THE CHANGEMAKERS

As the seasons transition towards warmer weather and longer days, heralding the arrival of spring, this issue of Resident Magazine shines a spotlight on trailblazers and changemakers.

Our cover story features Lawrence Jones, the youngest Fox News reporter to have his own nationally broadcast TV show, Lawrence Jones Cross Country, before the age of 30. Jones travels coast to coast each week, addressing pressing issues facing the country, including politics, sports, entertainment, and crime. While his home is in Texas, he spends weekends in NYC to deliver his wildly popular news show. Resident Magazine interviews Jones about his success, upcoming projects, and his observations on the biggest problems facing the country and the changes he believes are needed.

As New York Fashion Week comes to a close, we feature highlights from the runway and top trends for next fall, captured by photographer Charles Barnes.

We also shine a spotlight on Abingdon Mullin, a trailblazer in her own right, who is not only a pilot, scuba diver, and race car driver, but also the founder of Abingdon Co watches. Mullin noticed a gap in the market for aviation watches designed specifically for female pilots, and her namesake company has become highly sought after and successful in filling that void. As an adventurer and entrepreneur, Mullin has also established the Abingdon Foundation, which provides support and awards scholarships to women and girls, empowering them to break glass barriers and pursue their interests and careers in STEAM fields.

With festival season kicking off, we have a guide to the Big Easy, showcasing the best places to eat, sleep, and party. We also look forward to the exciting Formula 1 Race coming to Miami, which promises to attract celebrities, moguls, and glitterati. Our magazine features a guide to the best spots in Miami to catch the race, as well as where to dine and lounge. Looking ahead to summer, we present some of the world's most luxurious travel destinations to whet your appetite and inspire your jetsetting adventures.

LAWRENCE JONES Crossing

the Country to Bring Humanity to the News

Lawrence Jones is the youngest Black solo host of a program in cable news currently is the host of Lawrence Jones Cross Country, which airs every Saturday night on Fox News Channel. Jones has become renowned for his signature storytelling and "man-on-the-street" segments focusing on the impact of various issues on local communities. He has covered several stories, including the Uvalde, Texas mass shooting, the state of race relations in America, and gun violence in Chicago. Jones, who studied Criminal Justice at the University of North Texas, started his career as an anchor with no intention of being on TV. It happened when he was in college, playing around with his phone and doing investigative reporting. Now, his show has a sweet spot in covering crime issues that typically do not get a lot of coverage. He uses his background in Criminal Justice and experience working in juvenile court to cover crime and understand law enforcement lingo. Resident Magazine speaks to Lawrence Jones bout his career transition from criminal justice and law enforcement to becoming a news anchor, his favorite crime TV shows, and how his perspective differs from other new shows, bringing a sense of humanity and patience to the news coverage.

What do you enjoy most about coming to New York every week?

I love the energy of New York, which is different from Texas, where I live. It's faster-paced, but I also appreciate the slower pace of life in Texas, where it's just me, my dog, and my family. I get the best of both worlds, even though I'm only in New York for a couple of days each week.

Can you tell me about your career, from criminal justice and law enforcement to becoming an anchor with your own show?

I never dreamed of being on TV; my goal was

to become a lawyer. However, while in college, I started investigating stories and creating reports on my phone, and I found that I really enjoyed it. I fell into TV news and never looked back. I love going after stories, and my Criminal Justice background has been particularly useful in covering crime and other issues. The show that I currently host covers all issues facing the country, but we have a particular focus on crime, and my background in law enforcement and working in juvenile court has been helpful in that area.

Do you have any favorite crime TV shows, documentaries, or docuseries that inspired you when you were younger?

34 | resident.com COVER | RESIDENT

I love the initial episodes of "48", but the person who inspired me the most was Nancy Grace. I now work with her, and we have a great relationship. Nancy taught me to be descriptive in my storytelling and to bring the audience into the courtroom. People sometimes criticize her for being too graphic, but she wanted to make sure that her audience understood what was happening.

How does your perspective differ from other news shows, based on your background?

I'm not a traditional prompter reader; I prefer to be out in the field, gathering all the facts for the story and I have the luxury of taking my time to put together my segments as I’m not rushed to get the segment ready for the 9 o’clock news. I've covered many crime stories, and I understand the delicate task of reporting on stories where families are still grieving. Sometimes, I spend time with them to gather all the elements of the story and be patient with them as they walk through the process of mourning. I believe that my approach allows me to deliver the news with a sense of humanity.

Does your perspective change when you're in the field conducting the stories?

All the time. I cover not just crime, but also other issues that the country is facing, such as homelessness, violence, and murders. I can talk with people who have been directly affected by these issues, such as mothers who have lost children to drug overdoses or violence on the street. I've learned that you can't write the script before you go out into the field because sometimes, the story changes depending on what you discover on the scene.

What story has made a lasting impression on you?

One of the most fascinating cases that I covered was the Idaho murders. I did three shows in Idaho, and the case was evolving as I was reporting on it. The killer was still on the scene, and it was a particularly complicated case. The perpetrator was a criminal justice major, just like me, which made it even more impactful.

resident.com | 35

What do you think is the biggest crisis facing the country?

In my opinion, the biggest crisis facing the country is the fentanyl epidemic. The devastating consequences of this drug are not widely recognized, as people are experimenting with it without realizing its potency. The drugs are often laced and a lethal dose could be the size of a pencil eraser. The fentanyl crisis is not only killing our kids, but also adults and even children, and it is being brought into the country by the same people who engage in human trafficking. It is an enterprise system operated by the cartel. There is a direct correlation between the crisis and what's happening at the border, and I believe that if more journalists highlight this issue, people will understand the severity of the problem.

There is also a direct correlation to what happened after COVID. These kids were so isolated, and they'll never be the same and their social skills have changed. They don't want to go to work anymore, and they did drugs during these lock downs. A lot of people don't want to have those conversations, because it forces us to be self-reflective to think, what did we do to our kids?

What advice would you give to the next generation?

My advice to the next generation is to always say yes and be ready to go anytime. By saying yes to new opportunities, you can learn from others and gain valuable experience. Don't think you know everything, be humble and learn from others who have made mistakes before you. No one owes you anything, and if you don't say yes, someone else will. Be openminded, work hard, and take advantage of opportunities that come your way.

I’ve had great mentors such as Sean Hannity, Dana Perino, Lauren Petterson, who was a producer and now the president of Fox Business. Our CEO Suzanne Scott really pushed me to go out there on the road, learning America and the different facets.

36 | resident.com
COVER | RESIDENT

What are your next goals?

I am currently working on a new book now and I’m taking my mother’s advice “to enjoy life” as I tend to be a workaholic. I hope to eventually get married and become a daily show anchor, while still enjoying traveling and being on the road. Another passion of mine is working with special operators, Navy SEALs, Green Berets, Army Rangers, Delta Force operators, to help them transition into civilian life using canines. How would you describe your fashion style?

My fashion style is diverse, depending on the occasion. I am a huge sneakerhead and have over 200 pairs of sneakers, especially Air Jordans, for street wear. For professional wear, I prefer British European tailored suits with pocket squares, ties, and oxford shoes. I also love double-breasted English bespoke suits. In Texas, I wear cowboy boots and Levi's with flannels, clean T-shirts with a bomber jacket, or anything Ralph Lauren Purple Label. I shop at Bergdorf Goodman and my favorite designers are Tom Ford and Ralph Lauren Purple Label.

EMPOWERING ADVENTURE

The Inspiring Story of Abingdon Mullin and The Abingdon Co.

Born in England and raised in Burbank, California, Abingdon Mullin is a trailblazer in the fields of aviation, entrepreneurship, and women's empowerment. As the CEO of "The Abingdon Co.", a watch company specifically designed for adventurous women, and the founder of Abingdon Foundation, an organization aimed at promoting non-traditional industries to girls and women, Abingdon's work revolves around empowering women and creating opportunities for females in various industries.

Abingdon's journey began when she obtained her pilot's certificate in 2006 at the age of 22. Upon realizing that there were no aviation watches designed for women in the market, she decided to fill this gap by creating her own line of purpose-built watches for women. This led to the birth of "The Abingdon Co." in 2008, and her watches quickly gained popularity among female pilots and members of the military who were not allowed to wear digital watches with smart technology due to security reasons.

What sets Abingdon's watches apart from regular timepieces is their functionality specifically tailored for pilots. All of the logbooks in aviation are in Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), also known as Universal Time Code (UTC) or Zulu time, and pilots need a rotating bezel that

can act as a flight calculator for time, speed, and distance calculations. Abingdon's watches are designed to meet these specific needs of pilots, making them a practical and stylish choice for women in the aviation industry.

In addition to her success as a watch entrepreneur, Abingdon gained further recognition when she appeared on the popular television show Shark Tank in 2014. Although she did not secure an investment from the sharks, the experience was exhilarating and challenging for her as she had never asked for capital infusion from investors before. Despite the setback, Abingdon remained determined to expand her business and bring more women's watches to different industries such as the military and dive world.

Apart from her business ventures, Abingdon is also passionate about empowering women and girls in non-traditional industries through her foundation, Abingdon Foundation, which was established on the 10th anniversary of "The Abingdon Co." in 2017. The foundation's mission is to promote diverse opportunities for girls and women, beyond the traditional fields of science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEM). Abingdon believes that exposing girls to different options and breaking gender stereotypes can broaden their horizons and open up endless possibilities for them.

38 | resident.com
PROFILE
| RESIDENT

Abingdon's vision goes beyond just advocating for gender equality in various industries. She aims to change the mindset of society and eradicate the notion that certain careers, hobbies, or activities are strictly for boys or girls. She wants to create a world where individuals are free to pursue their passions and interests without limitations or restrictions based on their gender.

Abingdon's pioneering efforts in voicing the female presence in aviation and her relentless pursuit of empowering women through her businesses and foundation have earned her widespread recognition and respect. Her determination, resilience, and unwavering commitment to breaking gender barriers and creating opportunities for women have made her a true role model and inspiration for women and girls around the world.

As Abingdon continues to soar to new heights in her entrepreneurial and philanthropic endeavors, her legacy as a CEO, pilot, and advocate for women's empowerment is bound to leave a lasting impact on generations to come. Her passion for empowering women and promoting diversity in industries traditionally dominated by men serves as a beacon of inspiration, encouraging women and girls to dream big, overcome challenges, and pursue their passions with confidence and resilience. Abingdon Mullin is a true trailblazer, making a meaningful difference in the world through her work, leadership, and advocacy for women's empowerment.

Mentalist Superstar GERARD SENEHI Knows The Business in Your Mind

Mentalist superstar, motivational speaker, corporate entertainer and entrepreneur Gerard Senehi is an amazing person to be around any way you slice it. Recognized internationally as “The Experimentalist,” he is also difficult to define and defies all categories, evoking mystery and inspiring audiences to be curious about what they can see and what they don’t know. In addition, he is Founder of The Open Future Institute: The QUESTion Project - a non-profit organization founded to expand the role of education.

Gerard creates a captivating environment where audience members can reimagine their ideas of what’s achievable, all the while challenging them to explore possibilities beyond the imagined boundaries. Senehi first became inspired by unseen possibilities at the age of 10 when his friends were drawing cards from a deck and he was able to correctly predict three in a row.

Born in Paris and raised in Switzerland, he became even more enamored with the mysteries of the unknown not long after when his mother had a dream one night about a friend of hers accidentally catching herself on fire that then actually occurred. Already fluent in two languages and proficient in two more by the time he came to the United States at the age of 12, Senehi spent hours in his bedroom exploring magic, mentalism and “becoming fascinated with the things I couldn’t understand.”

40 | resident.com PROFILE | RESIDENT

As a student at Amherst College in Massachusetts, he continued entertaining his fellow classmates with impossible feats, however he did not consider performing professionally until the early 2000s following a career as a science, art teacher and social worker. While doing nonprofit work friends persuaded him to give show business a try. He began by calling a local New York talent agency who immediately took him on as a client after seeing his act.

Since then, he has been featured on numerous television programs nationally and internationally, including The Today Show and Ellen. New York magazine once referred to Senehi’s performances as “some sort of religious experience from the sixteenth century” and he has performed privately for everyone from former President Bill Clinton and legendary TV producer Norman Lear.

Many clients in the corporate world also quickly took notice and he is often invited as the keynote presenter for conferences. They often comment on the near impossible challenge of surpassing one of Senehi’s per-

formances for future events. Deutsche Bank once said: “You were the most talked about presenter of our entire conference – and we had some of the most renowned thinkers in the world.”

In addition, Gerard is also the Founder of Open Future Institute and the QUESTion Project, a non-profit organization he founded with his wife in 2014 dedicated to expanding the role of education to teach a new curriculum that helps high school students define who they are and approach their life and future with inspiration and purpose. The QUESTion Class is being taught in public high schools in New York City and has reached over 12,000 students. Gerard is a graduate of Amherst College and received a Master of Education from the University of Massachusetts. He lives in New York City with his wife, Francesca, and regularly convenes a cross-section of the city’s brightest minds in “Evolutionary Salons” to explore questions of human purpose and potential.

UNBELIEVABLE

Art Exhibition By Mikail Akar Comes to New York City

Young artist Mikail Akar is making waves in the art world at the tender age of just 10 years old. The tween creator already is a bona fide painter with works found worldwide and showcasing in numerous exhibitions around the globe. His colorful work appeals to lovers of contemporary art as the prodigy draws his inspiration from historical figures including Jackson Pollock, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Gerhard Richter.

Mikail’s art exhibition “UNBELIEVABLE” will be on display at the Modus10 – Rolf Benz Flagship Store in SoHo from March 31st – May 31st, 2023.

Mikail's paintings are collected internationally among art collectors and celebrities alike. Already making a significant mark on the international press circuit he has appeared on Fox News, BBC News, New York Post, ProSieben and RTL.

Born in 2012 in Cologne, his career began relatively carefree. For his fourth birthday his parents gave him a small canvas and finger paints simply because they didn't want to buy Legos or toy cars again. Mikail began his prolific artistic journey at this exact moment, and paints today at his Studio in Cologne, Germany.

42 | resident.com EVENTS | RESIDENT

His talents were seen in a first painting and his parents fully encouraged him to continue his work. Watching YouTube videos together with Mikail he learned certain painting techniques and soon the little artist began to paint nonstop. His introduction into the art world launched shortly after with adult artists wanting to preview his work more and more.

Mikail has already created several exhibitions in many cities in Germany: Cologne, Dusseldorf, Berlin, Hamburg and Munich, where international art collectors soon became aware of the young artist. This led to other shows in Vienna, Zurich, Istanbul, and New York City.

Since last year’s solo exhibition at The Highline Gallery in New York City in April 2022, Mikail’s art has been presented at further art exhibitions including;

The Munich Art Fair, ArtMuc, Germany (May 2022)

ArtArchCologne Exhibit, Germany (December 2022)

Ernst Fuchs Museum, Vienna, Austria (December 2022)

Grand Hotel Schloss Bensberg Exhibit, Germany (February 2023 – May 2023)

Forthcoming Exhibitions in New York City include:

Solo Exhibition at Modus10 - Rolf Benz Flagship Store, SoHo (March, 31 – May, 31 2023)

ArtExpo New York Fine Art Fair – Booth S404, Pier 36 (March 30, – April 2, 2023)

As a visual artist, Mikail does not want to limit himself to canvases. He recently painted a wreckage part of the Airbus 310, which was exhibited in Cologne/Bonn Airport, at his own studio in Cologne where he regularly paints, and will be shown in other international airports in the future.

Other projects which Mikail is currently working on include painting a series of three classic cars which will be going on a roadshow in the near future in addition to a 165 ft. (50 meter) long canvas painting on a secret project – watch this space for details.

The young artist also has a philanthropic side and has gained notable attention with his work being auctioned for good causes such as the “Art Helps to Give” campaign. One of his most recent collaborations has been with the mineral water brand, Gerolsteiner with the Mikail Akar Artist Edition, where Mikail’s art was printed on over 17 million water bottles. Additionally, the painter has also launched charity events in Turkey to help local people during the earthquake in 2020 with the Civil Protection authority AFAD. He has also painted numerous times together with German celebrities such as the Höhner, Laith Al-Deen, Manuel Neuer or Peter Maffay and has appeared on German TV show “Klein Gegen Gross” moderated by Kai Pflaume.

Despite his adventures as a creative artist, Mikail has remained a normal child, going to school in Cologne and is fully supported by his parents and two siblings.

The treasures found at Il Tinello East blend years of tradition with innovative Italian cooking and provide a rich experience through presentation that is purely matched by a delicious menu. The quality Italian ingredients, spectacular wine list, hand-crafted cocktails and impeccable service showcase the restaurant's heritage and pride in serving customers a memorable meal.

“We passionately care about tradition. We know that people care about food quality as much as they do about ambience and service,” states owner Benny Bello. “It humbles us to be able to operate a beloved restaurant that values and honors the quality of a good old-fashioned New York meal. There is simply nothing like it.”

The menu boasts a lunch and dinner service that is notably divine in presentation and taste factors that all together create a magical experience. The fresh homemade pastas, regional ingredients and diverse wine list are all desirable. Portions are as large as skyscrapers and tastes are as rich as the Wall Street stock markets.

Such highlights at this quintessential restaurant include antipastos of Grilled Portobello with mixed green salad, goat cheese, balsamic dressing; Capesante with pan-seared jumbo sea scallops, brandy, saffron, herb sauce; and Crispy Calamari with tomato sauce. Enjoy the house favorite Caesar Salad for two prepared table side and served classic style: or the Siciliana with mesclun, tomatoes, onions, feta cheese, and cucumbers.

“Everything you taste here represents the magic of New York City. This is the food of our neighborhood, and we know our customers love and appreciate it as much as we do every single day,” Bello emphasizes

The selection of freshly made in-house Pastas are woven into dishes such as Tagliolini with sea scallops, shrimp, cultured mussels, little neck clams, garlic, fresh herb; Penne with portobello mushrooms, fresh chopped tomato, garlic, olive oil; and Rigatoni with roasted eggplant, fresh tomato, basil, diced buffalo mozzarella. The Entrees are just as superb with Tagliata with black angus steak, arugola, garlic, rosemary, roasted potato; Scarcapariello with lemon, white wine, garlic; Veal Parmigiano with parmigiano, tomato sauce; and the Campagnola for two with beef, chicken, sausages, peppers, potatoes, white wine, rosemary, and garlic.

Leave room for the famed desserts that include sweets such as Tiramisu, Panna Cotta, Italian Ricotta Cheesecake and Banana Flambe table size. Cocktails also are a part of this joyous

experience with the 2nd Avenue Spritz with Litchi Liqueur, Prosecco, and St-Germaine Elderflower Liqueur; the New Fashion with Cincoro Reposado Tequila, Ramazzotti Amaro, fresh orange; and Side of 46th Street with Hennessy Cognac, Grand Marnier Liqueur, lemon juice.

Sophisticated décor in the tony location helps showcase a vibrant place to eat. But the room is never intimidating and always comfortable, as Il Tinello East delivers an experience that is perfect to celebrate your passion for food. All is done with classic white glove tableside servings that create elegance and embrace the passion for a truly wonderful old-fashioned dining experience.

For a truly wonderful classic New York City meal look no further than the exquisite offerings at Il Tinello East.

MVVO ART/AD ART SHOW 2023 LAUNCHES CALL FOR ARTISTS FOR POWERHOUSE CONTEMPORARY ART SHOW

Call for Artists Announced with winning artist to receive a Specialty Clio Award and Top 10 artists will show their work on outdoor billboards by OUTFRONT

MvVO ART will bring the AD ART SHOW 2023 to Powerhouse Arts, Brooklyn, New York from October 15-16, 2023. This contemporary art show bridges the Art World and the Advertising industry, by featuring fine art created by artists working in advertising, design, directly for brands, and in related fields, or who began in the industry.

Since it launched in 2018 at Sotheby’s, the MvVO ART/AD ART SHOW has been introducing art lovers, collectors, curators, gallerists, and critics to the talented fine artists from the advertising industry. Participants in the annual show are approved by a selection committee made up of contemporary art experts and prize winners are determined by a jury of collectors. MvVO ART supports participating artists with an ongoing Artsy gallery page where the Art can be purchased and extensive social media promotion.

MvVO ART/AD ART SHOW 2023 will exhibit paintings, sculptures, drawings, photography, and mixed media works at Powerhouse Arts, a leading contemporary Art Fabrication Facility housed in the spectacular former Brooklyn Rapid Transit power plant. Built in 1904 and once affectionately known as “The Batcave.” Powerhouse Arts was redesigned and reimagined by Herzog & de Meuron, the architects of the Tate Modern. The perfect setting to see contemporary art.

“Our artists are following in the footsteps of Edward Hopper—an Art Director, Rene Magritte—a Graphic Designer, and Andy Warhol—an illustrator, and many other famous names in Art who began in advertising. The 6th edition of MvVO ART/AD ART SHOW is an extraordinary opportunity for emerging artists to get discovered!” said Maria van Vlodrop, Founder & CEO of MvVO ART, and the creator of AD ART SHOW—The Platform for Artists from Advertising, named a Top Ten Cultural Shaper, Creative 100 Adweek Award

EVENTS | RESIDENT

NYC Second Chance Rescue will be hosting their 3rd annual Rescue Ball on Thursday April 27th, 2023 at 48 Wall Street in New York City. The charity aims to raise critical funds to help continue their mission of providing second chances to critically ill, injured, and abused dogs and cats.

NYC Second Chance Rescue is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization established in 2009. With the help of a community of donors and supporters, the Charity has saved over 14,000 lives from an unimaginable fate. NYC Second Chance Rescue concentrates its efforts on large breed dogs and animals in need of critical life-saving care. These two criteria make up most of the euthanasias in the United States. Nine out of ten animals that enter NYC Second Chance Rescue were once set to be euthanized at a municipal shelter.

NYC Second Chance Rescue is proud to be honoring Georgina Bloomberg and Joe Gatto, who will be recognized with the “Hero Award” for their dedication to animal welfare, and Dr. Peter Roufail, DVM, for “Veterinarian of the Year.”

The evening will be Hosted by Tony and Grammy Award-Nominated Actress and Singer, Orfeh With Special Guests Melissa Gorga and Constantine Maroulis. The evening features a vegan menu, specialty cocktails, live and silent auctions, and entertainment, followed by dancing to music by DJ GEO ROC.

Led by its founders Jennifer Brooks and Lisa Blanco and Vice President Lisa Rose, NYC Second Chance Rescue is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 2009 specializing in rescuing and rehabilitating discriminated breeds, critically injured, neglected, and abused dogs and cats. This year NYC Second Chance Rescue is celebrating 14 years and saving over 14,000 lives.

NYC Second Chance Rescue provides all levels of medical care and a healing and safe sanctuary for all pets through our foster care system and our Rescue Center. We do not discriminate on age, size, breed, or medical needs. We have a soft spot for pit-bulls, seniors, and hospice patients. We also love our community and believe that families should not be pulled apart because of financial restraints. The Charity offers free food and critical medical care for families running on hard times. These programs help keep families together and beloved pets out of the shelter system.

With support from the public, NYC Second Chance Rescue can continue to provide critical Second Chances to animals in need. Why do we do what we do? Because they matter.

Members of the Organizing Committee for the event includes; Jared Epstein (Chair), Jessica Peters (Chair), Antonio Fuccio, Avra Hart, Barry Mullineaux, Bessy Gatto, Brandon Colon, Chris Reda, Dylan Lauren, Jenné Newton-Haydon, John DiMatteo, Kingsley Crawford-Smith, Kate McEntee, Marie Moody, Nathania Nisonson, Robert Cadiz Saldarriaga, Richie Romero and Shouka Amirsolimani.
