European Union directives and regulations

The last 2 years have seen a raft of legislative activity in the European Union (EU) around cybersecurity and the use of certain technologies. These changes will improve the overall level of cybersecurity across Member States, but at the same time they place significant obligations on CEOs and Board members, and present substantial challenges for cybersecurity teams.

Nexova’s cybersecurity experts help our clients navigate the requirements set by these directives and regulations, and we take account of all relevant legislation in our services and solutions.

NIS2 Directive

The EU Network and Information Systems 2 (NIS2) Directive came into force in January 2023, with Member States having until October 2024 to transpose the Directive into law.

NIS2 is a significant update to the EU’s cybersecurity regulations, expanding the scope of the previous NIS Directive and introducing more stringent security obligations and incident notification requirements. It includes a specific focus on securing critical infrastructures and reducing supply chain risks stemming from third party vendors.

The Directive also defines the roles of CEOs and Board members, with CEOs required to ensure their organisations address and implement the key elements specified in the Directive.

Nexova helps organisations and senior management understand the implications of NIS2

and support them in meeting their obligations in aspects such as:

Risk analysis and management

Developing and updating information system

security policies

Incident handling

Business continuity planning and crisis management

Supply chain security analysis

Training for management, board members and staff.

Nexova – your trusted partner through the entire cybersecurity value chain.

AI Act

Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning hold great potential for cybersecurity operations, but also raise concerns around trustworthiness, security and data protection. To help address this, any use of AI, including in cybersecurity, will in future need to take account of the EU AI Act, which came into force on 1 August 2024.

Government and military receive an average of attacks per organisation every week.

Source: Check Point Research

There is a 2-year timeline for enforcement for the various prohibitions and obligations covered by the Act, which classifies AI systems into different categories of risk. These range from those with minimal risk, which will be unregulated, to high risk, which includes aspects such as biometrics, critical infrastructures, education and employment. The rules on high risk systems come into force in August 2026.

The AI Act not only sets a high benchmark for global AI regulation but also represents a significant step towards a safer and more transparent AI ecosystem. As we continue to innovate at the intersection of AI and cybersecurity, the AI Act presents a transformative opportunity.

At Nexova, we are dedicated to staying ahead of regulatory changes and leveraging these to enhance our services, and supporting our clients to ensure they too are compliant. The AI Act’s focus on high-risk AI systems aligns perfectly with our mission to deliver robust, secure and ethical AI solutions.

There are only two types of companies in the world: those that have been breached and know it and those that have been breached and don’t know it.

Cyber Centre of Excellence

The Nexova Cyber Centre of Excellence is a unique, self-sustaining facility located in Europe’s newest Cyber Valley in the Belgian Ardennes. Hidden in the wide open, it is the beating heart of our company.

The Centre offers state-of-the-art training facilities, three ultra-secure security operations centres (SOCs), office spaces and secluded data centres in a unique setting designed to serve the needs of EU institutions, businesses, defence organisations and academia. Its classified environments enable service delivery up to SECRET level.

In an era marked by evolving threats and interconnected vulnerabilities, safeguarding defence assets and critical infrastructures is paramount. Our unified approach offers a comprehensive solution to fortify organisations against the complexities of modern security challenges.

Facilities

Our modular building features six distinct zones across two floors tailored to specific needs:

Ground floor – Reception, conference rooms, cyber-range and laboratories. Designed to facilitate daily operations while maintaining a robust defence posture.

Lower level – Classified zone (RF shielded), SOCs, incident management, post-incident management. This is the nerve centre of our operations, housing critical systems and resources, hidden from view.

Maximum security

The Centre is designed to provide maximum security where it’s needed most, making it ideal for organisations providing sensitive and classified services, and for critical infrastructures. Its selfsustaining features include its power supply, network infrastructure, data centres and network providers, and it is designed to meet all relevant European security standards.

Multiple layers of defence and security technologies are strategically implemented to create overlapping barriers against threats, including access control and intrusion detection and response.

A centre for innovation

The Centre is designed to enable continuous pursuit of innovation and technological leadership in cybersecurity. Our investment in R&D at the Centre includes: quantumsafe communication solutions; application of artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI) for cybersecurity; cyber radio frequency (RF) lab for drone-related technologies; cyber-range development; digital twin technology; and security in industrial control systems and operational technology.

Our innovation and development at the Centre take full account of all European regulations and directives, including NIS2 and the AI Act.

The Centre’s R&D facilities and cyber-range are available for use by our customers in addition to our cybersecurity experts.

Our service offering

Operating from a central European location, we offer a comprehensive range of advanced cybersecurity solutions. We solidify our clients’ cyber resilience and build trust through our advanced technologies and solutions. Our in-house engineers rely on a wealth of innovative and custom-built solutions that address every aspect of your cybersecurity needs, from deep engineering to overall tech stack strategies. Nexova helps you protect your people and their precious assets.

Cybersecurity Training

Nexova’s Cybersecurity Training is powered by CITEF (Cyber Integration, Test and Evaluation Field), our proprietary emulation technology, which can create a realistic digital replica of any IT/OT infrastructure. Using CITEF, your teams will receive cybersecurity training based on real-life scenarios of cyberattacks made on a digital replica of an infrastructure that represents your business environment.

This unique approach to cyber training maximises the learning value for your teams. Being highly flexible and customisable, our digital emulation platform allows us to tailor a training environment answering to specific educational needs. Training can be provided remotely or in our state-of-the-art cybersecurity classroom located at our Nexova Cyber Centre of Excellence in Transinne, Belgium.

Cybersecurity Managed Detection and Response Services

Our Cybersecurity Managed Services combine a multidisciplinary team with extensive cybersecurity expertise and knowledge of advanced European technology, together with our purpose-built security operations centre (SOC) located at our Nexova Cyber Centre of Excellence. This enables us to continuously monitor your connected systems, proactively detect cyber incidents and help you take action when needed. Our cybersecurity managed services provide 24/7 monitoring and alerts. The services include vulnerability management, endpoint detection and response (EDR), network detection and response (NDR), built-in threat-hunting intelligence and incident response.

Cyber-Range and Emulation Services

Nexova’s advanced digital emulation platform, CITEF, can easily create a virtual replica of your IT/OT environment that can be used for a wide range of purposes:

Prepare for the integration of new complex systems or additional IT/OT elements in your operational infrastructure

Assess the security vulnerabilities of your operational environment in a safe manner

Validate new versions of architectures, software and operating systems

Rehearse and improve incident response plans through table-top exercises

Train operators of your security systems.

Our solution can be adapted to your specific needs and delivered on premise or as a service. In the latter case, our platform is hosted on our multi-tenant, secure private cloud. Training sessions are held either at our Nexova Cyber Centre of Excellence in Transinne or at your premises.

Why use CITEF with a SOC?

Nexova’s CITEF is one of the best cyberrange platforms on the market, being used to help train employees and students worldwide.

Combining CITEF’s cyber digital twin with SOC services offers unique synergies that can help with many different scenarios. These include enhancing SOC monitoring and detection, and identifying any potential threats in a controlled, virtual space before they impact operational systems. It can also improve SOC incident responses, helping SOC teams to practice and refine their actions.

As a digital twin platform, CITEF enables SOC threat hunting, providing a sandbox environment to test and validate threat hunting techniques in a safe environment. CITEF is also used to deliver comprehensive security training, where SOC analysts can work in a realistic training environment to practice and enhance their skills.
