THE SEPTEMBER ISSUE

W

elcome back New York! After a long, hot and relaxing summer the city finally comes alive after Labor Day. September was always one of my favorite months with the US Open Finals, Fashion Week, and the beginning of fall’s best cultural events. It’s also a time when the humidity starts to subside, and nights become crisper, providing an opportunity to rock our favorite fall fashion staples we’ve been waiting to break out of the closet. Our feature story this month is with the talented Jonathan Tucker, Hollywood’s rising star. Jonathan’s talent lies in his ability to bring out the raw energy of a character. And during our cover shoot with him, he channeled a young Marlon Brando, Sean Penn and James Dean. He has worked with some of the biggest names in Hollywood and chooses out-of-the-box complex roles that define his range of capabilities. Since he is starting to come into his own as a leading Hollywood actor, he was our choice for our Men’s fashion editorial this month. The contemporary art scene is at its height, and this month we looked to George Berges whose eponymous SoHo gallery continues to set the trend for today’s contemporary art landscape. They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but collecting art as an investment is a fine balance between filling your walls with pieces you love, and also having a collector’s eye, which is insight that George has given us this month.

Come stay where many revolutionary dignitaries and influential guests have slept, such as George Washington, Alexander Hamilton and Marquis De Lafayette.

While the Hamptons social scene has officially come to a close, September is a month for social butterflies to emerge from their Park Avenue cocoons with a bevy of hot new fashions as well as a whirlwind of fall events this month. Now is the perfect time to spread your wings and explore everything the greatest city in the world has to offer.

technology and powerful, patented formulas. Infinitude is launched at Bergdorf Goodman in New York City, Cos Bar (located in Brookfield Place), and Nordstrom Online. Infinitude is a multifunctional, not multi-step product designed to simplify your daily routine, as a unique infusion of fermented white truffle, falernum grape extract, pure olive oil together with three types of hyaluronic acids. Infinitude is one product, with seven solutions, the first and only formula calibrated to give your skin exactly what it needs, day after day, regardless of skin type. Infinitude has transformative skin benefits as it moisturizes, nourishes, balances, eliminates the look of wrinkles, virtually erases fine lines, plumps skin, increases elasticity, evens tone, illuminates, prevents scarring, lightens the

look of brown spots and smooths scars - all with just one product. When you apply MMXV Infinitude, a revolutionary cytomimetic technology “reads” the macromolecular construction of the skin, allowing each ingredient to work with optimal efficiency, whatever the skin type and whatever its age. “This is my life’s work. MMXV Infinitude is a resultsbased product developed in world-class laboratories, but it’s composition also acknowledges a secret cosmetic tradition going back to the Romans. And it works!” - Dr. Mirela Mitan. mmxvinfinitude.com

VITALFIT NUTRITION The Challenges of Health & Wellness But Not For These Two Young Entrepreneurs By W.A. MULLER

C

ameron Fischer and Alfred Schofield, Co-founders of VitalFit Nutrition, wanted a different approach to the already crowded marketplace of health & wellness. The two young entrepreneurs who met in business school, came up with a way to interrupt the supplement industry and began their mission with a plant-based business that operates through design and influencer business models that are unique to the industry. Fischer and Schofield began working with an extensive amount of people on the research and end-user levels to identify problems. By staying flexible in their supply chain, they were able to come up with an idea, get everything they need, test it with people in their market and then innovate and iterate just as quickly. Fischer and Schofield spend several days out in the field a week and conduct demos where anyone can

22 | resident.com

sample the product and give them the opportunity to directly engage with their audience. While in grad school, how did you know that you wanted to be in the supplement business? CF: VitalFit actually started out as a grad school thesis project. Everyone in our program was asked to pitch a business concept to solve a real-life problem. At the end, a few ideas were selected to work on and refine. I pitched developing a network of mobile pop-up shops on college campuses where students could work with someone to create their own safe supplement routines based on their goals. Like I said, a lot of C ideas. The business would be impossible to scale, but the notion that misinformation is so rampant in the supplement industry resonated with enough people to be selected. Even though Alfred and I were in different groups, we’d stay up late at night developing and refining the idea

for VitalFit together and noticed a few things. One, a gap in the market between lifestyle and performance products. We saw there were a lot of companies releasing your basic greens powders and multivitamins and plenty of others creating products for athletic performance, but few were creating products for the person in the middle— the fitness forward, health conscious person like us who maintain and active lifestyle without training for a particular sport. Two, the fitness landscape is quickly evolving: new workouts, new goals and new environments, but the vitamin and supplement industry, especially the plant-based side of it, is not. We wanted to utilize a different design approach to create a modern product line, tailored for the modern workout. You’re in one competitive space. How do you define yourselves to remain out of the clutter? AS: Yes, it seems like there’s a million different

companies out there and in fairness, there are a lot of companies that make great products! That being said, there are a few things that we do that make us different than other companies out there. It all starts with our process. At Babson, we learned the “design thinking approach” where you start with the problem and then work with a community to create a solution – and that is exactly what we do. We work with the fitness community to find out what the biggest needs are and then we work with our team of doctors and nutritionists to identify ingredients that might help solve this problem. We then test extensively as we work to find the perfect solution! Beyond that, we also source all of our ingredients independently – something that is really unique in the space and results in products of the highest quality – even if it complicates our supply chain a bit! Finally, we have a keen focus on recovery. This is an area that hasn’t been a focus in the past but as we keep our ears to the ground, it’s the area that most people struggle with. CF: A big differentiator for us is our relationbased approach to product development. At Babson, we learned a lot about the designthinking process, something we’ve made a core competency of our company. We design all of our products with our end users, incorporating their needs and feedback throughout the process. We invite fitness professionals, wellness experts and health-conscious people like us to pinpoint

real needs and create products that solve them. From ingredients to functions, testing to design, we rely on collaboration as a means for building trust with our customers and better, purposedriven products. We read that you both were awarded with the Entrepreneurs of the Year Award. WOW! WOW! WOW! What do you attribute this huge acknowledgement with? AS: Yes – that was quite an honor that we were extremely grateful to receive! I think that one of the reasons why we received this award was because we are genuine in our mission and stand behind what we’re doing. There’s so much distrust in this industry and so many companies out there to make a quick buck, so I think the fact that we are passionate and really involved at the ground level and within the community is what resonates most with people.

We know you have a large online presence. Can you list where your products are currently being sold? AS: Absolutely! We started our brand in Boston and you can find our products all over the city whether in fitness studios, health stores or gyms! We actually launched our brand at Cambridge Naturals, which is one of the best natural products stores in the region and an absolute institution! We are also partnered with various stores throughout the country with one of the most notable partners being Erewhon Market in California – their stores are

absolutely breathtaking! Another one of our favorite partners is The Feed, a brand based out of Boulder – and the largest e-commerce sports nutrition site. They have a strong vetting process and only sell the best products in the industry – we are so proud to work with them and actually just finished our biggest promotion to date during the Tour De France! We also sell our products on our e-commerce platform and will be available on Amazon shortly as well!

What is in the future for VitalFit? Any additional supplements? Partnerships? AS: There is so much in the pipeline it’s hard to even know where to start! We are actually in the process of releasing a new product and have a few more in the pipeline. We’re also constantly looking for innovative, natural ingredients and will hopefully continue to release new products as our discovery and learning continues! We just completed our first year of sales and while the growth has been exciting, we’re focused on bringing VitalFit to the next level and expanding to an ever-wider audience. So, we are launching with a few amazing partners (keep an eye out!) and continuing to bring our products to alternative channels where you may not have seen supplements in the past.

JONATHAN TUCKER The Archetypical Actor By HAYLEY LAVIN

onathan Tucker is a prolific actor that has taken the television world by storm. The Boston native has repeatedly demonstrated that some of the best and most pivotal roles in cinema and television are those portrayed by supporting characters, showing that evenhaving a minor part, can help add to the bigger story. playing the same character twice, Tucker is drawn to archetypical roles and channels the raw energy once seen in a young Brando, Sean Penn or James Dean. Tucker is more likely to be seen on television series, than in films. The actor has grown to prefer the

platform of television, as it reaches an audience more easily. Regardless of ratings, television viewer bases have a more significant guarantee than film. Some of Jonathan’s most recent works include HBO’s Westworld, FX’s Snowfall as well as Justified, Starz’s American Gods and Audience Network’s

Kingdom. Whether it be the world of Mixed Martial Arts, an old-time gunman in a modern-day Western or a Vietnam War veteran with PTSD in 1980’s Los Angeles’ notorious drug scene, Jonathan enjoys roles and stories that contain raw and authentic emotions. It takes an immense amount of talent to be able to play a young Irish American male struggling between his passion of becoming an artist and taking care of his three brothers, while getting involved in New York City’s organized crime scene (Black Donnellys) to being a politician and the mayor of Berkeley, California (Parenthood). The diversity of the characters Jonathan plays make him stand out as an actor, as he cannot be pigeonholed into one type of role. Mr. Tucker is currently filming the first season of City on a Hill; a Showtime crime drama set in Boston during the early 1990s and will be working alongside Kevin Bacon and Aldis Hodge on the

drama. Though he hails from Boston, he had not read anything since J. Anthony Lukas’ PulitzerPrize-winning book Common Ground that evoked hometown pride, until he read the talented Chuck MacLean’s script. He is excited to be working with executive producers, and fellow Bostonians Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, who shed light onto the city of Charlestown, as well as other specific neighborhoods, characters, storylines and themes and introduce them to a greater audience. Dedicated to giving characters and subcultures that do not usually get the type of spotlight and attention they deserve, as an actor and artist, Tucker loves being able to share and tell these underrated stories. Mr. Tucker is happily not typecast; this allows him to play a diverse range of characters, all with different layers and backgrounds. Having this type of freedom allows Mr. Tucker to truly understand his characters and unveil what lies beneath the surface. Though the characters he portrays lean toward a more

serious and even dark side, Jonathan tries to have fun with these roles and often introduces a sense of levity during intense moments and settings; these are the types of roles that excite Jonathan most and what he wants to be associated with for all time. Jonathan is a one-of-a-kind actor; he genuinely cares about the roles he plays, trying to represent the characters and their stories as accurately as possible. He is at a point in his career where he is not just trying to please everyone, but rather collaborate and create something beautiful together. Mr. Tucker is quite humble and knows that everyone, himself included, is fallible and that his style of acting will not work with every type of genre and is more than fine with that. The most significant breakthrough that Mr. Tucker has had as an actor is being no longer afraid of failure and being able to take something away from each acting experience. A considerable part of the film and television industry

Tucker gives 110 percent when portraying a character and is willing to take risks, regardless of the criticism he might receive. When preparing for a new role, Tucker often looks at his own life and experiences, observations and past roles and sees how he can incorporate those details into his developing character. The minute details that most people tend to overlook are some of the most critical when creating and getting into the mindset of a new character. It forces Jonathan, to pay attention and be curious about the world around him. Being an actor gives Jonathan the opportunity to empathize and experience different scenarios, such as having your car break down in the middle of the desert with no sunscreen or water, which in real life he would not usually get the chance to encounter. One of the significant aspects of working in the entertainment industry is that it can reach people on a personal level. Jonathan very much enjoys being in service to others, whether through acting or for non-for-profit work with charities. Mr. Tucker and a friend of his from high school started the not-for-profit charity, The Pegasus Fund, which takes top performing students from underserved communities in the Los Angeles area and sends them to a non-academic camp for three consecutive summers to enjoy a summer camp experience. The fund is also aimed to help the students acclimate an often private secondary school in which they have already shown interest. Jonathan finds it gratifying to know that he and, people in general, have the power to touch somebody else’s life, no matter how big or small. Jonathan Tucker is definitely an actor to keep an eye out for. You never know what kind of role he might play next.

is establishing relationships, and even though there have been many times in which Tucker did not get the specific role he auditioned for, his hard work and dedication to his craft did not go unnoticed and has often led him to future collaborations and partnerships with producers and directors.

DR. EDWARD ALVAREZ New York’s Top Cosmetic Dentist By HAYLEY LAVIN Photo By Udo Spreitzenbarth

D

r. Edward Alvarez knew he wanted to be a dentist since the age of seven and is currently living the dream shaping, molding and sculpting the cosmetic dental industry one smile at a time. Son of Colombian immigrants, Alvarez, along with his siblings, were always told that education was of prime importance and that success in their family, as well as their culture, was being a professional. Both of his two older sisters went on to become doctors and inspired Alvarez to follow a similar, yet different career path at a young age. Around the same time that his sisters were in medical school,

a close friend of the family had graduated from dental school and opened his own practice where Alvarez was able to help by holding the suction or just observe whenever he visited. Alvarez quickly fell in love with the dental profession and made it his mission to become a dentist. Confident and determined about his future, Alvarez only applied to one school, New York University (NYU). NYU has an advanced seven-year combined degree program, which allowed Alvarez to skip one year of university, and finish in seven years instead of eight. Alvarez was only 20 years old when he started dental school and graduated as

the youngest male in his class, at the age of 24. Alvarez’s favorite part about being a dentist is helping people; “Changing a patients’ smile is more than just changing the way they look, it is many times about changing the way they feel, the way the patient relates to the world, relieving them of scars and insecurities they have carried their entire lives.” Alvarez proudly recalls a story that drives the point about the real reason he became a dentist, “I remember one patient very clearly, and he is one of the ones that will always guide my career and what I do. When I was a student at NYU during the mid and late 1990’s, people in the medical field

were still very ignorant and afraid of anyone who was HIV+. I can still remember the callousness of colleagues and how they treated anyone who entered their doors and was HIV+ or had AIDS. They would do anything possible to dissuade them or somehow refuse them treatment. One day a man came into the oral surgery clinic with a horrible toothache and infection. Everyone there would pick up another chart and try to do everything possible to not see him, but one other person and I decided we needed to help him. After removing his infected tooth, the man started crying, not from pain, but from appreciation. He told us that he had been in pain for so long, and that he went from office to office, and no one wanted to help him. The fact that we treated him, and took care of him, meant the world to him. The way he said thank you, and how he shook our hands, and the look in his eyes will never leave my soul. It cemented in me why I chose to become a dentist, and that it was to help people. No amount of money can ever compare to the feeling I got that day from that man.” For Alvarez, helping people feel better, healthier, more confident and helping bring out the beauty that has always been there, is the most satisfying part of his job. Alvarez, who has been in the industry for over 20 years, believes that “technology plays an incredible part in modern cosmetic and reconstructive dentistry.” He and his team aim to put the patients’ comfort first, that is why he has always dedicated himself and his practice to be the most advanced possible. Simply put, Alvarez and his team have made going to the dentist easier for patients. Procedures that typically would take two appointments can be completed in a single visit. For over a decade, Alvarez has been leader in the use of CEREC CAD/ CAM technology and has earned his advanced training and certification from the prestigious Scottsdale Center for Dentistry. CEREC CAD/CAM allows him to do veneers, all ceramic crowns, metal free

bridges, and other dental restorations in about an hour. CAD/CAM, which stands for computer aided design/computer aided manufacture has been a staple of other industries such as aerospace, the automotive industry, and the jewelry business where the fabrication of intricate, precise products are of the utmost importance. In dentistry, CAD/CAM allows him to eliminate all types of impression materials from the work flow. No longer do patients have to worry that they are going to gag or have an allergic reaction to a material that is placed in their mouths. A high speed, high definition camera is used to capture images of teeth and other structures inside the mouth and create a virtual 3-D model. From that model, everything from a single tooth, to a full smile makeover can then be designed chairside, with the patient’s immediate input. It is truly the definition of custom dentistry for the 21st century. Once the design is completed and approved, the system will make a crown or veneer from a solid block of porcelain, zirconia, or ceramic in about 10 minutes. There is no more need for temporaries or weeks for a laboratory to complete the restoration, which would require the patient to return for a second visit. This is of supreme importance to many of his patients. Alvarez states, “My patients want to be in and out, and don’t want to be numbed twice. I have patients that live everywhere from Los Angeles, to London, Miami, and even Australia, so a second visit is not possible. When the US Open Tennis Championship is in town, I many times have players and coaches who require treatment during the time they are here, and I am able to do that for them.” Alvarez has been a leader in the use of lasers in dentistry and is a fellow of the World Clinical Laser Institute, the world’s largest dental laser education organization. He has also lectured and trained dentists in both the United States, as well as in Latin America on the use of lasers in dentistry. In his practice, Alvarez uses multiple types of lasers that

will do everything from treating cavities and preparing crowns and veneers, many times without the use of anesthesia, to doing both hard tissue surgery (where bone is recontoured), soft tissue surgery (treatment of things such as gummy smiles, and other periodontal issues, without the use of a scalpel), and treatment of problems such as cold sores, canker sores, and others. Alvarez and his team are currently preparing to move their Murray Hill office to 30 East 40th Street, Suite 1002 off Park Ave. The move will place the practice in a close proximity to Grand Central and provide better mass transit accessibility to patients from all over the city. The new office is going to be constructed in a way that will not only make the patients feel comfortable in the dentist chair, but also in the reception area. The Park Avenue office will be more than double the size of the current office and have more doctors on board, allowing Alvarez and his practice to be open six days a week. “I want my patients to truly have a first-class experience not only in the dental chair, but in the rest of the office too. Marble floors, massaging and heated dental chairs, HDTV monitors not only on treatment room walls, but ceilings as well, LED lighting, aroma and temperature-controlled rooms, high speed WiFi, plush pillows and blankets, and many other items will all be part of the experience. We look to maintain that 5 star rating we have, and to exceed all our patients’ expectations. Just about every type of technology available in dentistry will be available in our new office. Everything from computer-controlled delivery of local anesthesia, to 3-D facial imaging and smile design, to every type of dental diagnostic aid will be part of our office. You must come in to experience it.” In addition to the traditional business hours, Alvarez will be expanding his concierge service, where his VIP patients can be seen at off ours, in order to accommodate their busy schedules. Currently, as well as in the past, Alvarez has seen patients such as US Open tennis players, diplomats

during the UN General Assembly, recording artists during award shows, and athletes visiting New York City, all during late nights and weekends, when there was no other option available to them. When he is not busy behind the dentist chair, Alvarez can be found performing as a DJ. After a trip in the early 2000’s to Ibiza, Alvarez was determined to learn the art of DJing and has since had the privilege of DJing on the main stage at the 2014 and 2015 EDC (Electric Daisy Carnival) in New York at MetLife Stadium. He has also played in some of the largest nightclubs in the world, including Pacha NYC and Exchange in Los Angeles, where he had a residency. In addition to bringing audiences together through music, Alvarez and his fiancé Alina enjoy giving back to charities, particularly those that help benefit animals, and the community as well. Having a Pug and a French Bulldog, Alvarez and Alina recently have been donating to “Slaughterhouse Survivors” which is a nonprofit in China that rescues dogs from things such as the Yulin Dog Meat Festival. Alvarez also gives to the Israel Guide Dog Center for the Blind. They provide training to guide dogs for Israelis who suffer from blindness. Alvarez is a big supporter of our military and war heroes. With his office, Alvarez participates in “Freedom Day USA,” which is America’s largest military thank you event. One day a year, his practice provides free services to active military, their families and veterans. Since 2008, Alvarez has served as a Police Surgeon for the New York State Troopers PBA, as well as the Amtrak Police FOP. He provides his services to troopers and officers injured in the line of duty and consults and advises in their medical treatment when requested. As a member, Alvarez has been able to go out and help during times of need, such as during Hurricane Sandy where he was out in the field for two weeks providing medical care and assistance to fellow New Yorkers. nyclaserdentist.com @nyclaserdentist

SEAMORE’S Quality Seafood, Done Right! By Christopher A. Pape | Interior Photo by Alexander Stein

40 | resident.com

I

t’s become common knowledge – even outside the food world – that the earth’s oceans have declining stockpiles of our favored fishes. Soon, we might see a future with no bluefin tuna, salmon or other high-end fish that America and the rest of the developed world (especially Japan) has come to adore. That is the thesis behind Seamore’s, an everexpanding seafood restaurant in New York that’s recently opened its sixth location, this time in the Brookfield Mall. Founded by Michael Chernow in the summer of 2015, Seamore’s is known for excellent, healthy and delicious seafood. The concept behind this restaurant empire is that the fish is 100% sustainable, sourced as close to home as possible. Michael’s goal was to create restaurants that were approachable, comforting, and delicious, while still being environmentally sound. Having dined at their original location in Nolita, I knew what to expect: fresh fish, inventive combinations of flavor, personable staff and charming décor. And that’s exactly what I found at their newest location, in Battery Park City. Stepping into the restaurant, I was immediately struck both by its nod to the sea and how chic the space was. As for the food, the portions were large and more importantly, of high quality. We started with scallop crudo served with crispy plantains, avocado, lime, salsa verde and a tune poke with ponzu, peanut and avocado. The scallope was a flavorful dish, executed with care and precision. We loved the acidity and obvious freshness of the plate. While the tuna evoked Thailand, both dishes were perfect representations of the thought and care the restaurant puts into its dishes. Moving onto the mains, we loved the idea of the Reel Deal, a build-your-own fish dish served with sustainably caught fish and four options for sauce. Here, we had monkfish with a miso butter sauce that paired perfectly with the delicate, flaky nature of the fish. We also loved the blackened shrimp tacos, which was served with molé blanco, avocado, queso fresco, jalapeño aioli. In the final analysis, Seamore’s is obviously doing something right; on the night my guest and I were there, it was a crowded room. You will love the many fish selections, the great cocktail program, the knowledgeable and friendly staff and the excellently prepared dishes. Book your table today!

THE GREAT ITALIAN TRILOGY Fine Dining at Il Gattopardo, The Leopard at des Artistes & Mozzarella & Vino By PETER ELSTON

T

he Godfather movies are considered by many to be the greatest Italian trilogy of all time. However, over the past few years, there is only another Italian trilogy that stands above the rest in New York City’s dining scene; Il Gattopardo, The Leopard at des Artistes, and Mozzarella & Vino. These three restaurants set the standard for fine Italian dining, with the only debate being whose is everyone’s favorite of the three.

restaurant at the Museum of Modern Art of New York, and Union Bar & Grill in Great Barrington, MA. In Septem-ber 2001 he opened Il Gattopardo, just across from MoMA, along with his wife Paula Bolla-Sorrentino, and his talented Executive Chef Vito Gnazzo. In 2011, the Sorrentinos also embraced one of the most rewarding journeys of their careers, the rebirth of the restaurant in the landmarked Hotel des Artistes – The Leopard at des Artistes.

The Il Gattopardo family of restaurants is owned by husband-and-wife team Gianfranco and Paula Bol-la Sorrentino, with Partner Chef Vito Gnazzo. Originally from Naples, Italy, Gianfranco Sorrentino car-ries over 40 years of experience in restaurant management from the Quisitana Hotel in Capri, Dorches-ter Hotel in London, Four Seasons Hotel in Tokyo, Bice restaurant in New York, Sette MoMA

PART I: IL GATTOPARDO Fine dining icon Il Gattopardo opened in 2001, and still attracts a loyal clientele who come for both the authentic southern Italian cuisine and the warm, Italian hospitality. Il Gattopardo is located in the his-torically landmarked Rockefeller Townhouses at 13-15 West 54th Street.

42 | resident.com

Aside from the sleek, modern main dining room, the restaurant also boasts a beautiful, lushly-planted 8-story Atrium, in which a wide range of private events are held. Il Gattopardo serves traditional Southern Italian comfort food that has been adapted for the contemporary palate without compromising the authenticity of the cuisine, which became a must to its loyal upscale New Yorker clientele. 13-15 W 54th St, New York, NY 10019 212.246.0412 ilgattopardonyc.com. PART II: THE LEOPARD AT DES ARTISTES Five years ago, in the historically landmarked Hotel

des Artistes at 1 West 67th Street, on a beautiful, treelined block between Central Park and Lincoln Center, Gianfranco Sorrentino and his wife Paula Bolla Sorrentino, along with Partner Chef Vito Gnazzo, opened The Leopard at des Artistes. The open-ing included a floorto-ceiling renovation of the existing space, and a complete restoration of the origi-nal, famed Howard Chandler Christy murals that adorn its walls. The Leopard at des Artistes boasts a diverse menu that finds its roots in the area once known as The Kingdom of Two Sicilies of the mid-1800s, and the culinary traditions of Campania, Basilicata, Calabria, Apulia, Sardinia, and of course, Sicily. The menu also features dishes traditionally found in regions out-side of southern Italy, such as Lazio and Umbria. At the Leopard at des Artistes, Chef Vito’s culinary signature of authentic southern Italian comfort food is what visitors and locals alike flock to the restaurant for. 1 W 67th St, New York, NY 10023 212.787.8767 theleopardnyc.com PART III: MOZZARELLA & VINO Mozzarella & Vino, located at the former Il Gattopardo space, at 33 west 54th Street - as you may know, Il Gattopardo moved to the new location, on the same block at number 13 West. Their talented Chef Vito Gnazzo is responsible for the mouthwatering menu that reflects the simplicity of authentic Italian ingredients, with a heavy emphasis on the Mozzarella di bufala Campania, Italian cheeses and affettati. Based mostly on classic Italian antipasti, such as arancini, panzarotti, and mozzarella rolls, they also serve a wonderful selection of panini , soups, salads, and of course mozzarella on all shapes and combinations ‌ even on desserts. Their enoteca style bar focuses on showcasing rather smaller family estates and independent Italian winemakers. They proudly share beloved wines, definitely not mainstream, wines that translates his-tory, quality and good value. A variety of by the glass is offered, as well as by the bottle. CHOTTO MATTE The Ultimate Nikkei Experience By HILLARY LATOS

B

ringing the artistic culinary energy of Tokyo combined with London’s Soho comes Miami Beach’s latest culinary gem- Chotto Matte. Specializing in Nikkei cuisine, classic Japanese dishes are given a contemporary twist with the addition of Latin and Peruvian flavors and ingredients served in a vibrant and stunning dining environment. Founded by Kurt Zdesar and the NZR Group, this is their first U.S. location. Located behind a subtle white façade in an alley just off Lincoln Road is Chotto Mate. Andy Martin Architects (AMA) stunning design blends CHOTTO MATTE’s signature Tokyo vibe with Miami’s tropical life. The 219-seat restaurant and bar features Shou Sugi Ban wood ceilings and lush, hanging gardens created by Raymond Jungles. A large floating ceiling inspired by the abstracted Japanese roof style known as ‘Irimoya’ delivers year-round al fresco dining with a fully retractable roof. Imported in its entirety, a 19-ton Sicilian boulder creates a dramatic focal point between the sushi bar and cocktail area while

48 | resident.com

a vibrant mural created by Miami’s renown graffiti artists Marcel Katz and Ahol Sniffs Glue pours over interior walls. AMA skillfully intertwines natural stone, carbon steel, tinted glass, and dark stained timber for a textured palette, indicative of ‘Japanese sensibility.’

At the helm of the culinary team is Executive Chef Jordan Sclare whose extensive pedigree includes Gordan Ramsay’s 3 Michelin-Star London restaurant; Nobu Park Lane, and CHOTTO MATTE London, Black Roe, Fucina and Pantry Marylebone within the NZR Group. Overseeing the Miami operations is Head Chef Jimmy Gallagher, a Lima native whose previous experience was chef de cuisine at Blue Ribbon Sushi Miami and 1111 Peruvian Bistro. To have a sampling of the chef’s signature dishes opt for the Nikkei Sharing Menu that includes mouthwatering masterpieces such as the Nikkei gyoza with pork, shrimp and yucca; smoked beef

and yuzu tostadito, shrimp spring roll with a shiso ponzu salsa, and branzino ceviche. Other ‘must try’ standouts include the tuna sashimi tostadito, yellowtail sashimi with yuzu truffle soy, tuna tartar with dragon fruit and ponzu chili, mixed Nikkei dressed sushi, lobster and shrimp tempura, and black cod miso. My personal favorite- the Peruvian aji marinated and smoked lamb chops with Peruvian chili miso. Serving daily lunch, happy hour and dinner, CHOTTO MATTE creates a playful dining experience that combines Tokyo’s vibe with Miami’s tropical culture replete with a Robata grill counter, sushi bar with mirroring cocktail bar, lively music, and open-air dining.

Chef Savarese received 3 stars from the New York Times when he was the Chef de Cuisine at La Cote Basque and another 3-stars from the Times during his time overseeing the kitchen at La Cremaillere and finally a third trio of stars for his work at The Tap House, all in New York City. back to the shore. After all, we are the exclusive steakhouse of the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino.” The Robert’s Experience The whole vision of Robert’s Atlantic City started with Mr. Bob Gans. “He always wants us to buy the best products possible,” Chef states, “We also created a décor to match the food, and walk into our beautiful marble tile and wood lounge from the minute you see the fireplace aglow. This is an inviting place to sit, drink or just chat.” On the weekends, Robert’s is hopping with live entertainment. The Menu If you’re visiting Atlantic City, look no further than Robert’s for the ultimate dining experience. “If you’re winning big at the casino or even if you’re not, come on in for a great meal,” said Chef Savarese. “Start with the seafood tower, consisting of oysters, crabmeat, shrimp and lobster. Then explore our appetizers; tuna tartare, Robert’s salad, fresh mozzarella and tomatoes. And then choose one of the best steaks in A.C.”

American Wagyu Kobe Style Gold Label Chef Savarese not only oversees every item on the menu but makes sure the food is prepped in a unique way making each steak the best available, “I feel Americans, in general, always have a love for meat, especially steak. It’s even more so with our menu at Robert’s. We offer six different cutsof steaks which appeal to many tastes and we also have other great options ranging from pastas and seafood. After all, we are at the shore! Chef adds, “the thing that truly sets us apart is our on-site dry aging process that I oversee. We go beyond the normal 28 days drying - I’m not going to say how long but give us a try and you’ll taste the difference.” Robert’s Steakhouse most popular items include the American Wagyu Kobe Style Gold Label “Cube”, the Brick Roasted Free Range Chicken and Seared Sea Scallops.

Papilles Papilles, French for taste buds, is a French farmto-table restaurant located in the East Village that is redefining fine French dining with a creative/ modern menu they call “cuisine vagabonde.” As one of NYC’s rising young talents and Daniel alum, French native Chef Andrea Calstier and his team are serving unforgettable flavors that will have your taste buds yearning for one more bite. Papilles “is a collaboration between Andrea Calstier, his wife Elena Oliver, who designed the minimalist gem, and Nicolas Thoni.” Chef Calstier and his Sous-Chef Dale Kester are constantly pushing the envelope and innovating French cuisine. According to Calstier, “more young French chefs are breaking the codes of the classic gastro-

nomic meal or the Parisian brasserie, and that’s what I would like to bring to the New York culinary scene - an inventive cuisine- elaborated with the best products- resulting from organic farming, sustainable fishing and animal husbandry. My travels around the world and discoveries of new cuisines also influence my recipes, this is what ‘cuisine vagabonde’ means to me. I work with products from the East, Asia, and Latin America using a French approach and technical base, resulting in very interesting combinations and dishes with a nice balance. All of this results in a pleasant and casual environment with an affordable price. High French gastronomy is no longer reserved for the elite.” Diners also enjoy specialty cocktails created by mixologist and co-owner Nicolas Thoni, that are made with fresh seasonal ingredients, such as fresh spices, herbs, and flowers that reflect those of the menu. 127 East 7 St. New York, NY 10009 646.850.5345 papillesrestaurant.com

DALLAS LUXURY

AT THE HOTEL CRESCENT COURT By Kenza Salahdine

P

erfectly situated in the heart of Dallas, the Hotel Crescent Court is a 7 floor hotel situated a short distance away from Love Field Airport, Dallas City Hall, and the Dallas Holocaust museum yet within walking distance to the center of the city making it a perfect spot for both business and leisure activities. Though it opened its doors in 1985, they recently went under a multi million dollar renovation. Their spacious 625 square foot studio suites have sweeping views of downtown with all the comforts of home. This beautiful suite features a sprawling living room, incredible bedroom and a luxuriously appointed bathroom with both a bathtub and a shower. Personal touches include a monogrammed pillow with your initials (at an additional cost) and a heavenly bed to have a blissful rest. After settling properly in your beautiful suite, I would recommend dining at the Five Sixty Restaurant (fivesixtyrestaurant), an incredible Japanese restaurant with 360 degree views on

top of the Reunion Tower. Located only 30min from the hotel, you can enjoy delectable dishes including a tasting menu of five courses made by the talented Executive Chef Jacob Williamson and Pastry Chef Erika Lucio. This is a MUST DO while visiting Dallas. After a blissful sleep, awake your senses with a private yoga class in the beautiful Garden Room or start your day with a delicious breakfast in The Conservatory’s alfresco courtyard restaurant located in the Hotel Crescent Court, that will start your day right. Highlights from the menu include the sharable cinnamon roll and egg white omelette. What would be a getaway without a spa treatment? Indulge in a Crescent Signature Massage at the newly renovated 22,000 square foot spa and fitness center. It includes 16 treatment rooms, men’s and women’s lounges, a whirlpool with a hot and cold dip, relaxation rooms, and a couple’s suite. Other amenities include a nail salon with multiple manicure and pedicure stations, a spa

lounge, retail space, and wellness center featuring TechnoGym equipment. For casual dining, venture to the Crescent Court’s complex and check out Moxie’s Bar & Grill restaurant, owned by Dallas owner and hockey fanatic, Tom Gaglardi. Every dish is house made with fresh local ingredients. While there’s plenty of exciting activities to fill your day, here are some of my favorite hot spots. Discover the best brewpub of the city, called BrainDead Brewing. Experience a Texas Rangers game, just for the fun of it. Explore the cultural side of Dallas in the iconic neighborhoods of Deep Ellum & The Dallas Arts District home to colorful street art. And learn more about the city at the Dallas Museum of Art. Dine at the exquisite and exclusive enclaves of The Crescent Club, that’s reserved for members and hotel guests only.

PERNOD RICARD’S 2018 CAPITAL MARKET DAY OVERVIEW By Hillary Latos

T

his summer, Pernod Ricard, the world’s second largest distiller after Diageo, held their annual Capital Market day in Shenzhen as their chairman and chief executive officer, Alexander Ricard wanted to embrace their growth strategy fueled by digitalization and reaching Asian millennials. To set the wheels in motion to double their Asian market share of the imported spirits sector by 2025, they launched a strategic partnership with tech giant Tencent Holdings last year. By tapping into Tencent’s vast consumer behavioral database Pernod has transformed itself to cater to the fast-changing marketplace of the growing middle class and millennials in China through product innovation, content creation and digitalization.

70 | resident.com

Pernod’s Asia business experienced an 11% growth overall last year, largely attributed to a robust performance of Martell in China— up 19%, and growth in India—up 14%. As part of their plan to achieve double-digit growth, their vision is to have Pernod Ricard brands involved in every day life for the growing middle to affluent classes—from dining at home to dining out, going out to nightclubs and KTV, to special occasions and gifting. In China, millennials represent 40% to 50% of luxury consumers with a higher spending ability than their predecessors. With the rise of the digital environment, especially among the highly impressionable millennials, consumer behaviors are becoming more sophisticated and individualistic. Entertainment

has become more influential in encouraging different drinking habits in China. Within this sector, e-commerce is one of the keys to growth for premium spirits brands to drive volume as brand awareness and consumer engagement increases. The largest social media platform in China is also owned by Tencent Holdings—where content is king. With over 1 billion users on WeChat, 98% of China’s netizens are on Tencent’s platforms and spend 56% of their online time within Tencent’s digital ecosystems, including mobile payments. This is 11 times that of the U.S. Within this closed loop of connected apps consumers can socialize within their group, play games, listen to music, watch news and digital entertain-

ment, read literature, shop, book medical appointments, and pay for everything they consume throughout their day in their onand offline life. This wealth of data collected by Tencent can empower brands to dig deep into consumer insights, detailing and categorizing their interests, demographics and ad behaviors, leading to purchases that effectively measure creation, communication and conversion. It’s what Tencent refers to as “social currency”—a ranking of consumers based on their social networks, apps and purchasing prowess. One of the biggest impediments to penetrating China that foreign companies face is the regional differences and consumption patterns among the different areas of China and age groups where one marketing campaign doesn’t fit all. However with Tencent’s digital profiling and research, Pernod Ricard has been able to determine customer preferences to create localized strategies based on regional differences to overcome this hurdle. Together Pernod Ricard and Tencent have developed innovative content to reach a broad audience to leverage their premium and prestige brands and bring them into the daily lives of Chinese consumers. To delve

into the meal culture and introduce Martell as a daily beverage with dinner they created the dining entertainment talk show, Dining Temptation, which had over 500 million views. Martell has a strong association with the party culture in China and has strong relationships with some of the biggest nightclubs and KTV establishments in Asia. To create a party culture online, they launched the “Martell Party Channel” which showed unexpected offline party experiences and explored the party culture with a party guide and party reporters to leverage their connection with the affluent classes in China. To reach Chinese millennials, Pernod Ricard and Tencent created digital platforms that tapped into Western sports and pop music culture. Ballantine’s Live Music Channel features a Trendy Music Live Show, that celebrates pop music, as well as a true music community that fosters up-and-coming talent. Since Absolut has its roots in pop culture, Absolut was a key sponsor of The Rap of China, a reality music competition show with a hip-hop format. One of the most popular shows in China, The Rap of China experienced a record-breaking 2.8 billion views over 12 episodes. And they also launched

the #Absolutnights campaign, encouraging Absolut consumption in the nightlife party culture. Because Tencent also owns the exclusive streaming rights for the NBA in China, Chivas has partnered with the NBA there to tap into shared IP resources, thus reaching a younger audience. Other initiatives to promote drinking within the social networking microcosms include social gifting and an A.I. chatbot within WeChat. For example, there’s a cocktail gift card that friends can buy for each within their WeChat network that is called “This one is on me.” As the burgeoning cocktail culture is growing in popularity in China, Pernod Ricard introduced Ask Jerry on WeChat. This hipster animated bearded bartender is an A.I. chatbot that acts as a virtual barman giving information about cocktails and nightlife, while also learning the preferences of its users. By using artificial intelligence to learn more about its users, brands can target the best platform to engage the user in a more effective way. And this is just the beginning of what’s to come. pernod-ricard.com

icons We have come a long way since January 2017; from acquiring the iconic Coscuez emerald mine in Colombia, to becoming the largest ruby land owner in the main ruby producing belt in Mozambique, to the strengthening of our management team, which has over 75 years of experience in the gemstone mining and marketing sector. Fura now has two solid operating platforms: rubies in Mozambique and emeralds in Colombia. Fura is going to stick to its core mission and continue to do what it knows best: the mining and marketing of colored gemstones, emeralds, rubies, and sapphires. We are not a vertically integrated business; we mine, grade, and sell rough gemstones. We do not and will never cut and polish these gemstones. Above all, we are an employee-friendly, sustainabilitydriven, community-centered enterprise. How important is the Coscuez Mine to Colombian culture? Coscuez has been producing emeralds for over 400 years. The history and the legacy of Coscuez is unparalleled; in a way, Coscuez is to Colombia what Kimberly is to South Africa.

FURA GEM By Lillian Langtry

H

ow did you get your start in the gemstone business? My personal journey into the gemstone business happened out of sheer coincidence. I graduated as a Chartered Accountant in India and moved to the United Kingdom to work for the world’s largest plastic tube manufacturing company. I had by then specialized in business turnaround, project management and start-ups. In 2007, I moved to London with the intention of taking a more stationary job with less travel requirements, and so I joined a start-up private equity house where my journey in colored gemstones really began. First, I became involved in the acquisition of the once-AIM-listed company Gemfields, which at the time had only one emerald operating mine in Zambia. In 2009, when Gemfields had financial trouble due to heavy losses and share-price had collapsed, the private equity house asked me to help turn around

72 | resident.com

the business. This is really when the colored gemstone sector became an integral part of my life and career. Between the key management team and I, we were not only successful in turning Gemfields’ business around, but we were able to build the world’s largest ruby mine in Mozambique and the world’s largest emerald mine in Zambia. I moved on from Gemfields in October 2016 and - in association with a Canadian private merchant bank, Forbes and Manhattan - launched Fura Gems. Stan Bharti, Chairman of Forbes and Manhattan wanted to enter the emerald mining business in Colombia and called me up for advice. It was a classic “meeting of minds” and we quickly decided to work together. Thus, Fura was born. Fura Gems Inc eventually became a TSX-V listed company, with the ticker FURA.V.

In the 1970s, Coscuez used to produce as much as 90% of all of Colombia’s emeralds, which translates to almost 50% of the world’s emeralds by value. Coscuez has produced some of the most iconic emeralds in Colombia’s history, including the Guinness emerald, a 1758 perfect emerald. Many of the Coscuez emeralds have been used by leading global brands and have been auctioned by some of the most famous auction houses in the world. What led to the closing of the mine? The mine was never closed; it was essentially reduced to a small-scale mine as a result of the green war. During this time, people just went and dug tunnels wherever they thought they could smell emeralds. There was no science behind it. People just thought they would dig tunnels and get emeralds. However, this strategy didn’t work; people didn’t find emeralds, and that led to a massive slowdown. At Fura, we saw an opportunity to bring the mine back to its former glory, but in a vastly more organized and ethical manner. We intend to develop this historic mine, and we believe Coscuez will ultimately become one of the world’s largest emerald-producing mines. Out of the near 50 mines in Colombia, why reopen the Coscuez mine? As I mentioned, the history of Coscuez is unparalleled. Our chief geologist believes that although the mine has been producing for over 400 years, it has barely been scratched on the surface, and the main resource is still very much there. According to our research,

this mine will continue to produce, at a minimum, for the next 25 years, with the potential to extend that time frame much further. It is simply next to impossible to find a colored gemstone mine like Coscuez. We are very proud to say that we have immense support from the community in which we operate, which provides us the ability to operate in a completely open, transparent environment. Our Corporate Social Responsibility strategy, along with our continuous engagement with the community, provides us a work environment that is thankfully peaceful and supported by community residents. Additionally, the Colombian government and the Mining Agency in Colombia, including local authorities, have been very supportive of the initiatives that we have taken thus far. Given our emphasis on building an above-all ethical mining and marketing company, we have done comprehensive background checks of our local partners. Also, with our status as a listed company, we are governed by the highest level of corporate governance and we regularly ensure that all statutory requirements are met. As Coscuez has ticked all the boxes that we need to build an ethical, longterm sustainable model, we decided to work with this mine. We acquired 76% interest in the mine, with the balance held by our local partner. Has the reopening of the mine had an impact on the Columbian workforce at all? If so, how? It has certainly had a very positive impact. In the short nine months since we concluded the agreement, we have a work force of around 250 people at Coscuez, and 242 of them are local Colombians. Each of our employees has proper work contracts,

are paid salaries, and get all employment benefits, including insurance, pensions, and others. We also provide our employees comprehensive training on health and safety and ensure that this training takes place at regular intervals, so that they remain upto-date with all health and safety rules. As we grow our business, our work force will increase, and we will always strive to retain a large percentage of Colombia employees in our workforce. How important is tourism for Colombia? Tourism is important for every country. Happy tourists become de facto brand ambassadors for the counties they visit. Colombia in particular is a blessed country. It is geographically beautiful, of course, with its vast mountains and oceans. But the real strength of the country is its people, who are remarkably welcoming, warm, and friendly. Unfortunately, there remain some negative attitudes in the West about Colombia regarding its safety, due to its history. However, these attitudes are now false, and misleading. The country is currently going through a highly positive transformation, and we are quite confident that the number of tourists to Colombia will grow rapidly over the coming years.

be able to increase the production in Coscuez. As production increases, the consumption level will increase as well. We will also be marketing our products both at the trade level and at the consumer level. This will help build up the knowledge of and demand for the category. The demand is already there; we just need the supply. From Hollywood to Bollywood, from business people to corporate executives, the Colombian emerald remains one of the most highly desired products among gemstone collectors and enthusiasts. Why is it important to you that people experience the beauty of Colombia? Colombia is the hidden jewel of South America. People have avoided visiting the country because of its past legacy. But that is firmly in the past. We are now seeing the emergence of a new Colombia, which is evolving with each passing day. The country is quickly becoming a center for arts, fashion, artisanal coffee, emeralds, and so much more. Visitors should really come and witness the evolution of the country for themselves.

What sort of decline did Colombia’s emerald trade see due to the war? How do you hope to bring the trade back to prominence? We understand that Colombia at its peak used to produce about 10 million carats of emeralds, with an export value of about $500 to 600 million. That has dropped to about 2 million carats now, with a value of about $250 million.

What steps are you and Fura taking to help Colombia rise as a leader in tourism and business? Fura’s marketing and public relations campaign will continue to promote its countries of origin in a big way. Fura has already promoted Colombia tourism through its social media platforms, including its local events, people, communities and more. We hope to ramp up our global PR campaign in the months to come. We also plan to bring influential journalists to Colombia to give them a first-hand experience of the country, its people, its culture, its emeralds, and its fantastic tourist destinations.

We hope with modern, large-scale mining we will

TERRY DOE In the Thick of It By Hillary Puckett

T

o those with an intimate knowledge of the publicist, writer, and (former) actor Terry Doe, he is the kind of skilled artistic acrobat that comes along only rarely; the kind that vehemently believes in studying all the rules, in order to arrive at the glory of breaking, or in actual fact, recreating them. Speak to anyone who knew him before 2013, and you will learn of the renegade, spontaneous, and always entertaining and sprightly - yet thoughtful - young classical musician who grew up as a member the once internationally renowned Boys Choir Of Harlem (BCH), and was a soloist performing at some of the leading stages - and with the best orchestra’s - around the world. Share a discourse with another person, and you will be surprised that the classically trained actor was at one time considered a “rising star” after an acclaimed performance in Jason Robert Brown’s racially charged musical Parade. He was also a one-time member of the National Theatre Of Great Britain, and other leading English theatres including Sheffield Theatres, The Barbican, and Chichester Festival (where he was seen in Shakespeare’s Antony & Cleopatra with Sex And The City star, Kim Cattrall, under the direction of the great Oscar-nominated actress and director Janet Suzman, a former mentor). Once proclaimed by London’s Guardian Newspaper as giving “a shiverdown-the-spine performance”, Doe, who spouts Shakespeare sonnets as if taking a breath, and considers The Bard, James Baldwin, and Ian McEwan three of the greatest contemporary writers of the human condition (“I think Shakespeare is very much a contemporary writer; even more so than some of todays writer’s”), is now regarded as a notable and recognized publicist with a varied client roster spanning artists & art galleries, fashion brands, musical organizations, influencer’s, beauty, hospitality, and some of the best parties and events. When I meet with Doe, he is in the process of creating a pitch for an indemand international DJ/Poet/artist for an already confirmed magazine feature (confirmed previously because he simply made a call; the pitch is a formality). He recites the pitch aloud whilst furiously typing as if that itself is an art form, ultimately composing a symphony rich in vocabulary, yet playful enough to suit his fascinating multi-hyphenate client. Throughout his tenure as Publicity Director at Seventh House PR (now transitioning into an independent publicist to a collective of innovative artists and creators), Terry has demonstrated a genuine, tireless dedication to achieving results. Each day, he eagerly and vigorously sets about the arduous work of elevating his clients.

and exciting project. This is what I am fulfilled by; the fact that I can be a part of a greater process to build, grow, and stabilize a brand that deserves to be recognized.” Doe’s loyalty and commitment to his clients shine through in his work ethic and dedication to achieving goals. “It is extremely rewarding when one puts in the work; and even more so when the results of that work begin to blossom”. His clients are, in fact, the first to praise his commitment and devotion to them. “Terry gets things done so quickly and beautifully”, says the renowned international artist Judi Harvest. “It’s such a pleasure to work with him.” And what about his earlier life as a choirboy? “I had great mentors who taught us never to give up.” After a brief pause, Doe emphatically bursts out, “As an African boy living within the African American experience, the choir guided my position as an individual and a person with my own unique and beautiful characteristics; but also as a man of the world. I become immersed in classical music because of BCH, and I learned

that aside from being a little black boy, I was indeed a member of the human community, this world. It taught me diligence, hard work. They taught me that although sometimes others may see only the surface, it was my responsibility to remain steadfast, determined and within my power in the pursuit of becoming a contributory member of society. This passion also instilled in him a deep sense of responsibility, and Doe is an ardent supporter of human rights. “I believe that we as a human race have a responsibility to each other; that it is our God-given responsibility to lift each other up. We must better each other, and in doing so, we better the world at large. I believe everyone is afforded basic human rights, including the right and privilege to be and live free. Free to love whom you wish, be who you are; without judgment, persecution, alienation, or ridicule. We have a right to privacy. It frightens me sometimes when I think of how much our lives are being stolen from us. We have a right to be at home, and feel safe. I believe in a borderless world. You are probably thinking, “You say that because you

are an immigrant?” Yes, I do! I believe each of us has a God-given right to seek out opportunities that will not only better ourselves, but will also better the communities in which we are in. We are all able to make better our surrounding and our communities; we simply have to be provided the opportunity and the guidance. I believe in the Human Rights Campaign. I believe in the United Nations, and I believe in the Commonwealth of Nations.” Always loyal, and with a fortitude and rigorous determination to always achieve the best for his clients, Doe’s says his life can be described by a saying he learned from one of his mentors, the great voice teacher, Patsy Rodenburg: JUST DO THE WORK. His list of client’s and collaborators certainly consider this a virtue, and are even more encouraged by his steadfast commitment to always putting them first and foremost. terry@terrydoe.com instagram @telledoe

World’s largest auction Another Guernsey’s highlight was the sale of the contents of the SS United States, a once glorious ocean liner, in what today still stands as the world’s largest auction. The ship was to undergo renovation, and Ettinger suggested the owners auction everything instead of hauling it away. The owners went to the biggest houses, Sotheby’s and Christie’s; both declined the complicated project, saying it would take ten years to prepare the sale. They gave Guernsey’s three months to catalogue and dismantle everything, and they finished on time. Rosa Parks archive: More recently, Guernsey’s handled the sale of the complete archive of the civil rights activist Rosa Parks, which Ettinger believes is the most important thing he has ever done.

ARLAN ETTINGER Guernsey’s Auction House By Bennett Marcus

E

lvis, JFK & Princess Diana Arlan Ettinger and his wife Barbara Mintz opened Guernsey’s in 1975, and have built it into one of the top auction houses in the U.S., pulling in big numbers at some of modern history’s most extraordinary sales.

Early breakthrough: carousel horses A few years after they opened, a man desperate to raise $30,000 for his daughter’s hospital bills asked them to sell carousel horses from defunct merrygo-rounds. Ettinger found that the beautifully carved wooden horses were being discarded.

“We did all three of the John F. Kennedy auctions, sold the Franklin Roosevelt archive, and sold Princess Diana’s jewelry, the only such sale that’s ever taken place,” says Ettinger. They handled the Graceland auction for the family of Elvis Presley, as well as auctions for the Beatles, Dick Clark, Mickey Mantle and Duke Ellington.

NBC’s “Today Show” brought several of these figures onto the set. “That was the very first time any auction was featured on network television.” Plus, from that moment carousel horses became treasured items and are now preserved in museums, including the Smithsonian. The sale brought $1 million. “A million dollars for these things that were being thrown out was an eye-opener,” Ettinger says

Parks’s will was subject to a dispute, and Guernsey’s was brought in to take an inventory and find a permanent home for her possessions. “We discovered she was a pack rat in the nicest sense of the word, she had saved everything,” says Ettinger. “Her writings showed that she was hardly just a little lady who one day impulsively didn’t give up her seat on a bus. She was mapping out a strategy, starting at around age 12, determined to make a difference and rid the world of some of the injustice that she saw around her.” Many institutions wanted the collection, but were unable to offer a reasonable price, so it sat in storage. Ettinger eventually turned to the media, saying the archive should be available to the public. The AP picked up the story, and the Howard G, Buffett Foundation acquired the archive, and later gifted it to the Library of Congress. “It recently has been described as possibly the most important body of material in the Library of Congress, which contains, I believe, more than 120 million objects,” Ettinger says. “They cited this as the most important items in the Library of Congress, and to think that it had been in our possession for some years.” guernseys.com

ELIZABETH MELENDEZ FISHER Co-Founder of the Selah Way Foundation By w.a. muller

H

ow did you get involved with Selah Freedom? I was part of a women’s event and was simply looking for a beneficiary. My goal was to find a true underdog. When I learned that our own American kids are being sexually abused, running away and ending up on the streets being sold for sex, I was horrified! After learning about sex trafficking I asked, “Who can we write a check to?” I was told that no one was doing anything about it. To make a long story short, Selah Freedom was birthed.

about sex trafficking and the work you do. Childhood sexual abuse is an epidemic and I hope the message resonates that we are trying to be major interrupters. We are bringing solutions to protect our own children from abuse and exploitation. People are just starting to understand the link of sex trafficking and childhood sexual abuse. Education and awareness is crucial. The Selah Way Foundation

When my co-founders and I launched Selah Freedom, we knew it would change lives. Today, it is viewed as the premiere organization setting the standards and measurements to truly impact sex trafficking. At the same time, we had the vision that we would launch another foundation to be the vetted place to give to the overall movement to impact domestic sex trafficking. We get calls monthly asking us to train or take over programs that can’t successfully steward the assets that have been given to them. That is the why behind The Selah Way Foundation, greater impact uniting the best and guaranteeing results! Where you have launched? The Selah Way Foundation is covering the entire map. We have strong hubs from LA, Chicago, D.C., NY and all the way to Florida with markets in between. Why isn’t this a bigger topic? Unfortunately, America has been trained to turn a blind eye. Our culture has normalized the idea that girls in pornography, strip clubs and escort services are there by choice. More upsetting is the fact that the men who go there, think they are doing them a favor. What they don’t realize is that there is a pathway that led a girl there. As a police officer once told me, “People call this the oldest profession, but the reality is, it’s the oldest story of abuse.” It was enlightening listening to you and your partners speak

82 | resident.com

years. Most would rather keep their abuse buried then bring it to the surface because they are afraid of not being believed or other consequences. Thanks to the #MeToo movement, voices are final being heard and secrets are coming to light. Where is Selah Freedom headed? Selah Freedom plays an integral role together with the many partners under the vetted Selah Way Foundation. We are currently launching the 7 vetted partners under one strong network. In 10 years, my goal is to grow the network to $250 million strong and to have hundreds of thousands of children saved and abuse prevented. We will also be doing live webinars every two weeks for those who are interested in supporting the movement. I believe that we can reach millions of at-risk precious children through our Prevention Program. We will be able to intervene and shut down the horrific cycle of abuse and trafficking. The goal is to have the prevention and law enforcement arms of the foundation grow so strong that we can no longer need the safe home roles that Selah Freedom provides. Our goal is to put ourselves out of business! Will Andy Adler (PIX 11) and Tony Richardson (NFL Legend) be taking a larger advocating role? Tony and Andy are amazing Selah Way Foundation Ambassadors and we are beyond grateful. We are definitely focusing on our ambassador outreach and have many interested in supporting our mission.

has the best organizations in the country. In addition to our affiliates, the foundation has the FBI and US Attorney’s Office collaborating and sharing resources and strategies to create change and save lives. How do these children keep such dark secrets? Speaking as a survivor of childhood sexual abuse, I know that shame and confusion silences you for

What would you tell your 8-year old self ? I would tell my 8-year old self to trust your gut. If anything makes you feel uncomfortable, say something immediately. Never carry a secret because the worst things build out of a secret. There is a saying, “that which happens in the dark, stays in the dark and continues to grow, but once it comes to the light, it ceases.” This is so true! selahfreedom.com

ART Fur Jacket: Son Jun Wan

GEORGES BERGÈS New York’s Maverick Gallerist By christopher a. pape

F

rom the standpoint of a rank amateur, art collecting seems like a gladiatorial sport. From who’s in to who’s out, from the déclassé to the divine, it is hard for a beginner (or even in most cases, a more experienced collector) to know the difference. Many throw away money, in an attempt to achieve some sort of ambiguous art epiphany that most likely will never come to fruition or in a more crude ambition collect for investment purposes. Whatever the case may be, the art world is a scary place —full of snobbery, pretension and condescension and worse still, rip-offs, thieves and imposters.

So what to do? Give up completely? If that were the case, there would be no da Vinci or Michelangelo. No, rather, you must find someone —an art representative or gallerist —you can trust. Someone rooted to the community, understanding of your needs; while still maintaining a connection to the pulse of what’s hot and what’s not. Someone who is not afraid to venture to the “Bushwick” of Mexico City or Shanghai. Someone who is down-to-earth, but with an affinity for the whimsy.

rigorous requirements. His name is Georges Bergès and we at RESIDENT are honored to have interviewed him. I believe the interview that follows is a reflection of his deep understanding of art, his passion for collection and his humanity and humility for both his artists and his clients. I hope you enjoy the piece as much as I enjoyed interviewing him!

ART

90 | resident.com

Tell us a little bit about your background I was born and raised in California and spent some time living in Alaska during my undergraduate years. Before finally settling in New York City, I traveled extensively all over the world. I am a child of immigrant parents so I always apply a very global perspective to everything. Perhaps this is one of the reasons why I have always gravitated towards a more globalized exploration of previously overlooked art and artists—I used to always say that I want to go to the “Bushwick” of Johannesburg, Mexico City, and Shanghai —I have generally been less interested in the usual centers of art. And now that I think about it, I suppose this is also a reason why I take a more “romantic view” of the art world and practice a more person-centered approach when working with my artists and collectors. I am naturally a people person. I love learning about different cultures and life experiences and genuinely enjoy spending quality time in conversation with artists and collectors from all over the world. You’re not a native of New York, why here? New York City is special. This is a place where history feels and weighs-in like nowhere else. My excitement and romanticizing of 1980’s New York City history, and of a future filled with possibilities, created such intense feelings in me that I couldn’t be anywhere else. I could have thrived somewhere else but I believe that the life I am living now, and which I love, could not have happened anywhere else —I owe everything to New York City. It has given me so much. In a way, my gallery and daily work are homages to this great city. How do you pick the artists that are featured in your gallery? I am often asked this question. The best way I can

answer it is by saying that I only work with artists that I love. When selecting an artist, I usually ask myself three questions. First, do I like the work? And if I do, then I try to figure out if I feel that by working with the artist I can take him or her to the next level in his or her artistic development and career. If not, then I may just become a collector of the work. If I see the possibility of a working relationship, then I move to the final and most important question, which is, do I like who the artist is as a person? In many ways, the art world is adversarial and tough. For this reason, it is important that there is a genuine connection between the artist and me. Trust is key. If a connection is not there, then it won’t work for me. There have been times when I have gone out with a potential artist and spent weeks talking to him or her about many different things before we even got into the art. I see, experience, and sell art from a very personal inner space—and I love what I do, precisely because I surround myself with people that I admire at a human level; people whom I genuinely feel that when the chips are down or a storm is raging, we can lean on each other. In today’s world this is very difficult for a gallerist to build, but what I do is not separate from who I am. This is my life and, especially because of how I work, if I bring an artist into the gallery, then I am bringing a real human being into my life, with all of his or her complexities. I think my artists appreciate my approach and I have certainly become a better and more complete person and gallerist because of it. I always tell my collectors, “I don’t sell art. I sell my artist” – which I think explains it all. Why did you choose SoHo for your gallery?

You know, this is a question that I am very frequently asked. Initially, I never planned for or desired a gallery. I just wanted to represent and work with artists and do secondary market. But I quickly realized that my artists and collectors would be better served if I had a space to hold exhibits — especially for large sculptural pieces like those of Kristin Jai Klosterman. So right away, I decided that if I were to open a gallery, then it had to be a space that was meaningful to me and with some sort of significance to the art world. This place was and still is SoHo. For example, the work of Leo Castelli has been one of the most influential and impactful on my life as a gallerist and art dealer. Castelli had a gallery right here in SoHo at a time when so much of what we consider to be the “contemporary art movement” in America was taking place. There is clearly a legacy component to SoHo. Today SoHo is very different and much has changed, so it would probably seem counterintuitive to not go to Chelsea or somewhere in Brooklyn, but history and legacy became, and still are, more important to me. And although I have always been a bit idealistic and romantic about the art world, I objectively think it’s important to be here. Working with artists and selling art today have taken a very transactional and corporate feel--and I think this is wrong. I feel that this is a reason why so many people in the art world seem so unhappy. Selling a piece of art —which to me encapsulates so much, like the creative energy and hard work of the artist and gallerist, for example, should not be like selling any other goods. Art is special. Art is transformative, both for the artist and the collector alike, but somewhere along the road this was forgotten or ignored. So despite what the experts said, I decided

resident.com | 91

ART

to open here, in a place that still holds so much of the spirit of old New York. I also wanted a space that was impressive. So many emerging or mid-level artists can only be shown in small gallery spaces because of their price point and the risk that the gallerist has to take on them. I wanted to make sure that if I were to show important emerging artists, then it had to be in a place that did justice to their work. Don’t get me wrong; it has not been easy. It has been one of the most difficult things that I’ve ever done. I feel I’ve aged a lot since opening almost 4 years ago —but it’s a labor of love and at this point, I can’t stop —the sky is the limit. What’s the horizon in the next 6-12 months? I am always involved in projects and the gestation of new ideas. This fall we will be opening with Ben Birillo —who, in my opinion, is one of the most important and influential living figures in the art world today. I’ll even go on a limb and say that without Birillo, Pop Art, as we know it today, would not have existed. Ben has been called both the “Progenitor of Pop” and “Mr. Pop Art.” He was a major force in the establishment and legitimization of Pop Art as real art both in the United States and abroad. He has been making significant contributions to the art world for over seventy years. Ben is best known as the mastermind behind The American Supermarket, a landmark exhibition widely credited with placing Pop Art on the map. The show celebrated the spectacle of consumption during the postwar years. Birillo commissioned his friends and colleagues

92 | resident.com

to create additional objects for the show. When it opened in 1964, The American Supermarket included artworks by Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Richard Artschwager, Tom Wesselmann, Claes Oldenburg, and Billy Apple. Ben is a true visionary and innovator - a kindred spirit —I am inspired by him. Ben’s solo show is also very special to me because of his shared friendship and meaningful connection with Leo Castelli. Both were of the same mind when it came to recognizing great art and talent. I often draw inspiration from Castelli’s work and legacy. I see him as an example to follow when making decisions related to the gallery. In 1964, Leo Castelli saw that Ben Birillo was talented and strongly encouraged him to produce The American Supermarket. Presumably, Ben probably wouldn’t have done it without Castelli’s persuasion. It turned out to be a groundbreaking show. Now, here I am in 2018, and after more than a year and a half of working with Ben, we are finally ready to present Spirit Dogs, his very first solo show in almost twenty years—the exhibition runs through early October. I couldn’t be more excited! What are the biggest challenges being an owner of a gallery? When I first opened, I was a wide-eyed innocent regarding what I was about to embark on. My singular focus was to have an artist-centered gallery. I took risks and brought to light artists that I intuitively felt were too important to not be shown. I never took into account the logistics of actually running

a gallery. Admittedly, the first few years were very tough —there was a litany of issues like the exorbitant rent, staffing challenges, and many of the other things that any NYC gallerist similarly experiences and complaints about. But I have always kept my eye on the ball. I didn’t want anything to decrease my motivation or to distract me from the goal that originally inspired me to take this journey. I truly believe that in the same way an artist is born into the “artistic life,” so is the art dealer born to live the “art dealer’s life.” You have to be born for this because it is not easy. It is very difficult to sustain. You need to love it. You need to be made for this. I live and breathe this life. I can’t think of a moment when I am not working, although it never feels like work. I have been known to send a flurry of emails in the middle of the night, overnight. I suffer from insomnia--I give birth to some of my best ideas for projects and exhibitions late at night. I have even found myself reviewing artists’ work and corresponding at 2 or 3 in morning. While I always feel that the soul of the gallery comes from my artists and the exhibitions we put together, I wanted to be in SoHo because so much of what we love about art today came from these streets. Yes, time changes and people move on, but it is important to have at least one space that serves and honors the spirit of the New York City we all love —the New York of Leo Castelli, Warhol, and Basquiat. bergesgallery.com

OUSSAMAH GHANDOUR Nurture Within Nature By terry doe

T

he international multidisciplinary abstract artist Oussamah Ghandour has in recent months become somewhat of a household name in the art world. Sought after and recognized as an artist of immensely varied and deeply coded works that instantly draws the viewer in, begging to be deciphered —a collaboration between the viewer and the work - Ghandour, a tall, dark, and strikingly handsome gentleman (one wonders why

he has not yet been tapped for the runway), with eyes as focused and as sharp as a piece of steel cutting right through the soul of everything he studies, Ghandour is a virtuoso at taking the literal and re-inventing it into some of the most majestic, vibrant, and potently abstract works of any contemporary artist today. “My subconscious is much more articulate than I am,” says the artist. “I do my part in experiencing life, and when I

paint, I don’t try to control the outcome of the piece.” Born in Lebanon in 1978, Ghandour’s journey as an artist recalls him as a young boy in war-torn Lebanon, within a setting of bloodshed and hatred. Ghandour’s boy-self could be forgiven were he to have developed a cold, reclusive and wary persona while he explored the mysteries of nature and the

heart – two prevalent themes throughout his artwork; yet this inquisitive young boy saw in that world a warmth, truth, the beauty of his surroundings, and its direct and resolute impact on the nurturing of the heart, the soul. For the young Ghandour, nature was a direct result of nurture. Even amid a, dare one say, “picturesque” frame depicting military officers, machine guns, collapsed homes laden with debris, and depravity. No, this boy artist, full of spirit and a need to expose exquisite beauty in all its forms, picked up a brush and began to paint. His newly established world was a peek into what can happen when dark and light emerge as one. When asked what fascinates and draws him to his constant excavation of light versus dark, Ghandour responds, “The magic is in the subtlety. It could easily be missed. But what’s the fun of it if everyone can see it.” After studying Liberals Arts with a focus on Visual Arts at York University in Toronto - coupled with a degree in graphic design and communication from the Academy of Design – Ghandour initially chose “the professional world,” working in design.

“It influenced my work in a tremendous way,” says Ghandour. “Firstly, from the design perspective, I find myself sensitive to space and environment. So when I’m looking at the blank canvas, I’m able to see connections in design that will balance the painting.” But the artist within him never strayed far. He continued painting as a hobby. “The way I interpret my art is that each medium I use is always a continuation of the story. That’s why when I interrupt a sketch into a painting, it doesn’t necessarily have to look the same, because from there I’m documenting from that subject. When I’m finished with the painting, the story isn’t over yet; I take a photograph of the painting and take it into a digital realm and graphically continue the story. It’s interesting to me because when I paint, I shut my brain off as much as possible and depend on my instinct and intuition. When I work on the paintings digitally, I start analyzing closer, thereby building on an existing emotion.” Art, it seems, is the nature of Ghandour, naturally devoting himself to living, breathing, painting, and sketching full time. Ghandour’s creative and instinctive universe is a pure sensorial experience. His abstract works recall

his memories and emotions - perhaps of his boyhood past – and provide a glimpse into his past experiences, many travels (he has lived in Riyadh, Doha, Nice, Toronto, Beirut, and Dubai before finally settling in Brooklyn, NY) and emotional self. “My environment is my inspiration. Nature, people, situations, conversations,” he exclaims. “I usually carry a sketchbook everywhere I go. Thoughts ignite my imagination, which turns into sketches and paintings.” His diverse paintings and sketches mirror many universal human conditions. “I document the subtleties of the experiences of emotions: not just in humans but my impressions left behind.” They illustrate rich narratives full of depth and pathos - in vibrant, vivid detail - as if carrying a soundtrack of their own. “I like to work on two paintings at the same time. It allows me to extract pure expression, one that is subconscious and another that is cerebral. I usually know I’m finished when the image is just about to be defined; AMBIGUOUS enough to allow the mind to create multiple stories on the same subject matter.” For this visceral artist, every minute counts, and every second is an opportunity gained or lost.

ART

Unsurprisingly, many of Ghandour’s paintings show the artist continually exploring, sometimes with somewhat unusual materials. “If I have to say anything, it would be that I have a free hand. Not bounded by formalized rules. One of the obligations for an artist is to always discover and challenge ourselves, trust in the intuition and enter into the visible unknown; always coming out with a deepened and transformative discovery; that’s the obligation of the artist.” He uses asphalt as his foundation, and tar to seal all the cracks. Even living, breathing life forms have sometimes found themselves excavating his canvas with their lifeblood. His 2017 drawing, Fire In The Circle, involved the squeezing and smearing of a dead Beetle. When I ask him about this, he emphatically declares, “ I find it very interesting to decipher and excavate the known, and even more revelatory to uncover what is darkly visible.” That’s why I always strive for truth in expression and having a free hand, a free spirit. Freedom is paramount for art and for the living. Mental. Physical. Societal. Familial. The combination of my environment, intuition, and natural forces of the universe documenting, sometimes hypothesizing on this with a free and unrestricted mind and body; an inclusive heart has been my biggest education thus far.”

100 | resident.com

Perusing the bold, broad strokes of Ghandour’s abstract painting and sketches, one is unmistakably struck by the fact that this artist is on a singular journey - defiant of all conventional, obstructive ideologies in form and structure. No, this artist prefers instead to free himself and delve proudly and unabashedly into the soul. He takes you on a journey of what it truly is to have an out of body experience, or rather, a totally in the body experience. When asked what the meaning and language is behind much of this abstract work, his answer is not surprisingly a searching in and of itself: “The meaning behind the work is hard to place because I’m forever searching for meaning in everything. But every painting presents more sets of questions. I like to think that the language of my work is a universal poetry carried over from situations, conversations, experiences, gains, losses, questions, observations, awakenings, and resolutions.” This statement is enough to make any human question, what is the meaning of one’s existence! They say art is a subjective experience, but I begin to learn that this unassuming, soft-spoken, yet astonishingly self-aware artist is also something of a shaman; a truth teller, and flag-bearer for the brightly ringing day and the deadening of dawn.

By the end of a viewing of Ghandour’s works, one is likely to be left dumbfounded by who the deeply intuitive artist Ghandour is; and that is evident in each painting or sketch, he is a man who (by his very nature,) never forgets a single beat or moment. Even more so, he never lets you, the voyeur, forget that each stroke that your eye glances, each moment, is the single most important thing to have occurred in your life. When I ask Ghandour – whose works have been exhibited at Christie’s, Lebanese Consulate of Art, Whitebox Arts Center, Bushwick Open Studios, and Art Love – where he would like to see his work showcased next. His quick-witted, joking reply is every bit as flamboyant, yet deeply grounded as some of his paintings: “Well, the Whitney wants to host my first retrospective, which is odd because I’m only forty. And, I’m contemplating an extravagant show at Soane’s Museum in London. They could use an upstart, you know. Ha-ha! But seriously, I do love those museums nearly as much as I love dreaming; so you see, the sky’s the limit.”

THE SALT QUEEN At Home With Pioneering Artist Bettina Werner By angela noelle

T

he story of the pioneering Milan born, American visual artist Bettina Werner - known internationally as The Salt Queen - is an inspirational narrative of a formidable young woman’s lone journey from Italy to the Island of Manhattan, and her revolutionary invention of a new art form, creating work with salt crystals. Described by one of her Italian collectors as “bringing her special gifts to the new land with the only thing that remains on our bodies when we have little else but the salt on the skin”, Werner, a graduate of the prestigious Brera Academy Of Fine Arts in Milan, arrived in NYC in 1989. She shortly thereafter made a mark in the art world with her creation of a textured, colorized salt crystal technique, invented in the early 1980’s. This invention established her as one of the leading artists of the 20th century, and to this day, still represents a significant milestone in the international art community. Bettina Werner’s innovative work with salt - encompassing original, creative uses of color and multi-textured grains of radiant rock salt crystal mines from Sicily and Puglia - has been exhibited in some of the most prestigious museums and collections across the globe. The Whitney in NY, the Pushkin in Moscow, the Triennale in Milan, as well as galleries including Marisa Del Re Gallery in Manhattan, and notable venues like Tiffany & Co. have all housed some of Werner’s significant artwork. She is the first European artist to be included in the Herbert and Dorothy Vogel Art Collection, the largest and most famous art collection in the US. “Salt was used by the Egyptians for burial, by the Catholics for baptisms, by the Hindus for weddings, and as a seasoning for food,” says Werner. “It was also used as a preservative. Its balance is vital to our very life’s force, and is dependent on the balance of 75 million cells in our bodies.” For over ten year’s, the distinguished artist has called Manhattan’s Financial District home, since establishing

her iconic art-loft across the street from the New York Stock Exchange in the Starck Building, itself renowned for its rich history and a particularly spectacular drooping chandelier. Surrounded by some of histories greatest moments (Washington took the oath of office as the first President of the US) and iconic buildings including 23 Wall Street (former office of J.P. Morgan), Federal Hall, the first Supreme Court, and the former US Sub-Treasury, Werner’s art-filled loft in the luxury building, originally built in 1914, is every bit as charming and rich in history as the buildings surrounding it. With a 5,000 square foot rooftop park, complete with a pool and lounge area, the building also boasts a winter fireplace directly across from the NYSE. “Do you know that salt used to be currency,” exclaims the artist. “In Ancient times, salt was a symbol of

prosperity. This is where the word salarium, meaning, salary, comes from.” On entering Werner’s art-loft, one is immediately taken in by the beautiful, vast open space of the living area, with windows directly overlooking the NYSE. A magnificent salt crystal backgammon table, a sculptural art piece created by the artist which doubles as a dining table, is the centerpiece in the loft, surrounded by some of her most remarkable art collection. “Salt is More Precious than Gold! As Homer relates, salt stands higher above the ordinary human view point!”

contributions have included an exhibition on all four floors of the opulent Down Town Association Clubhouse, one of NY’s finest examples of Romanesque Revival design (as well as the second oldest building in the US). Not least, the artist also held a 25 year Art Retrospective at 7 World Trade Center overlooking Ground Zero, an exhibit that represented a crowning career achievement. Her impact on this Wall Street neighborhood is no doubt deeply felt. Simply visit Delmonico’s, America’s first premiere steakhouse established in 1837, or stop by BMW of Manhattan. You will find someone there to tell you of the magnificent Salt Queen.

Throughout her residency in this otherwise solely financial community, Werner has been a staunch advocate for revitalizing the arts. Her numerous

an Eldon’s richly layered collages and haunting photos of famine and war in Somalia have inspired individuals around the world since his death in 1993. Now, 25 years later, HG Contemporary, in collaboration with Creative Visions and Trotta-Bono Contemporary, will honor Eldon’s legacy with a one-of-a-kind exhibition, presenting 19 of the artist’s limited edition prints alongside a number of works from three artists who were directly influenced by Eldon’s life and mission. The exhibit opens on September 6th and runs through October 1st.

104 | resident.com

Dan Eldon was born in England, but moved to Kenya at the age of seven with his British father and American mother. His intimate connection to Africa and extensive travels (to 46 countries) provided rich content for the artist. Eldon captured these experiences in a collection of 17 bulging journals, packed with drawings, photographs and ephemera. In 1991, Eldon, 22, was the first to create awareness of a famine in Somalia, and his photos helped trigger an international relief mission, Operation Restore Hope. The international efforts saved the lives of hundreds of thousands of starving Somalis.

For the next year, Eldon returned to Somalia as the youngest photojournalist for Reuters. Eldon documented the descent of the country into a bloody civil war for global outlets including Time, Newsweek and international newspapers. On July 12th, 1993, a misguided US-lead attack on a house where a warlord was reportedly hiding left more than 200 Somalis dead or wounded. Survivors rushed to the journalists’ hotel to beg them to film the carnage. In the ensuing chaos, Eldon and three of his colleagues were beaten or stoned to death by an angry mob. Soon after, Eldon’s family discovered his journals.

HILDEGARDE HANDSAEME Redefines The Human Form By w. a. muller

T

ell us how you got into art? When I was about 6 years old, I saw the work of Picasso for the first time and found it breathtaking! I could look at his line drawings for hours, was full of admiration for how he created an entire drawing with a simple line, leaving behind the unnecessary—dissecting figures, and then putting them back together in a dissociative way. I found his use of color fantastic and his addition of ornamentation brilliant. It kept fascinating me. At

106 | resident.com

the age of 16, I was in the same class as the son of a local artist and I always thought of what must his father be—a happy man! Much later, when I was 32 years old, I created two big drawings out of boredom; at that time I was alone at home. Of course, I did not think they were good and certainly not presentable to the world. My husband found the drawings and presented them to a friend who had studied plastic arts. She

could appreciate the works and advised me to continue. I started taking classes at the Academy of Visual Arts in Overijse. After a while I had an exhibition where I was noticed by an “Eminence Grise” in the art world who advised me not to continue at the academy. He claimed that my style would be destroyed. He said I had a special way of drawing and also that I had a perfect balance of color distribution. He was amazed that I had developed my own style so early and that this only occurs with

very gifted artists. He let me know that my style would evolve and today I am no longer asked to sign my work as it is so recognizable. My first exhibition outside of the academy was a great success. And so I continue... Where did you study? At the Academy of Visual Arts in Overijse. I followed that by taking drawing lessons for four years and then moved on to painting. On the advice of the “Eminence Grise” I stopped after four years of drawing and I concentrated on painting. What are your inspirations? My inspiration comes from myself. My ideas begin by drawing a line and then creating the image of a woman. But I want to distance myself from the realistic images of women; it has become a game to find new curves and to embellish them. This creates something completely new, recognizable yet abstract. A woman’s image offers through her

curves so many possibilities that it is always exciting to display them in a new way.. The lines develop further into a harmonious entity and balancing the right colors is a quest that brings great satisfaction. I never work with a model. This way of working also extends to animals, musical instruments and certainly when I can add a feminine touch. What form of painting/drawing would you say your art is? I cannot immediately say under which art form my work fits ... It is my personal style that is very recognizable, But it is not tied to any particular art movement. Who are your clients? Have you done many art shows? To my surprise, my clients are mostly doctors, professors at the university, architects, CEOs of companies, and the like and from all over the world.I have a whole list of exhibitions that I’ve shown my art work both in my own country and elsewhere in Europe.

What is your next series? Which series are you the most proud of ? I cannot answer that question. I do not work in a series ... I make drawings and paintings according to a pattern that makes me feel good. I am always searching for a complete balance and harmony that does not yet exist. And this is in terms of drawing and painting. The challenge of something new! And to be happy in creating! Which artists inspire you the most? In fact, I never work with inspiration from other artists; I challenge myself to create a new painting without relying on the great artists. But of course I like Picasso, but there is also Miro, Modigliani, Matisse, Fernand Léger, Karel Appel, Keith Haring and so many more...

JESÙS LEGUIZAMO Colombia’s Breakthrough Artist By angela noelle

J

esĂšs leguizamo is one of the most fascinating and provocative artists working in Colombia today. His work transcends descriptions and transports viewers into his, sometimes chaotic, sometimes mesmerizing world. Resident is honored to interview him here:

108 | resident.com

Tell us how you got into art? At school. In the art classes I began to feel a pleasure for the drawing and for all the manual activities that we did. I remember that he reproduced many images of magazines that I was storing in order to draw. I think my love for cinema also brings me closer to reflecting on the image.

Where did you study? I studied at the school of fine arts at the National University of Colombia where I did a specialization in pictorial image. What are your inspirations? I have always been interested in art that changes

the aesthetics of the world. Artists who break with harmony and beauty, artists like Bacon, Richter, Botero. I have been very aware of the cinema and literature that reflects that dark vision of the world, I really like the oneiric images of David Lynch’s films. My painting is also based on the new technologies used to produce images, I am very interested in the “glitch of the digital era, the damage in the images are a source of inspiration to make my oil paintings. What form of painting would you say your art is? I think that in my work I try to question the identity of the human being, too; I want the viewer to question himself when he sees my portraits and have another look on the subject. This concept brings me closer to the expressionist movement and its vision of the world since it directly involves the body of modern man, his passions and desires. In my painting I look for the body to be flesh, to build the space of painting with matter. Who are your clients? Have you done many art shows? Some of the people who buy my paintings are collectors, I work with some designers. With my painting i have approached people like psychiatrists, doctors, other artists. I have shown my work in some galleries in cities such as London, Los Angeles, Vienna and also shows in my country Colombia. What is your next series? Which series are you the most proud of ? I am working on a series with some themes of history about my country, they are large format paintings that show a deeper reality in which I am, I have a political look for this. I remember a series of very small portraits where I used film frames, these paintings were very revealing for me because I found a way to explore in painting. Which artists inspire you the most? For me Velazquez, El Bosco, Francis Bacon, Gerhard Richter, Michael Borremans represent the sincere look on life and dedication to painting.

VICTOR TKACHENKO Plays with Shapes By angela noelle

V

ictor Tkachenko, is a Ukrainian-Canadian artist living in Toronto, Canada. Victor received professional art training beginning at age ten and was one of a few graduates to complete the extensive and rigorous program from the renowned Art School in Krivoy Rog, Ukraine. Following his fine art education Victor gained architectural training (graduate level) at the Kyiv National University of Construction and Architecture in Kiev, Ukraine. As a painter Victor works primarily with acrylic on board. He displays a mastery of line and color through purposeful brushwork and a palette dominated by rich earth tones thickly applied to the canvas. The physicality of his work is enhanced with accents of ink and, intermittently, the addition of industrial materials such as varnish and plaster. Throughout the various stages of his work, Victor’s figurative forms are drafted with elongated lines, exaggerated features and geometric patterns. Tell us how you got into art? Before age ten I was drawing constantly so my mother put me in art school. I drew cats, airplanes, flowers, tanks, horses, etc.! I was selected a year earlier than normal. This was a rigorous school with lessons a few times per week outside of regular school. Where did you study? Specialized art training: Krivoy Rog Art School (ages 10-17). This school was an art school for kids, a Union Art School for Workers and so on. All very intensive and separate from full-time studies. Also I continued to study art at the same time as my Bachelor Degree studies in Architecture from Kyiv National University of Construction and Architecture. I also completed some Post Graduate work in Architecture there as well. What are your inspirations? Everything! From street art to the Old Masters. What form of painting/drawing would you say your art is?

Figurative mostly and sometimes still life, (nature motifs) and landscapes. Who are your clients? Have you done many art shows? My clients have come from all over the world, most recently the Middle East and a lot of clientele from the USA. What is your next series? Which series are you the most proud of ?

I can never predict my “next series. Recently I had a lot of fun creating the SHOWstudio Paris Fashion Week Haute Couture collections (noted above) – these collections were innovative, creative and crazy!! All of these designers served as an inspiration for me and the SHOWstudio curator was enamored with my work, and informed me that my fashion illustrations were her favorite from the 80+ illustrators invited to date since the start of this project.

Which artists inspire you the most. These honestly keep changing as I continue to grow as an artist. But one genius is American artist John Singer Sargent (e.g., Portrait of Madame X). saatchiart.com/dasha88 victorkachenko.com showstudio.com

ANE ALFEIRAN Paints with Flair By angela noelle

ell us how you got into art. My mom is an artist, so art has always been a big part of my life; I grew up surrounded by canvases, sculptures and paint. As a consequence, I always have felt an inherent desire to create —my school notebooks are full of sketches and drawings and I would constantly get into trouble for spending my time drawing instead of taking notes. I have always produced art for myself on a smaller scale, but a few years ago I started experimenting with larger-scale pieces, different mediums, and actually painting and sharing my art. Once I started

there was no going back and it has completely transformed the way I approach art and my life. Where did you study? I studied Hospitality Management at CESSA University in Mexico City and have worked in the hospitality industry in Madrid, Dubai, Beijing and Hong Kong. By the time I was 23 years old my company moved me to Hong Kong to open and run a hotel. I took several art courses at Hong Kong University and finally decided to pursue a full-time art career earlier this year. Quitting my job to become an artist was

one of the biggest decisions I have ever made. Leaving a stable, successful career in hospitality to pursue my passion is both scary and exciting, but I haven’t had a moment of doubt that I made the right decision. I have always known that to be happy I needed to do something creative and I loved painting, but, as with many artists, I wasn’t sure if I could make a career out of it. What are your inspirations? Inspiration is a curious idea. I create visual art that turns everyday norms into dynamic pieces of aesthetic

what people think of my art and what they think it represents/how it makes them feel. I am still evolving and discovering who I am as an artist so who knows what style I will end up identifying with the most! Who are your clients? Have you done many art shows? My clients come from all over the world and range from young professionals to seasoned art collectors. Some find me through social media and online while others may see my art exhibited at one of the shows I have participated in. I genuinely am amazed at the diverse client base that enjoys the art I create. I have done a few art shows and am looking to do more in the future. In 2017 I had showings in London and Lisbon and recently exhibited in Hong Kong during Art Week. I am now preparing for my first solo exhibition in Mexico City in November 2018. What is your next series? Which series are you the most proud of ? As mentioned above, my next series will be exhibited in Mexico City later this year. It will

explore certain themes I have taken a particular interest in recently which can broadly be defined as “social behavior between cultures.” I know that sounds vague, but you have to visit the exhibition in Mexico to see my interpretation! It’s hard to pick one particular series of which I am most proud —it often depends on how I am feeling. The recent series I worked on in Hong Kong had a brief of “mediocre” which is challenging in several respects, but I am particularly proud of the pieces I exhibited. Which artists inspire you the most? Almost every day I discover new artists that inspire me, whether it is graffiti artists in Hong Kong, traditional artists in Myanmar or viewing the classics in Rome. In terms of established artists that have had the biggest impact on me and inspired me the most, it would have to be Picasso and Basquiat. Both artists’ works are incredible in their own right and they had equally fascinating personal lives to match. anealfeiran.com

beauty. Everything inspires me, from my day-to-day life and the people I interact with, to music and even the weather; I never know when inspiration will strike or anticipate where it will come from. I believe life should be beautiful; I use layers of color, shapes, and gestures and turn them into balanced representations that explore the human mind. I have extremely lucid dreams and my art process is like meditation to –me—it helps me make sense of my thoughts, clears my mind and transforms these thoughts and dreams into artistic representations. The power and equilibrium of sounds, colors and rhythm flow together in a dynamic whole to depict emotions and passions. What form of painting would you say your art is? This is the question I always find the hardest to answer! If I had to pin down a specific style I would probably say close to neoexpressionist? I leave a question mark because I am always curious to hear
