This is not just another sober October. Here at Resident Magazine we are so excited and overthe-moon with joy for our upcoming 25th anniversary. Of course, that’s next month and you’ll see mentions of it in this edition. However, October is no slouch. From a scion of a billionaire family to Broadway actors to a morning anchor, we’ve got all of the famous New Yorkers that you demand. Eric Trump, the youngest of Donald and Ivana’s children, is our cover feature. Mr. Trump is highly successful, as the lead in the family’s golf course acquisitions; he has honed his business acumen to his charitable venture, the Eric Trump Foundation. He works extensively with St Jude’s Hospital and the foundation is the largest fundraiser for the hospital. In our interview, it was clear that he is extremely proud – as he rightly should be. Look out for an article written by Eric in November. Steve Lacy of Good Day Wake Up is also featured. Mr. Lacy is a gregarious and playful host. We sat down to discuss his recent move to New York, how he has adjusted to no longer being a Bostonian and how he broke into the business. As with Eric, we had our own photo shoot – I’d say it was pretty successful. Ladies, he’s available, so you had better go after him while he’s still single! Look out for an article written by Steve in November. Taylor Louderman, who reminds me of a young Judy Garland, graces our pages. Vivacious, full of energy and beyond talented, Ms. Louderman was a pleasure to interview. There is an accompanying review of the musical she stars in, Bring It On. I wish her the best of luck in all of her endeavors, but I have a feeling she doesn’t need my luck. Sharon Dastur, program director of Z 100, was kind enough to take time out of her busy schedule and speak with us. Not only is she beautiful, but she is also vastly knowledgeable about much as I did. My assistant, Narbeh, interviewed Chris Bohjalian, a New York Times Best Selling Author. Both of Armenian descent, Mr. Bohajalian is one of Narbeh’s idols and it comes through in the piece. We are glad to feature him and if he’s good enough for Oprah (his books have landed on Oprah’s Book Club list), he’s good enough for us. Rounding out our barrage of celebrities is Doug Hodge. Having recently come off his successful stint in La Cage aux Folles, Mr. Hodge, a native the United Kingdom, has returned as Cyrano in Cyrano de Bergerac. I was honored to interview Doug and he was extremely quotable. Look out for an article written by Doug in November. We celebrate travel in our Fall Around the World edition, we are proud to present only the best. From cruise lines to exotic locales, we are on the trail of the haute and the special. There are few, if any, names that invoke the city of New York like the Trump name. Clearly, the Trump family are the masters of branding and whatever one’s feelings of them are one must admit that their contribution may still be in charge, his children – the ones with Ivana – are playing an ever increasing role.
The youngest of those three, Eric, is leading the charge with golf and hotel acquisitions. He recently sat down with what it means to be a Trump and a New Yorker, what he does exactly, his work with his charity - the Eric Trump Foundation which focuses its work on children, his appearances on Celebrity Apprentice and everything in between.
As you would expect with a Trump, he was forthright and sincere and it was clear that he has a passion for his father, family and work. It was a pleasure interviewing him – we even had our own photo shoot with the help of Getty Images – I hope you like the piece as much as I liked interviewing him.

Resident (R): Thank you for sitting down with us. Eric Trump (ET): It’s my pleasure, you have a great magazine. R: Obviously, you’re a Trump. What does it mean to be a member of that family? ET: It means I have a lot of responsibility on so many different fronts. I was very fortunate to be born into a great family and I recognize that. My grandfather was a developer and was incredibly successful. My father has obviously done amazingly well and has clearly become the “King of New York.” But what we, as a family, have done with the Trump brand outside of the United States is nothing short of exceptional. This has created an incredibly strong foundation. We believe in family businesses. I always like to say that we’re the “biggest mom and pop” in the world. It’s very special to enjoy the company’s assets on the weekend with one another when your livelihood is spent turning them into something very special. To have eight eyes looking at each detail of every single property is a huge advantage and is what makes a family business all the more meaningful and effective. So, what does it mean to be a Trump? Certainly, you carry that responsibility as the next generation. There is, of course, a

philanthropic element, as well – “to whom much is given much is expected.” We all take that aspect very seriously and prioritize philanthropy in our lives. R: Were you expected to be a part of the business? ET: No. My father has always said that if you don’t love what you do, don’t do it. For a couple of reasons – life’s too short to be miserable each day and if you don’t love it, you’ll never be good at it. He’d always reinforce that point. Ultimately, his greatest wish has come true – having all of us actively working in the business alongside him. He loves to call me at 6am to talk about an asset or acquisition, while also being able to interact with his son. I value these calls, as well, because he is an amazing mentor. But if we weren’t good at what we do, or if we didn’t love it, I think he’d ask us to pursue other interests. At the end of the day, we’re a very big business; we have tens of thousands of employees and a lot rides on the decisions we make. Therefore, like any other employee, we will be held accountable – family only goes so far. R: What exactly do you do for the company? ET: I do a lot of the company’s acquisitions, particularly those that fall under the auspices of our golf company. We have expanded
four courses to 13. We now have courses both domestically and internationally. We’ve also grown the hotel business tremendously and I spend a lot of time working on our properties in Las Vegas, Chicago, Panama and Doral, among others. All of these assets are award winning and I’m proud of all of our accomplishments. I also run one of our newest acquisitions, Trump Winery, Charlottesville, VA. An incredibly stunning piece of land – over 900 acres - that produces award-winning wine. R: I understand that you grew up in New York? ET: I did. I attended The Hill School, a boarding school in Pottstown, PA, and Georgetown University in Washington, DC, but eventually made my way back to New York. R: What does it mean to be a New Yorker? ET: Today, there is no family that’s more synonymous with New York than the Trumps. My father lives and breathes the city. My grandfather did such amazing work in Brooklyn and Queens, building 27,000 middle income units – they were formidable and fantastic buildings. Eventually, my father moved the business into Manhattan and, as we all know, built some of the tallest
and most luxurious skyscrapers anywhere in the world. When people say Donald Trump’s name, the word “New York” never fails to follow closely behind. We are so engrained with the city – whether it be from Wollman Rink to Trump Soho – we love this city. It’s who we are. It’s where we call home. We cannot imagine being anywhere else in the world. Even the building we’re sitting in right now, Trump Tower, on 57th and 5th, is arguably on the most prestigious corner anywhere in the world and we wouldn’t want it any other way. New York is an incredible place with incredible people working for incredible businesses. R: What do you do for fun in the city? How do you utilize the city? ET: From the time I wake up – I run Central Park every morning - to the evenings spent dining in local restaurants - I use every facet of NYC. Moreover, as you can imagine, we also spend a tremendous amount of time in the greater NYC airports coming to/from our various projects. But, at the end of the day, it’s always great to be home. R: Favorite restaurants? ET: There is no shortage of great restaurants in NYC. But what I’ve noticed is that I tend People get to know you; you feel comfortable
there – you can walk in without a reservation. I love the steakhouse, Quality Meats on 58th & 6th. I’m friends with Todd English and he is doing a great job at the Plaza. Rue 57 is another favorite. We also love Trump Grill and eat there all the time. Fresco by Scotto is fantastic. R: Rosanna was on our cover in February. ET: Really? She’s a great person. My whole family loves her. R: I’ve got to ask you about Celebrity Apprentice – how is it like? ET: Out of all the Trumps, I am probably the one who shuns the spotlight the most. But even though that’s the case, The Celebrity Apprentice has been incredibly fun and you quickly recognize the power of television. Not only do I garner thousands of new Twitter followers every season which is great for our brand, the show has reignited and launched so many careers: Joan Rivers, Piers Morgan, Arsenio Hall, to name a few. Notwithstanding, we’ve all been fortunate to make a lot of great friends from the show and it’s been very good for business. Above all, the amount of money that the show has single-handedly raised for charity over the years is staggering – tens of millions of dollars. While the focus will always be on the madness generated by our celebrity cast, my father deserves a lot of recognition for the fact that it’s the most philanthropic show
in the history of television and has made life changing contributions to countless charities. R: Let’s turn our gaze in another direction – tell us about your charity. ET: Six years ago, my friends and I got together and decided to do something for children. We focused on children battling life-threatening diseases. We spent a year traveling the country and visiting all of the major hospitals in an effort to identify one that through the doors of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, the experience was like “night and day.” They are by far the best in the world at what golf outing and raised $275,000. Six years later, the same golf outing raises north of $2 million dollars annually. We’ve grown into the largest private golf outing in the country and have quickly become St. Jude’s single largest event and fundraiser. A
ny grand adventure in The Last Frontier involves plenty of time soaking up the stunning scenery and scoping out the resident wildlife. This epic trip had all of that, and then some.
I’ve been moose-hunting for the past decade. And I don’t mean the Sarah Palin kind of hunting; I don’t want to bring one home for dinner, all I want to do is simply spot a moose in the wild - from a safe distance - and snap some pictures. The obsession started in 2002 when I thought I had found one at the Grand Canyon. It was massive and nearly as tall as my family’s minivan. Turns out it was an elk. Moose like cooler temps so they don’t travel that far south. In 2010, I tried to track one down in Quebec, and again in 2011. But, alas, I have never come face to furry face with the ever elusive moose.

acre UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s seriously surreal. I’m talking 15,000-foot mountains that rise straight out of coastlines and icy fjords. The trail, covered in neon green moss, shaded by increasingly more gorgeous by the minute. We traipsed under brilliant tree canopies, across a squishy shoreline looked like they’d been strategically arranged. We headed back to the boat all smiles. That is, until we overheard the other group. They had come within yards of a female moose crossing the road. Seriously? My heart sank, if only we had stayed with the group, my search would have been over. Looking on the bright side, though, what I really wanted to see was not a female moose but a bull moose, weighing in at 1,200 pounds with massive antlers atop his mighty skull.

The next day we awoke to an announcement from the bridge, which sent us scrambling to the bow to see two small blobs roaming around the shoreline. A closer look with binoculars revealed two brown bears. Better yet, we were about to go kayaking in that area. And sure enough, once we got there, one bear was still around. We sat silently in our kayaks and stared from just 50 feet away. Nearly every day of the trip was equally spectacular. We came across sea otters, bald eagles galore, blond bears and pods of humpbacks. And not just Our last day took us into Endicott Arm. As we hopped into the zodiac, a ship hand said, “This is one of my favorite places on the planet.” I soon saw what she meant when we arrived at the cliff-walled fjords towering a thousand feet above. Alaska has more designated Wilderness Areas than any state in the nation and our next stop: Ford’s Terror — a pristine tidal inlet and fjord — is one of them. There, we spotted sea lion after sea lion, some lounging on icebergs, others just popping their heads above the surface occasionally. And, as if that wasn’t amazing enough, we were surrounded by rugged icecovered mountains gleaming high overhead and a glacier that actively calved all and we headed back to the ship. The next morning we hugged all the crew members and sadly waved goodbye. The epic cruise had come to an end, but the land tour was just beginning.

As its proximity and great accessibility to the Caribbean may suggest, Venezuela is rich in natural beauty. The focal point to this claim and perhaps main attraction of the country is the one and only Salto Angel Falls. We New Yorkers may believe ourselves to have fairly well-trained necks when it comes to looking up to tall buildings, but even we will have to crane ourselves that little extra bit to see this awesome waterfall in all its glory. Nearly 3,000 feet high, Salto Angel is twice the height of the Empire State Building. It is comfortably the largest waterfall in the world, and helicopter services are offered to view this natural phenomenon as only the birds and the privileged can. Just be sure to go on a cloudless day.

Mérida is perhaps unlike most places you have visited. It is found at the foot of the Andes and is just less than 10 miles from Venezuela’s highest point. Driving here by car will offer you some special views of the mountains and valleys as you will be almost two and a half miles above sea level. Mérida is also the center for outdoor activities in Venezuela. One of the greatest reasons for this is the amazing Teleférico, the world’s longest and highest cable car. This will lead you on a journey across stunning scenery the Pico Espejo, from which many choose to descend on top of mules or by hiking. Be sure to take some layered clothing with you, however, as the top is often covered by clouds.
Arguably, such natural beauty would not be complete without a varied wildlife, and Venezuela certainly checks off this box. Los Llanos is undoubtedly the best spot to catch a glimpse as this is where you will see some amazing wildlife, including anacondas, the abundant capybaras and caimans, bird species that number in their hundreds, and the much rarer jaguars and anteaters. This is also the last stronghold of the Orinoco Crocodile. If you’re after marine life, then Los Roques is where you want to be. This is a chain of islands and coral reefs in the Caribbean Sea. It’s also the ideal spot for scuba diving! Strangely enough, travelers, largely overlook Caracas, Venezuela’s capital city. Nonetheless, Caracas is worth a visit.
Even in the nation’s capital, stunning landscape is hard to miss. As you land, your immediate attention is drawn to the Caracas valley –which can be seen from your plane window—with the northern mountains in the background. The city itself is home to some excellent art, as can be seen in the Museo de Arte Colonial. Caracas also has a bustling nightlife, and locals tend to party such nightlife are the Las Mercedes and La Castellana regions. The capital’s forté, however, must surely be its gastronomy. Caracas offers a diverse range of restaurants, but it would be a shame not to try out the native specialties in one of the many Venezuelan restaurants. Seasoned and neophyte cruisers alike jumped right into line dances to live DJ music. We, on the other hand, jumped right into one of the saltwater-swimming pools and got in a few laps. The saktwater was refreshing and natural and we swear by it - it's much better for the body than chlorine.
Universal Fun When we arrived in Port Canerval, we headed to Orlando for Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure. The Simpsons ride is a simulated roller coaster with colorful characters and scenery. The Popeye attraction was also fun. Spoiler alert: One passes under buckets of water. In the laundry room, we observed machines that automatically press and fold sheets and towels. Best of all was the private tour of the bridge, the captain’s area. Captain Roger Gustavsen showed us all of the navigational instruments and the steering wheel.

Maine is home to Acadia National Park where you can camp out and luxuriate in its serenity. A Voice So International Yet So American By Christopher A. Pape Any of you who read the summer editions of our fair magazine will remember an interview with Anna Bergman, who made promises of a return to performing in New York. Lo and behold, the internationally recognised and acclaimed Feinstein’s at Loews Regency this month. On October 15, & the Night & the Music: An Evening of Musical Imports & Exports’, which will also feature musical director and arranger Alex Rybeck and Jered Egan on bass- all directed by Jeff Harnar. The performance has a carefully presented theme, which is described most aptly by the title itself. There are two aspects to this title: while on the one hand it is simply an evening of you with the music, which is a traditional concept; on the other hand it is a night of imports and exports, that is to say it is an evening of both foreign and home-grown music, which is arguably anything but a traditional idea. It is a well known fact that print journalists are jealous of on-air reporters and so it is the case with Steve Lacy and me. As the anchor of Good Day Wake Up, he reaches millions of New Yorkers, informing them of â&#x20AC;&#x201C; I do not. Nonetheless, I respect Mr. Lacy for his valued contributions to Fox 5 and New York as a whole. In just the space of a year, he has engrained himself into the hearts and minds of many and for that we are thankful. So it was an honor when he agreed to sit down and be interviewed. Ladies, heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a real catch and I hope you like the interview as much as I enjoyed interviewing him.

Resident (R): We’re big fans of you here and you were so good to us when Rosanna and Julie were featured. Steve Lacy (SL): I do what I can and thank you for this opportunity. R: So you’re originally from the Boston area – since we’re rival cities how is it to work in New York and how long have you been here? SL: took some time getting used to. Everything you’ve been raised to think – everything is up, is suddenly down and vice versa. The Super Bowl was certainly a challenge. The Boston-New York rivalry is a question that I’m constantly asked about – they want to know if I’m a Yankees fan now. My response is, of course not. You’re from where you’re from. loves being in New York as much as I do. I always ask the reverse: if you grew up in New York and moved to Boston, would you become a Red Sox fan? The answer is always no. So why would you expect anything different from me? Being a New Yorker means being authentic and to change your lifelong loyalties is completely opposite of what it means be a New Yorker. R: I’m glad you brought that up – what does it mean to be a New Yorker? SL: Being a New Yorker is about who you want to be; living the way you’d like to live. It’s about pursuing hobbies or things that interest in New York. It’s expensive; you’ve got to work for it. That’s what makes it the best place in the world, because everyone you run into, who lives here is, in some way, struggling to make it happen. I think that’s what binds New Yorkers together. There’s this idea that New Yorkers are cold and distant. But the truth of the matter is that the people here are as great as you’ll meet anywhere else. For example, if you ask for directions or a recommendation, everybody is willing to help you out and send you in the right direction. R: So I want to know – how did you get rid of that strong Bostonian accent? SL: I grew up an hour outside of Boston, in a town that has the craziest Mass accent that you’ve ever heard. For example, Martha’s Vineyard is the hardest thing for me to say. I want to always pronounce it without the ‘r’ like I’m a Kennedy. My accent has turrets – it sneaks out from time to time and then I think – I wish I could get that word back.

I went to Boston College and in my freshman year, I would be the guy that students from California would grab and ask to hear me speak; I had the strongest accent on campus. I went to BC with the attitude that I was in my home city; I wasn’t going to change. But after a month or two, I made an effort to tone it down – to try to say the letter ‘r’. R: Turning to your career, how did you get into broadcast journalism? SL: I always aspired to be a broadcast journalist – particularly growing up in the eighties – when you only had three television stations – it seemed like such an exciting job, mixed with my interest with what was going on in the news - I think a lot of people my age had the same idea. I studied marketing in college and when I graduated I got a sales job for a year and I hated it; I wasn’t supposed to be doing this. Through was able to get a part-time job, behind the scenes. I parlayed that into a full-time job working at an evening news magazine. While I was there, I begged the cameramen to do some stand-ups with me, packaged it all together and sent it off to a lot of stations. Finally, in November of up the food chain. After a year and a half there, I became the anchor and then to here. R: What exactly do you do at Fox 5? SL: studio. That changes depending on the day. R: SL: I’m a big advocate of napping. I’ll take a nap in the afternoon; last night was a perfect example. The Democratic Convention was on, as well as, the Giants game. It was one of those nights that, realistically, that I would be up later than I normally would. So when I got home in the afternoon, I took a nap to hold me over and then I went to bed a I typically go to bed between eight and nine. R: Who has been your favorite guest? SL: As someone who is totally into eighties rock music, meeting Duff ever happened to me. They let me do it during the nine o’clock hour, which was great. He was totally awesome and a great guy. I couldn’t imagine anything better than this. When you meet someone you look up to, and they’re actually as great as you thought they were – that’s an

With song titles like Better Mad than Sad, Daddy’s a Douchebag, Holiday’s Suck, If Only You Were Gay and a Bitter Pill, Divorce the Musical is a hilarious new production at the Triad Theater and brainchild of Ruthe Ponturo, who wrote the lyrics. Ms. Ponturo, the recent ex-wife of Tony Ponturo, who produced Lombardi, a play with a successful run on Broadway, experience – she wanted to give a broader experience of what it meant to women – they are indicative of the sentiment most women feel when going through this painful experience. According to the creator, the show is supposed to uplift rather than make a woman sad, “Instead of wallowing in self pity, tempting as it is, get mad rather than sad.” Because we are a monthly magazine and all of the performances are scheduled in the middle of October, effectively preventing us from reporting on it, I was granted a behind the scenes experience. Invited to her tony Upper East Side duplex (referenced in a song), Ruthe and her composer, John Tomas Fisher, provided a sneak peek of some of the tunes. Ruthe has over thirty years of experience on the stage; it t is no wonder that from start to While some of the music is risqué and not appropriate for children, it is nonetheless clever and funny. Both Ms. Ponturo and Mr. Fisher mix musical genres to great effect. Even after only a few bars, I was humming away. It doesn’t hurt that Ruthe has a beautiful voice with a wide range and large capacity. Divorce - The Musical will deliver eight showcase performances beginning on September 28, 2012 at the Triad Theater in New York City at 158 West 72nd Street. BRIT ON BROADWAY “Life’s like a play: it’s not the length, but the excellence of the acting that matters.” So said Seneca and what a perfect quote to describe Mr. Doug Hodge’s career. A consummate English director and actor, Mr. Hodge is making a triumphant return to Broadway in his turn as Cyrano in Cyrano de Bergerac at the Roundabout Theater. Having won a Tony award for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in his role as Albin in the musical, La Cage aux Folles, he is no stranger to the New York stage. Mr. Hodge sat down with us to discuss his new role, the differences between the English and American stage and his overall impression of our city. The whole time he was witty, sincere and extremely quotable. I hope you enjoy the interview as much as I liked speaking with him.

Roxane, his love interest, falls in love with a good looking young man who can’t speak well and Cyrano writes the words and prompts him – feeds him all the best lines – so that he gets the opportunity to speak to the girl that he truly loves. It’s a fantastic romance and beautiful story. The play has been done many different versions, all sorts of different places and ways. Our play is a new translation by Ranjit Bolt; it’s very modern and it’s all in rhyming couplets.
Dough Hodge (DH): Yours as well!
DH: I love it! I even love the Brooklyn accent.
DH: Maybe more like a Birmingham accent. R: time on Broadway?
DH: Cyrano is the story of a man with an enormous nose who falls in love with the best

DH: I have to say – I’d like to be one. I’ve thought very seriously about coming here to live. I think New York is safer than London; if I’m honest I think people are happier here. There is a certain generousness and gregariousness that isn’t present in London. When I was here last time, my twelve year old boy was with me and I happily let him walk home from school by himself and feel safe about it. Of course, New York is thrilling and exciting, but there is also a sense of community that is pervasive. Relative to London, New York is cleaner, safer and happier.
R: It’s as bad as a Cornish accent.
R: Tell us about the role – obviously it’s Cyrano, but are you putting a different spin on it?
DH: There are various kinds of oldfashioned noses. Cyrano was a real person with an unsightly nose – there are drawings of him and there are many versions of the nose. Kevin Kline had a sort of Pinocchio nose. Steve Martin had something similar. But the real story is about someone with a

R: Oh no! It’s too New York – I’m sorry. How do you put up with a New York accent?

R: And the nose?
A guy named Gary Bower designed the nose in England and then I had the hilarious time taking all of these prosthetic noses through customs at JFK, which all looked slightly obscene. So, now here I am ready to glue these things onto me each night.
Resident (R): What a wonderful accent you have!
DH: I was here two years ago and won a Tony for my performance in La Cage aux Folles. I was here for a year and it was my debut on Broadway. I’ve been to New York on holiday, but I came for La Gage for six months – the show was a success and I enjoyed myself, so I decided to stay longer. I’ve always been
agreed to produce it. So here I am with an All-American cast, an English director and myself.
R: Lastly, what is the difference between English and American theater? R: How did you get the part? DH: When I was doing La Cage, the Roundabout approached me and asked me what other show I would be interested in doing. At the time, I was directing in England, as much as I had been acting, and so I told them I’d love to come back and act in something. I knew that I didn’t want to come back to direct – it had to be acting. And I said Cyrano – it’s the only play that I
DH: There are many differences. Certainly, the American audience is more vocal in its appreciation and as actors, we are much more aware of that encouragement. Americans look after theater and take care of it in a way that the English don’t. I won an Olivier Award in England and they aren’t televised and almost not mentioned in the press. Yet, the equivalent here, the Tony Award, is a huge event. I really like that sense

I’ve been told by my grandmother a million times that when she saw Barbra Streisand perform in Funny Girl she knew that Barbra would be a star. Recently, I had that same sensation when I was privileged enough to see a performance of Bring It On, the new musical, starring Taylor Louderman. Like Judy Garland, Ms. Louderman is from a small Midwestern town and has a voice that is as smooth as gold. It is no small thing for me to suggest that Ms. Louderman is the next Garland. For me, Judy was the epitome of what it meant to be an American legend; I have seen many young talents come and go – only to fade way like a summer breeze. Yet, there is something about Taylor that resonates with me. Perhaps it’s just her bubbly personality; I suspect it’s more than that. Sitting in the theater waiting for the musical to commence, my friend and I were both concerned over the ‘schmaltz’ factor of the production. Was this going to be worth our time? Well, we couldn’t have been more wrong. Taylor stole the show with her clear voice and precise acting and we loved the interplay of her with the whole cast. I was honored to sit down with her; I picked her brain about her recent move to New York, the difference between Broadway and regional theater and what her future goals may entail. The whole time she was gracious and authentic. I hope you like the piece as much as I liked interviewing her.

Resident (R): I just saw the show last night. You’re extremely talented and I was enthralled. Taylor Louderman (TL): How kind of you! Thank you so much. R: You’re from Missouri and just moved to the city in August. How have you acclimated? TL:
R: What part of the city do you live in? TL: in Queens. R: I used to live there. TL: Really? It’s so beautiful there. It’s a newly revitalized area; I live right by the Pepsi Cola sign! TL: Do you have a good view of Manhattan? R: I do! It’s nice to step away from the show and come home – be able to see the city in the distance. It’s very cool. R: I’m glad you brought up the show. Tell back story. TL: I grew up in a small town in Missouri where the cattle population exceeds the

R: extreme physicality – how do you cope with that? TL: I sleep so much. I really have to limit especially when I’m in Manhattan. The whole cast takes care of their bodies. We all get together 30 minutes before the curtain rises. We’ll warm up our voices and bodies. It’s a big task and we really have to be the guys underneath us will never let us fall. I feel completely safe. R: did you identify with her? TL: I think I’m so much like her and the show has developed to be more like I am.

I certainly did when I had to change schools. So I can totally relate to my character’s emotions.
TL: It’s very different. The theaters are often much larger when on tour and less intimate. realistic feeling because the audience is much closer to the stage and right there with you. I like being on a Broadway stage much more; I can relate with the audience – I get a stronger connection with their emotions; how they are feeling. The lifestyle between touring and Broadway is completely different – it makes it feel like I’m doing a completely different show.
R: or will you become a Broadway Diva? TL: That’s a good question. I will go back when the time is right. I certainly want to ride this wave and get out of it what I can. I love it and I’m learning a lot – which I think

There are many shining stars among the talented supporting players. Among them are Kate Rockwell, a knockout as Campbell’s ditsy, self absorbed frenemy on The Truman High cheerleading squad and Elle McLemore who is pitch perfect as the jealous, rival mean girl whom Campbell mentors before being suddenly transferred to the tough and rough Jackson High.

My whole life is passing before my eyes. Am I dying? No, I’m just looking at the lineup for the new theater season. “Cyrano” and “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf.” Weren’t these done here recently? Yes, but to be fair, there are a number of new shows on the boards. Anyway, who could get tired of these classics? adaptation of Cyrano de Bergerac that was amusing, but lacked the vein of feeling in Rostand’s play. That’s why the French movie with Gerard Depardieu was better and so were the stage versions with Derek Jacoby and Kevin Kline, both of whom were superb. The last time Douglas Hodge was on stage in New York, he won a Tony award for his dazzling turn as Albin in “La Cage aux Folles.” Now, as Cyrano, he will be crossing swords instead of crossdressing. Playing Roxanne shouldn’t be much of a stretch for Clémence Poésy since she’s French and beautiful. She also has no problem acting in English, as evidenced by her work in the last two Harry Potter movies and “Gossip Girl.” That “Grace” is a dark comedy shouldn’t come as a surprise since it was written by Craig Wright (“Six Feet Under”). The work stars Paul Rudd, Michael Shannon, Kate Arrington and Ed Asner. In the course of the play, a young couple plans to open a chain of Gospel-themed motels, but their lives are thrown into chaos when they
Now, she is slated to star in Rodgers & Hammerstein’s “Cinderella.” She is no stranger to their music, having performed as “Pipe Dream” for Encores! and a concert of “The Sound Of Music” at Carnegie Hall. Coincidentally, her delightful new album, “Dream A Little Dream – Live At The Café Carlyle” is being released this month. The album features guest appearances by Jeremy Jordan (who played Clyde to her Bonnie), Tom Wopat and her husband, Nathan Johnson. The album consists of songs culled from Broadway, the Great American Songbook, as well as from the worlds of jazz and folk. There is even a number from “Cinderella.”

You may have heard Neil Cowley playing keyboards on Adele’s “19” and “21” albums, but his work with his own groups is quite different. “Face of Mount Molehill” presents his own compositions in rather brief takes. The core group is Cowley on piano, Rex Horan on bass and Evan Jenkins on drums. section. My guess is that most of it was planned out by Cowley in advance with little improvisation. That said, his music is highly appealing, ranging from the lyrical (e.g., Lament and Distance by Clockwork) to the rowdy (Rooster was a Witness), with some eccentric touches, such as his daughter’s laughter on “Mini ha ha.” (The title is probably a playful reference to Minnehaha, the wife of Hiawatha in Longfellow’s poem.) On Oct. 11th, Neil Cowley will play music from the album at I once noted that when alto saxophonist David Sanborn came on stage as a guest artist, the soul level rose. The opening “Perfected Surfaces,” has a funky beat, over which Bixler and Wendholdt weave their lines in and out of each other. “Vanishing Point” has a lovely melody that almost calls out for words while “Vida solo. This is the new CD by the powerful singer Elina Duni with Colin Vallon on piano, Patrice Moret on bass and Norbert Pfammatter on drums. The songs are Albanian and the lyrics (which are translated on the liner notes) are often poetic. The subject matter ranges from songs of love (both good “For a Year” and bad “Me and You) to nostalgia (“When You Remember”) to stark depictions of war (“Celo Mezani,” about a slain hero). I have four kids aged fourteen, fourteen, ten and nine years oldwho attend two different school campuses, and, I have a demanding job. My husband also has a demanding job, and since his “demanding” is bigger than mine, I man the front lines with help from“Kelli.”We approach the fall with sweet anticipation. Finally, the allure of “a back to school routine” is here. We just got through summer camps, family visits and vacations or stay-cations. By the dreamt about driving my minivan to the curb, coming to an almost halt and pushing the kids out, saying, “have the best day ever!” Of course they have perfectly packed backpacks, sunscreen, weather appropriate clothing, the right clothes and shoes for sports, the right piano books, an organic home lunch and agreed meeting spots for ‘after school’ to make sure the pick-up runs smoothly. My kids have updated themselves with the new electronic policies at school so they never break a rule. away will get on the bus he is supposed to in the morning. He will also get on the right bus to the pool to try out for water polo and actually make the team. Then I wake up. The alarm is buzzing, screeching through my senses. I look over. Six oh one. I get up, brush my teeth and wander upstairs. My oldest is already up as she wants to straighten her hair. The other three reluctantly get up and make their way to the kitchen. No one feels like eating but I insist. I become the mommy food pusher. I hear myself saying, “You need a full drink or you will get dehydrated. If you don’t eat anything, you’ll get a head ache.” I can’t stop myself and prattle on at them. They have future coffee drinker written all over them. They dress in clothes I wouldn’t choose. But they have eaten a little and sunscreen their faces. We get in the minivan. We drop our son at his bus stop as he travels across town. Then I head into town to my other kids’ school. My phone rings and my daughter answers it as I am driving and trying to set a reasonably good example. My son wants to try out for water polo as his friend will play. Can I buy him some jammers and meet him at the pool in town after school?He also left his home lunch in the minivan.

When I grew up in London, England, from a young age, my mum would give me 50p to go to the corner shop and I could purchase comic books, candy and soda for myself. I only got my pocket money if I was (generally) well-behaved and did my chores. Sometimes aunts and uncles would also give me money for birthdays and other monumental events. My ability to spend the money was limited by my environment – just a couple of shops I could go to. There was no Internet.

“ Mo m H om ewo rk” By Margaret Hyde My children are back in school, which means I am once again juggling everyone’s schedule and making sure that all the homework gets done. Each year my children come home at the beginning of school with homework that they are very excited to hand off to me. With at huge grin they say, “Mom, this is Mom homework.” It invariably reads something like “Please help us get to know your son or daughter by answering the following questions: Describe your child in three sentences. What are his/her strengths academically? Socially? What would you like him/her to work on and learn this year?” A couple of years ago when presented with this list of questions again, I decided to apply it to myself. Who am I? What
are my strengths and weaknesses? What would I like to work on and learn this year? I realized that back to school could be a great time for me to evaluate my own growth and set goals that were possible to accomplish in the span of my children’s school year. I have noticed that every year the way I describe myself evolves and this mom self-evaluation homework has really enabled me to grow and learn in ways I would never have expected. One year I decided to learn to surf and I am successful endeavor, I still struggle and my kids still think my Spanglish is funny. One mom homework session led me to the need to be of service in a more hands on way, so I got involved with WriteGirl, a creative writing mentorship program. I have gotten to work with amazingly talented teen girls who have inspired me and helped me improve my writing as much as I have helped them. Last year, I decided to work
on being more assertive with the help of Muay Thai punches and kicks and it helped loose the last of my baby weight. So this year, who am I and what do I want to learn and where in my life do I want to grow? With a very busy toddler and middle school and high school age sons, I think that my personal challenge is balance. I want to try to achieve more balance in my life through better nutrition and calming relaxation techniques like meditation. I will be Oming and eating kale all the way through this school year. What goals, both personally and professionally, will you be working on in this new school year? Try doing the mom homework above and choosing one thing you will work on for yourself this year. Family Friendly Farms In New York City By Bob and Sandy Nesoff Wall Street today is the center of world commerce where the fertilizer of commodity trading as well as the harvesting of stocks and bonds is a daily happenstance. But close your eyes and picture it as it was some 300 to 400 years ago…an agrarian society with farms stretching across what would become known as Manhattan Island. Today New York in general and Manhattan in particular, are famous the world over for Times Square, the hustle and bustle of Broadway and the giant buildings lining what for the indigenous people. It would appear that concrete is the only crop being grown there today. Wrong! What began as the Union Square Green Market in 1976 with a handful of farmers offering fresh produce as an alternative to the withered lettuce and carrots found in many supermarkets, has grown to include more bakers to customers who show up every week to stock up and to others who may have just happened on the market. Well-known merchants such as Bread Alone Bakery from Boiceville, NY, set up shop on a regular basis. Located on Rt. 28, about 20 minutes from the Thruway’s Exit 19 on Rt. 28, Bread Alone may very well sell more product at the Farmer’s Market than it does in its little building upstate. On any given day at the Farmer’s Market there may be up to 60,000 shoppers wandering among the stalls, buying produce or just chatting with the farmers. The Union Square Farmer’s Market may well be considered the “Flagship” of such markets with an unparalleled variety of fresh produce to choose from. Most of the fruits and could only be fresher if they were eaten at the farm itself. Years ago in the outer boroughs it wasn’t uncommon for old Italian vegetable merchants to ply the streets in horse drawn

wagons with their wares. It was a regular sight for people with small vegetable gardens to follow the horses with shovel and pail to gather up natural fertilizer for their plots. Today, even in Manhattan, there are any number of small plots for homegrown farms themselves have long since become fond memories. The Museum uses crop rotation, companion planting and cover cropping instead of commercial fertilizer and pesticides. Although it sells most of its product on-site, it also distributes honey, eggs, herbs and vegetables within a 15-mile radius to ensure freshness. They also offer seasonal festivals,

Master of Music By Christopher A. Pape As an arbitrator of musical tastes in the country, Sharon Dastur, has no equal. Although Ms. Dastur’s name may not be of the household variety, she is or anyone you know listens to Z100 (100.3 on the dial) than you have been affected and swayed by her decisions, for she is the program director whom overseas all of the station’s content, hiring of staff and is the point person for the station’s highly other words, the buck stops with her. Together and with the help of all the staff at the station, they are responsible for creating content and playing songs that have made it the largest Top 40 station in the world and the envy of all. her passion for music, how she broke into the business, what it means to be a New Yorker, how she decides on what to play and the planning for and executing of Jingle Ball – the bonanza of talent that is displayed every December at Madison Square Garden. Sharon Dastur (SD): I was born in New Jersey and moved, as a child, to Texas. I always loved music because I was around it. While in college, I got an internship at a Pop radio station – KBRE 104.1 in Houston. Even back then, I had a connection with Elvis Duran. He had worked at KBRE at one point in his
midday, afternoon and evenings. These are the people that represent our brand, people who know who our core listeners are and what motivates them.
went back to Austin, where I went to school, got another internship at a Top 40 station; and someone told me about the new program director and morning guy. It turned out to be Elvis and he had just moved from New York. I couldn’t believe that someone would move from Manhattan to work in Austin. I never met him, but it’s just such a twist of fate that all these years later, I’m the program director and he’s the morning guy on the biggest radio station in the world.

He is absolutely incredible, and makes such a personal connection with the audience. Music is the most important factor of our radio station. With so many different outlets to get music, our goal is to be playing all the hits and playing variety. You’d think that be easy because there’s so much great music. But, understanding the way listeners consume your products – in spurts and at odd moments – compels you to always be playing the best.
R: What does a program director do? SD: Everything you hear on the radio is guided by the program director. I put together

I hope that Sharon and I become friends becasue she is sweet, vivacious and as beautiful as her pictures suggest. R: Can you describe Z100 for us? SD: We are a mass appeal station that plays the best of pop, rock, rap, hip-hop and R&B. We take all the genres and all the styles and just play the best songs. So every time you tune in, you’re hearing a hit. We play just the cream of the crop from all of the different genres. The music product that is available at the moment hasn’t been this strong in years. Recently, Billboard Magazine described what’s known as the Z100 factor. The magazine reached out to record labels and asked them

of approval. It makes all of us proud to be associated with the station. We work on many different projects with many different artists. We have a theater, the iHeartRadio Theater; we’ve had everyone from Katy Perry, Harry Connick Jr. to Earth Wind & Fire to Lady Gaga. So many artists have performed there and many listeners get the opportunity to go for free – we give away tickets. Booking events like this, in such an intimate setting with only 200 people – it’s such a positive thing.

R: How much actual research goes into choosing a particular song? SD: You have to have a balance of art and science. We do phone surveys with our listeners, asking them to rate songs being played – that’s the science. We do that every week. We really what to know what they think about each of the songs that we are playing; through this we can really determine which of the biggest testing songs are. The most popular goes into what is known as a power rotation. R: Tells us about your involvement with Z100’s Jingle Ball. SD: The event is in December – this year
. We start to think about booking artists in March – working with record labels to pencil the date in. We want to make sure that we can secure the best th
until the September time frame because some that were hot in March may not be hot now. Because it’s such a big event and gets so much press, I’ve actually had talent beg to participate. Obviously, we have a budget and it’s my job to make sure we don’t go over it. We have a variety of styles that perform; the show has so much energy. There is a huge support team that puts it together. The show like only minutes have gone by – that’s how engrossing it is.
I’m jealous that Sharon got to meet and spend time with my idol, Madonna. She told me at the interview that she’s been to five of her shows. At that moment, all I could feel was pangs of jealousy, as I’ve never been to any.
R: On another note, what does it mean to be a New Yorker? SD: Everyone has their own ‘wanting to make it in New York’ story. But literally, once I had graduated from college, I would always listen to Barbra’s, New York State of Mind. Every time I’d hear it, I thought – I don’t know how I’m going to get there or what I’m going to do there – but I know I’m going to be working in New York and be successful doing it. Finally, when the call came for a job here, I didn’t even have to ask what the details were, I said, “Is it a job in New York? Yes.” Technically, I was moving away from I still, to this day, am obsessed with this city. This city is always changing – there is something always different and exciting
going on. I’m a big foodie; I love trying new restaurants. I love that there are so many different experiences that no one could every do them all in a lifetime. For Elvis’ birthday, he rented a NY Waterway Taxi to take 20 of us around Manhattan. It was late at night and we were on the boat, staring at the skyline and thinking this is the most unbelievable and magical city in the world. Here is anoher good one. Recently, I was at Alicia Keys’ gorgeous studio. It was just me, two record label executives and Alicia. She had a rooftop deck and we stood there looking at the skyline. I asked her, “Do you ever get sick of this view?” And she replied, “I could never get sick of this. This is why I love New York; you take it

Within these colourful pages of our Resident magazine, you will be accustomed to reading about sunnier climates, hotspot restaurants, and culture in Manhattan and the Hamptons. And we pride ourselves on escorting you to a world of luxury. Today, I must temporarily buck this trend and present to you the grave and largely unheard of subject at the heart of Chris Bohjalian’s latest novel, The Sandcastle Girls. This is the subject of the Armenian Genocide. Chris Bohjalian is a New York Times best‘Midwives’, which, along with his newest novel, made it into Oprah Winfrey’s Book Club. In July of this year, he released what is for him the most important book that he has ever written. This book was the result of more than a year’s worth of research into his own family’s past, in which he uncovers the horrors that occurred in Eastern Turkey and While Bohjalian’s novel may be inspired by true events, it is told in a way that only he could tell. A masterfully controlled narrative takes you through a love story set in wartime. It is not an enjoyable, pleasant read – not in the traditional sense anyway- but it is a captivating and emotionally stirring journey through a hitherto untraveled path.
My grandparents were genocide survivors, but I will never know exactly what they endured just outside Constantinopleand in Egypt. However, I did know my grandparents as my grandpa and grandma, so I created a female version of me, who knows far too little about her Armenian ancestry but for a variety of reasons will need to discover the past. Armen and Elizabeth are not my grandparents, but Laura is me. The second part of the structure is a more traditional ‘Jamesian’ third person novel, and that is a big sweeping historical epic; I love epics and love stories such as Corelli’s Mandolin and Birdsong. And I wanted this novel to be like those books. I wanted it to be a big sweeping love story in the midst of war, which is why I chose third person for that. And the book is a detective story in a way, she sees this this photo that may be linked to her family so she digs into the past in ways she never has before. It moves back and forth in time because most people don’t know about the Armenian genocide, and as Laura says we need a book about the Armenian Genocide for dummies and you can’t do that without it being clunky in third person because it becomes a historical text, but if you have a a litany of all the ways that Armenians were systematically killed, then it works.
Resident (R): I wanted to start by asking about the title itself; aside from its link to the

Something I will tell you is that I am convinced that most successful books often The Great Gatsby, The Kite Runner, The Da Vinci Code. Moreover, I wanted a lot of people from around the world who do not know about the Armenian Genocide to read this novel, so I began with the premise that
would read it. The title also does a couple of things: it is an ironic juxtaposition of what Elizabeth Endicott thinks of sand, she thinks of cape cod and the beach; and then there is Hatoun, who thinks of sand with very different associations. I hadn’t consciously thought of it being an enclave of happiness but that is an interesting idea. R: What made you choose this particular
CB: I needed a personal way into this novel.
R: What is your writing process, how did you CB: I was deeply invested in this book. It was personally very important to me. But I am used to writing so I am capable of compartmentalising my thoughts and ideas. Nevertheless, whenever I wrote a scene with my books are going and I usually rely on my characters to take me through, and there were points when I thought she is going to die because I didn’t know if she was going to or not. What was different about this book is partum. I really missed my characters. R: Berk’s Turkish parents talk pejoratively about Armenians; how did it feel to write CB: Whenever I see Turkish denial or fabrication I am appalled. That scene you are referring to was based on a scene from my childhood. We were at a Turkish family’s house for a party, and the only time I heard him speak Armenian was when he was bickering with his parents. So when we were leaving I was surprised that all of a sudden I heard him speak Turkish to the host. And I asked him about that and he said he wanted them to know he understood what they had been saying about Armenians and how they were traitors. He didn’t tell me exactly what they said until some years later.

R: Was the torture in the novel based on real R: There is a link to Alice in Wonderland and Hatoun in the book, what do you mean CB: It is interesting how life in glorious ways impacts art. While I was writing this book of high school with a performance of ‘Alice Underground’, which was a reimagining of the story. So I spent a lot of time thinking about Alice in Wonderland. I reread it and what struck me was that I realised this is a bloody nightmare! So it made me think what it would be like for Alice in real life, and I already had this character, Hatoun, who had struggled in from the desert. At that point I had written the scene in which she sees her
CB: In the Armenian library and museum of America in Watertown, the curator showed me this collar that was used on a man during the march. After his wife was raped, the gendarmes castrated him and made him walk on his hands and knees until he couldn’t keep up then, they shot him. I was reading an interview with a Turkish gendarme in 1919, and the British interviewer asked him what kind of weapons they had on these marches and he said they had good weapons, he had ten Armenians with one bullet. Talat Pasha, the chief orchestrator of the Armenian Genocide, was sentenced to death in absentia but these soldiers saw no irony in boasting

Running a successful restaurant is tough, especially, here where conquering New York is an almost impossible task. And add to that the enormous pressure it must be to live up to the Trump name and you have a combination that appears excruciatingly daunting. But as the saying goes â&#x20AC;&#x201C; high risk, high reward. Koi, in the Bryant Park Hotel, which was recently reviewed in a previous edition, is a restaurant that has overcome many obstacles with aplomb and is a truly successful brand. With locations around the world, they have become known for their wildly delicious creations and hip interiors. So it is with a newer, sleeker and more intimate space. Just recently, I was there The space, maybe a quarter of the size of its sister New York location, is setup in a way to maximize private conversation. My guest and I found ourselves in at a small circular table with a banquet. It was an interesting concept that encouraged close conversation. order a dish from each of the categories - soups, salads, Koi signature dishes, loved the Koi crispy rice with Yellowtail. As the name suggests, the rice is creamy rock shrimp tempura bathed in a spicy mayo. Each bite was joy in
Japanese eatery, they are nonetheless delicious. Their signature creation, the Koi Dragon roll was opulence on a plate. Served with shrimp tempura, eel and baked crab, it was everything that I like in one dish. The crunch from the tempura was paired well with the silkiness of the baked crab. And the eel provide the right amount of brininess that was needed. The baked lobster roll is also worthy of praise and was hearty, smooth and delectable. For their larger dishes, we had the Miso bronzed black cod. Served with vegetables gave nice contrast to the dish. but in a more intimate and romantic setting, than look no further than Koi at Soho Trump.
