MONTHLY NEWSLETTER

November 2021

Coach's Note Sandro Salami Head of Youth

Greetings, parents and guardians! The best part about this past month is that we finally have our whole team back with us! After a short break for the younger groups for Diwali, we are all back and training has been on in full flow. We can not play matches yet, but we are training every day in preparation for when that time finally does come. While recent signs have been encouraging, we are still taking every precaution necessary to ensure the complete safety of all of our boys and staff. It is a challenge, but one I am sure our excellent team will deal with very well.

We are also looking forward to the final selection camp to be held next month. After a long search, we have finally got our shortlist down to the final few candidates, and very soon, we will be welcoming our next batch of Young Champs! We hope you enjoyed our new additions to these monthly updates. Don't forget to check out our Goal of the Month, Save of the Month, and Moment of the Month. We hope you enjoy viewing them as much as we did putting them together!

Counsellor's Note Padma Rewari Head of Child Welfare and Education

Dear parents and guardians, Exam season is in full flow, with our CBSE board students giving their first set of practical exams this month. The boys have all prepared well, and I'm confident that they will all do really well! The NIOS students, on the other hand, still have only one set of exams, which will be conducted in April/May 2022, but they too have been hard at work preparing for their exams.

This month, we celebrated Diwali at RCP, with the boys and staff putting on performances for the rest of us! Spearheaded by Dr. Shruti, the event was a fun affair for all to witness!

Diwali is a time for family and community, and our RFYC family came together to celebrate with each other during this festival of lights! In other good news, the boys have finally started offline classes this month! Students from 8th to 12th standards have all started going to school. But, as always, we have made sure to impress upon them the need for strict social distancing and taking adequate safety precautions while interacting with their friends from outside Beverly Park.

Tell us a little about yourself. I suppose the first thing anyone who meets me realises is that I love this sport. I've wanted to be a footballer since I was 9. In 2015 i got the opportunity to be part of this reliance foundation young champs academy through trials, that was like the best I could ever get in India to fulfil my dream to be professional player.

The first two years were amazing, but then I suffered two serious injuries, after which I had to go through surgery to repair the damage. I went to Bengaluru United after RFYC, but it didn’t work out there for me and I realised that I wouldn’t be able to give my best as a player anymore. I had a great experience while I was at Young Champs, learned a lot about football and life as a whole, which has helped me immensely since I left the academy. Now I am back here not as a player but as a coach. This is an amazing opportunity and I couldn’t be more thankful to the management believing in me, and hopefully, we can take RFYC to new heights!

You've started your coaching journey at a very young age. How has the transition been for you? First it was very difficult to make this decision to be a coach at such a young age and I still wanted to keep playing as much as I could, but that didn’t work for me. Football is in my system, and I wanted to stay connected to the sport. So when this opportunity came, I was very happy and at the same time bit nervous. It’s a big deal to work for the best football academy in the country and it also comes with a lot of responsibilities. But having been a part of this academy for 4 years as a player , I knew how this academy works and that helped me transition into this role. It’s been great learning experience so far, but, as Frost said, I have miles to go before I sleep.

What does a typical day at the Academy look like for you? II have my basic routine which I follow everyday that really helps me to start my day on a great note. I try to get my workout done in the morning, then head to the daily meetings. Post lunch, I prep for the session that we going to do on the day, and we leave for the training at 3:30. Once the training is over, we have small discussion about the session, and try to get feedback. At the end of the day, I study my college courses, before preparing for the next day before bed!

What advice would you give anyone looking to get into your field? . I think one advice I would like to give is that while consistency is important, one shouldn't get burned out in that process of achieving their goals. As they say in Hindi, “Lambi race ka ghoda bano”. It's important to have your long term goals and work towards them every day. But to sustain momentum, we need to give ourselves a break every so often!

We'd love to hear from you. Please write to us at contact@rfyounchamps.org
