RVA Retailers Optimistic About 2016 Holiday Sales Alan Gayle, Director of Asset Allocation and Senior Investment Strategist at RidgeWorth Investments, joined us to discuss "The Ever-Evolving Economic Landscape" at the 2016 Economic Forecast Breakfast on September 9, which drew nearly 200 people to The Westin Richmond. In case you missed it, his presentation addressed the dot-com bubble and other factors that have had lingering effects on our current economy. He also spoke on various strains caused by the abrupt rise of the dollar's value. However, perhaps the biggest takeaway for retailers was that consumer spending

is reaching record levels, providing a "solid and sustainable" increase in job wages and today's housing market. Gayle predicted that this will have a positive impact on this year's holiday spending, especially in core retail sales. After the presentation, RMA turned to event attendees for their projections on 2016 holiday sales. The polling results were almost evenly split between HIGH and FLAT, meaning local RVA retailers are cautiously optimistic about sales during the upcoming holidays. The RMA team will be keeping a close eye on this throughout the season, with our fingers and toes crossed!

VRF LEGISLATIVE UPDATES

> >>> >> > COMING UP General Assembly Session

The 2017 General Assembly Session begins on January 11, 2017. This year is a short session that will only last 45 days. Each year the sessions switch from short to long (60 days); odd years are short and even years are long. Your VRF lobbyists, Jodi Roth and Kate Baker, will be at the Capitol representing your interests throughout the entire session. This year we expect many of the same issues that come up every year. These include: minimum wage increases, felony threshold, mandated paid sick leave, ABC issues, and much more. Please keep a look out for our weekly emails during Session; this is where we give you an in-depth look at what takes place during Session and which bills we are following on your behalf. You may also receive Legislative Alerts during this time. A Legislative Alert is when we ask for your help by making a phone call, sending an email, or coming to the Capitol to testify on an issue that impacts your business.

BE SURE TO MARK YOUR CALENDARS TUESDAY, NOV. 8TH IS ELECTION DAY. GET OUT THERE & VOTE!

Overtime Rule Changes DON’T FORGET! The new salary threshold for overtime is due to go into effect on Thursday, December 1, 2016, with automatic updates to the threshold every three years starting on Wednesday, January 1, 2020. A QUICK REFRESHER... The new salary threshold for overtime pay, set by the Department of Labor (DOL) earlier this year, will increase to $47,476 ($913/week). Long story short, this means that any employee (with a few exceptions) making below the $47,476 threshold will be entitled to overtime pay (i.e., time and a half) for any work done beyond their normal 40-hour work week. Please make sure that your business is prepared for this change and that you have updated your company policies with regard to overtime! See the full breakdown of these new changes on VirginiaRetailFederation.com. Still have a few lingering questions? Please contact Jodi Roth at 804.690.4940 or jroth@virginiaretailfederation.com.

2017 Legislative Reception Please save the date for the Legislative Reception on January 16, 2017. This event provides an opportunity to have face-time with your elected officials to discuss issues of importance for your business. 10 | Retail Partners | RetailMerchants.com | ThinkShopBuyLocal.com | Fall 2016

Keeping up with all the tasks that make your business successful is always a real challenge. Then along comes a new law or Government directive like Obamacare or the new employee overtime rules. If it wasn’t for the Retail Merchants Association, I’m not sure how I’d sort it all out. My membership allows me to run my business while the RMA breaks everything down and presents it in a language I can understand with real solutions. From seminars, to opportunities to socialize with other retailers, my RMA membership is more valuable to me today than ever before. - Bill Selden, President C.P. Dean Company

Honoring Our Area First Responders...

RMA NEWS & EVENTS

The 27th Annual Valor Awards are right around the corner! Due to the overwhelming community support over the years, we are thrilled to announce that this year we have expanded to all three ballrooms at the Greater Richmond Convention Center. This is an event that you do not want to miss! We invite you to register online today and join us in making this the biggest Valor Awards yet as we show our support to area First Responders from Ashland, Chesterfield, Goochland, Hanover, Henrico, Powhatan and Richmond as well as VCU Police, VUU Police, VSU Police, U of R Police, and J. Sergeant Reynolds Police. Your attendance is an expression of gratitude and you will walk out feeling inspired. Thank you to all of our sponsors of the Valor Awards as this event would not be possible without all of you! We hope to see you all at this year’s Valor Awards Breakfast Ceremony on Thursday, November 10, 2016 from 7:30-9:30 am.

The 100 Club The 100 Club has been a major supporter of the Annual Valor Awards as the Platinum Sponsor since 2010! They have also provided additional funding so that Police, Fire & EMS Academy graduates from each jurisdiction, college or university will receive a Table of 10 to attend this year's Valor Awards. Established in 1989 as a sub-association of Retail Merchants Association, The 100 Club is made up of a group of individuals whose mission is to provide financial support to Richmond area law enforcement, firefighter and emergency medical service professionals and their families in times of crisis suffered on the job. Each member of The 100 Club contributes $100 every year to fund approved requests made by jurisdictions in the city of Richmond, the town of Ashland, and the counties of Henrico, Chesterfield, Hanover, Goochland and Powhatan. Charitable gifts may be awarded to provide financial assistance for the education of dependents of a safety responder who has been killed or permanently disabled in the line of duty. In addition, contributions may be approved for the support of programs that benefit first responders in their jobs. James Hatcher, President of The 100 Club, and the Retail Merchants Association encourage everyone to consider joining The 100 Club. If you are interested, please call Len East, The 100 Club Secretary, at 804.359.1709 or visit the RMA website and look for “Beyond Retail” to join online.
