ARRINGTON ICE ARENA

Arrington Ice Arena was officially dedicated and opened for business on Oct. 19, 2007, as the NCAA men’s hockey team squared off in its inaugural game against Potsdam State. The Bulldogs christened the new facility with a resounding 9-1 win in front of a packed crowd, who were also in attendance to see Lord Stanley’s Cup on loan from the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto. Adrian sports a sparkling 73-13-6 all-time record (.827) at Arrington. In addition, Arrington is home to Adrian College’s NCAA Division III women’s hockey, ACHA Division I and III men’s hockey, ACHA women’s hockey and the synchronized/ figure skating teams. The arena is named after Dr. Robyn J. Arrington, Jr. and his brother, fellow Adrian alumnus Harold M. Arrington. The brothers donated $3 million on behalf of their family. The $5.5 million project is also a place where local residents can use the facility for recreational activities. The operating schedule includes open skates for the community, learn-to-skate programs for children and adults and hockey programs for people of various ages and abilities. The arena consists of a single sheet of ice, 464 chair-back seats for capacity up to 1,000 standing-room only, a media press box, a president’s seating area, concession stand, pro shop with skate rental, offices for ice sports coaches and personnel and locker rooms. For more information about Arrington Ice Arena, visit the website at (www.arringtonicearena.com). Arrington Ice Arena has already been praised as one of the best hockey venues in Division III. The arena has hosted such events as a Detroit Red Wings alumni game and six Midwest/Northern Collegiate Hockey Association Harris Cups. In addition, the facility has played host to the 2010 and 2011 ACHA Division I All-Star Game and the U.S. Intercollegiate Figure Skating Championships in 2014.

NCHA CHAMPIONSHIPS 2007-08: The Bulldogs swept the Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association regular-season and tournament titles in their first year of existence. In Milwaukee, Wis., Adrian defeated Finlandia, 1-0, on Eric Miller’s 40th goal of the season 2 minutes and 29 seconds into overtime. Brad Fogal stopped all 18 shots he faced to notch his fifth shutout. Adrian finished 26-3 overall, 19-1 in the MCHA and 11th in the NCAA Division III national rankings with two 1st-place votes. 2008-09: Adrian sets school records with 27 victories and 20 conference wins en route to taking both MCHA regular-season and playoff championships again. The Bulldogs outscored the opposition 33 to 7 in four tournament games, including 7-1 over Milwaukee School of Engineering in the MCHA final at home. The Bulldogs ended ninth in the NCAA Division III national poll by USCHO.com at No. 7 with 146 points, both postseason bests in AC history. 2009-10: This season was thrice as nice as Adrian won both MCHA regular-season and playoff crowns for third time in a row. Even sweeter, the program’s first-ever bid to the NCAA Championship. The Bulldogs edged Marian, 3-2, in the conference finals. Despite a 4-3 loss to St. Norbert in the NCAA First Round, AC still posted a 24-4 overall record (20-0 in the MCHA) and was 10th by USCHO. 2010-11: The Bulldogs had a breakthrough season that included a national runner-up finish in the NCAA III Championship (lost a tough 4-3 game to St. Norbert), a year-end No. 2 national ranking by USCHO (with school-record 270 points) and simultaneous MCHA regularseason/tournament championships (5-0 over Marian) for the fourth-straight time. Adrian recorded a 25-4-1 mark overall and 18-1-1 in the conference. 2012-13: In the last season of the MCHA, Adrian reclaimed the conference tournament championship after a one-year hiatus with a convincing 4-1 triumph over MSOE. The Bulldogs, who made the NCAA Quarterfinals, finished 23-2-3 overall, 17-0-3 in the league and sixth in both national polls by USCHO and D3hockey.com. 2014-15: Adam Krug ‘12 piloted the Bulldogs (24-4-3, 16-1-1 NCHA) to their sixth conference tournament championship, seventh regularseason title, fifth NCAA tournament berth while reaching the National Semifinals and final rankings of third by both D3hockey and USCHO. The team produced three AHCA AllAmericans and best scoring tandem nationally.

SEASON PREVIEW: Primed for More Success The Bulldogs know they will have the bulls-eye on their collective back from opponents. That's because Adrian is the defending Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) regularseason and Harris Cup champion and nationally ranked No. 3 in the both preseason polls by D3hockey/ USCHO.com. But the Bulldogs, who have a mix of 15 returning lettermen and a talented recruiting class of 12 newcomers, also know they'll be taking it one shift at a time, one game at a time to accomplish a progression of goals that resembles like stepping up a ladder. "Expectations are high here at Adrian and our goals remain the same every year," says second-year head coach Adam Krug '12, who piloted the Bulldogs to a 24-43 record, 16-1-1 NCHA mark and NCAA Semifinals appearance while earning conference coach of the year honors as a rookie in 2014-15. "Win the next game. Win a conference regular season championship. Win a conference playoff championship. Win an NCAA championship. "We'll definitely have a target on our back considering we're the defending conference champions but that's nothing new," Krug added. "From Day 1, we've had a target. Anyone can win on any night in this league and we'll have to be up to the challenge every night." Despite losing two all-Americans among a group of 12 lettermen, Adrian still has some firepower in the cupboard. Left winger Kyle Brothers headlines that list as he earned first-team All-America and NCHA Freshman of the Year accolades while racking up 24 goals and 25 assists to pace AC in scoring with 49 total points. Classmate Mathew Thompson, who centers a line with Brothers, added scoring totals of 23+20=43 with a 24-plus rating to earn a place on the conference's allfreshmen team, giving the Bulldogs the most potent duo in NCAA Division III. "Kyle and Mat were the most electrifying players in the country last year," Krug said. "Kyle was first nationally in scoring and Mat wasn't far behind. They both can make plays and score goals.

It's a nice feeling to have them for another three years. We're looking for them to lead the way again up front." Other returning Bulldogs who scored in double figures a season ago include junior forward Jeremy Olinyk (11+17=28), senior defenseman Chris Leone (6+12=18, +15) and sophomore right wing Taylor McCloy (4+14=18). That experience helps tempers the loss of several key losses. "We will miss our ten graduates from last year. That group played in the NCAA tournament three times and got to the frozen four once," said Krug. "I think the class of 2015 showed our returners how to get there and now that experience can help us get over the top. We have 60 goals to replace and 23 wins between the pipes from that group. It will be hard to replace them but we're confident in the kids we brought in." Some of the top newcomers to the team include freshman center Connor Armour, freshman left wing Trevor Boyd, junior goalie Tyler Parks and freshman goalie Kevin Entmaa. One of the unknowns for the Bulldogs is the goaltending situation, which includes four on the 27-man roster. Sophomore Dillon Kelley has the most experience on the team after posting a 2-0 record, 2.00 goals-against average and .892 save percentage in 2014-15. Parks joins fellow D-I transfer Peter Megariotis, of Anaheim, Calif., who previously skated for Lake Superior State and Ohio State. "...We have four guys that can all stop the puck...We’re in the business of winning hockey games and the guy that gives us the best chance is going to play,” explains Krug. So what will change in Year 2 of the Krug coaching era? "Obviously, 12 new players. When you have the type of turnover that we had this off-season, we'll have to re-teach just about everything," Krug stated. "We'll tweak some things to cater to the different lineup but I don't foresee any major changes. We'll be a strong transition team again ...”
