Renfrew councillor Tom Anderson has filed for the office of mayor. Anderson filed Jan. 15, five days after Valley Heritage Radio morning man Andrew Cartwright filed for mayor. Cartwright has since withdrawn his name. Anderson joins Callum Scott in the race for Renfrew’s top political post. With Anderson no longer in the running for a position of councillor, this means council will feature at least three new councillors for the next term. Andrew Evans and Gail Cole have already said they’re not seeking re-election. Anderson, who works at Renfrew Home Hard-

ware Building Centre, has worked three terms as councillor. The 58-year-old says he was weighing the options of running for councillor or mayor. “I had to consider family, work, time commitments and how I could best utilize my skills and expertise. I think the best fit is mayor.” Anderson, who grew up in Renfrew, says the head of council should have municipal experience. “It’s difficult to lead if you don’t know how the place operates.” The focuses in the next term of office, says Anderson, needs to include economic development and effective communication with residents. Winter Frewfest Saturday at Ma-Te-Way Park and Bonnechere River Peter Clark peter.clark@metroland.com

Sports - The Ma-Te-Way Activity Centre is the place to be this weekend. Renfrew’s fourth annual Frewfest winter carnival to the theme of fire and ice, and hosted by the Renfrew Parks and Recreation Department, runs Friday and all day Saturday both inside and out at Ma-Te-Way Park. The event starts Friday at

6 p.m. as everyone is invited to join an outdoor skate. Complimentary hot dogs and hot chocolate will be served. That leads into what should be a pretty good junior B hockey game as the Valley Division-leading hometown Renfrew Timberwolves take on Shawville’s Pontiac Juniors at 8 p.m. Frewfest runs all day Saturday and includes an ice fishing derby hosted by the Renfrew firefighters from 7

a.m. to 5 p.m. Registration is at the Bonnechere River boat launch and is free for children. Prizes will be awarded at 5:15 p.m. Canadian Tire is also supplying fishing gear for those who wish to participate but don’t own a fishing rod, etc. Anglers can bring their catch back to the boat launch for the weigh-in. Other events running from 10 a.m. through 3 p.m. at

Ma-Te-Way Park are a snow sculpture competition, sliding on the toboggan hill, NHA/NHL Museum display, outdoor skating, a military display and petting zoo. Other events include: • 10 a.m., Little Red Theatre; • 11 a.m., horse-drawn sleigh rides; • noon, Yaki entertainment; • and 1 p.m., vintage snow machines.

Among the day’s highlights are a bonfire with marshmallows at 5:30 p.m., followed by fireworks at 6:30 p.m. Frewfest wraps up with indoor skating at the Ma-TeWay Activity Centre at 7:30 p.m. Recreation program director Jo-anne Caldwell invites everyone to get out and enjoy the day with the family. “It is definitely a family event,” she said.
