What to consider when setting up a Junior ISA

Future-proofing In these challenging times, the long-term financial future of our children might not feel like an immediate priority. But what the pandemic has illustrated starkly are the consequences of failing to plan, either collectively or as individuals and families. Investing some time now could be worth a lot more to our children in the decades to come. Making the most of their Junior ISA opportunity is one way to do it. Please get in contact for help with setting up investments for your children. The value of an investment with St. James’s Place will be directly linked to the performance of the funds selected and may fall as well as rise. You may get back less than the amount invested. The favourable tax treatment of Junior ISAs may be subject to changes in legislation in the future. The levels and bases of taxation, and reliefs from taxation, can change at any time and are dependent on individual circumstances. A Junior ISA is a great way to give children a financial head start, but parents need to invest with a long-term view as well

The pandemic has impacted everyone’s lives and plans turned upside down. Younger adults have had university education reduced to online learning, house purchases delayed, and perhaps weddings postponed, as the pandemic closed down society and the economy. But normality will return, and those financial milestones will continue to be the life goals of many of today’s and tomorrow’s children. What will also remain is the need for families to save and invest to help their children achieve those goals. For what was once a ‘nice to do’ is increasingly a financial necessity. The average house deposit put down by a first-time buyer in 2020 was over £57,0001. The total cost of going to university is typically £56,000 for a three-year course2. Anyone looking for ways to help a child save for the future should consider a Junior ISA first. The tax-efficiency and simplicity of Junior ISAs have contributed to them becoming an increasingly popular way to save for young people. In recognition of this popularity, and perhaps the importance of saving for children, the annual investment limit on a Junior ISA was more than doubled to £9,000 from April last year. Anyone can contribute to a Junior ISA, although they must be opened and managed by a parent or guardian. All the funds within a Junior ISA belong to the child and are locked away until the child is 18. At 16, however, the child can take over control of the account, which can be a good way to learn more about savings

and investment. “For grandparents or family friends with estate planning needs, using lifetime gifting exemptions to contribute to a Junior ISA is a great way of passing wealth on to younger generations,” suggests Joe Kavanagh, Investment Communications Consultant at St. James’s Place. “Another advantage is that you may well live to see how your contributions have made a difference, when the child comes of age.” You can either pay a lump sum into a Junior ISA or set up regular contributions, which allows the flexibility to fit in with any other gifting arrangements you may have made. The money in a Junior ISA can be invested in cash, shares or both. Take the long-term view Over £3.2 billion of Junior ISA funds are sitting in cash – that’s 61% of the total4.

With interest rates at new lows, these savings are almost certainly generating negative real returns after taking into account the corrosive effect of inflation. Making an early start with a Junior ISA means that money could be invested tax-efficiently for 18 years; and for much longer given the high proportion of funds rolling over into a standard ISA on maturity. That makes it a real long-term opportunity to accumulate wealth. The graph below illustrates what you could achieve by starting to save early and giving your money time to compound returns. It compares the returns that could be achieved by the age of 30 if you start a regular investment from birth, with those for a child who starts saving into a standard ISA, when allowed, from the age of 16. IN THE LIMELIGHT

A showstopping new venue Laurel’s Theatre is Whitley Bay’s cool new venue for artists, culture seekers and foodies alike. Nicole Wood chats to Jamie Eastlake, the creative brains behind the business...

Award-winning theatre producer Jamie Eastlake is one half of the brilliant duo behind Laurel’s Theatre - a year-long project to transform an old social club into an uber-cool hangout now consisting of a theatre, comedy club, bar and restaurant. Alongside his writer and filmmaking business partner, Stephen Robertson, the pair hatched a plan and with hard work and dedication poured in, Laurel’s Theatre was born. Named after and in honour of Stan Laurel, whose father ran theatres on the North East coast, Laurel’s aims to provide a hub for artists and tapas lovers alike. As I sit down to chat with Jamie to discuss his latest venture, we both immediately agree this is exactly what the North East needs. With a passion for theatre and his northern roots, Jamie was determined to make big things happen here in our region and boy has he done just that. “Theatre is always something I’ve been interested in and we’ve toyed around with this idea for years, but now feels like the perfect time. A lot of people have come back home and I think living through a pandemic has taught us that if we want to make it, then we can make it from our hometowns. Now is the time to kick-start our careers again,” explains Jamie. “We feel like we’ve got enough credibility from our award-winning work in London to make a bit of noise here. The North East is getting there, but we need to make it a place for creatives to be able to flourish, we don’t have to move to London to be able to progress in creative careers. “It does feel like there’s a bit of movement and we’re ecstatic to be part of that. The BBC has just announced that Newcastle will be its first ‘city of comedy’ and a Radio 4 comedy series, yet to be announced, will also be recorded in Newcastle. There’s definitely something happening and I think more and more people are starting to realise and it’s about time, I think it’s been forgotten about for so long so it’s great to see and great to be part of it,” Jamie adds. After a successful stint in London, the Olivier award-winning Theatre N16 Ltd returned home to the North East following the loss of a dear friend and business partner of Jamie’s. “I’ve always loved theatre. My mother was adamant that I should work in a bank, but I told her that I was going to be an actor when I was younger and so I moved to London and tried to find the streets paved with gold. I then realised I was more of a facilitator, producer and director and that’s sort of where it all stemmed from.

“We had great success in London for a while, but after losing a couple of leases and the passing of my business partner, I came back to the North East broken, and when the pandemic happened I had a lot of spare time on my hands and set up a little bar and entertainment venue in Blyth. A few months later, a good friend of mine approached me about doing a similar thing down the coast at Whitley Bay, but on a bigger scale. Our aim is to tell stories and obviously that can be quite difficult in the working-class wilds of Blyth and Northumberland, but that’s what I’m doing. I’m here trying to bring something back to the North East coast,” he tells me. Even during a pandemic, the success of Laurences, their small business venture in Blyth, encouraged the duo to take their

We feel like we’ve got enough credibility from our award-winning work in London to make a bit of noise here business one step further. “The concept had been in our heads for a good few years and following the success of our food and drinks operation at Laurences, we knew we could do it. We got our heads together and started property hunting around December 2020 and we came across this old social club and decided to go for it and build it from the ground up. “There were a lot of dead pigeons in here when we first took on the property and a lot of it needed renovating including the

ceilings, so there’s been plenty of hard work put into it. At one point we realised there was a time where we hadn’t slept for 57 hours. It was a quick process, but we set ourselves a deadline because if we didn’t we would have been working on it for at least another two years,” Jamie laughs. The whole vibe here is that it’s somewhere you can go and have a good time. It’s clear to see that it’s somewhere artists have come together and made a place for other artists to express themselves too. With tons of cool

art and graffiti work on the walls, it sets a different tone for what some might expect from the theatre. “The idea behind incorporating the food is we want it to be a place you can come and have a night out, you don’t need to go out for food beforehand,” explains Jamie. “My mates think that theatre is a bit rubbish and I think there’s a lot of misconception around what theatre is, especially here. For us, it’s about telling stories and telling them well in an environment where you can have a good time, have a good drink, enjoy some really nice food and just make a night of it. “Our menu is packed out with lots of great options. We try to do something a bit different, there are a lot of tapas places around here, but we’re quite different, our tapas is a mix of Mexican and Geordie street

food - it’s a bit edgy, a bit different and a bit alternative, somewhere that you can watch the footy at the same time. It’s a safe space for those who wouldn’t usually go to or enjoy the theatre to take the opportunity to enjoy it,” he adds. Food and good vibes aside, when it comes to the shows taking centre stage here, theatre lovers are in for a treat. “Beg, borrow and steal is the process for putting shows together at the moment,” Jamie laughs. “But we are a professional organisation, it’s not amateur gigs, it is all professionally done and paid for. Our thoughts are that if we can kick-start stories here then why can’t they be huge in the West End within ten years. “But it doesn’t come easy, we’re finding new

talent while also trying to raise funds for the production. A lot of stuff comes from unsolicited script submissions, which we spend a lot of our time reading through and we have many production companies pitching to us. We’ve sought out and commissioned a couple of writers we want to work with and we gave them a little pot of money to start with and there are things in development that are going to open in the next few years,” he adds. Kickstarting careers, working with local

artists and celebrating an all-welcome policy, Laurel’s Theatre is a community for all. With upcoming plans to introduce Laurels Club, a membership for people to head along, use the impressive space, drink free coffee and spend the day, this niche business along the North East coast is a place for ideas to come to life, a place for artists to play and somewhere to just be yourself and let your imagination run wild. A truly unique and exciting step for the North East with something different for all to enjoy, and with a long list of brilliant and exciting upcoming shows, Whitley Bay’s newest theatre is expected to be full of artists and audience members alike. laurelswhitley.co.uk

COMING OUT OF THE DARK

Light it up The upcoming Lumiere Festival promises to add light, colour and positivity to our lives following a dark and gloomy 2020 says Artichoke director, Helen Marriage. Nicole Wood finds out more… When I cast my thoughts back to this time last year - a time filled with loss, sadness, the same four walls and the only in-person conversation you had was with your household bubble - it’s almost hard to believe that I’m sitting down to chat with Helen Marriage to discuss this year’s Lumiere Festival. “Lumiere only programmes every two years, so we were lucky enough to never have missed a show, but on a personal level, everyone’s lives were uprooted, routines were changed and the whole world stood still for a little while. This is a perfect way to celebrate coming out of the dark,” says Helen. “I think it’s an incredible opportunity for the community to come together. A lot of people are telling us they can’t wait to see year’s illuminations and feel a sense of normality for Durham again. It’s the perfect opportunity to be with family and friends, to walk the streets whatever the weather and enjoy the beautiful architecture. I believe it’s a real symbolic moment as we’re travelling into the light from very dark times,” she adds. Lumiere is the UK’s leading light festival,

that has been brought to life by Artichoke, creators of extraordinary art in unusual places. Founded in 2006 by Helen Marriage and Nicky Webb, Artichoke aims to work with artists to create unique, large-scale experiences that appeal to the widest possible audience in public spaces, not in theatres, galleries or dedicated art spaces, but with the idea that the public can encounter amazing work by amazing artists rather than having to know about them in advance and buy tickets at a cost. “Everything we do is free to the public, is always done on a large scale and really tries to make a difference in people’s daily lives. I was always interested in the difference between the audience from those who would pay for tickets and know in advance what they were or going to see and those who could just turn up to something for free and enjoy the art for what it is and not for what it’s known for. “That’s the idea with Lumiere, I was always interested in transforming a city like it was an art gallery or a theatre so the streets become a stage and everyone could feel welcome,” explains Helen. Expressing talent and bringing people together is what Lumiere is all about. From small artists, to big names, this inclusive

NOV/DEC21

COMING OUT OF THE DARK event showcases work from creatives from all walks of life. “We’re doing a lot more work with local community artists, we ran our BRILLIANT scheme which is under the heading ‘Could you be brilliant?’ where anyone who was interested in making a piece of work could enter the competition. We’ve chosen five artists from that competition to showcase in this year’s programme. We’re also doing an amazing amount of work across the county with school kids and educational establishments to extend the opportunity to make something for Lumiere to as many people as we can. While it has this really amazing international group of artists who are making work, we also balance that with a lot of opportunities for local people too. “Because we’re working on such a big scale, the artists we work with get to do things that they never normally would think of. If you’re only ever working in a white box studio or a black box theatre or something, you have a certain number of seats with a stage of a certain size, but with us, they can be wildly creative and can completely think outside of the box,” Helen explains. Festival after festival, thousands of people flock to Durham to see the magical lights, but what can we expect from this year? “We don’t really ever focus on themes, but this year sees the new development where for the first time, we’ve got installations outside of the city centre. We’ve been lucky enough to receive some extra funding to programme in the county, so we’re doing six big scaled pieces in places like Seaham and Peterlee, we’ve ventured out a little into the countryside and we’re at Raby Castle amongst other places. The festival has expanded its footprint which is great for those who don’t want to come into the city centre, but still want a sense of what’s going on. “There’s going to be some truly amazing art for people to admire, including a variety of pieces that you can participate with on the night. We’re doing this fabulous piece with Visit County Durham which is tracking people’s hopes for the future. In the programme you’ll find the hashtag #LumiereHopes, which you can use on social media to input your hope, and both online and in real life the tree will grow and each of the branches will be filled with numerous hopes and dreams. This is just a simple thing you can do on your phone that will make a huge impact on what this piece will look like. There’s tons of work like that, there’s also a big musical piece, which you get to play if you’re there and it all illuminates beautifully - we’re trying to create real opportunities for people to feel like they’re part of it as well as admiring the pieces that other people have made,” Helen

expresses excitedly. As well as enjoying the mesmerising artwork and dazzling lights, visitors can enjoy a bite to eat from the new temporary food court located along the riverside walkway as well as stopping for a mid-walk coffee break or snack at one of the many food stalls that will be dotted around the city centre. Foodies can also feast at some of the city centre’s beloved restaurants due to some traders extending their hours and opening their doors to people throughout the whole period. Everyone wins! It’s only natural that some may still be a little wary about venturing out into big crowds and with over 150,000 people expected to attend, Artichoke have worked tirelessly to put safety protocols in place. “The beauty of not being a venue means we’re one step ahead for once,” laughs Helen. “We’re working closely with the council and the other agencies to put a lot of provisions in place to make sure that the event and the people attending are as safe as possible. The amazing thing about Lumiere is it’s free to attend and it’s completely outdoors, you don’t have to go into the cathedral, you don’t have to go into a building, you’re as safe as you are going about your normal daily lives,” she explains. For us, it’s a magical evening filled with pure joy, beautiful scenes and memory-making moments. For Helen, the Artichoke team, the artists and everyone else involved, it’s taken a lot of hard work. “It takes about 18 months of planning for it all to come together. We start with the artists and we talk to them about it. It’s been a bit different this year as no one has really been able to travel so there’s been a lot of Zoom meetings and Google Earth street hunting,” laughs Helen. “No one can imagine the amount of work, not only from us working on it full-time here at Artichoke but everyone else including the likes of the county council, fire, police, ambulance, planners, the university, the cathedral, all of the emergency planning that goes on around the event, crowd control, traffic management and all of the people who out of kindness allow us to use their buildings. So that might be the church or a shop and we couldn’t do it if these people didn’t allow us to, so we work completely in partnership with everybody locally to make this amazing thing happen. I think it’s probably going to be one of the biggest free events that has taken place since the Covid pandemic, so it’s really a big responsibility on us to ensure that everybody benefits as much as possible,” Helen adds. In a time where everyone is desperate to add some positivity and magical moments into their life, the upcoming Lumiere Festival is promising to do just that.

FAQ’s How do I attend? As always this incredible event is absolutely free. Many of the installations are accessible without a ticket at all times. However, the controlled City centre area of Lumiere will be ticketed for the entirety of the festival. Free tickets can be booked via lumiere-festival.com. What about the county programme? The county programme is unticketed for you to enjoy at your own leisure except for Solitude at Finchale Priory. This artwork is not accessible by car so bus tickets will be available to book online via lumiere-festival.com. How do I get there? Durham City Centre can be accessed via local transport links and we recommend planning in advance for parking. All county programmes except for Finchale Priory can be accessed at your own leisure, but please see site facilities for access and parking prior to attending.

For Finchale Priory, your special ticket comes with a bus ticket, you can’t visit here on your own due to the narrow access road. Do I need to show a Covid pass? No. Lumiere is an outdoor event. How can I support? Every penny that makes Lumiere Durham happen is raised by Artichoke, a registered charity that relies on the generosity of businesses, charitable trusts and donations from members of the public. By supporting you can help to transform the streets of the city, bring some of the world’s leading artists to the North East of England, and give people of all ages the chance to take part in extraordinary community and education projects. CELEBRITY INTERVIEW

Never look back Ian Botham is clearly a man who thrives on being busy. Not content with retiring following an illustrious cricket career, he’s now a cricket commentator, member of the House of Lords, is a dedicated fundraiser and owns a wine company. That’s not to mention the fishing, shooting and golf that he enjoys, his new role as UK trade ambassador to Australia, or the small matter of being a doting grandfather of eight. He recently found a small window to sit down for a coffee and a chat with Claudia Robinson…

When I arrive at Lord Botham’s house he is just finishing up a call with a journalist from a game sports title that he’s guest editing - another credential to add to his long list. His lovely wife, Kathy, takes me into their sitting room and we enjoy a cup of coffee as I find out about their plans for the following week: a trip to Wales to visit one of the grandchildren, a fishing trip and some early Christmas shopping (Ian won’t be here for Christmas as he’s preparing for

22 luxe-magazine.co.uk

a five-month work-trip to Australia). When Ian joins us, he’s moving slightly gingerly which prompts me to ask if he’s picked up an injury. It transpires that he spent 2018 and 2019 on and off crutches, culminating in two hip replacements and a modified spinal fusion following a similar operation in the 1980s. Ian jokes: “There won’t be any more ambitious charity walks for me. My surgeon said if I considered any more long distance walks he’d put the old hips back in! My knee isn’t behaving like it should now either and I’m avoiding any

more anaesthetic for a while.” Ian is heavily involved in charity work, a part of his life that he’s keen to talk about. He launched The Beefy Foundation in 2012, before that he primarily fundraised for Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research (now Blood Cancer UK), with the occasional appearance for other charities. The formation of the foundation allowed him to include other charities such as Battens Disease, Brain Tumour Research and Support in Yorkshire, Juvenile Diabetes, and Switchback, which helps reform 18 to 30 year old male offenders when they leave prison. The foundation has raised millions of pounds through high profile events including golf competitions and charity walks in Australia, Sri Lanka and South Africa, and from Land’s End to John o’ Groats in the UK. While the foundation hasn’t been able to run any big fundraising events like the walks over the last couple of years, there have been some virtual events and this year, to market the 40th anniversary of the 1981 Ashes series the foundation is also supporting Prostate Cancer UK in honour of Ian’s great friend and teammate, Bob Willis. Ian says: “I get a lot of satisfaction from the foundation. Everyone involved does. When you can help change people’s lives for the better, of course it’s rewarding. We know we can help make a difference, but we can’t >>

CELEBRITY INTERVIEW

CELEBRITY INTERVIEW old Arthur spends hours in the Polaris Sport with me, driving around the local fields and lanes spotting tractors, diggers, pheasants, grouse and hares. And Imani, our old granddaughter, plays for her university’s hockey team. Sport is very much in the genes!” Regan also shares his grandfather’s intrigue and passion for wine and the two of them work closely together on Ian’s business, Botham Wines. “I’ve been involved in wine for a long time,” explains Ian. “I originally set up BMW with great friends Bob Willis and Geoff Merrill. Geoff is one of the great winemakers, from Adelaide, and I’ve enjoyed watching and learning about wine from him. We enjoyed great success and I later went on to develop my own range and Regan will continue to be a big part of that. He’s already done his first wine exams and is now itching to get back out to the southern hemisphere to study for his second lot of exams. His expertise will be more scientific, understanding the rotation of crops, the soils and so on, while my input is more hands-on. It’s very exciting, I enjoy the blending side of it immensely. It’s been in my blood forever and to be honest I should have done it ten years earlier. We also make gin and have just launched our gin-filled cricket ball baubles for Christmas.” On the subject of Christmas, Ian tells me more about his plans for a trip to Australia and New Zealand that will mean he’s away for the festive season. It will be a productive time for him, however, as he’ll be able to wear most of his hats during the five month visit. He’ll be commentating on The Ashes for the Seven Network, the country’s equivalent to the BBC, he’ll be embarking on his first duties as UK Trade Ambassador to Australia and will be doing some all-important wine research and networking too. “It will involve a lot of work but Kath is planning to head out to visit in the New

always save them, which can be quite tough. You get to know the kids. It’s great for us to be able to raise funds for these charities but equally important is the awareness we raise for them.” Despite being born in Cheshire and playing most of his county cricket for Somerset, Ian says the north is where his heart is. When his father left the Navy the family moved to the south but as soon as he got the chance, when he was 17, Ian moved back up north. “I met Kath when I was 19 and my life has been up here ever since. We had our children here, my grandchildren are here. It’s very much home.” Family is everything to Ian, that’s easy to see because his face lights up when he talks about his grandchildren. He explains how his career kept him away from home for long periods of time when his children were growing up, but he’s certainly making up for it now. “It’s enormously important being a grandparent. If you want to get on in life and reach the pinnacle of your profession, whatever that may be, you have to make sacrifices but the people that suffer the most are the ones nearest to you. When I first started touring with England in the 70s, we were away for anything up to five months and we were discouraged from taking our wives with us, or from them visiting. So you got used to that fact. That was my job.” “In Australia you’d have to book a call home on the switchboard in the hotel. When my first daughter, Sarah, was born, there was this thing called the drum which is how they used to send photos in those days, so I

Year, I’m looking forward to catching up with some people I haven’t seen for a long time and no doubt the fishing rod will also come out at some point!” Cricket is still very much a part of Ian’s life. As well as the commentary work, he took over as Chairman of Durham County Cricket Club in 2017 and says it’s been a terrific ride. “Over the last four years we’ve gone from being millions in debt to probably one of the more secure county sides. It’s been an interesting time, not helped by Covid, but we’re now in a very healthy position and I’m really enjoying it. I don’t interfere with the cricket, I leave that to the coaches. I get asked my opinion and I am enjoying watching the guys grow. I love the way the team has developed, to the point where we got to a final last season. They got caught in the headlights a little bit, it was the first time playing at this standard for a lot of them, but we’ll be back next year and I think we’ll win something. We’re really good now and we’re getting better and better. We lost some really good players but almost all of them have come back - now they’re proud to play for Durham.” With so many hats, it begs the question, does Lord Botham have a favourite? Ian Botham, the best all-rounder with 5,200 test runs and 383 wickets? Ian Botham the wine connoisseur? Ian Botham, the world’s best grandfather? His answer is simple. There is no favourite, he has embraced every opportunity he has had. “I never look backwards,” he says. “Everyone has their own saying or motivation and mine is very simple. It’s that you ride the torpedo to the end of the tube. Meaning that once you’re on, you’re going that way and not looking backwards. You will make mistakes, but you learn from them and keep going forward. That’s how I play sports, and that’s how I do everything to be honest.”

didn’t even see photos of her until two or three days after she was born. So you feel like you’re probably the world’s worst father, but I would like to think I’m now the world’s best grandad.” It comes as little surprise that many of Ian’s eight grandchildren have inherited his competitive streak. “James plays rugby for Cardiff and Wales, and is a scratch golfer; Regan is also a keen golfer playing off two, while Kieran and Dominick, are both particularly good at rugby. My younger grandsons, Benji and Harley also love their rugby and golf while two-and-a-half year

FASHION FIX

Saint-sational, sustainable fashion Earlier this year, up and coming North East designer, Isabella Dryden, launched her luxury fashion brand, Saint Belle. No mean feat, even in normal times, but creating that first collection during a pandemic brought huge challenges. Now, as Isabella launches her next collection, she reflects on how different the experience has been, second time around...

“I massively missed interaction when I was developing my first collection at the start of this year,” Isabella tells me. “So this one was an absolute joy to work on because I was able to invite my friends around to look at drawings, ask them to feel fabrics, bounce ideas off them and suck up their feedback. As a result I’ve definitely created a much more rounded collection.” Another benefit of having one collection already under her belt was that Isabella felt slightly less pressure because her idea, values and the drive behind her brand was already out there. People knew that Saint Belle is a women-led, sustainable, beautiful fashion label. “It was important for me to build on the sustainability angle so this new collection is entirely organic,” continues Isabella. “It took me a really long time to source the organic fibres but I’m delighted to be working with 60 women in Bangalore who produce ethically sourced cotton.” As you’ll see over the next few pages

NOV/DEC21

featuring Isabella’s stunning new collection, she has enjoyed featuring print this time. “I loved receiving feedback from my customers about my first collection and spent some time on the shop floor in Fenwick, which proved invaluable. Some ladies told me that while they loved the designs and style of Saint Belle, they preferred to wear prints so I wanted to cater for their tastes too.” “I adore prints and block printing. My house is covered in William Morris. After endless research I found another team of women in Jaipur who did block printing. I was completely mesmerised by their work, it’s one of the most interesting processes ever. You’re totally dictated to by the process as you’re using natural dye. Introducing the prints to my collection gives my ladies more choice so this time each look features one in a natural colour and another with multiple colours with a silk blend.” Isabella explains that this is a big step forward for an independent brand which is still in its infancy. “The fabric makes a

brand. Labels get known for the fabrics they use. What I love is that we’re using one fabric, organic cotton, but are able to use different artisanal techniques and different couture processes - hand carved prints on hand loomed fabric. It’s expensive to create this collection, but we’re a sustainable, luxury cotton clothing brand and that’s what matters. I’m really proud of that.” While the fabrics are sourced from India, Isabella’s garments are cut and created in the North East. “The beauty of this,” says Isabella, “aside from creating jobs here, is that we can change things quickly, based on feedback. It’s a real, and rare, blessing to be able to react so quickly to demand in this industry.” The new collection also nods to Isabella’s first collection, to maintain the Saint Belle identity. “People loved the shell buttons I’d previously used so thost have become a lovely signature detail which I’ve used lots more this time, and with bigger buttons too. One thing I did want to build on was the length of my dresses. It’s definitely been

the year of the midi length dress and they’re going to stick around for a long while yet. Now is the right time to pair these with winter boots for autumn and winter.” Isabella describes her new collection as a pick and mix, where all the colours fit beautifully together as a capsule wardrobe. “To maintain the sustainability theme, all the colours I’ve used in this collection fit together perfectly. No item features the same colour but they all complement each other with different woven and floral prints.” “The focus has been on making it really easy to dress casually, but elegantly at the same time. That’s the way I love to dress. So I’ll match a floral dress with boots and a coat to take the dogs for a walk, and that’s what my customers are like too. I love to envisage what women will do while they’re wearing my items. There’s a lovely top that works perfectly with jeans, so they might sit in the garden with a glass of wine. It’s not just fashion, it’s their lifestyle and that’s built into the pieces.” saintbelle.co.uk

PRE-LOVED FASHION

The virtues of vintage Helen Emberton’s previous life saw her working on awards ceremonies for MTV in Lisbon and travelling the world as fashion editor for George at ASDA, but in her words, the little girl from Sunderland sometimes felt out of place. Now she lives back in the North East, running a successful business repurposing vintage clothing and accessories, and as she tells Claudia Robinson, she couldn’t be happier…

Helen and her husband, James, returned to the region to be closer to her family as they welcomed their first precious bundle, Martha, into the world. After all the jet-setting in her previous roles, Helen was enjoying being a mum whilst doing a spot of freelance marketing. When their second daughter, Esther, came along, life got much tougher as their newest addition developed meningitis at the age of six weeks and they were in and out of hospital for the next year. Work went on the back burner for Helen. As life started to return to normal, and never one to sit still for long, Helen decided to launch a fashion website that was accessible to all women. “I’ve always loved fashion,” she beams. “Particularly vintage fashion. I wore vintage on my wedding day. The dress I wore when working at the MTV Awards, on intern wages, was one I bought from an antique shop and I still have it. That’s the beauty of vintage items, they last a lifetime. I could see the importance of people embracing second hand clothing and making more considered purchases.” Helen set about creating an online shop accessible to anyone with any budget, and Found & Curated was born. “So you could spend lots on a Burberry scarf or a small amount on a beautiful Topshop blouse. The website is all about stand-out pieces that are special and wearable, fitting the daily needs of a woman. From dungarees and vintage denim for school runs to bridal gowns.” Despite Covid’s best attempts to stop fledgling businesses in their tracks, the fact that Helen’s concept was solely online meant that it flourished. She started running virtual markets and soon found herself with customers all over the world including Canada and Japan. “It was amazing,” continues Helen. “I built the website myself in a couple of weeks. I’d put the children to bed and then start working. I’m really proud of it.” The business model grew too. “As I started sourcing more pieces I realised a lot of second hand clothing can be damaged. It was a real shame to receive a beautiful garment or quilt, that wasn’t quite perfect. I didn’t want these items

34 luxe-magazine.co.uk

to go to landfill, and that’s the ethos of my brand. So we started reworking and upcycling pieces.” Antique linens became blouses, quilts were transformed into gorgeous jackets and gilets. Old denim jeans were repurposed as cushion covers. Helen’s mum is a talented seamstress so it’s become very much a family affair. “Vintage is so special,” says Helen, “and it comes hand in hand with sustainability. I have clothes in my wardrobe that I know I’ll keep for several years. And that’s what worries me about high street fashion. You can feel really excited about a new top or dress, but it’s important to ask yourself how often you’ll really wear that item. There is so much clothing and fabric out there and some really unique and magical ways in which to wear them. That’s the great thing about vintage - no one else will have what you have, so you will feel extra special wearing it.” As Helen’s business continues to thrive, it begs the question whether she has plans to diversify or expand? “I’ll definitely remain digital only,” she says. “Opening a physical store isn’t my plan, but I would like to build a second hand brand that is accessible to all women and is their go-to, so rather than searching for a high street brand, they search for us. Just recently I’ve started to include pre-loved items which are from 2000 onwards, while vintage items are from before the noughties.” “Not everyone wants a Laura Ashley item, they might want a more recent garment from Mango or Topshop, so if I can offer that second hand that’s one less item going into landfill. So that’s the next step and I want to expand that. I’m also considering setting up a kids’ section. The rate that they grow, they go through clothes so quickly. And my husband keeps saying we should offer men’s clothing too, so in the longer term it looks like we’ll pretty much have a second hand online department store, and I can’t wait!” foundandcuratedvintage.co.uk

MODERN STYLE

TREND WATCH with Kate Rose, founder of lifestyle brand, Tutti & Co The lead up to Christmas is the best time of the year for me. Winter fashion, roaring fires, candlelight and delicious festive suppers… Eating... I find that the preparation for Christmas and the lead-up is more exciting than the actual day itself. This year I plan to keep it simple but stylish, with effortless decorations which can be styled throughout the year...

Chocolate and Nut Italian Christmas cake. I love a traditional Christmas cake but the rest of the family aren’t as keen so this year I’m making a tasty alternative. The cake does not need to be made months in advance, and it will keep for two weeks in the fridge. So perfect to make the week before Christmas, enjoy a slice with a glass of fizz or serve warm with a boozy cream as a tasty pudding. Ingredients 8 oz (225 g) dark chocolate (minimum 70-75% cocoa solids), broken up into small pieces 5 large eggs, separated 1 large orange, scrubbed under warm water and the peel (without the pith) removed with a potato peeler and very finely chopped 1 oz (25 g) icing sugar, for dusting 1 oz (25 g) unsalted butter, melted and slightly cooled, plus a little extra for the tin 2 rounded tablespoons fine breadcrumbs, for the tin 8 oz (225 g) whole blanched hazelnuts 8 oz (225 g) walnut pieces 5 drops vanilla extract 21/2 fl oz (65 ml) brandy 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 7 oz (200 g) golden caster sugar Method Begin by buttering the cake tin generously, then sprinkle the inside with the breadcrumbs, shaking off any excess. Put the hazelnuts and walnut pieces in a food processor, then break the chocolate into small pieces and add it to the nuts. Pulse the machine on and off until the mixture is of a grainy consistency, but not finely ground. If you don’t have a

food processor, you can chop the ingredients by hand using a sharp knife. Transfer the mixture to a large bowl and stir in the vanilla extract, brandy, cinnamon, melted butter and sugar, mixing thoroughly. Now gradually add the egg yolks, mixing them in very well, and, finally, add the orange peel. Next, whisk the egg whites to the stiff-peak stage but not so thick that they become dry. Gently fold the egg whites into the chocolate mixture with a large metal spoon, a few tablespoons at a time, cutting through the mixture with a high movement to incorporate plenty of air. When all the egg whites have been folded in, spoon the mixture into the prepared cake tin and bake in the oven on the centre shelf for about 1 hour to 1 hour 10 minutes at 180°C. Cover the cake loosely with baking parchment for the last 10 minutes if it’s becoming too brown. The cake is ready when a cocktail stick inserted in the middle comes out dry. Then leave it to rest in the tin for a couple of minutes, before turning out onto a wire rack to cool. Store in the fridge, wrapped in foil, and eat within 2 weeks. The cake will also freeze well, again wrapped in foil. deliaonline.com

Wearing…

Styling... Everyone who knows me well, knows just how much I love Christmas (particularly styling the house). It may come as no surprise that this year we have created our own capsule collection of paper Christmas decorations. In soft tones of grey, chocolate and ivory it is simple yet effective and what’s more appealing is that the decorations, made from recycled paper, fold flat for storage for the next year. I love to cluster the decorations together for maximum impact. They look striking on a fireplace or grouped together on a shelf. £6.00 -£20.00 tuttiandco.com

Exciting…

My fashion pick for the festive season is a midi dress from Whistles. It’s available in black or an autumnal burgundy hue, with topstitch detail that creates a flattering fitted silhouette. The perfect outfit for a festive wedding, teamed with heels and gold jewellery for that subtle statement. It looks effortlessly stylish dressed down with sneakers and a blazer for afternoon drinks or a business lunch. I will team it with heeled boots for an evening out, and I plan to have many this year! £159 whistles.com

We have a very exciting new venture coming for Tutti & Co in 2022. A creative space including concept store, boutique staycation retreat and creative event space. Watch this space!

RETRO STYLE Opt for eighties vibes...

With Christmas just around the corner, the excitement is ramping up for party season! Let’s face it we’ve pretty much had a year off from any real celebrations, so Christmas 2021 is set to be a corker. Appointments in the salons are scarce with everyone planning ahead to avoid disappointment in making sure they are going to look pretty fabulous over the festive season. Although we all like to look our best at all times, there’s just something about Christmas that makes everyone pull out all the stops to look extra special, and why not - it feels so good! In December 2020 we were crowned Fellowship Hairdresser of the Year and were asked to mentor a team of four young people, ‘The FAME Team’ which has kept us really busy throughout 2021. When the world started to reopen in April we got to work straight away organising hair shoots,

seminars and shows - it’s literally been non-stop! This gorgeous image is from our most recent collection taking inspiration from 80s retro style, with Tom Ford vibes, to create a super sexy, glam feel. The hair is a balayage technique - using warm shimmering blondes that look stunning when waved out for both height and fullness and we just love it. Try accessorising your look with over-sized frames and neck scarfs to create the retro look. The excitement at H&Y is at fever pitch right now - with the 2021 British Hairdressing Awards looming at the end of November. With five nominations including ‘British Hairdresser of the Year’ we all have our fingers crossed to bring back some silverware to the North East - call it an early Christmas present. From everyone at Hooker & Young we’d like to wish you a very merry Christmas and we’ll see you all in 2022. Michael x

LIFE AFFIRMING

SUNSHINE STATE OF MIND Christmas – a teetotaller’s survival guide

For non-drinkers December can be the cruellest month, with parties galore and practically every get together revolving around drink. Luxe life coach, Teresa Peters, has some tips to guide teetotallers through the festive season… According to Drinkaware almost two-thirds (61%) of drinkers in the UK claim they overindulge at Christmas. Having said that, almost 30% of 16–25-year-olds in the UK are shunning alcohol entirely. The research from BM Public Health found that more than 25% of young people classed themselves as non-drinkers. What does all this mean? Well, I’m feeling rather smug knowing that I’m part of this healthy trend. I’m in with the youngsters! They accept me and in fact my 20-year-old son and friends admire me for choosing not to drink. I find it’s usually the 40 to 60-year-olds who can’t get their head around why anyone would choose to go teetotal? Can you believe it’s the only life-threatening drug that we must justify not taking? As a 46-year-old north east girl I binge drank my way through university. I worked hard then partied harder in the London media scene of the 1990s - with expense accounts that could fill a bathtub of fine wine. My tolerance increased and so did my drinking. I spent years deliberating over the amount I drank but I ran successful businesses, had three happy children, a contented hubby and I could run half marathons. Surely, I didn’t have a problem! I made the decision to quit drinking altogether in lockdown, June 2020.

My motivators to quit the booze became obvious when I asked myself the following questions: Have I ever gone out at Christmas and not drank, apart from when I was pregnant? NO Have I ever had a healthy, free-from-hangover New Year’s Day? NO Would I choose to book a taxi rather than drive? Any day! Will I still be running the great north run in my 50s if I continue to drink like this? NO Am I feeling anxious each time I drink? YES Would I eat certain foods if it made me feel so ill? NO Am I drinking because everybody else is? YES Had I engaged more with drinking at Christmas than playing board games with my children? YES Had I been so hungover on Christmas morning that I had to drag myself out of bed and pretend I’m okay so that my kids could open their presents? YES

The last question brings a tear to my eye as I write this. So much time wasted. Yes, I overspent and risked my good health but I can build up my bank account and improve my health. However, we can’t reclaim time. Time is so precious, and I don’t want to waste another single second. When I coach leaders and business owners, the subject of time comes up for them repeatedly. We look at our hierarchy of values and identify what’s getting in the way. We feel overwhelmed as we juggle work and life. Although my coaching is evidence-based and scientific, we do a lot of internal work on behaviours and habits which enable long-term sustainable change to move my clients towards being the best versions of themselves. It was in fact these wonderful people who inspired me to walk the talk and not ‘give up drinking’, but ‘gain the gift of more time.’

42 luxe-magazine.co.uk

FOCUS ON WHAT YOU GAIN AND NOT WHAT YOU ARE GIVING UP Here are ten tips for all you fun-loving festive party-going non-drinkers, teetotallers, mums-to-be, those with an illness or the designated drivers: 1. Explain to your friends in advance what you’d like to drink if you’re in rounds and that you don’t want a fuss. Or say that you’ll be buying your own (we don’t get as thirsty as the drinkers so we don’t necessarily need to have the expense of rounds and we can save so much money and use this to buy more gifts). 2. If the girls drink prosecco, then get fizzy water or Appletiser in a flute (I often have a quiet word with the waiters and they sometimes make it special by adding a strawberry to my glass, complemented by a wink). 3. If I’m at a concert or festival I now drink pints like my student days – I ask for becks blue or another alcohol-free beer or lager in a pint glass with a splash of lemonade. It looks cool, it’s low calorie and I dance the night away. 4. That craving for a first sip of wine is 95% psychological – Did you know it actually takes six minutes for our bodies to feel the effects of alcohol so if someone sighs ‘Aah that’s better’ as they embrace their first mouthful, then consider that six minute fact with an inner smile! 5. After the first hour everyone forgets you’re not drinking. You’ll recall all your conversations, feel connected and notice who your true friends really are. 6. You may be perfectly happy not drinking an alcohol-free alternative. Don’t feel pressured and well done to you. 7. You will get used to it. Pubs and restaurants’ non-alcoholic drink sales are increasing every week. It’s becoming more and more normal to not drink. Waiters and bar staff will respect you and assume you’re driving. No need to explain. Although I still like to ask for my champagne flute or wine glass – more for the boomerang images that the girls take! 8. Go out and have a breather if it all gets too much – you have control. How amazing is that? And what’s better still is that you’re able to help the teenagers out if they need a lift home to safety – the chances of this happening with teens is high during the festive season. 9. Go home when you’re ready. I used to worry about this. I still dance and have a laugh but when I’m ready to leave I will. Remember that most drinkers are controlled by external influences on a night out – either waiting for taxis, lifts or waiting for others to finish off their drinks. A non-drinker can do as they please. You have choices. 10. Smile with your shoulders back and head held high. You are looking after your health, valuing your time and saving money to spend on your loved ones.

Christmas is a celebration of love, family, connection, and shared emotion. Never have I been more excited to share Christmas this year knowing that I’ll be 18 months booze free. I won’t write off days, I’ll be wholly present for my family and my liver is in good health. Good luck to you and know that you are not alone. And remember that if you choose to go teetotal or even decide to take the plunge and try just one night as driver, you’ll gain more time and be joining 25% of the youngsters! SELF CARE

Botanical beauty Natalie Dawson is the founder of Awesome Botanical. The Gateshead-based entrepreneur started her holistic skincare brand in 2020 and has been making waves in the beauty industry ever since. Nicole Wood gets the lowdown... Natalie Dawson founded Awesome Botanical in 2020 to help ease her own anxiety amidst a worldwide pandemic. Like many others, she was struggling when we were suddenly plunged into a lockdown and our lives were turned upside down. “When the pandemic hit, I struggled a lot with anxiety. The family business had naturally taken a decline due to retail being forced to close, so I decided to channel this overwhelming anxiety into creating cosmetics. “I started to study cosmetics and essential oils as this was something I used to help ease my own anxiety and I had a passion to create products that would help others ease their stresses and anxiety. Keeping the products as natural as possible was also extremely important to me,” Natalie explains. With no shops open, Natalie decided to treat her loved ones on their birthdays to her new found creations and they went down a treat. With incredible feedback from family paired with a friendly nudge, Natalie was given the boost of confidence she needed to turn her brilliant new hobby into a booming business. “Spurred on by my loved ones, I decided to take this further and research the legalities that go with selling cosmetics in the UK and in June 2020 my holistic skincare brand, Awesome Botanical, was born. We launched our first shop on Etsy and I have never looked back,” says Natalie. “Self care is at the forefront of everything we do. When I created each product I had self care in mind, finding ways that I could take some time for myself with a product which would make me feel good about myself,” Natalie tells me as she begins to delve deeper into the ethos of her business. “The aim is to revive, energise and ease away stresses which is why our products are made from essential oils. These natural ingredients are derived from plants and can be found in different areas such as the bark on the leaves, stems and petals. Some we use have been known to have beneficial properties, and while they can come with heaps of advantages and feel-good solutions, we don’t make any medical claims about our Awesome Botanical products,” she adds. Natalie pours in hard work, dedication and many hours of research to ensure her products work as efficiently as possible, whilst smelling sensational.

“Our hand balms are packed full of natural, skin-loving ingredients. They are an intense moisturiser in the form of a solid balm rather than a cream which means you save on wastage. Our Natural Foot Balm is also a very popular option if you have dry or cracked heels as the formula works to bring intense hydration to your feet. “For me, I have two favourite products which I use depending on how I would like to feel. The whipped soap range is an awesome alternative to a shower gel. Scented with a luxurious blend of pure essential oils, they are whipped to a fluffy and creamy texture, then piped into the jar. Their semi-solid velvet-like consistency makes them the perfect choice for a body wash. A little goes a very long way, which makes this a deluxe cleanser and an enjoyable experience that lasts for weeks. My personal favourite is Sweet Orange, it’s my go-to product when I wake up in the morning. It has a zesty fresh orange scent

that uplifts you for the day ahead. “When it comes to an indulgent evening, our range of eco-natural bath bombs go down a treat. My go-to when I need to feel relaxed and calm is the Sweet Dreams - Relaxation Bath Bomb. Lavender and Bergamot Essential Oils slowly fizz into the bath, filling the air with a serene aroma as tranquil floral, herbaceous, and earthy notes activate your body’s resting instinct,” Natalie explains as I begin to make a mental note of all the dreamy products I’ll be adding to my basket. Just as I regroup after dreaming of all the wonderful products I can’t wait to try, the excitement resurfaces as we move on to discuss her fabulous new Christmas range. The launch of these brand-new products has

everything you need for the ultimate pamper at home, with Christmas-themed bath bombs, bubbles and holistic skincare that will look after you from head to toe. All neatly gift wrapped in sustainable packaging, these gorgeous sets are perfect for eco-conscious consumers, beauty lovers and those who need a little self care encouragement. When it comes to owning a small business, there are many tasks at hand. For Natalie, that means taking on the day-to-day tasks of running a business as well as making all of the products by hand in Gateshead. “A day in the life of Awesome Botanical varies constantly. My morning is often spent checking what needs to be restocked, followed by putting a plan in place to make them. Next, it’s time to pack up orders and shoot off to the post office before checking on any PR requests. Then comes the part I love most… making the products. Running a small business single-handed means I cover so many roles, but I love it. I put a lot of love and care into our products, they’re

made in small batches with raw ingredients sourced from UK suppliers to ensure optimum freshness,” Natalie explains. Since launching, the company went from strength to strength with opportunities presenting themselves from all directions. In 2020, Natalie took up the amazing opportunity to sell her products at a four-day Christmas Pop Up Event in Fenwick. Soon followed her Natural Foot Balm being shortlisted by Top Santé for the 2021 Body Care Awards and success didn’t stop there. Awesome Botanical went on to win the Theo Paphitis Small Business Sunday resulting in a huge increase in following on social media and tons of extra orders. Watch this space. Hopes and plans to eventually open a shop combined studio, for customers to see the products being made whilst they shop, is on the agenda. But for now, all of the dreamy creations handmade by Natalie can be purchased via her website or you can catch her in Fenwick Newcastle from 2 December - 12 January. awesomebotanical.com

FOOD THOUGHTS

HOME COMFORTS with chef Chris Baber Foodie festivals, selecting seasonal squash and family get-togethers

MY WORLD >> All the travelling for M&S has come to an end. For now! We finished our tour of the country filming blackberries on a really sunny day in Kent. The whole M&S experience was amazing and hopefully we’ll get the opportunity to explore more parts of the country and work with seasonal food and producers again next year. I’ve just returned from a week in beautiful Belfast for the Balmoral Show. A massive agricultural event with tens of thousands of visitors every day. It was great to meet so many food producers and farmers and fun to watch some of the livestock competitions and sheep shearing. There was a fabulous family atmosphere. I was there to give cookery demonstrations for M&S and to talk about the different produce we use. It was really interesting to meet so many people from the agricultural world and to learn more about farming. I must have had about ten people try to sell me a combine harvester! A very different food event that I loved being a part of was the Big Feastival on Alex James’s farm in the Cotswolds. There were some amazing food vendors there, with live music on an evening, including Nile Rodgers, Sophie Ellis Bextor and All Saints. My job was to run the cookery school which involved six classes of 40 people each day, teaching them how to cook a really nice pan fried trout recipe. There was a brilliant mix of people taking part from children with their parents to hungover people who’d enjoyed the live music and festivities a bit too much the night before! It was so nice to be able to interact with people in person again. I also really enjoyed being able to catch up with my friends in the industry that I hadn’t seen for a long time. My good friend, DJ BBQ, also kept me going with his delicious pulled pork sandwiches. INSPIRED BY THE SEASONS >> This is an exciting time of year for food and ingredients. Summer and al fresco dining are a distant memory and we can now embrace the richer comfort foods that we all crave. You don’t mind the colder nights so much when you have a proper hearty meal to look forward to. It’s a time to celebrate the pumpkin and squash. They aren’t just for Halloween, despite what the kids say! Keep a look out for the Crown Prince squash which is my squash of choice for cooking with. It has a sweet, nutty flavour and a strong texture that doesn’t boil down to nothing like the ones you buy to carve. It’s a great ingredient to cook with because it’s so substantial and filling. FOODIE HAPPENINGS >> I was very excited to welcome my parents to London recently. It’s the first time for a couple of years they’ve been to see me in my adopted home, for obvious reasons. It’s great to show them the sights and give them a taste of the fun things I get to do down in London - a little bit different from

Pumpkin curry vegan Serves 4 As we look towards the festive season, sometimes we can feel a little like we’ve had a meat overload! Often the food we eat is lacking in spice too so break up the Christmas food theme with this delicious Pumpkin Curry for a meat-free meal that packs a punch.

Hexham! We enjoyed a delicious meal at The River Café during their stay. I’m also looking forward to taking part in the Love Cheese Live festival soon - the UK’s biggest cheese and food weekender, and

what’s not to love about a weekend full of cheese! There will be loads of amazing cheese suppliers from around the country including fabulous cheese producers from our region, of course.

Now that I’m not working from home as much, I need some quick and easy mid-week meal inspiration please! A. If you’re looking for super easy ideas, keep an eye out for an exciting announcement from me in the next issue of Luxe! For now though, here are a few tips. Batch cooking is always worth doing if you have some spare time at the weekend. Alternatively, get into the habit of cooking too much food. We all know how to make a good Spag Bol. Make a big batch on a Monday and then rather than just reheating it the next day, transform it into a chilli or tacos. Heat oil in a pan, add fresh onions and green peppers, along with cumin, smoked paprika or even just a fajita mix. Throw in the bolognese and warm it through. Add kidney beans if you like and serve in tacos or with rice. Similarly, with roast dinner, if you normally buy a small chicken, get a large one and stir fry the leftovers the next day with Chinese five spice and hoisin sauce, to serve with rice or bao buns. .

Ingredients 1 squash 2 onions finely chopped 2 cloves garlic grated 1 inch ginger grated 1 chilli seeds removed - finely chopped 1 tsp turmeric 1/2 tsp cinnamon 1/2 tsp chilli powder 2 tbs garam masala 1 tbs tomato purée 1 tin coconut milk 150ml water 1 tbs honey 2 handfuls spinach Fresh mint / coriander to serve 1 lemon or lime Basmati rice to serve Method Preheat the oven 200°C Peel the squash Cut half of it into 2cm chunks and finely chop the other half (you could blitz in a food processor or grate) Put the chunks of squash onto a tray, drizzle with oil. Season with salt and 1 tbs of the garam masala, roast for 30 minutes or until caramelised. Meanwhile heat 1 tbs oil in a saucepan or large frying pan, fry the onions with a good pinch of salt for 10 minutes until golden. Add the remaining squash, garlic, ginger and chilli, fry for 3 minutes then stir in the spices and tomato purée, cook for 1 minute. Add the coconut milk and water, cover, simmer for 15-20 minutes until thick then stir in the honey and juice of half a lemon or lime - adjust seasoning to taste. Stir in the roast squash and serve with rice.

FINE WINES

Discovering autumn and winter wines Daniel Jonberger is Food and Beverage Manager at Headlam Hall and when it comes to wine expertise, there are few sommeliers better-placed to advise us on the best wines to choose as we head into winter. Having worked in the industry for 28 years, in Michelin star establishments across Europe and the UK, he has built up a wealth of wine knowledge and visited vineyards around the world

To scout out wines for autumn and winter is always a journey well spent. The wines tend to be bolder and heavier as our palate turns towards richer dishes. It is in our human nature to change our eating patterns during the seasons. In the height of the summer, a fresh salad with some grilled chicken is more appealing than a Sunday roast. In autumn and winter we subconsciously change our intake to heavier dishes with more calories. We are ‘building a layer against the cold’. Since I am a native Swede, I know how important it is to get more out of the dishes during the really dark winters. It makes you feel good, and you don’t miss the daylight so much! So the palate changes. It is more in tune with dark flavours, spice and richer nuances. The beautiful rosé you drank during the summer evenings may now seem flat and uninspiring. Instead the bold reds are filling your glass. And this is what I find so welcoming, the changes in palate always result in new wine discoveries. So as we look forward to settling down in front of the fire, or getting together with friends and family in the build up to Christmas, I’m delighted to share some recommendations with you. The Chenin Blanc listed below is for me a perfect wine that sets the tone for an evening, or while you are cooking. To venture to Portugal and find a wine is always a nice adventure for me. The complexity of the wines from Portugal never cease to amaze me. The DAOU vineyard is a new Napa Valley favourite of mine. It is a young vineyard, but the quality is already staggering. Those wines will soon cost a fortune.

NOV/DEC21

Stellenrust, Chenin Blanc, Stellenbosch, South Africa, 2019 A traditional Bush wine and still nicely complex. Almost tropical on the nose with a hint of lime that follows towards the palate where it mixes with red apples and the unmistakable note of apricot. A perfect conversation starter. sainsburys.co.uk £8.50

Quinta Dos Roques, Colheita, Dao, Portugal, 2017 It has predominantly Touringa Nacional grapes in the bottle, but there is actually a phenomenal blend of five grapes. Dark ruby colour with an intense nose of blackcurrant, spice and a touch of vanilla.

A deep palate with more dark fruit, oak and the hint of spice at the end. A lingering and pleasant aftertaste with smooth tannins. oddbins.com £15

Pessimist, DAOU, Paso Robles, California, 2018 Then for those dark winter nights I would go for the Pessimist. It is a strange name for such a positive wine. It is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. It heralds from DAOU in the Napa Valley. A huge dose of soft vanilla, plum and roasted coffee on the nose. Almost floral on the palate at first, then soft, dark berries with soft oak and a hint of lavender. Such a glorious mouthful. The finish goes on forever and begs to be revisited. barriquefinewines.com £24.95 headlamhall.co.uk

FISH FANATICS

ON A ROLL Two exceptional chefs have enjoyed so much success since moving from the world of fine dining to that of sushi, that they’ve just opened their second restaurant in a prime Newcastle city location. Claudia Robinson went to find out why this Japanese delight is proving such a hit in the North East

Simon Whitehead and Kurt Toulson met while working as chefs at Jesmond’s Peace & Loaf. They both loved working in the fine dining industry but as Simon told me, and as many chefs will agree, it takes its toll. “I was pretty much finished with cooking, I was tired of it,” says Simon, whose excitement at their new business venture is very clear to see. “There are a lot of perks to working in fine dining. It’s good for any chef in terms of training and gaining valuable experience but the hours are gruelling and the pressure is high,” continues Simon. Simon believes that the well-publicised shortage of staff in hospitality isn’t to be blamed on Covid or Brexit. He told me that it’s because previous generations of chefs have been so dedicated to their work, for such a long time, and that our lifestyle demands are changing. “I missed a good five years of birthdays, nights out, weekends away. I don’t want anyone to feel sorry for me, I wanted to

46 luxe-magazine.co.uk

do it. It was my life, living and breathing food, as it was for so many other people in the industry. But now, after the pandemic, and so many people being forced to take a year out of working in kitchens, they have started living and breathing a whole new life. That’s why the hospitality industry is having such a hard time trying to find staff.” It was a while before the pandemic that Kurt and Simon were getting itchy feet. “We wanted to try something new and try to get a bit of a better work-life balance,” says Simon. Kurt suggested to Simon that they set up a sushi bar. They’re both big fans of the cuisine, Kurt had worked in Asian and Japanese restaurants before, and they’d identified a gap in the market. “Nowhere else was running a casual, relaxed place in which to just enjoy sushi,” says Simon. “There are other places that offer it in Newcastle, as part of a wider menu, but to get proper, good quality sushi, where the focus is on just that, you had to go to London, or certainly travel a good couple of hours.”

“We love sushi. It’s one of our favourite foods and obviously now we are making it day in, day out, Kurt and I can eat it whenever we want. Which is all the time! It’s a great food to work with because you can explore and experiment with different flavours, tweaking things ever so slightly, all the time, to offer our customers something new. Pre-packed sushi just doesn’t boast the punchy flavours that hand-rolled, freshly-made sushi does.” In the summer of 2018, Simon and Kurt decided to launch their new sushi concept at Stack in Newcastle. Simon came up with the playful name, Sushi Me Rollin’. “I used to work on yachts and I was scrolling

through my Instagram feed one day and there was an old post of me rolling a towel to the song, Ridin’ by Chamillionaire, that goes ‘You See Me Rollin’ - you know the one. It was a bit of a lightbulb moment!” The pair secured a unit at Stack but their new offering proved to be somewhat of a slow burner. Simon says: “With sushi there’s a strong element of trust that you have to establish with your clientele. If you’re selling raw fish it can take time to build that reputation. There was amazing footfall at Stack but we were struggling to get people in as most people there were coming for the drinks rather than the food. Then the pandemic happened.”

NOV/DEC21

FISH FANATICS

Up until then, Sushi Me Rollin’ hadn’t offered takeaway, so the team quickly pivoted the business and launched that service. It immediately opened up a new sector of the market that they hadn’t explored before. They did all the deliveries themselves, offering the service in different areas on different nights. “To begin with we were ticking over nicely, getting time to watch TV or play on the Xbox in our unit in Stack, in between making up orders and delivering them for lunch and dinner. One night we delivered sushi to a number of local influencers nd the following morning we got into work at 9.15am and already had 150 orders. The coverage and reaction was awesome. From then on we were constantly busy.” Simon and Kurt found that one of the areas they were most popular for deliveries was along the coast so their next step was to open a site there. When their lease came up at Stack, within a week with the support of friends, family and colleagues they had moved into their new premises at Whitley Bay. “Now the Grey Street site is our next big step,” says Simon. “Just over a year ago there was just two of us and now we have a team of 12 working between the two restaurants.”

NOV/DEC21

The Grey Street restaurant is small but perfectly formed, with comfy stool seating around high tables and a bar and kitchen area in full view so you can watch the delicious food and cocktails being created. There’s seating for 28 people inside and an additional 16 outside, weather permitting! The restaurant doesn’t take bookings, instead you can call in any time from midday to order a take-out lunch or a dine-in meal. “There’s such a strong no-show culture these days that we don’t want to take the risk of booking out tables for people not to turn up, meanwhile turning away walk-ins,” says Simon. “This system works well for us and we strongly believe that it’s worth queuing for a little while for something so delicious.” As business partners, Simon and Kurt perfectly complement each other. Simon likes to be front of house; he enjoys interacting with their customers while Kurt is much more at home prepping food and ensuring the kitchen works like a well-oiled machine. And is there a grand plan for the future? Of course there is. Simon says: “If you asked anyone who knows me they’d say my number one rule is I always have a plan. When we left Stack, I already had a plan. My approach is that there are never

problems, only solutions. Kurt’s ethos is exactly the same and our entire team is on board too, there’s a really positive vibe at Sushi Me Rollin’. “So our next plan is to start looking at offering deliveries again as we currently only offer click and collect. We’re also considering setting up a ‘grab and go’ shop in Newcastle and have been approached by various people to move the business forward, but we need to be careful not to dilute the brand as it’s important to us that everything is made fresh to order. “We’d also love to open in Leeds or Manchester next summer. There are so many possibilities for us, but for now our main focus is to make the two sites we already have, the best they can possibly be.” sushimerollin.co.uk

FESTIVE BAKING

Savouring the seasons WITH KAREN PHILLIPS

For many of us, the European Christmas markets were an annual pilgrimage with Glühwein and delicious Stollen warming both our hands and hearts. But perhaps this year you’re not quite ready to make that journey, so let’s bring a small part of that winter wonderland to our homes

Make the most of the darker nights by spending time in a cosy kitchen filled with the aromas of Christmas past. Batch-bake these Stollen breads - one to eat straight away and two for the freezer, just ready to be whipped out at a moment’s notice for unexpected guests over the festive period. Stollen is a rich, sweet German bread made with dried fruit and marzipan and, once baked, liberally dusted with icing sugar.

Traditionally, the first piece of Stollen was set aside to ensure that the family could afford Stollen the following year, whilst the last piece was saved to ensure the family had enough food for the year. Perhaps we should reinstate this tradition to ensure there’ll be food on the supermarket shelves and petrol in the pumps for 2022! This is rather a labour of love so please don’t try and make these in a rush, rather get the ingredients in and then wait for a rainy day when blissful aromas will fill your home.

Christmas Stollen Makes 3 large Stollen Total proving time: minimum 4 hours Baking time: 30-35 minutes Equipment: A small saucepan, a food mixer to cream the filling, 2 large baking sheets, a dough scraper or butter knife and a pastry brush. Ingredients Dough: 1kg strong white flour 10g (2tsp) dried yeast 500ml full-fat milk 200g unsalted butter 50g sugar 10g fine sea salt 4 large eggs Filling: 125g unsalted butter, softened 125g caster sugar 125g ground almonds 25g plain flour 2 eggs 180g sultanas 200g Italian mixed peel 100g natural glacé cherries, halved 1 tsp ground cardamom 75g toasted, flaked almonds 400g white marzipan Glaze: 100g unsalted butter 2 tbs rum/brandy Icing sugar to dust Method Make the bread dough: Place all the flour in a very large mixing bowl, reserving 2 tbsp of flour to mix with the fruit later. Stir the salt into the flour. Heat the milk until warm, then add the butter and sugar and stir until melted. Allow to cool before stirring in the dried yeast until dissolved. Make a well in the centre of the flour and pour in the milk/butter/yeast mix as well as the 4 beaten eggs. Using a dough scraper, or a knife, bring the mixture roughly together to form a shaggy mass. Cover the bowl with a damp cloth/cling film and sit down with a cup of tea for 20 minutes. The dough will have had time to absorb some of the liquid and kneading will be a lot easier and quicker. Bring the mixture together into one large mass and plonk onto a clean work surface. Set a timer for ten minutes and start to knead: press the dough out on the work surface in a long rectangle and then bring the back edge of the dough up and back over onto the front edge incorporating as much air as

48 luxe-magazine.co.uk

possible. Turn the dough 90 degrees and then flatten out away from you and do the same again. Yeast is a living entity so the more oxygen we give it the more it will flourish and result in an airier loaf. The quicker you do this, the easier and less sticky the dough will become – just use the heel of your hand and gently press outwards. Use your dough scraper to clear off any sticky bits on the work surface. After ten minutes, you should have a coherent mass of dough that can be shaped into a ball. Put a small amount of flour onto the work surface and flatten the dough into a circle then pull each edge in turn, going clockwise, and bringing up to the centre of the ball and pressing firmly in. You’ll end up with a tight, smooth looking ball of dough. Pop it back into your bowl, cover again and leave to rise in a warm kitchen for an hour (you can leave it longer).

Leave the cream on the side. Mix the sultanas, peel, glacé cherries and nuts together in a separate bowl and stir in the reserved flour to stop the fruit sticking together when it’s added to the dough. Then stir in the ground cardamom.

Make the filling: Cream the butter and sugar together until pale and fluffy, then mix in the ground almonds and flour and finally mix in the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each one so the mixture doesn’t curdle. The mix should look like cake mix. You can stir in a couple of tablespoons of rum or brandy if you like.

Creating the Stollen: Lightly flour your work surface again and tip out the dough. Divide into three roughly equal pieces. Working with each piece of dough in turn, and using lightly floured hands, flatten into a horizontal rectangle 20 x 15cm and approximately 1cm thick; spread with 1/3 of the almond cream and chop 1/3 of the

Adding the fruit to the dough: Once the dough has risen, lightly flour your work surface and plonk your dough out of the bowl. Flatten it gently into a rough square shape and then spread the mixed fruit and nut filling over the dough. Fold the dough over a few times to incorporate the fruit - this may take five minutes and the fruit will try to escape, but just keep popping them back in the dough and folding again. Form into a ball again like we did last time and pop back into the bowl. Cover and leave to rise again for half an hour.

marzipan into small pieces over the top. Fold one of the long sides of the rectangle (the bottom third of the dough) into the centre over the filling, then fold the top third down over the filling to make a three-layer dough sandwich. Transfer to a greased baking tray and repeat with the other two pieces. Cover all three Stollen with a dry tea towel and leave to rise in a warm kitchen until doubled in size (around two hours). Bake the Stollen and make the topping: Preheat the oven to 170°C. Bake for 30-35 minutes until lightly golden. Just before the Stollen come out of the oven prepare the glaze by melting the butter in a small pan and stirring in the rum/brandy. Remove the baked Stollen from the oven and, using a pastry brush, immediately brush all over the baked surfaces with the glaze until they’re shiny. Immediately dust heavily with icing sugar and cool on a wire rack. Remember, it is the heavy glaze that keeps this bread good to eat for five days, if kept in a good quality tin, so don’t skimp on the final part. If you want to freeze the Stollen then wrap in foil and pop in a large zip-lock bag. Defrost at room temperature. Enjoy!

COASTAL DINING

SEAFOOD, SPLENDOUR AND STROLLS

Nicole Wood settles in for an indulgent dinner under the iconic dome at Whitley Bay’s Trencher’s, Spanish City

A short 40-minute drive from Luxe HQ, myself and my dinner date pull up at Whitley Bay’s seafront. A little early for our reservation, we take a stroll along the beach, taking in the coastal views and admiring the bravery of the wild sea swimmers heading into the ocean on a cold September evening. A short while later, we head into the iconic Spanish City building where we are greeted by the ever-so-friendly waitress who sits us down with a selection of menus to choose from. The elegant ambience of the room is made up of large windows, high ceilings,

NOV/DEC21

traditional features and a modern, contemporary decor, all of which is complemented by the talented pianist, adding a hint of class and sophistication to the dining experience. When it comes to drinks, the menu is packed with fine wines, beers, spirits and a selection of soft drinks to choose from. There’s something for everyone when it comes to sipping in style at Trencher’s this winter. Our pre-dinner drinks arrive in the form of an Earl Grey Tea (£2.20) and a cold refreshing glass of water - nothing too flashy, but perfect for those thirst quenching moments. As our starters are served, we move onto

wine, and it’s a bottle of the Pulpo Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough, New Zealand (£27.95) that seals the deal for us – light, zippy and a wonderful sip to accompany with any seafood dish. I kick things off with the Calamari (£8.50), a delicious portion of crispy soy and chilli squid served with a red onion and coriander salad on a bed of tangy chilli jam. A beautiful dish packed with a variety of textures and flavours. My dinner date opts for the wholetail Whitby scampi (£6.95) served with a generous portion of tartare sauce, baby leaf salad and a perfectly placed lemon wedge. So simple - yet so tasty. I admire my other half’s starter option so much that I choose it for my main event. The big plate of Whitby scampi (£12.95) comes with chips, lemon and tartare sauce. The melt-in-the-mouth scampi is succulent, juicy and coated in a perfectly crunchy breadcrumb batter. The chips? We both agree they’re some of the best around. Chunky, fluffy and oh-so Northern, we can’t get enough. My seafood-loving companion goes for the traditional large Cod (£15.25) perfectly coated in a golden bubbly batter, no excess oil in sight. Expertly cooked and packed full of flavour, the fork glides through the fish - one bite and you’re in heaven. Served with a helping of the chips we’ve fallen in love with and a delicious tartare sauce. We add to the flavours with an extra side order of curry - ideal for dunking.

We sweeten the deal with our fair share of chocolate. My sweet tooth makes an appearance and I go for the huge portion of chocolate fudge cake (£5.95) served with vanilla ice cream and it’s the warm chocolate brownie (£5.95) also served with vanilla ice cream for my other half. The chocolate fudge

cake is rich in flavour, perfectly sweetened when paired with a spoonful of vanilla ice cream, while the warm chocolate brownie is gooey in texture and sweet in taste - just as it should be. We finish the evening working off our spectacular three courses with yet another stroll along the seafront, agreeing we’ll be back to visit this festive season. spanishcity.co.uk/trenchers-fish-chips

Christmas pupcakes

Ingredients >> 2 ripe bananas 150g peanut butter (make sure it does NOT contain Xylitol - it’s poisonous for dogs. It’s also best to use one with no added salt) 2 medium eggs 75g honey 100g wholemeal flour 75g rolled oats 1 tsp baking powder (optional) 125ml water

Serves 12

Method >> Preheat your oven to 180C/160C fan or 3/4 gas mark. Lay out 12 cupcake cases on a baking tray ready to use. Peel your bananas, add to a bowl and mash up. Next, add in the peanut butter, eggs, and honey and mix together till combined. Add in the flour, oats and baking powder and mix till combined. The texture will become quite thick. Gradually add in the water a little at a time until all mixed in. Spread the mixture evenly between the 12 cases, and bake in the oven for around 15-20 minutes until browned on top. Once cooled, spread over a teaspoon of cream cheese per Pupcake, and add on a dog biscuit. ‘Tis the season for feeling festive, we recommend choosing a dog biscuit in the shape of festive characters such as a Christmas tree, Santa Claus, or a snowman. Remove pupcakes from their cases and let your pooch enjoy! Recipe via janespatisserie.com

FONDEST DOGGY MEMORY >> We spent a week hunkering down in a cosy log cabin in the Lake District last November. Days spent exploring and nights cosying up by the roaring log fire, I loved it. The best part? We’re doing it again this year. PUPPY A-LISTER? >> Cheeky, loyal and totally loveable - it’s the adorable Dug from the film Up. CITY TRIP

LIVING LOCAL:

Newcastle Upon Tyne Stunning architecture, bustling nightlife and smiling faces make Newcastle Upon Tyne one of the most charming cities in the UK. Johnathan Ramsay takes us for a Luxe day out in his adopted hometown City living often gets a bad reputation, conjuring up images of the ‘rat-race’ and an overwhelming hustle and bustle that leaves you indefinitely stressed. So you can imagine how worried I was when my parents told me that we were moving from the serenity of the Scottish Borders to a larger than life English city. I was only 11 and assumed this Newcastle place would be akin to the smoky depictions of London that I’d seen in films. I was terrified! But, after moving to Newcastle, I quickly realised that this place wasn’t anything like the nightmarish metropolis that I had imagined. In fact, it was lovely and so were the people. I’ve officially been a city-slicker for 15 years now and I’m convinced that Newcastle is one of the most charming cities in the world. Here, it seems to operate at a different pace to it’s larger southerly counterparts. We take things a little slower, we take the time to smile at passers-by and we certainly take the time to enjoy ourselves! But there’s much more to Newcastle than its world famous nightlife, and that’s what I want to highlight here, as I take you for a Luxe day out in Geordie land.

Where to eat >> Grainger Market Situated right in the heart of the city, Grainger Market is a historic indoor market that’s been home to some of the

54 luxe-magazine.co.uk

city’s best independent shops and restaurants since it opened in 1835. Of course a lot has changed since then, but you still feel like you’re stepping back into a simpler time when you’re in the Grainger Market. It has this rustic charm. You’ll find lots of exciting places to grab a quick bite here from vendors that represent some of the world’s most exciting street food! shop.graingerdelivery.com

House Of Tides We’re staying on the iconic Quayside, this time to indulge in some Michelin Star dining at House Of Tides. Set within a beautifully restored Grade I listed 16th Century town house, this award-winning restaurant is home to elegant dishes with an emphasis on natural and seasonal flavours. It’s modern British food at its very best and an absolute must try when you’re in Newcastle. houseoftides.co.uk

The Broad Chare Recently named the second best gastropub in the UK by Big 7 Travel, The Broad Chare has been serving up a warm atmosphere on Newcastle’s Quayside since 2011. Referring to itself as a ‘proper pub’, The Broad Chare is all about cosy comforts both in decor and food. Enjoy a pint of IPA next to a warm fire with a hearty pie and let all of your troubles fade away… thebroadchare.co.uk

Where to shop >> Northumberland St. The hub of retail in Newcastle, Northumberland Street is always buzzing with folks carrying bags upon bags of goodies. You’ll find everything you need for your Christmas shop here, with some of the biggest brands in the world lining the street. Take a peek at the famous Fenwick window display whilst you trot your way up to Flannels to deck out your wardrobe in the latest winter designer fashion. Eldon Square Continue your Geordie shopping excursion with a stroll through Eldon Square, the city’s historic shopping centre. Home to the likes of Ernest Jones, John Lewis, Kurt Geiger, Lakeland, Apple and more, Eldon Square is a premium shopping experience that will have you smiling with glee. eldonsquare.co.uk

Somewhere to stay >> The Vermont Hotel Rest that weary head of yours in luxurious style at The Vermont Hotel. Right next to Newcastle Castle, this grand hotel is the perfect place to unwind after a big day out in the city. Combining 1930s grandeur with contemporary elegance and luxury, The Vermont is everything you could ever dream of when planning the perfect city getaway. vermont-hotel.com

Where to visit >> Grey’s Monument Right in the heart of the city, this towering monument to Charles Grey is one of the most iconic sights in Newcastle. Erected in 1838, this 135ft high landmark is truly a sight to behold. If you’re not afraid of heights you can book a trip to the top of the monument, climbing the 164 steps for an incredible skyline view of the city. Newcastle Cathedral and Castle It’s not often that you find a castle more or less right in the middle of a busy city, but Newcastle’s namesake castle is still standing tall after almost 800 years. It’s open to the public and one of the best places to learn about the history of this intriguing city. After that pop over to another architectural spectacle in the form of Newcastle Cathedral. It recently had a multi-million pound restoration and

stands as one of the most breathtaking buildings in the city that you’ve just got to see. newcastlecathedral.org.uk Chinatown One of only five Chinatowns in England, Stowell Street pays homage to Newcastle’s proud Chinese population with an abundance of mouthwatering restaurants and Asian food shops. Take a walk through the towering red arch and be transported to a world of neon lights and colour. It’s a quirky area of Newcastle that only adds more character to this diverse city. St. James’ Park If there’s one thing Newcastle is known for, it’s football! Even if you’re not a fan of the beautiful game it’s worth a visit to this iconic stadium to see what all the fuss is about. Surrounded by monuments to Newcastle legends like Sir Bobby Robson, Alan Shearer and Jackie Milburn, the entire area stands as a testament to how much pride Geordies have in their city. Grab a drink at Nine Bar or take a stadium tour for the true black and white army experience. nufc.co.uk

Stretch those legs >> Leazes Park It’s not all medieval architecture, football and shopping here in Geordie land, we’ve got some lovely green spots in the city too! Having opened in 1873, Leazes Park is the city’s oldest park. Sitting just behind St. James’, west of the city centre, Leazes is an idyllic getaway from the hustle and bustle of the city. With tennis courts, a lake, coffee shop and bandstand, Leazes Park is the perfect place to relax and stroll the day away.

NOV/DEC21

As we head toward the festive period, I’ve been asked by a number of sellers what the housing market looks like for next year and whether the current market conditions will continue into 2022. It’s been a turbulent year in the housing market due to a variety of reasons. The first stamp duty deadline in March was preceded by another lockdown. The news that the deadline was to be extended and then tapered to the end of September caused another buying frenzy. Competition intensified for property with a potential saving of £15,000 if the sale was completed before June. The average UK home increased in value by 6% in the year to the end of July, driven by a high volume of buyers and limited housing stock available. The price rise of 6% is more than double the 2.3% rate of annual growth recorded to July 2020 last year. An average property in the UK now costs £234,000. So, what is happening in the market now? Well, the party is still in full swing. Demand from buyers continues to increase, with the number of people looking to purchase a home 20.5% higher than the average for 2020. As a result, there was a 40% increase in sales with homes taking an average of just 26 days to sell, almost half the 49 days they took in 2019. The high level of buying interest is being met by a deficit of homes for sale. So, we have increased demand being met with a severe shortage of supply. Add to this the historic low mortgage rates and we have market conditions not seen in over 20 years. Typically, a home mover both buys and sells, creating demand and supply. The current shortage is not being helped by increased activity among first-time buyers and property investors, who do not have a home to sell. If you’re selling a larger house, there’s more good news. We still have a ‘race for space’ with transactions for four and five bedroom properties being the most active property type. This shortage is reflected in the price of houses which jumped by 7.6% during the past year, compared with flats which went up just 1.2%. What will happen next year? The shortage of homes for sale is expected to continue well into 2022. The lack of supply, especially for family houses, means the market will start to naturally slow as buyers hold on for more stock to become available before making a move. The slowdown caused by lack of supply is expected to impact prices, with annual growth expected to ease back from 6% to between 4% and 5%. Additionally, an increase in inflation should see mortgage interest rates increase slightly which will also cool the market. As we move into 2022, there will be a strong start to the year in line with seasonal trends, but after that, a return to more usual levels of activity among first-time buyers, the effect of the ending of the stamp duty holiday, and some buyers waiting for more stock to become available will result in a slow repairing of stock levels through the first half. On behalf of all the team, we’d like to wish everyone a peaceful and happy holiday period and we look forward to being of service in 2022. Why not call on Anthony Jones for advice about upgrading your home and how you can make it more appealing for yourself and for prospective buyers. We promise there won’t be a loaf of bread or a coffee percolator in sight. anthonyjonesproperties.co.uk 01325 776 424

“Inside knowledge, long-standing community relationships and communication is key!” “I set Adrienne a challenge to find us the perfect house in a specific location, and at a time when the market was overheated. She never gave up, and with the help of her and her amazing team we have moved into the perfect house, exactly in the location we want. I thought this type of personal service had disappeared but Adrienne and her team have certainly proved me wrong. At this level of the market, both buyers and vendors can be difficult to deal with but Adrienne’s local knowledge and long-standing relationships in the community were crucial in securing me this property. The property in question was not available on the open market. I am delighted to recommend the Wynyard Fine and Country team to anyone.”

PROPERTY ADVICE

Going once, going twice… Leading estate agency, Pattinson, has released figures that show there’s been a huge rise in the number of properties being sold at auction. We chat to Auction Director, Justin Beckwith, to find out why so many people are choosing to sell their houses this way...

In the first half of 2021 Pattinson Estate Agents saw an 82% growth in units of sale compared to the same period in 2020. The company also saw a 64% increase in the number of properties coming onto the market for auction. As one of the North East’s largest estate agents, these figures indicate not only a regional but a national trend for increased popularity in selling properties by auction. Justin Beckwith, Auction Director at Pattinson Estate Agents, says auction is becoming a

NOV/DEC21

more appealing and common way to sell properties: “More people are now choosing auction as their first option, rather than as a last resort. We’re also selling a higher percentage of properties, which is due to the buoyant market.” Reflecting on why more people are being enticed to sell their properties by auction, Justin says there are many benefits, including customers getting the best price for their property and no estate agency fees. “With the market continuing to be so strong, auction is the best way to maintain complete transparency because buyers know what’s coming in, so we can guarantee the best possible price.” During the pandemic, as with most aspects of our lives, auctioning of houses took place online. Something that Pattinson Estate Agents predicts will continue, despite life beginning to get back to (a new) normal. “It’s the go-to way to sell,” continues Justin. “With the ability for sellers to have their property legally prepared within days of ‘hitting’ the market, this enables buyers to make informed decisions early on in the process, usually prior to bidding, which means there’s less opportunity for an aborted sale.” “In essence, the world of auction is changing and the market share of auction listings upon the property portals is growing,” says Justin. “So much so, that the listings websites have recognised that they need to place more focus on auction lots. Whether online or live stream, ultimately the convenience of a property purchase via

auction, coupled with less desire for people to physically attend an auction room, is creating this rise in popularity.” “It provides both buyers and sellers with an option that eliminates all the usual property sale or purchase pitfalls, and really does make auction purchases more accessible, whether you’re a cash buyer, or even if you require a mortgage.” pattinson.co.uk

Bright, bold & beautiful Greatlook has been creating quality kitchens, bedrooms and bathrooms for over 25 years establishing a much-respected brand within the North East. Nicole Wood chats to Ian Mason, the creative brains behind the business to find out about one of his latest projects…

66 luxe-magazine.co.uk

As I step through the doors of the Greatlook studio located at Team Valley, Gateshead, I am in awe of the impressive displays surrounding me - each one as strikingly beautiful as the next. The outstanding reputation of this North East brand for bespoke service and beautiful innovative design has been born from sheer passion and diligence and I feel that instantly as I sit down to chat with owner, Ian Mason. As we scan through the images of one of his latest projects, Ian tells me how the process begins: “At the start of any project, I like to get to know my client. It’s important for them to show me pictures of what they like and what they desire for their solution. For me, it’s more than just a kitchen or a bedroom, it’s creating a lifestyle for them, so it’s important that I get a feel for who they are, incorporate their character and advise them in the right direction.” “Once I’ve had that initial conversation and understand what it is they’re looking for, I take it to the drawing board where I come up with ideas to present back to them, offering advice and guidance when needed. For example, if someone shows me a grey and white kitchen, I can then advise they opt for stone grey, it’s lighter, less

harsh, will match better with other colours and will outlive the ‘on-trend dark grey’,” Ian explains. Commissioned by the client to design and completely remodel the kitchen of their family home prior to an extension build, Greatlook got ahead of the game and offered their expertise prior to the work being carried out. “With an extension scheduled to be built, I met with the client and offered my advice in order to ensure the added space was going to be utilised efficiently,” says Ian. “Using the information provided, we worked up a plan to make the most of the space rather than working on the design after the room had already been built. Instead of what originally would have been two areas separated with walls and doors, it has been transformed into a spacious kitchen and impressive lounge area that interlinks while still holding a separate feel when desired,” he adds. The result? A large open plan space offering a mixture of homely touches and a space for hosting social gatherings with provision for dining, both formal and informal. Getting ahead of the game not only allowed Ian to create a more versatile kitchen space, but it also allowed for the client to incorporate some of their extra desires including a bar and entertainment area

for hosting friends and family. “We incorporated a fully functioning bar into the design with large doors opening up into the garden which is perfect for hosting parties and if the bad weather hits, the guests can move inside to the bar area. “That’s what being able to take control of how the space was used has helped, we’ve been able to add these extra things in a way which makes sense, adds value and has a functional purpose. Yes, we could have included a bar anyway, but this way we had the opportunity to make it more versatile,” explains Ian. When it came to the overall look, Ian came up with a gorgeous mix and match aesthetic, combining hand painted cabinets with quartz stone worktops. Modern, sophisticated and oh-so elegant. Inspiration can come from many different sectors, which can include fashion, textiles and even the automotive industry. Mix and match of colour with different textures can bring individuality to a timeless scheme. So simple, yet so brilliant. Before any final decisions are made, Ian and the Greatlook team provide their clients with sample books, colour swatches, examples and ideas. “You aren’t just paying to have your kitchen, bedroom or living space designed, you’re paying for expert advice, opinions and guidance every step of the way. We’re on

hand to discuss likes, dislikes, needs and to put the client at ease and answer any questions or worries they may have. “For example, this particular client loved on-trend copper, so we incorporated this in terms of accessories including the light fixtures and the finish on the kitchen stools. However, when it came to more permanent fixtures including the door handles and taps, we advised going with a neutral silver finish. Why? It provides longevity. Smaller fittings such as lights can be easily changed to match particular likes and trends rather than having to revamp the whole kitchen,” says Ian. From the sophisticated design concept of adding bi-folding doors to flood the room with borrowed light, to clever colour schemes and stylish decor, right down to picking out accessories such as plants and candles, Greatlook have created a beautifully-proportioned space, capturing the essence of the client, to perfectly complement their lifestyle. Whether your style is contemporary or traditional, the team at Greatlook have the experience and knowledge to help you achieve the room of your dreams. From the first meeting to the finished project, you can be confident in knowing you’re going to receive a bespoke service and beautiful design. greatlook.co.uk

STYLISH LIVING

HOME WITH HEART with Kerry Lockwood, interior stylist, blogger and content creator Wintry flower arrangements, beautiful kitchen stoneware and decking the halls with homemade garlands... My Space…. Is it just me or has Christmas really crept up on us this year?! We’re in the middle of renovating our house and hoping to move in at the end of November. So, I’m at that stage where I’m frantically packing ready to move and also desperate to start making the new house feel Christmassy. Wintry foliage and flowers like eucalyptus and winter berries are my absolute favourites, so I’ll be filling vases with those for now, until we have enough boxes unpacked to deck the halls. We have a beautiful new fireplace and log burner in the living room so this image from The White Company is giving me all the inspiration.

Try this… Wreath and garland making are two of my favourite things to do at Christmas time. Last year was my first attempt at making a cedar pine (aka conifer) garland which was super simple to make. I just used some rope as the base and attached the conifer in bunches. You can find the full tutorial on my Instagram. I love keeping them minimal, but you can also add lights too.

Question time Q: Can you recommend a way of covering the base of my artificial Christmas tree please? Yes, I absolutely love this flat rattan tree ring by Cox & Cox. It’s the perfect finishing touch and also great to hide wires etc. coxandcox.co.uk £150

Best Buy… I’ve been looking for a new dinner set for a while now and love this Oslo rim stoneware set from Procook. It has a lovely rustic feel but with a glaze too, perfect for entertaining family and friends over the Christmas period. procook.co.uk

Luxury estate agent, Sanderson Young has recently introduced Brackendene House to the market. A magnificent, detached Grade II listed family home waiting to be snatched up...

H OT P R O P E RT Y The lowdown >> Brackendene House is ideally positioned on an elevated site with access from Belle Vue Bank within the pleasant village of Low Fell. The property enjoys a stunning aspect and views out to the west overlooking the Team Valley and the surrounding hills of the Tyne Valley in the distance. The property is believed to have been originally constructed in the mid-1850s for James Leathart who was a well-known local businessman. The house was famed, not just for its magnificent architecture, but also because of its art collection and the owner’s friendship with leading interior designers from around the world, but most prominently William Morris, who was apparently a frequent visitor to the house in the late 1800s. Key features >> The grounds of the property are believed to extend to approximately 1.5 acres and include a mature woodland, a small dene and a former tennis court. The gardens are a particularly impressive feature with lovely walks and substantial trees which provide

The principal property was divided into three wings in the 1960s and over the last few years these separate wings have been re-joined to create the magnificent family residence. The property itself has the benefit of tall ceilings with elaborate carvings, beautiful frieze detailing and heritage-coloured paint. The solid oak doors, which are set into oak architraves, are a wonderful feature of the property. The entrance hall has beautiful limestone flooring and gives stair access to the lower ground floor, where there is now an excellent re-fitted games room and cinema area with parquet flooring, as well as a bar area - all of which is equipped with underfloor heating. Linking from the main entrance hall is a study with bespoke fitted storage, a dining room and a very elegant drawing room with dual aspect. The family room is also a highly impressive room with beautiful panelling. Three of the ground floor reception rooms offer tremendous original fireplaces with personal inscriptions. LITTLE LUXE

LUXE MAMA with Elysia Fryer My journey into motherhood...

Making memories... “When we recall Christmas past, we usually find that the simplest things - not the great occasions - give off the greatest glow of happiness.” - Bob Hope Looking back on my own childhood, one of the things that stands out to me most and triggers extra special memories, is Christmas. When I reflect on those moments, it’s not about the toys and the parties, it’s the days curled up by the fire with my siblings, learning Christmas carols with my grandparents and delivering Christmas cards to the neighbours with my mum. Now, as a Christmas-obsessed new mum,

I am incredibly excited to make the festive season super special for George. While he will only be turning 5 months old this December, I’m determined to put our family Christmas traditions into action from the off. Creating Christmas Traditions: Hayley Mcqueen >> Your Christmas traditions growing up? Growing up we always had a big Christmas with lots of family and friends. We had Joe Jordan’s family round often, as Dad would sometimes have to be away for football, so it was the mums, the grandparents and a load of kids - seven of us in total. We always had coins in the Christmas pudding wrapped in foil! Also, we always opened our presents in our PJs first thing, none of this getting dressed and ready business, it was straight in! Most memorable Christmas Day? It was probably the last Christmas we had with my grandad, my mum’s dad. We had our aunties over for the day and Grandpa wore his paper hat right until he passed out for bed. I think for me it’s always been having family around that stands out as opposed to the toys or gifts. How do your own family Christmases look? Ayla has her own little tree in her bedroom and I collect new baubles to add to it every year. I think we will always do present opening in pyjamas and there will be someone (usually me) in the background with a bin bag tidying up all the paper!). I have some lovely Christmas stories which I will start on 1 December. We will carry those through every year and continue to add to the Christmas collection. Every year we go to a light display, it has been at Kew up until now but this year I’ve booked Blenheim Palace to see the Nutcracker.

O Christmas Tree From 19 November There’s nothing more magical than blocking out a day in December (or November if you’re feeling extra organised!) to pick your family Christmas tree for the sparkly season. Callum, George and I will certainly be making the trip to Croft Christmas Trees this year, before spending the day belting out the festive tunes and decorating. croftchristmastrees.com

72 luxe-magazine.co.uk

Most treasured Christmas item? The baubles we still have from our childhood. My mum has one big tree beautifully decorated, then there is one that she has all sorts on. There’s even a McDonald’s Happy Meal Christmas bear on it from the 80s! What’s on Ayla’s list? Ayla’s list will be games to play with, she is big into puzzles. Christmassy experiences are just as important. We are going to go to London for a big day out with her in December, take her to see all the lights, go for a fancy lunch somewhere and visit Hamleys and Fortnum & Mason.

GROWING UP

Little moments The build-up to Christmas is such an exciting time but for some families, the extended festive to-do list brings added pressures that can cause emotions to bubble to the surface... When we’re feeling stressed, we can sometimes lash out at those closest to us. Have you ever had a situation with your children where, seemingly out of the blue, you have just lost it and been completely consumed by rage? A parent friend I know said that he had never been an angry person until he had children but now he regularly flies off the handle. That’s quite a statement to make but sometimes we do seem to have exaggerated reactions to our children’s behaviour. If a colleague took an extra five minutes to find their coat we would wait with patience but when our child does it, we see red. If our friend picked up every candle in the store to investigate the scent, we probably wouldn’t say a thing but when our children touch things we go crazy! We often don’t respond to our children with the same respect and courtesy as we do to complete strangers. Why is that? Have you ever wondered why our children can sometimes trigger these intense emotions inside of us? The answer is quite complex because there could be several reasons why we flip our lids. In the moment, we could be overwhelmed, exhausted or under time constraints. But how do we manage to control ourselves around adults, yet we lack this restraint in our most precious relationships; the ones with our children? In my experience, when we look below the surface of the stresses and strains of modern life, two factors usually appear. One is that we take for granted the fact that our children love us; and two, our child’s behaviour triggers something negative in us from our own childhood. These are pretty

NOV/DEC21

big concepts to wrap our heads around. Let’s take the first one. Our children come into this world dependent upon us. They need us for survival and this attachment is interwoven with a deep love. Our children love us unequivocally. Have you ever noticed that if you lose your temper or you are dismissive of your child, they will often cuddle you afterwards? Children are wired to seek connection from us and if they feel that this bond is under threat (e.g. because we are emotionally pushing them away) they will cling to us. But we often take this for granted. We know our children will be gracious and forgiving when we mess up. They rarely withhold their love. In fact, they seem to love us more in our worst moments. When we are grouchy or lack patience or are emotionally distant, this is when they want to be around us more. Children instinctively sense when the attachment fibres are tenuous and they unconsciously try to fix them. Aren’t they amazing? Merciful, understanding, loving and deeply connected to us. But because of this, we don’t always treat them with the respect they deserve; we sometimes become complacent about their love for us. Now I know I’m over-generalising here but it is worth reflecting on. So, what about us? We often talk about the unconditional love we have for our children. We would walk over hot coals for them, we would shield them from danger but, what about in our less dramatic, day-to-day encounters with them? Truthfully, we don’t always give our love without strings attached. We don’t always love the true essence of our child. We don’t always whole-heartedly accept our children for who they are. Sometimes we would like them to

be a little bit quieter, neater, smarter, braver or softer. It’s hard to admit it because it’s true. We can learn so much from our children. They don’t want us to change or be anything more or less; they just want us to love them and look after them. That’s it. More often than not, if a parent has difficulty accepting their child for who they are, it’s probably because they haven’t accepted themselves fully. And this leads on to number two: wounds from our own childhood. I always say that our children are our greatest teachers and this is because they hold a mirror up to who we really are. If we have any past trauma or bad childhood memories, interactions with our children will often trigger these. Generally, when we are triggered our reaction will be intense and disproportionate to the situation. Maybe you were the youngest in your family and you never felt like anyone listened to you or respected you. Now, when your child is cheeky or disrespectful, it triggers something deep inside and you become livid. Maybe you came from a chaotic household with lots of shouting and door-slamming and so when your children are noisy in the house, it sends you into an anxious frenzy. Many people don’t think that their past experiences are relevant anymore because they are older and they have ‘dealt with it’ but becoming a parent can re-open old wounds. When you parent with unresolved issues weighing you down, you are reacting to present situations with past pain and this isn’t fair; to you or your children. When I work with parents in this way, we often talk about their own childhood and see if we can identify their triggers. I ask them to get curious and notice what pushes their buttons and we try to work backwards and find the cause of their discomfort. When we’ve done lots of work on the back-story then we focus on self-regulation strategies. Digging up the past can be a painful process but the self-awareness it fosters can also bring

closure or a sense of peace to negative experiences they have had. This is called re-parenting and it can really strengthen the relationship with our children when we begin to heal ourselves. And please remember, we’re all human. If you are triggered and you lose your temper in the run-up to the holidays, you can always repair the rupture in your relationship. Apologising to your child and taking responsibility for your behaviour can have a powerful impact on your connection. It strengthens the bond and you model humility in the process. Now that’s the real spirit of Christmas.

HAIR GURUS

Top of the crop From the harbours of Singapore to the suburbs of Berlin, Steve Chapman has worked with Savile Row tailors, been named Classic Barber of the Year and welcomed hollywood A-listers to his seat. Founder and creator of the Hoi Polloi, Steve has recently set up a second store in Whitley Bay as he brings a new wave of contemporary barbering to the region. Matthew Thomas went along to find out why there’s such a buzz about the place…

Tell us a little about yourself... I’m Steve, owner of The Hoi Polloi. I have been cutting hair for the past 11 years and I’ve travelled across Europe and South East Asia managing shops, providing training and working events and collaborations with some of the world’s biggest companies. I started The Hoi Polloi in February 2020 after moving back from my previous role in Singapore - my wife is from Newcastle. What does the North East mean to you? The North East and Newcastle, in particular, is a city I have visited for the past 12 years and have fallen in love with, and it’s a hub for thriving new independent businesses. I believe Newcastle is going through a real developmental stage with areas such as Heaton and Whitley Bay becoming trendy suburbs that offer great food and drink options. When I visited back in summer 2019, that’s when I knew it was the city for me to open my first shop. Where did your enthusiasm for barbering begin? My passion for the industry is led by an inherent hunger to always learn and continue to develop. As hair trends change and styles come and go, there are constantly ways to improve our service and that’s what drives me to create a brand that can dynamically adapt itself to suit the needs of customers and our staff. For me, there is no full-stop as to what we can achieve with The Hoi Polloi. We are constantly changing and growing which is incredibly exciting. Tell us about your time cutting across the globe…  I have been very lucky to work with some great brands that have taken me to some amazing places. Those experiences, working with different cultures, have enabled me to create a space that is truly for everyone to enjoy. It’s the subtle

touches that make people feel comfortable, and that’s how we want everyone to feel in our shops. What’s the story behind The Hoi Polloi? Can you pinpoint a definitive moment that provided the inspiration for its creation? As with everything, I think it is a culmination of several different experiences. Small moments where you receive exceptional customer service and you think, ‘I want to do that when I have my own place’. I wanted to create a community and a feeling around a shop that people really felt a connection to, for both customers and for the staff. I want the staff to feel appreciated, but it’s vital that staff feel like they are developing and that there is always the next challenge to work towards. Do you think The Hoi Polloi features elements/influences from your time in each country? For sure, there are influences everywhere from my time travelling. From luxury hotels in Asia to coffee shops in Melbourne, I have constantly been storing ideas of how I would do things when the time came to open up my own place. Any notable clientele that have walked through your doors from your time abroad? Along the way, I have been lucky enough to cut hair

for some really interesting characters. From Hollywood actors to sport stars and most importantly, regular, great people who have ‘normal jobs’. The Hoi Polloi is a barbershop where everyone is treated the same regardless of social status. That’s where the name comes from, The Hoi Polloi means everyone, the masses. That’s the people who we’re here to serve. Tell us about the work that has gone on at 102 Whitley Road? It’s been a full refit with numerous walls coming down to open up the interior space. We wanted to focus on minimalism and create a store that culminated in an airy, elegant space to work and enjoy. We worked tirelessly on creating subtle textures and contrasting materials to bring together what is a striking-looking shop. What is the inspiration behind your signature decor? Are there any particular themes or aesthetics that have inspired you? There are lots of influences running throughout our Hoi Polloi stores. I’m really fond of simplicity and not having cluttered, busy spaces which make it hard for me to relax. I like bright airy spaces that are well designed and functional. I take a great deal of inspiration from Scandinavian minimalism that’s subtly mixed with industrial interior design.

TAILOR MADE

The experience behind top tailoring

How is The Hoi Polloi different from other men’s barbers... I think first and foremost the quality of the cut is what is important. We have some incredible barbers that have travelled the world with years of experience behind them. That, paired with the training all our barbers undergo means you really are in for a top-notch haircut. At The Hoi Polloi, we begin the haircut with a consultation to ensure we ask the right questions to achieve your desired trim. We don’t rush this process, as we believe it to be a key factor to successfully executing the perfect haircut. The other distinguishing factor that sets us apart, is the environment of our shop. Both stores are clean and airy to help clients feel relaxed and comfortable. We pride ourselves on our attentive, informal and friendly service and we don’t accept any super-masculine, macho-man behaviour. It’s just good people, offering great haircuts. A sense of ‘community’ seems to be at the forefront of The Hoi Polloi’s offering... This has been key to growing our brand. By partnering with local businesses, we have been able to create some cool collaborations, as well as making some great friends along the way. We want people to feel they can drop in whenever they want, whether it be for a cut, a chat to talk if things aren’t going so well, or have someone to toast a beer with when things are going great.

That’s the people we’re here to serve Your store in Newcastle city centre has gone down really well since opening in 2019. What was the appeal of opening a second store in Whitley Bay? Whitley Bay is the place to be! It’s home to great independent shops, fabulous food and of course the beach is stunning. It’s an area that I spend a lot of time in when I am not cutting and love the vibe there. It’s friendly, yet manages to avoid coming across as pretentious and we’ve certainly felt that with the opening of our second store. Everyone has been so supportive and welcoming.
