6.30pm Thursday 8 June 2023 Headmaster’s Lawn
It is a testament to your forward-thinking belief in our vision that you have chosen to join us on this journey.
I am very pleased to welcome you to a new edition of our Supporters’ Review, a document which is both a thank you and a testament to your collective kindness to the RGS. This seventh edition celebrates your combined generosity, dedication and belief in our vision. As we marked the successful completion of our Twenty for 2020 Campaign, we have started to look forward towards our next milestone, The Road to 2035.
In this edition you will read, first-hand, about the experiences of our bursary holders. You will also read about our donors; supporters who, like you, have been motivated by the vision of offering every deserving student who applies the chance to embark on an RGS education, safe in the knowledge that each one will be supported throughout their time at the School.
I am delighted that we currently have 70 bursary holders who are at different stages of their academic journeys with us. Of those 70 students, 35 receive life-changing support (an 80% bursary or above) and 20 of them are funded fully through your generosity.
I wish to thank everyone whose contribution is recorded in this document, either by name, or as anonymous and valued supporters.
Uniting us all is our belief in an allencompassing, academically challenging and supportive education which equips our students for a life beyond the corridors of the RGS. It is a testament to your forwardthinking belief in our vision that you have
chosen to join us on this journey which will continue until every student who applies and passes our entrance examination can join the School, irrespective of financial impediments. Our “Road to 2035” begins here.
Inevitably, a year which brings us together in celebration also brings us together in moments of sadness. This year, we were very sad to say farewell to loved members of our community, and we lost a special friend in Robert Watson (OG 1957), a supporter, friend and loyal member of our legacy society, the Beckingham Society. Robert was one of those quietly generous friends who chose to remember the School in his will for the benefit of future generations of students.
Such acts of selfless kindness lie at the heart of all that we as a community stand for, exemplified in your support and recorded in these pages. On behalf of all of us who are lucky to be teaching and supporting our students, I wish to thank you all.
I hope that you will enjoy reading this special document which celebrates your support for our RGS. Without you, these achievements would not have been possible.

This review is our opportunity to say a big and sincere thank you to the 526 loyal supporters who continue to support the RGS Guildford in being able to open the doors of a great education to new generations of students. Your generosity and the difference you have made so far is a real springboard from which we can launch the next stage of our Bursary Campaign. This Supporters’ Review covers
The RGS has defined the person I have become, allowing me to take each step with confidence, knowing the RGS has prepared me for whatever may come my way.
The RGS Bursary Programme offers life-changing experiences and provides students with the knowledge and values to flourish at school and beyond. All our bursaries are funded by the School, the RGS community and Educational Trusts so the number of awards granted is dependent on funds available. The value of bursaries is set by strict criteria and is based upon financial need; these are rigorously means-tested and reviewed each year.
We offer two types of financial assistance to support families during their sons’ education at the School.
The majority of funds are spent on means-tested entrance bursaries, offering financial support to boys entering the School in 1st Form, and more rarely 3rd Form and Lower Sixth. These bursaries are offered for the duration of each pupil’s time at the RGS and are not dependent on academic performance, but are financially reassessed every year.
Income to the Bursary Fund is predominantly financed by those who wish to remember the School in their will and donors who choose to give regularly.
We also reserve a smaller fund each year to help existing RGS families faced with unexpected financial difficulty, often relating to redundancy, death or divorce. In these cases, we provide means-tested short-term support to help minimise disruption to a pupil’s education. With our limited funds, we prioritise those boys at GCSE or A Level.
In 2021/22, £939,000 was spent on meanstested bursaries and a further £132,000 was invested in our Enduring Bursary Fund. This fund will provide future bursaries in perpetuity.

21 of the 35 boys receiving life-changing bursaries are supported by you, the RGS Community.
Thank you for the incredible impact you make. The costs of other bursaries are met through the School’s commitment to widening access, our growing Enduring Bursary Fund, Educational Trusts and contributions from our international schools.

the RGS Bursary Foundation creates a ripple effect … in offering an education to bright boys without means there is an element of giving back to the broader community as a whole.
The RGS Bursary Programme enables donors to make a lasting, positive impact for an individual boy, which can have lasting, profound impacts for society.
Having been the beneficiary of an RGS bursary, I can honestly say that this is a transformative opportunity for any boy. The teaching I received while at the School was second to none - it piqued my curiosity in a range of subjects, and the debate and intellectual stimulation in lessons was something that helped to prepare me for university and beyond. Some of the friends I made during my time at RGS are my friends to this day - I even play football every Wednesday with a few of them!
For society, bursary schemes are a wonderful thing. Mixing people from diverse backgrounds has tremendous bridging benefits for society - people mix with others outside their own, immediate spheres, and grow more worldly-wise, compassionate and empathic as a result. This has huge, proven benefits for the world around us.
In donating to the RGS Foundation, you are enabling access to a world-class education for boys who might otherwise struggle to access it. You are opening the doors to boys
from difficult backgrounds, from singleparent families, for boys who are curious and intelligent but with little in the way of financial or social capital. That was me. And now, working with start-ups and scale-ups to develop groundbreaking new products, I am tremendously grateful for people like yourselves, who donated to the Foundation all those years ago and who contributed to giving me an amazing, transformative education.
I will carry the memories of RGS with me forever - walking through those double doors at the front of school on my first day, wondering how I would ever know my way around such a vast network of corridors; the smell of Bradstone Brook on an autumn day; the laughter as we sat crammed onto sofas in the Sixth Form Centre. These are things that stay with you for a lifetime.
Everyone deserves to have the experience that I had. The School is going from strength to strength, and having visited it recently and seeing the amazing work that is being done around diversity and inclusion - really living the values that RGS stands for - I am incredibly excited for the future of the school, and for the boys who are lucky enough to go through its doors.
Society grows great when we plant seeds and allow them to grow and blossom. The RGS is fertile soil for real, positive, lasting change, and I want to take the opportunity to say thank you, on behalf of myself, and for all of the other boys, families, and countless others you have helped through donating to the Foundation.
Society grows great when we plant seeds and allow them to grow and blossom.

Moving our son, Esa, to the RGS was the driving force behind quite a big lifestyle change for us. Whilst living and working in Singapore we visited the School for an Open Day during one of our trips home.
We committed to returning to the UK because we were so impressed with Dr Cox’s vision, the energy of the School, and most of all, the values of the RGS boys … they were naturally themselves. Yes, they were academically strong, but there is something special in being authentic and kind individuals.
Over the last six years Esa has truly grown into himself. Quietly confident, aware of himself and the impact he has on his community and the world in which he lives. I look at him now and am proud to see a productive member of society.
From the very beginning Dr Cox emphasised the importance of the Bursary Campaign, and the RGS Foundation is exceptional at keeping the wider community and parents updated.
The RGS Bursary Campaign offers an education to exceptionally talented individuals who have the potential but may not have the life infrastructure around them.
The decision to make our gift happened slowly, over time, watching from the sidelines and reading the Foundation publications and website. During Esa’s GCSEs we felt the time was right to give back and help another bright boy access an outstanding education.
My husband, Arthur, suggested we approach BP and ask them to match fund our donation, which they did. I would suggest to anyone intending to donate to the Bursary Campaign that you ask
your employer about their match funding schemes. BP made it so easy for us and a lot of large organisations offer this as an employee incentive.
There is no doubt these RGS boys will be leaders of the future and the world needs more socially aware people. Within Esa there is a strong moral core. I am confident our youngsters today have the strength of character, the courage, the resilience and the grit to become the leaders of tomorrow.
We are very excited to be on the cusp of launching our new campaign, the Road to 2035. We look forward to telling you more and unveiling our new identity at our annual Supporters’ Summer Reception on 8 June. Because of your support our Twenty for 2020 Campaign was an incredible success and the Road to 2035 will take us further in our ambitions to deliver on our promise to be able to offer an RGS education to every bright boy, irrespective of his financial circumstances.
To achieve our ambition, we aim to raise £13 million by the year 2035, and everyone within our community will play an important part in this journey. The legacy we create today will become a part of the RGS Guildford heritage tomorrow.
The Institute of Development Professionals in Education released their 2021 benchmarking report in February this year. Amassed from member schools of the Institute, it is a key resource that evaluates development activities within schools. The report indicates that the RGS is now in the top third of schools for amount raised by a development office. We are indebted to all our community for their belief in the importance of a good education and their continued support.
Thank you to all the families who have contributed to the Class of 2022 Bursary Appeal. Over a quarter of you have chosen to mark your sons’ time at the School by ensuring an RGS education is open to another bright and inquisitive local boy.
Thank you to our outstanding Foundation Trustees for their commitment and dedication in 2021/22. Their contribution has helped shape our development plans and engage with our community of supporters.

Thank you to those who celebrated with us last July, and to Nathan Janmohammed OG 2019, for being able to give an insight into the difference your support has made to his career and other pupils at the School. He is about to begin a teacher training course in Leicester, and pass on his enthusiasm for learning to the next generation of school children.
Before the launch of our new campaign, we wanted to take a retrospective moment and recognise all that we have achieved to date. In particular, those members of our community who purchased a Quincentenary Memorial Chair for use in Big School. Launched in 2012 this was one of our earliest campaigns, and these donors ensured their gift became part of the fabric of School life. Thank you to the 100 pioneering supporters who helped start something special. The plaques on our Big School chairs read as follows:

The RGS Guildford is built on the legacy of its founders and successive benefactors who have supported the School for over 500 years. For over half a millennium we have forged new relationships with donors and discovered new friendships across the generations, to bring us to today, and this Supporters’ Review you are reading.
Our School was established in 1509 after Robert Beckingham, a Freeman of the City of London, left a bequest in his will to establish a ‘free schole’ in the historic town of Guildford. The School became independent in 1977 but we still aim to offer many of our pupils a rewarding education irrespective of their financial circumstances.
Headmaster, Dr Jon Cox, created the Beckingham Society nearly 15 years ago to celebrate this original principle, and as a way for our community to remember us in their will.
We were all deeply saddened by the loss of one of the Beckingham Society’s founding and most colourful members. Robert Watson OG 1957 (1938 - 2022) won a scholarship here in 1949 and his relationship with us truly lasted a lifetime. He was a Prefect, awarded School and House sporting colours and ran the School magazine. After graduating he travelled widely, spending over 30 years in Hong Kong, but he kept in touch and when we launched the Bursary Campaign, he was one of our most encouraging and consistently generous advocates. Robert was a kind man who was incredibly proud of his education and wanted to pass that on, with financial support and sponsorship of the next generation of Old Guildfordians.
Robert was very much a friend to us, and retirement bought him back to Surrey and free to attend our many reunions and musical events, often just popping in for a welcome cup of tea. A gentle man who lived life to the full and we are forever grateful for his friendship.
Like Robert, you can become a part of our history and join the Beckingham Society. Members enjoy an annual society lunch with the Headmaster and are invited to many exclusive School events.
If you would like to join us, your gift will be exempt from inheritance tax. Our details are:

In 2017 we launched the ‘Class of …’ Programme as part of the Headmaster’s ambition to increase bursaries and widen access to the School. The RGS currently gives financial assistance to 7% of pupils and our long-term goal is to double this to 14%, approximately 140 boys.
The ‘Class of …’ Programme is a way to mark your sons’ time at the School in the most RGS way possible, by opening the door of a great education to the next cohort of RGS graduates. Local bright boys will benefit from a challenging education, thereby benefitting both the School and society as a whole.
Since 2017 218 families choose to support the Class of Bursary Campaign.
We ask the parents of each graduating class to contribute an affordable amount, from as little as £7 per month for seven years. After that time, we ask the students of the graduating class to join their families in supporting the programme.
Last year 34 families from the Class of 2022 raised 29% of a full seven-year bursary.
Thank you to the 218 families who since 2017 have chosen to commemorate their sons’ time at the RGS in this special way.
If you graduated prior to 2017 but want to create your own ‘Class of …’ please get in touch. The Class of 1987 did just that after they returned for a reunion and learnt about this Bursary Programme. As a cohort of friends, they gave a promising boy the gift of a great education 30 years after their own graduation. It’s never too late to get involved.
“We are fortunate to work and learn in a community filled with energy, kindness, support, compassion and good-humour. Thank you all for being a part of that community.”
Dr Jon Cox, Headmaster, Senior Prizegiving Speech 2022
