A Valentine’s of a lifetime Enjoy captivating views of the Northumbrian coastline and the ultimate fine dining experience at Spanish City this Valentine’s

A region-wide programme of cultural events will take place throughout 2022, in the build up to the much-anticipated display of the Lindisfarne Gospels at Newcastle’s Laing Art Gallery in the autumn. There are too many events to mention them all, but here are some of the highlights… From Hartlepool to Hexham, Berwickupon-Tweed to Bishop Auckland, multiple venues and locations will invite visitors to explore, experience and enjoy a wealth of events, all drawing inspiration from different aspects of the 1300-year-old manuscript. From January until May, the Oriental Museum in Durham will host Monogatari: The art of storytelling in Japanese woodblock prints. It will explore how colourful Japanese prints were used to illustrate famous tales of samurai, travellers and heroes during the 18th and 19th centuries, and how, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, this style evolved to tell real-life news stories of conflict during the Sino-Japanese and Russo-Japanese wars. Opening in March and split between Durham and Sunderland, a project led by National Glass Centre named Glass Exchange, will see four, established contemporary artists create new work in glass. The displays will remain in situ until the end of September 2022. Another event taking place in Durham, at the cathedral and World Heritage Site from 16-18 April 2022, revolves around light projections shone onto its 12th century façade, music and drama performances, lectures, a family fun day and food market. Between March and October 2022, Museums Northumberland will present ‘A Northumberland Menagerie’, a stunning series of new works by local artist, Bethan Maddocks. Discover stories of Northumberland’s animals, past and present, real and imagined, through Bethan’s magical, large-scale paper-cut installations at Woodhorn Museum, Berwick Museum & Art Gallery, Morpeth Chantry Bagpipe Museum and Hexham Old Gaol. Autumn will also see 40 life-size illuminated sheep appear across villages, towns and landscapes in Northumberland. Digital and light artist, Deepa Mann-Kler, will create the flock which will be adopted by communities and hosted spaces across the county. A series of trails will be created that can be completed on foot, bike or public transport to see the sheep in their diverse locations. This will create

JAN/FEB22

a modern-day pilgrimage highlighting the landscape, culture and heritage of Northumberland.  In Newcastle cathedral, Exploring the Lindisfarne Gospels (17 September 1 December 2022) presents a number of events that combine key elements of Christian faith: art, music and the written word. The entire Inspired by Lindisfarne Gospels programme is, of course, sparked by the exhibition at the Laing Art Gallery from 17 September to 3 December, which will display the most spectacular manuscript to survive from Anglo-Saxon England, on loan from the British Library. Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums art curators have worked with the British Library and with artists to explore the history of the Gospels, and how it can bring people together today by inspiring ideas about identity and sense of place. Keith Merrin, Director, Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums, says: “It is wonderful that not only do we have the display of the Lindisfarne Gospels at the Laing Art Gallery to look forward to, but we also have this amazing range of events, exhibitions and new attractions for people to enjoy right across our region as part of the ‘Inspired by’ programme.” lindisfarnegospels2022.com

On Sunday 13 February and Monday 14 February, an exquisite Valentine’s dinner will be held in both 1910 Restaurant and The Champagne Bar at one of the North East’s most iconic venues, Spanish City. All of Spanish City’s food is made from only the freshest and finest ingredients on the market and vegetarian options will also be available upon request. Guests of the dinner will receive coffee and luxurious chocolate truffles, made on-site by the venue’s award-winning pastry team. Begin your evening in The Champagne Bar, where you can choose from a variety of cocktails, craft ales, spirits and Spanish City’s large selection of wines. There will also be live entertainment for you to enjoy and dance along to. Both on-site and nearby parking is readily available for guests, and there’s an abundance of local accommodation if you’re looking to make the experience extra special.

Make 2022 a less taxing year

This year, make the best use of tax reliefs and allowances to help secure your financial future and the inheritance you leave to your loved ones Well over a decade since the financial crisis, the world is still a very uncertain place. It is always wrong to believe that market shocks are a thing of the past. From uncertainty over the impact of Brexit to supply chains, and of course COVID-19, there are always many risks that pose a challenge to investors at any given time; and any number of unforeseen factors in the years to come. But these are beyond our control; they cannot be allowed to prevent us from planning our financial futures. Indeed, we will give ourselves the best chance of achieving our financial goals if we focus on what we can control: how and where we invest our money, how much tax we pay, the size of our retirement fund, and how much of our estate passes to our family free of Inheritance Tax (IHT). Effective financial planning should be a year-round activity. Valuable reliefs and allowances can help to create long-term financial security for ourselves and our family. ISAs ISAs have become one of the most popular ways to save, principally because they are simple and readily accessible. The ISA allowance to £20,000 is a very

welcome method for encouraging individuals to invest for their future. However, as interest rates in the UK are lower than ever, money being held in Cash ISAs is failing to achieve the very basic objective of keeping pace with inflation. The result is real losses for savers. Those who are investing their ISA allowance for the long term – in assets offering the scope for attractive levels of income and capital growth – are giving themselves a better chance of maximising the tax-saving opportunities on offer. Individuals yet to use their ISA allowance, or with accumulated ISA savings, need to carefully consider their options to ensure that they are maximising this valuable opportunity to generate tax-efficient capital and income for the future. Pensions Saving into a pension is an even more attractive prospect than it was a few years ago. This is because there is much greater freedom for taking benefits; and pension savings can now be more easily left as part of a tax-free inheritance. However, the advantages extend further than just drawing benefits and passing money on to loved ones: the government still rewards savers by giving them tax relief on their pension contributions. Subject to certain limitations, for every 80p

you contribute to a pension, the government automatically adds 20p in tax relief. Higher earners can claim extra tax relief through their annual tax return, so a £1 pension contribution can effectively cost just 60p. However, with the government under increasing pressure to reduce public spending, there’s no guarantee that the higher rates of tax relief will be maintained into the future. Those wishing to make their retirement plans a reality should consider fully utilising their annual allowance for this tax year to make the most of the tax breaks on offer. Unused allowances can be carried forward, but only from the three previous tax years. This financial year is the final chance for pension savers to use the 2018/19 allowance. Inheritance Tax There are few more confusing – or unpopular – taxes than IHT. There are a number of exemptions that allow individuals to reduce future bills. Perhaps the best known is the annual gifting allowance, which gives individuals the opportunity to remove £3,000 of assets from their estate immediately (£6,000 if they use the previous year’s allowance as well). Taking steps to reduce your taxable estate by topping up a child’s pension or Junior ISA could go a long way to providing them with an invaluable head start in life. The Junior ISA allowance is £9,000 for the 21/22 tax year. Also, make this year’s £3,000 gifting allowance count – and carry forward last year’s, if you haven’t used it already. It’s a time of the year when individuals and couples are given an opportunity to

put their long-term plans back on track by using reliefs and allowances that would otherwise be lost. Nevertheless, this requires some knowledge and expertise. That’s why you should speak with a financial adviser to better understand how you can gain maximum advantage for this year and the years to come.

If you feel you could benefit from a financial review of your specific circumstances, I offer a no obligation review to meet your individual needs. This review could be via a zoom meeting, telephone call or face to face at a Covid-secure venue, at a time and location convenient to you. MAKING MOVES

In the flow

Esmée Halliday has turned her passion for movement into a career, enabling her to every day do what makes her happiest. Yoga and dance has provided her with many exciting opportunities, which, as she tells Claudia Robinson, she has embraced with open arms...

Raised in Northumberland, Esmée discovered her love for dance and movement at an early age. She began her formative training at Dance City in Newcastle, participating in the Advanced Training Programme. It was a big commitment for someone so young, with four sessions a week, including full Saturdays, so this instilled a strong work ethic for Esmée and she never missed a class from the age of 12 until she went to university. Esmée headed to the bright lights of London where she furthered her training at Trinity

14

Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, achieving a First Class Honours degree in Contemporary Dance and was awarded the Sylvia Bodmer Memorial Fund for Outstanding Achievement in Choreological Studies. Keen to grow as a dance artist Esmée auditioned to join the critically acclaimed postgraduate dance company, Emergence, and only two weeks after graduating she started her MA in Manchester, under the artistic direction of choreographer Joss Arnott. She spent a year touring nationally and gained yet another qualification, a distinction in her MA in Professional Dance Performance. The following year Esmée worked as a freelance

dance artist, travelling the UK as well as performing in a contemporary festival in Oslo, Norway. In early 2020, Esmee found herself with a short break in her schedule which is where her yoga journey began. “From the age of 12, until finishing my Masters in my early 20s it had been a full-on dance life,” explains Esmée. “It was wonderful to have that experience and I fully immersed myself into it. When I look back, yoga was something I always had a curiosity for but I only really valued it for its physical benefits, using the practice as a way to supplement my dance training. I began feeling a shift in myself in early 2020 which ended up with me booking a

flight to India. I flew into Delhi, and some nine hours later arrived at Sattva Yoga Academy, in the foothills of the Himalayas. It was all so quick, I had arrived in the evening and couldn’t help feeling a bit apprehensive about the decision I’d just made. As soon as I opened my curtains that first morning I knew I was in the right place. This was in March 2020, just as the pandemic was starting. It began to become a talking point with people debating whether they should head home before borders close. After contemplation I decided to stay put, I was so in love with what I was doing, it felt like fate that I was here. >>

MAKING MOVES

Esmée had originally flown out to India with the intention of doing 200 hours of yoga training but circumstances enabled her to notch up 500 hours before it really was time to head home. “Honestly, I could have stayed there the entire year,” she says. “I was gutted to leave but I knew I had to get home as it was such an uncertain time. I know I will go back though. It was magical and I need to explore it more. “In the end there was such a small group of people left that the training felt very precious and personal. I was really able to live the full philosophy of yoga, both on and off the mat. It’s so much more than just practising postures, which is how we can often view it in the west. It’s a way of life, an integrated practice to connect the mind, body and spirit. For me movement has always been about being in the moment, fully embodying the now. I realised there was a real synergy between the art form of dance and the practice of yoga” This is when Esmée’s two worlds of dance and yoga merged. The discipline she grew up with married perfectly with her new found love of an ancient practice. Esmée explains that her experience in India, and her newest skill, has had a huge impact on how she now moves as a dancer, and how she teaches. “I’ve come back into the dance world and yoga has definitely influenced it. I love that my roots have stemmed from such a beautiful expressive art form. Within dance you’re valued for your body and its ability to move and perform, but this can leave you feeling rather empty and looking for that sense of self, and I feel like that’s what yoga has really helped me with. “They go hand in hand, enhancing each other and for me they’ve connected as one entity which is really lovely. I returned home bursting with a passion to share these techniques. It felt like it wasn’t an option not to teach, so, started teaching online which is when I created my brand ‘esméeflow’. It felt like perfect timing as more than ever people were seeking the support of yoga and mediation.” In the summer of 2020, and again in summer 2021, when people were allowed to move around more freely, Esmee headed to where her parents now live on Tresco island in the Isles of Scilly. There she taught yoga to islanders and guests and enjoyed two

16

luxe-magazine.co.uk

busy seasons. Esmée explains: “On Tresco, as soon as people step on the island they relax. With no cars and being surrounded by water there’s very much a feeling of being at one with nature so yoga works well out there. I loved teaching both group sessions and one-to-ones and what’s so great about yoga is that it’s something that anyone can participate in, it truly is for everybody.” “I love to teach. Movement is such an instrumental part of who I am and what I do. Naturally there’s a sense of freedom that can be found in movement but this can also be applied to the breath, energy work and meditation. Through my teaching I aim to help others find this sense of release and experience the accessibility of yoga. I am a very hands-on teacher, which I think my background in dance has definitely

influenced. My experience is that people can often feel intimidated by yoga, either believing they’re not flexible enough or not understanding the correct alignment for their body, so I think it’s so important for people to feel they’re being supported. If I correct their positions, their progression happens much quicker. It’s about meeting your body where its at and letting go of tension not only physically but easing stress mentally and emotionally too. It can be transformational. Whilst Esmée’s yoga clients benefit from her hands-on approach and dance experience, her dance clients also benefit from her yoga expertise. She helps dancers find new ways to unlock their bodies through yoga, and combining the two disciplines is something she hopes to do more of in the future.

Esmée still enjoys performing and is currently part of Fertile Ground, the North East of England’s repertory touring dance company. “I love returning to the region and can’t wait to get back to Dance City. I’m also keen to launch some yoga retreats and this time take them up North. I’m busy researching venues but for me, Northumberland is an ideal location, away from the craziness of town and city life. It’s a beautiful environment and the retreats are definitely something I’d love to do and passionate to get on with in 2022. “I’ll continue to create a balance in my business of being a dancer and a yogi as the two go so perfectly together, and I want other people to be able to benefit from this perfect partnership too.” esmeeflow.co.uk

ROVING REPORTER

Foreign affairs Anna Foster has always loved international news. Born and raised in South Shields, she still regularly returns home to visit her parents, but she is also very much at home in front of a camera, or with microphone in hand, reporting from far flung places, famine-stricken or war-torn countries and political hot spots, for the BBC. Claudia Robinson caught up with her during a recent visit back to the UK…

Anna’s career in broadcasting started early, when she worked on the Saturday sport show at Metro Radio whilst studying her A-Levels at South Tyneside College. She went on to study English at Durham University, where she worked on student radio, before undertaking a postgraduate certificate in journalism at City University London. After graduating she joined BBC Radio Cleveland (now BBC Tees). Anna soon joined BBC Radio 5 Live as a regional reporter which launched her national, and now international journalism career. She presented on Radio One’s Newsbeat, Radio 5 Live’s Weekend Breakfast Show and for nearly a decade presented 5 Live Drive alongside Tony Livesey.

She was always the first person to put their hand up when the editors needed someone to go out on challenging assignments. “I’ve always loved working in places where it’s a bit more difficult and you have to look harder for stories, and where stories are harder to tell. I’ve reported from Iraq and Afghanistan during the wars, went to the Central African Republic during the civil war, reported on Ebola in Sierra Leone and the famine in South Sudan.” So, when the opportunity arose to be Middle East Correspondent for the BBC, Anna, again, was the first to put her hand up. She applied for the job and very soon found herself kissing goodbye to husband John and children, Ben and Jess, and flying out to Beirut. “During the pandemic, for obvious reasons,

the chances to go abroad for stories were presenting themselves less and less, so this is an amazing opportunity for me. Jobs like this are advertised by location and this is the one I really wanted. I was keen to go somewhere important, challenging and that had stories that I thought needed to be told.” As a well-known voice on national radio for many years, Anna explains that her new role is very different to what she’s used to. On any one day she could be filming and editing a package for the 10 'o'clock news on BBC One, reporting live on Radio Four, making a digital video for Instagram and writing something for the BBC News website. “It’s great to be able to use pictures to tell the stories too and I love that I can now produce my stories in a

variety of different ways. As a journalist you want as many people as possible to learn about the issues that you find and this job ensures I’m hitting many different audiences. “It can be really busy, especially when a big story breaks and everyone wants something from you at the same time. One minute you’re doing a piece for World TV, then the News Channel, then World Service Radio. It can be crazy, but I thrive on that.” While Anna spends much of her working time based in Lebanon, she and her cameraman, Lee, sometimes get sent to jobs in other parts of the Middle East, at the drop of a hat. “We were assigned to cover the attempted assassination of the Iraqi Prime Minister in Baghdad for a few days and I need to be ready to jump on a plane at any time really. I’ve become a >>

We go back to South Shields every couple of months and I love it... We enjoy a walk along the beach at Seaburn, fill up on icecream, cake and fish and chips, not necessarily in that order!

packing ninja and have become very good at travelling light. If I was ever highmaintenance I’ve got it pared back now to the absolute basics!” Anna enjoys making the most of her time in a new place, and tries to get around Lebanon when she has some downtime at weekends. “Unless a big story breaks, of course,” Anna continues. “And I wouldn’t want it any other way. You feel like it’s your patch, so if something happens on a Sunday and I’m on my way out for a hike in the Lebanese mountains, it’s all change and I’m back to work. “But when time does allow, there really are some lovely places to see. The mountains are beautiful and there’s a gorgeous harbour at Batroun which I love to visit. Every Saturday morning there’s a great market selling homemade food, fresh fruit and produce. I’ve also started jogging again and enjoy running along the coast, seeing families out enjoying themselves, people fishing. Lebanon is struggling badly in so many ways, the currency has plunged, people are living in poverty, services are missing, there are regular power cuts; and yet it’s a really lovely, beautiful country. “I feel that it’s really important to get immersed in the place that you’re working, to get involved and be part of the community, rather than just being an observer. It becomes part of your life and you get a deeper understanding of the place. I took part in the Beirut 8k a few weeks ago and found it strangely reminiscent of the Great North Run. I grew up really close to the finish line at the seafront and seeing all those people running together over here reminded me of my childhood. It was odd, being so far away and weirdly so close at the same time.

24 luxe-magazine.co.uk

“My parents are hoping to come and visit soon and anyone I talk to back home, I tell them how much they’d love it here. Of course I miss my family, and love nothing more than my visits home to see John and the children. I’m very lucky to have such a supportive husband and frankly, he is brilliant and far better at day-to-day parenting than me. He always has been. He’s the playground whizz, he knows everyone at school, has the packed lunches sorted and knows who is at what club on which day. When Anna does come back to the UK, she also enjoys taking Jess, who’s eight in February and Ben, nine, to see her parents back in South Shields. “We go back every

couple of months and I love it. We have the inevitable curry on Ocean Road, which is something we’ve done forever. We enjoy a walk along the beach at Seaburn, fill up on icecream, cake and fish and chips, not necessarily in that order! “It’s just so nice to do lovely, family stuff, eating nice food, getting fresh air, and the children love it up there. They go and stay with my parents when I’m away sometimes too and enjoy getting the ferry to North Shields, or going to the museum or visits to the National Trust. When I was a child I used to enjoy going on the little train at South Marine Park, the one that goes around the lake, with all the carriages named after characters from Catherine

Cookson novels. What’s so great now is that my children can still do that, the place has been revamped, it’s even better now than it was when I was little!” Anna is relishing the new challenges her Middle East job throws at her and it’s clear that she is loving every minute. Talking to her, hearing about her adventures and the passion she has for her job, she strikes me as another Kate Adie, who also heralds from the North East - born in Whitley Bay and raised in Sunderland. I ask her if that’s been said before. “Yes, she’s an inspiration that’s for sure. I remember working alongside her at an election count there a few years ago. She was formidable! I’m always happy to be compared to someone so great!”

TIMELESS LUXURY

Capsule collections North East fashion brand, NOVO, prides itself on designing premium essential pieces for modern women, empowering them to adopt a timeless style by offering seasonal garments that won’t go out of date…

Co-founded by Amy Whitfield and Rebecca Ward, who are childhood friends having attended Durham High School together since the age of six, NOVO focuses on a slow fashion approach, which aims to create beautiful clothes with wearability and longevity at their core. Amy says: “The ethos behind the NOVO brand is to deliver interchangeable clothing to modern women with core collections that focus on staple pieces that are made to last. The emphasis is on using premium fabrics and natural yarns to build a capsule collection of timeless wardrobe must-haves.” Following a financial boost from investors Killian Coyne and model Leanna King, in 2019, Amy and Rebecca have enjoyed further developing their brand. Amy, Fashion Creative, says: “Each one of our team brings their own unique skills and thinking to everything the brand represents, from the design of collections to branding, vision and position in the industry. Great pride and dedication is always a big part of every action and project within the business, with customer satisfaction being the number one priority.” Rebecca is Operations Director, bringing with her an excellent knowledge of supply chain management and great relationships with manufacturers. Rebecca says: “I work closely with Amy on showcasing our collections to worldwide manufacturers for sampling and production, while Amy, a fashion graduate whose portfolio came second in the country

JAN/FEB22

at Graduate Fashion Week, manages everything ‘brand’ and ‘design’.” Amy continues: “My degree in design gives me the foundation to create and market all capsule collections rolled out over seven seasons. It’s also fantastic to have Leanna on board. She started modelling at 13 and fell in love with all things fashion, which led her to study fashion design and textiles for two years at Northbrook College before going to the Fashion Retail Academy in London.” Leanna says: “Since investing in the business and joining the management team in 2019 I’ve enjoyed spending much of my time in London in my role as Brand Director, acting as the eyes and ears for NOVO down south.” NOVO’s collections don’t focus on ‘trends’. Amy explains: “Instead we focus on classic silhouettes, precise tailoring and simplistic shapes enhancing the wearability of the garments. Each piece has a minimal aesthetic and neutral colours. Key knitwear pieces have varying classic colourways to complement all skin tones, meaning there is a perfect shade for everyone. Our pieces are designed by women for women and this is a key focus of our NOVO community. “We aim to design, inform and inspire dressing for the modern woman’s lifestyle, with premium wardrobe essentials that are interchangeable. Through guided style we aim to inspire and educate a more back-to-basics form of dressing. We want our clothes to work harder for our clients. A buy less, buy better approach to fashion.

Each collection is timeless, and comes together through careful curation and love for what we do.” Sustainability is at the heart of what the NOVO team does. Rebecca continues: “We believe in investing in quality pieces and reducing the need to overbuy, which ultimately helps the environment. Whether your priority is quality, versatility, colour scheme, or cuts that flatter your figure, NOVO’s timeless collection has been designed to work with our customers’ needs and to fit their lifestyle.” Determined to follow a journey of responsibility and sustainability, in 2019, the NOVO team stopped using plastic packaging but moreover, they carefully consider production volumes so as not to create increased waste. “We also look to work on using more recycled knit to reduce

some of the waste created naturally with the production process,” adds Amy. “Our long term goal is to continue improving our green credentials and look at ways we, as a brand, can positively promote sustainability and offer a way to improve the lifecycle of our garments and our impact on the planet. “Every piece is created by our in-house creative, women-led team, through their extensive knowledge of what it is to be a woman: work-life balance, and the time constraints of modern life, which inform the pieces which they create. Up here in Durham, we work closely with our manufacturing partners to finalise each sample with quality fabric, timeless silhouettes and attention to detail always in our minds.” Proud of their North East roots, the NOVO team will continue to run the business from their Durham office. Amy says: “As the team grows and the business expands, we hope to also be able to offer creative job opportunities within the North East. Often fashion jobs are seen to be mainly in bigger cities such as Mancehster and London, but we want to champion our independent brand up here.” As the NOVO team look to the future, they’d love to be in wardrobes internationally, and to be conveyed as the go-to brand that’s focused on capsule collections built with core hero products, that are different to the trend-focused high street and fast fashion retailers. Amy concludes: “We’d also love to get our brand into a named department store or online retailer and hope to see NOVO continue to grow and sit alongside and be recognised as one of the best names in the luxury fashion sector.” novo-london.co.uk

A Golden Glow Seeking out go-to products and holy grail treatments for glowing skin, Nicole Wood visits Laser Clinics UK in Newcastle to try out the much talked about LED Light Therapy for herself… Investing in your skin is something I’m a firm believer of. Suffering from hormonal breakouts, sensitive skin and a pesky redness that fills my cheeks, LED Light Therapy was one of the constant answers that would fill my Google searches, and so a trip to Laser Clinics UK in Newcastle was booked. A quick medical consultation form and a skin consultation with the lovely Alana and I was whisked into a treatment room preparing for what was described as a 15 minute holiday. Cosied up on the bed, hair net on and Alana begins my pre-treatment cleanse. Next, a pair of protection goggles are placed across my eyes, slipping me into complete darkness - perfect for relaxing. The light is then placed over my face and I’m left to relax for around 15 minutes. Understanding and appreciating why the treatment was described as a mini holiday, the heat is so delicate, yet tropical enough to feel like you’re basking in the sunshine. To help target my main concern of redness, I opted for Yellow LED Light Therapy which comes with heaps of benefits including the reduction of redness, rosacea, fine lines and wrinkles. All of that, plus it brightens complexion, accelerates wound healing, improves lymphatic drainage, collagen induction and even rejuvenates and hydrates your skin. Think of Yellow LED Light Therapy as achieving your best post-holiday glow in under 15 minutes. While it’s the deepest penetrating medical-grade treatment that Laser Clinics UK offer, it has no downtime and no discomfort whatsoever. Once the light goes off, I’m treated to a few pats of serum and a spritz of multi-active mist - both of which my skin drinks up after the treatment. We finish with a much-needed dose of SPF 50, this is essential in your aftercare post-treatment. I leave feeling radiant already looking forward to my next session.

For optimum results, 4-6 LED Light Therapy sessions at two weekly sessions are recommended. Yellow LED Light Therapy costs £49 per session. For more information, contact laserclinics.co.uk

Classy confidence Embracing volume…

Happy New Year, you lovely people! I don’t know about you, but 2021 almost feels like it never happened! I’m fully aware that as you get older, the years seem to fly by quicker - but come on! That was at the speed of light! Most of you are probably thinking that’s not a bad thing and yes, you’re right. It’s a year we all wanted to see the back of but it does still feel like we’ve been robbed of a year. Anyway enough of me bleating on about getting older and on to more positive things and altogether happier vibes. What better time is there to start feeling optimistic and confident as we look towards a new year,

38 luxe-magazine.co.uk

a fresh start and new beginnings? Do people still make New Year's resolutions? I’m not sure everyone still does. It definitely used to be a thing - with gym memberships going crazy, vegan diets, dry January and promising to give yourself more time for you and your loved ones. Of course, all of these things sound great, but I do feel that the past two years have given a lot of people a whole new perspective on how they live their life, with many of us, 'post-lockdown', continuing to generally live a healthier, happier life. We definitely all had time to think about what’s important. We now make time for friends and family, and we make time for us. I think generally we’re all more aware

of what ‘being happy’ means. In short you really don’t need to make New Year's resolutions, but rather make promises to yourself as to how you want to live your life. It’s a fact. Looking good and feeling good go hand in hand. How you look on the outside does incredible things for your self-esteem, self confidence and self-love, which in turn will make your day-to-day life a much happier and more positive place to be. Our gorgeous model here has rich chocolatey semi-permanent colour throughout. Her hair has been blow-dried with volume before waving out to create this utterly gorgeous, relaxed look that oozes confidence and class, and we love it! Michael x

FEELING GOOD

zen Becoming

Think about how your life feels on a day to day basis. Does it feel good to you? Is there balance? Or are you living your days feeling mostly stressed, up a height, switched on and nervous? Nicole Wood discovers a whole new outlook on the importance of wellbeing after chatting to founder of My Zendays, Nicky Thackray…

40 luxe-magazine.co.uk

Speaking to Nicky Thackray comes at a time in my life when I need it the most. Recently being diagnosed with a chronic health condition, I have found myself putting a lot of pressure on myself to be the person I used to be and live the life I used to live. This is the negative and stressful mindset that the wonderful Nicky aims to shift. After a successful corporate career and feeling like she had it all, Nicky was exhausted, burnt out and fed up, yet had no idea why or what was wrong. Following a three month quest, learning about meditation, mindfulness and wellbeing, she decided to launch My Zendays. “I teach people how to calm their mind and boost their happiness so they can get much more joy and fulfilment out of their life. As far as I’m concerned happiness, peace, love and joy are the things we need more of in our lives. I’m on a mission to help people step up their self-care, learn skills to support their overall wellbeing and happiness, help to achieve a greater sense of balance and peace, and inspire and

empower you to live your life the way you’ve always wanted to,” says Nicky as she begins to explain what My Zendays is. As I’m chatting to Nicky, I can’t help but open up about my own struggles in terms of managing my energy with my chronic illness and she floods me with advice I will now carry with me: “Learn how to manage your energy. We all only have so much and once that energy has run out for the day, it’s run out, we can’t borrow more. We need to learn to give that energy to the right things and the right people. Energy vampires exist and it’s about surrounding yourself with things and people who make you feel good. There are people you’ll spend time with and come away and think ‘my god, I am exhausted’. People will, and most of the time will do it without realising, but will suck the energy out of you. Surround yourself and fill your time with people who make you feel good, light, happy and giddy.” Our conversation digresses as we begin to discuss the pressure of society and the world we live in. “There’s a lot of pressure to succeed and to please people and to tick boxes off of someone else’s checklist to feel successful

(usually parents!). When you get the job, buy the house, marry the person, have the children and have everything you think you always wanted, you can still feel miserable and wonder what’s wrong with you. I’m here to tell you that there’s nothing wrong with you and in fact many people feel the same way. We’ve been programmed to live this way. We spend our time stressing and worrying and trying to be the best version of ourselves and that’s too much pressure. We need to focus on the smaller things, what is it that makes us truly happy, what is it that fulfils us and makes us smile. “Things like journaling, deep breathing exercises and techniques that put your mind and body into this relaxation response are something we aren’t taught, we don’t learn about these things at school, yet it’s something so simple we can incorporate into our daily lives. It’s become ‘normal’ for us to lead busy lives and accept that stress is normal. You need to recondition your nervous system for relaxation because after all these years, especially those who are super busy and high flyers, we’ve basically conditioned our nervous system to be switched on all the time. There’s no

JAN/FEB22

FEELING GOOD award for overworking. Being busy doesn’t win you a badge of honour. You need to train your body to be able to relax. When I reached the ripe old age of 40 and was suffering from awful burnout, high anxiety and super stressed, it would have been extremely handy to know that even the way you breath can stimulate that relaxation response.” she continues. Increasingly fascinated by Nicky’s upbeat energy and endless positivity, I ask her how one would begin to focus on putting their wellbeing first to which she guided me on the Four Interior Empires: mindset, heartset, healthset and soulset - all of which are based on the work of Robin Sharma. “The first is mindset. Your mindset is basically your mental world, your thinking patterns, your thinking habits, how you interpret stuff and your ability to learn. Are you being kind to yourself? Are you learning and growing? Are you feeding your brain with positivity?,” Nicky begins to explain.

I teach people how to calm their mind and boost their happiness so they can get much more joy and fulfilment out of their life “Ask yourself what am I watching on TV? Am I watching motivational stuff that helps me feel like I can conquer the world or am I watching negative or damaging shows which will create a negative mindset? You need to be aware of your internal dialogue. So many people, especially women, are so hard on themselves and create a hostile environment within themselves e.g. ‘I must not fail’, ‘what will people think of me’ and it’s so catastrophic to think this way. Become aware of the narrative you’re telling yourself and make a conscious decision on turning down the volume when needed. Change the station and start giving your brain the message that it doesn’t have to be afraid. Tell yourself ‘I can do this, I will try this, it doesn’t matter if I fail, I’m not scared.’ “The second is your heartset and this is your emotional world. For example if you’ve been through a really painful relationship and you still haven’t got over it or if something terrible has happened in your past and you haven’t dealt with the trauma of it, then it’s about being able to accept you haven’t come to terms with this and say to yourself do I need to go hire a therapist or life coach? This is about your emotional

JAN/FEB22

world and whether or not you’ve been able to process the difficulties and the challenges that you’ve been through in your life in order for you to create the space and move on and create the future that you want to achieve,” she continues. “The third is healthset which is your physical world. Are you getting enough water, are you exercising, are you sleeping enough, are you sweating - because you need to sweat and detoxify yourself so this is the importance of looking after your physical world. And finally, the soulset and this is your spiritual world. Sometimes this can scare people off because they think ‘oh well I don’t consider myself to be very spiritual’ but the question is if you watch a sunset or a sunrise do you feel moved? Does it affect you or do you watch it and think ‘oh that’s boring’? The chances are it’s going to move you, it’s beautiful and that’s an example of how you’re connected to the world you live in. This allows you to explore other connections too, such as the people in your life and even yourself,” Nicky explains passionately. How do you know if this is you? “You have to think about how your life feels on a day-to-day basis. Does it feel good to you? Is there balance? Or are you living your days feeling mostly stressed, up a height, switched on and nervous - which sadly most people are because we’re running around in the world trying to get everything done without ever getting anything wrong, so worried about getting things perfect and that’s an exhausting way to live. “One of the biggest realisations in my own life, that I now help to facilitate in other people's lives, is deciding to change your relationship with failure. The thought of failure and the fear of getting something wrong can totally paralyse you and it can keep you feeling really small and retracting rather than expanding into your space and your life. I always told myself I couldn’t leave my job and start my own business because what if it goes wrong and I fail, what would people think? But I realised that I’d rather get to the end of my life and have tried and failed than never have tried and never have lived. And I'm so glad that I did. “So, go ahead and fail at something like baking a cake, feel what it’s like for things to not be perfect and go your way. It doesn’t matter, it affects no one, you will survive, get comfortable with the idea of things failing. Doing this allows you to see that

failing doesn’t define who you are, the world still goes on and you can always try again. “Even if you have failed or you’ve gone through something painful or something bad has happened, try and think of it as everything happens for a reason and that you can pay that experience forward. What happened to you then has given you the ability to help someone else. When something happens and it feels rubbish at the time, you’ve actually learnt a lot about yourself, you’re further forward than

when you dared to try it and in the future someone else may be able to benefit from your experience,” says Nicky. A little apprehensive but really want to focus on looking after your own wellbeing this year? Take a look at Nicky’s Kickstart sessions. This epic three-part video training series is the perfect introduction to new skills and practises that will help to calm your mind, boost your happiness, and supercharge your life. WELLBEING FOCUS

Into the woods

Nicole Wood becomes at one with nature as Jen Grange takes her on a guided Forest Bathing session into the wilderness

As clichéd as it might sound, I have decided to set myself some goals to focus on this year, not quite new year's resolutions, but rather intentions for me to work towards. One of which is making time to look after my own wellbeing. For little miss people pleaser, overthinker and natural worrier over here, I wasn’t quite sure where to start. For me, self-care looks like running a hot bubble bath, popping on a face mask and whiling away the hours getting lost in a good book. And while that will always be part of my routine, I wanted to focus on something bigger - a better way of clearing the head. Journaling, meditation, exercise or whatever else it may be, wellbeing looks different for everyone. How one person decides to indulge in a little self-care is going to differ from the next. However, one thing that kept appearing was reconnecting with nature, so when the opportunity presented itself to try out a Forest Bathing session, I jumped at it. Forest bathing or Shinrin-Yoku is a natural wellbeing therapy originating from Japan. It literally translates as ‘forest-bath’, meaning to bathe in the forest atmosphere or take in the forest through our senses. Research shows that being in nature for just two hours per week can have a significant benefit to our health. Forest bathing takes this one step further, with mindful and sensory invitations to connect with nature and reflect on our experiences. It is a perfect

42 luxe-magazine.co.uk

opportunity to relax, unwind and connect with the natural environment. It allows us time to switch off from the pressures of life and simply be surrounded by the healing energy of the forest. Engaging in sensory experiences allows us to connect with nature, connect with our intuition and find inspiration in the natural world. Forest bathing can be enjoyed at any time of year and is a wonderful way of tuning in to the seasons and cycles of nature. If you don’t have access to a forest, you can achieve similar benefits by taking a walk in your local park. A beautiful and holistic experience to benefit both physical and mental health and wellbeing, the scientifically-proven benefits include: reduced stress (lower levels of cortisol), improved mood, boosted immune system functioning, reduced blood pressure and pulse rate, increased heart variability meaning the circulatory system can respond well to stress, increased ability to focus, accelerated recovery from surgery or illness, increased energy levels, and improved sleep. “Phytoncides are essential oils emitted by trees and plants to protect them against germs and insects. They are particularly prevalent in pine forests. Inhaling phytoncides boosts our immune systems by increasing the number of frontline immune defenders called natural killer cells (NK cells) in our bodies, giving us resilience against disease, including viruses and colds,” explains Jen.

Unaware of what to expect, I was a little sceptical at first, but as soon as I’m greeted by Jen’s friendly face, I immediately relax. A quick medical consultation form and we’re ready to go. A short walk and we arrive at our forest bathing spot where we start with

some slow deep breathing, becoming aware of how the body feels at that moment. Once we slow down our thoughts, we move on to the body with a slow mindful walk. As we do so, I’m encouraged to notice movements in my body: contraction of muscles, an awareness of balance, how the body adapts to the terrain underfoot. As we walk I start to become aware of the sensations of the ground under my feet: pressure, lumps and bumps, hard, soft, uphill, downhill.

WELLBEING FOCUS

Forest Bathing is a perfect opportunity to relax, unwind and connect with the natural environment... a beautiful and holistic experience to benefit both physical and mental health and wellbeing

Next, I’m invited to sit, close my eyes and focus on the sounds surrounding me as Jen guides me through a relaxing meditation while encouraging me to listen to the sounds near and far; birds singing, leaves rustling in the wind, cars in the distance. Doing this allows all of the senses to open up. The smells of the forest surround me as I take in deep breaths of the fresh air. I open my eyes and, as if for the first time, notice the trees, birds and sky above me. As we continue to walk through the forest, Jen invites me to explore my curiosity, to examine the details and to feel the nature around us. We pick the leaves from the ground, feel the air on our skin, run our fingers across the roughness of the bark and feel the different textures. As we meander our way down towards the lake, Jen invites me to look up. We’re so used to living full steam ahead, in our phones and in a rush - this part allows us to switch off, slow down and appreciate the natural beauty of the world we live in. When we reach the lake, we’re invited to pick a spot that grabs our attention and spend 15 minutes reflecting. “You may like to sit by a tree or lie down on the grass. Look up at the canopy and

JAN/FEB22

the sky. Watch the branches move or the clouds drift by. Notice the pace of nature? Is it peaceful and calm or wild and windy? How does this make you feel? If your body wants to, try some slow stretching, becoming really aware of being in your body,” Jen explains before leaving me to it. We conclude our forest bathe with a friendly chat and a mindful cup of tea to reflect on the experience. Research has shown that the immune boosting effects from one session of forest bathing can last up to a week. A whole weekend of forest bathing can boost the immune system for up to one month. You can develop your own forest bathing practice by scheduling in some time each week to be in and connect with nature. Keep an eye out for Lakeland Wellbeing’s future forest bathing events and retreat days, which often align with the solstice and equinox. Lakeland Wellbeing has other therapies to support your wellbeing, including Reiki, which can be a wonderful way to enhance your connection with nature. lakelandwellbeing.co.uk Image credits: Rob Grange Photography

LOVE YOURSELF

SUNSHINE STATE OF MIND Coach yourself new habits and beliefs that will help create long-term sustainable change in 2022 and beyond, with our Luxe life coach, Teresa Peters… Did you know it usually requires a minimum of about 21 days to effect any perceptible change and embed a new belief or habit? Following plastic surgery it takes about 21 days for the average patient to get used to their new face. When an arm or leg is amputated the ‘phantom limb’ persists for about 21 days. People must live in a new house for about three weeks before it begins to “seem like home”. These, and many other commonly observed phenomena tend to show that it requires a minimum of about 21 days for an old mental image to dissolve and a new one to form. So now you know why it takes an average of 21 days to create new neural pathways and new habits and beliefs. Try the six step challenge…

STEP ONE Decide what your ideal 2022 looks like I invite you to choose an area of your life or work to focus on. Every action we take is motivated by a thought or belief. We can choose to continue or let go of old habits and beliefs and reframe these with new ones. Our old beliefs may have served us well and made us feel better, yet is what we are thinking true? Between every action and response there is a thought. Consider this: imagine you could change your reaction by managing your thoughts and respond differently. Are these rules you’ve made for yourself no longer serving you or your business?

STEP TWO Clarify what your unwanted habit or belief is Emotional addictions release the same chemicals as physical addictions. So, whether you want to stop thinking you’re not clever enough, stop getting angry or if you want to stop eating cake, the same principles apply. It will feel uncomfortable at first because we are no longer in a state of homeostasis. Our brain will always find ways to make sense of something even if it’s not true: “I’m not clever so I have to prove myself ”. This current belief we hold on to must be celebrated because it has helped to protect us over the years and made us feel better. Such beliefs can drive us to success. Ask yourself, are you willing to let go of this belief and form a new habit or belief?

STEP THREE Write down your new habit or belief Explore new beliefs and habits to replace the old ones. Do some wild-writing and ‘ink what you think’ no matter how bonkers it may seem? Who will it serve? Who else will benefit? How will I know when it’s working well for me? How can I measure it? Find a belief or new habit that works for you. A new mantra that you can practice every day. Write your belief on a post-it note, say your mantra as you look in the mirror or add reminders in your mobile calendar. Practice - Practice - Practice!

44 luxe-magazine.co.uk

STEP FOUR Create an invisible shield and find support We need to remove any triggers. We can focus on keeping away from the triggers. Or we can tie in a new want with a need. If you want to go to the gym you could tie this with a need, like listening to a podcast or audiobook. If you have changed your mantra from ‘I’m not clever’ to ‘I am the expert’ then try to stay away from those people who make you feel ‘not clever’ and practice your mantra using an imaginary invisible shield. Only allow positive thoughts to reach you and deflect the old beliefs from the invisible shield.

STEP FIVE Practice self-compassion This is very important. Be kind to yourself. Some of us may have heard the saying that we need to put on our own oxygen mask first before helping others. Give yourself time and be present in the moment. Breathwork and daily exercise can also help with this. Give yourself a big hug and look at yourself as if you are your own best friend.

STEP SIX Measuring success = motivation Consider a reward for each milestone. Journal your wins or note them on your phone. Reflect on these after 21 days and notice every small change. Small atomic habits lead to long term change.

SUMMARY Whatever you decide to do in 2022, consider that changing emotional or physiological habits and beliefs will create long term sustainable change. You will BE rather than just DO. After all we are human ‘beings’ not human ‘doings’. Enjoy coaching yourself through these six steps. A life coach enables this process quicker than what you can do alone, but ensure your coach is accredited and they should offer a free session so you can get to know them first!

Practice selfcompassion. This is very important. Be kind to yourself... Give yourself time and be present in the moment... Give yourself a big hug and look at yourself as if you are your own best friend

We wish you a wonderful 2022, welcoming new habits and embracing new beliefs!

GET GLOWING

Skin saviours

It’s time to get serious about skincare. Put selfcare to the top of your priority list this year by giving yourself the gift of glowing skin. Elysia Fryer heads to The Natural Enhancement Clinic for the ultimate feelgood facial

It goes without saying the new year is a perfect time for a bit of soul searching. It marks new beginnings and encourages us to set goals for the months ahead. This year, as I navigate my life as a new mum, in order to ensure I can be my ‘best me’, I’m challenging myself to schedule in some ‘switch off’ time. Something I’m sure many of us will admit, whatever it is we’re juggling at that time, can be pushed to the bottom of the priority list. And what better way to start than with a skin boosting facial? That little bit of TLC we need now, more than ever. Yoga and meditation is part of my daily and weekly routine, but skincare is something I admittedly slip in and out of. I’m often left feeling overwhelmed by the number of ‘must have’ products out there. I have no problem finding exciting new oils, moisturisers and serums, but what I’m missing is the expert knowledge - knowing exactly what is required to feed my face with goodness after a busy festive season of stuffing my face (quite literally!) with makeup, multiple skincare products and, of course, all of those sweet treats and cheese boards. When invited to try a detoxifying treatment at The Natural Enhancement Clinic, I jumped at the opportunity. A chance to give my skin the little bit of love it needed. The lovely Donna and Eryn at The Natural Enhancement Clinic in Washington are not only incredibly talented and welcoming, they really know what they’re talking about and this comes across in everything they do from their website, to the booking process

JAN/FEB22

and of course, chatting to the ladies as they bring your treatment to life in the clinic. Their passion lies in educating people on the products they use, the procedures they practice, and how both of those things can work wonders for the mind, body and soul. I booked in for the Enhanced Aqua Cleanse (90 minutes - £85) with Vitamin Infusion (2ml - £60) and it was the perfect tonic to give my winter skin a nourishing boost. Individually, the treatments work wonders for blocked pores, dry skin, lines, dark circles and scarring; but together, they’re

a force to be reckoned with. The aqua peel is designed to give you a flawless glow, gently stripping away any nasties from the skin, leaving the face feeling and looking fantastically fresh. If, like me, you’re looking for instant results without any discomfort or abrasive treatments, it’s the perfect fix, improving texture and restoring elasticity almost instantly. Combining the power of deep cleansing water peeling with good-for-you ingredients, microdermabrasion and a variety of different prong heads and acids, it’s the ultimate MOT for the skin. Whatever they’re working with - whether it’s scars, wrinkles, blackheads, stretch marks, dark circles, or simply skin in need of a bit of hydration, this deep facial cleanse moisturises, removes dead skin cells, rebalances sebum and restructures tissue. Donna starts with a water-based peel with sequential acids. Using a water jet, the cocktail of hydrating products work as a gentle vacuum, removing impurities and stripping the skin back to ensure it takes in everything it needs from the treatment. The next step is an infusion of hyaluronic

acid, deeply moisturising, right from the pores through to the skin’s surface. Finally, using a mesoporatic handpiece, the Aqua Cleanse restructures and oxygenates the facial tissue by penetrating the skin’s layers to build the skin back up using hyaluronic acid and dreamy serums that ensure you leave the clinic with that ‘new you’ glow. The clinic itself is a breath of fresh air. Bright and beautifully sleek decor with plenty of light shining through. It’s the perfect feel-good retreat with the service to match. It’s a warm and welcoming place where no question is a ‘silly’ one. I leave having learnt a lot about skincare, but also about my own skin. A fresh-faced me with a shopping list of dreamy Dermalogica products to add to my daily routine, and a bank of new knowledge on the science of skincare. The bang-for-your-buck beauty boost we all need this year. The Natural Enhancement Clinic has a number of nourishing treatments available; the first step is to take some time for yourself and let the experts lead the way. naturalenhancementclinic.co.uk

ARTISTIC FLAIR

North East sculptor Graeme Hopper has clients ranging from royalty to celebrities, local authorities to forestry commissions and arts councils to universities. When he’s not creating stunning pieces of art out of metal, he’s encouraging children with special needs to get creative. He recently took some time out of his busy schedule to tell Claudia Robinson about his fascinating career… Having started working in the industry, learning how to weld and work with steel, Graeme served a traditional four year apprenticeship as a blacksmith and in 1990 established his business in his design studio and forge in Crook. His striking metal creations are dotted around the North East. You’ve probably seen one of his works of art and haven’t even realised it. Perhaps his giant boot or the Millenium bug in Durham’s Botanic Gardens, the Gruffalo-inspired sculptures in Hardwick Park or the huge steel men pushing giant balls of coal up the bank by the Stadium of Light in Sunderland? All of these are just some of a huge catalogue of impressive pieces created by Graeme. “I love working with the local community on projects like these,” says Graeme. “I’m working on a piece at the moment for the main roundabout in Chester-le-Street to create something that tells the history of the town. We’re engaging with children from three local schools to create a five-part piece that represents the Lindisfarne Gospels, the viaduct, cricket and so on. The children drew their ideas which we

JAN/FEB22

then took inspiration from and developed them to create the final installations. It’s great because it gives the children a sense of achievement and they feel very much part of the project.” Another piece in Chester-le-Street that is particularly special to Graeme is a sculpture in Riverside Park. He worked with the stillbirth and neonatal death charity, Sands, to make a sculpture to honour those who have lost a child. “The sculpture is in the shape of a teardrop, featuring a tree and butterflies. Parents and loved ones of those affected by the death of a child are able to visit the sculpture and attach a lock with the child’s name engraved on it, as a lasting memory. This was a very emotional project to work on and we are planning to create a similar piece in Cambridge too.” Greame’s works of art are scattered across the country. Lincoln Police Headquarters is home to another sculpture where people are invited to go and contemplate, while, most notably, one of Graeme’s mushroom sculptures is an official part of Prince Charles’ art collection installed in Highgrove gardens in Gloucestershire. Greame explains: “Prince Charles and Camilla came to visit Hemlington Lake in Middlesbrough where >>

we’d been working for the Clean Becks Campaign to transform this huge, rundown area into a beauty spot. I was asked by the police not to offer him anything but I thought I’d take my chances and presented him with the mushroom saying ‘this is for you and Camilla’. He graciously accepted it and I was later told by an aide that it had become part of the royal collection. It’s a huge honour and obviously something I’m very proud of.” Not only has Graeme’s work enabled him to brush shoulders with royalty but he has also made a sculpture for actress Glenda Jackson, and has done some TV work, including featuring in Small Town Gardens and The Real DIY Show. Another part of his job that he talks about fondly is the work he does with children with special needs. “I have a background in teaching and many years ago did a course at Lancaster University to learn how to work with special needs children,” explains Graeme. “This was a fantastic experience and enabled me to turn blacksmithing into more of an art and take that into schools. “I adapted a lot of my equipment to make it easy and safe for children to use, so they can bash something on an anvil and create their own piece, without all the blacksmith training. When I first started doing this we could take an anvil and vice into schools, set up in the playing fields and introduce the children to it on site. They got a lot out of it, bending steel, learning what happens when it is heated, how it goes like plasticine - they loved it.

48 luxe-magazine.co.uk

“Now, with health and safety, it’s much safer for the children to come to us at the farm and forge where we have everything set up. So the children will turn up, they can run about, explore our sculpture trail, let off steam, go pond dipping and then we take them two miles away to the blacksmith’s shop where they can get creative. See the sparks flying and really get stuck in. “It’s totally safe, we’ve adapted what we do so that they can take part, in a fashion, and feel that they’re part of the pieces that we make. The children can all make a flower, or a fish each, which I’ll weld and assemble into a garden scene for them to display at their school. I’m not sure who gets more satisfaction out of this sort of work, me or the children!” Greame’s job is certainly varied. One day he’s working with special needs children, the next meeting with people from Durham Botanic Gardens to discuss a new installation and the next working on a private commission. And 2022 looks like he’ll be even busier. “We have a few plans already in place for the coming months. I’m working with a primary school in Durham to create a dragon-related installation for Gilesgate Park, as well as another piece for Riverside Park in Chester-le-Street and something exciting in Gateshead. Hopefully, as we head into spring I’ll also have plenty more opportunities to work with children here on the farm as there’s nothing I love more than inspiring their creativity.” graemehopper.co.uk

STYLISH CUISINE

Tantalise the tastebuds

Seasonal sensations and a cosy atmosphere, Johnathan Ramsay checks out the most talked about new restaurant in Ponteland

Walking into Eleven you instantly feel the warm, welcoming atmosphere of this uber cool restaurant. It feels cosy but stylish, with local art available to buy hanging on the walls and a great view of the pass and through to the kitchen. As I settled in with a lovely can of Repeater IPA, from Hoults Yard brewers Full Circle Brew Co. (even the beer is locally sourced!), I perused the menu that had been promptly

52 luxe-magazine.co.uk

placed on my table. It was a seven dish tasting menu, including dessert and a cheese course (at the additional cost of £9) all for £59. A perfect way to experience a range of different flavours, appreciating them individually on small plates, rather than opting for one large main. To start it was fermented potato bread and cultured butter. You can’t get any simpler than bread and butter, but let me tell you, this was the most delicious bread I have ever tasted. It was so light and airy absolute melt in your mouth deliciousness. Who knew bread and butter could inspire such delight? Next up was courgette, ewe’s curd and nasturtium. This little dish, served up in a bowl around the size of my fist, was an absolute sea of green. Fresh leaves perched upon the green purée that covered the ewes curd. It was a cold dish that really did cleanse the palette with its refreshing flavours. The ewe’s curd was delightfully soft and added a tangy, milky flavour that perfectly complemented the courgette.

The final starter-style dish was sweetcorn, berkswell and marjoram. The flavours were incredible! The sweetcorn was deliciously smokey and the nutty notes of the berkswell cheese were a match made in heaven. Now onto the main dishes. I began with the beetroot, roscoff onion and mushroom broth. This horseradish garnished dish was absolutely bursting with seasonal flavour. Like all of Eleven’s dishes, this one unassuming plate was home to an array of fresh flavours, tantalising textures and seasonal colours. My final main dish was the coco di paimpol beans, cucumber and green sauce. Once again my plate was filled with healthy green and brown colours and fresh juicy slices of vegetables. The creamy white beans had a nutty, flowery flavour that paired excellently with the invigorating green sauce. After tucking into my cheese course of full-bodied Devon blue and quince it was time for dessert! Or so I thought, instead I was treated to an off-menu item. It was described as a burnt peach granita with grated fennel pollen.

It looked and tasted like a sorbet, with a sweet almost aniseed-like warmth to it. Certainly one of the tastiest and most innovative palate-cleansing dishes I’ve ever had. And finally, for dessert, warm chocolate mousse, delica pumpkin and hazelnut. This was one of my favourite dishes of the night, when is dessert not a highlight? This was special. The chocolate was more like a sauce than a mousse. It was the beautifully rich blanket hiding the unlikely, but perfect combination of soft, again almost sorbet-like pumpkin and delightfully crunchy chunks of hazelnut. Like the rest of the menu, head-chef Danny Land had managed to fit a number of bold flavours and textures into one unlikely parcel, all complementing each other perfectly and taking you on that rustic, seasonal flavour journey that Eleven is quickly becoming known for. This cosy and atmospheric restaurant oozes personality, character and has that warm homely feeling – much like its food. elevenponteland.co.uk

FOOD HAPPENINGS

HOME COMFORTS with chef Chris Baber

A book launch, an old Spanish favourite and exciting foodie events!

MY WORLD >> It was a busy and exciting end to 2021 for me. In the last issue of Luxe I mentioned a project I’ve been working on for many months and hopefully you’ll have seen or heard that the cat is finally out of the bag - I’m publishing a recipe book in April called Easy: simply delicious home cooking. We announced the launch towards the end of the year and I was genuinely blown away by the support and feedback I received. About thirty celebrities shared and commented about my news on social media, including Gordon Ramsay, Paddy McGuinness, Tom Daley, Alan Carr and Vick Hope. The book got to number two in the charts, simply based on pre-orders - I honestly can’t believe it. I think one of the reasons it’s already proving so popular is because the book is full or proper, normal food, made easy. There are no trends or fads, it’s just what people want to cook and enjoy eating. Based on the reaction we decided to release an ebook straight away, which features six recipes, one from each chapter, to give you a taste of what you’ll get when the book is released. Loads of people have downloaded it from my website - chrisbaber.co.uk What I’m loving most about that is that people are sharing the dishes they’ve made on Instagram, it’s so great to see. I’m really enjoying promoting the book too, with appearances on Radio 2 with Alex Jones and lots of other interviews. It’s been great to finally announce the news to you after keeping it a secret for so long.

food is an eclectic mix of Malay, Indian and Chinese cuisine and I can’t wait to find out more about it. We’ll be heading out on a food tour, with live cookery demos. I’ll be documenting what I find on Instagram and hope to create some great recipes, inspired by the trip but using British ingredients, when I get back.

INSPIRED BY THE SEASONS >> Despite the dark nights and the weather being pretty dreary at this time of year, much of the ingredients currently in season contradict that mood with fabulous colour. Beetroot, apples, watercress, aubergine, red cabbage, spring greens and squash are just some of the vibrant produce which are at their best right now - so fill your plates with healthy, colourful food to brighten up your days.

ASK CHRIS >> If you’ve got a question to ask Chris, whether it’s a recipe you’d like to see, information about his cook-a-longs or recommendations for restaurants in the North East, please get in touch via his Instagram page. #AskChris instagram.com/chrisbaber

FOODIE HAPPENINGS >> I’ve got some fabulous events in the diary for the beginning of 2022. All being well, on 26 January I’ll be hosting a special night with Francesco Mazzei at his beautiful Italian restaurant, Fiume, at Battersea Power Station. This event will raise much-needed funds for the mental health charity, Mind. We’re really looking forward to creating some delicious dishes, marrying up the English garden with an Italian kitchen, cooking the best of British produce in an Italian way. Think beetroot carpaccio, Welsh lamb ragu and spiced poached pears - my mouth’s watering just thinking about it! In February I’m hoping to travel to Singapore to work with the country’s tourism board who are showcasing their food. Singaporean

Q.After eating lots of meat over Christmas, I always try to find some nutritious vegetarian, winter-warmer recipes for the family in January and February. Can you suggest something I might not have tried before? A.Pasta is always a crowd-pleaser but if you’re trying to steer away from the usual spag bol, lasagna or carbonara, why not try this recipe for roast butternut squash and ricotta pasta. It’s so simple. Dice the squash, drizzle with oil and season with salt and pepper. Roast for about 30 minutes until golden. Mash it up, stir through some ricotta cheese (as much or as little as you want depending on how creamy you like your sauce - safe in the knowledge that ricotta is really low in fat so a great post-Christmas cheese). Season to taste and add some lemon zest if you like. Stir this sauce through your favourite cooked pasta and enjoy!

TRY THIS >>

Easy Prawn Paella with Garlic Mayo Serves 2 / 30 minutes

If you fancy trying one of the recipes from my new book, give this easy prawn paella a go. It’s a fuss-free one-pan wonder – so much flavour with very little effort. That’s what one-pan cooking is all about. The little garlic mayo is dead simple and really sets it off! For the paella 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil 75g chorizo, diced 2 onions, diced 1 large red pepper, diced 2 garlic cloves, chopped 350g paella rice 1 tbsp smoked paprika 950ml fish or chicken stock 400g raw king prawns 350g frozen peas, defrosted 1 small bunch of flat leaf parsley, chopped 1 lemon, juice of 1⁄2, 1⁄2 cut into 4 wedges Salt and pepper

For the garlic mayo 2 tbsp mayonnaise 1 garlic clove, crushed or grated Squeeze of lemon juice

1. Mix together the mayo, grated garlic and a squeeze of lemon juice and set aside. 2. Heat the oil in a large non-stick frying pan over a medium heat. 3. Fry the chorizo, onion, pepper and garlic with a pinch of salt and pepper for 5 minutes until the onion has softened and the oils have been released from the chorizo. 4. Stir in the rice and paprika and cook for a couple of minutes, coating each grain of rice in the oil. 5. Add the stock, increase the heat and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat to medium–low, cover loosely and simmer for about 15 minutes, stirring now and again. If it becomes very dry, add a splash of water. 6. Stir in the prawns and peas and cook for 5 minutes or until the prawns are pink. Stir in the parsley and lemon juice. 7. Serve with a wedge of lemon and dollop of garlic mayo. Recipe extracted from Easy by Chris Baber (Ebury, £16.99), published 7 April 2022.

GARDENING GURU

Savouring the seasons WITH KAREN PHILLIPS

Blood Orange & Pistachio Granita

New Year’s Resolutions evoke strong feelings but simply saying “I resolve to…” makes it so much easier to succeed. Why not resolve to grow a little something to eat in 2022 that will save a heirloom variety? Or maybe make the effort to choose seasonal produce where possible? The first months of a new year can surprise us with bright sunshine on crisp winter days. The rush and haste of December and Christmas are long gone and time ticks more slowly for a while, providing the perfect opportunity to take stock and find pleasures in smaller things. Colour can boost our moods and it’s well known that the different colours of fruit and vegetables contain different vitamins; so feeding our souls with blood red oranges, glaucous blue green leeks, nearly black Kale ‘Cavolo Nero’ and using up the last of the stored purple potatoes in comforting Colcannon nourishes us during these darker, colder months.

GROW YOUR OWN >> Now to our second resolution of growing something from seed. In my opinion, there are few nicer activities than spending a cosy evening indoors with a colourful online catalogue of vegetable seeds with evocative names like ‘dragon purple carrot’, ‘chocolate locoto chilli’ or my favourite ‘lemon drop chilli’; or perhaps the variegated Castelfranco chicory which is like a lettuce that a child has painted red blotches onto! My favourite seed companies that promote the continuation of heritage seed varieties are The Real Seed Company (realseeds.co. uk) and Seeds of Italy’s 1929 endangered Heritage Veg Club (seedsofitaly.com). If you join the latter, you’ll receive three seasonal deliveries of heritage and endangered vegetable seeds that ideally need our support to survive. World seed banks are good as an insurance policy, but the best way to preserve these wonderful varieties is to grow them. If the small number of producers left cultivating these varieties make a profit, then they will continue to produce these varieties. Whatever you choose to grow will bring out the ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ child in you when you plant your seeds and see the magic of new life appear. If you fancy getting stuck into gardening in earnest but don’t know where to start then our Virgin Gardener or Beginner’s Veg courses will set you off on the right road, and you’ll depart brimming with confidence and with seeds sown for the season ahead.

It’s hard to believe that this colour is natural! Blood oranges appear in the shops for such a short season in January that if you blink you’ll miss them - you are forewarned to grab them when you can so you can stock up the freezer with this delight. Full of Vitamin C, with a hint of sweetness to curb those post-Christmas sugar withdrawal cravings. Ingredients 135g sugar 8 cardamom pods, bruised 5-6 blood oranges (about 250ml juice) 1 ⁄2 lemon, juiced Unsalted pistachio nuts, chopped Method Make a simple syrup by placing the sugar in a saucepan with 150ml water, bring to a simmer and stir until the sugar has dissolved. Add the cardamom and grated zest of one blood orange, along with all the orange and lemon juices and bring to the boil. Remove from the heat and leave with the cardamon to infuse until cool. Strain through a plastic sieve into a container suitable for the freezer – the flatter the better (so those take away containers can have a second life). Freeze for about an hour then, using a fork or a small whisk, break up the ice crystals around the outer edges of the tub and stir into the middle. Do this a couple more times – the more you break up the crystals the smoother your granita will be. Once frozen you can scoop the granita into decorative glasses and top with chopped pistachios, simply because they are pretty, but really any leftover nuts from Christmas can be chopped to decorate.

Luxe Pooch Q&A DOGGY DOWNTIME >> If my parents are at work I’ll sneak onto the kitchen table and fall asleep. It has a great view and I can see what’s going on outside. At bedtime I like to jump on the bed for a little while and have some cuddles, but then jump down and make a bed in my Dad’s dressing gown.

Hello Luxe readers, I’m Chester, the three-year-old ginger Zuchon from Houghton Le Spring. I’m part Shih Tzu and part Bichon Frise which means I’m oh-so adorable and no one can say no to my cute little face. As a therapy dog I’m very calm, gentle and loving. I can be a little bit cheeky when I want to be and stealing socks is a favourite hobby of mine which has given me the nickname ‘Sock Bandit’. LUXE WALKS >> The beach, any beach, they’re all my favourite. I love running across the sand and dipping my paws into the water, not too far though or else I’ll need a bath when I get home.

HOUND HABITS >> Some would call me a diva because I only drink water fresh from the tap - sometimes I’ll even whinge in the bath until the water is turned on. Cute, I know but my Dads don’t think so when it’s the middle of the night. PUPPY PAMPER >> I love going for a full blow dry, it’s the best. I love it so much that sometimes I fall asleep. DOG’S BEST FRIEND >> I love both of my Dads but I do have a favourite (Shhh). He looks after me like no one else can, we are really close and I follow him everywhere and I mean everywhere! FONDEST DOGGY MEMORY >> I love being outside in the garden. It's a great way to see all my friends as they walk by.

POOCH’S PERFECT DAY OUT >> I love spending the day wild and free exploring in the likes of The Pennines, The Dales or The Moors. Anywhere you’d find sheep, that’s my favourite kind of place.

PUPPY A-LISTER? >> Monty Don, he’s cool and calm just like me. I love watching him on Sunday mornings in bed with my parents.

STYLISH LIVING

LIFESTYLE CONFIDENTIAL with Kate Rose, founder of lifestyle brand Tutti & Co

I love a new year and all it brings with it. New adventures, challenges, experiences and the chance to try something new; new places to visit and new products to excite

Wearing…. Once the Christmas party outfits are stored away, I like to have a good wardrobe sort out and plan outfits for the new year. I often travel extensively in the first few months with work and like to be prepared with options that are comfortable and stylish, that can be layered, dressed up and down. My first luxe pick is the Isabel Marant ‘Drogo’ herringbone wool blend jacket which has a laid back elegance - loose fit with dropped, layered shoulders. It looks great with jeans or a tailored pair of trousers. Team with sneakers or a pair of chunky boots to create an effortlessly stylish look. My second luxe pick is where style meets comfort. I love a pair of white sneakers, in fact I live in them, so I couldn’t resist the ‘Lauren’ high top sneakers by Chloé. Made from supple white leather and outlined with the label’s signature scalloping. The logo-stamped pull tabs ensure they’re easy to slip on and off. Classic and comfortable, they feel smart enough to wear for a business meeting paired with a dress, trousers or smart jeans, and look equally good with loungewear for that relaxed weekend vibe. netaporter.com

Loving…

Accessorising…

My new bathroom. It is finished in a micro cement finish which has the most gorgeous natural texture yet is super easy to clean and has no grout to keep on top of. I have wanted this finish since I visited the most beautiful hotel in Palma, Finca Serena, and I’m really pleased with the outcome. dallamano.com

With the current wintery weather, my wardrobe still very much consists of cosy knits, jeans, boots and generally lots of layers. However, I do like to add a few new accessories to dress up an outfit, and my picks for the season ahead are these gorgeous pearl necklace and earrings. Team with a cashmere knit for effortless style. tuttiandco.com

LUXURY INTERIORS

New year, new decor Around the House Furniture is the North East-based luxury homeware brand bringing gorgeous styles to your home. Nicole Wood checks in with Louise Stockton, the creative brains behind this blossoming business…

If you’re like me and spend endless hours scrolling through Pinterest searching for home decor ideas, then you’re going to fall in love with the Wynyard-based furniture business, Around the House Furniture. When I stumbled upon this local business during one of my many late night scrolls seeking out interior inspiration for my new home, I just had to know more. It’s a busy Wednesday morning and I’m sitting down ready to chat to owner Louise Stockton. Three minutes in, I am already in awe of her passion and ambition, forty minutes later and I’m officially obsessed with the brand. “Interior design has always been my passion, I actually graduated with a degree in it in 2011. After working in show home design for a year in Newcastle, I actually ended up falling into the beauty industry. I wanted to work for myself and I really enjoyed it for seven years until Covid hit in 2020 and my business had to close for a while due to lockdown,” Louise begins to explain. “The business is something I actually started in 2012 after I finished uni and had been working in Newcastle. I ran it for two years, but I just don’t think it was the right time for online selling. Social media wasn’t as big as it is now and there wasn’t really such a thing as influencers. It was really difficult so I started doing the beauty and when I got really busy with that, my furniture business got put on the back burner. During the first lockdown in March 2020 my little girl was around four months old and for most people they would have seen this as the perfect opportunity to chill out and relax, but for me I started to go a bit stir crazy. I was getting bored of just

66 luxe-magazine.co.uk

sitting around and I felt a little bit like, well what am I going to do? So instead of twiddling my thumbs, I started it up again. I feel like now is the time. Instagram is huge now for home accounts and influencers etc. and all of that ties in perfectly with my business,” she continues. Having already grown a fantastic reputation as a luxury brand selling high quality furniture, Louise tells me a little bit about how her business works and how she uses her eye for interior design to pick her stock: “I work with a lot of great suppliers who I have carefully selected. I pick out a selection of products that suit the brand, which I know are on trend and that people will love. When it comes to sourcing products, I find it best to attend the furniture trade shows. I'm attending the one in Birmingham in January and I’m really looking forward to it. At the moment I work with around six suppliers, but I’m actually going to be looking to add a couple of new ones too. Attending the shows is a great

JAN/FEB22

LUXURY INTERIORS

way to check the quality of a product. One of the shocks I got when I went to my first trade show on my own, was how bad the quality was for one of the suppliers I had been listing - don’t get me wrong it looked beautiful and it was gorgeous on the outside, but I pride myself on being a luxury, high-end brand and the quality of the inside and the sturdiness of the product just didn’t match up to this. This is something you can’t tell online, which is why I like to see the suppliers I’m stocking at these trade shows. When I’m looking for a range, I’m looking for exceptional quality too. I want to know that when I’m sending something out to a customer, they’re going to get a luxurious, high quality product.” With a new year, like many of us, Louise is thinking about switching up her own home decor. Discussing the impact a good clean, fresh lick of paint and an accessory switch around can have as the new year rolls around, I take the opportunity to get the expert’s opinion on interior trends and tips for 2022. “My living room is a nice deep blue colour, but I’m looking to change it this year. I want to switch out the dark shades in our home for a more neutral palette. I always like to invest in staple pieces of furniture that will work with any colour. It’s not sustainable to completely redecorate each time the

seasons change. However, if you have a neutral colour scheme, you can often make small changes with seasons. For example, you could change the colour of your cushions, curtains or throws. So in the summer you might have pastel pink cushions and then in the winter swap them out for a deep blue. If your walls and floors are a neutral palette, this can work easily. Try swapping out some accessories too,” Louise adds. “I think in 2022 we’ll see a lot of neutral looking homes, a very clean look with lots of texture. We live in a new build, but we’ve transformed it into a modern cottage vibe by adding panelling, and I think this is going to be something we’ll see a lot of this year.” There’s no doubt that Louise’s business is going to go from strength to strength and she already has many exciting plans for the future. She’s looking to scale up her business and expand her knowledge, partly through a business mentoring programme she’s currently taking part in. Louise also has plans to employ her first member of staff by the summer and in a constant drive to become more sustainable she’s launching a ‘plant a tree’ scheme with every purchase. It’s clear that this is just the start for Around the House Furniture. aroundthehousefurniture.co.uk

FAMILY ADVICE

Little moments

Why emotional first aid can be equally as important as physical...

Well, that’s another year over. I hope you’ve all had a positive start to 2022. In January I always put some time aside to take stock of what has gone before and what is to come. One of my favourite family traditions is our memory jar. On New Year’s Eve, we empty it out and look at all of the trinkets and keepsakes we have accumulated over the year, reminiscing about the wonderful experiences we have shared. This year, however, it was also a raw reminder of the people we have lost and the challenges we have been through. The last couple of years have been very difficult for all of us and although children are naturally resilient, some may also be feeling the strain of these unsettling times. Trauma unfortunately is a fact of life. Growing up, our children may feel unbearable heartache, grief and pain when they have to deal with the loss of a grandparent for example, or a divorce, bullying, moving schools or a serious illness. But more ordinary moments can cause just as much distress. I’m talking about a bump to the head, being in a fender bender, falling off a swing or having a routine medical procedure. Trauma can come in all shapes and sizes. Children who are traumatised can withdraw, become anxious, lose their confidence and can sometimes display behavioural problems. The good news is, as parents and care-givers, we can

JAN/FEB22

prevent our children from carrying these scars with them into their adult life. This doesn’t mean that we take away all risk; in fact, we shouldn’t. Children thrive in age-appropriate, challenging environments. But what we can do is really attune to our little ones (and big ones!) and help them process and progress through the pain. Usually trauma will happen when an intense experience shocks a child, leaving them feeling helpless and vulnerable. If a child doesn’t process what has happened, their body ‘keeps score’ and it remembers the traumatic experience; the effects actually live in the body, specifically the nervous system. Therefore, it is critical that we help them deal with both the physiological impact as well as the psychological consequences. I’ll give you an example. If a child receives a minor bite from the family dog, they immediately react through the part of the brain known as the amygdala. This activates the fight, flight, freeze or fawn response. When this response is activated, the body is flooded with stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline, the heart beats faster and breathing becomes more intense. There are many more uncomfortable physical sensations we may feel when our amygdala is activated. All of this is an automatic survival response to the threat (i.e. the dog) and the protective energy is supposed to be used up during the traumatic event. However, if a child is unable to run or fight

back because of their size or vulnerability, then this survival energy stays stuck in the body. Most children freeze in these moments but the ‘play dead’ response is only supposed to be used as a last resort. When children ‘freeze’ they feel disempowered and weak. This can lead to a higher chance of suffering from unresolved trauma. In this particular case, the child may always have a fear of dogs and it may trigger physical reactions every time they see or hear a dog. Neither their body nor their mind will forget the fear they had in the moment, even if they can’t articulate it. So, what can we do, in practical terms, to administer emotional first aid to our child in these moments? If your child falls off their bike or has been sick at school and is inconsolable, you need to regulate yourself first. In the moment, you may feel upset or even terrified but you need to embody a confident and calm presence. I know; easier said than done but it is crucial that you are your child’s rock. So, slow your breathing, speak in a low, measured tone and ground yourself. Children are extremely sensitive to our reactions. If you are hysterical, the likelihood is that they will begin to panic too. Secondly, assess the situation. Ensure that your child is safe but also look for signs of shock (e.g. pale skin, glazed eyes, shaking). Reassure your child that they are now safe but they should still rest until their body returns to normal. If they will let you, gently hold them or at least put an arm around their shoulder. The power of gentle touch is incredible. Try not to shake or rock your child too much as this can disrupt the natural healing process. The next step is to reconnect your child’s mind with their body. In moments of trauma, there is a disconnect between our physical and cognitive elements, which is another element of the survival mechanism. When the shock wears off, we can then ask them about sensations in their body. This

mindfulness activity will get them to focus on one thing at a time and will get them to tune in to any current aches or pains. Ask your child a few specific questions about the type of pain (strong/weak), where it is (tummy/side of head) and if it is there all of the time or if it comes and goes. The questions will activate the thinking part of their brain and deactivate their fear centre. The next stage is just observing your child. Don’t feel the need to talk incessantly, shush or constantly reassure them verbally. Embrace the moments of silence and just watch them. See how they are. You can tell if they are feeling slightly better because their breathing will soften, colour will return to their cheeks and they will look less agitated. One key element in helping your children heal after trauma is to validate their reaction to the event. As adults, all too often we diminish their emotional response. I would suggest saying something like this; “I understand. You feel embarrassed because you were sick in front of the class. You’re safe now. I’m here.” Allow them to express all of the emotions they have so they don’t begin to repress them. Validate their physical reactions by saying; “I can see you’re shaking and your heart is beating fast. That’s normal. We just have to wait a while for it to settle.” If our children feel like their responses are natural, they will find the trauma easier to process. Don’t underestimate the power of rest. Deep discharge of the residual energy usually happens during sleep, so try to prioritise this with your child, even if they are desperate to get up and going. As humans, we have a natural ability to heal so we have to trust in that process. Finally, after the event, help your child to make sense of what happened. They need to feel a sense of ownership over the event to help them feel empowered, so encourage them to re-tell what happened through words, pictures or play. We don’t need to go into graphic detail but getting them to express their thoughts about the trauma will help them. So, the next time you’re reaching for a bandage or driving your child to the emergency department, don’t forget to administer the much-needed emotional first aid too. Good luck!

CHECKING IN WITH: RICHARD SUTTIE >>

Luxe catches up with Richard Suttie, Director of Golf at Macdonald Linden Hall Golf and Country Club… September 2020 I’ve been very fortunate to be in a position where Macdonald hotels have been investing in their golf resorts. I’ve been working with our Head Greenkeeper, Ross Young, to enhance key areas of the golf course to make Macdonald Linden Hall the best standard it can be. Feedback from members and visitors has been fantastic regarding the excellent condition of the current golf course and we hope to continue our hard work into the 2022/23 season.

TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR JOURNEY TO LINDEN HALL? I’ve been working within the golf industry for 18 years. I originally joined the team at Linden Hall back in 2019 as a golf sales person. I then started to help on the golf course as a greenkeeper a few days a week for a bit of overtime, which I absolutely loved and this helped improve my knowledge within the business even further. Since taking over as Director of Golf in

JAN/FEB22

WHAT IS SO GREAT ABOUT THE CLUB THERE? Linden Hall’s 18-hole championship course offers something for golfers of every level and the panoramic views of the North Sea and surrounding woodlands make it a truly picturesque course - enhanced further by the hotel’s luxury facilities. What makes the club great is our people, and this year in particular my members have been very supportive. Any time I’ve asked for a volunteer squad to come and help on the golf course with

anything, I’ve been overwhelmed by the sheer amount of people that have turned up to help! ANY UPCOMING EVENTS FOR THE DIARY? We have a winter series of opens booked in the diary for 21 January, 25 February and 25 March. In April, we will welcome our new 2022/23 captain with a “captains drive-in” day which is usually a very popular event.

HOW IS THE COURSE LOOKING THIS WINTER? Storm Arwen did cause a lot of damage to our golf course with fallen trees, however, my golf team and volunteers have been fantastic these last few weeks and the golf course is back in good condition again. We continue to invest in the course and facilities at Linden Hall, and look forward to welcoming new and returning members in the new year.

TEST DRIVE

AT THE WHEEL

with Bob Arora

A worthy investment The Lexus NX is compact luxury at its finest...

I’m embarrassed to admit I’ve never actually owned a Lexus, I do however remember putting a deposit down on the IS 200 when it was launched. I’m sure the delivery date was put back a few times and, for whatever reason, I became annoyed, and eventually I got my deposit back. In hindsight it would have been a good introduction to the brand, and maybe I was a tad hasty! When I did eventually drive the car, I remember it being a great driver’s car and I remember wishing I hadn’t cancelled my order! Lexus fast became leaders in reliability and customer service, they took the all-important JD Powers Survey by storm and they topped the table, beating every other manufacturer. The range was expanded and the LS was joined by a myriad of models, and, like every other manufacturer, SUV’s also joined the range. I was invited to the preview of the latest NX. At a quick sideways glance it’s not that easy to spot the difference between the new and old car. The designers have added creases and curves all over the car, they’ve also added a signature to the car’s boot and again copied Porsche and other competitors. Over 95% of the car’s exterior is new, and the car is also 20mm longer. The car has a massive grill like Audi and BMW, the rear has a full length light like most Porsche’s and it works. The NX looks much sportier

72 luxe-magazine.co.uk

then the Q5, X3 and the XC60; in F Sport guise the car’s competitors don’t have a look in as it really looks the part. Toyota has been one of the earliest pioneers of Hybrid technology and the Prius was every A Lister’s car to be seen in Hollywood’s latest car to be seen in is now a Tesla, it just shows you how times have changed. The new NX is the brand’s very first plug-in Hybrid, they’ve been very late to join the party. Saying that, they’ve been the experts in self-charging cars for over 30 years and this new car hopes to find the company plenty of new homes. The previous NX was one of the their best selling cars, and I’m pretty sure this one will sell like hot cakes for Lexus. In electric mode, the car can travel up to 40 miles on a single charge, it can travel up to 83mph on electric alone, it takes just under three hours to fully charge the car and you also have the petrol engine, therefore you shouldn’t have any range anxiety. The car is powered by a 2.5lt engine along with one electric motor at the front and one motor at the back, which helps make the car four-wheel-drive. The car produces 309 bhp and it’ll hit 62mph in 6.3 seconds. One area where the car really excels is its class leading economy. Most drivers should expect to return around 47 miles per gallon which is very impressive for a high riding and quite a heavy petrol engine car. The base NX is priced from £38,000 to

£58,000 for the range topping model, all models have great spec as standard: heated front seats, adaptive cruise control along with driver aids and reversing camera, all go to make this a very well spec car indeed. When you step inside the car, you notice the beautiful interior, a big screen dominates the dash, Lexus has managed to reduce the button count by half. Thankfully the joystick and touch pad, which were favoured by Lexus, have been ditched and the infotainment system is now accessed via touch screen, which is much easier to use, especially when you are on the move. The system is light years ahead that of the previous car’s, the graphics and general usability of the system make it a real

pleasure to use. There are USB ports all over the cabin, along with wireless charging for your phone, as with the BMW iX, the NX has a switch to open and lock your door. It looks like this feature is fast becoming the norm instead of a traditional handle! Passengers sitting in the rear of the car have plenty of leg and headroom, the boot also has about the same amount of space as its competitors. Lexus done a great job with their first plug in hybrid, with all of the tax benefits that befit a Hybrid, it’s really a good time to take the plunge and buy one of these great cars. Definitely a worthy investment. Car supplied by Stoneacre Lexus, Silver-link.

PURE ELECTRIC

A pleasure to drive Bob Arora gets familiar with the BMW’s third all electric model...

My earliest memory of BMW advertising was the tag line Ultimate Driving Machine, another advert that still sticks in my mind was for the 7-Series. A 50p piece was placed standing on the engine, the car was revved, and the coin didn’t fall which was to show you just how smooth the engine was. I’m sure I tried to replicate the advert using my Dad’s Ford Cortina, as you’d imagine before the engine went past tick-over, the coin fell! Thanks to all of the clever advertising, I couldn’t wait to buy my own BMW, it was a used, high-mileage company car, but I still remember just how well built it was compared to my Mazda 626. Back in those days, driving a BMW was a real status symbol, unlike today where a Mondeo is more of a rare sight compared to the 3-Series. The car I’ve had the pleasure of driving this month is the new all electric iX, it’s the third all electric car they’ve launched. The first

74

luxe-magazine.co.uk

was the quirky looking i3 and then came the iX3 both of which I absolutely loved. Quite a lot of the technology on this car will filter down to the forthcoming i4, 5 and 7-Series too. The car has a very distinctive look which grew on me by the end of the review. I have to say; I thought it was a strange looking car at first. The kidney grills aren’t actually air vents anymore, the driver aids are all hidden behind them, if they actually get scratched, they can repair themselves in either direct sunlight or by using a hair dryer. It sounds like black magic, but it actually works, and it is amazing. The car’s headlights are very funky and slim which helps give the car a sporty look, optional laser lights are also available, and they are supposed to be excellent. The rear of the car actually reminded me of the Aston DBX, which is definitely no bad thing, the rear lights are again small and very cool looking. My car was fitted with the optional 22’ alloys and they helped fill the arches, thanks to the air suspension the ride was

PURE ELECTRIC

The rear of the car actually reminded me of the Aston DBX, which is definitely no bad thing, the rear lights are again small and very cool looking very smooth indeed. The car has frameless doors and electric door handles again both very cool. At the moment there are only two models to choose from and they are priced from £70K and the current range topper costs £95K. I drove the iX40, which had a range of about 270 miles, the iX50 has a larger

JAN/FEB22

battery which helps give the car an additional 100-mile range over the base model. The iX50 has a top speed of 124mph and it dashes to 62mph in 4.6 seconds. The car weighs two and a half tonnes, which is super impressive. When the car is fitted with its standard 20’ alloy wheels the car’s drag factor is 0.25 which again is very slippery indeed. The X6, which I thought would be very drag efficient, is actually 0.36 and therefore more like a brick in the wind tunnel. The designers have used carbon fibre all over the frame of the car. When you open the car doors you can see the carbon fibre, using this makes the car much more rigid, but I can only imagine it’ll be a very expensive car to repair in a crash. As I said previously, the exterior grows on you, the car’s interior however is just in a totally different league to its competitors. The car is dominated by a beautiful screen

- it really oozes quality. The dash with its lack of buttons again looks a million dollars. BMW’s latest version of i-Drive is very simple to use, and it is also much more user friendly as everything is controlled via a rotary dial and buttons, that are etched into a lovely piece of wood in the middle of the cabin between the passenger and the driver. My car was fitted with the optional crystal rotary dial, volume button and gear selector, all of which are definitely a bit blingy, but they reminded me of an Aston Martin I once drove which had a lovely glass key. The seat buttons are now on the door like most Mercedes and another unique feature is the door is opened via a button instead of a conventional handle; just another feature that makes the car feel very cool and space age. The full-length panoramic roof can be dimmed to control the amount of light that comes into the cabin. To help keep the car

warmed, the designers have decided to warm the car’s panels, which definitely helps keep the car warmer. The front BMW badge pops up to reveal the filler for the windscreen water and the rear badge incorporates the self-cleaning rear camera. Talking of that, the picture quality was really very good, and it puts the cameras on much more expensive cars to shame. I really enjoyed my time with the car and you really change the way you drive when you are in an electric car. To save the battery, it’s quite normal to drive with the heater off and using the brake regeneration becomes second nature as it helps charge the battery while you are driving. This car is a good introduction to the world of electric power - factor in the current excellent tax benefits and it’s definitely a good reason to embrace the future. ULTIMATE MOTORS

Exceptional care for an iconic car If you’re lucky enough to be the proud owner of a Ferrari, or are even just an adoring fan of the luxury supercar, you’ll understand how carefully these precious vehicles need to be looked after. Not just when they’re safely tucked away in their heated garage, but more importantly, when they’re being serviced and repaired. It’s crucial that specially trained experts, who live and breathe this Italian car of dreams, take care of it.

76 luxe-magazine.co.uk

For many years any Ferrari owner in the North East had to get their vehicle serviced in Edinburgh, Leeds or Manchester but the launch of the JCT600 Ferrari service centre and Ferrari approved showroom at Silverlink Business Park in Newcastle has changed all that. The 500 square metre Ferrari centre features a 270 square metre workshop with three service bays, while the remaining space houses a stunning showroom where customers are able to view up to ten Ferrari approved, previously owned vehicles. From the moment you pull up at JCT600 Ferrari you can expect a flawless and memorable experience, with every member of staff being passionate about what they do and experts in their craft. Paul Williams, Brand Manager at JCT600 Ferrari has loved these powerful, graceful cars for as long as he can remember and is proud to be a major part of an exceptional new service that means owners across the North East can now get their performance car looked after closer to home. He says: “We have a huge catchment area from the borders to the west coast, right down to Teesside and North Yorkshire. We already have a number of customers who used to take their vehicles to Manchester, Edinburgh and Leeds, who have welcomed the fact that they can get their Ferrari serviced here now. “We offer the full package here, so we’ll collect and deliver our customers’ cars on fully secured, covered transport. If customers prefer to drop off their vehicle, they can

enjoy a coffee in the Ferrari lounge while they watch their car being worked on through a huge window, whether it’s a full service, MOT or having their winter wheels put on.” Paul says that sometimes, particularly with longer established customers who have owned a Ferrari, or sometimes multiple Ferraris, for a number of years, they like to get up close and personal while their cars are being worked on. “That’s no issue at all,” continues Paul. “We also recently hosted an event with the Ferrari Owners Club and some of those attending with their 15 or even 25-year-old cars wanted us to get them up on the ramps so they could have a good look, and chat to the technicians. We’ve had some amazing cars in here including F40s, 288 GTOs, real classics that it’s a privilege to work on.” Paul explains that Ferrari owners appreciate the importance of taking their cars to a reputable, experienced service centre, not least to ensure they hold their value. “People don’t do many miles in these vehicles so you can have a car that’s five years old, but it’s only done two thousand miles. They use it once or twice a month, for a few months of the year. But this is a luxury, globally recognised brand, the biggest in the world, so it’s important to use a Ferrari specialised garage, it’s part of the investment. “Someone who is buying a Ferrari wants to know where it has been, they want to meet the technicians who’ve serviced it. We have two master technicians on site who will speak to customers when they come in, and that’s after they’ve had well-informed

conversations with the customer service team. You’re not buying a lump of metal, you're buying the whole experience, the heritage, the outstanding customer service, the luxury, the five star package.” The service at JCT600 Ferrari is impeccable and highly sought after. Some of their customers live hundreds of miles away, and have specialist service centres close to where they live but still choose to send their cars to Newcastle. “We have customers that we’ve sold to down south, who continue to get their cars serviced here. Just this week we delivered a car back to London. We have a customer in Cornwall who comes to us because of the satisfaction and service that we give - he goes past practically every Ferrari dealer in the UK to get to us.” The technicians at JCT600 Ferrari have many years’ experience working on these outstanding cars. They’re at the top of their game. Every day they do further training, visit other sites and have an open line of communication with the manufacturers in Italy. Paul says: “The care required to look after these cars is different to anything else. You have everyday cars that you can leave on the drive, go away for a week then jump in them and drive away. Ferraris have to be

nurtured and cared for, they have to be kept on trickle charge when they’re not being used, ideally indoors and with covers. Our service team is always on hand to give owners the best advice on how to look after their prized possession at home too.” On a personal level, Paul says he feels lucky to work with these desirable cars every day. “For me, it’s the luxury of the brand and the heritage. I’m never going to be fortunate enough to own one so having the opportunity to work with the most recognisable brand in the world, every single day, is a pleasure.”

You’re not buying a lump of metal, you’re buying the whole experience, the heritage, the outstanding customer service, the luxury, the five star package

“We can’t thank Paul and his team enough for looking after us with our first Ferrari. It really helped with trying the demonstrator cars and the team were so well informed and able to answer all our questions. Ferraris are such special cars and every time it starts and barks into life it brings a smile to our faces.” Brad and Joanne
