elissa Francis of Fox Business Network fame is a beauty. Well, obviously she is more than just good looking, with a degree in economics from Harvard and an ultra-popular show on the aforementioned channel, she is a genius too! All this adds up to produce a woman that is stunningly elegant and impeccably graceful. It is no wonder than that Melissa Francis is smoking hot. Beauty and brains – she’s got it all.
When I first sat down with her, I knew I was in for a treat. With a spotless office and flashing an enticing smile, we got down to business. What follows is an interview, which is playful, insightful and was a delight to do. Melissa promises to write for our November edition and come to our big bash (I’m holding her to it). Resident (R): Tell me about the impetus of the book, how did it come about?

Melissa Francis (MF): I always wanted to be a writer, and I always tried to write and send it around. They liked my writing style but the story arc was not up to scratch, so with this in mind I asked people for advice and they helped me to correct that, so then it

Some people think it’s crazy here; it’s crazy for them but it’s perfect R: How is it to have kids in the city? MF: I love it because I feel like they have the opportunity to do so many things without driving a car; it just feels like we are all working together in this vibrant place. I often

our own opinions. We have a segment called ‘Disagree With Me’, which is the story of the day and I argue with someone who thinks the complete opposite to me, and that type of show now is why I love news versus acting.

MF: I really enjoyed it all, but when I got to college I decided to go somewhere far (Harvard) so I couldn’t put one foot in the business. I did an internship when I was in loved acting but it was always someone else’s words and thoughts, whereas in news we use
R: Do you do write for the show? MF: Most of the show isn’t written. We will attack them. We write the facts of the situation that we are discussing but then it becomes a dialogue between guest experts
and ourselves. I will ask my team to search for facts and write it all up, but that just arms us for our discussion. R: Do you get any interaction from the public? MF: Yes, Twitter blows up a lot and they tell us their thoughts. It’s a great indicator. R: What kind of audience is it? MF: At 5:00pm we get a nice cross section of people, who have come home from work, we people watching. R: What is your typical day like? MF: Busy! I get the kids dressed and ready meeting, then it’s the one o’clock show, and at 10:15am I meet for my later show. R: How do you secure guests? MF: industry so I have good contacts; we put out feelers to see who wants to come on. We decide early in the morning who we are going to reach out to according to stories. We look at our phones before we do anything in the morning.

There’s little doubt that New York City has, arguably, the best choice of top hotels in the world. By no means does this suggest that London, Paris, Bucharest has a paucity of upscale digs, but merely a statement of fact.
presents much the same dilemma. There’s no doubt that an argument could be made for any hotel left off the list but what we have here is simply a matter of personal opinion and choice as well as first hand knowledge.
When an editor suggests an article picking the five best hotels in New York, that’s somewhat akin to asking which of your children is your favorite. Any parent worth his or her salt would say that each one was on a par with the other.
Price and snob appeal are not necessarily indicators of quality. At the top of the list are comfort, amenities, location, location, location.
Picking great hotels in the Big Apple

All of that being said, following is a personal viewpoint of the best hotels in New York City: The Plaza Athenee must be considered at or near the top on any list. Opened in 1927 as the Hotel Alrae, the landmark building became the Plaza Athenee in 1987 and has undergone two multi-million dollar refurbishments since. No expense was spared in providing comfort for guests of the hotel favored by the late Princess Diana and the late actress Elizabeth Taylor during their New York forays. Located on quiet East 64 Street, a tree-lined residential neighborhood, the hotel is steps from both Park and Madison Avenues and within walking distance of Central Park, Museums, art galleries and some of New York’s best shopping. A hallmark of the hotel is the fact that both staff and guests are in for the long haul. There are employees who have been with Plaza Athenee, a member of The Leading Hotels of the World, since it opened and guests who return with regularity. Staff greets them by name and is cognizant of their personal preferences. Dutta, an Indonesian native, has worked here for 14 years as a bartender. Recognizing returning guests, he will frequently have their orders prepared before they have a chance to order. Attention to detail is obvious throughout the hotel. Comfort is immediately obvious in each guest room and suite. The daytime view across the city and Central Park is beautiful but cannot compare to the same at night as the city’s lights glisten below. A unique feature is the spa. Here at Plaza Athenee guests are treated to total privacy and comfort. Guests are afforded to a private suite where treatments are applied and they can relax in a separate sitting room.

St. Regis One of the iconic and storied hotels in the United States, the St. Regis has been voted the number one hotel in New York City and years by the Mobil Travel Guide. Sitting at the corner of Fifth Avenue and 55th Street since its ground breaking in 1902 by John Jacob Astor, the hotel began life in what was one of the city’s most elegant neighborhoods of the time. The neighborhood may have changed, but the St. Regis has lost none of its glamour and elegance. The moment you enter the lobby from under its Port Cochere you can feel the presence of the famous people who have been guests over the past 108 years since it was opened in 1904. Salvador Dali held court in the cocktail lounge on a near nightly basis. He is said to have stayed there with his wife and pet ocelot for nearly a decade and a half. Sisters Lorna Luft and Liza Minnelli were guests as were Ethel Merman, Dustin Hoffman, Princess Maria Beatrice of Savoy and the Apollo 14 astronauts. The Bloody Mary was invented by the hotel’s bar tender, Fernand Petiot, in 1934, beginning its popularity as the Red Snapper. Astor added innovations that were unheard of at the time. He had a system of airand a special design for disposal of dust and refuse, today known as a vacuum. Operated today by the Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, the St. Regis has lost none of its panache or dignity in a busy world.

Thimble Islands Ok here’s a place that I’m sure not too many a familiar with, the Thimble Islands. Located off the coast of Connecticut these archipelago islands are in the Long Island Sound. Take a specialty cruise, wine and cheese or sunset in the tranquil waters, from the town of Branford and in less than an hour you will have arrived. Breathe in the cool fresh sea air and enjoy these special islands that tell tales of long ago when pirates roamed the seas. The East End Rather do a seaside destination close to NYC? Eastern Long Island is the place to go. Baltimore and Chesapeake Bay How about a pet friendly destination? Well Baltimore, Maryland touts itself at being just that. Of course this isn’t what Baltimore is famous for. We all know about their Inner Harbor but have we taken the time to actually go there when after all we have our own South Street Seaport? Well I’m telling you it is well worth the effort. The seafood restaurants are some of the best on the east coast and while you’re there you can bring the kids over to the National
Aquarium. It’s great fun - they’ll love it. Maryland has much more to offer then Baltimore alone and if you are planning on going for a few days I highly recommend spending sometime in at least one of their state parks. Assateague is an island state park where you can see wild horses roaming on the sandy beaches and if you’re lucky watch them swim in the ocean over to a neighboring island. Calvert Cliffs is a kid friendly park featuring a recycled tire playground, freshwater and tidal marshlands and thirteen miles of hiking trails. The cliffs were once under water some 20 million
years ago and as a result one can see fossils of prehistoric species of sharks, whales and birds. It is thrilling for all to experience. Then there is Sandy Point State park along the Chesapeake Bay. Fishing and crabbing from the shoreline is permitted and the Symbi Trail offers hiking for the adventurers in your group where you will see an old plant and animal wildlife. New York holds a collection of grand architecture, most of which is standing out as it towers over the Manhattan skyline but, if you know where to look you can still discover secrets treasures for New Yorks past tucked away and holding on to a life that once was.
The Beaux-Arts Arts building of Ralph Lauren- Built in a style that was last fashionable in the early 1920’s, Ralph Lauren created a 22.000 square foot building that looks like it came from New York’s past. Directly across the street from the Gertrude Rhinelander Waldo mansion, the choice to build in this style was to keep with Lauren’s design philosophy, “timeless not trends.” The building has been featured in Architectural Digest which stated, “The project also presented an opportunity to retrieve the corner lot’s long-lost grandeur: From 1894 until 1951, when it was razed, a Federal Revival brick townhouse by Gilded Age tastemaker Stanford White occupied the wonderful site.”
The Mansion of Gertrude Rhinelander Waldo The Gothic Revival mansion on the corner of 72nd and Madison Ave is now home to the Ralph Lauren store, but the mansion has a mournful past. Built in 1898 for the heiress Gertrude Rhinelander Waldo, whose family connections date back to George the III, she
and Thompson to create a four-story mansion but she never moved in. Instead she choose to live with her sister across the street in a simple row house. The mansion was fully furnished at a cost of one million dollars, however, without occupancy full into converted into storefronts and the upper Ralph Lauren Acquired the mansion and it
T. Roosevelt Birthplace A recreated brownstone at 28 East 20th Street, between Broadway and Park Avenue South it was the childhood home of the 26th president. Torn down in 1916 the lot was then purchased buy the Women’s Roosevelt Memorial Association and the home rebuilt by noted female architect (the women’s suffrage movement at its height during this period) Theodate Pope Riddle in 1919. The house rededicated in 1919 holds many of its original furnishing donated by Roosevelt’s widow Edith and her sisters. The home is a national historic landmark and museum dedicated to the contributions of President Theodore Roosevelt.

The De Lamar Mansion Located at 36th and Madison Avenue and built in 1902 in the Beaux-Arts style it was the largest home in Murray Hill. It was the home of wealthy industrialist Joseph Raphael De Lamar. The home was built as a family residence for the De Lamar family. After De Lamar’s death in 1918, his daughter Alice sold the house, as she felt like living it was like living in a tomb. It passed through many the Polish Consulate.

Located on West 37th Street, the Strand Hotel exudes a sense of style and sophistication; and a winner in my book for anyone seeking a midtown hotel stay nearby to the Fashion District or Times Square.
Paying homage to the fashion district, the hotel’s lobby, small but stylish, is adorned with cool colors and artistic photographs pulled directly from the pages of fashion magazines, exuding an air of retro sophistication. The 177 rooms, small but clean, were well equipped with all the modern amenities including an iPod docking station and complimentary Wi-Fi. The bed linens were 100% Egyptian cotton sheets, bathrooms were clean and the showers small, but with the perfect water pressure (always important in my Their restaurant, The Strand Bistro, is open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner and offers a trendy take on American dishes under the direction of Executive Chef Kelvin Fernandez. Romantic, chic and very fashionable, the restaurant’s décor is quite eclectic, using iconic fashion images, bold colors and a beautiful aquarium to set its tone. Offering a seasonal menu inspired then moved onto the double cut pork chop with apricot chutney. This hard to come by and a its great spot to dine whether or not one is a guest of the hotel. The Strand Bistro also houses an extensive selection of wines and specialty cocktails. If you don’t want to sweat too much, biking is also a good choice for exploring the generous views that the mountains had to offer. I picked an easy trail to the Woody Creek. Because it was mainly downhill, I got to enjoy the speed and wind yet still catching all the beautiful sights of the creek, waterfall, mountains and residences. No matter it’s looking up to the sapphire sky or looking down the valley just steps off the trail, I rejoiced like a school kid. The adventure that I’m most proud of is paragliding. Although I hesitated, I was reassured that a seasoned pilot would be was that I was in a truck climbing up the bumpy hill. After spreading the glider on the ground and adjusting all cords, my pilot stood behind me and buckled my seats to his suit. Now the only thing we needed to do was wait for the wind. “Three-Two-One!” he shouted. We started running downhill and before I knew it, we were already in the air. If only words can express

complicated machine, just a helmet and two manual controls in each hand for pulling the cords, paragliding is truly an activity to reconnect with nature. Suddenly the world was clear. There was nothing in between the wilderness and me. For me, that moment of taking in all the breathtaking views while gliding above the valley was a life changing experience. The fear of falling from the sky was gone; instead, it was the ecstasy of being free and alive! After an active day, what could be more satisfying than a good meal? Restaurants in Aspen surely won’t let you down. To name a few, Cache Cache and Above the Salt are famous for their aesthetic courses in French and Italian style; Kenichi is loved for their innovative Japanese dishes. Their eel sushi wrapped with avocado and topped with a thin piece of strawberry was very impressive. The sour sweet juice of strawberry teased the taste buds while contrasting the texture slice. My favorite
restaurant was Brexie Brasserie, which is on dangling from the ceiling, Brexie serves guests with traditional French cuisine in an intimate ambience. The taste of their Boeuf Bourguignon was phenomenal. No complicated plating, just a simple hot stew onion, carrot and potato boiled till soft. Take in a spoonful of a little bit of everything with the warm soup and let yourself give in to the richness of it. It’s everything a traveler could ask for; it felt like home again. Besides food, Aspen is also a paradise of wine. Try wine tasting at IWM Cellars by Italian wine merchants. The servers were very knowledgeable and made good recommendations of how to pair up your wine with dishes. My favorite match is
Camembert with Chacra Pinot Noir from Argentina. The subtle nature of pinot paired with the creamy Camembert. As a mountain town with a highly developed commercial center, Aspen has everything for galleries, jewelry shops, boutique stores and

By Alexander Berki What was once considered uptown, Washington Square still holds many of its characteristics from the days when New York’s upper crust first began to build their modest, simple, but large, townhomes on its boarders. With the beginning of the industrial boom and the immigration populations growing everyday, the slums and rift raft of old New York’s downtown was swiftly moving uptown. To escape the crowded streets and those people who were considered to be, for a lack of a better term, “common,” society began to look for refuge in the uncharted wilderness above 14th Street. At the time few people lived above 14th street and the undeveloped land was then considered to be the country, consisting of mostly farmers. A change would come with the woman Edith Wharton believed had, “characteristic independents.” Mary Mason Jones, who was fictionalized as, “Old New York’s Dowager Empress, Catherine Manson Mingott,” in the “ The Age of Innocence,” was the first of her set to develop a fashionable home in the “inaccessible wilderness near the Central Park.” Known as Marble Row, Jones commissioned architect Robert Mook to erect an elaborate collection of adjoining houses in the French Renaissance style on an inherited plot of property along Fifth Avenue between 58th and 57th Streets. In Edith Wharton’s immortalization of Jones and her “Marble Row,” she wrote, “It was her habit to sit in a window of her sitting–room on the ground floor, as if watching calmly for life and fashion to flow northward to her solitary doors. She seemed in no hurry to have them come, for her patience was equaled by her confidence. She was sure that presently the hoardings, the quarries, the one–story saloons, the wooden green–houses in ragged gardens, and the rocks from which goats surveyed the scene, would vanish before the advance of residences as stately as her own—perhaps (for she was an impartial woman) even statelier; and that the cobble–stones over which the old clattering omnibuses bumped would be replaced by smooth asphalt, such as people reported having seen in Paris.”

Vanderbilt collaborated with Richard Morris Hunt and created the Petit Chateau at 660 5th Avenue, as the proper house of her branch of the Vanderbilt family. The home was built in the French Renaissance style and created an architectural frenzy. Because the Petite Chateau was seen as the great swan song of the great New York City mansions. It was well balanced, had the perfect blend of historical influence and decorative restraint. To open her house Alva threw a great ball in honor of her best friend Consuelo Yznaga, the Duchess of Manchester. The party was the most anticipated party of the day and the greatest social coup ever to take place in New York. In planning her great party Alva purposely did not invite Mrs. Astor, because of social customs Alva was not allowed to call on New York’s queen because she had not yet called on Alva. This forced Caroline into a wall. Because her daughter so wanted to attend the party Caroline Astor sent her footman to the Petit Chateau with her calling card. This small piece of paper that read nothing more than “Mrs. Astor” said that the Vanderbilt’s were now part of society. The erecting of the Petit Chateau was so successful that 5th Avenue in the East 50’s would come to be known as Vanderbilt Row.

A Man as Great In the mind of New Yorkers, there are few institutions that have as much gravitas and dignitas as WNET Channel 13. Even for this curmudgeon, I remember, with fondness, watching Sesame Street and Nature (which is actually produced by Channel 13). The station only brings fond memories. But the truth of the matter is that it had become staid - as up-to-date as a typewriter. That has all changed with the hiring of their new President and CEO, Neal Shapiro. With his many years at NBC he has brought a renewed sense of purpose; infusing this great institution with energy and passion. He sat down with us to talk business and the improvements he has ushered in.

I grew up in Albany and I dreamed of living in the city. When I used to read the New York Times as a kid I would see pages and pages on Broadway and even then I couldn’t wait to live here. R: How did you get into the business? NS:

People can donate money, or offer to be a volunteer chance to reach many, many people that they normally could not. R: Is there a new development for next year, a sneak peak? MGH: I don’t really have a favorite part to shoot in, I got a lot of inspiration from the park, but I can’t say I have a favorite.
MGH: No, not necessarily. We just had fun doing something that is beautiul.

Resident (R): What was the inspiration for the book? Margery Gray Harnick (MGH): I always take my own photographs and use them as a point of departure. After I got my Nikon camera I couldn’t stop shooting

SH: I’m originally from Chicago and when I graduated from Northwestern I contributed songs to the student revue. There was a disc jockey there called Dave Garroway. I met him and asked him if there was any chance of being a writer on his show. He said they were moving to New York and if there is any hope of being in entertainment then I MGH: I am from Sunnyside in Queens. At seven, I sang on a radio program at NBC then went onto CBS. Later, I got into the High School for Performing Arts and from that moment on my life has always been in the theater. It was only when I got married that I started doing TV work.

Sheldon Harnick (SH): We called our friend, Jane Lahr, she has a literary agency and thought the photos were wonderful. She was excited because the pictures were from New York and there was a market for that. So, I wrote poems with them, we hired a designer who did a great job.
R: What does it mean to be a New Yorker?
SH: We feel very privileged to be in New York. New York is full of culture and has these extraordinary museums, which are

Internationally celebrated artist Peter Stilton’s paintings and sculptures are in private and corporate collections all over the world. His varied painting style includes abstract, representational and impressionistic works. His canvases of Rolls-Royces, fanciful circuses with lions playing with beach balls, musical instruments hanging on trees, chairs

Maxine: Were you napping? P: Yes. When I’m painting, I cycle on and off. Once I’m into a painting, I never know much – going into it. So I’m constantly thinking of it, all absorbing. Every minute I’m working on it, every decision, for color, brush stroke – minutes go into hours. The ‘creative process’ – can’t be doing other things – I’m in another

M: How would you describe your process? P: In my poetry and my paintings I try to look into things and see a kind of basic matrix from which everything evolves. So, Rolls-Royces are like pipe organs. M: What was the ‘aha’ moment you decided to become an artist? P: I realized as a kid, you could paint yourself anything you didn’t have – houses, cars, anything. M: Did your parents support your creative endeavors?

Let’s Go Back to School With The Mom’s Code By Eileen Wacker
We are now in the throes of back to school. I can now see I will survive summer vacation, but fall is at our doorsteps and all the pressures of balancing work, school, marriage and health come back to life. I face so many challenges as a married mom of four, trying to build a company. I’m having dreams of back to school nights, sports and activity sign-ups and orientations, electronics policing, earlier enforced bedtimes, and getting up and on time. Then we get into our routine. We just never have a dramafree week. Forgotten meds, wrong shirt on school sports. It’s a constant game of cat and mouse. When my phone rings and certain numbers crop up, I’ll cringe but answer. Because I am a Mom. There are too many “little catches” I make that cannot be explained in an instruction letter. I am not a creature of habit – I am a “catcher” by habit. I catch everyone’s problems and stresses. I am the absorber of stress. And when I answer the phone, there is always an issue requiring immediate attention.
“The Mom’s Code” I’ve heard of a “man code” many times. Okay I get it, there are some unwritten rules that should be adhered to if you are a standup guy. I, for one, am a stressed-out working mom and I believe a “Mom’s code” could help us all. An important issue: working moms versus stay-at-home moms and could “the code” apply to both. I was a stay-at-home mom for 6 years. I left the work force when my oldest, at the time three and a half, needed open heart surgery. Then we ended up moving to Seoul, South Korea when we had four So I was a stay-at-home wife and mom and did not know if I would ever go back to the workforce. I was wildly busy trying to keep a sane life, living a foreign country. Now, back in the US for the past several years I have been trying to establish a business and I work non-stop as it is just getting off the ground. As a stay-at-home mom I wore a ponytail most days because I could squeeze in a rinse
off shower but blow-drying took too much time. And I was in better shape because I got to work out. Working moms really struggle with making enough time to work out so they are constantly trying to shed that extra few pounds. Stay-at-home moms have to shed a few pounds because we eat our kids’ food. Moms’ stress shows up as bitten and chipped up. I guess the bottom line is stay-at-home and working moms are stressed out and largely about the same things, so we can all agree to one code? To be a professional football player takes skill, grit, determination and an unbridled love for the game - all of which Henry Hynoski, the starting fullback for the NY Giants, has in spades. Having grown up in small town Pennsylvania and making his way through high school and college, he was injured just as he was about to enter the NFL. Yet, Henry wouldn’t have it any other way – it gave him a drive and an awareness of what he wanted most – to play professionally. Now, a Super Bowl winning player, Mr. Hynoski (Hyno) is ready for more – ready to lead the Giants to more victories and ultimately another title. He sat down with us to discuss playing in this high-intensity city, how he overcame his injuries and what it takes to be a professional player. Recently, a Cessna and I just got back from a wonderful trip in Park City, Utah. But none of those can compare to the mind-boggling adventure I just experienced. In recognition of Air Force Week in NY – similar to Fleet Week - I was asked to witness a mid-air refueling mission for F-15s. Whisked away, to JFK, with 20 other media outlets, we all prepared ourselves for the journey of a lifetime. Not knowing what to expect, we arrived dewy-eyed at

Russia is an often misunderstood country on this side of the Atlantic. Some of the foremost associations with this nation are snow, space stations, and an outdated link to communism; the biggest country in the world is, and has long since been, so much more than that. The Firebird restaurant goes some way in conveying this, as perhaps the most authentic Russian restaurant outside of its motherland. The Firebird is a pre-revolution restaurant and is the culmination of a life-long dream of Baroness Irina von der Launitz, granddaughter of Vladimir von der Lauintz, the mayor of St. Petersburg until his assassination in 1907. The restaurant evokes a passion for Russian art, literature, and of course cuisine, with a dining-room decorated with china and crystal collectables and a book shelf of rare Russian books. In truth, here it feels more like a dinner party than a restaurant, and this should not be taken pejoratively as the grand staircase and domed ceiling give an almost overwhelming sense of opulence. Main courses are varied in choice and yet specialized in execution. The Chicken Kiev is a forte of Europe’s eastern stretches and this is no less true here, but if you’re looking for the very best and are willing to pay a price and Filet Duo is the standout choice. Firebird also has a valentines menu, which, admittedly, is roughly 7 months of the setting nonetheless; this is a restaurant for couples all year round. Perhaps one key association with Russia that I had overlooked in my previous list was vodka. Nobody does vodka like the Russians, and to leave this restaurant without trying their vodka would be a culinary and cultural sin. To complement your vodka, pair it up with caviar from their vodka and caviar pairing menu. Firebird restaurant provides yet another compelling reason for New York’s diverse restaurant scene and is well worth a visit.
