Enduring Devotion T

he Josephine, a stunning new event space on Napoleon Avenue, is a beautifully adaptable venue on the central Uptown corridor and a love letter to Our Lady Of Lourdes. The meticulous restoration preserved the grand Spanish Mission-style church, originally dedicated in 1925. Its arched windows, intricate terrazzo floors and gilt trim create a timeless backdrop for gatherings both intimate and grand. Massive wooden doors open to the Main Hall’s pristine white walls under a soaring domed roof, its historic altar remaining in place. The Lourdes Grotto is covered in luscious green Spanish moss with cheeky neon touches encouraging selfies. Flanking courtyards offer outdoor space and the former choir loft is now the Josephine Suite, a luxurious wedding-day retreat with a balcony view of the Main Hall reimagined with the bride in mind. “I believe a decadent dessert table makes a wedding unique by turning a final course into a grand statement,” says Ellie Zarraga-Mullins, owner of EZ Events Catering. “It’s an opportunity to move beyond a single tiered cake and create a dynamic, personalized experience. Instead of just a menu item, the dessert table becomes a visual centerpiece — a stunning installation that reflects the couple’s style and passion.”

She suggests playing with seasonal flavors to reflect the time of year and make the dessert table both tasteful and timely. “The desserts become an echo of the season’s natural bounty and a reflection of the time of year the couple is getting married,” she says, naming spiced apple tarts or a rich dark chocolate cake with a peppermint ganache for winter and elderflower and lemon trifles for spring.

To truly impress your guests, Zarraga-Mullins recommends ideas like interactive dessert stations such as a build-your-own crepe station, themed dessert bars that tell a story by way of a “European patisserie” set up with authentic French macarons, Italian cannoli and Spanish churros, as well as deconstructed dessert flights and festive towers of elegant bites.

“Some of the most “wow-worthy” ideas I’ve seen are less about the desserts themselves and more about the environment,” says Zarranga-Mullins. “I love a great backdrop, whether it’s a custom neon sign with a fun phrase,

a dramatic floral wall or a unique tiered display like a donut wall. I’ve also seen beautiful uses of a cohesive color story — a table of all-white desserts with different textures and shapes, or one with a striking ombré effect. To add to the allure of a sweet set up, Andrea Mattocks, pastry supervisor for The Ritz-Carlton, suggests miniature items for crowd appeal.

“Scaling down that style of décor is so fun for a dessert table,” she says.

“Making individual sized carrot cakes and topping them with a tiny gold carrot would be super fun. I love the idea of decorating with fresh and seasonably available edible florals,” she says, including marigold petals. “Having options at a dessert spread can really expand the sweet palate for weddings.”

And to keep the menu enticingly local, she recommends showcasing Southern-inspired delights so your guests can get a taste of the flavors quintessential to New Orleans, referencing winter strawberries as a holiday wedding treat or putting golden okra atop a cake for an unexpected addition.

For the Mardi Gras enthusiast, Mattocks recalls a king cake dessert table display that gave party attendees a time-honored reason to revel.

“We made the king cakes in increasing diameter, displayed on a tiered stand that our engineering department made for this occasion,” she says, noting what a great opportunity this type of display is to introduce both savory and sweet fillings and flavors. “I personally love that king cake is seasonal, but it is extra special to give our out-of-town guests a little taste of Mardi Gras, regardless of the time of year.” b

“Coordinating cocktails brings a sense of intention to the celebration,” says Millie Adler, proprietress at Latrobe’s. “Whether it’s through a shared color palette that mirrors the décor, flavors that complement the menu or playful garnishes that tie them together, drinks become part of the overall design. Guests may not consciously identify it, but they feel the harmony and that subtle cohesion elevates the entire experience making the celebration feel seamless and thoughtfully curated.”

Naming ideas like lavender spritzes, zingy French 75s and creamy brandy milk punches, she suggests couples start their cocktail selection by determining the ambience they want to create and then utilizing the bar menu to paint that picture.

“A cocktail can become a liquid love letter,” she says. “My biggest tip for couples is to use their cocktails to tell a story. Instead of a simple “his and hers” drink, we can create a narrative around them. Maybe the “his” cocktail is named after the street where they had their first date and features a liquor he loves. The “hers” could be inspired by a trip they took together, with a specific herb or fruit they discovered on their travels. This makes the signature drinks an authentic part of the couple’s personal history, not just another menu item.”

From choosing the right glassware to incorporating matching garnishes like gold dusted sugar rims and edible flowers, Zarraga-Mullins encourages couples to get creative with the artistic details of the drinks.

“Some of the most popular ideas right now are ones that are interactive or visually striking,” she says. “I love drinks with a smoking element, like a cocktail with a sprig of rosemary that’s been torched to release a smoky aroma,” she says, referencing concepts like pecan-infused rye whiskey and fig-infused rum for richer, winter drinks, and refreshing mint and fresh Louisiana strawberries or kumquats for lighter spring sips.

“I also love playing with color tints in the drinks,” she notes. “Using natural ingredients like butterfly pea flower tea, we can create a cocktail that starts blue and changes to purple as you add citrus, matching the wedding colors in a fun, interactive way. ew Orleans’ music scene plays out like a rich buffet with countless tasty offerings.

Whether its blues, traditional jazz, funk, hip hop, gospel or some unique melding of genres, the possibilities and offerings infinitely delight music buffs heading out for a listen. But that much largesse can rattle the confidence of couples tasked with choosing tunes for the various stages of their wedding journey. “Music sets a mood,” says Robin Barnes (robinbarnesmusic.com), the Songbird of New Orleans, part of the romantic duo Da Lovebirds, and funk queen with Robin Barnes and the Fiya Birds. With all those other pesky decisions that must be made — flowers, venue, décor, outfits, theme, seating chart — the music selections might fall by the wayside until it’s too late. But: Here’s a thought. What if you chose and booked the music first? Or at least second, right after you picked the venue. That seems like a very New Orleans thing to do. Let the music lead the way.

It’s truly about finding the sound that feels like their story,” she says. Working with such incredible artists has shown Castorena how meaningful live music can be for every stage of a couple’s journey from the proposal to the wedding day and beyond. “Music has a way of underscoring life’s most emotional moments. I’ve had couples book artists for surprise songs during proposals, welcome receptions that set the tone for the entire wedding weekend and even curated performances for milestone anniversaries and family gatherings years later. It’s such a beautiful reminder that music doesn’t just accompany these memories, it creates them,” she says, noting that the artists she works with absolutely love being part of wedding and engagement joy.

But where to start? If you’ve got an absolute preference, choosing an artist or style of music might be less daunting, but making decisions together and discovering you disagree could lead to your first fight. One way to narrow it down is to talk it out, but even better, get out there and listen to some artists. Whether it’s at a festival, on Frenchmen Street within live music clubs such as

The Spotted Cat, Snug Harbor, DBA or Three Muses, in hotel venues like The Ritz-Carlton, New Orleans’ Davenport Lounge or at church, you’ll soon discover how your tastes align. Robin Barnes suggests: “If you’ve got time, go out and become a tourist in your own town.” She recounts how during her wedding adventure, she and husband Pat Casey celebrated their love on a gondola ride through City Park’s lagoons. “This is the perfect place for a proposal or to treat wedding party friends,” she says. To add a musical note, hire a solo violinist to perform on the ride, or as a surprise after disembarking. Nola Gondola’s authentic Venetian gondolas, complete with jaunty gondolieri, hold 2-6 riders and have soundtracked Italian music piping through their system for a cheesy bit of musical fun.

A word of caution regarding proposals. Resident musician at The Ritz-Carlton, New Orleans, Jeremy Davenport (jeremydavenport.com), known for his original lyrics, storytelling and unique jazz sound, warns enamored folks planning to pop the question in a public setting to be sure both parties are on the same page from the commitment standpoint. “I’ve seen it go wrong so many times on my own stage,” he says. “Maybe skip the impromptu proposal, so you don’t get stuck with the mike in your hand.” Instead, he welcomes the opportunity to do private shows for couples of one mind, whether it’s for a proposal in the hotel’s top suite, The Residence, or at an event such as a rehearsal dinner. “Most of my music is very romantic, so it’s really appropriate for that,” he says. Fun fact: Davenport played at Sofia Vergara’s wedding to Joe Manganiello, lighting up their first dance as well as at Emeril and Alden Lagasse’s matrimonial events. Maybe he can do the same at your wedding.

Bachelor and bachelorette parties don’t have to be all about jouncing down Bourbon Street, big libation in hand. Why not get physical — and do it to live music at that?
