KENNEBUNKPORT Once just a quaint fishing village, Kennebunkport, Maine, is quickly becoming a vacation

destination for travelers seeking an easy-to-reach location, fine dining, countless activities and luxurious—yet affordable—accommodations. A simple four-hour drive from New York, Kennebunkport is an ideal weekend escape for those looking for a quick getaway. We pick some of our favorite spots in this beautiful jewel of the southern Maine coast. NATURAL LUXURY If you truly want to experience the beauty of Maine, but with all the comforts of a luxury hotel, it doesn’t get any better than Hidden Pond. Tucked away on 60 acres of birch and sweet fern forest, Hidden Pond has been referred to as “the Ritz Carlton of summer camps.” All of Hidden Pond’s beautifully appointed guest cottages feature flat screen TVs, air conditioning, wireless internet, screened porches, outdoor rain showers, Frette linens, fireplaces, and iPod docking stations. Two-bedroom cottages also include full kitchens which can be stocked with your favorites prior to arrival. In

addition, a daily breakfast basket will be delivered right to your door. At Hidden Pond, the hardest part of each day may be deciding what to do next. Wander meandering nature trails, or take a beach cruiser bike and explore Kennebunkport’s winding back roads. Go paddleboarding, learn how to build a bird house, or take a yoga class surrounded by nature at the Farm. Or for a true indulgence, book an appointment at the Tree Spa, nestled into the trees above the lush forest floor. If the beach is more your speed, head to Hidden Pond’s sister property, The Tides Beach Club, where “Beach Tenders” will be sure you have a plush towel, comfy chair and cooler packed with chilled water. They’ll even bring you lunch on the beach. Hidden Pond also features several onsite dining options, including Earth, a collaboration with Boston chef and James Beard Award-winner Ken Oringer. Earth offers farm-fresh ingredients grown on Hidden Pond’s own organic farm, along with local meats, seafood, and cheeses—all overlooking the pond and nightly bonfires. BEACH CHIC If you like the beach, The Tides Beach Club is the place for you. The only hotel overlooking pristine Goose Rocks Beach, The Tides is one of Kennebunkport’s true

The Grand also has a convenient onsite gourmet food and wine shop featuring a great variety of adult beverages, delicious prepared salads and sandwiches, and everything you’d need for a beachside picnic. Next door, Fringe Hair Art Salon and Day Spa offers hair styling, skin treatments and massage.

“grand dames,” and after an extensive rejuvenation last year, it’s also one of the ‘Port’s chicest resorts. The rooms at the Tides have a soothing seaside ambiance, mixed with surprising and whimsical contemporary touches. This same eclectic mix extends to the common areas, where traditional white wing back chairs and lamps made from sea shells sit side-by-side with “invisible” bar stools and modern art. The Tides has a fun, energetic bar, and also offers dining. Savor an after dinner cocktail while rocking on the expansive front porch, or dine outside on the patio, surrounded by the sights, sounds, and smells of the sea. Escape to the beach this summer…without the Hamptons traffic! A CLASSIC...ENHANCED Located in the heart of Kennebunkport’s lively Dock Square, the Kennebunkport Inn has always been a favorite because of its great location, outstanding service, and award-winning restaurant, One Dock. After a just-completed renovation, though, it’s gotten even better. Highlights of the renovation include a new lobby and common area, a sun terrace with outdoor fireplace and cozy deck chaises overlooking the Kennebunk River, and a new bar at One Dock. The changes also extend to One Dock’s menu, with a greater emphasis on small plates that showcase Maine’s abundant local seafood and produce. The Kennebunkport Inn is also a great place to stop by for cocktails, especially

during summer months, with a daily Happy Hour on the patio. IN-TOWN ELEGANCE Across the bridge in Lower Village is the ‘Port’s newest boutique hotel, The Grand. Though just opening this summer, the Grand already promises to be one of the area’s hottest spots. Located on Chase Hill, the Grand’s expansive windows and balconies provide sweeping views of the Kennebunk River and Dock Square. Elegantly appointed rooms offer a slightly urban feel, with soft, warm tones of Saffron and cream, chic furnishings and marble bathrooms featuring gleaming Waterworks hardware.

QUAINT & COZY CHARM Just outside of town are the Cottages at Cabot Cove, the quintessential New England cottage experience. Each of these uniquely designed cottages features a kitchenette and terrace, which is like your own private garden paradise. Take a rowboat or kayak to explore the Kennebunk River, or just hunker down with a picnic lunch or a good book in an Adirondack chair overlooking the Cove. SECLUDED SPLENDOR Down the winding back road from Cabot Cove is the Old Fort Inn. Once a grand hotel in Kennebunkport’s Cape Arundel, the original carriage house and stables have been converted into elegantly appointed, spacious guest rooms. Decorated in a traditional New England style, the rooms feature rich linens, custom wood furnishings, and four-poster beds. Outside, a spacious patio and heated lap pool feature plush chaise lounges, inviting you to soak up the summer sun. Old Fort’s Club House, with its collection of art deco books, deep leather sofas and floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace, is a great place to linger. For families looking to stay a while, a chic, three bedroom cottage is available for rent…a homeaway-from-home on Maine’s southern coast. This hidden gem is perfect for couples looking to getaway—tucked just far enough away to be a tranquil oasis, yet minutes from downtown Kennebunkport. Still wondering if you should book a stay in Kennebunkport this summer? Well, stop. Treat yourself. You won’t be disappointed, and the only downside is that you won’t want to leave this beautiful and lively town.

An Unbeatable Combination of Beauty and Brains

M

By Christopher A. Pape

elissa Francis of Fox Business Network fame is a beauty. Well, obviously she is more than just good looking, with a degree in economics from Harvard and an ultra-popular show on the aforementioned channel, she is a genius too! All this adds up to produce a woman that is stunningly elegant and impeccably graceful. It is no wonder than that Melissa Francis is smoking hot. Beauty and brains – she’s got it all.

When I first sat down with her, I knew I was in for a treat. With a spotless office and flashing an enticing smile, we got down to business. What follows is an interview, which is playful, insightful and was a delight to do. Melissa promises to write for our November edition and come to our big bash (I’m holding her to it). I hope you enjoy the piece as much as I enjoyed meeting her!

Lilium Located beneath the W Union Square (201 Park Ave. South; at 17th Street), Lilium’s seductive, subterranean vibe, representing the dark, mysterious feel of downtown New York, was designed by Gulla Jonsdottir of G+Design, and inspired by the intricate look of a cave of wild lilies. New York City’s GREAT HOTELS By Bob & Sandy Nesoff

There’s little doubt that New York City has, arguably, the best choice of top hotels in the world. By no means does this suggest that London, Paris, Bucharest has a paucity of upscale digs, but merely a statement of fact.

presents much the same dilemma. There’s no doubt that an argument could be made for any hotel left off the list but what we have here is simply a matter of personal opinion and choice as well as first hand knowledge.

When an editor suggests an article picking the five best hotels in New York, that’s somewhat akin to asking which of your children is your favorite. Any parent worth his or her salt would say that each one was on a par with the other.

Price and snob appeal are not necessarily indicators of quality. At the top of the list are comfort, amenities, location, location, location.

Picking great hotels in the Big Apple

Hotel Plaza Athenee

All of that being said, following is a personal viewpoint of the best hotels in New York City: The Plaza Athenee must be considered at or near the top on any list. Opened in 1927 as the Hotel Alrae, the landmark building became the Plaza Athenee in 1987 and has undergone two multi-million dollar refurbishments since. No expense was spared in providing comfort for guests of the hotel favored by the late Princess Diana and the late actress Elizabeth Taylor during their New York forays. Located on quiet East 64 Street, a tree-lined residential neighborhood, the hotel is steps from both Park and Madison Avenues and within walking distance of Central Park, Museums, art galleries and some of New York’s best shopping. A hallmark of the hotel is the fact that both staff and guests are in for the long haul. There are employees who have been with Plaza Athenee, a member of The Leading Hotels of the World, since it opened and guests who return with regularity. Staff greets them by name and is cognizant of their personal preferences. Dutta, an Indonesian native, has worked here for 14 years as a bartender. Recognizing returning guests, he will frequently have their orders prepared before they have a chance to order. Attention to detail is obvious throughout the hotel. Comfort is immediately obvious in each guest room and suite. The daytime view across the city and Central Park is beautiful but cannot compare to the same at night as the city’s lights glisten below. A unique feature is the spa. Here at Plaza Athenee guests are treated to total privacy and comfort. Guests are afforded to a private suite where treatments are applied and they can relax in a separate sitting room.

St. Regis One of the iconic and storied hotels in the United States, the St. Regis has been voted the number one hotel in New York City and years by the Mobil Travel Guide. Sitting at the corner of Fifth Avenue and 55th Street since its ground breaking in 1902 by John Jacob Astor, the hotel began life in what was one of the city’s most elegant neighborhoods of the time. The neighborhood may have changed, but the St. Regis has lost none of its glamour and elegance. The moment you enter the lobby from under its Port Cochere you can feel the presence of the famous people who have been guests over the past 108 years since it was opened in 1904. Salvador Dali held court in the cocktail lounge on a near nightly basis. He is said to have stayed there with his wife and pet ocelot for nearly a decade and a half. Sisters Lorna Luft and Liza Minnelli were guests as were Ethel Merman, Dustin Hoffman, Princess Maria Beatrice of Savoy and the Apollo 14 astronauts. The Bloody Mary was invented by the hotel’s bar tender, Fernand Petiot, in 1934, beginning its popularity as the Red Snapper. Astor added innovations that were unheard of at the time. He had a system of airand a special design for disposal of dust and refuse, today known as a vacuum. Operated today by the Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, the St. Regis has lost none of its panache or dignity in a busy world.

Great Weekend Getaways By Marianne Belmonte

If you’re feeling remotely the way I am then you too are anxious for this summer to be over. Weather wise it has been very unpleasant and if you followed suit then staying indoors was where you spent most of your time. Relief is on the horizon; the crisp cool air is just around the corner. New Yorkers are fortunate to live in an area where we are just a drive

or a cruise away from the great outdoors. From the New England coast down to the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland there is much to explore and much fun to be had. I would like to share with you a few of my favorite getaways and hope you will take the time to experience some of what this season and this region has to offer. Enjoy!

Dutchess County Have you ever ventured up the Hudson River? Fall is the perfect time to take a ride or better yet a cruise. The foliage along the river is breathtaking and when you arrive at your destination, whether it is Poughkeepsie or New Hyde Park, there will be many fascinating things to do and see. A history buff ? Then FDR’s estate or one of the various other estates that belonged to the rich and famous from the turn of the twentieth century, is the place for you. If hiking is your thing try the Appalachian Trail or the Duchess Wine Trail. Please let’s not forget the Culinary Institute of America is in Duchess County and if you’re a foodie go over for a gourmet meal or take a cooking class. Additional information is available at www.co.duchess.ny.us

Poconos How about the mountains with lakes? Poconos Mountains offers the best of both worlds. Take a weekend adventure and enjoy the beautiful fall landscape along with a myriad of activities that this region has to offer. Enjoy gambling? Well there is a casino and a racetrack. Pick your game. Romance? Stay at one of the many B&Bs where you can feel as if you’ve gone back to a more gentile time. Stay at a nearby resort where the activities for both child and adult alike, their website www.800poconos.com and see for yourself.

Thimble Islands Ok here’s a place that I’m sure not too many a familiar with, the Thimble Islands. Located off the coast of Connecticut these archipelago islands are in the Long Island Sound. Take a specialty cruise, wine and cheese or sunset in the tranquil waters, from the town of Branford and in less than an hour you will have arrived. Breathe in the cool fresh sea air and enjoy these special islands that tell tales of long ago when pirates roamed the seas. The islands are sure great views and great people are hallmarks of these special islands. Visit www. thimbleislands.com for a schedule.

The East End Rather do a seaside destination close to NYC? Eastern Long Island is the place to go. Take advantage of the twiddling crowds in the fall; before the winter sets in and take a stroll along the many miles of beach in Suffolk County or window shop in a quaint little town in the Hamptons. Golf anyone? Suffolk County has several championship courses all open to the public. Like taking tours? Choose from one of the thirty wineries or take a tour of the historic mansions on Long Island’s Gold Coast. You can just relax or take a 1/2 day party boat out to sea. If the children are with you why not take them to the Atlantic Aquarium in Riverhead and then end your day with a dinner at one of the seaside villages. Try the website at www. discoverlongisland.com

Baltimore and Chesapeake Bay How about a pet friendly destination? Well Baltimore, Maryland touts itself at being just that. Their website lists many accommodations as well as restaurants where pets are allowed, fully appreciating the relationship that some of us have with our four-legged companions. Of course this isn’t what Baltimore is famous for. We all know about their Inner Harbor but have we taken the time to actually go there when after all we have our own South Street Seaport? Well I’m telling you it is well worth the effort. The seafood restaurants are some of the best on the east coast and while you’re there you can bring the kids over to the National

Aquarium. It’s great fun - they’ll love it. Maryland has much more to offer then Baltimore alone and if you are planning on going for a few days I highly recommend spending sometime in at least one of their state parks. Assateague is an island state park where you can see wild horses roaming on the sandy beaches and if you’re lucky watch them swim in the ocean over to a neighboring island. Calvert Cliffs is a kid friendly park featuring a recycled tire playground, freshwater and tidal marshlands and thirteen miles of hiking trails. The cliffs were once under water some 20 million

years ago and as a result one can see fossils of prehistoric species of sharks, whales and birds. It is thrilling for all to experience. Then there is Sandy Point State park along the Chesapeake Bay. Fishing and crabbing from the shoreline is permitted and the Symbi Trail offers hiking for the adventurers in your group where you will see an old plant and animal wildlife. Go to www. maryland.gov website to learn more. Well wherever it is you choose to go and with whomever you choose to share your adventure just relax take it all in and most of all ENJIOY and who knows I might even

NEW YORK MILITARY ACADEMY CO-ED t COLLEGE PREP t 7TH - 12TH GRADE BOARDING & DAY SCHOOL Established in 1889, the 120 acre campus is conveniently located just 60 miles north of New York City. We are dedicated to developing young leaders who have that competitive hunger and desire for success and fulfillment in college and in life, and who desire to be successful leaders in the future. Utilizing the military model for leadership and development, and a rigorous curriculum grounded by a demand for competence in the classical disciplines, our graduates are thoughtfully prepared to seek out extraordinary lives of accountability and service. NYMA’s competitive academics and athletic programs are enhanced by a structured boarding environment that includes daily tutorials, a nightly, mentored study hall, a robust ESL program and a 12:1 student/teacher ratio in the classroom. Cadets enjoy opportunities to not only learn accountability but to practice peer leadership and to accept important responsibility. One of the things that set NYMA apart from other college prep schools is what we call our “real-life leadership lab”. Putting our

cadets in positions of increased accountability and responsibility in the Cadet Corps, while at the same time requiring them to maintain a high level of academic and athletic participation, requires them to constantly improve their organization, planning, time management and multi-tasking skills. We believe development in these critical areas gives our graduates a distinct advantage over others as they transition into some of the more prestigious colleges and universities in America. Please take the time to browse the website and become familiar with what sets New York Military Academy apart from the other college prep schools. Then schedule a visit with our admissions office and come see for yourself why our cadets are SET APART FOR EXCELLENCE by being inspired, engaged and ready for the future.

Seven Wonders of Structures By Alexander Berki

New York holds a collection of grand architecture, most of which is standing out as it towers over the Manhattan skyline but, if you know where to look you can still discover secrets treasures for New Yorks past tucked away and holding on to a life that once was.

The Beaux-Arts Arts building of Ralph Lauren- Built in a style that was last fashionable in the early 1920’s, Ralph Lauren created a 22.000 square foot building that looks like it came from New York’s past. Directly across the street from the Gertrude Rhinelander Waldo mansion, the choice to build in this style was to keep with Lauren’s design philosophy, “timeless not trends.” The building has been featured in Architectural Digest which stated, “The project also presented an opportunity to retrieve the corner lot’s long-lost grandeur: From 1894 until 1951, when it was razed, a Federal Revival brick townhouse by Gilded Age tastemaker Stanford White occupied the wonderful site.”

The Mansion of Gertrude Rhinelander Waldo The Gothic Revival mansion on the corner of 72nd and Madison Ave is now home to the Ralph Lauren store, but the mansion has a mournful past. Built in 1898 for the heiress Gertrude Rhinelander Waldo, whose family connections date back to George the III, she

The mansion was fully furnished at a cost of one million dollars, however, without occupancy full into converted into storefronts and the upper Ralph Lauren Acquired the mansion and it

The Strand Hotel By Lisa Loverro

Located on West 37th Street, the Strand Hotel exudes a sense of style and sophistication; and a winner in my book for anyone seeking a midtown hotel stay nearby to the Fashion District or Times Square.

Paying homage to the fashion district, the hotel’s lobby, small but stylish, is adorned with cool colors and artistic photographs pulled directly from the pages of fashion magazines, exuding an air of retro sophistication. The 177 rooms, small but clean, were well equipped with all the modern amenities including an iPod docking station and complimentary Wi-Fi. The bed linens were 100% Egyptian cotton sheets, bathrooms were clean and the showers small, but with the perfect water pressure (always important in my Their restaurant, The Strand Bistro, is open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner and offers a trendy take on American dishes under the direction of Executive Chef Kelvin Fernandez. Romantic, chic and very fashionable, the restaurant’s décor is quite eclectic, using iconic fashion images, bold colors and a beautiful aquarium to set its tone. Offering a seasonal menu inspired then moved onto the double cut pork chop with apricot chutney. This hard to come by and a its great spot to dine whether or not one is a guest of the hotel. The Strand Bistro also houses an extensive selection of wines and specialty cocktails. But perhaps what sets the Strand Hotel apart from others in the area is its spectacular rooftop bar and lounge; Top of the Strand. Looking to impress an out-of-towner? Take them New York City with amazing views of the Empire State building. Weekend nights come alive with entertainment this rooftop scene on a Sunday evening, when a very cool DJ was spinning R&B classics and current hits. Admittedly, these and will be ‘suffered’ without an accompanying choir of violins. Nonetheless, the solution may well have been found by Heather Lockington, who has channeled all her experience gathered from her extensive travels toward creating the only luxury boutique cottage hotel in the Cayman Islands. accommodation with an undiluted sense of place and authenticity. In other words, she has set out to create a resort with the luxury of nature. This is an uncompromising balance. The approach to such a resolution is a relatively unique method; 4 cottages accommodating 4 groups of people. This exclusivity ensures that visitors receive the greatest possible attention from the resort, while avoiding the inevitable crowd of tourists found at more conventional resorts. All of these cottages strictly comply with the boutique’s theme of ‘Caribbean chic’, giving a fusion of modern design

If you don’t want to sweat too much, biking is also a good choice for exploring the generous views that the mountains had to offer. I picked an easy trail to the Woody Creek. Because it was mainly downhill, I got to enjoy the speed and wind yet still catching all the beautiful sights of the creek, waterfall, mountains and residences. No matter it’s looking up to the sapphire sky or looking down the valley just steps off the trail, I rejoiced like a school kid. The adventure that I’m most proud of is paragliding. Although I hesitated, I was reassured that a seasoned pilot would be was that I was in a truck climbing up the bumpy hill. After spreading the glider on the ground and adjusting all cords, my pilot stood behind me and buckled my seats to his suit. Now the only thing we needed to do was wait for the wind. “Three-Two-One!” he shouted. We started running downhill and before I knew it, we were already in the air. If only words can express

complicated machine, just a helmet and two manual controls in each hand for pulling the cords, paragliding is truly an activity to reconnect with nature. Suddenly the world was clear. There was nothing in between the wilderness and me. For me, that moment of taking in all the breathtaking views while gliding above the valley was a life changing experience. The fear of falling from the sky was gone; instead, it was the ecstasy of being free and alive! After an active day, what could be more satisfying than a good meal? Restaurants in Aspen surely won’t let you down. To name a few, Cache Cache and Above the Salt are famous for their aesthetic courses in French and Italian style; Kenichi is loved for their innovative Japanese dishes. Their eel sushi wrapped with avocado and topped with a thin piece of strawberry was very impressive. The sour sweet juice of strawberry teased the taste buds while contrasting the texture slice. My favorite

restaurant was Brexie Brasserie, which is on dangling from the ceiling, Brexie serves guests with traditional French cuisine in an intimate ambience. The taste of their Boeuf Bourguignon was phenomenal. No complicated plating, just a simple hot stew onion, carrot and potato boiled till soft. Take in a spoonful of a little bit of everything with the warm soup and let yourself give in to the richness of it. It’s everything a traveler could ask for; it felt like home again. Besides food, Aspen is also a paradise of wine. Try wine tasting at IWM Cellars by Italian wine merchants. The servers were very knowledgeable and made good recommendations of how to pair up your wine with dishes. My favorite match is

Camembert with Chacra Pinot Noir from Argentina. The subtle nature of pinot paired with the creamy Camembert. As a mountain town with a highly developed commercial center, Aspen has everything for galleries, jewelry shops, boutique stores and

Fabulous NYC fall finds By Amy Statuto

I met Brooklyn based Flavor Paper at NYC’s International contemporary furniture fair and immediately fell in love with their product! Flavor paper produces wallpaper both hand screened and digitally printed. All of their papers use water based inks or eco-solvents to be as green as possible (a huge plus in my book!) And because Flavor Paper is produced to order, you have the option to interchange colors and grounds with handscreened wallpaper and can choose scale and colors for digital wallpaper. They also allow you to customize your own paper. Your options are endless! What more could you ask for?! For more information visit www.flavorpaper.com

By Alexander Berki What was once considered uptown, Washington Square still holds many of its characteristics from the days when New York’s upper crust first began to build their modest, simple, but large, townhomes on its boarders. With the beginning of the industrial boom and the immigration populations growing everyday, the slums and rift raft of old New York’s downtown was swiftly moving uptown. To escape the crowded streets and those people who were considered to be, for a lack of a better term, “common,” society began to look for refuge in the uncharted wilderness above 14th Street. At the time few people lived above 14th street and the undeveloped land was then considered to be the country, consisting of mostly farmers. A change would come with the woman Edith Wharton believed had, “characteristic independents.” Mary Mason Jones, who was fictionalized as, “Old New York’s Dowager Empress, Catherine Manson Mingott,” in the “ The Age of Innocence,” was the first of her set to develop a fashionable home in the “inaccessible wilderness near the Central Park.” Known as Marble Row, Jones commissioned architect Robert Mook to erect an elaborate collection of adjoining houses in the French Renaissance style on an inherited plot of property along Fifth Avenue between 58th and 57th Streets. In Edith Wharton’s immortalization of Jones and her “Marble Row,” she wrote, “It was her habit to sit in a window of her sitting–room on the ground floor, as if watching calmly for life and fashion to flow northward to her solitary doors. She seemed in no hurry to have them come, for her patience was equaled by her confidence. She was sure that presently the hoardings, the quarries, the one–story saloons, the wooden green–houses in ragged gardens, and the rocks from which goats surveyed the scene, would vanish before the advance of residences as stately as her own—perhaps (for she was an impartial woman) even statelier; and that the cobble–stones over which the old clattering omnibuses bumped would be replaced by smooth asphalt, such as people reported having seen in Paris.”

houses with the exception of Leonard Jerome’s Mansion on the Corner of 26th and Madison. Built in 1859, the mansion featured a mansard roof, in the Second Empire style, a private ballroom and a unique feature of a 600 seat private theater.

Once the fashionable flow of the Gilded Age reached the East 30’s the farmland now known, as Murray Hill, became the start of architectural one-upsmanship. Starting the trend of the 5th Avenue palaces was A.T. Stewart. On a plot of land on 5th Avenue and 34th street, directly across from the reigning queen of society Mrs. Astor, the department store mogul commissioned architect John Kellum to build a mansion in the Second Empire style, the fashionable style of the day. Built to suit the Stewart’s newly established wealth, the mansion received such a buzz that crowds would gather in front of the home and gossip about its “unapologetically pretentious” exterior with its excessive use of marble and collection of styles. Few had seen the interior but it was said to be, “ plain, cold and, severe.” It wasn’t until society reached the area near the central park, as Mary Mason Jones predicted that the Palaces became As the grid of Manhattan laid itself out northward, Old New York, architecturally significant. steeped in its tradition, never veered far from the Washington Square branches of Fifth and Madison Avenues. Vanderbilt collaborated with Richard Morris Hunt and created the Petit Chateau at 660 5th Avenue, as the proper house of her branch of the Vanderbilt family. The home was built in the French Renaissance style and created an architectural frenzy. Because the Petite Chateau was seen as the great swan song of the great New York City mansions. It was well balanced, had the perfect blend of historical influence and decorative restraint. To open her house Alva threw a great ball in honor of her best friend Consuelo Yznaga, the Duchess of Manchester. The party was the most anticipated party of the day and the greatest social coup ever to take place in New York. In planning her great party Alva purposely did not invite Mrs. Astor, because of social customs Alva was not allowed to call on New York’s queen because she had not yet called on Alva. This forced Caroline into a wall. Because her daughter so wanted to attend the party Caroline Astor sent her footman to the Petit Chateau with her calling card. This small piece of paper that read nothing more than “Mrs. Astor” said that the Vanderbilt’s were now part of society. The erecting of the Petit Chateau was so successful that 5th Avenue in the East 50’s would come to be known as Vanderbilt Row.

The home was not significant in its style however it was the largest of kind with 130 rooms and took up almost the entire block. The home would later be tore down and its décor donated to the Met Museum. The palaces of 5th Avenue would continue to rise along the grid and with the commercial rift raft of NYC swiftly moving uptown they would then fall. Few of the homes still stand today but, remnants of them are sprinkled about, breaking from the tradition of the glass high rises of today, as they broke from the tradition of

A Man as Great In the mind of New Yorkers, there are few institutions that have as much gravitas and dignitas as WNET Channel 13. Even for this curmudgeon, I remember, with fondness, watching Sesame Street and Nature (which is actually produced by Channel 13). The station only brings fond memories. But the truth of the matter is that it had become staid - as up-to-date as a typewriter. That has all changed with the hiring of their new President and CEO, Neal Shapiro. With his many years at NBC he has brought a renewed sense of purpose; infusing this great institution with energy and passion. He sat down with us to talk business and the improvements he has ushered in.

Later, I got into the High School for Performing Arts and from that moment on my life has always been in the theater. It was only when I got married that I started doing TV work.

Sheldon Harnick (SH): We called our friend, Jane Lahr, she has a literary agency and thought the photos were wonderful. She was excited because the pictures were from New York and there was a market for that. So, I wrote poems with them, we hired a designer who did a great job.

PETER STILTON: THE ARTIST SPEAKS ABOUT CREATIVITY By Maxine Albert

Internationally celebrated artist Peter Stilton’s paintings and sculptures are in private and corporate collections all over the world. His varied painting style includes abstract, representational and impressionistic works. His canvases of Rolls-Royces, fanciful circuses with lions playing with beach balls, musical instruments hanging on trees, chairs

world. I’m not dealing with a material world. I have to go beyond. The artist is not in the present tense; he’s like behind a door – hard to explain. When I go to a museum, things reach out to me. The artist has to be in constant contact with the past, present and future. You know it intuitively.

Maxine: Were you napping? P: Yes. When I’m painting, I cycle on and off. Once I’m into a painting, I never know much – going into it. So I’m constantly thinking of it, all absorbing. Every minute I’m working on it, every decision, for color, brush stroke – minutes go into hours. The ‘creative process’ – can’t be doing other things – I’m in another

M: What happened after that?

M: Can painting be taught? P: No, absolutely no. Creativity is innate. Technique, tools – aspects of how to can be taught.

professor of art, humanities and cinema,

Peter: (yawning ) Hello.

P: Somewhat, both my mother and father, artistic geniuses, themselves – were deeply

P: My painting of a haiku poem also got criticized in school so I decided I would never take a panting lesson and keep things to myself. I kept painting and am self taught. When I teach, I’m careful not to invade another person’s world and process.

medieval castles, and French landscapes, all have a whimsical quality. With titles like ‘Elinore and Montague at the Palace of Mirrors’ and ‘Chess Pieces crossing the English Channel,’ the viewer enters an intimate, imaginary world – free to create their own interpretation.

American to have a one-man show at The Sorbonne and was commissioned by the Saudi Royal family for their summer palace. An accomplished artist who never took a class in painting, he’s an unaffected guy who lived in Greta Garbo’s old house in Beverly Hills and likes to wear shorts while driving his Rolls-Royces. Currently living in Tampa, Florida with his wife Jill, and two sons, the artist speaks about the nature of creativity.

Photgraphy By Robert Peacock

M: Who inspired you?

M: How would you describe your process? P: In my poetry and my paintings I try to look into things and see a kind of basic matrix from which everything evolves. So, Rolls-Royces are like pipe organs. M: What was the ‘aha’ moment you decided to become an artist? P: I realized as a kid, you could paint yourself anything you didn’t have – houses, cars, anything. What fun it would be to pack up the kids and take a ride Upstate NY to one of the many farms to go apple picking. Well, you’re in luck because now is the perfect time to take advantage of the great weather ahead of us, the beautiful scenery and a great time to be had with the family. If you’ve never been then you don’t know what you’re missing. This is a perfect opportunity to spend quality time with the kids teaching them about how we get our produce and how man and nature has provided us with an abundance of food. Yes, this is your “green” moment too; stressing the importance of taking care of our environment and when we do the rewards we reap. Ok so enough of my soap box. Just pack up the kids, the dog too and pack a picnic lunch and head upstate. This time of year you can choose from end of the season tomatoes, further into the season raspberries and of course as October approaches the pumpkins will be ready to harvest. There are many farms to choose from that along with harvesting crops, you can go on a hay ride, visit their gift shop or dine at their casual restaurant. Check out the website pickyourown.org or just Google pick apples,

Let’s Go Back to School With The Mom’s Code By Eileen Wacker

We are now in the throes of back to school. I can now see I will survive summer vacation, but fall is at our doorsteps and all the pressures of balancing work, school, marriage and health come back to life. I face so many challenges as a married mom of four, trying to build a company. I’m having dreams of back to school nights, sports and activity sign-ups and orientations, electronics policing, earlier enforced bedtimes, and getting up and on time. Then we get into our routine. We just never have a dramafree week. Forgotten meds, wrong shirt on school sports. It’s a constant game of cat and mouse. When my phone rings and certain numbers crop up, I’ll cringe but answer. Because I am a Mom. There are too many “little catches” I make that cannot be explained in an instruction letter. I am not a creature of habit – I am a “catcher” by habit. I catch everyone’s problems and stresses. I am the absorber of stress. And when I answer the phone, there is always an issue requiring immediate attention.

“The Mom’s Code” I’ve heard of a “man code” many times. Okay I get it, there are some unwritten rules that should be adhered to if you are a standup guy. I, for one, am a stressed-out working mom and I believe a “Mom’s code” could help us all. An important issue: working moms versus stay-at-home moms and could “the code” apply to both. I was a stay-at-home mom for 6 years. I left the work force when my oldest, at the time three and a half, needed open heart surgery. Then we ended up moving to Seoul, South Korea when we had four So I was a stay-at-home wife and mom and did not know if I would ever go back to the workforce. I was wildly busy trying to keep a sane life, living a foreign country. Now, back in the US for the past several years I have been trying to establish a business and I work non-stop as it is just getting off the ground. As a stay-at-home mom I wore a ponytail most days because I could squeeze in a rinse

off shower but blow-drying took too much time. And I was in better shape because I got to work out. Working moms really struggle with making enough time to work out so they are constantly trying to shed that extra few pounds. Stay-at-home moms have to shed a few pounds because we eat our kids’ food. Moms’ stress shows up as bitten and chipped up. I guess the bottom line is stay-at-home and working moms are stressed out and largely about the same things, so we can all agree to one code? Life is Challenging, Kids are Non-Stop, Let’s Let’s All Agree to: U ÌÊÌ iÊ > >Ê À> > U->ÛiÊ iÀÊ7 i Ê- i½ÃÊ À Ü } U L `iÊLÞÊ>Ê «iÌ Ì Ê >ÕÃi U iÌÊ>Ê ÌÊ ÀiÊ7 Ài`Ê>ÃÊ Ã U ÕÀ Ã Ê ÕÀÊ- Õ ÃÊÜ Ì Ê À ÃÊ } ÌÊ"ÕÌ U > `Ê/ }iÌ iÀÊ>}> ÃÌÊ Ê/ À i Ì Àà U1ÃiÊ ÕÀÊ >ÌiÃÊ Ì Ê i «Ê ÕÃÊ Ài i LiÀÊ Ì iÊ 7 i Ê7iÊ Ài

School Lunches in the Allergy Age:

It is time to think outside the sandwich? By Margaret E. Hyde

Know Your School’s Policy

Be Creative & Plan Ahead

First and most importantly is to know your school’s policy.

Getting beyond the sandwich takes a little more creativity

There isn’t a national school policy or protocol dealing with food allergies. Policies can vary from school to school or even from homeroom to homeroom. You need to make sure that you check with your child’s teacher and/or principal before you pack containing cow’s milk, peanuts and tree nuts are among the most common food allergies for children and also the ones most common allergens that may be an issue are egg, soy, wheat and seafood.

up with more fun and nutritious lunches that may even great substitutes. They are high in protein and healthy fats and can be eaten with vegetable sticks such as carrots, celery, bell peppers or baked pita, beet or sweet potato chips. There are also lots of variations of hummus and bean dip including roasted red pepper, roasted beet, sun dried tomato, spinach and feta. Equally appealing and healthy are wraps and kebabs. You can add your child’s favorite fruit along with a protein like chicken for a fun to eat kebab. My favorite substitutes for dairy based condiments are honey mustard and bbq sauce. You can also use tahini sauce for a peanut butter like taste on a wrap or for dipping a kebab.

Try a Bento Box in children’s lunches and try something new, it is hard to tell if they are really eating if their lunch is packed in disposable a meal in a container with small compartments for each prefer to use small stainless steel containers. Using these reusable containers is more sustainable for the environment and allows you to see what your child is really eating.

New York State fruit and New York City, thanks to the late John Lindsay, is known worldwide as The Big Apple. Thousands of families not only like to sink their teeth into the crunchy pulp of a big, red apple, but they like to get them as fresh and delicious as possible. From late summer through mid-fall they trek out of the canyons of New York to nearby farms catering to would-be migrant laborers who enjoy the fresh air and the family fun of picking apples directly from the tree. For children it is not only a bonding experience with parents and siblings, but a fun day in the country and the ability to see where their food actually comes from. Some apple farms also have a variety of other produce-peaches, several varieties of berries, tomatoes-that are available for picking as well. There are farms that allow visitors, especially children, to get up to and close with animals such as milk cows and sheep. Several of the farms are relatively close to Manhattan and make for a great ride and day how they charge. Some, provide paper bags in a variety of sizes and charge by the bag. Others do so by the pound. Most are free of

Into the Mind of a

Giant By Christopher A. Pape

To be a professional football player takes skill, grit, determination and an unbridled love for the game - all of which Henry Hynoski, the starting fullback for the NY Giants, has in spades. Having grown up in small town Pennsylvania and making his way through high school and college, he was injured just as he was about to enter the NFL. Yet, Henry wouldn’t have it any other way – it gave him a drive and an awareness of what he wanted most – to play professionally. Now, a Super Bowl winning player, Mr. Hynoski (Hyno) is ready for more – ready to lead the Giants to more victories and ultimately another title. He sat down with us to discuss playing in this high-intensity city, how he overcame his injuries and what it takes to be a professional player. For his first full length interview, he was gracious, informed and a pleasure to speak to.

By Christopher A Pape As the editor-in-chief of a well-known Manhattan magazine, I am no stranger to receiving invitations that normal civilians may not be privileged. Recently, a Cessna and I just got back from a wonderful trip in Park City, Utah. But none of those can compare to the mind-boggling adventure I just experienced. In recognition of Air Force Week in NY – similar to Fleet Week - I was asked to witness a mid-air refueling mission for F-15s. Whisked away, to JFK, with 20 other media outlets, we all prepared ourselves for the journey of a lifetime. Not knowing what to expect, we arrived dewy-eyed at

Russia is an often misunderstood country on this side of the Atlantic. Some of the foremost associations with this nation are snow, space stations, and an outdated link to communism; the biggest country in the world is, and has long since been, so much more than that. The Firebird restaurant goes some way in conveying this, as perhaps the most authentic Russian restaurant outside of its motherland. The Firebird is a pre-revolution restaurant and is the culmination of a life-long dream of Baroness Irina von der Launitz, granddaughter of Vladimir von der Lauintz, the mayor of St. Petersburg until his assassination in 1907. The restaurant evokes a passion for Russian art, literature, and of course cuisine, with a dining-room decorated with china and crystal collectables and a book shelf of rare Russian books. In truth, here it feels more like a dinner party than a restaurant, and this should not be taken pejoratively as the grand staircase and domed ceiling give an almost overwhelming sense of opulence. Main courses are varied in choice and yet specialized in execution. The Chicken Kiev is a forte of Europe’s eastern stretches and this is no less true here, but if you’re looking for the very best and are willing to pay a price and Filet Duo is the standout choice. Firebird also has a valentines menu, which, admittedly, is roughly 7 months of the setting nonetheless; this is a restaurant for couples all year round. Perhaps one key association with Russia that I had overlooked in my previous list was vodka. Nobody does vodka like the Russians, and to leave this restaurant without trying their vodka would be a culinary and cultural sin. To complement your vodka, pair it up with caviar from their vodka and caviar pairing menu. Firebird restaurant provides yet another compelling reason for New York’s diverse restaurant scene and is well worth a visit.

LAST WORD Day 1 of No Call from Anna I’m not a needy guy. I live a quiet and peaceful life in the city – one could even say unassuming. I’m totally dedicated to my job – plugging away, creating engaging content on travel, dining, theater, arts, celebrity interviews, fashion and interior design. My hope is that our readers enjoy what we write about and use it for their But there is one thing that bugs me. For the most part, I try to ignore it; it lingers there as an open wound – unpleasant and occasionally painful. What is this unsightly gash you ask? It’s Anna Wintour’s refusal to acknowledge me; her inexplicable indifference to picking up the phone and calling. the public on decisions from where to wear.

the 51st most powerful woman in the world (it must hurt her that she isn’t in the Top 50), but so what? I’m pretty important too (or so the little voice in my head and my mother tell me).

To shine a light on this injustice, this slight on our beloved magazine, I’ve started a new column. We are going to shame her into it! Let’s see how long it takes her to do it. Any guesses? Any bets?

Anyway, Anna – take this as a call to action. Pick up the phone – ring me. Let’s chat, let’s do coffee. I’m sure we’d hit it off !

My plan is that every month, we’ll publish the amount of days Anna hasn’t contacted me – today is Day 1. Hopefully, she’ll get around to it. I mean, who does she think she is? Just because she has a staff of hundreds and I don’t – doesn’t make here any less of an arbitrator. I know, she just got ranked as
