Do You Ponder Things At Nighttime? Pat Farrell / Contributing Writer
PRSRT STD U.S. Postage PAID San Antonio, Texas Permit #1416
It is funny how some nights when you are very tired, you get i n t o b e d a n d j u s t g o r i g h t o ff t o sleep, but other nights you just lie there while some of the strangest things come to mind. I was mulling over how good dinner was one evening and that the champagne was especially good, and the cork popped out so easily! Cork – I wonder if the cork used for bottle stoppers is the same as the cork used in bulletin boards and, if so, where does cork come from? Better check that out in the morning! It turns out that an outer layer of cork bark can be found in a l m o s t e v e r y t r e e , h o w e v e r, t h e best source for the cork, that will later be manufactured into the products with which we are f a m i l i a r, i s t h e c o r k t r e e , f o u n d growing in countries with plenty of sunshine that are along the Mediterranean Sea coast which i n c l u d e s A l g e r i a , F r a n c e , I t a l y, Morocco, Portugal, Spain, and Tu n i s i a . C o r k i s l i g h t w e i g h t , resists rot, fire, and termites, is impermeable to gas and liquid and is soft and buoyant which makes it ideal for bottle stoppers, bulletin boards, flooring, etc.
Once a cork oak is at least 2 5 y e a r s o l d i t i s r e a d y t o b e h a rv e s t e d a n d d u r i n g J u n e , J u l y, a n d August, a long-handled hatchet will be used to strip and pry away sections of bark, being careful to n o t d a m a g e t h e b a r k ’s i n n e r l a y e r. These sections are then boiled so the cork is softened, and the outer bark is easier to remove and holes are punched to make bottle stoppers. The leftover cork scraps are then ground up and molded into blocks and baked in an oven so they can then be made into other products. It will be another eight to fourteen years before that tree can be harvested again. We l l , I g u e s s t h a t a n s w e r s t h e cork question! Then there is another thought fighting its way in because when I was going t h r o u g h m y d r e s s e r I f o u n d s e v e ral pairs of gloves - what ever happened to gloves as a fashion item? I recall that, back in the d a y, g l o v e s w e r e a n e c e s s a r y p a r t o f a l a d y ’s w a r d r o b e , e s p e c i a l l y when attending any function such as Sunday church services, weddings, and funerals. Even in the military they were and still are a p a r t o f o n e ’s u n i f o r m . T h e s e d a y s , h o w e v e r, i t i s r a r e t o s e e a n y o n e , o u t s i d e t h e m i l i t a r y, wearing gloves as part of their outfit other than during winter months when they are necessary for warmth. Better check that one out too! It turns out that gloves go much further back than “in the d a y, ” a s t h e r e i s m e n t i o n o f g l o v e s i n H o m e r ’s T h e O d y s s e y, written around the 7th century BC, and there is evidence that fingerless gloves (often decorated or jeweled) were worn as a status symbol by the ancient Egyptian Pharaohs and were used also to protect the hands of noble women. Through the centuries, g l o v e s h a v e b e e n u s e d b y r o y a l t y, members of royal courts and by high ranking government and church officials. It was during
the 13th century that silk or linen g l o v e s b e c a m e a p a s s i n g w o m a n ’s fashion statement in Italy but by the16th century Queen Elizabeth I really set the fashion in England for wearing fancy embroidered or jeweled gloves. Historically a glove has also been referred to as a gauntlet where the expression, “throw down the gauntlet” is a reference to the medieval practice among knights where one throws down his protective metal glove (gauntlet) to challenge another knight to combat and if that knight is brave enough to pick it up, the war is on! As the nighttime flight of ideas continue I remember that alongside the gloves in the dresser are multiple handkerchiefs – but who uses hankies today? Because many statues that date as far back as 1000 BC, during the C h o u d y n a s t y, w e r e u s u a l l y p i c tured holding decorative pieces of cloth, it is believed that the handkerchief originated in China and was used during periods of heat, primarily to wipe the sweat f r o m o n e ’s b r o w. L i t e r a r y r e f e rences, throughout the years, point to the multitude of uses for handkerchiefs as it was dropped to start the Roman chariot races and during the middle ages, a lady would give her handkerchief to the knight she favored, and he would tie it to his helmet for good luck. The Romans would wave hankies during their public games as do the spectators today at the bullfights in Spain. I n S h a k e s p e a r e ’s O t h e l l o , i t was the loss of a handkerchief (the main symbol of the story) that caused Othello to believe his wife, Desdemona, to be unfaithful and as a result he kills her and then himself when he learns he was wrong. In 1695 when hankies were available in all sizes and shapes, King Ludwig XIV declared that throughout his k i n g d o m t h e l e n g t h o f a h a n d k e rchief must be equal to its width and so it became a square, and
not to be outdone, in the late1700s French King Louis XVI m a d e i t a l a w t h a t a l l h a n d k e rchiefs must be square, and that n o n e c o u l d b e l a rg e r t h a n h i s ! Handkerchiefs have always, in some respects, been fashion statements and for some, symbols of their wealth or status. In some instances, the embroidered, lace edged hankie was dangled from the hands and in others was neatly folded, pressed and inserted in the left breast pocket. Then along came Kleenex in the 1930s and now one can usually just find handkerchiefs in suit breast pockets – so what will I do with all those hankies in the dresser drawers? Wo n d e r w h e n I w i l l f i n a l l y get to sleep … well, until then I might as well ponder what needs to get done around the house tomorrow besides getting rid of a n e x c e s s o f g l o v e s a n d h a n d k e rchiefs? I do need to do some cleaning … hmm, during past research I learned that the broom has been around since 2300 BC, but when it comes to carpets and furniture I am glad someone got the bright idea for the vacuum c l e a n e r. T h e m o d e r n v a c u u m h a s been continually improved upon through the recent years because i t s 1 9 0 1 f o r e r u n n e r, “ P u f f i n Billy” had to be transported on a horse-drawn carriage. In 1902, t h e m a c h i n e ’s e n g i n e e r / i n v e n t o r, Hubert Cecil Booth was commissioned to vacuum clean the We s t m i n s t e r A b b e y a h e a d o f t h e coronation of Queen Alexandra and King Edward VII, who were so pleased with the results that they bought the devices for Wi n d s o r C a s t l e a n d B u c k i n g h a m Palace. Before long Parliament and other British government e n t i t i e s a l l h a d t h e i r o w n “ P u ff i n Billy” machines, while in the United States in 1906, Kirby created a portable, easy to store vacuum that anyone could easily use. Of course, improvements have continued since ---ZZZZZZZZZ!

THE WAY I SEE IT Cathey Meyer / Contributing Writer
Cocktail Hour While the youth of this decade troll YouTube and the social medias for their news feed, I continue to enjoy the old fashion 5 O’clock broadcasts from my local television station still available on antenna and cable TV. Even those stations have added additional news access through their apps, streaming services and ‘sister’ channels. No matter, most of the news is the same no matter who is reporting the car chase, car crash, family dispute or the all too often random shooting. The local news is what feeds my curiosity since the national and world news has a very distinct slant depending on your three capital letter channel selection. My viewing habits actually begin around 6 AM, as I like to start my day knowing if the world is close to ending or if we are starting just another routine day. I am not wasting my last moments on earth with an early morning exercise practice.
If the world is close to imploding, I will be sipping a martini on my balcony, eating dark chocolate and estimating how long my personal supply chain will last in the event of global termination. So far, no luck on the morning martini as the perky morning news personnel announce traffic issues, weather updates and the car chase, car crash, family dispute or the all too often random shooting. The prep for my morning exercise routine involves a sad collection of workout wear long past their expiration date. Not much matches or coordinates and what goes on depends on the current flux of the weight curve. I go out before daylight for a reason—no one needs to see my jingles and jangles prior to a first cup of caffeine. The regular transient population appreciate my fashion sense and comment accordingly in the prior sunrise moments. We are a nonjudgmental group and so goes my routine.
Real Estate Newsline
Since the historic pandemic altered routines over the past year, my pre-sunrise exercise departure altered depending on the crisis level of exposure to other humans— masked or otherwise. I still woke up at the same time, but now I had time to actually look at the television screen and put faces to voices I have listened to in a fog of the early morning rush to get myself out and exercising. I must say the attractiveness of the early morning reporters was a pleasant surprise. Not sure what I was expecting, but the Botox, self-tanners and good lighting make for an easy watch. Then I began the wardrobe study . . . so when did early morning news become the cocktail hour runway fashion show? From the weathered forecast chick to the road raged traffic chick to the on-location car chase, car crash, family dispute or the all too often random shooting chick, they all sport workwear better suited for a hostess gig and my local watering hole. What happened to the classic professional solid suit with a sensible blouse and pearl earrings? I should halt my judgement, but sometimes it is so hard when the decoupage screen leads the eye in a direction other than the pending cold front, traffic jam cluster or blood stream of the family dispute. The dresses are tight, the stilettos are high and the earrings swing like the San Francisco Steak House

trapeze talent. (That’s one for San Antonio homies.) At first, I thought it was just my bored, old lady jealously thinking caddy remarks about ladies way out of my league. But the voice of reason chimed in unexpectedly as my trusty companion dashed by the screen and came to a screeching halt to see what housewife episode I was watching so early in the day. When he realized this was the morning ‘news’, his routine was ready to change. Suddenly he was the redcarpet critic analyzing ‘who ya wearing’ and offering constructive criticism on what would make this outfit more appealing. Without missing a beat, he was in favor of more coverage—both of the reporters and the news/weather/traffic. On an unrelated note, he made an observation unrelated to the clothing coverage: What is the point of reporting traffic on morning television? The commuting driver is not watching television—they are actually in the traffic getting to work. The watching public is not driving—they are home determining if the world will continue another 24 hours. Maybe it is a conspiracy to keep helicopter pilots employed and attorneys in our face in case we are hit by an 18-wheeler. Please note, the morning news is now the new cocktail hour. After all it is five o’clock somewhere and no one says happy hour has to be a PM event.

Founded by the San Antonio Board of REALTORS® Originally named San Antonio Board of Realtors Federal Credit Union (SABOR FCU), the Texas Associations of Professionals Federal Credit Union (TAP FCU) was established in 1978 by REALTORS®, to help meet the financial needs of those who work in the Real Estate Industry, many of which have a fluctuating income. The name change to Associations of Professionals better reflects the nature of its field of membership and today, your REALTORS® Credit Union has evolved from being a simple savings and loan business, to becoming a Full Service Real Estate Lender, offering most loans that one can imagine, to meet your needs and those of your clients. Many
REALTORS® over the years have been grateful for the availability of the automatic line of credit that TAP FCU offers which allows them to pay bills while waiting for the next commission check. At the time of its founding your REALTORS® Credit Union had one employee, assets of less than one million and occupied a 10’ x 10’ room in the reception area of a relatively small Board of REALTORS®, but over the more than 40 years since its inception and the leadership of a strong board, and Paula W. automatic line of credit available to REALTORS® in the real estate industry with a satisfactory credit score has increased from the original $1,000 to $2,500. TAP FCU is a major player in the home loan arena and their Mortgage Division continues to grow under the very capable direction of Vice President, Mortgage Division, Windy Minten. In 2020 the Credit Union closed $37.3 million in real estate loans and expects to easily exceed that record in 2021. Their Construction Loan Program, with two-time close, has always been very popular with builders and lenders and they appreciate TAP’s focus on excellence and their ability to keep up with service deliverables. Mortgage Lending at TAP FCU also includes Mortgage Purchase, NonWarrantable Condominiums, Investment Property and Second Homes. They will lend up to 90% on Construction Loans. Now, heavily involved in the mortgage business and keeping their major client base in mind, TAP FCU has established the REALTOR® Program which offers a 90% loan to Value (10% down and no mortgage insurance) to REALTORS® with two year’s-experience in sales as evidenced by their filed tax returns for those years and bank statements that reflect their commission deposits. Also, REALTORS® will pay no fees for the receipt or send-

ing of wire transfers (international being the exception). TAP FCU’s full-service offerings extend into other areas of banking and provide programs that were not available prior to the major technical upgrade which occurred in 2019, some features of which include remote deposit using mobile devices, Apple Pay, Google Pay or Android Pay and the Debit Card Valet which allows members to instantly turn off their debit card when it is not in use or when not needed. Technology is an ever changing factor and TAP FCU continues to work at keeping up with that curve by continuing to upgrade as new things come about in the banking industry. With the major growth that TAP FCU is experiencing a need to increase staff, especially in the mortgage department, they are looking for dedicated loan officers and others to fill positions to help accommodate the increasing number of loan requests they are receiving. Please spread the word, and to all real estate professionals especially REALTORS®: you should have at least one of your accounts at TAP FCU where you will learn why this Credit Union was created for you, and you will experience a place where you are not just an account number, but rather a welcoming place “where everybody knows your name!”

Helping Hands, Moving Forward And Staying Safe NARPM doesn't just provide resources for residential property management professionals, NARPM also builds and grows relationships within our community. On the 11th of June, the San Antonio Chapter spent time working with others packing boxes of
various food and drinks at the San Antonio Food bank. Although it was work, it was exciting to know that our efforts were helping many families. On that day we assisted in packing a little over 15,700 pounds of food which will make for about 14,000 meals. NARPM is so appreciative of all the kind h e l p i n g hands and the opportunity. In other news, the eviction moratorium is scheduled to come to an end on June 30th and while writing this article, there wasn't any new information about a possible extension. Should the moratorium expire, tenants who have been behind in rent will be required to pay their balances or possibly face eviction proceedings. This brings up the question, how will the courts handle the amount of filings that will be added to their working caseloads. It's safe to say there may be some delays or extensions on court dates that may also require more patience. The good news is that there is still rent relief and utility assistance available for tenants. Please note that property managers can assist by starting the application for the tenant. Reach out to the tenant and notify them that they will need to assist in answering questions and providing the required documents needed to complete the application. To apply or for more information, please visit: https://texasrentrelief.com/. As of today, the Texas Rent Relief program has been able to assist about 40,000 families and has paid over 2 million in assistance and there are still funds left. Lastly, it appears that most cities and states have either opened or are in early stages of
going back to business as usual, however, this doesn't mean not to continue to take precautions if that's what makes you comfortable. Although, Covid-19 cases have declined in San Antonio, cases are still happening. Do a friend or family checkup occasionally just to make sure they are okay and mask up when required.
