THE CERTAINTY OF CHANGE

Aprevalent attitude is growing around many of us as we enter 2024. A low-level hum of anxiety, a sense of worry or concern about the ever-present ‘what if’ that is a part of human life. Some articulate this as tangible concerns, such as “I’m not sure what is happening with our US economy,” “I am not sure what is occurring with the mind-body-spirit industry,” “I am worried about the election this year,” “I can’t seem to manage my stress like I used to,” “I don’t know what to do about.......” and the what-if list of questions goes on.

Is it that there are more ‘question marks’ hanging over this calendar year? Or is it that we are drained by the strange and mentally exhausting occurrences of the past few years, including our voyage through COVID-19, which in many ways at least temporarily stopped the forward trajectory of our lives?

Change and uncertainty can be challenging for those who crave more stability in their personal and business lives. Our fear of uncertainty can interfere with trusting our intuition, making life or business decisions, and our inner serenity. It can impact our sleep and our overall health. Some close friends are experiencing a deepening sense of loss and a lack of overall trust in almost everything.

Worry and concern are also plaguing our youth, with childhood anxiety disorder on the rise to what some psychologists see as an epidemic. If you are empathic, as most of us are, the presence of what one of our authors calls ‘the invisible riptide’ can be extra hard, as we are picking up on the sea of emotions around us as we swim each day in what she also calls ‘the emotional current of the world.’

At least in the United States, our outward fearlessness, once a hallmark of

US nationalism, was primarily based on a solid belief that our government would handle most of the big problems. In my extended crowd of friends and family, nearly all no longer hold this belief. Many are beginning to recognize and articulate that that premise was never true. And this scares them even more.

So, how can we navigate the river of daily uncertainty? Have we forgotten how to manage change, which is a true constant in anyone’s life experience? Have we forgotten how to be comfortable with ‘not knowing?”

In metaphysical terms, we can fi rst pull out our ‘toolbox.’ Many of us will fi nd a core meditation practice as a starting point. We can buy some crystals. We can fi nd moments during the day to stop and re-focus ourselves. We can use sound therapy, listening to recordings that re-align our chakras and heal us at a deep and unseen level. We can up our nutritional game by eating a more nutritionally dense diet. We can adapt habits to improve our sleep. The list goes on.

But anyone can do several other things to reprogram themselves from the inside out, no matter what your beliefs.

The fi rst is to absolutely and limitlessly embrace

not merely accept– the idea that change and uncertainty are a part of human life. No matter where you live on the planet, change and uncertainty are a part of your day. Choosing this as a part of life means accepting and even embracing this dynamic in the same way we accept and embrace that the weather will change. It’s just

a part of life, right? We are reframing how we see change and uncertainty, giving it a much smaller role in our life play.

Embracing uncertainty means it can no longer dominate your thinking and emotions. Accepting it as a given means you no longer need to give it power. We can smile at and greet our fears as we do the sunrise and then move forward to live with greater freedom. Fear no longer has a stranglehold over our decisions. We can name it or greet it as an old companion as we turn toward other things. I sometimes say aloud, “Oh, there you are,” as I choose to disempower my thoughts by simply accepting it as something that is – a possibility, not necessarily a probability. Eventually, it will be something that was. After all, most things we worry about, or fear, will never come to pass!

Another valuable way to disengage yourself from this turmoil is to raise your vibrational level by having more fun. What makes you smile or laugh? What things do you truly enjoy? Do you like painting, hiking or skiing, cooking, writing, playing music, or spending time with animal companions? What pulls your internal compass point in a different direction? Whatever invokes your true north, where happiness and serenity live, move toward that.

More than escapism

this is an active choice to choose a different dynamic and way of living. When we are engaging in what we enjoy, we need not force our thoughts away from what worries or scares us; instead, we choose to live in a different ‘place.’ Eventually, those joyful or fulfi lling times will forge themselves together as a vibrant chain that will

become the constant in your life, not the exception.

Finally, once we accept change and uncertainty as simply another facet of human life, don’t keep swimming in the same pool of fear. I made a conscious decision four years ago to stop watching the nightly news, which, more often than not, lacks credibility anyway. The nightly news is generally framed in the negative, with the scariest or most titillating stories up fi rst. This is how news franchises keep up their ratings – by creating uncertainty or fear that keeps many of us coming back for more. I still scan headlines on the internet but very, very rarely actually read the stories. When you start to rate the headlines by their ability to cause internal churning, you will probably laugh at how obvious it really is. Most headlines are spun for fear and talk about things we can’t control. The one thing we can control is our decision to engage. Next time a headline catches your eye, ask yourself why.

I made a conscious decision recently to be more aware of creeping doubt and worry over the future and instead to give my energy to things I had turned into ‘big problems.’ Yes, they still creep in at times, but rather than giving them the helm, I am choosing to laugh and let go more often and more successfully. I send them down a lovely babbling brook in my mind, a cute little paper sailboat riding on top. And then I might decide to make a batch of oatmeal cookies or play with the cat. I’m not avoiding or escaping; I am just letting myself out of the prison of my mind.

ADAPTING TO THE SHIFT: A COMPREHENSIVE GUIDE FOR RETAILERS IN A CHANGING LANDSCAPE

Hey, retailers, let’s get real... The retail world is spinning, veering from the traditional in-store experience to the online hustle. We’ve witnessed this transformation, and I’m here to guide you through embracing change within your store. This journey is all about the nitty-gritty – why the shift is happening, the hurdles you might face, and, most importantly, how to not just survive but thrive in this everchanging retail era.

UNDERSTANDING THE SHIFT: WHY THE MOVE AWAY FROM IN-STORE?

So, what’s driving this migration away from the brick-and-mortar charm?

It’s a nuanced dance of evolving consumer behaviors, primarily fueled by the craving for convenience and the influence of online shopping trends. In an era where mobile devices have become an extension of one’s self,

your customers are breaking free from traditional shopping habits; they seek the flexibility to browse, compare, and make purchases from the comfort of their favorite chair, often via the convenience of their smartphones or other mobile devices.

However, navigating this shift is more than just an issue of convenience. It’s about tapping into a local audience while recognizing the broader influence of digital interactions. Embracing social media to promote in-store opportunities means forging connections with individuals who may have never considered shopping with you online. It’s crucial to understand that these local engagements often have roots in online interactions.

And let’s not overlook the financial aspect – the in-store game is more expensive than having an online store. Rent and utilities create a big overhead, but the online store not only provides cost savings but also holds the potential to propel your business to new heights in both the physical and digital realms. So, let’s get ready to roll up our sleeves and delve into the strategies that will make this shift a game-changer for your store, building community, creating one-of-a-kind experiences, as well as embracing the interconnected nature of in-store and online experiences.

UNDERSTANDING LOCAL CUSTOMER BEHAVIOR

Think of consumer behavior like a river – always moving and shaping how people shop. With the rise of online shopping and tech trends, that river has changed its course. To make sense of it all, imagine your local market as the

map, and understanding these changes is like having a reliable guidebook.

In simpler terms, your customers aren’t static; they flow with the current of what’s trendy and convenient. Adapting to this retail river means keeping an eye on what’s happening globally, staying tech-savvy, and getting involved in your community. It’s not just about knowing the numbers; it’s about grasping the vibe of your neighborhood, its unique flavor, and how digital interactions influence your in-store game. So, grab that paddle, read the currents, and navigate your way to success in the ever-changing world of retail.

Pro Tips:

Connect Locally:

Immerse yourself in the community’s heartbeat. Dive into local events, chat with your neighbors, and absorb the unique flavor of your neighborhood. It’s not just about selling products; it’s about understanding what your community values. If there’s a local fair, be there. If there’s a charity event, support it. The more woven into the community fabric you are, the more your store becomes a trusted part of local life. In short, be a neighbor first and a retailer second.

Enhance In-Store Experience:

Transform your store into a local haven. Picture it as more than a place to shop—it’s a destination. Create an atmosphere that people want to step into, linger, and enjoy. Think about what makes your neighborhood special and infuse it into your store.

Personalize your services, so that

when customers walk in, they feel like they’re among friends. Your staff? They’re not just employees; they’re the welcoming faces of your friendly neighborhood store. Make shopping an experience, not just a transaction. After all, a welcoming ambiance turns shoppers into regulars, and that’s the heartbeat of local success.

HARNESSING LOCAL REACH AND ACCESSIBILITY

The modern retail scene is a tapestry woven with the threads of local markets. It’s not just about a physical storefront; it’s about becoming an integral part of the intricate fabric that is your community. Staying committed to your in-store presence is like anchoring your business in the values and preferences that define your locale. Dive into the cultural nuances, the traditions, and the ever-changing trends that make your community unique. Recognizing that each neighborhood has its unique rhythm is the key to unlocking the full potential of your in-store venture.

Pro Tips: Local Partnerships:

Forge alliances with fellow local businesses. It’s not just about transactions; it’s about creating a network of support. Collaborate on joint promotions or events that benefit both parties. The idea is to build a sense of community among local businesses and, in turn, foster loyalty among locals. If there’s a nearby café or bookstore, consider cross-promotions. These partnerships amplify your store’s visibility and create

12 | RETAILING INSIGHT March-April 2024

a win-win situation for everyone involved.

Tailor Marketing Strategies:

Dive deep into the essence of your local market. Every community is a unique ecosystem, with its values, preferences, and trends. Analyze the specific needs of your neighborhood and tailor your marketing strategies accordingly. Whether it’s a cultural celebration, a local tradition, or an upcoming event, align your promotions with what resonates locally. Understanding the heartbeat of your community allows you to fine-tune your offerings, making your store not just a shopping destination but an integral part of local life.

Flexibility and Innovation:

The ability to respond promptly to changing local circumstances is a hallmark of a successful local retailer. Cultivate an agile business model that adapts to the evolving trends of your community. Encourage creativity within your team, fostering an environment where innovative ideas are not just welcomed but actively sought. Embracing flexibility and innovation positions your store as a trendsetter rather than a follower, allowing you to test and implement new ideas that resonate with the unique tastes and preferences of your community. It’s not just about keeping up with trends; it’s about setting them and becoming a beacon that

draws your community closer to the heart of your store.

PRIORITIZING CUSTOMER TRUST

In the landscape of in-store commerce, where transactions unfold in the tangible space of face-to-face interactions, trust emerges as the invaluable currency that weaves the fabric of customer relationships. However, trust is not a mere strategic choice; it’s a steadfast commitment to principles that go beyond the conventional norms of business. At its core, building and maintaining trust is a journey marked by transparency, unwavering security measures, and the relentless pursuit of delivering

an unparalleled customer service experience.

Pro Tips:

Honest Communication:

Transparency is the cornerstone of trust in the in-store setting. Clear and honest communication builds trust, ensuring that customers have a straightforward understanding of your operations, policies, and values. From prominently displayed return and refund policies to transparent communication about ethical product sourcing, the more transparent your business practices, the more trust you instill in your customers. In a world where skepticism often shrouds consumer decisions, being forthright becomes a beacon that guides customers through the maze of choices.

Exceptional Customer Service:

In the in-store landscape, customer service is not a transactional exchange; it’s a genuine commitment to elevating the overall shopping experience. The heartbeat of trust lies in the way your staff engages with customers, offering assistance, guidance, and a welcoming atmosphere. Training your team to go above and beyond in providing exceptional service becomes a cornerstone of the trust-building process. A knowledgeable and friendly staff doesn’t just facilitate transactions; they create memorable experiences that resonate with customers, ensuring they not only return but become vocal advocates for your store within the community. Trust, in this context, is not a one-time achievement but an ongoing

relationship nurtured through each positive interaction.

SOCIAL MEDIA: BRIDGING THE GAP BETWEEN DIGITAL AND IN-STORE PRESENCE

In the evolving landscape of retail, social media stands not just as a megaphone but as a dynamic conversation platform that can bridge the gap between the digital realm and your in-store presence. As we navigate the intricate dance of the modern retail era, understanding the pivotal role of social media becomes paramount for local retailers aiming to weave a vibrant tapestry of community engagement and in-store allure.

Pro Tips:

Choose the Right Platforms:

Identifying the social media platforms that resonate most with your local audience becomes the compass for steering your digital narrative. Whether it’s the visually captivating allure of Instagram, the communitycentric vibe of Facebook, the fun and informative vibe of Tiktok, or the concise and real-time updates on Threads, aligning your content with the preferences of your community is the first stride towards establishing a compelling online presence. Share not just the products but the stories behind them, offering glimpses into the heart and soul of your store.

Host Online-to-Offline Events:

Social media isn’t just a digital bulletin board; it’s a catalyst for real-world experiences. Leverage these platforms to orchestrate online-to-offline events that amplify the anticipation for

14 | RETAILING INSIGHT March-April 2024

in-store moments. From exclusive promotions and sales to community gatherings, use your digital megaphone to create a buzz that transcends screens, enticing customers to step into your physical space. The goal is not just digital engagement but converting those online interactions into foot traffic within your store.

Stay Connected:

Being an integral part of your community isn’t confined to the physical walls of your store. Extend your presence into the digital realm by actively participating in local conversations on social media platforms. Engage with your community by sharing timely updates, participating in discussions, and offering valuable insights. By being present in the

online spaces frequented by your residents, your store remains not just a brick-and-mortar entity but a dynamic and ever-evolving member of the local dialogue.

Build Relationships:

Social media is more than a promotional tool; it’s a space for building genuine relationships. Respond promptly to customer comments, engage in conversations, and infuse your brand with a human touch. Share not only your products but the personality behind your store. The stronger and more authentic your online presence, the more likely it is that customers will not only follow your digital journey but actively seek out the in-store experience. Social media becomes a conduit for building a community around your brand, with loyal customers transforming into vocal advocates who amplify your store’s narrative within the local sphere. As you embrace the power of social media, remember, it’s not just about followers; it’s about forging connections that extend beyond the screen, guiding customers seamlessly from the digital realm into the heart of your store.

THE BENEFITS OF OMNICHANNEL SELLING: BRIDGING IN-STORE AND ONLINE EXPERIENCES

In the intricate tapestry of modern retail, the concept of omnichannel selling emerges as a powerful thread weaving together the realms of instore and online experiences. While

RETAILING INSIGHT March-April 2024 | 15

your physical store remains the heart of your retail endeavors, embracing omnichannel strategies can extend its pulsating beat into the digital sphere, offering customers a seamless journey that effortlessly transitions between the tangible and the virtual.

Pro Tips: Unified Inventory Management:

Central to the success of omnichannel selling is the integration of your in-store and online inventory systems into a harmonious symphony. This ensures that the information regarding product availability resonates accurately across both domains. No more disappointments due to discrepancies between online listings and in-store offerings. Your customers, whether exploring your digital shelves or wandering through the aisles of your physical store, will encounter a consistent and reliable reflection of your product offerings.

Online Ordering with In-Store Pickup:

Embrace the evolving shopping habits of your local clientele by offering the best of both worlds. Introduce online ordering with the added flexibility of in-store pickup. This hybrid approach caters not only to the segment of your audience who relish the tactile experience of in-store shopping but also to those who appreciate the convenience of online transactions. By seamlessly melding the digital checkout with the tangible handover of products within your store, you elevate the convenience quotient while ensuring your physical space remains an integral part of the transaction process

Leverage Customer Data:

As a local retailer, your strength lies in knowing your customers, both online and in-store. Leverage the treasure trove of customer data gathered from both realms to craft personalized and targeted offerings. Analyze insights gleaned from online interactions and in-store transactions to make informed decisions about product placement, promotions, and the overall customer experience. Tailor your approach based on the preferences and behaviors exhibited by your customers, ensuring that each interaction, whether digital or physical, feels like a bespoke journey crafted exclusively for them.

As you embark on the omnichannel journey, remember that it’s not just about navigating between online and instore channels; it’s about creating a unified and seamless

experience that resonates with the diverse preferences of your local audience. The benefits extend beyond the transaction; they encompass the creation of a cohesive narrative that seamlessly integrates your store into the daily lives of your customers, fostering a connection that transcends the boundaries of the physical and the digital.

NAVIGATING THE EVER-CHANGING RETAIL LANDSCAPE

In the kaleidoscope of modern retail, where the traditional in-store experience collides with the digital wave, local retailers face both challenges and opportunities. This guide has been a journey into the heart of this transformation, uncovering strategies to not just survive but thrive in the dynamic retail ecosystem.

As you navigate the nuances of local customer behavior, harness the power of social media, and embrace the benefits of omnichannel selling, remember this: your store is not just a place of transactions; it’s a vital thread in the rich tapestry of your community. By connecting locally, adapting to emerging trends, and fostering trust, your store becomes more than a retail space; it becomes a cornerstone of community life.

In times when retail landscapes shift and consumer behaviors evolve, the essence of local retail remains resilient. Your store, with its unique personality and connection to the community, is well-equipped to weather the changes. So, embrace the challenges, seize the opportunities, and know that amidst the shifting sands of retail, your store can not only endure but thrive, remaining a beacon of resilience and community spirit in the ever-changing retail market. SOLITUDE: THE KEY TO A HAPPIER LIFE

Excerpts from the book Alone Time

What I have gained over years of education, mental health training and lived experience is what I put forward in this book so that you can start living well in a changing world. First off, I am a mother: a devoted one at that. Second, I took too many years to count to ultimately become an expert, a professor of psychology. Years of caregiving, combined with scholarly research in child development not to mention numerous trials and errors, kept my significant others nicely treading above water and thriving. I am also a registered psychologist trained in cognitive behavioural therapy and third-wave therapies. I work tirelessly

with children, adolescents and adults. I help individuals and families and people of diverse backgrounds with diverse matters. Students who come to hear my lectures and clients who seek counselling know well enough the importance I place on private space. I depend on it to help me and my people work comfortably on issues together. I promote well-being by practicing mindfulness and acceptance and by teaching clients and students the value of reflection and calm. Advice shared heartedly with my followers can be summed up as follows:

You can change how you feel by changing the way you think about people and things.

About the Author: Sybil Geldart, PhD is an associate professor of psychology at Wilfrid Laurier University.  Dr. Geldart has been teaching for more than 28 years.  She is trained in cognitive behavioural therapy and mindfulness-based therapeutic approaches for adults, adolescents and children. Both in teaching and clinical practice, Dr. Geldart equips adults and young people with a toolbox of coping and life skills to help deal with the many stressors we all face at work and school.

You can improve your mood by eliminating unhelpful behaviours and starting healthy ones.

You can accept adversity as being a normal part of the life course yet remain strong and hopeful.

These words ought to be conveyed not only to those who wrestle with mental health concerns but to everybody reading this now – a reminder that positive change originates from within. You can change yourself.

ALONE TIME

For many people it is hard to think of good reasons to spend more time alone. In general, people of all ages tend to carry negative thoughts and feelings about distancing and solitude. I have done so in the past, and I wouldn’t be surprised if you too have had negative perceptions of purposefully being alone. In modern Western society, being in the presence of other people is the norm. It’s what we do in all facets of life: work, leisure and so on. Not having people around us might make us look as though we have been rejected or isolated from the social group. The idea that someone deliberately wants to be separate from others can give the impression that they are somehow abnormal or weird compared with other people, and maybe unhappy or depressed. It is fascinating that we all learn to become social and to value social connections from a very young age. Given the emphasis on social connectivity, do you personally have any of these perceptions about spending more time alone?

COMMON PERCEPTIONS ABOUT BEING IN SOLITUDE

ɒ Loneliness

ɒ Unhappiness

ɒ Vulnerability to painful memories

ɒ Feelings of distress

ɒ Isolation

ɒ Rejection

Solitude is often seen as something negative, but it should be seen as something positive. Despite the negative connotation of solitude, there is in fact much value in being alone. Let’s see why. Read below and you will see that some solitude and quiet will bring on self-awareness, independent thinking and more positive thinking. Ironically, solitude can make you feel more emotionally connected to other people rather than make you feel separate or disconnected, which is what a lot of people assume happens when they are away from the crowd.

SOLITUDE DOES NOT KEEP YOU DISCONNECTED

THINK ABOUT THIS: You can be in a room full of friends and loving family members yet feel lonely, sad and highly anxious or agitated. Therefore, it is not accurate to assume or profess that loneliness equals being alone. It is tempting to see distancing and connectedness as polar opposites or two ends of a spectrum because being detached from the outside world might result in you being

disconnected from others, but being alone and being lonely are not one and the same. Making yourself stay alone for a short period of time indicates you have consciously decided to distance yourself from outside stimulation. It is a deliberate action on your part to stay grounded within yourself and let external forces slip away, and it is a positive behaviour intended to bring about positive outcomes.

SOLITUDE AND SELFAWARENESS

Purposefully separating yourself from other people gives you an opportunity to look carefully within. Being alone gives you the chance to think about yourself and your needs and goals without undue pressure, distractions or interference. You might agree with what I just said but then turn around and tell me you are way too busy right now to make time for yourself. I get it: your calendar is already full and your mind is overloaded with important things to do. I’ve been there, trust me. Let me repeat: taking time to be on your own and think about you – and no one else – is vital for personal growth. When you voluntarily distance yourself from outside stimulation and the multitude of forces that surround your being you truly get to know who you are and where you want to be. I like to remind us all that we live in a fast-paced society, and that because of this it is easy to get caught up with the external world and learn how to make things happen efficiently and effortlessly. The faster things get done the more we can take on next time, and the more automatic thinking becomes. All of these actions are commonplace in a break-neck, highly stimulating world but now is the time to put on the brakes, to slow

20 | RETAILING INSIGHT March-April 2024

things right down. In the presence of some private space away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life you will find it easier to think about personal goals and decide whether you are anywhere close to achieving them. You will be more self-aware, and the bonus is that you can change your current goals and path in your life course so you become happier and more satisfied. Just face it: if you happen to be a busy person like I am then the more you need some alone time.

SOLITUDE AND INDEPENDENT THINKING

It is obvious to say but I will do it anyway: you’ve lived with yourself

your entire life, and because of this you ought to know yourself better than anyone else. Sometimes it is good to be on your own and make decisions for yourself without being influenced by other people. I realize it is not always easy being independent and confident in your own decision-making, especially in a digital era of constant connectivity. Besides, we live in a business world where productive think-tanks and non-hierarchical group problem-solving are encouraged in the workplace. Group effort is pushed even before the start of a career as high school teachers and college instructors teach us the power of collaborative decision making and wholesome solidarity and teamwork. Being with others, working with others and learning from others is prized, but that doesn’t mean you can’t do things independently or think things in a

unique way for your own good. I used to be terribly uncomfortable doing things alone and figuring things out on my own. As an only child, I was raised by devoted parents and an over-attentive, Italian-speaking grandmother hovering over me every waking minute. It was suffocating receiving constant protection and direction, yet thoughtful and heavenly at the same time. Not surprisingly, I grew up having difficulty making it on my own. I relied on steadfast emotional support from la familia . Even now I find myself uneasy – mentally lost, actually – when physically separated from the faithful cell phone, unfailing social media and friendly social support. 2024 MIND-BODYSPIRIT INDUSTRY SURVEY

in partnership with Retailing Insight Magazine

The Coalition of Visionary Resources and Retailing Insight Magazine recently updated their 2018 Mind Body Spirit Industry Survey, a study intended to capture the current and changing dynamics of the industry and to help industry members know more about how customers of the industry are changing in both their purchasing and other demographics. The goal was to provide insight for industry members as they select inventory and how members are changing to accommodate the evolving dynamics of this industry.

About the Author: Karen Stuth is the co-owner of Satiama Publishing and former president of COVR. Before founding Satiama Publishing she worked for more than 20 years in the market research and information industry as a senior vice-president in two of the world’s largest marketing consultancy companies, including Taylor Nelson Sofres and Synovate. Her team conducted research for the world’s largest brands in most areas of business research and competitive intelligence. Brand and product development research were major areas of her research specialties.

THE PARTICIPANTS

Who Were the Study Participants?

156 qualified to take the survey, selfreporting as retailers, distributors, vendors, publishers, or manufacturers working in the mind-body-spirit industry and selling a mix of products to other retailers or the general public. 100% of qualifying participants answered every question.

Participants were primarily decisionmakers for their business organizations. 69% were owners, and 21% were buyers. More than 80% had longevity in their roles. 35% had been in their role for more than 10 years, followed by 22% for 6 to 10 years and 23% for more than 20 years. This indicates a participant base with experience and longevity in the industry.

The survey took 8 minutes on average to complete. Most participants were from the United States, but the United Kingdom and Australia were also significantly represented. List sources included COVR members, Retailing Insight Magazine subscribers, and Wishing Well.

Most participants were from businesses with 2 to 5 employees (33%), and another 31% had no employees. The largest segment of participants worked in businesses that made $49,000 or less per year, at 25%, and another 17% worked in businesses that made $200K to $399K per year. 39%.

Four in ten participants (40%) were COVR members 15% belonged to their local Chamber of Commerce, and 11% percent belonged to the International Book Publishers Association, but a significant minority

did not belong to any of the listed organizations, at 42%.

Because of the relatively small sample size of qualified and completed surveys, the empirical data should also be considered both quantitatively and qualitatively. ‘Quantitative’ means the results are described in numbers (how much, how many) by percentages, but should also be considered ‘qualitatively,’ meaning it can help us to understand why, how, or what happened behind certain behaviors or results, similar to focus group results.

Many of the questions in the study allowed multiple-choice answers; as a result, the totals reported add up to more than 100%. Only the top five or sometimes six most important answers are described below to keep the emphasis on majority results.

CHANGES IN THE MBS INDUSTRY

How is Business Changing in the MBS Industry?

Asked how their business has changed in the past three years, participants were allowed to choose multiple factors. The top five answers are interesting. 41% are doing fewer events, 40% believe their customer base has grown, 38% are also now selling online, 35% report a decline in sales, 29% report a moderately changing inventory mix, and 28% find their customers are spending less.

This result suggests that online shopping and spending has become more significant in the MBS industry. While we don’t know if the decrease in spending reported by retailers also

means a shift is occurring toward spending more online instead, it does underscore the importance to retailers of having a website that includes an online store and shopping cart. It also begs the question of whether more customers would participate in events that are offered online or streamed through social media rather than in person. Nearly 3 in 10 have changed their inventory mix, likely to meet the needs of a customer base that is increasingly more mainstream.

GROWTH & DECLINE IN THE MBS BUSINESS

What is Driving Growth or Decline Among MBS Businesses?

A significant majority say the mind body spirit industry is becoming more mainstream (64%), but participants also reported they are more present on social media (42%), 21% have changed their marketing mix, and, at 16% each, participants say their customers find products on Amazon but purchase from their business, they are holding more events, and they have added a website. Multiple answers were allowed.

Conversely, those MBS businesses which are declining are facing growing costs. This includes the increasing overall cost of doing business (58%), the increasing cost of overhead (39%), their perception that the economy is declining (36%) and a declining return on marketing investment (21%). They also reported other factors, including that the MBS industry is becoming more mainstream

26 | RETAILING INSIGHT March-April 2024

and more competition from same or similar businesses (27%).

We can see from these results that many retailers and qualified participants are already changing their marketing mix, including more presence on social media, to meet their evolving and mainstreaming customer ‘where they live.’ It also underscores the importance of competing in price against Amazon and other large or similar websites. Those that give their in-store customers a reason to purchase from them instead of from Amazon will likely win the purchase. This points to sellers’ active use of customer loyalty and brand loyalty programs.

MBS Sales by Category

For industry members, perhaps what is most interesting is what MBS customers choose to buy in today’s market. Participants were asked to describe sales in pre-selected categories as either Upward, Steady, or Downward. Only one answer was allowed per product category. Top Upward sales categories included tarot decks and gems, stones, and minerals, at 28% and 27%, followed by books, jewelry, and wiccan products, at 23% each.

Top ‘Steady’ sales categories included books (40%), jewelry and meditation products (35% each), and other card decks and home and garden accessories (31% each.)

‘Downward’ sales categories included music (25%), books, 23%, angel and fairy products (21%), and astrology, health and massage products, and feng shui products (18% each.)

CUSTOMER BASE

Is the MBS Customer Base Changing?

MBS customers themselves are also changing. Participants reported that 44% are shopping more online, 42% are seeking more MBS knowledge, 41% are more price sensitive, 30% are spending less per transaction, and 20% say more customers are younger.

One of the impacts of a more mainstream customer base is that their information needs might differ from customers in the past. Knowing and understanding what they want to learn about will be key to knowing what to stock in inventory and how to attract today’s customers to purchase from you. This might be assessed through analyzing sales, short customer surveys, or even in-depth conversations with your customers. The old but true adage – ‘find out what they want and give them more of that’ strongly applies.

Which Product Categories Have Most Grown or Declined in Sales in the Past Three Years?

The product category of greatest growth was gems, rocks, and minerals, at 32%, followed by books, at 31%.

Growth in the jewelry category was reported at 27%, followed by all card decks at 25%, and psychic readings at 20%.

Category declines in growth were seen in music (27%), artwork and statuary (23%) books (21%) angel and fairy products (18%), and yoga products, giftware, and greeting cards (14% each.)

Decline and growth in the categories included in the study support the changing and mainstreaming customer within the MBS industry, who are more likely to be in a newer place in their learning curve and seeking tools and titles that feel most accessible to them at that stage. MBS sellers should consider this factor when making decisions about adding or removing product lines.

How and Through What Channels Do Participants Want to Improve Their Business Skills and Knowledge?

Participants were asked what types of business information they would like to access to grow their business. A substantial 71% wanted more information about social media, 64% desired information about marketing and advertising, 60% wanted to learn more about industry trends, 39% would like information about national and global social trends, and 40% also wanted to obtain more information about SEO and website development skills.

7 in 10 participants wanted to receive business training or information through webinars (74%), while 50% wanted to obtain it through live seminars or courses. 47% would read suggested books for the same or similar industry professionals, 45% would like to receive mentoring with a professional or expert, and 42% would like access to an article bank. However, 17% said they didn’t have time for professional development activities, and 12% didn’t believe they needed any professional development.

These responses suggest that most MBS sellers want to learn business skills that help them to be more competitive. This includes better, more skillful use of social media marketing, use of a fully optimized website including SEO, and more interest in global social trends as part of recognizing their ability to serve a customer base that is not merely regional. They also prefer delivery methods that make no demand on their professional time when their stores or businesses might be open. Therefore, they are most interested in webinars that most often can be viewed later, seminars or courses that likely would offer the same dynamic, and books they can read when they are not open for business.

Sharing Peace tHrouGH M usic

MEDITATION, YOGA, MANTRA, TONING OUR CULTURAL DEBT OF GRATITUDE TO INDIA

In the early ‘70s while living in Manhattan, Dean and I came across Autobiography of a Yogi. In sharing his personal story, Indian yoga master Paramahansa Yogananda had shown us a spiritual world that we had no idea existed in the very materialistic modern society we were raised in. Around that time, we also discovered Integral Yoga Hatha , a book by Swami Satchidananda, the guru who made a splash at the Woodstock Festival when he opened the festival sitting in full lotus and

telling the crowd that “music is the celestial sound that controls the whole universe.” Even though he was young in comparison to us now, we were impressed to see this elderly man doing astonishing yoga postures. We emulated the poses from the book as best we could and later took yoga classes at his center in the West Village.

Yoga became a pathway to the spirit for us. We learned the postures and practiced them at home, but in

classes, we also learned about meditation and breath control. We were swept up in the ubiquitous OM that often followed the physical poses. Something very powerful occurred when we allowed our breath to carry a sound and we began to realize the depth of our spiritual nature.

In 1973, we attended our fi rst Ram Dass lecture in the town of Woodstock where we lived at the time. He taught us the mantra – OM Mani Padme Hum. Former Harvard Professor and psychedelic experimenter Ram Dass (aka Richard Alpert) was a cultural icon himself known for his popular book Be Here Now and for his humorous way of sharing spiritual teachings and stories of living in India with his guru Neem Karoli Baba. We attended many of his lectures over the years, but it was in 1979 when he asked us to record his talk in Tucson, Arizona, that we were motivated to form our own record label to distribute recordings. We launched Soundings of the Planet with five cassette tapes including his lecture and our own peaceful, nature-based music.

Fast-forward to the 21st century, we were living in the Pacific Northwest and our company was well-established with the peace through music offerings we had been creating for decades. We had discovered the healing power of sound and music and for many years traveled and taught sound healing workshops that included what we were learning about the healing aspects of music, meditation, and vocal toning.

Awareness of the chakras had of course originated in India and our album Chakra Healing reflected our growing understanding of the energy centers that govern various aspects of our being. Later we created Chakra Meditations & Tones which combined our music with my guided meditations specific to each chakra as well

as vocal toning featuring four-octave singer Beth Quist.

Our connection with the Indian culture deepened in 2002 when we met Deobrat Mishra, a 25-year-old sitarist from Varanasi, India. We invited him to add his tasteful sitar to an album Dean was just fi nishing up with Scott Huckabay called Mountain Meadow Meditation. It turned out Deobrat Mishra was from a long lineage of spiritual musicians based in the holy city of Varanasi (also known as Benares) on the sacred Ganges River in northern India.

The following year, he returned to Bellingham with his father Pandit Shivnath Mishra who was also his sitar teacher and guru. For 17 years, we produced their concerts and workshops in our town. We also recorded their album Raga Cycle featuring their dueling sitars. The Mishras take traditional ragas and perform their own remarkable improvisational compositions, adding a spirited call and response dynamic to their exquisite musical forms.

Lately, Deobrat has toured with his nephew Prashant Mishra on tablas. In addition to their concerts and workshops, we produced their album Yoga Mantra featuring Deobrat’s exquisite voice singing the ‘Gayatri Mantra’ and other ancient chants. Dean Evenson

added his silver flute to this international collaboration.

The Mishras use proceeds from their albums and tours to raise money for scholarships at their Mishra School of Music which they founded to benefit children of indigent Indian musicians to study and keep alive the classical Indian music traditions. Because it is difficult for a musician to earn a living in India, many musicians had moved into other professions, and the rich cultural lineage of their ancestry was being lost. Fortunately, Deobrat Mishra continues to perform and teach traditional Indian music both in India, on European and American tours, and online. His son and daughter are now contributing members of this musical family. The music they all create together transports the listener on a river of musical communion that spans millennia, as vibrant in these living hands as it was in the hands of the ancient masters, a rare glimpse into the timeless universality of sacred music.

ACHIEVING HEALING AND SUCCESS

The concept of success is exalted in Western society. Often, it carries with it the associations of work, achievement, and the systematic ticking off of tasks from our to-do lists. While there’s certainly nothing wrong with “getting things done”, this linear definition of success often leads to energetic depletion.

The paradox of energetic depletion is that in the pursuit of giving your all, you may inadvertently lose touch with your own sense of enoughness. The societal narratives of constant productivity and achievement contribute to this illusion, leading you down a path where the more you

give, the more you question your own adequacy. It’s a silent struggle, often veiled behind the façade of outward success.

This isn’t to say that genuine success and tangible achievements are mutually exclusive; in fact, both are fully possible. By undergoing an internal reframing of the very definition of success, and subsequently aligning your actions with a new, heartcentered perspective, you lay the groundwork for a life that is not only more satisfying, but also authentic.

The essence of true success is remarkably uncomplicated. At its core, true success transcends the

conventional, often work- or productivity-related markers. The essence of success, through a broader lens, lies within your ability to take care of yourself in mind, body, and soul. It’s the ability to participate in your ongoing, ever-unfolding healing journey, in the spirit of becoming more and more yourself. In this context, success isn’t merely a checklist of external accomplishments, but a deeply personal odyssey towards internal fulfi llment and authenticity. This nuanced understanding sets the stage for a more profound exploration of what it means to achieve genuine success.

Understanding Anxiety’s Impact on Success

True, deep, and lasting success lies in the ability to work with your anxiety, not against it. In the hustle and bustle of our modern lives, anxiety has become an unwelcome companion for many, affecting not only our minds but also our physical and energetic bodies. When you’re able to unravel the complex interplay of anxiety in mind, body, and soul, you’ll be better equipped to navigate life’s complexities with a deeper sense of ease.

In a society that often oversimplifies mental health challenges, anxiety is frequently misunderstood. The expectations placed upon individuals to conform to societal norms of success can inadvertently contribute to the amplification of anxiety. The pursuit of external achievements, often celebrated and

rewarded, can create an environment where the pressure to meet these standards becomes a breeding ground for anxiety. Understanding anxiety, therefore, requires a nuanced exploration of its origins, recognizing the intricate interplay between societal expectations and your individual well-being.

It’s important to develop and understanding of how and where anxiety manifests in your life.

Awareness is a potent tool for success, and when you equip yourself with a deep, studied awareness of how you’re showing up, you become better positioned to transform patterns that no longer serve you. This self-awareness is a cornerstone of personal growth, offering a roadmap to navigate challenges and cultivate resilience.

Here are some journaling prompts that can deepen your awareness about how the anxiety of achievement manifests in your life:

Reflect on your definition of success:

– What does success mean to you personally?

Does your current definition of “success” create a feeling of anxiety, or a feeling of expansion? Why?

– What (or who) has influenced your perspective on success, and is that perspective holistically aligned with how you’d like to feel in your day-to-day life? –

List your core values. Are your current pursuits in alignment with these values?

Explore fear and anxiety:

– What specific fears or anxieties do you associate with achievement?

– When you feel anxiety or fear, where do you feel it in your body?

Pro tip:

the next time you’re feeling sensations of anxiety, practice taking deep, expansive inhales and exhales. Visualize your breath moving into the spaces in your body where you feel anxious, and imagine that with every exhale, you’re moving some of that anxious or fear-based energy out.

Identify Limiting Beliefs about your worth:

– Are there any beliefs about yourself that might be limiting your potential for holistic success? For example: “If I spend time taking care of myself, I’ll lose time that could be used for more productive tasks”, or “Prioritizing my well-being is selfish and hinders my professional success”.

– How can you challenge and reframe these limiting beliefs?

Celebrate Small, Holistic Wins:

– Reflect on a recent experience where you prioritized your mental and emotional wellbeing over the traditional idea of “success” or productivity. How did that make you feel?

– What lessons or reminders can you extract from those wins?

– Recall a past achievement that initially caused anxiety. How did you navigate through it?

– What strengths and strategies did you employ that can be applied to current concerns?

These prompts are designed to encourage self-reflection and provide a supportive space for exploring thoughts and feelings related to achievement and anxiety.

Moving Through the Anxiety

Redefining what success truly means to you is a great start, and your ability to support yourself as you expand into this new paradigm is just as important. A pivotal part of that expansion lies within your ability to self-regulate and nurture yourself when anxiety does come up.

For instance, if one of your previously held beliefs was ‘If I spend time taking care of myself, I’ll lose time that could be used for more productive tasks,’ it may take some time before your brain and body are fully on board with a new reframe, such as ‘Prioritizing self-care enhances my overall well-being, leading to increased productivity and creativity.’ This is because the physical body needs time to readjust, and the brain’s neural pathways take time to rewire.

The process of rewiring ingrained beliefs involves a rewiring of the very fabric of your thought patterns and physiological responses. Just as a muscle needs consistent training to grow stronger, your brain and body require repeated experiences of self-care to create lasting change. It’s a gradual journey of cultivating a new mindset and allowing your body to adapt to your new mindset on success.

Here’s a simple practice for you to try when you notice you’re feeling a little anxious and struggling to connect to a positive re-frame:

– Find a quiet or comfortable place to sit or lie down, and if possible, close the eyes to minimize external distractions.

– Begin taking deep, slow breaths in and out through the nose.

RETAILING INSIGHT March-April 2024 | 35

– Identify the thought or limiting belief that’s creating anxiety: Where is it in your body? How does it feel? For example: “I’m feeling anxious because there’s so much I need to get done right now. It feels like a weight on my chest, and also a bit of uncomfortable energy in my arms and legs.”

– Spend a few cycles of breath focused on acknowledging and releasing the feelings and sensations.

– Then, offer yourself a new replacement thought that feels more aligned with your reframed perspective on success. For example, “My pace is perfect. I am no less whole or worthy if I don’t get everything done today.”

– Repeat that phrase or mantra to yourself several times as you breathe.

When you feel ready, open the eyes and slowly return to your day.

The ability to practice deep breathing triggers somatic relaxation, which helps to get your body out of the anxiety-laden, fight-or-flight response. This shift is crucial for neural reprogramming: as your body enters the parasympathetic nervous system response, stress hormones decrease, heart rate slows, and muscles relax. This not only creates a sense of physical calm, it opens a window of opportunity for your brain to truly receive new thoughts and beliefs.

As you inhale and exhale, you send signals to your brain that you’re safe, which allows the brain to gradually let go of old thoughts and patterns associated with anxiety. By practicing this simple exercise, over time you’ll create a space where your mind is receptive to change, and your body is in a state conducive to adopting

thought patterns that better serve you. (If that’s not a symptom of success, I don’t know what is!)

Meeting Yourself With Compassion

Another crucial marker of success is your ability to offer yourself compassion in your day-to-day life – not just on the “good” days, but during the dark, challenging, or overwhelming days, too. You’ve got to meet where you’re at; accepting and acknowledging your current state, emotions, and circumstances without judgment or self-criticism.

Harboring self-criticism creates a cycle of stress and negativity that can be challenging: studies have shown that self-judgment activates the brain’s threat system, triggering the release of stress hormones like cortisol. Chronic exposure to these stress hormones can have detrimental effects on both mental and physical health, contributing to anxiety, depression, and even compromised immune function. The ability to meet yourself where you’re at, without judgment, is critical for holistic success and healing.

Meeting yourself where you’re at has four key components:

1.

Acceptance: You recognize and accept your thoughts and emotions without trying to suppress or deny them. It’s an acknowledgment that your feelings are valid, regardless of whether they align with your ideal state.

2. Non-Judgment: You refrain from evaluating yourself negatively based on your current situation. Instead

of criticizing or blaming yourself, you approach your experiences with understanding and kindness.

3.

Mindfulness: Meeting yourself where you’re at involves being present in the moment and observing your thoughts and feelings without attachment. It’s about cultivating awareness and being in tune with your inner experiences.

4.

Emotional Kindness: You treat yourself with the same kindness and understanding that you would offer to a friend facing similar challenges. This involves responding to your own struggles and setbacks with empathy rather than harsh self-criticism.

These four components are a part of your ever-evolving practice, not a list of things that must be done perfectly, 100% of the time. Success, in this context, is defined by you continuing to show up for yourself with kindness.

Practicing deep selfcompassion isn’t just a kind gesture to yourself; it’s a scientificallybacked strategy for creating a foundation of mental and emotional resilience as you redefine your version of success.
36 | RETAILING INSIGHT March-April 2024

There’s data to back up the importance of compassionately meeting yourself where you’re at, too. Studies utilizing neuroimaging techniques have demonstrated that self-compassion engages brain regions associated with emotional regulation and positive affect. This suggests that treating ourselves with kindness not only influences our emotional state but also has a tangible impact on the neural pathways in our brain.

When you’re able to meet yourself without judgment, you offer a crucial gift to your well-being—selfcompassion, which is more than just an abstract concept: studies utilizing neuroimaging techniques have demonstrated that self-compassion

engages brain regions associated with emotional regulation and positive affect. These findings suggest that treating yourself with kindness not only influences your emotional state, it also has a tangible impact on the neural pathways in your brain. Practicing deep self-compassion isn’t just a kind gesture to yourself; it’s a scientifically-backed strategy for creating a foundation of mental and emotional resilience as you redefine your version of success.

If you find it challenging to be compassionate towards yourself, try some of the following journaling exercises on for size. They’ll help you to ground yourself back into your worth, and will remind you that self-compassion is a gift you deserve. As you engage in these prompts, consider them as tools to reconnect with your inherent value and recognize the importance of treating yourself with kindness. Write a letter to yourself from the perspective of a supportive and compassionate friend.

What would they say to uplift and encourage you?

Envision a friend who sees your worth and appreciates your unique qualities. Allow their supportive voice to guide you back to a place of self-acknowledgment and encouragement. This exercise serves as a reminder

that you are deserving of compassion and understanding.

List three qualities or strengths that you admire in yourself, especially during challenging situations. How can you leverage these strengths to foster self-compassion?

Take a moment to reflect on your inherent qualities and strengths. Recognize that these attributes contribute to your worth. Consider how you can intentionally draw upon these strengths to navigate challenges with a sense of self-compassion and resilience.

Describe a self-compassionate response to a recent mistake or failure. How would you ideally treat yourself in these situations?

Recollect a recent mistake or failure and explore a compassionate response. Envision how you would comfort and guide a friend facing a similar situation. Apply that same gentle understanding to yourself, emphasizing that mistakes are opportunities for growth, not reflections of your worth.

Success is a Practice

The journey to success is dynamic and ongoing. It’s about recognizing that success is not just about you we achieve externally; it’s about how you navigate your internal landscape. As you redefine success on your terms, you’ll cultivate a life that is not just successful, but authentically fulfilling.

#1

Use Positive Language

No one said running any business, including retail, would be easy. Some days are more fun than others, sure. Using positive language lets you see opportunities where some might see disasters. For example, rather than say “we cannot afford to bring this fantastic new collection,” say “let’s see if we can reach out to some customers, we think would be interested in this artist’s work to help us bring more of their collection in the shop.”

#2

Offer Gratitude Daily

Rather than start the day feeling exhausted before it’s begun or you know you’re going to have to deal with an issue you’d rather avoid, start the day with gratitude and appreciate what’s going right. Think about the barista who made a delightful cup of coffee on your way to work or you customer last week came to thank you for helping her choose just the right gift for her dear friend. Feeling grateful and recognizing all that is going well helps us develop a positive mindset that acts as a shield and empowers us to weather setbacks.

#3

Build & Nurture Relationships

We know customer relationships are important as are with others who help and support us. Members of the media, landlords, sales representatives, fellow retailers, trade show organizers, and others can be a big boost. When we express a positive mindset, it becomes contagious, and people want to be around us. Think about it – would you want to be around people who feel like everything is doom and gloom or those who find the good in all? We don’t need to be happy all day, every day, but a positive mindset creates an atmosphere that invites trust which translates to loyal friends and colleagues.

Make Self-care a Daily Practice

Stress management and well-being isn’t confined to one aspect of our lives. Operating any business can be taxing, both mentally and physically, for you and those around you. Find ways to make self-care a daily habit, whether it’s meditating in the morning, practicing yoga in the evening, or getting a massage on your day off. While some might consider these luxuries of time, others consider them non-negotiable. Self-care allows us time to recharge and calm the body and mind so we can show up as our best selves – for ourselves and those who rely on us.

#5

Consider Challenges as Learning Opportunities

Something I hear often by business owners is they cannot seem to get

ahead of challenges or issues that arise daily. Rather than look at challenges with dread, why not embrace them as learning opportunities? This simple shift in mindset can make the experience not only less stressful to manage, but it could open doors to new ideas or ways to adapt to a constantly evolving marketplace and industry.

As a business owner or manager, your attitude is not just a reflection of your business. It helps shape your business and the relationships you form. Every interaction with people matters – from the delivery drivers to your direct customers. A positive mindset can help set you up for success. A positive mindset financially costs nothing and yet its rewards are priceless, both personally and professionally.

taKeFive 5 MEDITATION TECHNIQUES TO OVERCOME A CONDITIONED MIND

The only constant is change. In today’s chaotic world, the endless barrage of information, misinformation, and disinformation is at an all-time high. Our subconscious mind – which is responsible for 95% of our reality creation – is programmed and conditioned 24/7.

Our business and personal freedoms are under constant attack and for many of us, our lives have never been more stressful, hectic, and demanding. Our mental health has never suffered to this extent and along with it, our emotional and physical wellbeing has as well. Because of the nonstop societal conditioning and brainwashing, our mind and therefore our

lives have been hijacked. Inner peace and personal sovereignty have been designed and remain out of reach. Our natural state of clarity has been replaced with confusion. Chaos has been normalized. We are being held hostage by our programmed subconscious egoic mind.

Is there a way out? Can this conditioning and brainwashing be overcome? Is it possible to regain my personal sovereignty reclaim my own mind? Here are 5 powerful and ways to break free of the conditioned mind, bring instant clarity, confidence, and grounding into every moment of your life:

1. Pretend it’s a Boring Movie

When we cease to identify and get caught up mentally and emotionally in what we perceive and experience, we get our energetic power back. We become rooted and grounded in our own presence and higher mind. When chaos inevitably hits, by observing it like a boring movie, you will tangibly be calm, centered, and courageous. Your energy – and the Real You - is only fully unleashed when not identifying and getting caught up in the movie of life. Now, you are empowered and free to be the best version of yourself. All your love,

wisdom, passion, power, clarity, and courage are now fully online and at your disposal when pretend what you are watching is just a boring movie.

2. Question the Questioner

The voice in our head (which is just a biological fight or flight response – not the Real You) has the greatest effect upon our life and health. Doubting yourself creates a massive energetic contraction. It sends a wave of electricity throughout your entire bio-field and physical body that reverses the healing process. Next time you worry or doubt, simply ask yourself, ‘who is that doubts?’ The answer you will get will be ‘me. I’m the one who doubts. Then ask yourself, who am I? ’ You will get no answer because the voice inside your head is not you – it’s just fear. This practice brings back clarity and will serve as a catalyst to move forward with courage.

3. Don’t React, Respond

The chaos can often get the best of us – and greatly diminish our quality of life – because we react from a highly disempowered state. The part of us that reacts is our subconscious patterned egoic mind. It often feels like our reactions are beyond our conscious control. It’s true that our predictive programming will keep running and ruining our lives if we don’t take control back and empower ourselves.

Pretend you just arrived here, no past no future. By listening and observing with pure awareness – not the judging and analyzing of the conditioned mind – we break free of the reactionary state. We become focused and ferocious in our own truth. We now can authentically

operate with a spaciousness of pure awareness and tangible bravery that the reactionary programmed mind can never. Now, nothing and no one can ever pull you into chaos.

4. It’s All One Thing

Our patterned subconscious egoic mind cannot experience the tangible, felt sense of truth. It operates through fragmentation and limitation. This is how our lower mind works and why we seek the clarity and calmness that only meditation can offer. There is something even more powerful and liberating that you can do in one second that will ground and empower in a way that defies all mental understanding.

The seer, what is seen, and the act of seeing is all one thing. When you employ that enlightened technique, your fragmented mind and separate egoic self both disappear. Your frequency rises and mind becomes razor clear. It’s simple, tangible, immediate, and effective. That’s how you know you are working with the truth. That’s because the truth doesn’t require your participation. Lies do.

5. Take Back Control

Just like a submarine, we work best and run optimally – perfectly –when we take nothing in from our

environment. Other people’s perspectives literally have nothing to do with you. Taking on board someone’s opinion puts you in a disempowered and reactionary state. You no longer are in control of your own mind and therefore your life is not your own. The only opinion that truly matters is your own, always.

By employing the mantra ‘I am control’ you tangibly empower yourself beyond measure. It will bring into instant mediation and break the spell of your patterned subconscious mind. When you say these magic words, feel it deeply. Once it’s a tangible felt-sense reality, you will realize the truth… you always have been, are now, and forever will be the co-creator of your moment-tomoment existence.
