Publisher's Note Marriage is not only a ritual of two love birds sharing each other’s passion, it’s more than that. It’s also accepting the odds and chaos that comes with it along the way, together. Admit it or not, money, most of the time, is the root cause of it; from coming late home from work having limited time for family, drinking and partying with friends ‘til dawn down to not having enough budget to buy necessaries for you and your family, with or without it, chaos. Money if not spent wise is a pity. We don’t want ending up saying, “I could’ve just bought this instead of this” or “I could’ve saved for it” worst, “I shouldn’t have invested this much, now we’re broke.” New year, new beginnings, new memories. Inside this issue, we have included the wisest of your money can avail and invest intofrom pre to post marriage necessities, you might want to remember and get the most out of this once in a lifetime event right? Also included in this issue are varieties of condominiums in the metro worth all the investment for your future family. If you want a convenient and ideal way of living in the heart of the city; accessible transportation, near hospitals, schools and universities, and malls and groceries, almost perfect for a Metro wise lifestyle, there are lots from this issue to choose from. However, if you want a soothing cool breeze, serene surroundings and away from noise, Club Balai Isabel is always a wise choice. This condotel resort in Talisay Batangas is a perfect place to commune with nature. This is not only an advertisement but also a testimonial. I have been to and tried almost all the services of each and cliché as it may sound, words are not enough to describe it. The magazine doesn’t only advertise what’s in and fab, the people behind it also believe in the integrity of each company, real estate, and people it advertises. The Wedding Magazine believes in the value of wise spent money and worthy investment. It offers a sensible idea of what marriage should be like before, during and after it. Enjoy browsing our first issue for the year. Wait for the upcoming issues and I assure you that you’ll get more good reads and tips on love and marriage.

Of Life and Love

The only thing that’s certain is uncertainty. Life is change and growth and evolution, which can be exhilarating but change can also feel taxing and painful. Change creates new tensions and uncertainties in our lives. There are so many events over which we have no control. Can you let go of control? In doing so, you are able to step back and appreciate the wonder of our world and learn to embrace uncertainty, a fearsome, yet beautiful certainty of life.

To embrace uncertainty is one of the highest levels of spiritual growth. It demands a high level of spiritual fitness. We have all had moments of great clarity, when the world revolves and spins in perfect harmony with our own rhythm, like a precisely calibrated grandfather clock. You seek to find the highest level of your spiritual development. This is your enlightenment. As you grow and learn, new ascendancies offer greater rewards. One of these gifts and skills is an ability to embrace Uncertainty. All you can do is exhale. Breathe deeply. Relentlessly ride on through the cycles of your life. To embrace uncertainty in Love and Life, you need an understanding of the world and your place in it. Look for the interconnectivity in all things. You are a part of the network. You will come to appreciate the joy of change, like a cheese connoisseur favors a washed rind. We are not programmed to embrace uncertainty and fear. It goes against our nature. It triggers our fight or flight instincts. Carefully examine the situation. Put a light into the dark places. Dig deep and objectively and you will begin to understand what you fear. In the end, it is all quite simple. You will find your worries are baseless or understandable. There are many layers of confusion to sort through when we examine what we are afraid of. All it takes is time and clarity.

8

FIL-AM WEDDING JOURNAL MAGAZINE

This level of objectivity is required to embrace the uncertainties of Love. In Love, you bond for the comfort and security of a safe place. Safety is generally incompatible with change and this is where the danger lies. You must step back and always keep an eye on your relationship from a distance. Perspective is oxygen to Love. Sometimes you get so confused and enmeshed in the details, it is easy to lose sight of the big picture of the grand design. This perspective will remind you that Love is like a river - it keeps rolling along. The stability of your Love is as secure as a wide raft on a wild river ride. Your Love will always be tossed about, cresting waves and plunging down the trough. But you stay together. Your ideal relationship is akin to a long-lasting, deeply felt friendship. You have a partner with whom you will navigate Life. The unit that you create, by its nature, is always growing and evolving. Uncertainty in Love is like fertilizer for a flower. It keeps things fresh and exciting. Love does not have to be uncertain or suspicious. Together, you can make an adventure of the rocks and potholes in the road of your journey. You must treat all of the hardships that Life tosses in your way as grand entertainment. You must have faith in the evolution of your Love, the belief that your Love

will triumph through all challenges, evolutions and uncertainties. This is how you embrace uncertainty. This is how you embrace Life. Find comfort in the process of the journey. Where does uncertainty originate? Why do we doubt? If your sweet pure soul were never influenced, you would never know uncertainty. Other people have influenced your Life. Circumstances, tragic and transcendent, have forged your character. You have been taught to worry about many things. Use this knowledge to maintain your perspective. You can disown the worry. On a physical level, laughter is a fast and easy way to embrace uncertainty. Laughter can relax you. It can cut a bully of a problem down to size. You don’t need a joke to laugh. You can fake it. Your body does not have a sense of humor, but it does know the physical sensations of laughter. When you laugh, you breathe deeply, using all of your lungs. Your body moves and relaxes. Laugh and you will embrace uncertainty. To laugh is to breathe. Embracing uncertainty is one of the most difficult things you can ever do. The action resides on the highest levels of spiritual growth. This is the goal for the enlightened: To embrace uncertainty.

Beauty and Perfection

By: Kaye Mangabat

Fashion, style, latest trends – these three will never miss a woman’s bucket, especially those who refer themselves as “IN”. These days, beauty is defined by what we see in media – that’s why lots of us are strongly influenced by it. And I admit I’m one of the victims. I was born with a huge athletic thighs and legs like my mom. (Ohh the genes! She could have just blessed me the chromosomes of her pointed nose, but no I had her legs instead, of all things, her legs. ) I have been struggling with these since I reached maturity. I was called “balyena”, “amazona”, “kapre” - yadayada. Name it! I’d be happy to hear more. But it came to a point where I just have to accept and deal with what I have, because I can’t do anything about it. I have been blessed with a good pair of functioning legs, so why complain right? Years passed and I saw a glitch that can actually make things different. And there you go, I enrolled in a gym. Booyah! I attended my weights training class every day for 2-3 months. I dedicated my time to it because I really wanted my legs to slim down a little. And hey, all the sweat and pain paid off! I was so fulfilled after those months of working out. After that, I can confidently flaunt my legs and wear shorts as much as I want to. (Ha. Ha. Who’s balyena now?) Til… I became lazy. I stopped hitting the gym coz I started working. I ate a lot from the food coverage I was doing for my job. (When you’re a reporter, almost everything comes for free. Yey! But nay! LEGS) My legs became huge again within a snap! Ha! Joke is on me. But instead of fats, I got muscles - firm legs, with BIG muscles. And then a blessing came. I saw an ad on Facebook from a Korean Beauty company, Yakson House, saying they need a “Beauty Editor”, so I applied and luckily I was picked. They asked me to write for them in exchange of 10 free sessions of one of their products. First thing that came into my mind – legs. When everything is settled, contract agreement, booking reservations, taking photos, I attended the first session. It was a leg slimming program! Yey! It was my first time to get a slimming program. Never in my life I planned to get this kind of products (but I always

10

FIL-AM WEDDING JOURNAL MAGAZINE

daydream about it) because - first it’s costly, second it’s costly, and third IT’S COSTLY. (I hope I reiterate it enough) But see, I got it for free so, why not? So here’s what happened – Miss Yumin Kim, the owner, asked me to change my clothes first. They have a pair of short and a shirt inside the room where they do the program. After I changed, we started with a “Golki Massage”. Miss Yumin Kim described it as a “bone-to-bone” massage. She did it to me herself. She used her arm bones to massage all my leg bones - ankles and thighs included too. And ooh! I can tell that she’s strong! Having big legs like mine, I was impressed. Ha! She's really strong. It was relaxing but a little painful. After the golki massage, she asked her assistant to come and do the next step. Here, she used a Kalsa – a plateliked ceramic with a hole in the middle – to scrub my legs. And hey, when I say scrub, I mean SCRUB. She did it with force and it was so painful that it comes to a point I had bruises already. But I didn’t bother. I can tolerate the pain, I conditioned my mind to tolerate the pain – for a better looking legs. The last part was Electrotherapy – it comes with the aid of a slimming machine. It was said to help lose fats, tone muscles, improve blood circulation, eliminate body toxins and increase metabolism. That's how the process works. Massage - Scrub Electrotherapy. I had done three sessions, there’s seven left. So far, it was good and I can see some changes already. But heads up, this is not advisable for people with low tolerance for pain. Wait for the next issue and follow my journey. Know more about their company, their boutique, their services and products, their offers, and their people. Yaksonmyungga is located in G4 Perla Mansion, 117 Don C. Palanca St., Legazpi Village 8929441, Makati City.

About Love

“What is love” was the most searched phrase on Google in 2012, according to the company. In an attempt to get to the bottom of the question once and for all, the Guardian has gathered writers from the fields of science, psychotherapy, literature, religion and philosophy to give their definition of the much-pondered word.

The physicist: ‘Love is chemistry’ Biologically, love is a powerful neurological condition like hunger or thirst, only more permanent. We talk about love being blind or unconditional, in the sense that we have no control over it. But then, that is not so Al-Khalili surprising since love is basically chemistry. While lust is a temporary passionate sexual desire involving the increased release of chemicals such as testosterone and oestrogen, in true love, or attachment and bonding, the brain can release a whole set of chemicals: pheromones, dopamine, norepinephrine, serotonin, oxytocin and vasopressin. However, from an evolutionary perspective, love can be viewed as a survival tool – a mechanism we have evolved to promote long-term relationships, mutual defence and parental support of children and to promote feelings of safety and security. • Jim Al-Khalili is a theoretical physicist and science writer The Psychotherapist: ‘Love has many guises’

Lippa Perry

Unlike us, the ancients did not lump all the various emotions that we label “love” under the one word. They had several variations, including:

Philia which they saw as a deep but usually non-sexual intimacy between close friends and family members or as a deep bond forged by soldiers as they fought alongside each other in battle. Ludus describes a more playful affection found in fooling around or flirting. Pragma is the mature love that develops over a long period of time between long-term couples and involves actively practising goodwill, commitment, compromise and understanding. Agape is a more generalised love, it’s not about exclusivity but about love for all of humanity. Philautia is self love, which isn’t as selfish as it sounds. As Aristotle discovered and as any psychotherapist will tell you, in order to care for others you need to be able to care about yourself. Last, and probably least even though it causes the most trouble, eros is about sexual passion and desire. Unless it morphs into philia and/or pragma, eros will burn itself out.

The Philosopher: ‘Love is a passionate commitment’ The answer remains elusive in part because love is not one thing. Love for parents, partners, children, country, neighbour, God and so on all have different qualities. Each has its variants – blind, one-sided, tragic, steadfast, fickle, Julian Baggini reciprocated, misguided, unconditional. At its best, however, all love is a kind a passionate commitment that we nurture and develop, even though it usually arrives in our lives unbidden. That’s why it is more than just a powerful feeling. Without the commitment, it is mere infatuation. Without the passion, it is mere dedication. Without nurturing, even the best can wither and die. • Julian Baggini is a philosopher and writer The Romantic Novelist: ‘Love drives all great stories’ What love is depends on where you are in relation to it. Secure in it, it can feel as mundane and necessary as air – you exist within it, almost unnoticing. Deprived of it, it can feel like an obsession; all consuming, a physical pain. Jojo Moyes Love is the driver for all great stories: not just romantic love, but the love of parent for child, for family, for country. It is the point before consummation of it that fascinates: what separates you from love, the obstacles that stand in its way. It is usually at those points that love is everything. • Jojo Moyes is a two-time winner of the Romantic Novel of the Year award The Nun: ‘Love is free yet binds us’

Love is all of the above. But is it possibly unrealistic to expect to experience all six types with only one person. This is why family and community are important.

Love is more easily experienced than defined. As a theological virtue, by which we love God above all things and our neighbours as ourselves for his sake, it seems remote until we encounter it enfleshed, so to say, in the life of another – in Catherine Wybourne acts of kindness, generosity and self-sacrifice. Love’s the one thing that can never hurt anyone, although it may cost dearly. The paradox of love is that it is supremely free yet attaches us with bonds stronger than death. It cannot be bought or sold; there is nothing it cannot face; love is life’s greatest blessing.

• Philippa Perry is a psychotherapist and author of Couch Fiction

• Catherine Wybourne is a Benedictine nun From: http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2012/dec/13/what-is-love-five-theories

Perspectives

By: Joel Bautista

Wedding is a celebration of life. The coming together of two people who have decided that tying the knot and the task of procreation is a privilege given as a gift by the Divine Providence above. And yes not everyone is given this privilege to walk down the aisle.

Indeed, everything is an option - to be bonded or to forever be in the confinement of singlehood in their lifetime, whether it’s a choice, a circumstance or even vocation to serve God. It is taken that the bride is the centerpiece of all these wedding preparation and time and again she gets the center of attraction of everyone commencing from the ceremony to the banquet to the reception. Every detail of the bride is to be taken notice from top downwards with her radiance. As the saying goes, “All brides are beautiful on their wedding day”. Coming up with a model bride, Art Personas Management thru Junel Quiñones was generous enough to allow Ivana Pacis to be our epitome of a modern bride which will set all brides to be with their inspirations as goddess of beauty their own way. Preparing Ivana was one of the most challenging processes. Jackie Rivera, a world class hair and make-up artist was commissioned for this aspect of the shoot and the result of the hair and make-up is nothing compared to any artist I›ve known. Stunning indeed leaving his name with his title and the big surprise is that his rates are reasonably priced using upscale and branded names being used today. Working with him side by side in a real wedding of mine as a wedding designer has always been an enchanting experience for me every time. Rosie de Vera of Flowers n Foliage is someone that I can

30

FIL-AM WEDDING JOURNAL MAGAZINE

be proud of. It only took me a phone call about half-an hour to prepare the bridal bouquet for the shoot - a veteran wedding supplier for weddings and other events alike. Working with Flowers n Foliage is the result of a veteran professional florist, a true word to its sense. Speaking of professionalism, Wedding photographer Chito Ignacio is someone that I can speak well of. He knows his technical. His aesthetics is incomparable and is not a commercial boring photographer but rather a very enhancing artist in his own way. So how could I go wrong with Chito - an outstanding professional in his own rights. He makes sure that he upgrades his skills and lives up with modern photography. Lastly, how can we go wrong with Dusit Thani Manila›s grandiosity? We chose this venue not just for its exotic interiors but because of the hospitality of the people in this hotel. My appreciation goes to Ms. Anne de Vera, the hotel›s Director of Events. It was indeed a fun shoot with Ivana exhibiting her prowess as a professional model. Her potential to be big is simply exuding. The entire crew and friends were all out to support. It was a fulfilling experience. The time and efforts that everyone contributed to this activity is well recognized. As the saying goes, "All's well that ends well" And we lived up to that.
