After last year’s success we are pleased to celebrate this year’s awards back at The Bloomsbury Big Top, with TV personality Rylan Clark as the evening’s host. FOREWORD KARL MCKEEVER Change is a word that often terrifies many people. Earlier this year, the UK decided to take a course of action that will result in fundamental change to large swathes of this country’s business community. But, in the world of retail, change has always been a constant. In retail, there is no place for being ‘content’ with the status quo. It leads to complacency, lost sales and also dampens creativity. Instead, change must be embraced as a source of inspiration and new opportunity. The uncertainty of Brexit has filtered into almost every area of UK business. Indeed, many sectors may fear being relegated from being major international players in the months ahead, as a result of the UK being the first to vote ‘Leave’. There is little doubt in my mind that Europe, and indeed the world, will continue to look to the UK for retail direction, and to set the tone and pace for change. It is a sector that has long been a pioneering force, delivering many firsts — something that we should rightly be proud of celebrating. That said, everyone must have a plan in place to ensure they are prepared for when change does come. Investment to engage with

shoppers in a clear, concise and original way will be an upmost priority. Now is the time for the most talented to re-charge their creative batteries and deliver for clients. Those who share my passion for this industry know the importance of creativity in store, how it can shape every aspect of the customer experience, from brand perception and loyalty, to influencing purchase decisions. Well-planned, thought through, original design will deliver benefit beyond the aesthetic, directly to a retailer’s bottom line. Congratulations to all the winners in this year’s VM Awards. Savour your success — you’ve earned it. At the same time, continue to aim high and deliver ever better work. Embrace the change we have ahead of us, and have the optimism to seek out new opportunities. It’s what will continue to set the best in UK visual merchandising apart, for years to come.

Joseph Fashion in collaboration with Harlequin Design

This display at Joseph Fashion on Fulham Road incorporated 122,640 cable ties. The concept was inspired by the Christopher Kane SS16 catwalk show, which featured the ‘plastic restraint’ tags worn as chokers and bracelets. The theme was followed through the window with mirrored walls adding space and dimension to the display. Coloured vinyls and blue PVC door curtains closed off the windows from the store. It was produced in
