Project ESA’s European Ground Segment Common Core (EGS-CC) is a European initiative to develop a common infrastructure for spacecraft testing and operations for European prime and sub-contractors, satellite operators and launcher operators.

Our role We are leading the Belgian team of the international consortium providing major contributions to EGS-CC. RHEA has also been tasked to assess and integrate EGS-CC for major European commercial space companies.

Our role Development of mission preparation, control and automation systems. Our team adapted and configured existing, proven ground segment technologies to support the mission. These adapted technologies can be reused for future ELSA missions.

European Union cyber defence Project European Network of Cybersecurity Centres and Competence Hub for Innovation and Operations (ECHO) – a European Commission Horizon 2020-funded pilot project designed to strengthen the proactive cyber defence of the EU and develop a European cybersecurity ecosystem.

Our role

Dedicated in-house SOCs: We design and deliver tailored SOCs, providing class-leading cyber defence capabilities. And we provide full training to enables your teams to exploit your SOC’s extensive features.

We are the technical lead for 30 organizations from different fields and sectors who are partners in ECHO. The aim is to connect and share knowledge across multiple domains and develop a common cybersecurity strategy for Europe.

Our role We are leading the cybersecurity activities within LOTUS, employing our COMET™ and Security Aware Concurrent Design Platform (SACDP) software to enable security by design for this complex multidisciplinary programme, and optimize avionics and ground station design.

AI in spacecraft operations Project Implementation of AI and machine learning in ground segment operations for ESA. Our role RHEA and its partners will develop a platform and a set of proofof-concept AI applications to demonstrate that using AI to aid operations can provide benefits such as increased automation and reduced costs.

Model-Based System Engineering and Concurrent Design Concurrent design has been used for space projects for over 20 years. It is now being used in other domains, such as defence, critical infrastructure and commercial applications.

Concurrent design significantly reduces both the cost and duration of feasibility studies and minimizes overall risk during the early phases of a project’s lifecycle.

Our solution: Our concurrent design methodology provides a powerful solution for the early stages of projects that involve multiple engineering and business disciplines. It is supported by our marketleading COMET™ software.

With concurrent design we practice security by design; the security domain is involved from the start, effectively making sure that both physical and cybersecurity requirements are considered from the outset.

Case study

COMET is RHEA’s collaborative Model-Based System Engineering toolsuite. It is open source and standards based (ECSS-E-TM-10-25), and provides integration with many industry tools

and standards such as SysML, STEP, ReqIF and simulation environments, offering a true collaborative, multidisciplinary engineering environment for early phase design.

Concurrent engineering for defence Project Concurrent design and engineering for the Defence Materiel Organisation (DMO), part of the Dutch Ministry of Defence.

Our role Applying our concurrent design methodology to DMO projects, including the specification of new naval vessels. We are also providing training and coaching, and support to establish a dedicated facility, so that the DMO will be self-sufficient in concurrent design by the end of the 3-year programme.

Satellite Applications There is a wealth of data available from EO, positioning, navigation and timing, communication and science missions.

As a result, opportunities for commercial organizations to utilize space data have exploded.

Our services: Our engineers and industry experts are working on an array of projects using satellite data, including supporting a system for efficient production of algae crops to provide a costeffective, eco-friendly alternative to soya.

Our solutions: We are developing GENI – a solution to extract information from large amounts of EO data – using our expertise in processing

complex information using the latest advances in AI, machine learning and data analytics. By combining different data sources and using data mining techniques, we can extract information and provide new solutions to help clients improve their business offerings.

Project The Rapid Action on Coronavirus and Earth observation (RACE) dashboard is a cooperative venture between ESA and the European Commission. It uses satellite EO data to indicate societal and economic changes taking place due to the pandemic.

Our role Our experts used AI to analyse very high resolution satellite imagery and extract indicators of activity levels in European hotspots, including ports and industrial areas.

Space Situational Awareness We are closely involved in ESA’s Space Situational Awareness (SSA) programme.

This was created to protect our planet by autonomously detecting, predicting and assessing the risk to life and property from space.

Risks arise from remnants of man-made space objects, due to re-entry and in-orbit explosions or collisions, and the effects of space weather phenomena on space- and ground-based infrastructure.

Space weather service network Project RHEA is leading the activity to define a new over-arching design for ESA’s Space Weather Services network.

Our role To turn existing products into a system of services with a standardized infrastructure. It combines our expertise in space weather, architectural design, modelling and concurrent design to prepare state-of-the-art architectural candidates for the future system.

APS Aviation APS Aviation is part of RHEA Group. We are the global leader in research and testing of de/anti-icing fluids, development of holdover times (HOT) guidelines and technical safety evaluations.

We have spent nearly 30 years working with regulators, global standards organizations, highly qualified partners and industry in aircraft ground deicing research and development.

The APS Holdover Times app is updated annually to provide complete HOT information, saving flight crew valuable time in the cockpit. It uses HOT data developed and managed by APS on behalf of Transport Canada and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for the last 20 years.

We have also written over 200 technical reports on ground deicing, prepared on behalf of Transport Canada and the FAA.
