Astoria’s

Holiday Ownership First introduced in the 1960s, holiday ownership is a concept started by a ski resort owner in the French Alps that involves of owning a right to use a property in a particular length of time. Over the years, the concept has been refined and holiday ownership has continually pleased its members. Around 2006, Club Astoria introduced the holiday ownership concept in the country to its valuable clients and until now, Club Astoria manages to be the leading and most trusted brand when it comes to holiday ownership. Its aim is to give their clients the opportunity to have a vacation home without them having to build one on their own. Holiday ownership or time sharing is an advantage to those who take vacations on key holidays as it is not affected by the increasing rate of rooms, which is also dependent on the season. More so, clients can enjoy staying on exclusive hotels and resorts that are for members only. Club Astoria members are also privileged to stay on hotels and resorts from different parts of the world that are members of Club Astoria’s exchange program. Late next year, Astoria Palawan will be soon operational and exclusive perks await Club Astoria members. Ric Valenzuela, project director of the Club Astoria Company, also encourages newlywed couples to be members of Club Astoria. “We really don’t consider it as an investment but newlywed couples will enjoy the benefits of being members as their family grows and demand for more time together as family,” Valenzuela said. According to Valenzuela, the membership lasts for thirty years and transferable. “By the time you reach the thirtieth year of your membership, I am definitely sure that you have already maximized the benefits and you will say to yourself that it is worth it,” Valenzuela added. As the Astoria Company continuously develops key resorts in the country, they would want to open up the membership program to more people, especially the Filipino-Americans, for them to experience the privileges of being a Club Astoria member. Club Astoria commits itself to the highest quality to deliver whatever it is they promised to their members. Its dedication to serve fuels the Club Astoria staff to build long term relationship with its clients by earning their trust and confidence to Astoria company’s services and products. Monet Lu

A TESTIMONY TO THE BEAUTY MASTER

After many years in the beauty profession, Monet Lu of Monet Salon has become the Beauty Master within the salon industry. For so many years he still actively performs for hair and make-up services, including wedding services – and his clients are pleased every time. Below is a testimony from a client that had her wedding serviced by Monet earlier this September. Monet and his team were truly honored to have a part in Mr and Mrs Salve and Jeffrey Esguerra wedding. "Choosing Monet Lu to do my hair and make up on my wedding day was one of the best decisions Jeff and I made when planning our wedding. Having heard about his amazing hair and make up magic through my sister Ara, friends, celebrities, and the Filipino community here and abroad, I knew that he was extremely talented and experienced. I like how Monet Lu handled our first meeting which pretty much sealed the deal. When he says personal consultation, he meant he is there with a service so personable. What I wasn't expecting was the calm, yet fun and professional vibe Monet brings along. Throughout my appointments with him, he was entirely focused on me and my vision of the wedding. Not one moment was spent worrying or stressing about how my hair or makeup would look. During my trials, he really tried to capture what I wanted. He listened to my feedback and made sure that I looked my self only prettier on my big day. He also made suggestions on how to coordinate a clean

classy look for my bridal party. When the wedding day came, Monet Lu and her crew were on time, well equipped and impeccably presented as always- further confirming my confidence in him. They were all very friendly and did an amazing job especially since I had 6 bridesmaids plus 2 moms and 4 grown up flower girls! Monet Lu worked with me and my overly obsessive requests over and over until my hair and makeup were perfect. The result translated so well in my wedding photos such that I was glowing, but in such a natural way. My bridesmaids were so glamorous. They all loved Joey Buscay and Weng for their smokey look! Even the boys got their grooming done too. In fact, the whole wedding entourage looks spectacular! I couldn't have been happier with the work that Monet Lu and his crew had done. Monet Lu is a great professional and his team was also top-notch. I highly recommend his services to anyone who wants to look flawless on their special occasion. You won't be disappointed in the quality provided by Monet Lu." From: Salve Claro Esguerra, Sept. 16 Wedding at Pacific Palms Resort City of Industry Ca For a complimentary consultation for your wedding and all occasion call Monet Salon at 213 216-4923 or go to www.monetsalon.com for all the services and locations

Of Love, Wedding, and Marriage Lessons we learn from the big screen

The Silver Screen provides us, viewers, a glimpse of reality - its triumphs and struggles. It is an excellent tool, a venue to show different interpretations of human relationships and emotions. We’ve seen it a countless time how people fall in love and fall out of love and while it may be true that love is blind, we must all agree that marriage is the eye-opener. Most of us, in one point of our lives, commit ourselves to believe in fairytales, “happily ever after”, and perfect on-screen married couples. While there are a lot of good films that talk about wedding and marriage, we’ve listed below some of the best films that celebrate the joys and pains of the “ever after” and its lessons that you and your partner may take note on your own marital journey. UP (2009) Who would have thought that a rich story about love and marriage is hidden in the 2009 animated movie about a flying house, a talking dog, and a pesky child? Beset with grief after losing his childhood sweetheart and partner for life Ellie, Carl decided to carry on Ellie’s memory to have an unexpected journey to South America to visit the Teipus Mountain in Venezuela with a young Wilderness Explorer named Russell. The lesson: The film is a sweet ode about the joy of sharing one’s life to another person regardless of the pains one endured and expectations that didn’t materialize. The quote: Thanks for the adventure. Now go have one of your own. Shall We Dance (2004) John Clark, a successful lawyer, begins to get bored with his perfect family life and decides to enroll himself in a dancing class with a beautiful dance instructor, which leads his wife to think that he is cheating on her. Due to the language of dance, the married couple has rekindled their love and affection to each other. The lesson: Complacency can kill the relationship. At one point of your married life, both of you might feel that life is routinary and boring and this may lead you or your partner search for happiness somewhere else. Always find ways to stay in touch together, bring back the feeling of excitement when both of you are just dating. The quote: We need a witness to our lives. There’s a billion people on the planet... I mean, what does any one life really mean? But in a marriage, you’re promising to care about everything. The Runaway Bride (1999) Maggie Carpenter is dubbed “The Runaway Bride” by the tabloid as she left three men in the altar on their wedding day all caught on tape. On the other hand, Ike Graham, a New Yorker reporter, makes an article about her and falls in love with her. Both of them are becoming more

14

FIL-AM WEDDING JOURNAL MAGAZINE

attracted to each other and Maggie realizes that she needs to face her fear. The lesson: Know yourself and be yourself. You don’t need to keep on reinventing yourself to fit your relationship. Marriage will not change who you are but will nourish you for the better. The quote: Look, I guarantee there’ll be tough times. I guarantee that at some point, one or both of us is gonna want to get out of this thing. But I also guarantee that if I don’t ask you to be mine, I’ll regret it for the rest of my life, because I know, in my heart, you’re the only one for me. My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002) The romantic- comedy film tells the story of Fotoula “Toula” Portokalos, a Greek-American woman who falls in love with a nonGreek school teacher Ian Miller. The wedding preparation becomes disastrous as the family of Toula incorporates Greek traditions to her wedding but still, turns out right in the end. The lesson: Our families and cultural traditions are all part of who we are even if they drive us crazy sometime. It is still best to share that special moment with the people that have loved us our entire lives. The quote: Don’t let your past dictate who you are, but let it be part of who you will become. Father of the Bride (1991) Played by Steve Martin, George Banks is having a difficult time of giving his daughter’s hand to marriage. From crazy wedding planners to prewedding disagreement, the film captures the stresses and joys of not only the couple but also of their parents as the big day approaches. The lesson: It will always be difficult for a Father to let her little girl get married. No matter how old you are or how self-sufficient you are, your father will always be protective of you. The quote: Who presents this woman? This woman? But she’s not a woman. She’s just a kid. And she’s leaving us.

Couples, after months’ of preparation, can relax through the resort’s superb amenities. Enjoy a day of water activities around the lake or take a plunge in the resort’s mega pool. Or better yet, be rejuvenated while in the Talisay Garden Pool. Club Balai Isabel is indeed a romantic wedding destination to fulfill your dream wedding. Its beauty and space is enough to be creative in so many ways. Not only the couple but families and friends will surely enjoy this piece of paradise.

A Love Crafted by God’s Hands Destiny may be a good word to describe the love story of Leo & Charmaine, a love set and planned by God at the right time, at the right place. Their relationship started in the Philippines when both are getting ready to leave for a work opportunity in the US. Charmaine left the Philippines first and after 8 months, Leo followed. It was not that easy as others would expect because they needed to be in 2 different states. Exchanges of flights every month or two from New York to North Carolina and vice versa as well as every evening of praying and reading devotional books together through internet video strengthened their relationship. They decided to get married and be blessed in a Catholic church in Vigan City Philippines on the 22nd of May 2012. We Met … On December of 2008, we were introduced to each other by a common friend when he visited the hospital where he used to work and where I was working at that time. We Both Enjoy … Our love for food and cooking, especially pasta dishes, brings us much closer together. The Proposal … He surprised me on my birthday with a dinner at World Yacht cruising along Hudson River in New York. He brought me on the upper deck and once

the ship approaches Statue of Liberty, he knelt down and popped up the question! The Ceremony … We had a traditional Philippine Catholic wedding at St. Paul Metropolitan Cathedral in Vigan City. The Theme … We are both delighted with the colors of our birthstones, green peridot and violet amethyst. With me being a pasta lover and him a wine drinker and grapes addict, we came up with a Tuscan theme combining the green and dark purple color of grapes which further leads us to depicting the sophistication of the modern Tuscan interior designs such as candelabras with crystals and the elegance of the lace depicting the old Tuscan table cloths & doilies.

received the blessing of God to our relationship and the presence of our close friends and family as well as the significant people in our lives made it even heartwarming and unforgettable. We Honeymooned In … We enjoyed each other’s company under the sunny shore of Myrtle Beach South Carolina. We also revisited Biltmore in Asheville, NC where we spent quality time reminiscing the wedding while enjoying glasses of wine and plates of pasta after roaming around the beautiful gardens, the antler village and winery and the vast land of the Vanderbilt.

My Dress … A Mon Cheri bridal A-line gown made with English net, strapless neckline embellished with handbeaded Swarovski crystals, directionally ruched bodice, cascading hand-bead lace down skirt and scalloped hemline Antique lace that extends to chapel length train. The Vow… Traditional vows from the church were exchanged by the bride & groom. It Felt Very Us… We personalized the wedding with DIY projects. We have bonded and enjoyed the shopping and making of these projects. This occasion must be one of the momentous events in our lives because we finally

Manila Hotel: The

Serving Beautiful Stories, 100 Years and Counting

26

FIL-AM WEDDING JOURNAL MAGAZINE

A hundred years after it was built, surely it is not the ultra modern amenities that the hotel now has or the meticulously decorated rooms and suites that make the Manila Hotel what it is today. And though the service provided by their staff is impeccable, it is truly more than that. It is the solemn knowledge that this beautiful hotel has been witness to many course changing events that the entire world remembers and passed on to future generations in history books. It is the undeniable fact that if there ever was a national hotel for the Philippines, the Manila Hotel would be it, no questions asked. The rich reservoir of stories that the Manila Hotel has in its possession is priceless. And it is this precious trove of stories that the hotel passes on to every guest who steps through its doors. Dine in any of the hotel’s restaurants or spend a night in their rooms to automatically share history with the notable personalities who have stayed at the hotel over the years: General Douglas MacArthur, Ernest Hemingway, the Beatles, Prince Charles, Neil Armstrong, Marlon Brando, Michael Jackson, US Presidents Dwight Eisenhower and Lyndon B. Johnson, and many others. It was July 4, 1912 when the Manila Hotel opened its doors for the first

time. Today, over a hundred years later, the same hotel that survived a war, witnessed a revolution, and saw the ousting of two presidents, is paradoxically, also one of the “newest,” most modern hotels in the country. This is due to the series of renovations that its Executive Vice President, Enrique Y. Yap, Jr., has implemented in the past four years. “On our centennial anniversary, it is important to note that the Manila Hotel is not just celebrating its rich history, but is also working very hard to bring the hotel to the next 100 years,” says Yap. “All of our rooms and suites were carefully renovated and modernized to reflect the perfect marriage of tradition with modern luxury.” True enough, the hotel’s grand lobby now gleams with energy and life. And touring around the new pool and garden area, which has the newly launched Health Club and Spa, gives one the feeling that he is standing right in the middle of two different eras, right on the spot where history blends well with urbanity and avant-garde opulence. For the hotel’s 100th anniversary, the hotel kicked off its celebration with an exclusive Centennial Ball on the 4th of July. Some of the country’s most notable personalities attended the event, making the party almost like a modern day reenactment of the hotel’s inaugural bash exactly one hundred years ago where hundreds of elegantly attired guests were invited for a dinner of American roast, Philippine lobster and French champagne. On the 6th of October this year, the Manila Hotel is once again offering the first one hundred guests a special rate of P1,912 NET for an overnight stay in one of their Superior Deluxe Rooms. Something that the hotel is not likely to do any time soon, this special rate is the Manila Hotel’s way of thanking its guests for their unwavering support over the years.

In the hotel’s events buffet restaurant, Café Ilang-Ilang, an additional buffet station has been set-up to feature historic dishes that include the favorite dishes of President Manuel L. Quezon and that of Gen. Douglas MacArthur during the six years that he stayed at the Manila Hotel. A sumptuous treat for those who want to have a taste of history and mouthwatering cuisine in one bite, Café Ilang-Ilang’s tenth buffet station will still be available for the whole month of October this year. Likewise, the Taproom bar of the Manila Hotel is also offering an iconic drink called the Chamberlain. Discovered by Mr. Yap through an original 1938 black and white print ad for Gilbey’s Gin, the attention grabbing headline was “The Chamberlain as they mix it in Manila.” Upon reading the text through, one soon finds out that the ad features the drink as Manila Hotel’s own creation and pronouncing it to be “one of the world’s great drinks!” Poised to give the Singapore Sling a run for its money, the Chamberlain is definitely a drink one must try while he still can. “It is a good story if it’s like Manila Hotel,” Ernest Hemingway writes. With Manila Hotel’s commitment to maintain the elegance of tradition while tirelessly striving to exceed the expectations of its modern guests, indeed, the story just keeps getting better and better.
