As the saying goes, “life is better at the beach.” Here, vacation mode is a state of mind … all the time. It’s easy to stay, play and simply be you on the Northwest Florida Coast. So, why would you want to spend your precious time anywhere else?
Speaking of time, be sure to save some of yours for the many delightful distractions along the Gulf Coast. No matter your age or interest, rain or shine, family fun rules supreme for the crown jewel of Florida.

It isn’t so much what this part of the coast has that gives it such a special sense of place. Certainly, other beach destinations have daily access to abundant fresh Gulf seafood, a large deep-sea fishing charter fleet, adventure watersports, more than 1,000 holes of championship golf, hundreds of specialty boutique and designer discount shopping and dozens of family-friendly attractions. Well, maybe not all of them or maybe not many of them. Still, locals and loyal visitors alike will tell you, it isn’t the seemingly endless amenities and animated attractions that make this Gulf Coast a destination unlike any other. It is the way you feel here … at ease.

The Clark brothers out of Dallas, Texas, had the vision for TOPS’L Beach & Racquet Resort back in the 1980s, and not a moment too soon. The land changed ownership many times over the years, and the previous owner had plans to develop an automobile racetrack. Luckily, these enterprising young developers had a vision to create a “residential commercial resort community” on the 52 acres of land we now refer to as TOPS’L Beach & Racquet Resort. On September 20, 1983, they formed the TOPS’L Master Association with documents that still govern how TOPS’L operates today.
TOPS’L through the
Years By Tanya Rauch
In 1986, the Clarks developed much of the infrastructure, including the sales and check-in office, TOPS’L Club, tennis courts, Tennis Village and Beach Manor, that you see today. Immediately following the completion of these projects, the Clark brothers were affected by sweeping changes to income tax laws, which forced them to release control of the property. In 1994, ResortQuest (known at the time as Abbott Realty) joined forces with a prominent businessman from Tennessee to purchase the property and continue to build out the plans for the resort. From 1996 to 1999, the Summit, Captiva, Sierra Dunes and The Tides were constructed.
During this time, at least one family unknowingly began what would become a more than 20-year tradition of visiting TOPS’L with their children and eventual grandchildren. “We used to stay in Fort Walton Beach, then Destin, Sandestin a few times, but then we found TOPS’L,” recalls Tommy Sortor, of Mandeville, La. “I remember when we first started going down there. We might’ve stayed at the Beach Manor a few times, but then we found the Summit. We saw the Tides building go up. We were initially concerned that there would be too many people. But it didn’t turn out that way. There’s plenty of property and plenty of beach. We never find it really crowded like we did when we stayed further west. And now they have that little restaurant down there by the pool. It’s really nice when you can go up there for lunch from the beach and not have to go back to the room.” Tommy, and his wife, Ann, say they liked that the property was a little more secluded and quiet. Ann says, “We love to walk that long walk. It’s just beautiful. It’s restive. It’s relaxing. It’s calming.” It’s also why they love to stay at the Summit. “We enjoy that great expansive view,” says Ann. Tommy adds, “We see deer down there occasionally, too. Either from the balcony or a bedroom window – usually at night.” The family-focused couple is already planning their next trip to TOPS’L and looking forward to seeing the renovations and improvements on the property – particularly at the Club.

TOPS’L Fitness Center Reveals Makeover Who’s ready for swimsuit season?
5 TIPS TO STAY IN SHAPE WHILE ON VACATION Fitness Tips from Kyle Higginbotham, Elite Trainer with International Sports Science Association 1. Try a local fitness class. Get out of your comfort zone! (Check the Club schedule to see classes offered right on-site at TOPS’L.) 2. Drink lots of water throughout the day. 3. Plan out your meals ahead of time (much easier to do in a vacation rental with a fully-equipped kitchen). 4. Get moving! Just 15 minutes of exercise is better than nothing 5. Don’t stress about it. Fitness is a life long journey; it’s okay to take a couple days off. Let your body rest. The one thing I tell everyone is to break a sweat every day. Go for a walk on the beach, paddle board, or ride your bike. Exercise doesn’t just have to be done in the gym.
This past spring, ResortQuest by Wyndham Vacation Rental’s TOPS’L Club fitness center located in Miramar Beach, Florida underwent one of the most extensive “makeovers” in the resort’s history. “We are dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for our homeowners, members and guests,” says TOPS’L General Manager Mike Speicher. “To us ‘TOPS’L Life’ means that our pristine beaches, pools, massage therapy, restaurants, and the newly renovated fitness facility and tennis courts are on par with amenities expected of a world-class resort.” The 2,500-square-foot fitness area received updated paint, flooring and lighting to begin the renovations. It now houses a comprehensive package of Life Fitness and Cybex cardio and weight equipment. The new equipment features the Life Fitness Integrity PowerMiIll Climber,
six Life Fitness Treadmills, four Cybex Arc Elliptical Trainers, two Integrity Upright Stationary Bicycles, and three Integrity Recumbent Stationary Bicycles. Every cardio machine is equipped with a personal audio system and video. In addition to new equipment, TOPS’L welcomes Pamela Herman as the new Club Manager. Herman has been in the Emerald Coast area for over 20 years, starting and directing two major fitness facilities in the area during that time. She has 30 years of experience in the fitness industry. In addition, the Club’s Life Fitness Signature Series strength training equipment has been carefully selected to satisfy all levels of fitness. “These machines provide limitless options for any workout and skill level and a perfect fit for all of our TOPS’L guests,” Herman says.
GET FIT WITH KYLE HIGGINBOTHAM Higginbotham is a two-time winner of “Best Personal Trainer in Destin” by VIP Magazine and has been a personal trainer at TOPS’L for more than four years. He loves the sense of family here. “Everyone is so supportive of one another,” Higgenbotham says. “Between the guests, members and staff everyone is cheering you on!” When he’s not in the gym, you can find Higginbotham with his wife, Kadi, playing volleyball, paddle boarding, indoor rock climbing, and even every once in awhile, enjoying a lazy day at the beach.
DIRECTOR OF TENNIS Since he joined the staff in 1995, Joe D’Aleo has helped establish TOPS’L Beach & Racquet Resort as one of the best tennis resorts in the country. His passion and devotion to the game combined with an accomplished background make D’Aleo a winning player, coach and instructor. Members and visitors enjoy his professional and cheerful demeanor on and off the courts. At the young age of three, D’Aleo was hitting balls against a fence while his parents played at park near their home in Miami, Florida and in just a few years, he was playing competitive USTA tennis tournaments all over south Florida. After moving to Georgia at the age of 12, D’Aleo continued playing junior tennis all over the southern states. At 18 years old, he was ranked No. 5 in the state of Georgia. He went on to play tennis for Georgia Tech, where he says he’ll never forget playing against the fifth ranked University of Georgia player in his sophomore year and winning his doubles match with a huge crowd watching. Even with great memories like that, D’Aleo says, “For me, there is no better place to play tennis in the country than at TOPS’L. It is my
favorite place to play—the courts are in great shape and the views are awesome with the villas and oak trees surrounding us. The comradery of the members and guests at the resort make it such a great atmosphere to watch and hang out near the courts year-round.” Comradery is important in the sport, as is a little friendly competition. D’Aleo met his wife, Jessica, on the courts at TOPS’L, and they play regularly with their two sons, Ethan, 12, and Jacob, 16. “When we play doubles as a family, it can get heated between the boys because neither of them likes to lose. Jessica and I have to each play with one boy so we can keep them from hitting each other with the ball,” he laughs. D’Aleo has been certified with the USPTA as an Elite Professional for 20 years and was nominated USPTA 2006-2007 District Pro of the Year, Florida division for the panhandle. He has been awarded the prestigious honor of USTA FL and USPTA FL service award in 2011. He is a former president and currently, serves as the first vice president of USPTA FL.
When you hit the tennis courts, you’ll likely find at least one of these two passionate pros with a racquet in hand.

Sam Vickroy has been part of the TOPS’L tennis staff since 2004. His father started him in the game of tennis in Nashville, Tennessee, where he met and trained under world-renowned professional Bill Tym throughout his junior tennis career. In 1990, Vickroy had the tennis experience of a lifetime when his dad took him to a celebrity tennis event where he came face to face with tennis legend Arthur Ashe. After hitting balls with him on the court, the outgoing Vickroy said, “I must have knocked everyone down making sure I got to sit right next to him during lunch. Talking to him and listening to his stories about his life and tennis career is something I will cherish for the rest of my life.” A top-ranked junior player at the state and college levels, Vickroy was undefeated his senior year in number three singles and number two doubles, with his college team, Virginia Intermont NAIA, finishing 14th in the nation that year.
that everyone looked to be having so much fun. When he realized he could make a living doing something he loved. He says, “I was sold!” After college, Vickroy went to work for Bill Tym where he had the opportunity to teach world-ranked junior players. He now loves to practice at TOPS’L with his wife, Stacie. “To say that I teach her would indicate that she actually listens to me,” he jokes before adding, “Wait. She’s going to read this—she’s awesome at tennis.” He has been a USPTA Elite Professional for 15 years and continues to grow his knowledge of the game each year. When he’s not on the courts, Vickroy says he enjoys doing “Whatever Stacie wants to do. I have to make up for earlier.”
While waiting to play one of his matches, it was then that this devoted player decided he wanted to make teaching tennis a

LEGEND: Evert Jonsson By Tanya Rauch
“If I can’t beat them now, I’ll outlive them,” jokes fun-loving, focused, fitness enthusiast, Evert Jonsson, Swedish National Champion tennis player. Evert is 75 years young now, but only began playing tennis when most players hit their peak, at age 32. Born and raised in Ovesholm, Sweden, Jonsson played soccer when he was young, and found tennis later in life. He’s now chasing what age group tennis players call “the gold ball,” a U.S. National Championship. Jonsson won a World Championship for Sweden in 2013 and says he has “seven or eight” National Championship titles for Sweden, but he’s still striving for the coveted U.S. title. A successful career in the computer industry brought Jonsson to the United States for travel and eventually full-time in 1990. Initially settling in Atlanta, he and his wife, Donna, decided that beach life was much more appealing than the big city, and they moved to Destin in 1997. In 2007, the
couple become owners and full-time Captiva residents in TOPS’L Beach & Racquet Resort. So, while Jonsson jests that he’ll just outlive all of his age group opponents until he can win that gold ball, he may only be partially joking. He takes his training and health seriously, working out at the Club regularly with personal trainer Kyle Higginbotham in the off-season, in order to maintain strength and cardio. Closer to tournament season, you’ll find him playing more matches and practicing with TOPS’L tennis pros Sam Vickroy and Joe D’Aleo. As soon as they open, Jonsson begins to “hold court. He likes to get out there before it gets too hot,
which he measures by “how many shirts I have to change into during one match.” Diet is an important part of this player’s training as well. He eats, “a salad a day.” In fact, Club Tiki just named a salad after Evert, which is a tasty mix of greens, grilled chicken breast, hard-boiled egg, bacon, walnuts, bleu cheese, cucumbers and tomatoes. When asked, “Why TOPS’L?” Evert flashes a smile and quips, “My kids in Sweden wouldn’t visit me if I wasn’t here on the beach.”
Helen Drake Invitational April 17-21, 2019
TOPS’L Beach & Racquet Resort is proud of its long-held tradition of serving as the host site of the Helen Drake Invitational. It is not only a great tennis tournament, but also an exciting weekend-long event serving up many wonderful amenities for players, family and friends to enjoy during their stay here. The Helen Drake is a United States Tennis Association (USTA) designated tournament sanctioned by USTA FL. It has been voted Adult Tournament of the Year in Florida three times by the AL Mills Memorial, and is consistently one of the largest USTA adult tennis tournaments in the country, with more than 250 players each year. All main draw matches are played on our 12 clay courts with 10 of them lighted for night play. With several divisions to choose from, including Men and Women Open Singles and Doubles as well as Mixed Doubles, and a first match consolation draw, players have plenty of opportunity to play the tennis they enjoy the most.
His face refocuses as it does when he prepares his serve and he adds, “At TOPS’L, there’s tennis for everyone. It’s a community and it doesn’t matter if you are here with your kids and just want to learn with them, or if you are chasing a gold ball. This place can facilitate all skill levels.” We look forward to having Evert pose with “the gold ball” for next year’s issue of TOPS’L Life, because we know if anyone can accomplish their goals, he can.
All registered players receive a gift bag and tournament t-shirt at their first match check-in. After the tournament, come join the fun at the players’ party on Friday night. Enjoy food, drinks and live entertainment. The party is free to attend for players and guests pay a nominal fee with all proceeds going to our local Caring and Sharing center, to provide food and assistance to local residents in need. Lodging during the event fills up quickly. Tournament players may enjoy discounts on lodging at TOPS’L by calling reservations at 855-299-6321 and mentioning “Helen Drake.”

Meet Richard Mendoza, the new executive chef for TOPS’L Beach & Racquet Resort. This award-winning chef came to TOPS’L during the summer of 2018, after serving as executive chef at the Westin at the Woodlands, just north of Houston. Named Houston’s “Chef of the Month” in 2017, Mendoza is not only well-known for his edible delicacies, but also for his leadership. After three years at Westin, Mendoza still was flanked by his opening team. “It’s just about taking care of people and serving
Chef Mendoza’s No. 1 Kitchen Tip: “I do most of the cooking when we are at home. When I’m done cooking in the kitchen, the only thing we have to wash is the dish we eat on. You have to clean as you go, or else you are just cooking over your mess. You’ve got to maximize your space. It makes cooking really easy.”
great food,” he says. “If you don’t do those two things, you can’t be successful. The dishwasher is the most important person in your kitchen and has to be treated with the utmost respect. Everybody does, really.” Mendoza, a passionate and focused 54 year-old, loves the connection that food has with relationships. He and his wife, Tammy, have a beautiful four-year old daughter, Gabriella. “My daughter,” he says, “loves to cook. I’ll ask her what she wants for dinner. She says, ‘I want macaroni and cheese, but I want to help,’ and she pulls up a chair.” While growing up in Tallahassee, Florida, the curious young gourmand appreciated the fellowship that forms around food. “When I was in fourth grade, I would go to a friend’s house after school and I would go in his mom’s pantry, find things, and start cooking. That was our afternoon snack,” Mendoza said. He started crafting full meals at the age of 17. “My mom was raising three kids and working two jobs and I just thought, ‘She doesn’t need to be doing this for us,’ and started making dinner for the family.”

Puree should be consistency of maple syrup. Eventually, his appetite for learning more led him to the kitchen of the prestigious Michelin-starred chef Günter Seeger and the Ritz-Carlton in Buckhead, Georgia. “I was like 20 years old and I walked in with my resume and asked for the chef’s office. I had no idea about HR,” he chuckles. “I handed him my resume and he crumbled it up and said, “You have the job. I’ll know in 30 minutes if you know how to cook or not.’” Sure enough, he did. But otherwise, I like them to experiment.” He looks forward to working with Sous Chef Allen Newsome and the culinary team to enhance the menu here at TOPS’L. “We just want to elevate the experience as a whole. We’ll start by upgrading serving dishes. Then put good food in that. I want people to say, ‘Where do you work?’ and when I tell them, the answer should be, ‘TOPS’L? Oh my gosh, that food is over the top!’ That’s what it has to be.”
Place puree in a mixing bowl and fold in remaining ingredients, including fine diced mango. Allow to chill for 2 hours. Spoon over fish, chicken or pork. Salsa can be used cold or slightly warm if preferred. Makes 4 servings.
Fresh from the GRILL SOUS CHEF ALLEN NEWSOME
Well-traveled, Sous Chef Allen Newsome brings several cultural influences to the TOPS’L Beach & Racquet Resort’s kitchens with him. “I’m excited to be here, working with a great group of people. Everyone tries their hardest to make the customer’s experience a great one and that’s what it’s all about,” Newsome shares. His mother was born in Jamaica and moved to England at a young age. Growing up in Sussex, Newsome says his mother was “an amazing cook,” herself. “Some of my best memories are from those days: jerk chicken, rice and peas, and the famous English Sunday roast,” Newsome recalls. With a father native to Texas, who fancies himself a BBQ pit-master, Newsome says he loves complex ingredients and different cooking methods, but also loves cooking with simple, quality ingredients that speak for themselves. His favorite thing to eat?“Mexican. Tacos, tamales, mole sauce, churros with coffee—that’s a good day for me,” Newsome responds with a smile on his face.
Chef Newsome’s Kitchen Tip to You: “I notice a lot of people skipping the rest process when cooking meat, especially steak. When grilling or searing steak, instead of taking it off of the heat and cutting into it immediately, place it on a cutting board or serving tray for at least 10 minutes letting the juices reabsorb into the meat. Roasts can take even longer— up to an hour.”

The Perfect Place
DREAM WEDDING for a
By Tanya Rauch
You’ve found the perfect mate, so why settle for less than the perfect place when you marry? The Gulf Coast is one of the most popular coastal destinations for weddings and TOPS’L Beach & Racquet Resort caters to the bride and groom looking for a wedding of the dreamlike variety. Whether you picture your big day overlooking the Gulf of Mexico, surrounded by tiki torches and illuminated by bistro lights, or underneath the chandelier of a ballroom, TOPS’L has exactly what you need for your special day. Accommodating weddings of up to 200 people, our event space, ample lodging, catering menu, and picture perfect backdrop certainly set us apart as a premier wedding venue. What we really take pride in, however, is making every wedding personal and special for our brides and grooms. Here, get to know one of the couples who said, “I do” on our beautiful beaches, Joel and Brittani Bell.
About the Bride: My name is Brittani Bell and I am from Austin, Texas. I am a patient treatment coordinator for an oral surgeon. I come from a family of gymnasts and was a cheerleader and dancer for a big portion of my life, with my dad as my coach for many of those years.
About the Groom: My name is Joel Bell, and I was raised all over the east coast as an Army “brat.” I’m a quality assurance engineer now, but previously served in the Army. I have been deployed three times to Iraq, for a total of 33 months. During my deployments, I got to experience the surge in 2007, troops withdrawing from major cities in 2009, and the troops pull-out by the end of 2011.
How They Met: Brittani says, “We met playing Jenga during “Sunday Funday” at a local hangout in Austin. Joel and his friends were watching game four of the finals and he noticed me from across the room. He pointed in my direction before making his approach and told his friends, ‘I have to go talk to that girl, she’s the girl I’m going to marry!’ We hit it off instantly and the rest is really history.”
The Proposal: “I had what I thought was a family photo shoot planned with my mother and sister in the spring. We flew to Destin for a mini-vacation and photo shoot on the beach at sunset. Towards the end, the photographer suggested I take some photos alone and had my mother and sister step aside. I did wonder why she was wanting images of just me, but had no idea what was really going on. She had me turn left to face the sun a little more, and as I was turning I found my “hunk-of-aman” (his words) down on one knee. So many thoughts passed through my mind, because as far as I knew, he was back home in Texas. The proposal was truly the greatest surprise ever — just magical,” Brittani remembers.
Choosing TOPS’L: We were looking at several venues and nothing seemed possible on the extremely busy weekend we chose to be married in Destin. When we connected with Florencia at TOPS’L everything immediately started coming together. From the wedding expert, to the catering team, everyone at TOPS’L made the entire process stress-free and smooth. About the Big Day: On our wedding day, the entire TOPS’L team came together to make everything perfect. There was one moment just before rehearsal, that we had ordered pizza with friends out by the pool. The pizza was not yet ready, but we had to get started. Florencia, seeing the hunger on our faces, stepped out of the rehearsal and personally brought us our pizza and drinks—such great
quality of care from the beginning to the end. With some personal hiccups during the day, the staff at TOPS’L did all they could to go out of their way for our big day and we’ll never forget them. What’s next? Joel is looking forward to moving up in his new career and Brittani says she is enjoying her flexible schedule and new role as a wife. “We plan to (fingers crossed) buy a house in the next year; and soon after, start bringing in the babies. We are extremely excited for this next chapter.” For information on planning your dream wedding at TOPS’L, contact our weddings team at 1-800-728-1021 or TOPSLWeddings@wynvr.com.
