Theux // Julien

Brussels, Belgium, 2017 in collaboration with AUXAU Programme : Transformation of a traditional Brussels house Web : www.auxau.com/theux-2/ The owner of this house has a long story with it. In fact, it was bought by his grand parents in 1934, and he used to live, grow up and work there, in the family company. Now, it is the time for him to have his own children in this traditional Brussels house. It was built in 1905 with at first two succession rooms and three levels. In 1920, an extension added the third room for each level. Because of urbanism wich leads to really narrow and long houses. The main consequence is the lack of light in the middle spaces. Thus, the objective for the client and for us was to keep the house identity and to adapt it to modern life style. To do that, we used the constraints, and we transformed them into forces. The 1920 extension has a strange shape, so we used the in-between space generate by this extension and the party wall to create a new vertical circulation. This old narrow, outside and unused space become inside to be the main solution for architecture. The new stairs distribute rooms with any corridor. This solution maximises the width of this narrow house and bring light into the entire construction thanks to micro perforated metal and white color. Circulation in space is thought to be a ballad for light and inhabitants.

Belair // Laurent & Sandrine

Brussels, Belgium, 2017 in collaboration with AUXAU Programme : Fifties house transformation and extension Web : www.auxau.com/laurent-sandrine-2/

This house has been built in the fifties when Brussels experimented garden-cities in the suburb. It is a small, simple and efficient house with a nice garden. For this project it was a priority to respect the environment and the landscape of this garden-city. Only the ground floor has been transformed and extended. The intervention is invisible from the street. The extension is designed to be a succession of in-between spaces and to respect the original house structure. Thanks to a new central patio and the compressions between spaces, the outside/inside limit become confused. All spaces of the ground floor become a projection from inside to outside. The continued floor covering reinforces this sensation. During the construction phase, the original floor tiles have been discovered under several more recent layers. We kept and restored it. Some other details like doors has been restore the rediscovered the original characteristic of this house.

Verdun // Triplets

Brussels, Belgium, 2017 in collaboration with AUXAU Programme : Winned competition for the construction of social houses. Web : www.auxau.com/verdun/ This project is the winning proposition of a competition organized by the city to build three little social houses. Like a fill in the gaps exercise, our proposition link what is before and what go after to create a consistent solution for the existing context. Our research was based on the archetypal house with the idea to maximise volume and qualities of living spaces, the result is three cheap and generous houses. The unique envelope expressed as a long roof allows a lot of input light for living spaces and a perfect stand for solar panels. Particular considerations have been taken for materials and their implementation. They have been selected both for their technical qualities and durability but also for their intrinsic aesthetic qualities (aspect, texture, hue, dimension) which will express itself naturally in the project.

Brussels, Belgium, 2017 in collaboration with AUXAU Programme : Transformation and arrangement of apartment Web : www.auxau.com/gilles/ The project takes place in a small and full of light apartment. The client, a young, Belgian filmmaker, wanted a large living with one bedroom and some contradictions: - An open space with office area not completely independent but not completely in the living space - A guest room which can disappear when nobody use it and which respect a complete privacy for both the resident and the guest. The solution was found in one unique multiuse furniture which cross the apartment and make the space open and flexible. In one point, the furniture is the entrance door, in another it become the kitchen, the TV console or storages...The end part can be open to define the guest house and reveal a folding bed. During the construction phase, the discovery of a concrete ceiling (from this level the wood structure has been changed further to a past fire), has STERCKX adapted the project. We kept and cleaned this unexpected ceiling, and D'UN we APPARTEMENT TRANSFORMATION Situation : 1 rue Sterckx, Saint-Gilles decided to show the electric system. OISTAT Competition // Up & Down

Berlin, Germany, 2015 in collaboration with Olivier Reuter Programme : Floating theater

«The OISTAT Theatre Architecture Competition is an international ideas competition, aimed at students and emerging architecture practitioners, and is organised by the Architecture Commission of OISTAT (International Organisation of Scenographers, Theatre Architects and Technicians).» Holzmarkt is known as a region of Berlin where a no man’s land still exists between the vestige of the wall and the Spree and where a new kind of wall could appear, a wall of buildings and private spaces. To protect the Holzmarket and other “alternative” spaces in Berlin, a theater as a continuity of public space seems the best solution. Having an open public area that is accessible all day long and to anyone is the key to a successful theater. By multiplying the open scenes on this area, people are then free to see or do performances. This free expression space is exactly what Holzmarkt needs. The site’s existing energy is indeed expressed in a new way and the feeling to possess the place is improved. Furthermore, the theater provides points of view of the surrounding. In the meanwhile, the light structure does not block the riverbank view. The interior stage is entirely dedicated to improvisation battle where the public needs to be close and can easily being a part of the show.

Bureau B+B and Orso-Pitro won the international design competition for the redevelopment of the Vienna most important shopping area; the Mariahilferstrasse. By closing the street for traffic, the area has been adapted for pedestrians and bicycles. A way for bus is placed in the middle. The Mariahilferstrasse will be paved in a one level pavement, including discreet guiding lines for the different user groups. Urban furniture provides areas for meeting and recreation in the street. My main contribution on this project was to design furniture and to produce illustrations.
