THE JOYS OF SUMMER

W

ith June comes the Summer Solstice which is the longest day of the year marking the official beginning of summer. Personally it is my favorite season of the year, when the nights are warm and the fashion embodies the definition of effortless chic. In keeping with the summer theme, we focused on natural fruit based beauty amd their powerful properties that are as beneficial to your health on the outside as they are on the inside. Naturally summer vacation is on our minds as we highlight some amazing beach escapes such as Barbados, Daytona, Cancun, Antigua and Anguilla. Another joy of summer is the beautiful sun kissed glow that doesn’t require much effort, and we featured ways to get that natural beach beauty even when you are stuck in the city. With politicos at the center of the media these days, we also have a spotlight on Washington D.C. as a hot weekend destination to hit this summer before the political landscape changes. As spring transitions into the dog days of summer, it’s been a long tradition for New Yorkers to flock to the countryside on weekends for a posh respite. This was the inspiration for our fashion spread shot in the exclusive enclave of Bedford Corners. What better way to get there than with a Bentley Mulsanne Speed that combines extraordinary luxury with the power of a racing car. One of the highlights this month was meeting the sharp witted funny ladies of Bravo- Jill Kargman and Abby Elliott of Odd Mom Out, which will premiere its 2nd season this month. With the plethora of reality TV shows of entitled rich people around the country, Jill was a breath of fresh air as her innate New York sarcasm satirized this certain type of person in a humorous and ‘spot on’ way. Another centerpiece feature this month is on the talented Dr. Greuner from New York Surgical Associates who is making strides in changing the medical industry with his technological breakthroughs of non invasive surgical approaches. His striking fashion spread was inspired by the dramatic imagery of Nip & Tuck. Whether you are in the city or traveling the world, take the time to enjoy all of the joys of summer this season, because before you know it, fall will arrive.

ICONS & INFLUENCERS

KAREN KING

“Mayoress” of Mulberry Street By Bennett Marcus

The Cutting Room Soprano stars Vincent Pastore and Dan Grimaldi will present singer-songwriter Karen King for her encore performance at the Cutting Room on Wednesday, June 22. Danny DeVito who was at her first show told King. “Each song was an experience, a great piece of work.” King uses her powerful voice and four-octave range to bring emotion and passion to her songs. “I don’t throw anything away. Each lyric, each line, I feel it personally,” confides Karen.

John “Cha Cha” Ciarcia Such a stellar performance may be surprising given that the show almost didn’t happen. King and her longtime conductor, Angelo Di Pippo, had been working on the show for a year. A few days before, King’s husband, actor John “Cha Cha” Ciarcia, was admitted to the hospital, suffering from cancer, and she wasn’t sure she could go ahead with the performance. Her friends, including Tony Danza, told her she had to, and she did. “And I felt like I was a different singer, and I surpassed anything I’d ever done before that,” King says. “Even my conductor, who I’ve been working with since I was a teenager, said that. ”Her husband came out of the hospital to see the show, and she continued to work as his condition worsened, and in late November, he passed away. “Cha Cha wanted me to go on,” she says. When he was in the hospital, he told her that music was her destiny. The gig in June will mark her first time doing the show since then. thecuttingroomnyc.com

Elvis Presley The set will include pop standards like “If You Go Away” and some rock ‘n’ roll oldies, including “Vehicle,” from the Ides of March, and a medley of Elvis Presley hits, arranged by Di Pippo, She will also do “God Bless the USA,” a nod to Kate Smith, about whom King wrote a musical, which she did off-Broadway. All the songs she chooses have meaning for her.

Tony Danza & Alleva In addition to writing songs and rehearsing for a new album King continues to run her late husband’s iconic café, Cha Cha’s, in Manhattan’s Little Italy. Cha Cha was known as the unofficial mayor of Mulberry Street, and appeared in the HBO series 32 • Resident • June 2016

The Sopranos, and in such movies as Hoffa and Goodfellas. He discovered Tony Danza at a boxing gym, and the two remained lifelong friends. King brought Danza in as a partner in Alleva her Little Italy cheese company. King and her late husband bought the neighborhood mainstay, founded in 1892, so it would remain in business in the face of New York’s relentless gentrification. Danza will be the face of the company, which makes its own mozzarella and ricotta cheese. alledairy.com

Boys’ and Girl’s Towns of Italy She’s also running a wine business that she’d set up with Cha Cha, Grandpa Chacha’s Wine, imported from Italy. “I’m continuing what my husband and I were doing,” she says. In April, the Boys’ and Girls’ Towns of Italy honored King as its woman of the year at a gala at the Plaza Hotel, and a portion of the proceeds from her Cutting Room show will go to the organization. bgti.org

FOOD AND WINE CLASSIC IN ASPEN The Trade Commission of Peru in Los Angeles One of the events that has become synonymous with the Trade Commission of Peru in Los Angeles is the Aspen Food and Wine Classic which takes place this June 17th to 19th in the Rockies. Ricardo Romero, Director of the Trade Commission of Peru in Los Angeles is spearheading his country’s sponsorship of the culinary festival for the fourth year in a row. “If we want to promote Peruvian cuisine and make an impact in the mainstream market we need to work with chefs that are influential in the industry. The Food & Wine Classic in Aspen is the only food and wine show in the entire U.S. that, for three days, has the most influential chefs and restaurateurs under one tent. “We want to be where the players and the stakeholders are and be associated with them; that’s the value for us in food and wine because we not only promote Peruvian cuisine but Peru as a brand. One of our goals is to attract high income tourists to Peru and Aspen helps with that.” said Romero.

Ricardo Romero Ricardo Romero was appointed Director of the Trade Commission of Peru in Los Angeles in 2014. Previous to this post, Ricardo served as APEC director, a position where he lead Peru’s strategy and efforts to optimized benefits of the Trade Promotion Agreement signed between Peru and the United States. Romero was the Chairman and CEO of consulting firm, Tradingconsult, a consulting firm he founded in 2003. Tradingconsult provides advisory services to public institutions and businesses on foreign trade on a global scale. He also served as Executive Director of Peru’s leading trade business association, Comexperu and is also currently a columnist at Peruvian newspaper, Expresso. The Trade Commission of Peru in Los Angeles have their hand in everything Peruvian in the United States. Some of 34 • Resident • June 2016

their services include identifying potential American trade partners, trade counseling to Peruvian companies, and business matchmaking. The Trade Commission has four commercial American offices in New York, Miami, Washington D.C. and Los Angeles. All four offices help promote relations with American businesses by facilitating contacts with entrepreneurs and identifying new business opportunities.

Quinoa, chocolate & Pisco Some of the items the Trade Commission has brought to the US include children’s apparel, Peruvian chocolates, and organic and natural products, in which Peru has plenty of these high quality & in demand items “One of the advantages that Peru has over other countries is pima cotton, which is one of the softest cottons in the market. In terms of food, the number one food we promote is quinoa,

of which Peru is the number one exporter to U.S. markets” Romero adds, “we’re the number two exporter to the United States aside from Mexico.” With a new election set to take in Peru in June, Ricardo affirms that their goals will stay the same, as they usually build from the success of the trade commissions. As far as the future goes, Romero says, “We’ve been doing trade missions in different cities. We did one in San Francisco and before that was Los Angeles. This year, we’ll be doing Portland and Seattle together. So, we have plans for our office to expand beyond California. We get a lot of attention; we want that attention; we NEED that attention. We want to associate Peru with refined, sophisticated people and that’s how we value ourselves and I think we a doing a good job with that.” perutradeoffice.us

ounder Janet League-Katzin, created this holistic wellness center, an oasis where busy New Yorkers can fully restore. Janet’s personal journey to wellness has given her the holistic knowledge that she offers to others at Sphatika. The body is affected by your environment, foods that you consume, stress, and anxiety. The Sphatika Experience is designed to address the body’s need for deep restful sleep in order to restore and rejuvenate, which only occurs when the parasympathetic system is engaged. Through her research of ingredients, Janet carefully developed a 100% natural award-winning skincare line that attest to her standards of purity and integrity. The best way to experience the rejuvenating benefits of a comprehensive treatment is through Sphatika’s 2 hour Signature Experience. The first step towards detoxification starts with a 20 minute Far Infrared sauna where you are offered a crystal to formulate your intention for your treatment. This Far Infrared sauna is designed to relax muscles, joints, and bones while releasing built in toxins from the body as soothing music erases any outside stresses. Once in the treatment room the detoxification process continues. A gentle body rocking to align the spine and to calm the central nervous system is followed by a gentle skin brushing and a lymphatic drainage massage. To replenish hydration, a moisture mask is applied on the body that is absorbed into your skin. While the body is under the steam canopy the therapist performs a soothing lymphatic drainage facial with the rejuvenating effects of oxygen infused with hyaluronic acid to penetrate deeply under dermal layers. After your body is fully relaxed the treatment concludes with a soothing cleanse of hot towels. Post treatment relish in the peaceful sanctity of their crystal sanctuary as your body will thank you for this restorative journey. Sphatika.com - Hillary Latos

MARCO MARANGHELLO Stylist to the Stars

W

ith a discerning eye and unmatched flair, Marco Maranghello arranges tresses into stately statements. As a maestro of the tresses, A-list celebrities such as J Lo, who has been a loyal customer for over 18 years have Marco to thank for their gorgeous locks and extensions. In an era where the digital pace of change has many rushing to adopt the latest trend, Marco is an indisputable standard-bearer for timeless beauty. This has earned him a coveted spot as the top stylist at the John Barrett salon and his work has been highlighted in top fashion publications, such as Vogue , Bazaar , InStyle , and Town & Country . Now, this hairdressing authority is getting ready to make a splash with his di Mare Hair Collection. Marco has developed this line of hair pieces over a period of 18 years, while working in high-end hair salons. His familiarity with hair texture and color lend him the knowledge necessary to produce the right product match for each hair type. Most notably, Marco’s line features extensions that are silky soft and weightless. His Great Length Ultrasonic Extensions add length and suppleness to any head of hair. These have been featured on the runway, at the Chanel, Oscar de la Renta, Versace, and Marchesa fashion shows. While di Mare is exclusively available at the John Barrett Salon at Bergdorf Goodman, plans for its expansion to other luxury outlets are underway. Marco’s goal is to become the leading purveyor of finely made hair extensions, continually spinning tresses that are worth gold to the women he helps to transform. As he puts it, “Hair is an extension of a woman’s personality. I have made it my goal to help each client embrace and exhibit their distinctiveness through their hairstyle.” Marco’s vision also extends to charity. He has donated individually styled wigs and other hairpieces to cancer patients and survivors who have lost their hair due to chemotherapy. He has witnessed, up close, the transformative power of a great hairstyle on some of these recipients. “It sounds like such a small detail, but it can really change a person’s outlook on life,” he asserts. Just as Marco can inspire women to feel their best with a new look, he looks to them for inspiration. It’s a symbiotic relationship that continues to produce outstanding results and is already generating great expectation regarding the next chapter in his ascension. 48 • Resident • June 2016

A COMPREHENSIVE 21 CENTURY MEDICAL APPROACH st

Dr. David Greuner, Founder of the NYC Surgical Associates

A

s a child, Madeline was one of those classic books you read over and over again, laughing at Madeline’s antics and free spirit. However, one of the more serious anecdotes was her medical emergency when she developed appendicitis, and had to be rushed to the hospital (much to the distress of Miss Clavel). After the surgery, her classmates came to visit her, all exclaiming that the “biggest surprise of all—on her stomach was a scar!” As far as appendicitis, much progress has been made and large incisions are now a thing of the past, replaced by new surgeries called keyhole surgeries (small 3-4 incisions leaving minimal scars). However, aside from appendicitis, there still exist many small surgeries that continue to scar, even if the scars are much smaller than they used to be. Though not as large, these smaller incisions leave a small, but still undeniably visible, reminder of the surgery. For Dr. David Greuner and his NYC Surgical Associates, these kinds of incisions are not only unnecessary, but are entirely avoidable in certain surgical fields. A revolutionary and innovative surgeon, he developed a new procedure for endovascular surgery: using live imaging such as X-rays, ultrasounds and CT scans, he is able to conduct endovascular (disease in blood vessels) surgeries through a catheter. Extraordinarily, the incisions look more like a needle mark than a scar! “Because we don’t make a lot of wounds, we make a tremendous amount of procedures at a very low complication rate.” Dr. Greuner was an unlikely surgeon. Majoring in

Economics in his undergraduate years, his postuniversity experience was more focused on fitness and health than on a medical career. His interest in anatomy and his overall knowledge of the human body did eventually lead him into the medical sphere, attending St. George’s University School of Medicine before obtaining an important surgical internship. Despite his obvious talent and potential, he lost his position and had to start from scratch, slowly building his way up the ranks with only his ambition and self-determination to push him through. Eventually gaining impressive experience as a resident at numerous medical centers, his residency at the University of Arizona and Mount Sinai School of Medicine affiliate hospitals led to the recognition he had been looking for, and he was named Chief Resident of the year. Just as many patients feel hospitals to be cold and impersonal, Dr. Greuner was not inspired by the relatively sterile and standardized processes of hospital surgery. Looking to find his own path in the medical world, he began to think of opening his own practice. This would not only give him the opportunity to create a more personalized treatment process and atmosphere, but also give him the innovative freedom he had been deprived of. Dr. Greuner, in comparing the patient experience at his own practice and the hospital approach, describes his as a more “conscientious approach to the patients,” in large part due to his commitment to taking care of the patient from beginning to end. In the beginning, his NYC Surgical Associates practice was only part time as he was living in Boston at the time. Every weekend, he would make a grueling commute to the city to see his patients.

The more time passed, the more the excitement and the thrill of endless possibilities rose, reaching a point to where it became impossible for him to remain in Boston. After six months of commuting, he had finally decided to make just one last journey to New York, moving permanently to the city in order to devote himself completely to his practice. Starting off small, New York City Surgical Associates (NYCSA) began to grow exponentially with the addition of highly skilled and impressive doctors: from anesthesia to spine, endovascular to cosmetic and reconstruction, the different specialties of the physicians and surgeons increased patient volume. Graduates from prestigious medical institutions such as Yale University School of Medicine or RUSH University Medical Center, Dr. Greuner recruited the best and the brightest medical minds to create the best possible surgical care for his patients. What was the added benefit of bringing these minds together? The practice becomes completely in-house, allowing the different fields and specialties to work together in a more synchronous manner. “We have our own anesthesia, our own surgical center. A lot of the problems we treat interrelate, and there are often commonly coexisting conditions between the same patient. The average patient that comes to us ends up getting four to five surgeries for that very reason.” Dr. Greuner goes on to mention another benefit, remarking as he laughs that the extra help gives him a bit of a reprieve: he is now able to focus on just a few major areas, namely endovascular surgery. And yet how can a small practice compete against larger institutions

such as Columbia Medical? “The difference is that we do probably a lot more than those people do because we’re just very high volume. We each specialize in a small amount of things or fields, and we each do a huge volume of that.” The cohesive nature of NYCSA’s setup also helps alleviate one of the major fears of patients in dealing with medical problems: the bill. A large hospital, while having many different departments and varieties of surgeons, also outsources a lot of its resources, especially private surgeons and equipment. This outsourcing means that the bill is more complicated and leaves the patient caught in the realm of the unknown: can I afford this, and when am I going 56 • Resident • June 2016

to know? The in-house structure of NYCSA means that the costs are immediately transparent and known. “We track every procedure, so when patients come in with their insurance card, I can tell you what I would get paid per procedure, per insurance provider, per what procedure we’re going to need. I can tell them what their out of pocket cost is going to be. And I can guarantee that, because everything is in-house.” Since the areas of focus of the practice are not geared towards lifesaving surgeries and procedures, the desired demographic is not your run of the mill New Yorker. Having expanded to nine offices in New York City, the locations themselves are

representative of the typical patient: with two offices on 60th and Madison and one in Chelsea, the patients tend to belong to more of the upper middle class. Despite this demographic, Dr. Greuner puts a strong emphasis on his refusal to “cherrypick his cases.” Conducting many pro-bono cases, he asserts that the people who he wants to pick for pro-bono are people with real problems. “We don’t just have the average person off the street, and it’s not because we feel we owe them something. We do it because we want to.” For Dr. Greuner charitable work is a big part of what he does when he’s not working. This May he traveled to the Cannes Film Festival for the Generous People Gala which raises funds for The Heart Fund which saves the lives of children

OUR TEAM For Neurological and Spine surgery Dr Arien Smith is an expert having graduated from the Yale University School of Medicine and having received his B.A. in Biology and Spanish from University of Rochester. Dr Smith has the rare combination of subspecialty training in both orthopedic and neurosurgical spine surgery for chronic, acute, and traumatic issues. He also brings to NYC Surgical Associates his experience in pediatric deformity and scoliosis surgery.

Dr. Jason Hanks specializes in regional anesthesia and acute pain management. Although Dr. Hanks’s anesthesia training encompassed a broad base of surgical procedures (Neuro, Cardiac, Laparoscopic, Thoracic and Obstetrical), his area of interest lies specifically in multi-modal pain management, and using peripheral nerve blocks to manage postoperative pain and make recovery as effortless as possible. Dr. Hanks is active in continuing medical education, is actively involved in community education, including medical volunteer work with NYC Surgical Cares and The Heart Fund.

Dr. Victor Rosenberg, whose specialty is Cosmetic and Complex Reconstructive Surgery of the entire body, has been in private practice since 1970. For twenty years he was the director of Plastic Surgery at NYU Downtown Hospital. During the Viet Nam War, he was a Commander in the United States Navy, serving as Chief of Plastic Surgery at the St. Albans Naval Hospital. Dr. Rosenberg is the inventor of instruments used in Plastic Surgery and other surgical specialties. He has authored papers which were published in medical journals. With more than 16 years of experience specializing in breast and body procedures, Dr. Fiorillo is recognized as one of the most experienced plastic surgeons in his field. Always looking to improve his technique, he recently traveled to Sweden to be trained by Sientra®, the creators of the popular Gummy Bear breast implants, on advanced procedures and best practices for implementing silicone breast implants. His expertise and thousands of successful surgeries have brought him the honor of being appointed by Sientra, Restylane, Dysport, and Perlane to train other doctors in the United States. Due to his renown, Dr. Fiorillo has performed cosmetic surgery on numerous movie and television stars. He is frequently sought after by mainstream media outlets and programs for his expert opinion, including: Fox News, Good Morning America, The View, The Doctors, and Real Housewives of New Jersey.

Dr. Elie S. Semaan is double board certified in vascular and general

suffering from cardiovascular diseases in third world countries by investing in technological innovations and solutions. This charity was created by Dr. David Luu, one of NYCSA’s associates. In explaining another of his areas of interest, Dr. Greuner gives us perhaps the best explanation of NYCSA’s goals: “A lot of the stuff we treat is not life threatening, it’s quality of life threatening.” The example given to show how he aims to achieve this goal is based off a representative NYCSA patient narrative: Say you work out a lot. You have a hernia, and a typical treatment of this would have been to implant a mesh, a patch that prevents the bowel from getting stuck. However, while the danger is

usually lessened, the hernia, and the corresponding bulge of your abdomen, remains. The NYCSA’s solution is of its own design: through a complex body-wall reconstruction, or a moving around of your musculature to reinstitute your natural physiology, your functional capacity is resolved, and the aesthetic problem gone. With all of these new procedures developed just within the last ten years, it seems we are only skimming the surface of what Dr. Greuner can do. Our only question: What’s next? Nycsurgical.net

surgery, and the Director of the Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery at NYC Surgical Associates. His undergraduate training was performed at University of California Los Angeles, and residency training at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY, where his surgical experience spanned from general and minimally invasive surgery to critical care, vascular surgery, and cardiothoracic surgery.

Dr. Maxim Tyorkin is a leading orthopedic specialist dedicated to providing patients in New York City with the most advanced care for musculoskeletal diseases, injuries and disorders. His in-depth understanding of sports injuries helps him develop the most comprehensive treatment plans for all sorts of injuries to joints, ligaments, tendons and other soft tissues so recreational and professional athletes can return to their sports as soon as possible. He also has a wealth of experience treating occupational injuries, age-related diseases such as arthritis, and traumatic injuries sustained in car accidents and slip-and-fall accidents.

B

y most accounts Jill Kargman can be considered to be a 21st century social anthropologist with a penchant for dissecting the rarified world of New York’s guarded Upper East Side. A native New Yorker who grew up in this world, Kargman has a wit that’s as sharp as a Samurai’s sword and she humorously captures the extremes of this echelon of society in Bravo’s hit show Odd Mom Out which debuts their second season on June 20. Jill plays a satirical version of herself, a down to earth mom who married into wealth and suddenly finds herself thrust in the super rich yet competitive society that resides on the Upper East Side. Preferring goth over pearls and pastels, Jill Weber’s self styled wardrobe is a testament of her disdain for the very society she found herself thrust into. At the polar opposite of the spectrum is the catty and pretentious Brooke, a member of the waspy blonde old money establishment Jill finds herself up against. From outrageous antics of one upmanship to ostentatious displays of conspicuous consumption Odd Mom Out is a scripted and satirized look at the gilded world of Manhattan through the eyes of a grounded soul. Here Resident Magazine spoke to the brilliantly sarcastic and best selling author and actress Jill Kargman who plays Jill Weber and SNL alum and comedian Abby Elliott who plays the super competitive Brooke Von Weber, as they took a break from filming their second season of Odd Mom Out and dressed in their respective characters for this photoshoot.

Q&A WITH JILL KARGMAN Q: As you grew up in the Upper East Side did you always feel kind of sarcastic towards it? Jill: No I grew up in the seventies, it sounds weird but it was the Upper East Side so it was nice but people were breaking into cars, Madison Avenue had bodegas, it is not what it looks like now. It was way more down to earth, the conspicuous consumption that I tend to satirize is more of a recent, in the last 20 years kind of phenomenon. I didn’t grow up with that at all. Everyone sort of knew the value of the dollar more. I went to Spence and then I went to boarding school then I moved back the day after college and I never left.

Q: What were the influences of your parents? Jill: I grew up in a rental apartment. My dad is not the owner of Chanel, he is the hired gun, and before that, he was in advertising. I feel like we were pretty normal but we were in a rental, it wasn’t like we were in a penthouse on the park or anything. I definitely saw the type of kids that had that lifestyle but it wasn’t really at a point where I felt that everything was so flashy. Most of my friends are really down to earth.

Q: So you grew up with a lot of the people that you satirize? Jill: No the people that we examine in the show are not natives. I find the natives to have a pretty great sense of humor, to be pretty cool about it, I think sometimes it’s the red state transplants who read a book “How to be a Rich Person,” or “How to be a New Yorker.” They’re actually more competitive than the natives, I find the natives to be pretty chill. I think the most competitive person is a southern girl who now lives in Manhattan.

Q: What gave you the idea of the show? Jill: NBC auctioned my book Momzillas a year after it came out. Then they had a writer from Friends try to adapt it, it was just in turn around, it wasn’t going to get made. I’ve written other books since then and I was doing copywriting and my boss there was very supportive and thought I should reexamine TV. To answer your question, I had three kids in four years so that was mostly what I was doing but I wrote a book a year. I write pretty quickly, it’s not like I’m writing historical fiction.

They’re beach reads and I am not aspiring to win a Pulitzer Prize or anything. So once my son was a little older, I just felt like I wanted to be busier and get more freelance work so I went to Bravo to meet these producers and they said we’re going to get you a meeting with Andy Cohen. Originally he wanted me to do some kind of reality show which I was not open to and then he said oh I would love to do something together, what can we do. I met with Lara Spotts, his successor as Head of Development and essentially Odd Mom Out was mixture of my nonfiction book and Momzilla in a blender.

Q: How have your friends embraced the show? Jill: They really embraced it. I get a lot of high-fives or giggles. Weirdly some people see themselves as an Abby instead of me. I’ve gotten a lot of support. Everyone thinks they’re a good mom, everyone thinks they’re a good person. So they don’t really see the excessive behavior. I’ve been at parties where things have been really over the top and they say don’t put this in your show but no one has ever said you portrayed it wrong. I’ve lived here my whole life, they know that I know what I’m talking about.

Q: How would you describe your personal style? Jill: One of our writers, Will Gramm, says it’s Wednesday Addams meets Tim Burton meets Karl in drag. My favorite designers are Marc Jacobs and Anna Sui.

Q: What’s your obsession with bows? Jill: I love bows. I’ve always loved bows since I was a little girl and I’ve always loved dresses with bows. The essence I guess in addition to the Wednesday Addams/ Tim Burton things is like romance and violence. I always love being feminine, I don’t wear pants, I always wear dresses and I have my tattoos but it is not scary because I tamper it with sweetness so I like that the medium is needles and black ink but then it’s sweet looking.

Q: You’ve been working a lot with Drew Barrymore. Jill: Yes she is my sister-in-law and a guest star on the show. She is one of the closest people in my life. I just did a cover story on Marie Claire on her and it was really fun. Typically we’re not working together, we’re just drinking wine and hanging out with all the cousins because our kids are more of siblings.

Q: What do you think of the acting versus the writing? Jill: I really enjoy it, I was an actor before I was a writer in college. When I took my first bow when I was graduating Yale I was so sad, I thought I was never going to act again. At the time I felt like you had to blow some fat guy to get parts and you’re basically the casting couch and just do unsavory things. Now I think there’s more freedom, there are more female comedians who have their own looks but at the time it felt like the prettiest girl at Yale who was a senior when I was a Freshman was going to be an actress, and I was like she’s going to be famous, she’s amazing. I realize how difficult it was because I thought if she’s not getting work, I’m not going to get work because she was the star at every play at Yale. I also feel like I’m a workaholic, I need to be busy but so much of acting is hurry up and wait for that audition. It didn’t really cross my mind to get an agent and be an actress, it was just not on the cards. I wanted to be a writer, work in magazines, and have a job. I’m not wired to sit at home and stare at the phone.

Q: Do you have a mentor whether it’s for writing or acting? Jill: I would say Woody Allen is my number one idol, I worship his writing, I worship his acting. I see him all the time in the neighborhood. One time at that fabulous bookstore on 71st and Lex, Bookberries, I saw his book at the window and I went in and bought it. I walked to Park Avenue and I was walking by the Armory and he’s walking towards me and I’m like this is crazy, I’m holding his book, so I said I’m so sorry to stalk here, I literally just happen to be holding your book, it’s too weird can you just sign it? He was like sure. So he signed it and we parted ways. On the other end of the spectrum, I admire Trey Parker and Matt Stone, the creators of South Park. I think they’re all so smart and so funny. I really think they’re true geniuses.

Q: Where do you get your ideas from? Jill: Just life. I want to be a good mother but the time with my kids is my biggest inspiration. I hear stuff even people in the street say, I turned in a scene to Lara Spotts, our executive, and she said the scene is genius writing, and I said I can’t take credit; I plagiarized it from actual people talking. I got there and all these moms were talking about disaster preparedness and how there’s this website blackumbrella.com where they have these $5000 go bags that has radioactive iodine pills if there’s a bomb in Union Square and this kit where you can drink your own pee. Everyone has these safe houses in their town houses, you get custom go sneakers with all the diamonds in the sole, people

72 • Resident • June 2016

are crazy. They said they have a navy seal coming to coach the kids on disaster preparedness, if there’s an ebola or zika virus outbreak or a zombie apocalypse, we’ll be prepared.

Q: Do you find it easier to be scripted because you’re so natural in the way you present yourself? Jill: I do like it scripted because sometimes when we do the improv rifts, sometimes they’re used and sometimes they’re not. I’m happy to have it down on paper what we want in and then we’ll do a fun run at the end if we have time. I love our writers room, my name is on four of the 10 but we really do all of them. I go over everybody’s at the end and make sure that it is allright and everyone pitches in on my script, it’s just a really collaborative process.

Q: How difficult is it to memorize the script? Jill: It’s not bad, I’m lucky, I have a photographic memory. We had one day last week where we had 11 pages so that was a little challenging but most nights I’ll just get in bed and study before I go to sleep so when I wake up it’s not a totally new thing. A lot of actresses I’ve spoken to, when you get to hair and makeup chair, they get the slides there for you and I have a thing with our AD, he gives them to me the night before so I can study.

Q: Do you have ideas for other shows? Jill: Someone wanted to meet about another show but I really just want to focus on my kids and this show. I want this show to go forever. I’ll do it till I’m Odd Grandma Out.

Q: Favorite restaurants? Jill: Rao’s in Harlem is my favorite restaurant in New York. My parents had a table so I grew up going there and I love it. In this neighborhood I love Sette Mezzo and Il Cantinori.

Q: Hobbies? Jill: I’m really not good at sports and I hate sports. I really love skiing and my husband skied for the United States so he’s really insistent that we go with the kids twice a year. You will never find me on a tropical island.

Q: Favorite neighborhood? Jill: I feel like Williamsburg was like my road not taken, I feel like I was born too early for that. When I just got out of college 20 years ago, I didn’t feel like it was totally safe yet but in ‘99 I went back there and I felt like I should have moved there but I was in between relationships so I moved back with my mom and dad. If I had an alternate choice, I would do Williamsburg, it’s very alive and young.

Q&A WITH ABBY ELLIOTT Q: Did you always know you wanted to be a comedian? Elliot: No I wanted to be an actor. Growing up watching my dad act, I wanted to be a serious dramatic actor. I went to school for musical theatre before dropping out and then I moved to LA after dropping out of Marymount Manhattan College for theatre and sort of just found a community in UCB and improv school and through that I wanted to still act but do comedic acting. SNL happened and I couldn’t say no to that. It is more of being a comedian. But now with Odd Mom Out, I get to do whatever I wanted to do, which is comedic acting.

Q: Let’s go back to your acting roots. Elliot: My grandfather was Bob Elliot of Bob and Ray. They were a radio team and had a live show which they did at Radio Show and they did a sketch show on NBC. My dad followed in his footsteps. He was a page at Letterman and would try to do things to make Dave laugh. Dave hired him as a writer and made him do goofy bits on the show and he met my mother there.

Q: Who was funnier? Your dad or your grandfather? Elliot: My mom is very funny. My dad and grandfather’s sensibilities are very different. My grandfather is very dry and very witty in a kind of every man’s way and my dad is very goofy and makes fun of himself. They are both very funny. My grandfather sadly just passed a couple of months ago. We were very overwhelmed with how many fans that came out to show their support to us.

Q: Who is your style more like? Elliot: I think it’s neither. My sister is an actress as well and our style is different. My style is definitely more comedic acting and diving into characters and committing to it 100 percent and making them a little exaggerated. I think that’s why my dad said his problem at SNL was that he liked to make fun of himself and he was sort of outside himself and looking in. For me, I was like no I want to embody Angelina Jolie, I want to become her. I think that’s the difference between our impressions and characters. My sister is just so funny, she’s so subtle. She was in that movie that won South by Southwest two years ago called Fort Tilden which she starred in.

Q: Is that a ring? Elliot: This is a ring. The one I wear on Odd Mom Out is a much different shape and size. I prefer this one. I got engaged in October, and our wedding is going to be in September. My fiance is Bill Kennedy

76 • Resident • June 2016

who writes for House of Cards. We met on a movie that he wrote, Sex Ed, which is on Netflix. It was shot in Tampa and while I was there for two days I couldn’t believe the party that I was walking into with the cast and crew. We met three years ago but reconnected a year ago when the movie went to the Portland Film Festival where it won. After that we were just coincidentally subletting in Williamsburg working on different projects so we had a nice little Brooklyn romance when we first started.

Q: How different are you in real life with your character Brooke? Elliot: I am the polar opposite from my character. We’re both from Connecticut so there’s that. But I like to think that I’m very different from her. Brooke strives to be perfect in every way of her life and to some extent I relate to that, wanting to be in control and feel like you have your surrounding under control, she’s a little meaner than I am. She definitely dresses more colorfully than I do, I don’t have the same knack for pastels and pink that she does.

Q: How did you get casted? Elliot: I saw the pilot presentation that Jill had initially made. I thought it was great and she was amazing, I couldn’t believe that she had never acted before. I sat down with her in LA to talk about the role and she was just so funny, her sensibility was just so unique to anything that I’ve ever witnessed anywhere else. She’s not UCB improv trained, she’s just so unique so I definitely felt a strong connection to that and I knew immediately she was going to create a great show and a great product.

Q: Did your fiancé read the script? What did he say? Elliot: He did. He is very supportive and very excited about it and a good part for me. He is very brutally honest so that is good.

Q: Has it changed your perception of Upper East Side and the whole echelon here? Elliot: It has. I couldn’t believe the things that were in the script that were actually true. In the first season when the characters talked about a colonic juice place where you can actually get juice and go in the back and get a colonic. The Von Weber changing, where Brooke changes her name and restores the Von in it after they find out that she’s actually Austrian aristocracy. She had to re-monogram everything. Though my dad grew up on the upper east side, he describes it very differently, in the sixties and seventies they were like The Royal Tenenbaums because they were an artist sort of family amongst these upper east siders. I to some extent feel that way having grown up in Connecticut because I grew up in Fairfield county and my dad

was an actor and nobody’s parents were actors.

Q: So did that encourage you to go into acting? Elliot: Yeah, I was definitely never pushed or encouraged. if anything I was encouraged to go into college and which is why I went but later dropped out because I didn’t want to be there. Seeing my dad do it, I knew that I wanted to be in the business.

Q: Who do you like to do the best? Elliot: I love doing Drew Barrymore because she herself is a really light fun person. I also love doing Anna Faris.

Q: Are there any actors that you want to work with? Elliot: Michael Fassbender. I would love to work with Meryl Streep. I did an impression of her on SNL. I did a Meryl Streep show at MSG Parody which you can watch on Hulu. I loved working with Blythe Danner. I worked with some pretty incredible people at SNL; I got to work with them in a pressure cooker environment and watch them do their thing.

Q: How many kids do you want to have? Elliot: As many as possible. I think three is good, or four or two, I would be happy with two too. We’ll just see how many my body can handle. It’s a dream to work in Manhattan. You don’t have to be stuck in a stuffy soundstage in LA, just work with amazing people. Julia and Elisa the show runners are fantastic. Jill is fantastic. There is no drama, no politics. They hand me these gifts which are scripts and I feel very lucky and blessed.

Q: What is your favorite food? Elliot: Right now, I’m preparing for the wedding so I’m doing low carbs. I usually cook myself and I eat eggs and spinach for breakfast with three shots of espresso with xylitol which is an actual sweetener. It is supposed to be good for allergies. Lunch I usually have a salad with chicken. I love kombucha tea. I’m hooked up on kombucha iv. For places in NYC, my favorites are Claudette on 9th street and 5th avenue. For sushi I love Sushi Seki. And also Beatrice Inn, their chef, Angie Mar is a Chopped Champion.

Q: Where are you going on your honeymoon? Elliot: We’re going to South Africa, Botswana, and then some safari camps around Mamu followed by the beaches in Mozambique to the beach for a week. We are really excited about it.

Modern Luxury

By Bennett Marcus

TONY INGRAO, RANDY KEMPER, & BACCARAT Team Up to Create Modern Luxury Baccarat Crystal “

W

e do not sell a look. We sell luxury; we sell comfort,” says interior designers Tony Ingrao and Randy Kemper. The AD100 designers, who have created private homes for clients like Beth and Howard Stern, Kim Catrell, former G.E. CEO Jack Welch and Donny Deutsch, has now taken on the interiors of an entire luxury high rise, the new Baccarat Residences New York. The project, a hotel-condominium tower located across the street from the Museum of Modern Art in Manhattan, marks Ingrao’s first full-scale development. It is also Baccarat’s first residential project in North America, and Ingrao was the perfect choice for the interiors. “Baccarat has always been an inspiration to me. From the jewelry to the tableware, the brand has been a symbol of true luxury and sophistication for more than 200 years,” he says.

60 Million Dollar Penthouse For the interiors of the 60 Baccarat residences, Ingrao built upon the French brand’s storied history and introduced contemporary touches that appeal to today’s discerning buyer. “The name Baccarat conveys a wealth of attributes – luxury, exceptional quality, artisanship, and beauty,” Ingrao says. A signature Baccarat fixture will be incorporated in the foyer of each residence, reflecting the firm’s reputation for artistry. The entrance to each apartment features a custom-made door handle with Baccarat

crystal inlay. Ingrao used solid white oak floors and a natural palette throughout the units, creating an inviting yet sophisticated environment. “We selected some of the most distinctive wood in the world for the flooring and entryways, and incorporated amazing custom bronze-work crackled with crystal coming through,” Ingrao says. “We used natural elements in a modern way, and played with how the light translated through each space to create a real sense of warmth. “For the Baccarat penthouse, a $60 million dollar duplex of over 7,000 square feet with expansive views of Central Park, Ingrao customdesigned a dramatic marble staircase.

Moneyed Home Owners A tenet of Ingrao’s design philosophy is that each client, and each project, has its own distinct personal style. “Every client is a new experience for us. We try to interpret them, rather than put a look on them,” he says. In creating the Baccarat units, the natural palette and combination of warmth and sophistication is the perfect backdrop for a wide array of tastes of future owners. For instance, having worked with wealthy clients around the world for many years, Ingrao has noticed that the younger generation of moneyed homeowners today are not as interested in antique furnishings. “Clients don’t want antiques anymore,” he says. “They want cool stuff that doesn’t tie you down or doesn’t seem too precious. Something you’re not going to be afraid to sit on.” However, he notes, younger clients are interested in buying art. For the Baccarat building’s residential lobby, Ingrao went for opulence, with floors of white marble with black insets, and walls of gray-mirrored glass and lustrous wood paneling. Baccarat apartment owners can avail themselves of the many high-level amenities that one would expect in a modern luxury building, including hotel services such as a 24-hour concierge, state-of-the-art fitness center, private dining room, and housekeeping services. There is also a fullservice, 10,000 square foot spa with a 55-foot pool, if you get stressed out while deciding how to decorate your new apartment. ingraoinc.com

MAMO RESTAURANT FIRST ANNIVERSARY

Celebrated the 69th Cannes Film Festival in New York

T

he Legendary Cannes Film Festival opened May 11th, 2016 in the South of France, right around the same time that celebrity favorite MAMO restaurant celebrated its first year in New York’s bustling SoHo neighborhood. MAMO New York is the transatlantic sister to Cannes film festival go-to restaurant MAMO Le Michelangelo, a two decades old French Riviera staple and favorite among movie stars and socialites alike. MAMO, the younger SoHo sibling, is run by Italian restauranteur Mike “Mamo” Mammoliti (son of MAMO Le Michelangelo’s Herve Mammoliti) and maintains the same authentic feel and dedication to Provençal flavors as its Antibes namesake. Just like MAMO Le Michelangelo, MAMO New York attracts a wide array of celebrities, including Rhianna, Magic Johnson, Alexander Wang, Diane Kruger, Samuel L. Jackson, Gigi Hadid, Beyonce and Jay Z. Although an ocean away from its sibling restaurant MAMO Le Michelangelo, MAMO New York celebrated the 69th Cannes Film Festival alongside their 1 year anniversary from New York with some specials this May 2016. These include decadent Cannes Favorites such as Raviolini al Tartufo (truffle ravioli), Focaccia al Tartufo (truffle pizza) and to drink, the signature Martini Al Tartufo (truffle martini). Heading up the kitchen and the brand new spring 2016 menu is MichelinStarred Executive Chef Massimo Sola, formerly of Eataly Roma and Ristorante Quattro Mori. A native of Italy, Sola grew up surrounded by the flavors and cooking style of the Italian/French Provençal cuisine. Drawing on colors and nature as inspiration, Sola is known for his simple yet eye catching dishes. Some of MAMO’s signature offerings include their flavorful Tagliata Di Filetto Al Vino Rosso, the MAMO Burger and the very popular home-style Capri salad. For those with a sweet tooth, MAMO also offers delicious desserts such as the classic Tiramisu, the rich Affogato alla vaniglia con fragole calde and the Cheesecake alla lavanda (cheesecake with a lavender twist). MAMO offers diners traditional southern Italian/French cuisine in an intimate yet elegant setting. The bi-level restaurant includes a casual lounge on the ground floor and a formal dining room upstairs. Both spaces capture the Riviera’s “sense of home” with original family photos and oversized vintage movie posters. The decor also incorporates classic New York-inspired touches such as exposed brick walls. To complement the flavorful dishes, MAMO also boasts an impressive cocktail menu from which diners can enjoy specialty cocktails such as the MAMO Negroni, the MAMO Spritz and their one-of-a-kind Truffle Martini. In addition to the cocktail program, MAMO also has an extensive wine list of carefully selected French and Italian wines to complement the cuisine. 323 West Broadway (between Grand & Canal St), New York, NY 10013 For more information, please call (646) 964-4641 or visit mamonyc.com

DINING OUT

June 2016

As summer is finally upon us, it’s time to enjoy the vibrant culinary scene in NYC. Whether enjoying the outdoor scene at a NYC steakhouse institution to indulging in the exotic cuisines of Japan and France. Eating and exploring new restaurants is something New Yorkers are passionate about and here are some compelling new places and menus to dabble in.

Natsumi A creative innovation by Barbara Matsumura, Natsumi is a fusion of Japanese and Italian cuisine inspired by her visit to Italy. The newest of her 15 restaurants features a variety of dishes set to be paired with drinks ranging from cocktails, to wine and sake. To ensure an authentic fusion with Italian flavors, Matsmara actively consulted with Italian chef Andrea Tiberi. Her sushi chef also holds an impressive resume having worked at Haru and Tomo. The menu features the Natsumi Grilled Salmon paired with tomato sauce, olives, capers, scallions and bok choy as well as a wide selection of hot and cold tapas that include sushi rolls, filet mignon and grilled shiitake penne which displays the chef’s ingenuity. Shawn Tomassi, General Manager at Natsumi has concocted refreshing cocktails to be paired with the exquisite meal. One of the best sellers is the Rising Sun-gria, a fusion of red wine paired with blackberry brandy and a fruit puree. A perfect pairing that ensures a satisfying and memorable experience. La Gamelle La Gamelle hopes to bring the focus back on French cuisine by putting a spin on classic dishes under the guidance of Chefs Michael Burbella and Denis Kuc. Consulting chef Michael Burbella brings experience to the table, after graduating from CIA Hyde Park, while Burbella honed his skills at Michelin star restaurants in France, allowing him to develop a strong understanding of the cuisine. From the French décor to the authenticity of the food guests feel like they have been transported back to France. The extensive raw bar menu features a wide selection of East Coast and West Coast oysters along with raw clams. A seasonally changing menu features daily specials along with classics such as onion soup gratin and foie gras terrine. The bistro also serves brunch which features a 10 ounce certified Angus beef burger topped off with gruyere cheese and truffle mayonnaise. Their cocktail program is inspired from expats who escaped Prohibition in Paris back in the early 20th century that mixes the Old World history with modern day cocktailing. Sojourn A cozy setup with a booming night scene, it is no wonder Sojourn is one of the most vibrant bars on the Upper East Side. During the week live bands perform to a packed house. The copper coated bar is packed with UES locals who regularly come to enjoy an extensive array of wines along with a buzzing scene. Only opened during the evening, like the name Sojourn suggests, their dinner menu takes cues from some of the favorite ethnic fusion dishes from around the world. The dining room setting is designed with a cozy cabin feel with warm lighting and oak and redwood lined walls. Enjoy favorites such as spicy tuna tartar crostini with quail eggs, house smoked trout salad, duck confit spring rolls, burrata agnolotti, paccheri amalfi with prawns calamari, clams and mussels, kobe beef sliders with ginger ketchup, and skirt steak with soy and Asian pear. The menu blends exotic yet subtle flavors that work brilliantly together that make this as much of a culinary destination as it is a trendy bar scene. Sojournrestaurant.com - Haiting Tan

City Crab Shack Every crustacean lover should make a pilgrimage to City Crab Shack that picks up a bounty of the freshest seafood each morning from the local fish market. A New York institution since 1993, this was formerly City Crab and Seafood Company before relocating to Union Square. This casual seafood shack oozes with charm and serves some of the best Southern inspired seafood in the city. Some of the specialties of the house include their delicious Maryland Crab soup made with a sweet potato puree base without the cream, a Cote d’Azur inspired Brooklyn bouillabase with crab, lobster shrimp, and calamari in a tomato fennel broth, NOLA inspired blue crab beignets, baked clams oreganato, and clusters of snow crab and king crab. Of course there are the delectable lobster rolls, crispy crab cakes, and decadent lobster & crab mac ‘n cheese. Fun and celebratory, just make sure to bring a healthy appetite. Del Frisco’s Double Eagle Steakhouse Del Frisco’s Double Eagle Steakhouse is one of Gotham’s most revered steakhouses which has suddenly become known for more than just their steaks. This spring they just unveiled new menu items designed to suit the modern palate with vibrant new flavors on steakhouse classics. New to the menu are elevated classics including Wagyu Beef French Dip, Lobster Roll served with a buttered brioche, Sautéed Chicken Picatta, Seared Rare Wagyu Beef Carpaccio, and Crab Fried Rice. Must have appetizers include the mouthwatering Thick Cut Bacon au Poivre, a former secret reserved for their regulars along with a delicious soy and citrus Tuna Tartar, Burrata and Heirloom Tomato Salad, and a delectable Escargot platter. Be sure to save room for their crave-worthy warm brown butter cake. During the warmer months, take advantage of their street side patio to enjoy the great outdoors and bustling Rockefeller Center scene. Delfriscos.com - Hillary Latos

To do so, you are given a list of bases such as chocolate and vanilla, and various toppings. Once you have chosen your base and the toppings now its mixed together in front of your eyes. By customizing your own blend it’s always an adventure at this UES local fave. Signs like “Cool is the new hot”, “Cool mess ice cream you make” encourage customers to be creative with your flavors, and fans love to post their creations all over social media. The

“NOTE”able WINE

A

s we head into summer, it’s all about celebrating with good friends, good food, and fine wine. As songwriter and guitarist Dave Matthews said, “If it tastes good to you then it’s good wine.” Matthews believed so strongly that the passion for making wine should be as strong as the passion for drinking it, so he set out to make unforgettable wine that’s accessible to everyone. By partnering with New Zealand winemaker Sean McKenzie, they launched Dreaming Tree Wines that is priced affordably without sacrificing taste or quality. Their 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon is very expressive yet elegant. It has a classic blend of blackberry, cherry, and cassis aromas, wrapped in toasted caramel and soft tannins that have a supple and balanced taste. Dreaming Tree Wines reflect Dave’s mission as an excellent wine-maker and the soul of a rock singer that pairs perfectly with a full bodied cheese at an alfresco picnic or a backyard BBQ.

ANTIGUA’S BLUE WATERS By Lavanya Sunkara

W

ith Caribbean-infused, spacious villas and private pools overlooking aqua-green waters, Antigua’s Blue Waters Resort is the ideal getaway for families and groups. A quick JetBlue flight brings you to the island where 365 stunning beaches await. Among the resort’s villas spread over 17 acres, including the modern Cove Suites and Pelican House, Rock Cottage stands out for its location on an outcropping jutting onto Soldier’s Bay surrounded by serene waters. You can sip cocktails in the open air lounge witnessing the sunset as the pelicans dive in to swoop their meals. Gentle waves roll onto buttery sand on secluded coves, and the famous “Hugo” tree, a palm bent during Hurricane Hugo, sways gently in the wind. There is a sense of serenity the Pelican Bar invokes, with cool breeze and blue skies peeking through rounded arches of the main resort. Winding paths through landscaped gardens draped with bougainvillea beckon to onsite dining, recreation, and accommodations. It’s easy to be drawn to the floor-to-ceiling mahogany bar, its shelves brimming with premium liquor and sparkling glasses. The resort takes its drinks seriously, crafting a unique cocktail for every meal. Whether it’s a Rumtini alongside brunch or Coconut Crush splashed with local rum paired with dinner, you’re sure to indulge the best tropical drinks. The rest of the bars around the property are named after popular bartenders like Carolyn, whose specialty Mango Martini is so delicious, you may never want to leave the resort! At the Palm Restaurant, the buffet is superbly curated by Head Chef Ed Boncich, who presents everything from fresh fish, Mexican specialties, and American favorites that appeal to your desires. The sophisticated Cove Restaurant, nestled atop a cliff overlooking jade waters, offers the best of both Caribbean and French cuisine. The first-class service was second only to the delectable dinner of butternut arancini and signature mahi-mahi, topped off with tiramisu crepes a la mode, featuring coconut ice cream. Rock Cottage Master Bedroom

Guests can make use of kayaks or rent the resort’s Monterey Blue boat for an excursion to Bird Island and an afternoon picnic on a secluded beach. Antigua’s sights are best experienced with Tropical Adventures, who offer half or full day jeep tours to Nelson’s Dockyard (English Harbor), Devil’s Bridge, and the Shirley Heights lookout for a quintessential Antigua panorama of sailboats, sea and rolling hills. BARBADIAN ADVENTURE

W

hile the French have St Barthelemy, the British have Barbados, which is the perfect embodiment of understated British elegance combined with the relaxed vibe of the West Indies. Barbados has a distinctly European feel marked by posh enclaves of aristocracy and Old Money families that coexist with long time Barbadian residents which gives the island a sense of community without pretension. From the sandy white beaches fronting luxurious boutique hotels to the upscale gastronomic restaurants dotted throughout the island, this slice of

paradise caters to the upscale traveler who has a sense of adventure.

Where to Stay Perhaps the most famous resort on the island is the formal Sandy Lane, known for their distinguished clientele and world renowned golf courses which has played host to plenty of moguls, A list celebrities, royalty, and one percenters seeking privacy and seclusion. For those looking to bask in relaxed luxury, The Coral Reef Club is the perfect getaway. Set in the prestigious Saint James

Parish on 12 acres of prime beachfront land, the Coral Reef Club reflects an understated beachy elegance inspired by European aristocracy and the West Indies. Instead of numbers each room is named after a different Caribbean flower, and the best rooms are the Luxury Plantation Suites located on the second floor with private plunge pools and spacious covered verandas overlooking the ocean and tropical landscape. The rooms are designed with every comfort in mind with spacious living rooms as well as four poster beds, dressing areas, and generously sized marble June 2016 • Resident • 105

bathrooms with separate Jacuzzis and showers. Take the time to explore the lush landscaped grounds where you can take refuge under the leafy canopy of palm trees or take a dip in two mosaic tiled pools on site. Additionally a range of complementary non motorized water sports are available beachside. Indulge in scrumptious Barbadian cuisine at their alfresco restaurant overlooking the ocean that serves a classic dishes infused with exotic Caribbean spices that encompass a range of fresh seafood and local specialties found on the island. For dinner enjoy a romantic beachside dinner lit by tiki lights overlooking the ocean with live entertainment.

Where to Dine By day, the hottest scene in Barbados is the Cliff Beach House that feels like Nikki Beach in St Tropez. The casual sister to the formal and adjacent Cliff Restaurant, this breezy multi level cliffside restaurant offers dramatic views over the sparkling aquamarine ocean. It’s easy to spend the afternoon here indulging in their delicious contemporary French inspired cuisine paired with bottles of French rose and refreshing cocktails amidst a dazzling backdrop set to the music of world class DJs and a scintillating afternoon swimwear fashion show. If you happen to be here on a Sunday around sunset, locals and tourists alike all end up a Mullins Beach Bar. This casual beachside shack has become a Barbadian institution, fueled by rum punches and a live rock band. For elegant dining with a magical backdrop, visit the seafood centric Tides Restaurant located on the water’s edge on the West coast of Barbados. One of the most romantic candlelit dining spots on the island, this was once a classic seaside Barbadian home built after World War 2 with coral stone and mahogany.

What to Do From polo to cricket matches, concerts and theatre, there are always plenty of cultural activities going on in the island as Barbados is not just a vacation spot but a year round destination populated by many full time residents. One of the best ways to explore the treasures beholden to this magical place is by sea. Take the Jammin’ Catamaran cruise for a fun day in the sun and snorkel in the warm aquamarine waters with ex106 • Resident • June 2016

otic tropical fish and sea turtles. The half day tour leaves in the morning with 3 snorkel stops as well as a casual buffet lunch and open bar. The DJ gets the party started and after many drinks later the scene heats up with lively dancing on the catamaran as it returns to shore. One of the hidden treasures on the island is the lush and fragrant Hunte’s Garden located in the center of Barbados’ jungle in a sink hole gully that evokes a Alice in Wonderland flair with classical music playing in the foreground. Feel like one with nature as you meander through secret pathways dotted with native flora and fauna and take the time to reflect on your beautiful surroundings on one of the antique wrought iron benches scattered throughout the garden. To learn more about the history of the island and its origins in rum making visit the 350 year old St. Nicholas Abbey and rum distillery, that is still in operation. Sample some of the island’s finest rum

along the tour which explains the history of the space through preserved ledgers from the slave trade which serve as a reminder of the past as well as the evolution of Barbados into what it is today.

How to get there The most luxurious and comfortable way to get to Barbados from New York City is via JetBlue’s premium Mint experience. The five hour journey will literally fly by as you lie in your flat bed seat that can extend up to 80.” Indulge in three seasonal tapas style plates from NYC’s trendy Saxon + Parole, and enjoy a wide choice of free entertainment from your 15” screen. The 22” wide seats are configured in rows of two and four with 4 seats offering a private suite configuration at no additional cost. This is the ultimate way to travel to a luxurious getaway. L

ocated on the tiny island of Anguilla between the beaches of Barnes and Meads bays, the 40acre Viceroy hotel is probably the most modern of all hotels located on the island. Opened in 2009, the Viceroy offers a chilled out, barefoot elegance feel with an upscale and extremely posh look. There are 166 rooms here, all with balconies, along with marble bathrooms outfitted with deep soaking tubs, and large glass windows offering unobstructed views of one of the most spectacular stretch of beach on the island. For the ultimate in Caribbean luxury, the spacious two- to five-bedroom villas offer private infinity pools and hot tubs, outdoor showers, complimentary Internet access and gourmet professional kitchens. The resort seamlessly mixes an upscale look with a laid-back, stylish feel thanks to the impeccable taste of American interior designer, Kelly Wearstler. With sleek lines, modern amenities and many art installations, the Viceroy uses earth tones, stone, and gold accents in the guest rooms with driftwood lamps and petrified-wood tables. The resort offers five upscale dining options ranging from a poolside grill to a lively, yet romantic sunset lounge. Their signature restaurant, Cobà, serves homemade pastas and seafood dishes while the sunset lounge has rum tastings, Cuban cigars, and romantic sunset views. There is also a luxurious 8,000 square foot oceanfront spa where sounds of the crashing waves will lull you into a meditative trance during spa treatments. All non-motorized activities offered are complimentary which include Hobie Cats, single and double kayaking, paddle boarding, boogie boarding, windsurfing, snorkel gear and sunfish sailing. While the Viceroy primarily attracts couples there are many activities perfect for families, with a kids club offering a Kids Kite camp where the little ones can learn Kitesurfing, with certified instructors. There are tennis courts and an array of fitness classes for the active guests but there’s always the spa for those wanting a bit of pampering. The staff is warm and friendly, and attentive to your every need. To access this slice of paradise visitors must either fly to St. Maarten and take a short ferry or flight to the island, or direct flights from San Juan, Puerto Rico. No matter how you choose to arrive, the Viceroy Anguilla will more than satisfy your need for a relaxing Caribbean getaway with a chic and sophisticated vibe. viceroyhotelsandresorts.com

The Crane, Barbados

HISTORY MEETS LUXURY BARBADOS STYLE AT

THE CRANE

its multi-million dollar expansion. Visitors to The Crane can book one of two different types of accommodations: 1887 Resort Apartments, housed in the original historic hotel, or one of the property’s new suites.

1887 Resort Apartments The Crane’s original historic hotel is comprised of 18 charming, spacious oceanfront guestrooms and suites with 12-foot ceilings, hardwood floors, exquisite antique furniture, fully equipped kitchens and spectacular views of the rugged southeastern coastline. The rooms in this part of The Crane are steeped in the rich history of Barbados, with several featuring coral stone walls that are over 200 years old. Many of the rooms in the historic hotel also feature lavish mahogany four-poster king size beds, ceiling fans, or air-conditioning; while suites offer a semi-private sitting area and fold-out couches to sleep additional guests.

Residences at The Crane The exquisite suites at The Crane, the first of which opened in the year 2001, offer resort guests a new standard of upscale vacation accommodations.

T

he Crane, set on forty acres of oceanfront land in the parish of St. Philip, on Barbados’ southeast coast, is the island’s oldest vacation resort. Conveniently located a mere six minutes east of Grantley Adams International Airport, the resort boasts a spectacular natural setting on a cliff overlooking the renowned Crane Beach, yet offers easy access to the rest of the island. Today, The Crane is comprised of the original historic hotel building, built in the late 1700’s and expanded in 1887 alongside a new, all-suite development. Since the mid-18th century, Southeastern Barbados was frequented by the island’s plantation owners and prosperous merchants. They were attracted by the cool breezes, stimulating climate 112 • Resident • June 2016

and bathing in the waters recognized for their recuperative powers. The area’s main building was a mansion known as Marine Villa, which today exists almost in its original state and forms the east section of The Crane. The style of its windows and casements suggests it was built about 1790. In 1886, civil engineer Donald Simpson purchased Marine Villa and conceived of enlarging the house and opening it as a hotel. Simpson’s hotel venture was encouraged by development of the railway in 1881 to Sunbury, St. Philip from Bridgetown. Simpson completed the first addition to Marine Villa with the addition of four coral stone apartments that comprise the south wing of the hotel. In 1988 the current owner of The Crane, Canadian Paul Doyle, bought the resort and has overseen

By marrying nineteenth century grandeur and furnishings with twenty-first century luxuries, conveniences, and amenities, The Crane has created a level of exclusive resort living while retaining the grace and elegance of its historic past. Suites at The Crane boast the finest in furniture and finishes, including hand-crafted Barbadian mahogany furniture, objects d’art, oriental carpets and traditionally high four-poster king size beds. The setting, however, provides the true feel of the resort: old-world coral stone walls, hardwood floors, 10 foot high timber tray ceilings, floor-toceiling marble bathrooms and amazing views of The Crane’s crystal clear, turquoise waters. Each full suite also features bay windows with oiled cedar shutters, spa shower with multiple shower heads, jacuzzi bath, cable TV, DVD player and VCR; double door fridge with in-door icemaker, dishwasher, washer and dryer, and cen-

tral air-conditioning from discretely hidden ducts. The world-renowned swimming pool at The Crane remains the centrepiece of this luxury resort, being set at the top of a cliff and framed by a row of classic Doric columns, overlooking the naturally spectacular Crane Beach. Guests of The Crane can also enjoy their own private pools; either a tower plunge pool or ground floor pool of up to 28 ft. in length, many possess an infinity edge, featuring breathtaking ocean views. Recently completed in winter 2007, The Crane opened the much-anticipated element of the expansion project -- the pool complex. The new pool complex encompasses four individual pools with cascading waterfalls, meandering landscaping, soft lighting and alfresco hot tub. L’Azure Restaurant at The Crane serves a range of classic and Caribbean delicacies. Best known for its creations using fresh seafood, L’Azure has achieved several distinctions for fine cuisine.

Zen features traditional Tatami rooms, an exquisite sushi bar and the option for guests to enjoy private dining. In 2009 and 2010, Zen achieved the distinction of being #1 Zagat-rated restaurant in Barbados.

Daytona

DAYTONA

hen you think of Daytona Beach, you may conjure thoughts of NASCAR and the Speedway, a thriving motorcycle community, or a town with more than 50 yearly festivals. However, Daytona Beach is much more; Daytona is home to the “World’s Most Famous Beach” that spans for 23 gorgeous miles. In the early 1900’s the beaches of Daytona began to attract adrenaline junkies who found the flat packed white sand perfect for racing who continuously set nonprofessionally competitive speed records that culminated in 1935 when Sir Malcolm Campbell drove the world famous “Bluebird” at 276 miles per hour on the beach. Today Daytona is home to fresh local dining, high-end shopping, museums, bustling nightlife, and is a lovely metropolis surrounded by charming and historic southern towns. Daytona is home to numerous oceanfront high-end hotels like the Hilton, which is situated next to the historic local amphitheater Bandshell. The hotel offers free bike rentals, access to beachfront driving, and is close to excellent locally sourced dining. However, for those of you looking for a small town experience nearby Deland and Smyrna Beach are

116 • Resident • June 2016

a great option. Deland is a sleepy southern town filled with independently owned stores, award winning boulevards, a growing farm to table restaurant scene, and wine bars. While strolling down the main avenue, you may encounter locals driving down historic Woodland Boulevard in classic cars. Conveniently located between Orlando and Daytona Beach, Deland is known for great houseboat, manatee viewing and bird watching, skydiving, golfing, fishing, and outdoor recreation on the St. Johns River. On the other hand, New Smyrna Beach is more lively as it is home to emerging local artists, and hip Flagler Ave which boasts vibrant shopping and hidden speakeasies. New Smyrna Beach possesses a distinct hometown quality reflected in the town’s architecture and landscape. And, Smyrna is an excellent place to savor fresh seafood on the waterfront, or under an umbrella at a sidewalk cafe. And now it is easier than ever for New Yorkers to visit Daytona with JetBlue’s new direct flights between New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport

and Daytona Beach International Airport. JetBlue offers the most legroom in coach based on average fleet-wide seat pitch for U.S. airlines and carries more than 32 million customers a year to 94 cities in the U.S., Caribbean, and Latin America. JetBlue now offers more flights between the Empire State and the Sunshine State than any other airline with up to 83 daily non-stops. The new route with Jetblue has undoubtedly created a gateway, for New York and this is only the beginning. The airport features a growing list of shops and dining option as well as complimentary Wi-Fi throughout the terminals. “JetBlue’s arrival in Daytona Beach is part of the overall renaissance that the greater Daytona Beach area and Volusia County is experiencing,” said Rick Carl, airport director, Daytona Beach International Airport. “Having the most convenient airport in the east central Florida region, Daytona Beach International Airport is well-suited for the partnership with JetBlue.”

NOT YOUR AVERAGE JOE A Spotlight on Joe Morton By Josh Estrin

W

ith each change of the seasons, New York City has a remarkable way of reinventing herself. Beginning with the reawakening in spring to an enthusiastic, nearly euphoric vibe as summer spreads across the city, “Lady Liberty” continues her vigilant watch over both residents and visitors alike. The Big Apple and all of the eclectic neighborhoods and boroughs that make it one of the world’s most dynamic destinations, is also home to a thriving, cultural collage of people who walk, ride, bike, and jog to the beat of a musicality that is unique to summer in this city. This is no more evident than in the ever-changing montage of the performing arts. Music, theater, dance, and the avant-garde collide in parks, streets, rooftops, and theaters, creating a delicious mix that is reflected all over the city that never sleeps. Emmy Award winning film, television and stage actor Joe Morton is part of this thriving community. Born in Harlem and raised in a military family he spent a great deal of his early life in West Germany and Okinawa before completing his schooling in New York at Hofstra University. Morton worked his way through the Broadway circuit before making his stage debut in the Tony award winning musical Hair, which led to his starring role in Raisin, the Tony award winning musical adaptation of A Raisin in the Sun. His performance garnered him a Tony nomination for Lead Actor in a Musical. Prior to his career-changing role on television’s, “Scandal,” Morton was best known for his leading role in his first film; John Sayles’, Brother from Another Planet. He is also widely recognized for his starring roles in Terminator 2: Judgement Day, Speed, the Syfy network’s Eureka, and The Cosby Show’s spin-off A Different World. Morton, a strong supporter of the continued need to address diversity in Hollywood, uses his celebrity as a platform upon which to express the need for more contemporary non-white roles in TV/film. His free time is devoted to his family, writing, playing guitar, and recording music (he enjoys singing the blues). Music has been a huge part of his life and

his talent has led him to write and score a multitude of songs for his various film and television projects. Recently, we sat down for an insightful chat. We talked about his role as “Rowan”, the merciless and sinister father to “Olivia Pope” (Kerry Washington) on ABC’s Scandal earning him bragging rights as one of television’s most despicable dads. We went on to tackle life, love, Broadway, and a few of his favorite New York City haunts including “Lilies”, the now closed “Barrymores”, and late nights at “French Roast”. Although he’s proving to be deliciously evil onscreen, in life he is a man of great conviction and strong opinions and as magnetic and magnanimous as the city he will soon be calling

his home away from home this summer.

Joshua Estrin: You were born in Harlem, one of the neighborhoods in New York City undergoing some dramatic changes. What are your thoughts on the changing face of that community? Joe Morton: That is a complex question to answer. Harlem has grown and in many ways the growth has been good, but it has changed the cultural landscape and displaced people who are simply unable to afford to the live there any longer. Any city needs to expand but with that comes sacrifice and the gap between those who have and those who don’t have has gotten much larger especially

in places like Harlem. I want to see the infusion of new ideas and new business as a good thing in the long run, but it is so very complicated and impacts so many people at so many levels.

JE: You have made a career of pushing the envelope and forcing audiences to think about some very uncomfortable yet important topics including race. Did you pick your early projects with this in mind?

JM:

When I started in the business it was a different time. The opportunities for a black actor that exist today were not available and I was unwilling to play the pimp or drug dealer. I looked for characters that had depth and had something to say. I would not say that it was strategically planned, but I would not be a stereotype and I refused to conform to any preconceived limitations.

JE: On Scandal, you are one scary father.

Do your children have anything to say about how you chose

to raise your onscreen daughter “Olivia”?

JM: I have two daughters and a son. My daughters love the show (Scandal) and the character. They actually make fun of me for the things Rowan does and for the monologues he delivers. The writing on the show is some of the best television has to offer. My son is very proud of me as well. The show is not exactly the kind of program he watches, but my daughters watch it every week and they are not the least bit afraid of me. They actually enjoy watching Rowan do the things he does knowing full well I could (and would) never impose myself on my own children the way in which he does.

JE: When the time comes for you to take your leave from this life how do you hope to be remembered?

JM: I have been asked that before and I really don’t know quite how to answer as it is not about me as much as it is how my actions impact others and

how those actions are perceived. As a father I want to be remembered as the kind of parent that my children felt they could rely upon and whom they could come to and talk about anything without fear or reservation. I also hope that I will be remembered as a loyal and trusted friend. 2016 is sure to be Joe’s busiest years yet. Morton will portray the role of NAACP leader Roy Wilkins alongside Bryan Cranston in the highly-anticipated HBO biopic All the Way, adapted from the Tonywinning Robert Schenkkan play. The productions will be directed by Jay Roach and executive produced by Steven Spielberg. Morton also returns to his theater roots this spring when he will portray the groundbreaking comedian and civil rights activist Dick Gregory in the one-man show Turn Me Loose at The Westside Theatre in New York City which runs from May through July.

Eclipsed & Fiddler on the Roof

By Kristen Oliveri

POWERHOUSE PERFORMANCES Know their Name: Eclipsed Tony-nominated play Eclipsed has been dazzling audiences since its debut on Broadway at the Golden Theater in March after a limited run at the Public Theater. This female-led and directed production, the brainchild of actor and playwright Danai Gurira, presents a powerful message to empower women and to show their resiliency and spirit in the face of war. Gurira views this production as an outlet to give voice to a movement where by the cast and crew dedicate each performance to a girl or group of girls who have been abducted all over the world—naming them individually and having a cast member proudly proclaim, “Know their name.” This production showcases a cornucopia of powerhouse female actors including Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong’o, Pascale Armand, Akosua Busia, Zainab Jah and Saycon Sengbloh. The very close-knit group of women brings the audience to Liberia in a rebel camp where they are living amidst civil war and upheaval and three of the women are “married” to a commander in the Liberian army. The story doesn’t shy away from topics like rape, violence and self-preservation, but rather puts it in the center of the conversation under the direction of Liesl Tommy. While Nyong’o gives a true tour de force performance, the scenes that are most moving and powerful are those when the four wives interact with each other, each signifying uniquely different reactions to how they’ve chosen to cope within their surroundings. A major turning point in the plotline is when emissary Rita comes in search of her daughter and decides to help these women escape to freedom. While they were all resistant, she began to break down the walls they had built up by asking for their given name, changing the course of their lives forever. While Nyong’o gives a true tour de force performance, the scenes that are most moving and powerful are those when the four wives interact with each other, each signifying uniquely different reactions to how they’ve chosen to cope within their surroundings and learn to just to survive. A turning point in the plotline is when emissary Rita comes in search of her daughter and decides to help these women escape to freedom. While they were all resistant, she began to break down the walls they had built up by asking for their given name, changing the course of their lives. Eclipsed is certainly a name that will not soon be forgotten.

Fiddler Comes Full Circle Fiddler on the Roof’s first run on Broadway came at a time when Jews in the United States were still very much assimilating into American culture. The show and its message, helped make that connection for Jewish people and non-Jewish people alike around the world promoting tolerance and understanding. Today, the show is continuing its legacy and impact for a different generation and a different circumstance. Currently starring in Fiddler on Broadway in the role of Mordcha the Innkeeper is Michael Bernardi, a theater and film actor whose father played the starring role of Tevye nearly 50 years ago. While it can be argued that he has theater in his blood, given his father and grandparents predilection for the stage, it was apparent that acting was his personal career choice too when at the age of 9, Bernardi performed in front of packed houses at the world famous Comedy Store on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles. “I grew up in a very artistic environment and have this natural inclination towards it,” said Bernardi. “When you get to connect with 300 people like that and you hear roaring laughter, you’re hooked.” Presently, Bernardi has the immense honor of putting on parts of his father’s original costume each night to perform a show he truly believes in. “When I first booked this job, I thought it was so life affirming to be connected with my father who passed away when I was a year and a half old,” he said. “It’s so exciting to also be doing a show that’s investigating the refugee crisis which helps put into context what’s going on in the world. While I recognize my specific connection to their piece, it’s meant for something so much bigger than myself.”

Broadway Shows to Watch

FROM

TRAGEDY TO MUSICAL COMEDY

The Father, Long Day’s Journey into Night, Fully Committed, and Waitress

O

n the current season of the exciting television series “The Americans,” Frank Langella is the formidable Soviet spy chief. On Broadway in The Father, he is just the opposite: an elderly man suffering from dementia. While Langella, at 78, is only two years younger than the character he plays, the actor appears in every scene and consistently dominates the stage.

André (the title character in Florian Zeller’s drama, translated from French into English by Christopher Hampton) is a proud man. An elegant figure, he constantly misplaces his watch and struggles to keep track of everything else. He can’t recognize the apartment where he lives and doesn’t remember whether the daughter he lives with is married or recognize his son-in-law or the woman hired as his caretaker. Ably directed by Doug Hughes, The Father is well acted by Kathryn Erbe as the patient daughter plus Brian Avers, Charles Borland and Kathleen McNenny. But the action revolves around Langella’s André and he is the one you won’t forget. Eugene O’Neill was unusual in that his greatest works were written after he won the Nobel Prize

for Literature. Long Day’s Journey into Night was based on O’Neill’s own family and was so personal that he stipulated that it couldn’t be performed until after his death. The masterpiece is now back on Broadway, under the direction of Jonathan Kent, and the play is still harrowing. Gabriel Byrne is well cast as James Tyrone (the retired Irish matinee idol who sold out his art for profit and who is miserly because of his fear of ending his life in the poorhouse). Jessica Lange is luminous and heartbreaking as his wife, Mary, who struggles with addiction. Michael Shannon is intense and occasionally wryly funny as the alcoholic older son Jamie. The least interesting role is by John Gallagher, Jr. as the consumptive son Edmund (based on O’Neill himself). With a running time of almost four hours, the journey is long but those interested in serious theater will not want to miss it. We could all use a laugh nowadays and Fully Committed has 40 characters who will have you in stitches. That’s because they are all played by one actor, the virtuosic Jesse Tyler Ferguson (of Modern Family). Becky Mode’s comedy deals with Sam (a struggling actor who is working at a chic restaurant

taking telephone reservations). Sam must deal with ignorant customers as well as the flighty chef and his own show business agent and acting friends/competitors. Without costume changes, Ferguson instantly shifts characters and even genders. Mode’s play (written more than 15 years ago) has been updated so that there are now jokes about Gwyneth Paltrow, among others. It’s all hilarious, thanks to Ferguson and talented director Jason Moore (of Avenue Q). Waitress (based on writer-director Adrienne Shelley’s 2007 indie film) is a musical with a comfort food locale. The protagonist Jenna is an unhappily married waitress/pie baker, who discovers she is pregnant. The quirky comedy has her falling in love with her married gynecologist. While this sounds creepy, it comes off as cute, in part because the heroine is played by Jessie Mueller, who won a Tony for Beautiful. She is just as delightful here, especially when singing the songs of Sara Bareilles while backed by an on-stage band. The supporting cast is excellent, with a standout performance by Christopher Fitzgerald as the nerdy suitor of one of the other waitresses.

The Total Bent

By Rory Winston

STEW TO PERFECTION The Total Bent: Now at the Public Theater Pictured: Curtis Wiley, Ato Blankson-Wood, and Jahi Kearse in The Total Bent, Photo credit. Joan Marcus.

W

hether Michael Jackson, Marvin Gaye or the recently departed legend Prince, many an icon has suffered at the hands of an abusive father, their respective relationships having left a distinct mark on both their lives and their creative output. Another artist who could easily lay claim to a similar set of experiences is the playwright/composer/lyricist Mark Stewart known by his stage name, Stew. In his 2008 Tony Award and Desk Drama Award winning play, Passing Strange, a song early in Act I (entitled the Baptist Fashion Show) describes how Reverend Jones revs up a crowd ‘feeling the spirit,’ while a troubled youth simultaneously calls out, “This is as phony as it gets.” Clearly Stew had unfinished business with his own preachy paterfamilias. In The Total Bent – his most recent effort – Stew manages some form of closure. Well, if not closure, then at least the right amount of soul, blues, punk and gospel-infused rock and roll to make up for any shortcomings in plot. Done in collaboration with his stage partner of many years, Heidi Rodewald, The Total Bent is a black artist’s coming-of-age story, one in which character development comes less through chronological sequence than by way of idiosyncratic memories, odd impressions and life-altering revelations. This is hardly surprising given that the process behind the finalized work is more closely akin to the construction of a band’s album than it is to the development of a musical. Instead of first finalizing a score that is then presented to a group of actors, Stew and Rodewald reworked the entirety of the play through a series of “jams” wherein parts were dropped, harmonies added, and songs and stories rearranged with the help of the ‘band members’ (performers) throughout the duration of the long rehearsal period. Likewise, most of the cast are not only excellent musicians who double as actors but are more like a collective of creative artists who have each done remarkable projects in their own right.

VONDIE CURTIS HALL (of Dreamgirls renowned) plays Joe Roy, a charismatic if oppressive bible belt singer/healer who owes his best songs to his gifted composer of a son, Marty - a Stew-like character played with just the right amount of passion and insouciance by Ato Blankson-Wood. With a hunger for creating something both profound and timely, Marty veers away from his father’s selfserving sermonizing in order to embark on a type of spirituality that is socially relevant. Marty’s religious order is that of making music, the kind of music that is capable of catalyzing socio-political change. Allowing himself to be vulnerable in front

is not relegated solely to a given actor’s execution of their role but calls into question elements that are integral the theme itself – nowhere is this more evident than when the composers themselves join the band onstage thereby breaking the illusion of a closed story. Likewise, Choreographer David Neumann seems to have a knack for allowing personal narratives to converge; while scenic designer Andrew Lieberman along with Costume designer Gabriel Berry create a timeless world by having the allegorical set of a recording studio that exists somewhere in the Deep South and clothing that evoke the 1970’s purposefully jar with the contemporary dialogue – the crisscrossing motifs allowing for timely social concerns to be raised while the issues themselves remain devoid of a specifically recognizable timeframe. With the inimitable Grammy winning Marty Beller as music director (and, incidentally, a regular member of Stew’s band Negro Problem), the play is not just a collection of anecdotes and moods but a cohesive concerto of sorts where soloists (whether in dialogue or song form) come and go making this work a veritable genre in its own right.

of a crowd, confessing publicly to his inner demons, getting all sweaty on stage and making others ready to receive catharsis via his unfiltered performance becomes Marty Roy’s evangelical mission. David Cale’s hilarious rendition of a British record producer on the verge of his big discovery lends an ironic edge to the genuinely ambitious aspirations of our hero, illuminating the artifice that exists behind even the most authentic art.

In a sense, the unique construction of the play is alluded to in its very title – meaning, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Unfulfilled Dreams speech wherein he stated: “God does not not judge us by the separate incidents or the separate mistakes that we make, but by the total bent of our lives.” In the case of this work: it is not just scenes and songs, themes and moods, stories and allegories but a living enactment of a complete concept album before a live audience. As albums go, The Total Bent reflects the bent of Stew’s own life. Made of the finest musical ingredients and Stewed (sic) to perfection, it made me want to yell out the words of the Prince classic: “All the critics love you in New York.” And if they don’t, they should.

Directed with perfect pacing by Joanna Settle, the play makes us feel as if we were partaking in a creative process as much as bearing witness to a testament. This is not to say that anything is improvised; but the story retains an open-endedness, one that is subject to reinterpretation. Here nuance

SUMMER STARTS WITH

SUMMER STRAND Hello Summer Strand, creator of Summer-Fit.com

S

ummers relationship with her girls is very special. Their love and devotion means the world to her, she cooks for them every day, makes sure they stay on top of their training, and spends oodles of time, telling them how much she loves them. Their health and well-being are her top priorities. Nothing makes her happier than to see them content. Summers girls completely changed her life; she doesn’t even remember what it was like before the girls. She started with DaisyGirl. DaisyGirl came along at just the right time, a time when Summer was going thru transition. Having left a successful career as a dancer, Summer was to embark on a new and challenging world of fitness, and personal training. The amazing doggie world forced Summer out of her shell and as they say the rest is history. By socializing with other dog lovers, Summer states she is way more happier now then in her twenties, but looks 18. Lucky lady… Her DaisyGirl saw her through thick and thin, and has given her unmeasurable joy. After awhile she added Amazing Grace when DaisyGirl was 7 years old, and a year later got Angel Song and it has just gotten better for Summer and her growing family.. Summer and her girls enjoy themed charity doggie events, they wear identical costumes and work with several seamstresses for a professional result. They have won trophies medals and awards. Summer and her girls raise much needed funds for animal and rescue shelters.. Awareness is very important, and why not have fun doing it After a few years in the doggie community, Summer decided to develop a way for her clients to get fit and further bond with their companions, she focuses on smaller pets, and cooperative cats. She calls it “Get PetFit with Summer” it’s a program

that tones the human body and engages the pets mind. After all if she gets her clients to stretch like her dogs and cats its half the battle..Faster, Longer, Better, Stronger. As you can tell, by now Summer is obsessed with her girls, she does her very best to make them as happy as possible. Funny thing is they don’t have to do anything in particular to make her happy. Just by being there has helped her to be happy and calm. It’s a special feeling she wishes foreverybody. Take good care of your dog, and your life will be amazing! She truly enjoys scheduling her life around her girls, and as long as they are safe, She will bring them everywhere she goes. Her celebrity clients love it when she brings any one of her girls to an in-home session. It makes everything go smoother, people relax and laugh even more, and are just thrilled to have a pup there. When she brings one of her girls shopping, she brightens the day of everyone they come in contact with. It’s so exhilarating to see their joy. Faster; Longer; Better; Stronger Summer-Fit.com
