"[Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke] MP Gallant's insinuation that the federal government is wilfully flooding properties for political reasons is categorically false," said Emily Harris, a spokesperson at the ministry of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, via email. Following several posts on
Gallant's website with titles such as "Why are Trudeau Liberals aiming for annual flooding of the Ottawa River?" and "Is bad politics behind recent flooding?" she sent a letter to the prime minister on July 3. BEACHBURG RESIDENT CROWNED MISS TEEN CANADA JONATHAN MULVIHILL jmulvihill@metroland.com Emma Jeapes is the new Miss Teen Canada for 2019. The Beachburg resident was crowned at the national pageant in Toronto on July 14 after a week of rehearsals, special outings, interviews, photo shoots and preliminaries. In addition to this victory, she was also awarded the title of Top Fundraiser for the Children's Wish Foundation of Canada, the official charity of the Miss Teen Canada Pageant. Jeapes will spend the year attending events and assisting charity organizations across the country. She will also represent Canada at the international level. Last year, Jeapes was
crowned Miss Teen Eastern Ontario at the pageant in Renfrew. Since then, the 19-year-old travelled across Eastern Ontario raising awareness and funds for childhood cancer. Jeapes is an on-ice volunteer for The Little Sens Learn to Skate Program through Hockey Canada as well as the Valley Warriors Hockey Program for children with exceptional needs. She is also part of the 4H Valley Calf Club of Renfrew County. This fall, in addition to her Miss Teenage Canada commitments, Jeapes will be attending Carleton University in Ottawa to complete her Bachelor of Arts with honours double majoring in French and English.

Board and the International Joint Commission recalculate the volume of water and the flow rate that can be safely released. Trudeau's office plans to respond with a letter but didn't agree to send the Arnprior Chronicle-Guide a copy. To date, no one from the Liberal government has addressed Gallant's assessment of Plan 2014 or Fisheries Act amendments. Harris's lengthy email cited the Parliamentary Budget Officer and the Insurance Bureau of Canada issuing the same message: flooding is worse due to cli-
mate change. "It is worth noting that MP Gallant is the only Member of Parliament to have voted against the Paris Accord despite the clear impacts of a changing climate in her own riding." Gallant wants a response to her letter by July 31.

EQUESTRIAN COMMUNITY PROPOSED FOR CALABOGIE AREA JONATHAN MULVIHILL jmulvihill@metroland.com A new form of tourism is on its way to Greater Madawaska. Calabogie Peaks Resort COO Jim Hemlin and Horse Country Campground President Walter Willett are teaming up on a Canadian first - an equestrian community. The duo appeared before Greater Madawaska council July 15. There, they outlined their plan for a 136-acre piece of land behind Calabogie Peaks Village. "We often think of horses as livestock, but in this consideration, these are truly pets and the horses come first," Willett said. "These are not working animals, this is not a breeding farm. These are truly pets. If the owners could get them into their house they could." They compared the new community to a hobby farmer with less of the work. "It's a very sustainable and eco-friendly community in general," Hemlin said. "The Peaks Resort offers a year-round draw in terms of the ski hills and other summer and year-round activity. So we can see this attracting people not only from Eastern Ontario, but from far away." The project concept includes the construction of a unique planned cottage community that is focused around, and caters to, the recreational horse owner. This equestrian planned community will include a subdivision plan involving a cottage and small barn, in addition to a central community hub featuring shared public facilities for community members including an indoor arena, equestrian obstacle courses and facilities. The community is currently in the initial planning stage. The current timeline shows they intend to market lots in the fall, make an on-site sales centre or next summer and begin construction by 2021.
WOMAN AIRLIFTED FROM MA-TE-WAY PARK FOLLOWING HIGHWAY 132 CRASH SHERRY HAAIMA sherr y.haaima@ metroland.com Ma-Te-Way Park goers were surprised to see an Ornge air ambulance touch down in the parking lot Wednesday evening (July 17). Ornge Air was at the Renfrew park to meet a land ambulance transporting a female who sustained potentially lifethreatening injuries in a head-on collision that occurred around 5:15 p.m. on Highway 132 between Highway 41 and Merchand Kearns Road. "Two female patients were assessed and treated at the scene," said Renfrew County Chief Paramedic Michael Nolan. One of the patient's inju-

ries was serious enough to warrant a "trauma bypass" to the Ottawa Civic Hospital. "It's pretty significant for us to bypass and go straight to Ottawa. So we activated Ornge and were able to rendezvous with them at Ma-Te-Way Park," said Nolan. The second female patient was treated for serious injuries en route to Renfrew Victoria Hospital. "The drivers were the only occupants of each vehicle. A 24-year old woman from King City, Ont. was initially transported to hospital by Renfrew County Paramedics and was then airlifted to an Ottawa hospital by Air Ornge with potentially life-threatening injuries," reads a press release from
the Killaloe Ontario Provincial Police (OPP). "The other, a 31-year old woman from Kanata, was taken to a local hospital with serious, but not life-threatening injuries. "Bonnechere Valley Fire Department assisted at the scene.OPP traffic collision investigators and a collision reconstructionist attended the scene to assist Killaloe officers. The investigation is continuing.Anyone with information regarding this incident should contact the OPP 1-888-3101122. PLEASE STOP WHINING ABOUT AMBER ALERTS When an AMBER Alert lit up cellphones around the province July 11 at 3 a.m., many called 911 not to report a sighting of two missing boys and their grandfather in York Region, but to complain about the early wake-up call. This was the fifth such AMBER Alert to have been issued in 2019 since the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission pushed for the distribution of emergency messages across wireless networks in April 2018. All but one instance had a happy outcome. In this case, the boys and their grandfather were found safe an hour and a half later. It's not something police services use lightly. Later that morning, Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) noted 911 is "not an appropriate venue to complain about AMBER Alerts." "The OPP recognizes the inconvenience the alert may have caused, but will not apologize for using all of the tools available to help locate a missing child," the OPP stated in a press release. It's not the first time it's happened and probably won't be the last. When an alert was issued in May, Niagara Regional Police took the step of releasing audio from a 911 caller's complaint to set an example. It doesn't seem to have worked. The flood of angry 911 calls has prompted people to muse whether those calling 911 calls for such inconveniences should be punished. We think they should. The 911 system is for emergencies and using it to complain ties up the line in the event of actual emergencies. And missing a few hours of beauty sleep is not an emergency. It's difficult to understand how the mild annoyance of being woken up in the middle of night is more important than a missing child. The fact of the matter is, it isn't. Is the alarm jarring and annoying? Sure. But it is for a reason. What if it was your child? Wouldn't you want the message to be spread far and wide to aid police in their search? In cases like these, the more time ticks away, the less likely it is a child will be found safe. Some feel an opt-out method could improve the system, similar to what is done in the United States, where different levels of alerts are issued. People have the option of receiving all, or only certain ones. The bottom line is, use your common sense. The 911 system is not for complaints about loss of sleep, to order beer or pizza or whatever else. There is a solution if you want to avoid being awoken in the night - simply turn your phone off.

Summer in the wild brings the responsibility of raising young. For most mammals, including moose and white-tailed deer, it is the females that bear all of the responsibility for feeding and protecting their progeny. However, as is always the case in nature, there are exceptions to a generalization. Eastern coyotes and red foxes maintain pair bonds, with both sexes taking part in satisfying the ever-increasing appetites of their young. On the other hand, in the vast majority of the world's near 10,000 species of birds, both males and females share in the task of producing young. Common loon and pileated woodpecker pairs take turns incubating eggs. After the eggs hatch, both parents provide food and protection for the babies. Ducks, however, employ a very different strategy. After offering impressive displays and perhaps seemingly sincere promis-
es, the males desert their mates soon after mating. Male common mergansers, those green-headed, orange-billed, fish-eating ducks head up to James and Hudson bays. They then form huge, male-only groups that spend all day fishing and telling stories. Back here, female common mergansers, which with their shaggy, brown heads and grey bodies look very different from the scandalous males, perform all of the incubation duties and protection of the young. Remarkably, these large ducks nest in cavities high up in trees where, after hatching, the young fearlessly jump to the ground and follow their mother to the nearest large body of water. On average, common mergansers lay between nine and 12 eggs. However, an examination of the DNA of a female's eggs would often reveal that at least one egg was not her own. Mergansers, like many ducks, are not averse to going to a neighbour's nest and dumping off an egg. This behaviour, known as intraspecific brood parasitism or egg dumping, could well serve as an insurance policy in the event that the enterprising female's nest becomes depredated or destroyed during inclement weather. Once the brood hatches, the female provides protec-
tion for any young that survive the gauntlet of hungry mouths and reach the water's safety. Even then, many will fail to escape the hungry jaws of snapping turtles and northern pike. Sometimes, however, a female's brood actually increases in size. This is because another female has come along and dropped off her brood, permanently abandoning it to be raised by the newly appointed babysitter. The resulting super group of young is known as a crèche. Why a female would give up her parental duties remains a matter of conjecture, but both members of the interaction benefit in terms of a "safety in numbers" principle. If a predator attacks a larger group of young, the odds for the survival of each individual youngster are improved. Currently, female common mergansers and their young broods can be seen on lakes and larger rivers. However, no males will be seen until the fall. ONTARIO NAMES SPECIAL ADVISOR ON FLOODING JONATHAN MULVIHILL jmulvihill@metroland.com In a July 18 announcement, provincial officials said newly named special advisor on flooding Doug McNeil will help with ways to reduce the impacts of flooding and ensure communities can recover quickly. John Yakabuski, Minister of Natural Resources and Forestry and Dr. Merrilee Fullerton, Minister of Long-Term Care, made the
announcement at a July 18 news conference today at Constance Bay Beach. "We heard from people across the province and saw first-hand the damage caused by flooding in so many communities," Yakabuski said. "We want to help Ontarians protect what matters most, and the special advisor will help better prepare our province for flooding in the future." Residents of Renfrew County and surrounding
areas are still recovering from the major flood that began in late April. The special advisor will assess current roles and responsibilities of governments, agencies and organizations involved in flood management, including any opportunities for improvement, reviewing feedback received, identifying focused recommendations, and ensuring all recommendations are consistent with the province's
ability to implement them. McNeil's experience includes 36 years in the public service with the City of Winnipeg and Province of Manitoba. He was involved in many aspects of water resource planning, operations, and management. He played key roles in the 1997 "Flood of the Century" on the Red River and led the Floodway Expansion project, which included a provincial review of floodway operating rules
and flood protection studies of mitigation measures for Winnipeg. The province held Flooding Engagement Sessions earlier this year in Muskoka, Pembroke, and Ottawa to hear from municipalities and industry leaders on how to better prepare for and respond to floods. McNeil will build on input from those sessions as well as feedback from the public. Property owners can apply online for a work per-
mit to repair eroded shorelines and conduct erosion control immediately. The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry has also launched a new Surface Water Monitoring Centre webpage with access to flood early warning messages. This will help property and homeowners prepare for and respond to flood conditions and take action to stay safe and reduce flood damage by responding to early warnings in advance of an emergency.

The Zoning By-law currently recognizes the upper limit of the Ottawa River floodplain as being the 76.16 metre G.S.C. contour. The 2019 flood levels reached and elevation of 76.3 metres G.S.C.. A change to the flood elevation and other flood related provisions in the Zoning By-law may impact how waterfront lots can be developed or redeveloped. Additional information regarding the Zoning By-law amendment is available for inspection at the Township of McNab/Braeside Municipal Office during regular office hours.

The Township of Greater Madawaska has drawn up an application to the County of Renfrew regarding a planned subdivision located on Barrett Chute Road and Calabogie Road.Council was made aware of the proposed application during a public meeting held on July 15. "There is no new development with this application, this is just another step in the process of getting the subdivision approved," planning and development manager Luke Desjardins said. The proposed plan for the subdivision consists of four blocks of land. The first block will be a commercial block, fronting on Barrett Chute Road, for the existing hotel and restaurant. The second block will be a multiple residential block, with access to Barrett Chute Road, for two existing buildings containing 10 units, with the intention to turn those into

JUST THE FACTS The new additions to Barnet Boulevard from Raglan Street South to Eighth Street include a multi-use pathway. Development and works director Mike Asselin said the intended use of the pathway is to give more room for walkers, bikers and strollers. The revamp is one of many additions for Part A of the two-part Barnet Boulevard Rehabilitation Project. The work included the introduction, rehabilitation and replacement of road structure and pavement, a multi-use pathway, curbs, landscaping, the Millennium Trail connection enhancement and street lighting. Construction began in April 2018 and

FIVE QUESTIONS WITH RENFREW WRESTLER JOLIE BRISCO, INTERNATIONAL BRONZE MEDALIST JONATHAN MULVIHILL jmulvihill@metroland.com It's an impressive accomplishment for an impressive young wrestler. Jolie Brisco won bronze at the Junior Pan-Am Championship in Guatemala on June 5-7. The Renfrew Vipers Club wrestler competed in four matches, winning two of those to place on the podium during the tournament. The Renfrew Mercury spoke with Brisco about her achievement. Renfrew Mercury: How does it feel getting this international medal? Jolie Brisco: I have been wrestling a long time and being on the podium and getting a medal isn't always what makes me the most proud. Winning a match always makes me happy but there is something about winning even just one match on a world stage when you are representing your country that feels so much better. It gave me so much pride to be representing Canada, Renfrew and the Vipers. RM: How did you prepare for this tournament? JB: I upped the intensity of my train-
ing by attending from four to five practices a week. I traveled to Petawawa, Ottawa and Arnprior just to get extra practices in. I continued with my physiotherapy treatments as I was dealing with a shoulder injury and started massage therapy to give myself the best chance of getting better. Mental preparation was probably the hardest thing I had to do. These women I was going to face were years older than me and being on a world stage where everyone would be watching me was frightening. I had to dig deep and remember all of the hard work I put in over the years and realize that I deserve to be here. I love wrestling and it's not about the winning. I wrestle because it is my part of who I am. RM: How would you describe your journey throughout your career? JB: I started wrestling when I was seven years old. I came home with a permission slip to join the school team and told my mom that I wanted to wrestle. I had no idea how far I would come or what the Pan Am Games or the Olympics were. I never once thought I would make it this far. I wasn't always the best and it wasn't an easy journey. There have been days where I wanted to quit but I know now
that every day, every tear, every loss has made me a stronger and better athlete. RM: What is your proudest moment so far? JB: My proudest moment came when I won the Junior Canadian National Championship. Because I am younger than most of these women, my coaches were hesitant to let me go compete. With my persistence they allowed me to go and I got gold at that tournament. I really didn't expect to win, I thought that I would just like to be on the podium and show that I could wrestle at this level. When I won my final match, it felt amazing, like all of my hard work all of these years was finally paying off and everything was starting to fall into place. RM: What is next for you? JB: I have officially qualified and been asked to be on the Junior World Team for Team Canada. I will be heading to Estonia in August to compete at the Junior World Championship. I will also be heading to Ontario Cup in Guelph and to Atlantic City with Team Ontario in July. These two tournaments will help prepare me for the World Championship. I don't want to think too far into the future but I do know wrestling will always be part of my life.

Danielle will be forever remembered by her loving and devoted husband James and their precious children Anderson (12) Garrett (8). SADLER, Lawrence Earl (Co-Founder and Life member of the Madawaska Pleasure Riders) Earl passed away, peacefull,y in the early hours of July 20, 2019, with his loving wife Patricia (Burns) by his side. He leaves to mourn his most loved and respected sister-in-law Susan (Mervin) McIntyre, sister Muriel (late George) Currie, brothers Arthur (Phyllis), and Stuart (MaryAnne). Father of Judith (Dick) Howey, Shelley, Phillip, and John Sadler. Much loved grandfather to Karen (Andrew) Valley, Ron (Anna) Ingram, Ryan (Haidyn) Smith, Lindsy (Justin) Smith, Travis and Zac Sadler, and great-granddaughter Ashley Ingram. Earl will be missed by his many friends and will live on in the memories shared. He will always be remembered for his love of life and the many jokes he played on unsuspecting friends and family. Known to many as simply the Mule Man. Earl often remarked he had the best life, retiring early and able to do what he loved playing with horses and mules, spending time with friends, camping, riding and driving. He had two things on his bucket list attending Bishop Mule Days in California, and riding a mule in the Grand Canyon, both of which he accomplished. He also leaves behind his much loved and talked about dog Skipper2. Some words that have been used to describe Earl are as follow: deliberate or stubborn, teacher, smartass, horseman, friend, mentor, passionate, wry sense of humor, storyteller, authentic, and memorable. A very huge thank you goes out to all who cared for Earl at the Bonnechere Manor, Dr. Andrea Dipaolo and the wonderful drivers of the Sunshine Coach. LAUNDRIE, Keith Longtime Valued Associate of the Pilon Family Funeral Home With sadness, we announce that our very own Keith Laundrie passed away at the Arnprior and District Memorial Hospital on Monday evening, July 15, 2019. He was 84. Beloved husband of the late Hazel (nee Bandy). Loved father of Bob, Doug, Terry and Bruce (Angela). Predeceased by an infant son, Jeff. Devoted Poppa of Abby. Dear brother of Shirley Desnoyers (Guy). The last surviving son of the late Adam and Maude (nee Fortin) Laundrie, Keith was also predeceased by four brothers; Bill, Tom and Harold Laundrie, Wayne Nolan as well as a sister, Dorothy MacMillan (late Ian). After a long career at the Dochart Brick and Tile Factory in Arnprior, Keith spent several years doing odd jobs for area residents. In retirement, Keith began to help out at the Funeral Home as groundskeeper and general maintenance person. He was always so proud of the work he did at our Funeral Home. Keith remained a loyal and dedicated employee of ours for many years. He moved to Almonte to be closer to his son and family a few years ago. A fine little man has earned his rest. BURNETT, Beverly Cherylann (Hodgins) It is with the saddest regret that we announce the death of Beverly Cherylann Burnett (Hodgins). A beautiful and colourful soul who marched to her own drum, Bev slipped quietly into Heaven at the young age of 58 at her home in Renfrew. She passed in her sleep after battling a multitude of illnesses one of which was heart disease. Bev is survived by her two sons, Christopher (wife Meara and grandchildren Cassandra, Dylan and Makaila) and Kyle; her loving and devoted parents Basil and May Hodgins, brother Brian (Buzz), and sisters Bonita (nephew Richard Cassidy, wife Jill and stepdaughter Maddie), and BerylAnn; predeceased by her sister Bonnie MacPherson (husband Rodney, nieces Kimberly and Leeann) and most recently her friend and life partner Ronald Burnett. Respecting her wishes, there will not be a formal funeral service but instead the family will be holding a Celebration of Life in September (date yet to be determined) to allow close friends and family to send off both Ronnie and Bev in the manner which they would approve.

We prepared the night before. The breakfast table was set, our clothes were laid out, and all that had to be done the next morning were the chores. It was the day before we would go deep into the bush to pick raspberries, and we would leave early, and get home just in time to do the milking. Eleven quart baskets were packed with sandwiches, jars of pickles, cookies and muffins, and preserve jars were filled with chipped ice, which would eventually melt, giving us cold drinking water. Everything was stacked on the stone boat, including empty milk cans which would hold the picked raspberries. I was the only one allowed to sit on the stone boat, being the youngest and the lightest. The ground to the bush was too uneven for a wagon, and Queen the quietest of the team, would be fed hay during the day from the bag Father had gotten ready. Mother learned from Mrs. Beam that to keep the bugs, bees, flies and mosquitoes away, we should rub our faces and any other part of our bodies exposed, with Vicks VapoRub, and so we went into the bush smelling like we were all suffering from a bad cold. I prayed we would never have to use it, but Father always laid a shotgun on the stone boat just in case a bear decided to join us. It was a long walk for everyone else to get into the deepest part of the bush, where the raspberry bush-
es flourished. And when we came to the inner depths, I could see the berries hanging in clusters. We all had honey pails hanging from belts around our waist, and as each pail was filled we went to the stone boat and gently emptied it into a milk can. Because we separated as we filled our pails, Mother, ever afraid we would get lost in the thick bush, would blow a whistle every so often, and each of us would have to holler "here" back to her. Being as timid as I was, I always made sure I could see her, Father or my sister Audrey out of the corner of my eye. Emerson, of course, wanted to have lunch almost as soon as we got there! I was always amazed at how quickly our little honey pails filled. We didn't have to pick the berries one by one ... we simply put two fingers on a sprig, pulled gently down, and they rolled off as easy as pie. It wasn't long until one of the milk cans was full. It was then, when we would stop for lunch. Being as fussy as she was about cleanliness, of course, Mother was sure that each of us wiped our hands thoroughly on the wet and soapy wash cloths she brought from home. Then we would go into the afternoon and pick until the second milk can was full, and that's when Mother would call it quits. Red as beets, clothes wet from sweat, and our fingers scarlet from the ber-
ries, we were more than ready to head for home. I could curl up on the stone boat, and usually fell asleep wedged between the two milk cans. Of course, that wouldn't be the end of the berries. Over the next day or two, they would be sorted, stems removed, and gently washed, saving a goodly amount to have for dessert and the rest turned into jams and preserves. I was more fascinated with the preserved berries than I was with the jam. Because I couldn't understand how, once the big sealers were full of boiled sugar and water, the berries would always float to the top. Of course, the jar would be well stirred before the preserves were served in little fruit nappies as a dessert, bringing back with vivid memory that day in the bush when the whole family worked together. It was just another way of making sure the shelf in the cellar which held jar after jar of jams, jellies, preserves and pickles would be full for the long winter months ahead. GOLF, TEA AND BARBECUES FOR RENFREW AND AREA SENIORS' HOME SUPPORT RENFREW AND AREA SENIORS' HOME SUPPORT It's been a busy start to summer for clients and friends of Renfrew and Area Seniors' Home Support. May 31, we hosted our sixth annual Drive for Drives tournament at the Renfrew Golf Course. Thirteen teams braved the chilly night for a nine-anddine tournament. Putters from the 1920s were used for the putting contest. Three golfers tied for first place Jamie Cybulski, Sean McDade
and Doug Ewart. A "putt-off" took place with McDade winning the contest. This was our most successful golf tournament to date, raising $5,922.76 for our agency. June 9 the Fractured Crow Studio on Fraser Road was the venue for an afternoon tea. The studio is owned by Reggie Armonas and is filled with unique and interesting pieces made by various artists, including Reggie. The gardens on the property are absolutely lovely! A light lunch was served, with delicious
sandwiches provided by the Burnstown Women's Institute. Desserts were provided by some of the home support volunteers. Our thanks go out to everyone who attended as we raised $289 for our agency. It's barbecue season! The first barbecue of the summer took place on June 28, raising $819. Two more barbecues will be held - one July 26 and the last one Aug. 30. The cost is $5 for a burger or $4 for a hotdog, with a drink and a treat included. We are very thankful for the
continued support we receive. Providing essential services to seniors' and adults with disabilities so that they may remain as active as possible, for as long as possible, in their own homes and communities, is of utmost importance! Services include: transportation, friendly visiting, telephone security checks, home maintenance, a frozen meal program, and intervention and assistance. KARRAS' WAY POUTINE A CLASSIC WITH A GREEK TWIST JONATHAN MULVIHILL jmulvihill@metroland.com I've never travelled the world outside North America, but some of the different foods I've tried over the years make me feel like I've partaken in very diverse cultures. Sometimes I take the plunge head on, while other times I need to take baby steps. That's why, on my visit to Karras' Way restaurant in Renfrew, I decided to
try something already familiar to me with a cultural twist. When I first walked into Karras' Way, it felt like I was part of a movie scene where a couple of characters chat it up while dining in a restaurant. The gentleman taking my order was kind and understanding as I was making my choice. Wanting to ease myself into this experience, I eventually decided on the Karras' Way poutine.
This delectable treat is made with the usual fries and gravy, but includes pepperoni, bacon and ham, and substitutes regular cheese for feta. The smell alone convinced me this meal would be a memorable one. All the meats and the cheese together in a sizeable tin had an appealing look. The taste was what sold me. Each of the individual ingredients alone
had a satisfying feel to the palate. Fuse all that flavour together and you're higher than cloud nine. When finished my meal, I was left satisfied with a full belly of sheer deliciousness. All around, the Karras' Way poutine is a must have food item from their menu. I'll definitely be heading back to Karras' Way sooner rather than later to try more of their menu.
