to judge, and if they want to well then let them. If I know that doing something makes me happy, I wouldn’t think twice before doing it. I make impulsive decisions, heck I once colored my hair parrot green without really giving a sh*t about what people might say. I know that people will talk so I might as well give them a reason to.” – Yamini Shenoy, 19, The girl with the rainbow hair.

Have you ever received any criticism about your fashion decisions, what do you have to say to your critics? “Yes, I have received negative response and very often while we’re at it. But personally, I couldn’t care less about what others think of me. I am and always will be open to constructive criticism and I’d like to let them know that their negative remarks aren’t going to be anything more than a small rock for me to jump over on my way to expressing myself the way I want to.” – Tanushree Kor, 21, Wore mismatched socks to college because she felt like it.

The youth wants to incite change, they’re all so full of potential. Confident, because they feel safe. We need to create an environment that allows us to explore. Make sure they have access to what it is that they prevail. We must draw inspiration from what’s around us.

Complacency is not going to be tolerated, it’ll be gradual but it’ll happen. The main question you must now ask yourselves is

20 “A man wearing pink? Must be gay.” Why is it that the first thought that comes into mind when a man is wearing shades of pink/reds/purples or a print or style that is cursed with the word ‘feminine’ in the eyes of others it immediately it takes his masculanity away? Last time we checked there wasn’t a law that says that pink was a woman’s color. Boys are allowed to like more than just blue. After all as Diane Vreeland once said “Pink is the new navy.”

The only message they have for you? Stop stereotyping. In the end femininity or masculinity has nothing to do with what you wear. It boils down to you.

What is fashion if not another way to express yourself? And how you decide to do that is entirely up to you.

POCKETS FULL OF FREEDOM - Rhea Sinha

How comfortable is too comfortable? Everybody knows that women have to go on through most of our lives being in discomfort. When one hears somebody say ‘Being fashionable comes with a price’, They aren’t just talking about the hefty price tag but also the physical discomfort that women have to face. Clothing that’ll leave behind a mark; just isn’t cutting it for us anymore. After a long exhausting day at school/college or work what is the first thing that women have accustomed themselves to? Taking off those painful high heels, opening the bra strap that digs into your skin, unbuttoning that uncomfortable shirt and unzipping those hard-to-breathe in trousers. And despite of this daily drill, we’ve taken the agonizing shackles of women’s clothing and the irritation it causes us for granted.

Over the last several years, the broader cultural shift in how we view gender has also picked up speed in the fashion industry.

Picture it, if one has an event to attend, and has to dress up to the nines, in the back of their mind, they’re thinking but wearing anything that is strapless, short, off-shoulder, figure hugging etc.: - would mean a night of twitching, fidgeting and a lot of adjusting as well. .” And then there is the ever-present threat that is wardrobe malfunctions.

Why is it that women, can’t actually be at ease, instead of always having to pretend to look like they are?

Ever noticed that women’s clothing only gets more intricate and finicky in line with the formality of the event?

5-inch tall heels and strappy dresses? Yeah. That’s the stuff of nightmares.

Just the thought of how self-conscious one would have to be at something as simple as a date or something as important as an interview about their clothing. , when they should have my focus on something else, something that is much more important is stomach-churn

ing. Take a minute and look around you. Women smoothing, fiddling, hobbling in discomfort. Isn’t it disturbing?

Having to live in these Fetters of Fashion?

If one were to draw a graph showing ‘how formal they look’ and ‘how comfortable they feel’ for the preceding years, it would be what we mathematicians call a negative correlation – as one increases, the other decreases proportionately. To get away from these painful shackles, for comfort we tend to look to men’s clothing. We need to now talk about pockets. There are major advantages to switching it up; plentiful pockets, simpler dressing decisions, and easier temperature control.

It is evident that one of the best things about clothing for men has to be the way it is designed to cover, not accentuate. Makes one wonder does society want women to be in discomfort?

And even when a woman does conform to men’s clothing, she is judged, she is ridiculed, she isn’t allowed to be the women that she wants to be. The message that must accepted and understood overall is that a woman doesn’t need a pair of 5inch heels to stand tall, she needs to be allowed to make her own choices. There is no way to understate the net effect of being able to wear clothing that is cut for comfort without sacrificing formality and professionalism.

You’ll see women all over the world fighting this fight.

Women who are taking up monthly challenges, borrowing their boyfriend’s clothing for a day out, shopping in the men’s section. Women who do not want to exert their mental energy trying to imagine, how their neighbors, loved ones, friends, colleagues or even strangers they run into on their daily commute would perceive them and their bodies. Women who just want to scrub of the mark that women’s fashion leaves on you.

One of the most common problems that women face with their clothing is that our pockets are never big enough to hold the smallest belongings or sometimes we never even have any. Hence, we turn to Men’s jackets, shirts and hoodies. They’re a lot more conventional and oh so much more comfortable.

It isn’t necessary to obediently follow the rulebook. Even though there are a few items in women’s clothing that is supposed to be similar in terms of look and feel to men’s garments. They are priced at much higher rates.

So why not just shop in the men’s section? Take boyfriend jeans for example, if your boyfriend is paying a lesser amount for his, why shouldn’t you? Men’s clothing is always cheaper. Sweaters, button-up shirts, lose joggers, t-shirts, jackets, socks and even backpacks.

Don’t let anything bind you

The future is fluid. Gender fluid clothing will also help us be more sustainable in time ahead.

Wu Tingfang said “Fashion is the work of the devil.” but it should also be noted that it is not generally men who decide what women wear. The biggest step towards being free of the dictates of fashion is to not allow oneself to be bound by them. Dressing comfortably isn’t just a matter of finding breathable, well-cut clothes—it’s also a mindset.

There is a well-known trope when it comes to wardrobes and romantic relationships: the girl who steals her boyfriend’s clothes. This was so well known, that in-fact a few years ago men started the #TakeHerHoodie movement in revenge where they’d playfully take clothes from their girlfriend’s wardrobes. Don’t you think that sharing clothes with your friends, family or partner should be encouraged? Not only for comfort reasons but also because it is much more sustainable. When you have clothes that you no longer want, donating them should be your last resort. If we only swap within the boundaries of gender then we miss out on doing this as effectively as we could; keeping more clothes out of landfill and getting them into the hands of people who’ll genuinely enjoy them.

Dressing comfortably is a mindset

Gone are the days when skirts were just for women and suits were just for men.

This is where androgynous clothing comes in. The year is 2020. Gender should no longer dictate the wardrobes of men and women.

Designers are combining men’s and women’s collections on the runway. Fashion brands are launching gender fluid clothing. Keep it in mind folks, the future is fluid. Gender is a fairly restrictive concept, Clothing that is gender neutral allows one to self-express however it is that they want to. Fashion’s bold-new future has no gender. Gender fluid clothing is a fusion of fashion and functionality.

If you ever walk by the opposite gender’s section in a store and think that a shirt that you see on the rack might look good on you, then it is for you to wear.

What opened the gate of gender-fluid fashion? One might wonder. Well it was the slow-burn trend of Athleisure; Sportswear. Think sweats, hoodies, leggings etc: - they are the beginning, but not the end.

School. What was school like to you? A place where you’d grow, somewhere you’d learn. A rite of passage in a way even, a place that’d educate you and shape you into the person that you are today. School and college two major phases in our lives that both play a major role and have a great influence on who we are today and how we got here. And fashion?

Well look around you, this is the era of fashion. And it is proving itself to be quite the influence in the life of youngsters, so what happens when you mix the two?

It is inspiring to see students who aren’t afraid to mix it up, students who aren’t afraid to change it up and students who aren’t afraid to take a stand for what they believe in.

It’s all that everyone’s talking about in the fashion industry, students who are aspiring and upcoming designers all over the world have started to walk the walk instead of just talking the talk in the rebellion against the societal norms of the fashion industry.

Remember that it’s ok to be different, to mix it up and it’s okay to switch it up. Be who you want to be. You will always be loved and you are always going to be accepted. And this message must be intertwined in the minds of the youth from the grassroot level.

In the dictionary, Fash- college along the lines of racial and body diversity, ion is described as “the gender fluidity etc.: prevailing mode in such things as are subject to change in form of a style, as in ornaments, etiquette and especially in dress”. All that pervades is its influence, that it is but natural for students to get afflicted with this symptom of modernity. Would there be any room at all for individuality if fashion itself was eliminated from our lives? For a while now, a new kind of fashion is being witnessed.

Shonika, tell us about your line “Ze - Ze is for people who associate themselves are non-binary/ genderless. People who do not want to be categorized into any gender.”

And what inspired you to come up with this line?

“In more progressive parts of the world, genderless fashion is nothing new but for a place steeped in conservatism, like India, the idea is still rather niche. So, with the legalization of LGBTQ rights in 2018.

The coming years are going to be the elevation to the idea/people/community. Hence, thought of creating something for the people who believe in being more than a girl/boy.”

Have you ever worked with addressing the societal norms that have been imposed on fashion before?

“I believe fashion is all about breaking the social norms. This was my first time working on

something that would give our society a new perspective. It was a great experience.”

Was it difficult getting approvals from your faculty and were you worried about how the audience would perceive it? Whether your line would be accepted?

“The idea was a little difficult for me to explain at the start. As the topic has a lot of depth to it. I needed to break the boundaries but not get lost in the void. But the faculty helped me take my idea further and gave me a direction.

I was a little scared how the audience is going to perceive it but as I said 2019 was a year of a lot of breakthroughs and people were quite accepting to the fact that things are changing.”

Is addressing these issues something that you want to continue working on in the future?

“Yes, definitely. Fashion is all about bringing the change. With more read

-ing and research, I got really involved in the topic and would like to work on breaking gender norms further.”

What kind of a future do you see for the fashion industry?

“I believe the future is about not having to fit into gender roles and wearing whatever you like. There will be more talk about gender orientation or identity and soon people will be free to wear whatever they want.”

You’ve spent some time travelling in this past year since you graduated, do you think that travel inspires fashion? Would you see the same trend that’s happening in Miami, in a city in India?

“Travelling has always been a great passion of mine. If there are any words that go togther better than fashion and freedom it would be fashion and travel. I definetly do think that Travel inspires fashion. It could be the styles of a country, it’s nature or maybe even it’s architecture.

Yes you would but there would be different ways in execution ofcourse.

Fashion, in a way of its own is a non-verbal form of communication that conveys one’s personality. The Fashion industry is important and an inspiration to people in all walks of life, especially students.

And the very concept of fashion has taken to society for decades now, it isn’t something new, it is something that is fast growing and ever-changing. Why is the youth deemed rebellious? Because of the restlessness within; to assert individuality, break-away from norms. Us humans, we are thinking creatures.

We contemplate before we make decisions. In choosing fashion, we do the same. We are free to stop following the already existing fashion-rulebook whenever we want to.

The youngster is no slave to fashion.

This is where we bring in the classics; blue jeans, a white tshirt, denim jackets, pajamas, sunglasses, the Little black dress and even a trench coat. A garment or an accesory that finds its place in every wardrobe. . A piece of clothing is simply a piece of clothing by its own, it amounts to nothing when you think about it, it is only an object. But when we say that we have a special item kept away in the back of our closets or a favourite that you might put on everyday, it’s the people who wear it or have been wearing it that add personality to it. Clothes do not discriminate, they do not judge, they’re flexible, they can be manipulated or styled in any way to fit or blend in into the life of anybody. So here’s a story that captures the fit of the same items in the lives of different people.
