Happy New Year and Carnival

A

s we step into a new year, we find ourselves embracing both renewal and revelry. Our January/February issue captures that rare intersection where impact meets celebration, and where the heart of our community shines brightest. While the rest of the world is easing into January, we’re already buzzing with Carnival energy, sequins, king cakes, and of course, the people who make this city feel like home.

One of the things I look forward to most each year is celebrating our Activists of the Year.

These are the people quietly (and sometimes loudly!) doing the work that keeps our community strong. Their passion, grit, and generosity remind me why New Orleans is unlike anywhere else. I hope their stories inspire you as much as they inspire us.

This season is also synonymous with Carnival’s most dazzling traditions. Our fashion feature, photographed amid the historic charm of Race + Religious, showcases stunning ball gowns. From ethereal tulle to festive feathers, the looks capture the enchantment and exuberance of these winter months.

We’ve doubled the number of charitable events featured on our party pages, proof that New Orleanians know how to celebrate in service of something greater. eformation, known as Ref to the fashion set, recently opened its doors on a bustling block of Magazine Street. What began as a grassroots effort to curb fast fashion and champion local manufacturing has since blossomed into a coveted international label at the forefront of style. Based in Los Angeles, the brand is celebrated for its effortlessly cool designs and devotion to a feminine silhouette. A cult favorite among Hollywood’s IT girls, Reformation is poised to bring its influence on New Orleans fashion all while embracing the city’s distinctive charm. Sarah Hooe, SVP of Global Growth and Expansion at Reformation took a moment to chat with Avenue and answer the questions on all of our minds.

Why was New Orleans (and Magazine Street specifically) a good fit for Reformation? We’ve expanded our footprint

in the south significantly over the past few years as we’ve seen demand for Ref grow in the region. Our stores in Nash-

Reformation ville, Charleston, and Charlotte have far exceeded expectations. We’ve been overwhelmed by the support we’ve received at Reformation New Orleans after just a few days of business. The Garden District store is flanked by shotgun style homes converted into restaurants, galleries, and stores. We were so excited to secure such a special space on Magazine Street that is emblematic of New Orleans. We love that it’s part of a vibrant arts-focused neighborhood where we can authentically connect with the community.

How do you plan to engage with the local community, i.e.: events, philanthropy etc.? We recently hosted a housewarming party that was open to the public. It was catered by Bacchanal and featured live music from the Dr. Brice Miller Jazz Trio and wine from Really Really Nice Wines. It was so fun to see customers celebrating with us in the store and getting their thoughts on our assortment. Customer relationships are always important, but especially in

a market like New Orleans where community is king. We have a great store team in place with a wealth of local retail experience who will play an important role ensuring we’re translating the brand in a locally relevant way.

What is your typical customer’s age range and style? We have customers of all ages, which speaks to the wide appeal of the brand and our products. Our core customer is anywhere from 25-50 years old, so we often see mothers and daughters shopping together, which is really fun. Interestingly, our fastest growing customer segments fall below and above this age range. We are intentional about our assortment, so it always feels like there’s something for everyone at Ref. Is there anything new and notable about the brand we should know?

Anything exclusive to the New Orleans store? Sustainability is a core part of

our brand identity and mission. Like all our locations, our New Orleans store was designed with those values in mind.

On view through July 12, this exhibition focuses on Leonard, who immortalized these jazz greats during the emerging Bebop and Cool Jazz movements while he lived in New York City during the mid-20th century, and who after living in Paris, Ibiza and San Francisco, landed in New Orleans, where the museum honored his work with a book and exhibition in 2006. Operatic Maneuvers In 2021, New Orleans native and Grammy-award winning Terence Blanchard became the first black composer to have an opera, “Fire Shut Up In My Bones,” performed at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. This “opera in jazz,” says Blanchard, is based on Charles Blow’s memoir of his journey from a childhood in rural Louisiana to becoming an acclaimed journalist.

The Shape of Things

Carlton Scott Sturgill meticulously created a life devoted to the pursuit of art

P

ainter and installation artist Carlton Scott Sturgill has always been good at drawing. But like many creatives, Sturgill thought he couldn’t make a living as an artist. “So, when I went to college, I wanted to do something related to that, which was aeronautical engineering,” says Sturgill, a Cincinnati native.

“And that was a disaster.” At the time, Sturgill didn’t know he was dyslexic. The challenge of keeping up with the course reading led him to abandon college. A pivotal moment arrived during a trip to London, where a Rembrandt self-portrait deeply moved him. Sturgill says, “I totally lost it in the middle of the gallery.”

After earning his undergraduate degree at the University of Cincinnati, Sturgill established his first studio in Cincinnati. He pursued graduate studies at Chelsea College of Art and Design in London, later relocating to Brooklyn. The allure of New Orleans, where he and his wife became engaged in 1996, eventually drew them south.

The couple moved in 2015. “It was the best decision that we’ve ever made,” he says.

“This is home.” New Orleans profoundly influences Sturgill’s artistic approach, especially regarding craft. He notes the city’s dedication to detailed artistry, even Mardi

Gras throws such as Muses shoes. “I realized I needed to up my game when it comes to detail and quality,” Sturgill says. This dedication to craft is central to his hardedged abstract paintings, which often take months to complete.

It was during his second stint at college that Sturgill learned he had dyslexia, and the learning disability has ultimately informed his art. “One of the things that has overdeveloped in me is shape,” says Sturgill. “Because that’s how I see things.” This unique perception allows him to discern subtle differences in hues and values, which is evident in his paint chip mosaic paintings and more recent abstract works. “Color and shape are my language that I am strongest with.”

Sturgill’s passion for his work, coupled with a supportive wife, community and representation at Ferrara Showman Gallery, allows him to navigate the thing that initially deterred him from pursuing art — the inherent instability of an artistic career.

Now, his commitment to art is unwavering. “If I never sold another piece of art in my life,” Sturgill says. “I would still want to do this.” – By Melanie Warner Spencer

Dr. Paula Polito Owner and Director of Beary Cherry Tree/ Board Member, Jefferson Ready Start Network

A Family Legacy

As the third generation of her family to work in early childhood education, Dr. Paula Polito brings a unique perspective to this crucial industry. In 1974, her grandmother founded the organization that is now Beary Cherry Tree, and Dr. Polito carries out this family legacy many decades later. Rated Highly Proficient by the Louisiana Department of Education, this childcare center provides developmental programs for many young children, from infants through pre-Kindergarten.

In addition to the decades of family wisdom that have been collected in the institution, Dr. Polito incorporates the latest research in early childhood development into the classroom as well. The teachers work to provide these children a foundation for lifelong learning.

Dr. Polito has also applied a lifelong pursuit of education to her own goals, as she holds a degree in marketing, an MBA, and a recent doctorate in Urban Studies.

During her dissertation, Dr. Polito identified what really works in terms of early childhood education support: getting buy-in from local government officials, educators, and the community overall. When more people realize the significance of this work, it is easier to move the needle.

Jefferson Ready Start Network: Supporting Crucial Care

Dr. Polito stressed that relationship building is crucial to providing real resources for children. Thanks to her work on the board of the Jefferson Ready Start Network (JRSN), a collective that supports early childhood education access across Jefferson Parish, Dr. Polito helps identify children in need of this care. In fact, the Jefferson Parish Council is so dedicated to this cause that they have invested ~$250,000 each year over the past four years. Because that donation gets doubled by an early childhood trust at the state level, this means $500,000 is available for children from birth to age four who need access to early childhood education.

As Dr. Polito explained, the team at JRSN aspires to become a model for early childhood education, and they accomplish this in part by building a sustainable fund for this cause. By bringing together the right stakeholders and community advocates, they can create lasting

change for all children across the parish.

In addition, Dr. Polito and her colleagues hope to educate more people on the importance of early childhood education in general. One fact is clear: this type of education is not just babysitting. In fact, these professionals are sometimes known as brain architects. The educators can help create a strong foundation for these children at a crucial stage of their development. These teachers are trained on research-based tools that they use with intentionality and consistency, thus setting up these children for success.

For the most part, the educators’ immediate goal is to help these students become socially, emotionally, and academically prepared for kindergarten. Students who are not exposed to such high-quality programs may take longer to reach these milestones, which can in turn require additional time and effort from future educators.

When more students have access to these high-quality systems from their earliest years, everyone wins.

Future Goals

Focusing on the youngest members of the parish makes some serious long-term goals possible. In fact, one particular goal is to make Jefferson Parish a place where early childhood development and economic prosperity go handin-hand. The broader impact of these programs is difficult to overstate. Parents have an easier time participating in the workforce because their children have a beneficial place to go every day. This helps the economy thrive.

In addition, the positive influences of these programs help prepare these children for the workforce later on in life. Polito hopes to gain awareness of these programs in her role as 2026 Chair for the Jefferson Chamber of Commerce. For the most part, getting businesses to invest in high quality early childcare and education helps drive action and naturally create more positive experiences for these children, as well as their families, overall.

As a local small business owner, as well as someone with a deep background in educating the youngest children, Dr. Polito offers a unique breadth of understanding to this topic. “When you invest in children, you invest in everything: families, businesses, and the economy,” said Dr. Polito. – By Lindsay Mack

Bridge House/Grace House Mr. Legs XXV

A

rare combination of risqué and bodacious, Bridge House/Grace House Mr. Legs XXV, presented by the Oscar J. Tolmas Charitable Foundation, brought together men who dared the runway and the fans who came to see them at Generations Hall on July 19.

All, of course, to raise some funds while having fun.

This year’s 14 contestants brought their creative A-game to the event by making ensembles and unique mise-enscènes. Cheered on by emcees Laura Buchtel and Mike Hoss and the crowd, ultimately, the nine category winners were: • Fan Favorite and Best Performance: Chris Kazik and Matt Shine (who performed together). It was Chris’s third time winning Fan Favorite and Best Performance, and Matt’s second time winning Fan Favorite.

• Best Costume: Steve Carnes (11th time winning Best Costume.)

• Rookie of the Year: Jonathan Burke • Sexiest Legs: David Theriot • Hairiest Legs: Jeffery Carlson (Sixth time winning Hairiest Legs.)

• Skinniest Legs: Ryan Haydel. (Third time Ryan winning Skinniest Legs.)

• Mr. Legs Legacy (Lifetime Achievement Award): Roberto Espinoza • Mr. Legs XXV: Steve Carnes. Mr. Legs is the contestant who raises the most money. Steve has been first runner up twice and second runner up three times, but this is his first time winning Mr. Legs. This was also his 20th year competing.

• Mr. Legs First Runner Up: Michael Zarou (sixth time winning) and Second Runner Up: David Theriot.

The judges were Malik Mingo, Vincent Giardina and Whitney Miller.

In addition to the runway, guests could also enjoy a performance from the Pussyfooters, food from Copeland’s and Nirvana, a Big Game Raffle and a 50/50 raffle, and a Kendra Scott pop-up, of which 20 percent went to Bridge House/Grace House.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Louisiana Blue Door Blues Gala

B

lue Door Blues, the annual fundraiser for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Louisiana, lit up Generations Hall on June 5, drawing supporters, community leaders and local celebrities for an evening dedicated to the region’s youth.

Attendees enjoyed lively performances by Andre & The Giants, themed talent from Paper Doll Promotions and a sparkling stop at the Glitter Up NOLA glitter bar. Pigéon Catering sated appetites.

Special appearances from members of the New Orleans Saints brought extra excitement to the evening.

The program also highlighted the transformative work of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Louisiana, which served more than 1,000 children and teens in 2024. With a focus on academic support, character development and building confidence, the clubs provide safe, positive environments for young people — especially those who need it most — to grow into caring, responsible citizens.

Several distinguished honorees were celebrated for their contributions. Seresa Corbin was recognized for her 16 years of dedicated service. Doug Brooks was inducted into the organization’s Lifetime Giving Society, honoring donors who have contributed $250,000 or more, while Jeremy Hunwell was saluted as Board Member of the Year.

Cancer Crusaders Seersucker and Sass

t may have been the depths of summer on June 28, but the Cancer Crusaders knew how to offer a welcome break from the heat.

For its annual Seersucker and Sass party, the organization, which raises funds for cancer research, themed it as the Cancer Crusaders Pays Tribute to Pontchartrain Beach, invoking nostalgia for this beloved amusement park, which closed in 1983.

Guests (and organizers) took this theme and ran with it: tropical attire and bright colors were seen throughout the Chateau Golf and Country Club and many men donned Hawaiian shirts. Mai Tais in tiki glasses (as a party favor) inspired by the park’s Bali Ha’i restaurant and bar were served and a “Spin the Wheel” called “Spin To Win” (like at the park) allowed guests to win stuffed animals, gift cards or wine.

An ice cream bar where people could make their own sundaes was popular, as was the silent auction and music from the Top Cats.

Fun Fact: Guests were so excited about the Spin the Wheel (maybe reminiscing) that there was a long line the whole time it was open.

Junior Achievement Business Hall of Fame

A

t its annual Business Hall of Fame event, Junior Achievement of Greater New Orleans celebrates business and civic leaders whose accomplishments have strengthened the region’s economic vitality and inspired future generations of entrepreneurs.

Held this year on May 22 at the Hyatt Regency New Orleans Hotel, the event kicked off with a procession introducing 16 past Hall of Fame members by class year, followed by welcome remarks by event Chair Vanessa Brown Claiborne and JA President Larry Washington. Madison Hatch, a junior at Chalmette High School, also spoke.

The 2025 Laureates were Judy Barrasso, founding member of Barrasso Usdin Kupperman Freeman & Sarver; Tommy Cvitanovich, owner and general manager of Drago’s Seafood Restaurant; Dr. Takeisha Davis, CEO and president of New Orleans East Hospital; Troy Henry, founder and managing partner of Henry Consulting, and Samir Mowad, senior vice president and general manager for Caesars Entertainment.

Adding to the evening’s significance, the Lifetime Achievement Award honored Henry Shane, chairman of Favrot & Shane Companies, and Canal Barge Co., led by Merritt Lane, received the Oscar J. Tolmas Charitable Trust Business of the Year recognition.

Claiborne presented each honoree with a crystal eagle — a symbol of entrepreneurial excellence — following a special video tribute for each awardee.

Founded on Feb. 11, 1825 in honor of President Thomas Jefferson, a year before he died, the parish encompassed a bigger footprint then than now, finally establishing its present borders with Orleans Parish in 1874.

To commemorate the parish’s start, the Jefferson Parish Bicentennial Ball was held on June 14 at Lakeside Shopping Center (which opened in 1960).

The entertainment was truly a once-in-a-lifetime: Emmy and Tony award-winner Kristin Chenoweth, who performed with an orchestra organized by Jefferson Performing Arts Society’s Dennis Assaf; Irma Thomas; Sister Sledge; Deacon John; The Victory Belles; The Yat Pack; NOLA Vox, Tom Hook and Rachel Fleetwood.

Food was provided by more than 50 restaurants, and there were two martini bars among the libation stations, an Orange Julius station and exhibits showcasing the history of the parish.

The ball was presented by the New Orleans Saints, New Orleans Pelicans, Gayle and Tom Benson Charitable Foundation, Feil Organization, Lakeside Shopping Center and Entergy Corporation.

“The Bicentennial Ball transformed Lakeside Shopping Center into a stunning ballroom that honored both the history and the present of Jefferson Parish. Thoughtfully curated decor, live music, and more than 50 food stations showcased the rich cultural diversity that defines our parish,” said event Chair Lynda Nugent Smith.

Proceeds from the benefit will go to the Jefferson Community Foundation to strengthen educational opportunities across the parish.

Fun Fact: The ball was enhanced with a variety of experiences that made the evening memorable: trees decorated with photos representing each municipality, minigolf and arcade games, a pop-up sports lounge to view the College World Series, and the Lee Michaels Fine Jewelry photo wall where guests could try on $1 million worth of jewelry.

Jewish Federation of Greater New Orleans Goldring-Woldenberg Donor Appreciation Dinner

W

hat better way to honor those giving back to the community than with a special event just for them. The Jewish Federation of Greater New Orleans did just that when it hosted its annual Goldring-Woldenberg Donor Appreciation Dinner.

Held on May 29 at the Windsor Court Hotel, which underwrote the event with Louellen and Darryl Berger, the donor dinner also featured music from Russell Ramirez Trio and keynote speaker Shearon Roberts, Ph.D. “The 2025 Goldring-Woldenberg Donor Appreciation Dinner was about more than gratitude — it was about building bridges. Our major donors make it possible for the Federation to foster deep connections and cultural understanding across New Orleans,” said Melinda Mintz, dinner co-chair and federation board chair.

“Through initiatives like the Behar Center for Jewish-Multicultural Affairs’ work with HBCUs, we are creating spaces where Jewish and Black communities can come together in shared purpose.

That spirit of collaboration is what strengthens our city and ensures a vibrant, inclusive future,” Mintz added.

RT&SOUL 2025: Golden Gala, presented

by The Meraux Foundation and The NOCCA Foundation, was a showcase of creativity that celebrated the 50th anniversary of the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts.

This milestone evening, held May 17 on NOCCA’s campus, offered a progression of festivities that carried the fêting into the late hours.

The entertainment reflected NOCCA’s enduring influence, with performances by alumni including Sasha Masakowski, Big Sam’s Funky Nation and Preservation Hall. Current NOCCA music students added their own accomplished presence.

Culinary artistry held its own spotlight, with a menu prepared by NOCCA Culinary Arts students and faculty under the guidance of Chef Stephen Stryjewski.

A silent auction invited spirited bidding, raising funds for NOCCA’s ongoing work.

Founded in 1973 and opened in 1974 by a coalition of artists, educators, business leaders, and community advocates, NOCCA has flourished into a nationally regarded institution that provides exceptional pre-professional instruction across culinary arts, dance, media arts, music, theatre arts, visual arts, and creative writing — all while upholding rigorous academic achievement.

“NOCCA Foundation ensures that the next generation of Southern artists is nurtured and supported,” said Elise Ryan, ART&SOUL 2025 co-chair, NOCCA alum and NOCCA Foundation board member. “I am so proud to support this amazing organization that plays a big role in making New Orleans such a unique place to live.”

New Orleans Wine & Food Experience Grand Tasting

S

ipping, savoring and serendipity were all in vintage form when New Orleans Wine & Food Experience hosted its Grand Tasting during five days (June 11-15) packed with activities for oenophiles and gourmands.

The Grand Tasting is a highlight for many, with its multiple offerings of wine, food and liquors. But the event, now in its 33rd iteration, also offered 15 unique wine and food labs and hands-on experiences such as EHRET Winery & Nonna Randazzo’s Bakery: The Art of Wine & Pastry Pairing and Art & Wine: An Inspirational Afternoon at Ogden Museum, in addition to its wine dinners, Vinola, Tournament of Rosés, and Burlesque, Bubbly and Brunch.

Various NOWFE events featured the winners of the 2025 Culinary Competition, held before the event, with categories: soups and stews, meat and poultry (pork), meat and poultry (beef), meat and poultry (chicken), seafood (cold), seafood (hot), Lagniappe (appetizer), Lagniappe (pasta) and desserts. Best of Show for Savory was Restaurant R’evolution Chef de Cuisine Christopher Anderson with a Louisiana Boil with corn mousse, andouille powder and potato purée, and Best of Show for Sweet was Jack Rose Pastry Chef Eka Soenarko with “Purple Rain” trés leches of white miso, cream cheese Chantilly and purple ube bourbon tuile.

Since the event was founded, it has raised more than $1.5 million for local nonprofit organizations.

he New Orleans Police & Justice Foundation hosted its 30th annual Stake Out for Justice Luncheon, where civic leaders, business figures, elected officials and members of the region’s law enforcement community gathered to support the foundation, honor first responders and local law enforcement, and mark the strides in public safety made across the city over the past year.

Held Sept. 4 at the Sheraton New Orleans Hotel, among the speakers were Louisiana Lt. Gov. Billy Nungesser, Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill, Louisiana State Police Col. Robert Hodges and NOPD Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick. They delivered remarks highlighting the progress in reducing crime, strengthening policing strategies and restoring confidence in public safety.

An awards presentation recognized exemplary community service: the 2025 Honorary Crimefighter was Gayle Benson and the Badge of Honor recipients were the NOPD Bomb Squad, NOPD Det. Raychel Wiley, NOPD SPO Mikal Salahuddin, NOPD Det. Jeraire Bridges, NOPD SPO Bronson Gettridge and LSP Trooper First Class Nicholas Folse. Partner of Police accolades were presented to EMS Capt. Matteo Avocato and Lamar Advertising Vice President Bob Lanaux.

The National WWII Museum American Spirit Awards

W

hat began as the National D-Day Museum in a single exhibition hall on June 6, 2000 — the 56th anniversary of the Normandy landings — evolved and grew through the years to become renowned The National WWII Museum.

This year, the museum commemorated its 25th anniversary with a week-long (May 29-June 7) slate of activities at the museum, starting with a patron and American Spirit Awards recipient reception. The next night — the official kick-off — was the gala for the American Spirit Awards, the museum’s highest honor. The award, presented annually, pays tribute to individuals whose impact and vision have mirrored the spirit of the men and women who served during World War II. The 2025 honorees were: New Orleans businessman Donald T. “Boysie” Bollinger, World War II veteran C. Paul Hilliard, and founding President and CEO Emeritus Gordon H. “Nick” Mueller.

“This year’s American Spirit Award honorees have helped build this museum into what it is today and have ensured the history of World War II is kept alive,” said Stephen J. Watson, president and CEO of the museum. “Without question, their vision, grit and tenacity paved the way for the Museum’s ambitious growth over the past 25 years. Their leadership will continue to guide our institution as we mark this milestone anniversary and begin an exciting new chapter.”

The afternoon before the awards gala was the Billy Michal Student Leadership Forum Luncheon, presented by the Kevin G. Clifford Family, when 51 students from across the U.S. were honored for their American spirit. Ogden Museum of Southern Art Magnolia Ball

t was a night when art, music and food collaborated to create fundraising magic when the Ogden Museum of Southern Art’s popular Magnolia Ball returned on June 7.

The party, held in honor of the exhibition “Hoa Tay (Flower Hands): Southern Artists of the Vietnamese Diaspora,” was spread throughout the museum complex, offering fun elements for guests to enjoy, in addition to the museum’s exhibitions.

Members of Krewe des Fleurs welcomed guests, while entertainment included DJ Heelturn and DJ Juane Jordan in the atrium, Mia Borders on the rooftop terrace and what proved to be very popular, the karaoke stage in the Patrick F. Taylor Library. A glitter bar and tattoo station (with temporary tattoos inspired by the “Hoa Tay” exhibition) helped adorn guests, who could also make paper flowers and enjoy Bau Cua Cá Cop (Gourd, Crab, Shrimp, Fish), which is a traditional Vietnamese dice game primarily played during Lunar New Year celebrations.

In keeping with the Vietnamese mood, food included chè thach (sort of a jelly “soup” by VIET (Vietnamese Initiatives in Economic Training) and pot stickers and vegetable rolls from Magasin Vietnamese Cafe. Other delicacies included a summer asparagus and truffled egg salad tartlet from Mamou, masitas de puerto from Manolito, maguro tartare from Tsunami and grape leaves from Saba, to name a few.

The silent auction, with more than 65 items, stood out for its quality offerings, including art by Christian Dinh and Katie McCall, as well as items from Hotel Saint Vincent, among others.

Fake (Faux) Pho Serves 4 4 cubes Bao Long brand pho base (any flavor, find it at the Hong Kong Market) plus 2½ quarts water or 2½ quarts broth (chicken, beef, vegetarian, whatever) simmered for 20 minutes over medium-low heat with a 1-inch piece lemongrass, 4 pieces star anise, 1/2inch piece of cinnamon bark, and 2 pieces crushed garlic, then strained Choose 1 or more: 1 large boneless, skinless chicken breast, thinly sliced; 8 ounces leftover filet; 1/2 pound peeled and deveined Gulf shrimp; 1 package frozen Asian soup dumplings (any variety) 1 cup sliced shiitake mushrooms (the frozen ones from Trader Joe’s are great here) 3 baby boy choy, thinly sliced 2 shallots or 2 green scallions, thinly sliced Fresh mung bean sprouts, and/or shredded cabbage (any variety) Thai basil Cilantro Lime juice Sriracha and/or garlic chili paste Sliced jalapeno peppers, optional Fried shallots or fried garlic, not virtuous, so optional 1. In a large sauce pot, bring water and pho base or seasoned broth to a raging boil over high heat. Toss in meat, shitakes, baby bok choy, and shallots or scallions. Return to a raging boil. Remove from heat.

Faux Pho

Hitting reset for a healthy start to a new year

I

used to go on a clean-eating binge at the start of every year, sickened by the excesses of the prior season while gearing up for the ultimate excess of Mardi Gras.

I gave this up years ago when I flipped the practice of a season of vegetable-forward eating to a daily one. I knocked off twenty pounds, have kept it off, and look and feel exponentially better. I still enjoy small samples of gumbo and remain highly susceptible to the charms of fried chicken, but now I enjoy them more as they are infrequent treats.

One of my go-tos for an easy, quick fix is a concoction I dubbed Fake or Faux Pho years ago. It is packed with flavor, vegetables, lean protein, and in lieu

of noodles (oh, no! Carbs!), thinly sliced or shredded cabbage or mung bean sprouts. When not feeling virtuous, I top this with a giant scoop of Fly By Jing Sichuan Chili Crisp, which I love obsessively, but it packs a punch with oil and 100 calories per tablespoon, which adds up fast. When virtue matters, I reach for Trader Joe’s Crunchy Chili-Onion Sprinkle, which is not as good as the real deal, but it still adds loads of flavor and texture. The culprit in this dish is salt, so hold off on adding more; otherwise, you could eat this all day and still not move the needle.

I make a big batch of this at the start of the week and have it for lunch at my desk every day.

one of the most powerful disruptors of the gut microbiome. It can thin the gut lining, increase inflammation and shift the balance of beneficial bacteria – changes that can show up as bloating, poor sleep, low energy, cravings, and mood fluctuations.

And after the swirl of holiday celebrating, most of us are already primed for a reset.

Even a short break – two to four weeks – can noticeably improve microbial diversity, digestion, sleep quality, and emotional steadiness.

The Gut Microbiome A foundation for the New Year

E

very January, there’s this pressure to overhaul everything – food, fitness, sleep, mindset – you know, the whole ‘New Year, new you’ thinking. I’m not a big fan of that all-or-nothing approach.

It feels exhausting and unrealistic, and more importantly, disconnected from how real, sustainable change actually happens.

Throughout the past year, a familiar topic has been showing up that I realized could be a useful guide for the refreshed habits we choose to focus on. It’s not sexy or a hot topic at dinner parties, but it’s impactful: the gut microbiome. And the more I thought about it, the more I realized that this little ecosystem inside us might just be the perfect anchor for a sustainable and meaningful reset.

Because when our gut microbiome is nourished and thriving, everything tends to run more smoothly – digestion, yes, but also mood, immune function, metabolism, inflammation, even how we respond to stress. I often say,

only half-joking, that if everyone had a healthier gut microbiome, the world might be a more peaceful place. Our microbes influence a surprising amount of our headspace.

And the best part? The habits that support a healthy microbiome are the same habits that support overall wellbeing. Think of it as one central shift – with a bunch of positive ripple effects.

So first: what is the microbiome, and why does it matter so much? Our gut

microbiome is the community of trillions of bacteria and microorganisms living primarily in our large intestine.

These tiny organisms help break down food, produce vitamins, communicate with our immune system, regulate inflammation, influence hormones and send signals along the gut–brain axis.

When this little village of bacteria is diverse and balanced, we tend to feel better – physically, mentally, emotionally.

When it’s out of balance, the effects can show up in unexpected ways: bloating,

3. Add more plants (variety matters). A helpful benchmark is about 25 different plants a week – easier than it sounds (a simple guacamole can quickly add several). And even adding one additional plant food per day is a win.

4. Build in fermented foods. A serving

fatigue, cravings, skin issues, brain fog, poor sleep, headaches, anxiousness, frequent colds, sudden intolerance to foods we’ve always tolerated – and just a general sense that we feel “off.”

How do we know if our gut health is in good shape? There’s no single perfect

test, and most people don’t need specialty microbiome panels. Instead, look at overall patterns – how steady digestion feels, how much energy we have after eating, how well we sleep, how often we get sick, and how clear or foggy our mood and focus feel. When the microbiome is out of balance, it often shows up in subtle ways long before anything appears on a lab report.

So, what actually supports a healthy microbiome? Here’s the encouraging

part: it’s not complicated, and it doesn’t require expensive supplements. It’s mostly gentle, accessible habits we can layer into daily life.

of yogurt, kefir, kimchi, or sauerkraut can introduce beneficial bacteria and help support microbial balance.

5. Prioritize sleep, movement, and stress care. Our microbes respond to these things, too. Poor sleep can reduce microbial diversity; physical activity tends to increase it. Stress can shift our microbial balance toward inflammation. Small habits – walking after dinner, deep breathing exercises, consistent sleep times – make a real impact.

A microbiome-friendly year ahead. I love the (non-standard) idea of using the gut microbiome as the foundation for a New Year mindset – not all-or-nothing, not perfectionistic, but nurturing and steady. Instead of focusing on restriction or reinvention, we’re focusing on creating an internal environment that helps everything else fall into place.

When our gut feels better, everything feels better – energy, mood, clarity. It’s the kind of reset that truly lasts.

Content Creation Anticipating the magic before it happens

I

n recent years, a new way to document a couple’s big day has emerged. Alongside the photographer and videographer, many are adding a content creator to provide a personally curated, almost instant, way to share their happiness. Local content creators Lauren Schnell, owner of Schnell Studio, and Chloe LeBlanc, founder of LeBlanc Standard, weigh in on this growing trend.

Schnell points out that the wedding industry is evolving, catering to couples who grew up online and are used to seeing life’s stories unfold in real time.

This immediacy is something unique to content creators: “Couples want to relive those moments while they’re lying in bed together the night of or the morning after their wedding, not six months later.

Content creators give them that immediacy, that intimacy, and that storytelling

layer that simply can’t be created after the fact.”

Echoing this sentiment, LeBlanc notes that there’s a “huge appeal in receiving a large quantity of candid, unscripted moments within 24 hours; the instant gratification is unmatched! Our couples love waking up the next morning with a full gallery already waiting for them, filled with real, emotional, in-between moments that feel like reliving their day.”

LeBlanc explains that capturing these moments involves constant shooting during the ceremony and reception, getting the spontaneous moments that happen throughout the celebration. She describes her presence as a fly on the wall, enabling her to preserve “everything that typically slips through the cracks... the quick glances, the background conversations, the laughter between friends, the way a parent looks at you when they

think no one’s watching.”

Schnell also emphasizes her focus on “the emotional micro-moments...the groom wiping tears when he sees his bride, the bridal party locking eyes and holding back tears, the private giggles and smiles between a couple that they don’t even realize they’re giving each other. It’s all the unspoken energy that makes a ceremony feel alive.”

Preserving these moments requires a trained editorial eye and a dedication to narrating a couple’s story with intention.

For this reason, Schnell encourages couples to ask content creators about their approach to storytelling. She also notes the importance of looking at a creator’s portfolio to ensure that their style aligns with the couple’s vision. Elaborating on this advice, LeBlanc adds that couples should consider whether they want a purely behind-the-scenes approach, or

someone who will curate posed moments and fun wedding TikTok trends.

No matter the creator’s approach, both experts agree that the couple should relax and not worry about performing for the camera. Rather than trying to force content-worthy moments, they should let the moments unfold organically and authentically. Ultimately, content creators are dedicated to helping couples remember how it felt to be present in those moments, a feeling they can return to for the rest of their lives.

hen our community faces hardship, the Junior League of New Orleans (JLNO) steps up to meet the moment. When devastating floods impacted our Texas neighbors, JLNO mobilized quickly, raising more than $15,000 in direct aid to support relief and recovery efforts.

During National Diaper Need Awareness Week, our members and partners once again showed the power of collective action, exceeding our goal by collecting more than 20,000 essential items for families across Greater New Orleans. And when the government shutdown left many local families uncertain about their next paycheck or meal, JLNO answered the call once more. In partnership with local nonprofits, we launched a communitywide food and essentials drive and committed to supporting our JLNO Diaper Bank community partners with 100% of their supply needs through the end of the year—ensuring no family would go without. Through every storm and every struggle, JLNO continues to uplift, serve and stand beside our community.

Because when New Orleans needs us, we’re already there.

unior League of New Orleans wraps up another successful season of training children through its Safe Sitter® program! A total of eleven full-day sessions made up of 163 boys and girls between the ages of 11 and 14 (grades 6-8) were held between July and October 2025. The classes are great for building confidence and independence for when kids are babysitting or staying home alone.

The day stays busy as students engage with the instructors and each other through a mix of lecture, role playing and hands-on exercises. Sessions are limited to 32 participants, giving each attendee ample time to take in the new information and practice the skills taught, whether that is diapering a baby or performing CPR and mouth-to-mouth on a practice mannequin. In addition to teaching first aid, CPR and choking rescue, the course teaches safety precautions and basic child care. For example, students learn what to do if the power goes out or if the weather turns ugly. Most importantly, they learn how and when to call for assistance. Finally, the training touches on the practicalities of babysitting for others and running a babysitting business. It prepares students to have conversations about pay, expectations and emergency contact information upfront.

Safe Sitter® is a national training program, and the Junior League of New Orleans is honored to be considered a Gold Status provider by the national organization. Be on the lookout for more Safe Sitter® opportunities in Spring 2026!

ach December, just as the city slips into its glittering holiday rhythm, members of the Junior League of New Orleans gather at Educare New Orleans with carloads of brightly wrapped toys.

For more than a decade, JLNO’s annual holiday gift drive has become a cherished tradition, lighting up the classrooms of Educare with laughter, gratitude and hope.

Located in the Bayou District, Educare New Orleans is part of a national network of high-quality early childhood centers designed to give every child, regardless of income, a strong start. Serving infants through age five, the school blends research-based teaching with family engagement and social support. In a city still rebuilding from generations of inequity and disaster, Educare’s mission is clear: to level the playing field from a child’s very first day of school.

The partnership between JLNO and Educare began in 2014 and has grown stronger each year. In mid-December, JLNO members help sort and deliver gifts, which are carefully chosen and donated by our volunteers for each individual child. The drive fills the school’s hallways with boxes of color.

“The energy is excitement, happiness, and joy,” shares Educare School Director, Angelique Shorty-Belisle. Shorty-Belisle goes on to explain, “It matters because it’s all about the kids, and it’s genuine. That day, the child is celebrated and the gift they receive may be the only gift they receive.”

Educare’s model depends on community partnerships like this one.

The school’s “two-generation” approach focuses as much on parents as on children, offering resources that strengthen family stability and confidence. JLNO’s continued involvement helps sustain that mission, reinforcing the idea that early childhood education is not only about learning letters and numbers, it’s about nurturing potential, dignity, and joy. In a season built on giving, JLNO’s partnership with Educare reminds us that the greatest gifts are often the smallest ones—wrapped in kindness, delivered with care and opened with wonder.

Junior League of New Orleans Announces 2025 Volunteer of the Year !"#%'30145*0#/"0+#

he spirit of service rests in the foundation of the Junior League of New Orleans (JLNO), and has been the organization’s driving force for over 100 years.

From the members who serve quietly yet strongly in the background to the ones who are front and center leading initiatives to push the needle on projects such as the JLNO Diaper Bank or birthday celebrations at Covenant House, local women are making a huge impact on the league and the City of New Orleans in a time when their passion, hard work and enthusiasm are needed the most. In an effort to highlight these outstanding women, JLNO launched a new annual award—the Volunteer of the Year Award— recognizing a Junior League of New Orleans Active Member who has demonstrated outstanding service, leadership and dedication. This woman exemplifies everything JLNO stands for—not just through her time and energy—but through her passion, initiative and commitment to the mission of JLNO and to the community around it.

The Junior League of New Orleans is proud to honor Kenya K. Myles, MSN, RN, as the inaugural JLNO Volunteer of the Year. Kenya’s service to JLNO began even before she became a member when she coordinated and hosted a diaper drive and sorting shift with the youth ministry at her church, Greater St. Stephen Full Gospel Baptist Church.

As a registered nurse at the Ochsner Medical Surgical Unit on the Westbank, Kenya saw firsthand how many families needed essential supplies and how important it was to support the work of the JLNO Diaper Bank, ensuring that babies and families continue to receive essential supplies, particularly during and despite the pandemic. Two years later, in 2020, she officially joined the Junior League of New Orleans.

Since becoming an Active Member, Kenya has served in several leadership roles within the league and has coordinated five diaper drives—four for JLNO and one for another nonprofit—totaling over 30,000 diapers. She has had the opportunity to represent JLNO in a variety of volunteer assignments, such as packing school supplies for the GNO STEM Back to School Back Pack Giveaway, sorting

clothing donations for the Hurricane Laura Evacuees and Dress for Success, hosting diaper drives for Diaper Need Awareness Week, putting together bingo prize baskets and coordinating birthday celebrations for the residents of Covenant House and sorting and distributing thousands of diapers to JLNO’s community partners. She has also participated in training sessions on financial literacy and the Abolish Movement to end human trafficking.

Throughout her five-year tenure as a member of JLNO, Kenya has grown exponentially in the areas of professional volunteerism and nonprofit leadership and credits her mother for the inspiration to volunteer with organizations like the Junior League of New Orleans.

“My mother is the one who taught me the importance of giving my time, talent, and monetary gifts to those who are in need, less fortunate, or just because. If ‘blessed to be a blessing to others’ had a face, it would look like my mother. I am because she is,” Kenya shares.

Congratulations to Kenya Myles, whose spirit, creativity and commitment to the Junior League of New Orleans truly embody the heart of voluntarism and the heart of JLNO!

Junior League of New Orleans Gives ALICE A Voice !"#!0$$#&006$

n August 24, 2025, Junior League of New Orleans (JLNO) members were given the opportunity to participate in an interactive poverty simulation that sheds light on the daily challenges many people in our community face. This simulation was hosted by Women United and JLNO, in partnership with United Way of Southeast Louisiana and Newcomb Institute at Tulane University. It focused on the importance of the ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) Report–a report highlighting the large population of working individuals in the United States who earn more than the Federal Poverty Level but not enough to afford basic necessities in their communities.

Participants were able to put themselves in the shoes of an ALICE individual and were given scenarios in which they had to make decisions about rent, groceries, childcare, transportation and more.

ALICE households are often faced with making impossible choices:

fill a prescription or pay the heating bill? Get the car repaired or send your child to a quality daycare? ALICE individuals have a job and earn enough money to keep them just above the poverty line.

Approximately 41% of the U.S. population are ALICE—individuals who are living paycheck to paycheck and cannot make ends meet.

This simulation helped to paint a more realistic picture of the financial hardships many families in the New Orleans area face each day. During the simulation at JLNO Headquarters, not a single “family” was able to feed themselves every week. ALICE families are often just one emergency away from falling into financial ruin.

The event was eye-opening to participants, raised awareness and gave a voice to ALICE households. It showcased the gaps in our community and facilitated discussion about what support is needed so that fewer households are living on the edge of crisis. ith the start of another league year, Junior League of New Orleans is presented with the opportunity to welcome the 2025-2026 new member class!

Each March, Junior League of New Orleans (JLNO) opens its membership applications for women in the Greater New Orleans area looking to connect with other women and make a positive impact on their community. Each woman must be 23 years old as of June 1 to be eligible for membership. For the 2025-2026 year, JLNO is pleased to welcome 130 new members to the organization–a 40% increase from last year.

To kick off the year, new members were invited to attend a welcome dinner, where they shared a delicious meal and engaged in a scavenger hunt around JLNO’s Headquarters on Carondelet. They were put into groups and given fun clues that led them around the building, giving them the opportunity to familiarize themselves

One first-year Active member, Anne Kenny, remarked on her excitement over joining the Junior League of New Orleans last year and carrying on the legacy of her mother and grandmother, who were dedicated members of their respective leagues. Anne’s comments mirror many of our newest members as she explains, “I’m most looking forward to fully immersing myself in the spirit of the Junior League. Especially forging meaningful connections with women who share a passion for service and personal growth.

I’m excited to learn from experienced members, contribute my own perspective, and take part in projects that make a tangible difference in our community.”

JLNO Celebrates Find the Good Day with the Association of Junior Leagues International (AJLI) JLNO celebrated the Associationwide initiative, “Find the Good Day,” at its September 18, 2025, General Membership Meeting. The initiative overlapped with National Diaper Need Awareness Week (September 15-21, 2025) and perfectly aligned with JLNO’s ongoing commitment to solve diaper, period product and adult incontinence supplies shortages in the Greater New Orleans area. Collaborative and heightened efforts towards these two initiatives included donation drop-offs at various locations, including Ochsner Health Center for Children, Louisiana Children’s Museum and Sam’s Club and a JLNO Diaper Bank Sort Leader training following the evening meeting. Ultimately, Junior League of New Orleans exceeded its goal for the week by collecting an incredible 20,900 essential items for redistribution to the community in need.

Get on Board (GOB) Program Reaches New Heights JLNO’s annual and highly anticipated interactive workshop, “Get on Board,” returned to Headquarters on October 4, 2025, equipping attendees with the skills, knowledge and confidence needed for stronger board leadership and governance.

This year’s event hosted 75 individuals who represented 32 nonprofit organizations, which was double the previous year’s attendance (and the most recorded since its 2008 inception). Participants had an opportunity to earn CPE (continuing professional education) and CLE (continuing legal education) credits for completing the workshop. The one-day event also featured a networking mixer that allowed leaders to build connections and highlighted opportunities for service across nonprofit organizations.

Community Assistance Fund (CAF) Grants Awarded This year’s Community Assistance Fund (CAF) award recipients were recognized at JLNO’s General Membership Meeting on October 21, 2025.

CAF committee members reviewed over 70 applications before deciding on four finalists, who each received a $5,000 grant. Winners of a 2025 CAF Grant included: En-Hacore Community Center Orientation, Youth Run NOLA, Dinerral Shavers Education Fund and Street Side Library. With the inclusion of the $20,000 awarded in 2025, JLNO has now awarded $174,950 to over 22 nonprofit organizations since 2020 through CAF.

TOUCH-A-TRUCK® Rolls into the Pontchartrain Center Presented by Ochsner Children’s, TOUCH-A-TRUCK® returned to the Pontchartrain Center on Saturday, November 15, 2025. Families were thrilled by the special appearances of the Oscar Mayer Weinermobile and Colgate dental van while little ones delighted in the return of trucks, big machines and the Manning Family Children’s Hospital helicopter!

Attendees even had the opportunity to purchase raffle tickets for $2,500 in Disney gift cards powered by Cox. The event started on Friday with a special field trip day, serving 945 students from 15 schools. More than 70 volunteers and 32 sponsors helped ensure the success of TOUCH-ATRUCK® throughout the weekend, with special contributions from Cox, American Safety, Maritime Partners, Morris Bart, Raising Cane’s, Sunbelt Rentals and many more that heightened the experience for all attendees. In total, the event is estimated to have raised over $70,000 to support the mission and projects of the Junior League of New Orleans.

Holly Jolly Market Moves to Ursuline Academy with Resounding Success Holiday cheer was on full display the first week of December at JLNO’s Holly Jolly Market (HJM), cheerfully hosted at Ursuline Academy of New Orleans. Over the course of the two-night event, the new location offered ample space for 40 local vendors and plenty of parking for the nearly 1000 attendees. The first night’s soldout Preview Party (a 21+ event) featured sips from Tap Truck NOLA and snacks from Central City BBQ and Las Cruces. The array of beautiful items on display by local vendors—from Festive Fascinators (Bella Gifts to Geaux) to HJM shopping bags and ornaments (Golden Lily)—gave shoppers an opportunity to support local businesses and check off their list by discovering curated, unique gifts for their loved ones this season. League members, guests, students, staff, parents and grandparents alike were even able to enjoy photos with Santa and the Grinch. Overall, the 2025 Holly Jolly Market attendees left the event with full bags and full hearts.
