Shining a light

Luxe checks in with Sophie Gould, Education and Training Lead at the Headlight Project to talk tough topics, community action and trailblazing suicide prevention education across the Tees Valley

Suicide is a difficult and deeply emotional topic, but it's one that the Headlight Project is tackling head-on across the Tees Valley.

The charity, founded in memory of Russ Devereux, is working tirelessly to break the stigma around suicide, offer vital support to those affected by it, and provide preventative education to save lives.

Sophie Gould tells us more about the work the charity is doing and the importance of community involvement.

What is your role at the Headlight Project?

I am the Education and Training Lead at the Headlight Project and my role involves educating the community to work to remove the taboo surrounding suicide and to open the doors for important conversations to be had.

I work collaboratively with schools, colleagues and businesses across the Tees Valley to help create ‘Suicide Safe’ environments. Our mission is to reduce the number of deaths to suicide in the Tees Valley. We are a local charity concerned with local people and we believe that through education we can save lives.

What inspired you to work with the Headlight Project and how do you find being part of the team?

After working in the education sector within the Tees Valley for the last 14 years, I highly prioritise the importance of positive mental health to allow young people and adults to thrive and achieve.

I am passionate about promoting mental health awareness and providing support to those in need. After losing a family member to suicide I can truly understand the trauma and devastation that this can cause. The Headlight Project is an incredibly positive place to work and as our preventative training suggests, we are here to ‘shine a light’ to the people of our region and to help people see that in dark times there is light ahead.

Why is it so important to ensure preventative education on the topic is available across the region, and are you seeing the benefits first hand?

We hear time and time again from the people we work with, ‘would loved ones have been saved if important conversations had been had and if the people around them had knowledge and education around the signs of suicide and where to find support?’. We work together to ensure our local organisations are suicide safe.

Where do you deliver sessions and why are these places selected?

We deliver sessions across the Tees Valley and work in a wide variety of organisations with a wide variety of people. We have recently worked with organisations across all sectors, from charities and engineering firms, to schools, further education colleges and the NHS.

How do you deliver training in a way that is engaging and informative?

We work hard to ensure our sessions are

interesting and informative and encourage wherever possible a two-way dialogue with participants. We address the misconceptions around suicide through a myth busting activity and share thought provoking statistics and video clips.

What can you tell us about the 5th Wheel Membership and how businesses across the Tees Valley can get involved?

We believe that businesses across the Tees Valley can play a crucial role in our work.

Like the 5th Wheel of the truck, our 5th Wheel Members provide stability to the charity. We simply couldn’t deliver the vital services we do in the Tees Valley without them. And, by joining our 5th Wheel initiative, either as a supporter or partner, an organisation will visibly demonstrate their commitment to the Headlight Project’s mission of raising awareness about mental health and suicide prevention. This partnership also supports a company’s corporate social responsibility goals, helping to make a meaningful impact in our local community.

We are here to ‘shine a light’ to the people of our region and to help people see that in dark times there is light ahead

For more information about our corporate and individual partnerships, please email our team at: getinvolved@headlightproject.org.

What is the most fulfilling part of your job?

The most fulfilling part of the role is when we hear that an individual has asked for support following our preventative work. This is all the motivation that we need to continue our mission to show people that support is out there. I also enjoy working with and meeting such a huge variety of people. Every day, every organisation and every session is different.

Are you involved in any of the upcoming events or fundraisers?

Our calendar is filled with activities and fundraising events that encourage people to enjoy the outdoors and try something new. We had blue skies and a wonderful turn out for our Boxing Day Dip, never before did I think I would end up in the freezing North Sea in December!

What do you do for downtime?

When I am not working, my two sons keep me very busy and I can often be found standing on the football sidelines in the rain! Despite being a dancer when I was younger, I have grown to love football. I support my husband in running the local charity and football club, FC Hartlepool.

And finally, your three luxe things in life? I love anything connected to the sea and in particular our weekly Saturday trip to the local fishmongers Hodgson’s for fresh fish and shellfish. Travel and holidays are a passion of mine and we spent last summer on the French island of Ile De Re which is a really wonderful part of France with endless sandy beaches and a rustic charm. My black cockapoo Romeo keeps me active and walking every day; walks with him along the North East coast are an absolute tonic.

Navigating life after divorce

Expert family law and divorce advice from

Divorce is often considered one of the most stressful milestones that people may experience.

Lives can change dramatically postseparation as couples shift from navigating life together to handling finances and parenting issues themselves, and it can be a struggle.

Getting the right professional support from the outset can help to mitigate these issues by trying to resolve them during the divorce process whether amicably through

mediation, or through the courts. Divorces can be particularly sensitive when there are children involved so communicating well during the process will help to ensure both parties understand their opinions on different issues, so that there are no surprises and potential for further disagreements later down the line when co-parenting.

Choosing the right professional support can help to make the process smoother and ensure that you come out of the other side in a strong position to tackle your new life even when there are complex property and financial assets involved.

Last year the number one family law team in the Northeast, Silk Family Law, joined forces with full-service firm Irwin Mitchell bringing Silk’s existing expertise hand-inhand with Irwin Mitchell’s wider private client, corporate and personal injury services, creating a unique offer to clients.

The highly experienced team of 22 family law experts has an enviable reputation for dealing with all aspects of separation, divorce, civil partnerships, pre-nuptial agreements, and children issues.

They’re specialists in dealing with complex financial issues, including business assets, farming businesses, trusts and pensions, as well as family law cases with an international element.

The firm’s clients include high net worth individuals, business owners, sports personalities and people in the public eye and those who hold assets internationally.

Ian Kennerley, a Family Law Partner at Irwin Mitchell, said: “Divorce can be a time of great uncertainty for couples and our job is to help guide them through the process as smoothly as possible. Some separations are amicable while others can be more hostile

THE CRAFTS CORNER

with Sara Davies

Entrepreneur and queen of crafts, Sara Davies, brings you a step-by-step guide to her latest craft projects...

Spring is finally here and I for one am thrilled! I love this time of year because the flowers are starting to bloom and the weather is getting that little bit warmer. And, it just so happens that one of my favourite holidays is at this time of year - Easter!

I really enjoy experimenting with different types of Easter-themed crafts and I think that these bunny treat bags are one of my simplest but cutest creations. I’ve also made this gorgeous trinket dish because Spring is a time for getting organised and this is the perfect place to keep those everyday pieces of jewellery!

Bunny treat bags

You will need...

Brown paper bags

Scissors

Some chocolates or other Easter-themed treats!

Ribbon

Glue gun

To create...

1. Take a brown paper bag and cut out a ‘V’ shape at the top, this will create the two ‘ears’.

2. Next, fill the bag with some easter goodies!

3. Take a length of ribbon and tie it around the base of the ears, tight enough so that it cinches the bag.

4. Finally, use a glue gun to adhere a white pompom to the same side as you’ve tied the bow - this will create the tail. If you don’t have any pompoms you can use a cotton wool ball instead!

5. Create multiple bunny treat bags and use them as favours for your Easter table or a sweet treat for friends and family!

Air dry clay trinket dish

You will need...

Air dry clay

Rolling pin

Pencil

Sharp knife

Clingfilm

Bowl - the deeper the bowl is, the deeper the dish

Fine grit sandpaper

Acrylic paints

Paintbrush

Metallic gold pen for detailing

To create..

1. Use the rolling pin to roll out the air dry clay so that it’s approximately ¼” thick.

2. Draw the leaf shape into the clay, you can either do this by drawing your shape freehand with a pencil or alternatively, you can find a leaf outline online. Simply print it off to the size you desire and use this as a template.

3. Take a sharp knife and cut out the leaf shape.

4. Next, line a bowl with some cling film then carefully lay the clay inside. The deeper the bowl is, the more curve that the finished dish will have.

5. The clay will take some time to dry. Once you see that the inside of the dish is starting to dry, carefully remove it from the bowl then place it upside down to ensure it dries and hardens all the way through. This process could take up to 48 hours.

6. Once the dish is completely dry, sand away any rough edges with a fine grit sandpaper.

7. Next, it’s time to paint the dish. I used an acrylic green metallic paint then covered the edges with a metallic gold pen.

8. Set it aside to dry.

9. Finally, add your jewellery or accessories and voila! You have a lovely trinket dish to add a touch of tropical style to your dressing table.

Capturing time

How a birthday tradition and spontaneous conversation sparked an unlikely friendship between photographer Gary Walsh and Norton local, Erik Feddersen…

When photographer Gary Walsh stumbled across Erik Feddersen taking a birthday selfie on Norton High Street, neither of them knew it would mark the start of a heartwarming tradition. Elysia Fryer discovers how one spontaneous snapshot led to a bond that celebrates the simple joys of life.

It was a crisp March morning in 2019 when Gary Walsh, camera in hand, spotted an elderly gentleman standing boldly in front of house number 81 on Norton High Street. Intrigued, he stopped for a chat. That gentleman was Erik Feddersen, and the number behind him was his age. It was Erik’s birthday - and every year, he marks the occasion by posing in front of the house that corresponds to his age.

“It was such a wonderfully quirky thing to do,” Gary recalls.

“Who needs candles on a cake when you can have a new door number each year?”

Gary offered to take Erik’s picture as a birthday gift. What neither of them realised

was that the encounter would blossom into a cherished tradition, celebrated annually on Norton High Street.

The following year, the world came to a standstill with the Covid pandemic. Yet, when life slowly resumed, Gary and Erik picked up right where they left off. The absence of that 82nd portrait made the 83rd all the more special.

“We’d all been reminded how precious these small moments are - how the little things, like a birthday photo with a neighbour, hold so much meaning.”

Norton, with its vibrant community spirit, has provided the perfect backdrop for these annual portraits. Paired with Erik’s cool demeanour and his determination to enjoy and appreciate the small things in life, this spontaneous project is a match made in heaven for Gary.

Originally from Denmark, Erik moved to the UK in 1959 to learn English, before serving two years in the Danish Royal Navy and eventually settling in the North East. As a hairstylist, he built a successful chain of salons, met his wife, and raised three

daughters - all while retaining a touch of Danish ‘hygge’ in his heart. Hygge is all about finding happiness in life’s simple pleasures, and Gary’s photographs capture that spirit perfectly.

Every 28 March, Erik dresses with care and crosses the street to meet Gary. Their meeting is unassuming yet significant - just the two of them, a door and a camera. There’s no grand plan; they simply go with the moment. It’s authentic, it’s fun, and it reminds them both to slow down and appreciate life.

The ritual has gained a following online.

When Gary shared the first photo on social media, Erik became an instant sensation.

Comments flooded in: ‘He’s a straight-up legend!’, ‘What a badass grandad!’, ‘I want to be him when I grow up!’. Erik’s phone was soon buzzing with messages from friends and family.

While these portraits began as a personal project, one of them recently earned Gary national recognition. The British Institute of Professional Photography awarded him the prestigious Environmental Portrait Photographer of the Year 2024/25. He didn’t tell Erik he was entering the competition, but the image of Erik, pipe in hand, standing proudly on the high street, captured something timeless.

Ask Gary to describe Erik in three words and he answers without hesitation: ‘courageous, charismatic, compassionate’. He’s lived

such a full life, and now, at nearly 87, he’s still got that same sense of adventure and infectious positivity.

This March, the duo will gather once againthis time in front of the local library for Erik’s 87th portrait. Gary hasn’t scouted the exact spot yet but knows they’ll find the right door. They joke about the long-term plan: reaching Blackwell’s Butchers at number 122. That gives them another 35 years of this tradition. Their friendship reminds us all to find magic in the mundane. In an age of fast-paced living and fleeting connections, Gary and Erik’s tradition feels like a comforting throwback to the community spirit the North East is so proud of. The clock might tick on, but for Gary and Erik, time is measured not in minutes but in milestones.

ELYSIA: What can you tell us about your relationship with Erik and how it has evolved in recent years?

GARY: Erik lives opposite my studio, so we’d always wave and acknowledge each other before the birthday portraits started. Now, we stop and chat properly - sometimes for ages. As his birthday approaches, he always asks me what he should wear.

ELYSIA: How have you brought his personality out in the annual birthday photographs?

GARY: Erik’s personality does all the work! He’s full of stories and genuinely enjoys the process. We talk non-stop, and I’ve learned so much about Denmark in the process. I even bought my own copy of Hygge to get a better understanding.

ELYSIA: What was the response when you first shared the images online?

GARY: Incredible! I posted the first one on the Norton Village Facebook Group, and it blew up. Erik told me his phone was going crazy with birthday messages. I think he liked his moment in the spotlight.

ELYSIA: How refreshing is it to be involved in a spontaneous, personal project like this?

GARY: It’s brilliant. No client, no brief - just me, Erik, and a doorway. The creative freedom is so energising. And now there’s this added pressure because people expect that annual post!

ELYSIA: What can you tell us about the award you received for one of Erik’s images?

GARY: Winning Environmental Portrait Photographer of the Year was amazing, especially with a picture from such a personal project. But the real win will be handing Erik the trophy next time we meet.

ELYSIA: Three words to describe Erik?

GARY: Courageous. Charismatic. Compassionate.

ELYSIA: What has this project taught you?

GARY: That the best moments often happen when you least expect them. And that you’re never too old to become a local legend.

ELYSIA: Where will you be shooting this March?

GARY: This year, we’re heading to the library. Number 87, here we come.

Believe and achieve

Mani-Fest, led by the inspiring Mart Tweedy, is the ultimate event for anyone looking to tap into the magic of mindset, manifestation and spirituality. An invitation to unlock a life beyond your wildest dreams…

they can create the life of their dreams.”

For Mart Tweedy, manifestation has not only transformed his life, it has led him to create one of the North East’s most anticipated events of 2025. Mani-Fest, heading to The Glasshouse on 16 June, promises to be an inspiring and immersive experience for anyone interested in personal growth, spiritual healing and mindset transformation.

Born and raised in Durham, Mart’s journey from the corporate world to the world of manifestation and holistic wellness has been nothing short of extraordinary. With a background in the NHS, where he worked tirelessly, Mart found himself at a breaking point a few years ago. It was at that time when he discovered the power of manifestation and the spiritual practices that would soon become his calling. Today, he is a manifestation and mindset coach, a bestselling author, and a podcast host who has created a space for others to tap into their own potential.

“This event is a dream come true for me,” he smiles.

“It’s all about immersing people in the energy of transformation and possibility. We’ve got an incredible line-up of speakers covering everything from feng-shui and crystal healing to the law of attraction and EFT. It’s not just about learning, it’s about experiencing. Attendees will leave with tools, techniques, and a sense of belief that

The event will also feature over 30 holistic traders, from spiritual tattoo artists to breathwork facilitators. These vendors are there not only to share their products and services but to create an environment where attendees can fully immerse themselves in the world of personal transformation. Mart’s path to becoming a manifestation expert wasn’t always clear. In fact, he credits his transformation to a profound personal loss.

“In 2019, I lost my granda suddenly, and it really shook me,” he recalls.

“I wasn’t prepared for the grief, and it left me feeling disconnected from myself. But when the bosses at work sent me to Liverpool for a change of scenery, I met someone who introduced me to crystals, and that’s when everything changed.”

From there, Mart’s curiosity grew.

He began studying manifestation and the art of transforming his own life. He immersed himself in books, podcasts and spiritual practices that would eventually lead him to create Canny Crystals in 2021, his first business.

“I never set out to be an entrepreneur. I just wanted to help people unlock what they already had within them. A lot of it marries up with what I did working in mental health in the NHS.”

The decision to leave his job was not easy, but it was one that allowed Mart to step into his purpose. His podcast skyrocketed to the

The North East is full of inspiring, creative and collaborative people, and I want to celebrate that. I’m passionate about giving back to the place that has shaped me

top of the UK spirituality charts, and his audience grew to 30,000 weekly listeners. Soon, he found himself collaborating with leading experts in the manifestation field, sparking the idea for Mani-Fest.

The inspiration for Mani-Fest came from Mart’s own experiences of transformation through manifestation.

“I’ve manifested so much in my life,” he shares.

“From the money to take myself and my partner to Thailand, to retiring my mum, speaking at Ferne Cotton’s Happy Place Festival - not once, but twice. And then there’s my son. I’m gay, and I never thought I’d be able to have children. But I manifested him into my life.”

Mart’s story of manifesting his son is nothing short of magical. Throughout the pandemic, he visualised a little boy with blonde hair and blue eyes, running down the stairs.

“When we started the adoption process, I kept calling out the name I had been visualising. And then, in January 2024, we received a call. They asked if we wanted to adopt a baby boy - the same name, the same description. It felt like the universe had conspired to make this dream come true.”

For Mart, hosting the event in the North East was non-negotiable.

“I’m from the North East, and this is home for me,” he says with pride.

“Every big event or conference I’ve attended has been in London, so I wanted to bring something to my community here. The North East is full of inspiring, creative and collaborative people, and I want to celebrate that. I’m passionate about giving back to the place that has shaped me.”

In partnership with a Durham-based

company, Mart is also offering a virtual ticket for those who can’t attend in person.

“It’s so important to me that everyone has access to this transformative experience, whether they’re here in Newcastle or elsewhere.”

In addition to the event, Mart is celebrating the release of his new book, Limitless. A culmination of everything he has learned about manifestation, mindset and self-belief, Limitless is a guide for anyone ready to break through their limitations and create a life of possibility.

“Most people don’t realise how much they hold themselves back. Whether it’s fear, self-doubt or limiting beliefs, these invisible barriers can stop us from living the life we truly desire,” he says.

“Limitless will help people identify and break through those barriers with practical steps and inspiring stories. I want readers to walk away not just inspired but empowered to take bold action toward the life they want.”

When asked about his luxe things in life, Mart smiles warmly: “Living in the North East, my little boy, and my Range Rover. It’s funny, because I thought the Range Rover would be the key to happiness, but it’s taught me that true luxury comes from within.”

For Mart, luxury isn’t just about material things; it’s about living with purpose, helping others unlock their potential, and embracing the transformative power of mindset and manifestation.

Mani-Fest promises to be an unforgettable experience - a celebration of possibility, transformation, and the limitless potential within us all.

Breaking limits

From Sunderland to Special Forces, Chris Oliver’s story is one of grit and determination. As a DS on SAS: Who Dares Wins, he pushes recruits to their limits, drawing on his years of military experience. But he’s also a family man with a high-pressure job at Barclays. Chris chats to Elysia Fryer about how he balances it all, stays focused, and never settles for less

As

Chris Oliver is no stranger to pressure. Whether he’s navigating the complexities of the corporate world, leading high-stakes operations on screen, or juggling family life, he thrives in challenging environments.
A man whose roots run deep in Sunderland, his journey is defined by grit, determination, and a drive to push the limits.
a DS on Channel 4’s SAS: Who Dares Wins, his career has taken him from military operations to corporate security and the lights of primetime television. >>

At 42, Chris has established a life that mirrors his ethos: tough, focused and adaptable. With four seasons of SAS: Who Dares Wins under his belt, he is a force both on and off the screen.

Though he now splits his time between Dorset and London, Chris’s journey began in Sunderland, where his life was shaped by a combination of tough love and sportsmanship.

Chris admits that growing up in Sunderland was instrumental in building the mental and physical resilience that has powered his career.

“It’s part of the DNA here,” he reflects.

“Growing up one of five children, there was always a focus on pushing you to do your best, whether it was in school or sports. My coach at Sunderland Harriers would always say, ‘if you didn’t give 100%, it was noticed.’ That mentality stayed with me.”

Running was a big part of Chris’s childhood. As a member of Sunderland Harriers, he learned discipline and perseverance from an early age, key traits that would serve him well in later years.

“I always felt in tune with my body,” he explains.

“That feeling of knowing what you’re capable of, physically and mentally, was something I carried into everything I didespecially when I made the decision to join the military.”

At just 16, Chris left school and signed up for the Marines, the first step in a career that would take him from Afghanistan to Africa and eventually into the Special Forces. Looking back, he is grateful for his decision, though he acknowledges it wasn’t without its sacrifices.

“I did well at school, but I knew I wanted to join the military. I was interested from about the age of 12. The Marines’ advertisement campaign at the time put the emphasis on the person joining, rather than saying ‘come and join, we’re one big family’. It was more, ‘do you think you’re good enough?’. Straight away, that instilled a sense of determination. I wanted to prove I could do it.

“Obviously, joining at the age of 16, I missed out on the opportunities that came with college or university, but joining the military was what I wanted to do.

“I made a few mistakes here and there in the early days - drinking when I shouldn’t have been drinking - but it was all tongue-incheek - they just expect you to look after each other, which builds that camaraderie.”

As we bring our conversation up to date, Chris tells me about his transition from the military to civilian life, and how that journey has led him to where he is today.

“The hardest part isn’t being in the military - it’s leaving it,” he explains.

“You don’t realise until you’re out how hard it is to find your place in society. You’ve spent so many years training and working in a very different environment, and suddenly, you’re faced with a completely new world.

“But that’s where the true challenge lies: figuring out how to apply everything you’ve learned in a civilian context.

Leaving behind a military career after 16 years, Chris turned his attention to corporate security, taking a job with Barclays. Though it’s not an obvious workplace transition, Chris saw similarities in the role and had confidence he could excel.

“There’s a risk element, but instead of going into dangerous environments, I’m now ensuring the safety of senior executives. The pressure is different, but it’s still high.”

From his role in the Special Forces to becoming a key member of SAS: Who Dares Wins, Chris has demonstrated a desire to succeed, regardless of the challenge. The show wasn’t just an opportunity for

television fame; it was a chance to put his own lessons from the Special Forces to the test again.

“The show started before I joined Barclays,” he recalls.

“I was asked to do the first series, but I turned it down. It wasn’t the right time. There was too much scrutiny. Then they came back to me a few years later when I was in the corporate world, and I was a little unsure at first. But when I spoke to my colleagues at Barclays, they encouraged me to go for it. Now, four seasons later, I’m proud to be part of the team.”

For Chris, the show is more than just an entertainment vehicle - it’s a way to share the lessons that shaped his life.

“I feel like I’m faking it more in the corporate world than I am on the TV show, where I’m just doing what I’ve done all of my life,” he starts.

“Being a soldier is the most natural thing to me. I enjoy it, I find it easy, and I don’t question any of my judgement or decision making. There are so many different ways of doing the job in the bank, whereas in the military it’s instant decision making, it’s not sitting and discussing things on a round table.

“The military is about making decisions in highly stressful situations, ultimately to save the lives of the people you’re with, or to have a strategic effect on whatever it is you’re trying to do.”

Chris admits that he works best in chaos, and constant development is instilled in the way he works.

“The show is real for us. It’s a course, not just televised entertainment. We put people through real challenges to see what they’re made of. And it’s not just about getting through the physical tests; it’s about how you cope mentally under extreme pressure,” he explains.

While the show has gained a reputation for its grueling challenges, Chris finds a deep sense of satisfaction in watching recruits grow and develop. He highlights one memorable celebrity encounter from the show, SAS: Who Dares Wins Season 5, with former UK Health Secretary Matt Hancock.

“We really put him to the test,” Chris shares. “We wanted to make sure he explained himself properly. It wasn’t about holding him to ransom, but giving him the opportunity to get his message across without letting him control the narrative.”

Outside the spotlight, family life takes centre stage for Chris. Between long hours working at Barclays and filming the show, family time is cherished.

“It’s absolute chaos, but it’s good chaos. My partner Jasmine and our two kids, Jude and Aria, keep me grounded,” he smiles.

“Family is everything to me. It’s the priority in my life, no question.”

Despite the whirlwind of responsibilities, Chris makes time for his passions. His love for Sunderland AFC remains a constant, with Chris actively involved in leadership mentoring for the club’s first team.

“Football is such a massive part of who I am,” he says.

“It keeps me connected to where I’m from. Of course, it brings a whirlwind of emotions that could drive anyone mad, but as someone from the North East, I wouldn’t trade my passion for it for anything else.”

But family, fitness, and football aren’t the only things Chris values. He’s quick to highlight his commitment to personal health, an element that’s crucial in maintaining balance amidst his busy lifestyle.

“Staying active is essential. Whether it’s hiking, running, or just getting outdoors, it’s about carving out that time for myself. It’s a

non-negotiable part of my routine,” he explains.

The balance between his professional career, public life, and family isn’t easy, but Chris has a unique ability to embrace it all. He’s not just juggling two demanding careers; he’s living a life where the lessons he learned in Sunderland, on the sports track, and in the military, continue to guide his decisions.

“I often think about where I come from,” he says.

“Sunderland shaped who I am, and that’s something I carry with me every day. The resilience I learned from my coach, the grit from my family - it’s all part of me.

“Whenever I’m back up north with my kids, I like to get out and about, catch up with friends, and I love nothing more than taking my son up to the Silksworth running track. It brings back so many memories of being a youngster, turning up on a cold night and pushing myself. For me, that was the start of building up the resilience and mindset that has helped me through life.”

Chris’s story is one of continuous growth. From a boy in Sunderland with big dreams, to an elite Special Forces operator, to a leader in the corporate world and a star on television, his path is driven by an unwavering determination.

As he looks to the future, Chris’s focus is clear: “It’s about always pushing myself and being adaptable.”

Chris Oliver embodies the very essence of resilience. It’s not just about surviving - it’s about thriving against the odds.

Sunderland shaped who I am, and that’s something I carry with me every day. The resilience I learned from my coach, the grit from my family - it’s all part of me

Is the perm back? It may well be - everything comes back around eventually. But fear not, if a less permanent option is more appealing, we’re here to help.

Heated curling tools are better than ever, making it incredibly easy to create showstopping looks at the drop of a hat. If, however, you have some natural curls or waves, curl enhancing creams and a good old diffuser (attachment for your hair dryer, for those too young to remember) will help you to create a truly authentic look.

Celebrities like Zendaya and Jade Thirlwall are already embracing the 80s-trend, leading the way and doing it to perfection.

80s inspired curls aren’t just a hairstyle, they’re a declaration of confidence and individuality. Whether you opt for a natural look or an over-styled wow moment, this trend proves that bold is beautiful, and big hair is here to stay.

Making a difference

Driven by science, inspired by family, and fuelled by a passion for change, Dr Sola Idowu chats with Nicole Wood about his innovative product shaking up the haircare industry...

mission to create products that truly make a difference.

We’re always told the importance of looking after our skin, how we should use certain products for hydration and the necessity of SPF. But when it comes to our hair and scalp, the advice feels far less clear. As someone with an oily scalp and naturally curly hair, I’ve spent a small fortune on haircare products that promise miraclesfrom retaining natural curls without frizz to extending time between washes. Yet, until my conversation with Dr Olusola Idowu, founder of Hexis Lab and Layla & Kays, I had no real understanding of what it takes to actually care for our hair.

As we log on to our Google Meet chat, I’m greeted with the warmest of smiles. Dr Sola, as he prefers to be called, radiates passion for his work. The moment he starts speaking, I’m captivated. A scientist at heart, he has spent decades pioneering beauty innovation, driven by a desire to revolutionise the industry with AI-led product development and sustainable formulations. But beyond the science, Layla & Kays is deeply personal to him - a love letter to his family, his heritage, and a

“The inspiration for our shampoo and conditioner is my daughter,” Dr Sola tells me.

His daughter, a competitive swimmer, has textured curly hair that was constantly exposed to chlorine, making it difficult to maintain its health and condition.

“She was spending 21 hours underwater every week. She was washing her hair four times a day, Monday to Saturday. It was a challenge to manage.”

Determined to find a solution, he applied his scientific expertise to create something revolutionary. The result? A shampoo and conditioner formulated with careful precision, designed to work in harmony with the biology of textured hair.

“A lot of science has gone into this,” he explains.

“It’s a natural-based product, compliant, sustainable, and we actually published the research before launching it. People asked why we were publishing papers on shampoo and conditioner, but it’s important. This isn’t just another hair product; it’s a game changer.”

Dr Sola’s scientific background is impressive. Having studied in Nigeria before completing his doctorate at Newcastle University, he has spent years at the forefront of research, blending AI with cosmetic science. His previous work focused on pharmaceutical applications, but he saw a huge gap in the beauty industry - a lack of true innovation.

“The world needs reformulation,” he says. “We need better products for different hair and skin types, sustainable alternatives, and cleaner ingredients.”

Layla & Kays embraces this ethos, using AI and molecular science to identify the most effective, natural ingredients for hair health.

“Every plant extract contains hundreds of compounds,” he explains.

“We study them at a molecular level to understand which are safe, effective, and beneficial for hair texture, scalp health, and even collagen production. Then we test on

primary cells - real human skin cells - so we can validate our findings without animal testing.”

The result is a carefully and expertly crafted product that has caught the attention of global players.

“We saw the sales data coming and suddenly we had companies wanting meetings with us,” he laughs.

“At first, I thought I’d done something wrong!”

Instead, his science-backed formulations had created something extraordinarya product that was not only effective but also meaningful.

When it comes to haircare, the focus has always been on glossy locks, best styling tools and go-to products, but the key to healthy hair starts with the scalpsomething Dr Sola is passionate about.

“At the end of the day, I tell people to treat their scalp like skin. Give it what it needs, take care of it, and it will take care of you.”

He explains that a high percentage of Black women wear wigs due to hair damage, much of which stems from using the wrong products and society putting pressure on to

But

beyond the science, Layla & Kays is deeply personal to him - a love letter to his family, his heritage, and a mission to create products that truly make a difference

use heat appliances to straighten and ‘tidy’. Layla & Kays aims to change that by addressing the root causes of hair issues.

“When it comes to hair loss, you need to reduce inflammation at the follicle. If your product isn’t managing inflammation, it’s going to cause problems,” he says.

Oxidative stress is another major factor, followed by UV damage - something most people don’t consider when thinking about haircare.

“People in the olden days were on to something and wore hats for a reason,” he explains.

“UV damage is a huge culprit.”

Finally, hormonal changes play a significant role, meaning the hair behaves differently during key moments in people’s lives.

Something Dr Sola is keen to share with people is finding what’s right for you, don’t just follow the latest trend or the ‘in’ active ingredient everyone is talking about because it doesn’t mean it’s right for you. By tackling these four core factors, Layla & Kays helps users restore and maintain healthier, stronger hair.

Layla & Kays isn’t just a catchy brand name; it carries centuries of history. Inspired by the ancient Arabian tale of Layla and Majnun or Qays and Layla, often described as a prelude to Romeo and Juliet, the name symbolises love, devotion, and legacy.

“I wanted something personal,”

Dr Sola shares.

“A name people could connect with, not just another science-driven label. This is a human story.”

While his daughter, Grace, inspired the products, the name Layla & Kays is a nod to storytelling and heritage - elements that make this brand stand out in the crowded beauty market.

But for Dr Sola, this journey isn’t just about great products; it’s about creating change.

“I recently spoke at the House of Lords regarding the Equality Act,” he tells me.

“I heard heartbreaking testimonies - women who were told they wouldn’t pass their bar exams unless they straightened their hair. Women who’ve had their hair grabbed in the street and been told to go back ‘home’. That has to change.”

His advocacy is deeply personal.

“If I’ve done nothing else,” he says, “I know I’ve done this for my daughter. I’ve given her confidence, visibility, and a belief in herself. Now, many more people can wake up knowing they have a solution tailored to them. They don’t need to change or damage their hair to ‘fit’ in.”

Despite his groundbreaking work, Dr Sola is as down-to-earth as they come. He lives in Northumberland, where he finds peace in nature.

“I love the outdoors,” he says.

“I live in a place surrounded by miles of greenery. I enjoy long walks, and when I’m not in the lab, I’m being a dad. I have four amazing children who keep me busy with football, basketball, rugby - you name it!” For someone so dedicated to science and innovation, his outlook on life is refreshingly simple.

As our conversation wraps up, I can’t help but feel inspired. Dr Sola isn’t just transforming haircare, he’s redefining the way we think about beauty, science, and inclusivity. And with Layla & Kays, he’s created something truly special: a brand rooted in love, powered by innovation, and dedicated to making a difference.

Spring forward

Sarah Pike, Luxe’s break-up and divorce coach, guides us through a soulsearching spring

Spring has sprung and it’s time to shine. Move over ‘24 we are grabbing ‘25! They say ‘you are a product of who you surround yourself with’, but I feel differently.

Throughout any break-up, there’s a moment when the penny drops and we realise that over time we may have tolerated attitudes and behaviours way lower than what we would normally choose to accept.

Each of us have different reasons or situations that led us to where we currently are - but one thing remains - we allowed ourselves to lower our standards and tolerate less than we deserve. Now this isn’t the moment to hit the self-destruct/pity me/‘I’m not good enough’ button… quite the opposite. With this school of thought, ‘you are a product of what you tolerate’, comes opportunity. It gives you a chance to review your situation in an analytical sense, which in turn will give you clarity. Clarity gives you choices - so now we get to reset your minimum standard and raise it up a peg or two.

Remove & improve

Now we know what we want to do, how do we do the doing? It’s all about shifting perspective and changing habits. The way we speak to ourselves is a huge factor in this and to move forward, self awareness is key.

Instead of sitting with feelings of resentment at ‘lost time’ or ‘I’ve missed my chance at…’ try flipping it. What did you learn from this? It’s time to re-evaluate where you are and where you want to be - with nobody to put you off your dreams!

Spring is about new beginnings, so grab yourself a journal and write three things in the morning you are grateful for - your children, your home, your friends and family, the fact your dog gave you a big sloppy kiss this morning - even something as small as you made a cracking brew for yourself at breakfast.

Do the same on an evening - three things to be grateful for in the day and three small wins for yourself.

Who even are you, really?

For so long a relationship defined you… so what do we do now?

You grab this opportunity with both hands and start doing the things that fill you with joy, but you put on the back burner to accommodate another’s requirements, that’s what!

Check out Agenda pages and our ‘try

something new’ column. There are plenty of creative, crafty workshops to help get you out of your comfort zone. You used to love going to concerts but haven’t been in years? There are tons of music events in our area!

The zen den

Let’s face it, being out in new groups may not be for everyone - yet. So go inward and see what you can find.

Make time for self-care, such as eating well, exercising, and getting enough sleep. Reconnecting with yourself is an amazing experience. Again, journalling is a great tool. It is very cathartic and helps the decompressing process by getting everything out of your head and onto paper.

Peaceful and mindful exercises like yoga and meditation are also another great example of self care. Retreats are proving to be a popular choice for individuals to take some time away from the world for a couple of days to recalibrate and return refreshed and revived.

Sound bath or breathwork sessions are another top tip for re-centring yourself. Getting out into nature is like food for the soul. Take a long walk along the beach, focus on how deep you breathe, give yourself space to think without any distraction.

All are hugely positive ways to take care of yourself by creating new habits.

Break-up support team

Of course, if all else fails, the fortress of family and friends, legal and financial experts, as well as solid support services like a therapist or coach, are vital to maintaining your wellbeing throughout the separation process. Sometimes time alone is what you need, but always have your break-up support team on hand.

City seafood

When the coast meets the city. Two North East food icons are uniting this spring as Colmans Fish and Chips pops up in Fenwick Newcastle…

businesses coming together and Fenwick is such an iconic store in Newcastle.”

In a move that brings together two much-loved North East family businesses, Colmans Fish and Chips is set to launch a brand new restaurant within Fenwick Newcastle. This exciting collaboration marks Colmans’ first venture north of the Tyne and it’s already generating plenty of buzz. The restaurant will officially open to the public on 20 March. Luxe chats with the Colmans family to find out more about this landmark partnership.

After almost a century of serving awardwinning seafood on Ocean Road in South Shields, one of the most famous names in fish and chips is ready to treat Newcastle to its signature dish… and more.

Colmans has forged a reputation for cooking up the nation’s favourite from its South Tyneside heartland.

But the time is right to head north after a unique opportunity arose to link up with another fifth-generation family-run business.

“We have a huge Newcastle clientele already,” explains director Richard Colman. “We’re already a regional favourite but it’ll be great to take our fish and chips into the city centre and make our menu more accessible for people who wouldn’t necessarily come to South Shields as much.”

So, why Fenwick and why now? It turns out the partnership was a classic case of the right place at the right time.

“The Hjem pop-up was coming to a close so Fenwick was looking for someone to come in and fill the gap,” adds Richard. “It was a no-brainer. Two really well-known family

Fish and chips are more than just food; they’re a part of British heritage, a fact Colmans understands better than most.

“Fish and chips has always been there, hasn’t it? It’s not a ‘trend’ food - it’s a staple for people. It’s one of those dishes that people constantly go back to, whether it’s for comfort or nostalgia.

“Everybody’s got that memory of fish and chips, whether it’s sitting with your grandparents on the beach or having a kick around and getting a bag of chips. Those family memories fuel strong emotions.”

While traditional fish and chips will be the star of the show at Fenwick, the team is also keen to introduce some innovative twists.

“Fish and chips will be the core product - it’s what we’re famous for, but we’re also going

to do some small plates based on the traditional things you would get in a fish and chip shop. We’ll have some great grilled and gluten free options too for those who aren’t feeling the fried choices,” adds Richard.

Expect creative takes on familiar favourites.

“You might go to a fish and chip shop and get fish and chips, but fancy a battered sausage too. We’re going to take those elements and make them into cool, trendy sides. We’re partnering with local independents like Geordie Bangers for a bespoke battered sausage and Chris Eagle at Great North Provisions for a really good pie.”

The commitment to quality remains paramount.

“Whatever people choose, it’ll be done with the best ingredients and the best products.

We’re giving Newcastle what they remember about their local fish and chip shop - but done really, really well.”

This new venture will also create job opportunities in the city.

“To start with, we’ll have 12 to 15 members of staff working at the Fenwick restaurant. But if there’s a demand for the business, we’ll be recruiting more.”

Colmans is also using some of their experienced staff from South Shields to help train and assist the Newcastle team.

“We’re bringing all of the teams into the Seafood Temple. They’ll get to know the brand, the history, and the food. We want them to feel part of the Colmans family and understand our story.”

For Richard and his family, Fenwick is more than just a store - it’s a place that defines the region.

“I remember going to see the Fenwick Christmas Window with my mum and dad, seeing the Christmas lights, going upstairs, getting my toys, and then going for food every year,” he remembers.

“Last year, I got to do that with my son for the first time, which was really special.

“Just like fish and chips, Fenwick is associated with family, tradition, and timeless experiences. We see so many generational families coming to Colmansparents, children, grandchildren - and we think that will work really well in Fenwick.”

Fenwick has long been a cornerstone of Newcastle’s retail scene, and Colmans has admired its adaptability.

“They don’t stop. They’re constantly trying to evolve, invest, and adapt to new trends. If you stand still, everyone else will take over, but Fenwick has always been one step ahead.”

This innovative spirit aligns with Colmans’ own ethos.

“We saw a gap in the market when we opened the Seafood Temple, blending traditional fish and chips with more a la carte seafood options. Now, with this Fenwick venture, we’re going back to our roots while introducing some exciting new elements.”

As the Fenwick restaurant prepares to open, the team is optimistic.

“It’s going to be a great opportunity and a learning curve. Moving from a coastal town to a city centre will be a culture shock, but Fenwick has been incredibly supportive. They’ve given us a lot of creative freedom to get this off the ground.”

With two beloved North East names joining forces, the stage is set for a delicious new chapter in Newcastle’s food scene.

The Colmans x Fenwick restaurant promises to serve up not just great food, but a generous helping of nostalgia, tradition, and family values. As these two iconic businesses come together, the future looks deliciously bright.

Colmans opens in Fenwick from 20 March.

HOME COMFORTS

with chef Chris Baber

It’s all about chocolate-fuelled trips, feel-good food adventures, glorious greens and hot cross buns as we head into spring…

MY WORLD >>

I’ve been out to Brussels a couple of times already this year to do some work with the Corinthia Hotel, helping out with their healthy food offering. It has been amazing to bring my passions for fitness, sport and really great food together. I’ve helped them to create a wellness menu, which was really fun. Plus, I got to travel and spend some time in Brussels. It was really interesting to see the contrast in Belgian food - being very rich and creamy - versus my lighter spin on things. All of the things that my menu isn’t, they’ve got it - beer, chocolate, you name it! So it was a challenge, but definitely a very exciting one.

I’m really trying to marry up the work I do as a chef, and the work I do in the fitness world. For me, it’s all about focusing on fresh, seasonal ingredients, cooked in a way that’s healthy but also fitting in with lifestyle, ensuring people have a healthy relationship with food. That’s what I am most passionate about. Fitness and food go hand in hand, and I’m really enjoying promoting that.

FOODIE HAPPENINGS >>

Looking ahead, the food diary is starting to fill up - kicking off with the Sussex Showcase in March, where I’m going to be hosting a couple of events. It’s really cool to get in front of people and showcase some of the dishes, ingredients and techniques I like to use. I’m going to be back in Turkey in May for the Olympian wellness event, which I’m

ASK CHRIS >>

really excited about - so preparations are underway for that. There’s a lot going on behind the scenes - and I like to take the first few months of the year to get things in line - as we head into spring, things really start moving and, even just as the produce comes to life again, it’s a really exciting time in the food world.

INSPIRED BY THE SEASONS >>

Spring is my favourite season for so many reasons, but mainly for the vibrant array of food that comes to life in the UK. I just love the transition from root vegetables and comfort food, to everything suddenly bursting into colour - lots of bright green produce to work with. Asparagus is by far my favourite ingredient to work with, because the season is so short. Asparagus is really only at its best for two weeks - it’s the sort of thing that, for me, I will only eat it when it’s in season, and I’ll eat it literally three or four times a week when it’s at its best. Most of our asparagus comes from the Wye Valley - I’ve eaten it straight out of the ground there - and it’s like eating a sugarsnap pea, it is so sweet. I would urge anyone, if they’re buying asparagus, to try and get it from greengrocers, or at least make sure it’s British.

Early spring is also a great time for new potatoes, broad beans, peas, watercress - just wonderful spring veg. It’s really simple, but it’s all about light, fresh, green ingredients. It just feels like things have come full circle and we’re getting a bit of life back into our meals. I love it.

If you have any questions you want to ask Chris, please get in touch via his Instagram page. Chris will select a question and answer it in the next column. #AskChris Q: Do you have any foodie recommendations when it comes to spring/summer staycations?

A: Close to home, Middleton Lodge would have to be my top pick for a foodie staycation. I really love that place. I am constantly telling friends down here in London how great it is up north, particularly when it comes to the food scene, and I think Middleton Lodge is one of the places really leading the way - not only in the north, but in the UK as a whole. Everything from the rooms, the contrast of the fine dining restaurant versus the Coach House, the spa, is just perfect. Further afield, I’d definitely recommend a foodie trip to the Cotswolds. I stayed in Moreton-in-Marsh, and every day explored a different town or village. We walked, stopped for lunch, and of course a coffee and cake break here and there. A top recommendation from me would be a place called The Bull in Charlbury. It was exceptional - the best pie I’ve ever eaten. Funnily enough, Ellen DeGeneres was sat on the table next to us and we talked about how good the food was. She was blown away as much as we were. One of the best pubs I’ve ever been to! Book ahead because it gets really busy.

Serving the city

Terry Laybourne MBE is set to receive the Freedom of Newcastle, celebrating his immense influence on the city’s culinary scene. His story is one of passion, dedication, and teamwork

him, given his vast contributions to the city.

Terry Laybourne MBE is no stranger to awards and accolades, but this one really hits home. The man behind some of Newcastle’s best-loved restaurants is set to receive the Freedom of the City, a huge honour that recognises his incredible impact on the region’s culinary scene. With decades of experience and a career that’s helped shape the North East’s food culture, Terry has made his mark - but as always, he remains humble about his achievements and shares the credit with the amazing teams who have supported him along the way.

Terry’s journey to becoming one of the region’s most celebrated restaurateurs is as inspiring as it is impressive. He opened his first restaurant, 21 Queen Street, in 1988 with his wife Susan and brother Laurance, breathing new life into Newcastle’s dining scene. Just three years later, 21 Queen Street was awarded a Michelin Star, a milestone moment in his colourful culinary career. In the years that followed, 21 Hospitality Group has grown to include some of Newcastle’s most iconic restaurants, such as The Broad Chare, Saltwater Fish Company, Porterhouse Butcher and Grill, and St Vincent. His unwavering commitment to the city’s culinary scene, coupled with his dedication to his team and customers, has solidified his place as a key figure in Newcastle’s economic and cultural growth.

The upcoming Freedom of Newcastle award comes as no surprise to those who know

“It’s lovely to be recognised for having made a difference, and that’s my overriding feeling,” Terry says.

“However, I am, and always have been, little more than a cog in the wheel.

“I’d suggest that I’m the architect, the conductor maybe, who didn’t necessarily build anything. The execution is down to my wonderful staff and the teams of talented people I’ve had around me over the years.

“I’d like to recognise those people and I would like them to know that this honour is as much about them as it is about me. The reality is that they make me look good.

“Our industry has a reputation for the transience of its workforce, and yet there are people I work with now who’ve been by my side for many, many years.

“Being part of 21 Hospitality Group is about being part of an organisation where loyalty goes both ways and where training and career development are a key focus.”

For Terry, working within such a dedicated and trusted team feels especially special because it’s in his hometown of Newcastle.

“To work within such a strong and trusted team, in my home city, feels special,” he says with a smile.

“I’m very proud to have played a small part in bringing Newcastle’s hospitality sector to the fore.”

As he reflects on his early years, Terry acknowledged his close partnership with Nick Shottel, Operations Director at 21 Hospitality Group, whom he refers to as ‘Mr Hospitality.’

“I’ve been hugely fortunate to have Nick alongside me as my right-hand man,” he says.

“And, of course, without the ongoing support of our customers, there would be no restaurants. Some of those people have been with us from day one, and I’m hugely grateful that they’re still there today.”

Terry’s impact on the North East isn’t just confined to the kitchen. His work has been instrumental in transforming Newcastle’s hospitality scene, elevating the city to a thriving hub of world-class dining experiences.

Newcastle City Councillor Karen Robinson praised Terry’s contributions, highlighting his influence on both the local economy and the broader cultural landscape:

“Terry’s huge contribution to the city’s economy was highlighted at a recent meeting to approve his nomination for the Freedom of Newcastle. His dedication to improving Newcastle’s food culture has been nothing short of transformative.”

Councillor Wendy Taylor also noted the dramatic changes that have taken place in the local hospitality sector over the years:

“The changes in the hospitality sector since I first came to Newcastle in 1973 have been truly remarkable,” she says.

“Then it was difficult to find a good restaurant, now we are completely spoiled for choice. Terry has made a huge contribution to that change.”

Terry has quite rightly received numerous accolades over the years, including an Egon Ronay Star, a Catey Award for Independent Restaurateur of the Year, and a gold Taste of North East England award. In 2008, during his time as co-owner of Jesmond Dene House, he and his team were awarded the prestigious AA Hotel of the Year award.

Terry’s success didn’t come overnight. His path into the culinary world was an unexpected one, as he originally left school

in the early 1970s with plans to become an engineer. However, a restrictive economy during a recession led him to reconsider his options.

A friend introduced him to the possibility of becoming a chef, which he interpreted as a form of ‘food engineering.’ After an apprenticeship with the Swallow Hotel Group, he moved to the Channel Islands, where he began his training under the mentorship of German chef Claus Mollin. This experience led him to accept various roles in five-star hotels across Germany and Switzerland.

He returned to Newcastle in the early 1980s, and after spending eight years running The Fisherman’s Lodge, he opened 21 Queen Street, ushering in a new era for Newcastle’s dining culture. By 1999, his dedication to the restaurant industry was recognised with an MBE for his contributions to both the hospitality sector and tourism.

“It means a lot to me that this honour reflects the importance of the hospitality sector to the culture and the economy of the city of Newcastle,” Terry says.

“My industry is, to a degree, both incredibly competitive and, at the same time, quite insular. We tend to operate in something of a bubble most of the time!

“It’s not unusual for individuals or individual restaurants to be championed within our sector, but external recognition for the industry is rare. The fact that the Freedom of Newcastle is a city-wide honour is really refreshing and something to celebrate.”

For Terry Laybourne, the recognition of his achievements is not just a personal triumph but a testament to the broader impact of the hospitality industry in Newcastle. As the city continues to grow as a destination for food lovers, his contributions will undoubtedly remain at the heart of this thriving scene.

A lake escape

Sitting in a serene spot above the shimmering waters of Lake Windermere, Linthwaite House is a sanctuary of romance and refined luxury. From breathtaking views to farm-to-table dining, Elysia Fryer discovers a haven where time slows, and indulgence takes centre stage

There are places that capture your heart the moment you arrive, and Linthwaite House is one of them. Tucked away on a hillside, overlooking Lake Windermere, this elegant retreat promises romance and indulgence in spades. It’s a place where time slows down, senses awaken, and the everyday simply melts away. It’s a wholesome escape, and the perfect tonic for an early spring getaway.

The journey up the winding driveway sets the tone for our stay: framed by manicured gardens, impressive statues and towering trees - each turn revealing another picture-perfect glimpse of the lake and fell. The house itself is a stately, whitewashed building standing boldly against the backdrop of the Cumbrian hills. It has the kind of presence that forces you to stop and

take it all in. Grand, yet intimate; timeless, yet contemporary. It’s warm and inviting as soon as you step inside; in everything from the original fireplace in the entrance hall, to the well-considered interiors and the smiling faces that greet us. The decor strikes a harmonious balance between classic charm and modern luxury. Comfy armchairs invite you to sink in beside the crackling fireplace, while large windows draw the eye to the spectacular views beyond. The newly built conservatory is a particular delight - a light and bright oasis that showcases Windermere in all its glory. Sitting here, with a welcome hot chocolate, the space filled with warm afternoon sunlight, boats gliding across the water, it’s good for the soul kind of stuff. There’s an easygoing elegance to the team’s approach. From a sleek and informative check in and being whisked to our suite

Linthwaite House offers something remarkably romantic. A place where time stands still and life feels a little more magical

on a golf buggy, to the seamless dinner reservations, nothing feels like too much trouble.

Speaking of suites, ours is a hideaway tucked into the trees - a hilltop haven that feels like our own private world. The design is sleek and contemporary, with earthy tones and sumptuous textures creating a cocoon of comfort. Cosy rugs and sofas, a log-burning fireplace, and a bed so indulgently soft you can’t help but sink in and switch off. But the best bit? The patio doors that open to an uninterrupted view of the lake, with the hills rolling beyond, dancing amongst the clouds.

A huge tub takes centre stage in the bathroom; the perfect place to see out the day with bubbles of all kinds. Underfloor heating keeps things toasty, and the spa-like toiletries make it impossible not to unwind. Of course, no stay at Linthwaite House would be complete without experiencing Henrock, the on-site restaurant from Michelin-starred chef Simon Rogan MBE. The seasonal, super local ingredients take centre stage in dishes that are as beautiful as they are delicious. At Henrock, the menus are inspired by the flavours and techniques discovered on the team’s travels around the world. True to their ethos, they predominantly work with the best local and seasonal ingredients,

including produce from Simon’s regenerative farm, 'Our Farm', located just a few miles away in the Cartmel Valley.

Our culinary adventure begins with a pre-dinner cocktail in the bar, before we’re whisked into the restaurant for snackstiny yet intricate bites that pack a serious punch. First up, it’s the smoked trout tart with cherry blossom, sour cream, and buckwheat. The smokiness of the trout, combined with the floral sweetness of the cherry blossom, is an unexpected delight.

The kimchi potato terrine, topped with Mrs Kirkham's cheddar and lemon drop chilli, is equally impressive. My dinner date, choosing from the vegan menu, enjoys the sugar snax carrot with cherry blossom and apple, alongside a confit potato with kimchi and lemon drop chilli.

The starters continue the theme of culinary excellence. My beef featherblade, served with black garlic, smoked fat emulsion, and lovage, is beautifully rich, each mouthful melting effortlessly. Across the table, the glazed smoked swede with spiced jus, New Zealand spinach, and sichuan pepper surprises us with its robust texture and complex layers of spice.

For mains, my Houghton Springs trout steals the show. Poached to perfection, it arrives with a silky sauce, ribbons of mooli, and

Each forkful a harmonious blend of delicate smokiness, fresh citrus notes, and buttery fish. The snowball cauliflower dish is a textural triumph - roasted with a nutty sweetness and accompanied by hens of the woods mushrooms, pickled walnut, and a subtle buttermilk dressing.

The pre-dessert acts as a delightful palate cleanser: chrysanthemum, beeswax cream, honey, and pollen granola for me; elderflower cream with fennel granola for my companion. Light, refreshing, and just sweet enough to prepare us for the finale.

My chamomile cream dessert arrives with sea buckthorn, carrot, and a pumpkin seed biscuit. The floral notes are balanced beautifully with the sharpness of the sea buckthorn. Meanwhile, the vegan preserved quince with olive leaf oil, koji, and toasted buckwheat ice cream knocks it out of the park.

Throughout the meal, we journey across the globe on an exquisite wine flight, expertly paired by the restaurant’s sommelier, who talks us through each glass in detail.

Feeling full and content, we retire to the bar to sink into the sofas for a night cap, before

excitedly returning to our suite for a seriously sumptuous slumber.

As day breaks and the morning sun sneaks through the trees, we’re straight to our feet to get out and explore the glorious grounds that surround Linthwaite House. Sculptures from South Africa scatter the landscape, adding an artistic twist to the beautiful natural environment. The Tarn deserves a special mention - a secluded pond where guests can paddle a little rowing boat with only the rippling water and birdsong for company.

Mornings here feel slow and special. We linger over breakfast with freshly baked pastries, creamy avocado, and coffee so good it demands a second cup.

Linthwaite House offers something remarkably romantic. A place where time stands still and life feels a little more magical. For anyone seeking a truly indulgent escape - with a culinary adventure thrown in for good measure, this lakeside gem delivers on every level.

As we reluctantly pack our bags, I make a silent promise to myself: we’ll be back.

Wild at heart

Tucked on the edge of the Grand Teton National Park in the heart of Wyoming’s wild beauty, Four Seasons Jackson Hole is the ultimate year-round adventure, combining cosy luxury with the untamed spirit of cowboy culture. Elysia Fryer checks in…

Our trip to Jackson Hole is one of snow-capped peaks, cowboy hats, and an untamed wilderness that feels worlds apart from the hustle of everyday life. Unlike the European ski resorts we are used to - this place is raw, majestic, and totally unique in its own charming way.

From the moment we land at Jackson Hole Airport, there’s an effortless warmth. Sleek, modern design and dark woods embrace the space, while wooden statues of wildlife stand against the backdrops of snowy vistas. The snow is falling softly outside, and our SUV is waiting, welcoming us into this magical place.

Jackson Hole, nestled in Wyoming’s majestic Teton Mountains, is a ski lover’s dream in the winter, an outdoorsy haven in the summer, and so many other things in between. The area is a true blend of adventure and relaxation, where outdoor exploration meets the cosiest of comforts. It’s magic. And we are so excited to tell you why!

When it comes to accommodation, the Four Seasons Jackson Hole is beyond brilliant. There’s something uniquely comforting

about the seamless blend of alpine charm and contemporary luxury that the hotel embodies. Every inch of the place makes you feel cocooned in warmth and comfort, but it also embraces the cool quirks of the valley, as though it was designed for the modernday cowboy and cowgirl.

Upon arriving, the lobby welcomes us with roaring fires and the rich scent of fresh flowers. We’re greeted with a hot apple cider - with a boozy kick to fight the jet lag! Every corner radiates warmth, with the natural beauty of the surroundings captured in the dark wood, stone accents, and alpineinspired artworks. It’s the type of place where you feel immediately at home - yet utterly spoiled.

The thoughtful details in our suite elevate the experience further. The space is complete with a super king-sized bed dressed in crisp white linens, and an electric fireplace provides just the right amount of warmth as the snow falls outside. Open up the wooden shutters onto the balcony and you’re greeted with picture-perfect views of the snow-covered landscape. You feel utterly immersed in nature here, with all the little luxuries at your fingertips.

A walk-in wardrobe, his-and-hers sinks, a

large soaking tub, and a rainfall shower in the bathroom make for the ultimate retreat. And complete with Le Labo toiletries, we are in our element. Then there are the small details that really set the bar - an iPad for resort information and live chat, Bose speakers to set the soundtrack, and a mini-bar stocked with everything you could need. Oh, and a welcome treat that’s simply too gorgeous to eat - a fully edible Teton Mountain sculpture made from dark chocolate and complete with macarons and truffles.

Breakfast each day is a feast for the senses, whether you head to the Westbank Grill, with panoramic views over the buzzy slopes, or pop by the First Chair Grab & Go for a takeout treat. The wagyu beef burritos here are not to be missed! The Grab & Go is also home to an unexpected yet delightful treatespresso martinis on tap, the perfect fuel for the slopes, and a great way to unwind after a day in the snow.

Other special details include the outdoor fire pits on the hotel’s sprawling veranda, where you can people watch to your heart’s content - the perfect après-ski setting. And, our

personal favourite, hot chocolate on tap as you return to ‘Base Camp’ after a day’s skiing. Bliss.

The hotel’s new 80 Proof Speakeasy is certainly worth a visit, perfect for a nightcap or two! This hidden gem within the hotel channels the Prohibition Era and serves up elevated cocktails with the rugged spirit of the American wilderness. It’s the kind of place where you feel like you’re stepping into an old Western film, but with modern mixology that really hits the spot.

Now, let’s talk about the skiing. As a regular skier in the Alps, where the slopes are often more crowded and the runs feel a bit tighter, skiing in Jackson Hole is like nothing I’ve ever experienced. The wide-open runs, the lack of crowds, and the breathtaking scenery make it feel like you’re skiing in a world of your own. The resort itself has plenty of variety, whether you’re a beginner or an expert, and the staff - friendly, knowledgeable and helpful - make you feel like you’re the most important person on the mountain.

An unforgettable experience is dining at Trapper’s restaurant, located at the

Every inch of the place makes you feel cocooned in warmth and comfort, but it also embraces the cool quirks of the valley, as though it was designed for the modern-day cowboy and cowgirl

Sweetwater Gondola mid-station. Trapper’s is a luxe lunch spot offering a beautiful, cosy atmosphere with delicious food and stunning views.

After a few exhilarating runs, Trapper’s is the ideal place to refuel with delicious fare and a warm, welcoming environment. Think fires, feel-good comfort food, and vibes to match. Another must during a visit to Four Seasons Jackson Hole is a half-day wildlife safari with Jackson Hole Wildlife Safaris. After bundling up in lots of layers, we set off on a journey through Grand Teton National Park and the National Elk Refuge. Our guide, Colin, is a walking encyclopedia of local knowledge, from the wildlife that roams the area to the rich history of the land. Our luxury SUV is comfortable and perfectly suited for the winter conditions, and the scenic drive through the park leaves us in awe. We spot thousands of elk and bison, as well as bighorn sheep scurrying up the mountain as a chopper passes overhead. Colin feels like a friend as we wrap up the trip, full of newfound knowledge and an appreciation for Jackson Hole’s wild side.

It’s not just the nature and the skiing that makes Jackson Hole a must-see destination. We are mesmerised by the lifestyle and culture here. The cowboy heritage is woven into every corner of the town, and there’s something utterly captivating about this slower, yet more exhilarating, way of life. The town itself is a charming place full of quirky shops, cool coffee spots, and lively bars. An absolute must is a visit to Kemo Sabe. There’s nothing quite like it when it comes to stepping into the world of cowboy fashion. Here, you can custom-design your own hat, choosing the color, shape, and style, while the experts guide you through curling the edges and adding personal touches like initials and ribbon.

After a day on the slopes and soaking up the local culture, there’s no better way to relax than to unwind at the hotel’s spa. The outdoor thermal pools, with skiers whizzing

by as you soak in the water, is an indulgent experience to say the least; and an afternoon nap in the spa’s relaxation room is an absolute must.

Dining at the Four Seasons is equally as memorable. Dinner at Westbank Grill, with its intimate atmosphere and sweeping views of the surrounding peaks, is a treat for the senses. For something delicious and local, try the Rocky Mountain elk chop. The star of the show for us, paired perfectly with a robust, local red wine. If you’re in the mood for something a little different, head into town and check out Osteria, serving up excellent Italian food with a list of fine wines to match. The truffle mushroom pasta paired with a refreshing bottle of Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc. Perfect.

And of course, you can’t leave Jackson Hole without a visit to the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar. It’s a Jackson Hole institution where you can sit on saddle stools, enjoy a beer, and soak in the local atmosphere. It feels like the very embodiment of this place - laid-back, fun, and full of character.

There’s something truly magical about Jackson Hole, and the Four Seasons is the perfect base for exploring all it has to offer.

It’s a destination where nature and luxury come together in harmony, where you can experience the thrill of the slopes by day and unwind in the cosiest of settings by night. Sitting down to breakfast at Westbank Grill on our final morning, we were greeted by two moose wandering across the slopes right in front of us. A moment of pure magic.

The people, the place, the culture - it all adds up to an unforgettable experience that we can’t wait to repeat. Jackson Hole is wild, wonderful, and utterly one-of-a-kind. It’s an adventure waiting to be crossed off your bucket list. Jackson Hole is well worth the journey from the UK. Flying from London Heathrow via Salt Lake City, with other connections available, making for the perfect dual-destination trip. fourseasons.com/jacksonhole

with Rupert helped by Elysia Fryer

Spring forward

Spring has sprung, and as the days grow longer and the garden bursts into life, Rupert is more than ready to swap his cosy winter coat for something a little more colourful. The promise of brighter evenings means more time for garden adventures and stretching those legs in the fresh spring air.

This season, we’re celebrating all things new and vibrant. Rupert’s been busy curating his spring essentials - from bright jackets to paw-friendly adventure gear, because every

posh pooch needs a wardrobe refresh.

We’ve also been chatting with Murphy the Show Cocker, who is a high flyer when it comes to exploring the workplace at NALjets.

Plus, we’ve got our fingers (and paws!) firmly crossed for Gary Hooker, who’s in the running for Breeder of the Year at the upcoming Pawscars Awards.

Here’s to a new season celebrating the simple joy of a sunny spot in the garden!

Rupert, your Luxe pooch x

Vote for our Breeder of the Year!

North East dog lovers have a reason to celebrate as our very own Luxe Locks columnist Gary Hooker has been nominated for the prestigious Breeder of the Year award at the Pawscars Awards 2025. This accolade recognises exceptional dedication, knowledge and care within the breeding communityand Gary’s nomination is a testament to his passion for his pooches.

Gary has long been a familiar face in the region’s canine circles, known for his unwavering commitment to the health, wellbeing and temperament of his dogs. Over the years, his work has brought joy to countless families and showcased the very best of North East breeding excellence.

The Pawscars Awards 2025 will be held

Luxe pet Q&A

Murphy is a four-year-old Show Cocker, often seen soaring above the clouds with his friends at NALjets. He has an amazing mop of hair, a jet-setter lifestyle, but above all, loves nothing more than cuddles and tummy rubs!

LUXE WALKS

Murphy LOVES the beach (he loves digging) and equally enjoys the woodshunting for the biggest stick he can, usually a small tree!.

POOCH’S PERFECT DAY OUT

His perfect day out would involve a trip to the beach or woods, walking for miles with lots of interesting smells along the way. Stopping for a drink and some treats - sometimes a puppucino at his favourite coffee shop and another walk back home where he can snuggle up with whoever’s in the house and snooze for the rest of the day.

DOGGY DOWNTIME

Murphy loves cuddles on the sofa and during the colder months, being wrapped in a heated throw.

HOUND HABITS

He is absolutely obsessed with balls - we have a running joke that if Murphy has eight balls, and the one he is playing with runs under the sofa, how many balls does Murphy have left? The simple answer is zero balls as the remaining seven don’t exist if he wants the one under the sofa!

on Wednesday, 5 March at the Motorcycle Museum near the NEC in Birmingham - a glamorous, black-tie affair that promises to bring together the best and brightest of the canine world. While voting has now closed, Gary and his team are overwhelmed by the support they’ve received from the local community.

“It’s been incredible,” Gary shares.

“Knowing that so many people took the time to vote means the world to us. Win or lose, we feel like winners already.”

As we await the results, the Luxe team wishes Gary the best of luck. Whatever the outcome, he’s already made the North East incredibly proud - and we’re sure his four-legged friends would give him a standing ovation if they could!

PUPPY PAMPER

Weirdly, although he dislikes the groomers, he absolutely loves being brushed. He also enjoys being a therapy dog with our operations team when he has an office day here at NALjets.

DOG’S BEST FRIEND

Murphy has a few dog friends - Margot, Pablo, Florence and Darcy. His favourite human is his mam (Donna) as she ignores him the most and he insists on sitting on her at every opportunity!

FONDEST DOGGY MEMORY

Murphy is terrified of cats! Probably not his fondest memory, but one we always look back and laugh at was the time he had to be carried past a cat.

PUPPY A-LISTER. WHO WOULD YOUR POOCH BE IF THEY WERE A CELEBRITY?

Keanu Reeves - handsome and quite cool, doesn’t take himself seriously, kind and unassuming but a bit of a goofball!

Don’t forget to get in touch and send in pics of your pet for our next issue via Facebook and Instagram…

David and Victoria’s Seaham wedding was a perfect blend of love and luxury

The couple

David Stubbs, 43, Operations Director at Allies Group and Victoria Stubbs, 38, Project Support Officer at NHS.

The date 28 August 2024.

The proposal

David dropped down on one knee back in 2017 at the beautiful Swinton Park Hotel. Following the engagement, life got busy with their two daughters, Florence and Agnes, and their dog, Jefferson. Wedding planning was set aside for a little while, but they always knew they wanted to wait for the perfect moment to celebrate their love with family and friends.

The venue

The couple tied the knot at Dalton Old Pumphouse in Seaham, a venue as unique as it is beautiful. Located in a place close to their hearts - where they first met, and where they regularly visit with the girls and dog - it was the perfect setting for their special day.

The bride wore

Victoria looked stunning in a Morilee wedding dress (called Danielle) purchased from The Wedding Wardrobe in Chester-le-Street. The lace detailing and

fitted silhouette were nothing short of breathtaking. She completed the look with elegant shoes from Linzi London and stunning earrings from John Lewis. Florence and Agnes were the stars of the show as Flower Girls and wore charming dresses from Monsoon, while the Maid of Honour, Lorna, wore a soft sage green dress from Ever Pretty.

The groom wore David looked dapper in a sleek black tuxedo from Woven Durham. The ensemble was finished with a velvet suit jacket from Remus Uomo and polished shoes from House of Cavani - creating a modern, refined look that perfectly complemented Victoria’s bridal elegance.

The cake

The couple went for a simple yet sophisticated design for their cake, created by the incredibly talented Everybody Loves Cake (a friend of a friend). An understated yet stunning design.

Special details

The couple’s wedding was filled with personal touches that made the day even more meaningful. Guests received silver heart pin badges as favours, bought to support CHUF (Children’s Heart Unit Fund), in memory of their dear friends. David is an active fundraiser for CHUF, regularly running for the charity. A memory table was set up with framed pictures of loved ones no longer with them, including their grandparents and special friends, Jemma and Michael Telford.

For entertainment, the couple hired the band Dakota Skies, who very quickly got everyone on the dance

floor. To keep the energy up, a magic mirror photo booth from AG Events was available, providing hours of entertainment for guests of all ages.

The honeymoon

Following the wedding, David and Victoria enjoyed a relaxing minimoon at Low Wood Bay in the Lake District. Staying in a luxurious Winander Club Suite, they indulged in gourmet food, spa treatments, and stunning views. They also dined at The Samling restaurant for a Michelin-starred tasting menu - if it’s good enough for the Beckhams, it’s certainly good enough for the Stubbs!

Wedding wisdom: thedetailsedit

Tanya Hedley is Head of Weddings at the Gainford Group, overseeing weddings at The Vermont Hotel, The County Hotel, and ABOVE.

With over six years of experience within the group and a 13 year career in the industry, Tanya has orchestrated thousands of weddings and possesses unparalleled knowledge of these iconic venues

You've secured your venue - so what comes next? Gainford Group’s resident wedding expert, Tanya, is here to answer your questions and guide you through the next steps of your wedding planning journey…

Q: I have no idea where to start with my wedding decor. Help!

A: Don’t worry - you’re not alone! This is a common dilemma, but it’s also an exciting one. You’ve likely gathered plenty of inspiration while searching for your venue, but until now, you may not have been ready to focus on decor decisions. That’s completely understandable. The venue itself plays a huge role in shaping your overall aesthetic, and what works beautifully in one setting may not suit another, no matter how much you love it.

A great first step is to check with your venue coordinator to see what’s already included in your package. For example, at Gainford Weddings, we provide a selection of linens, a choice of chairs, an elegant ivory aisle runner, a red or ivory Royal Mail post box, a variety of cake stands, and professionally printed wedding stationery. Understanding

what’s available to you upfront can help streamline your planning and avoid unnecessary purchases.

Once you have a clear picture of your venue’s offerings, take a step back and consider the overall look and feel you want to achieve. Create a list of décor essentials before getting lost in the endless inspiration of Pinterest and Instagram - it’s all too easy to go overboard and stretch your budget. Stick to your vision, and remember that thoughtful, well-chosen details will have the biggest impact on your big day! Trending: Nostalgia, think bows (lots of ‘em), Lambeth cakes and pretty glassware.

Q: I attended three weddings last year, and they all served the same mealseriously, no more sticky toffee pudding! How can I make my wedding menu stand out?

A: I get it - couples today are moving away from traditional fine dining in favor of food that feels personal and unique. The key is striking a balance between what you love and something that feels special for your guests.

One great approach is to elevate classic comfort food - imagine individual steak and ale pies with golden puff pastry lids. A few years ago, a couple insisted on fish and chips, so we took it up a notch by serving them on custom-designed ‘newspaper’ liners, giving a nostalgic nod to old-school chippies.

While we provide sample menus, the golden rule applies - if you don’t ask, you don’t get! If there’s a dish you adore that’s not listed, let us know. If we can make it happen, we absolutely will.

For example, we kicked off this year’s wedding season with a Sri Lankan-inspired menu, tailored for a Sri Lankan bride. The coconut rice was jeweled with pomegranate seeds, pistachios, and edible flowers, while the wedding cake was beautifully plated with star fruit and dragon fruit.

As for me? I’d go for an heirloom tomato salad with whipped goat’s cheese and walnuts, followed by a secretly vegan steak and ale pie - though I wouldn’t tell a soul!

Q: We’re eloping to Las Vegas! My mum has finally come around to the idea, but she’s hoping we’ll include our family in a bigger celebration when we get back home. How can we make it feel more special than just the usual ‘evening do’?

A: Whether you’re tying the knot in Vegas, Cyprus, or Santorini, eloping is such a

romantic choice - huge congratulations to you both! And when you’re back on home turf, celebrating with loved ones, you’ll truly have the best of both worlds.

To make your party unforgettable, start by setting the scene the moment guests arrive. Greet them with a themed welcome drink that reflects your wedding destination - like refreshing Peach Bellinis or Limoncello spritzes if you married in Italy. And let’s weave your story through the food! While we have sample menus to inspire you, we’d love to customise them. For a Vegas vibe, think all-American classics like burgers, fries, and milkshakes - fun, nostalgic, and totally delicious!

But if you really want to create a special moment for your nearest and dearest (and win Nan’s heart), let’s plan a secret screening before the main party kicks off. Allow us to set up a cosy cinema-style setup with a big screen, comfy chairs, and, we’ll even provide the popcorn (I do mine with truffle oil!)

Invite your VIP guests for a private viewing of your wedding video or a slideshow of your wedding photos. It’s a beautiful way to share your vows and give your family a front-row seat to your special daycreating lasting memories before the party gets into full swing. gainfordgroup.com

The transformation

HOT PROPERTY

A beautiful coastal property has been brought back to life for a retired couple…

The lowdown

The owners of this calming coastal retreat in Seahouses, Northumberland started their journey with Studio Dean before they’d even purchased the property, and continued collaborating throughout every stage of the project.

The clients

The clients were a husband-and-wife pair of medical professionals coming towards the end of their working lives, looking for a peaceful rural haven. They wanted somewhere mostly just for them, but with room for their twenty-something daughter to continue to live with them on and off, and for their two grown-up sons to visit and stay over for extended periods of time and feel at home.

The

property

The property is an old traditional stone building in the most beautiful Northumberland seaside setting with uninterrupted views over the North East coastline, Farne Island and Bamburgh Castle.

The dream

Moving to a dream home by the coast was part of the couple’s retirement plan. They wanted a place where they could settle, call home and invite their whole family to share with them. With grown up children and grandchildren now becoming a part of their lives, they wanted a space their family would enjoy visiting.

Many years ago, the couple made a promise to each other that when they retired, they would get a snooker table, so a games room was also an exciting part of the plan.

The owners knew of Cathy’s work and had decided that Studio Dean were the interior designers for them, long before they had found a property to move to.

Initially in search of a turn-key property, they viewed dozens of places without any joy. In

early 2020 they discovered a rundown section of a former seaside hotel which in the 1980s had been subdivided into several large terraced houses.

It was in a dilapidated condition, but it was beautifully positioned by a sandy beach, with unspoilt North Sea views towards the Farne Islands. It was an irresistible prospect. The couple asked Cathy to scout out the house and see if something might be done with it.

Where the clients envisioned a mostly cosmetic upgrade, Cathy saw something much more involved.

“Cathy’s main impact, really,” says the owner, “was to say: let’s open it right up. From the back garden, you can now see all the way through the property, and get views of the sea to the front. That required taking down quite a few internal walls, and opening up smallish windows into big patio doors, and allowing a lot more natural light to flow through.”

In the process of getting to know the clients and what they needed most out of their home, two main areas of focus emerged. One was creating a master bedroom suite, formed by knocking together three pokey little rooms on the upper floor at the front of the house, to create a luxurious selfcontained suite with sea views. It was the

same for downstairs, creating a huge lounge and dining space on the ground floor and offering some of the best views in the county.

The second focus was to fulfil a long-held ambition to have their own full sized snooker table. A games room was a no-brainer for family days, teamed with a home bar, opening out to the garden to create a perfect space for all ages to meet and play together as a family. The games room is downstairs, painted in a speakeasy-moody shade of olive green.

For Studio Dean, the most important thing for this house and the interior architecture was to soak up the views. This involved moving the ground floor loo and creating a new entrance directly into the large hall and introducing a large glazed internal doors working as a room divider but not blocking the view the moment you enter the space.

On the first floor, the clients believed they would have to use the bedroom to the rear as their room because it had the en-suite, but it was clear they had to be waking up to that view every single day. So, with some interior architecture magic and a rerouted soil pipe, the results were an en-suite and a view!

The process

With the coronavirus pandemic already starting to cast its shadow, the clients were able to buy the place for below the asking price.

The cost of the renovation was initially estimated at around half of that amount. But they ended up shelling out roughly as much as they had paid for the house, as forces far beyond their control conspired to produce budget problems and delays galore. Not only the myriad complications of working through the pandemic, but also the sudden, extreme hike in materials costs brought about by Brexit.

Even the Suez Canal being blocked for six days in March 2021 by a run-aground container ship had knock-on effects.

A plasterer’s initial quotation of £10,000 quadrupled mid-job, and half a dozen crucial pieces of furniture ended up stranded for over a month on the wrong side of the Gulf of Suez.

“At one point we started to say it was like the baby that kept crying,” jokes Cathy.

“No matter how much we shushed it and

how much we rocked it and how much we gave it a lovely bottle, it was like ‘I’m crying about something else now’.”

But she credits her clients as being:

“The most resilient, positive people I think I’ve ever met”.

By April 2022 they were finally able to move in, following a holiday in the Outer Hebrides that gave Cathy time to apply the finishing touches.

The result

The owners are not big on bright colours, so most of the palette throughout is earthy, natural and neutral.

But Cathy has kept it interesting by layering subtle variations of tone and texture side by side - in the kitchen, for example, where a broad belt of wood panelling runs up the walls and across the dropped ceiling.

This is not just functional (it conceals pipes and cables) but it gives the black sliding doors to the hall and the mottled brown kitchen cabinetry something to react against.

“The impact of the darkness will be lost unless it’s got a happy partner,” Cathy points out.

The two pairs of steel-framed, glasspanelled Crittall-style doors are a key feature. They divide the formal lounge with its wide open north-easterly views, from the hallway and the kitchen. They close off the space when desired, yet without ever preventing the light that pours in over the North Sea from flooding right through the interior.

Without spatial planning, this home would be a more beautiful space than we found it, but it would never have achieved its full potential. Spatially planning before considering style means the space works beautifully, every day - maximising all the best elements of a property and making sure the day-to-day is taken care of.

“We couldn’t believe it,” says the owner.

“It is just beautiful, elegant, magnificent.

We’ve lived in the house for a year now, moving through all the seasons, watching the sun come up at different parts of the Farne Islands, watching it drop down

For Studio Dean, the most important thing for this house and the interior architecture was to soak up the views

different sides of Bamburgh Castle. It is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to live in a property like this.”

About the designer

This project presented a golden opportunity for Cathy and her team: it was a rare chance to literally get in with the bricks on a job, fundamentally sculpting and shaping a home in a way that enhances its inhabitants’ day-to-day lives, not just aesthetically but practically too.

Cathy Dean founded Studio Dean in 2016

with a desire to blend architectural thinking with interior design. She now has a team of brilliant interior designers working to renovate balanced, beautiful and functional homes across Newcastle, Northumberland and Scotland.

Cathy has made it her life’s mission to dispel the myth that functional cannot be beautiful. She has been creating stunning interior designs that work with everyday life for 14 years, with breathtaking results.

INSPIRING EDUCATION

Designing the future of girls’ education

As a member of the Girls’ Day School Trust (GDST), Newcastle High School for Girls (NHSG) benefits from cuttingedge research, such as the Designing the Future of Girls’ Education Insights Report and Framework.

This report builds on decades of GDST expertise, alongside insights from academics, educators, pupils, and campaigners. It follows the landmark 2022 Girls’ Futures Report, which explored girls’ experiences growing up today and how education can support their ambitions.

The new Designing the Future of Girls’ Education report has outlined three key areas: Classroom, Curriculum and Culture.

The GDST’s research consistently highlights that girls are underrepresented in co-educational classrooms. But, as identified in this latest report, it’s not simply the provision of an all-girl environment that propels learning - there are many other factors to take into account.

The report highlights how essential it is to build girls’ confidence and encourage them to embrace challenges. Classrooms at NHSG are places where girls feel empowered to explore, question, and take risks. In an all-girls setting, we can

create an atmosphere that helps girls find their voice and develop the confidence to use it with conviction. By focusing on collaboration, discussion, and resilience, we help pupils build skills that will last a lifetime.

The school is passionate about giving girls the tools they need to succeed in an ever-changing world.

STEM features heavily in the report, with the authors saying there are still barriers to be removed for girls to fully enjoy and pursue STEM subjects and careers. That’s why at NHSG, the extensive programme proactively encourages STEM subject interest and a deep enjoyment and curiosity for STEM which is inherent in all girls.

The key theme in this section of the GDST’s report is the need for a culture that empowers and values individuals.

An empowering culture for girls’ education is one that strives to redress society’s gender imbalance, where the environment focuses entirely on the girls’ needs, and works to give girls the skills they need to be able to challenge inequality and the tools and voice they need to navigate life with resilience and self-belief.

The new GDST Designing the Future of Girls’ Education report is an inspiring reminder of why girls-only education is so powerful.

A SENSE OF PLACE

What makes Westfield a special place to belong?

Westfield is a small independent girls’ school in Gosforth. There is nothing generic about the education provided; everything is tailored to the individual and every girl is encouraged to be the person she is. The school is proudly non-selective; a balanced community helps students thrive, class sizes are deliberately small so no-one can hide and everyone is supported.

The school’s ‘Big Sister Little Sister’ programme plays a big part in the community and each new pupil entering Year 7 is allocated a ‘Big Sister’ from Year 12. Activities, such as mixed team dodgeball, crafts and parties take place throughout the year and are organised by the girls, for the girls. This interaction with their ‘Big Sister’ makes starting a new school less daunting. The school’s alumni often recall their ‘Little Sister’ or ‘ Big Sister’ and it’s a lovely connection that carries on through their time at Westfield and beyond.

‘Timetable Takeover’ creates a great buzz. The school’s Lower 6 students become teachers, delivering

scheduled lessons to Years 7 and 8. They are given guidance from teachers but the planning and execution is done completely by the girls. It helps build confidence, leadership and responsibility. By taking control of a class, they gain a clearer understanding of both communication and respect.

‘Stretch and Challenge’ is a series of programmes whereby each Key Stage has one challenge day per term, as well as a whole school challenge day. The tasks involved promote communication and team work and often push girls out of their comfort zone; they learn something new and feel a real sense of achievement.

Westfield is a member of Round Square, a global network of 250 likeminded schools. Round Square gives students the opportunity to collaborate, connect globally, swap and share resources, plan cultural trips and exchanges.

Westfield massively values selfdiscovery, providing the support needed for pupils to develop and to express themselves. Girls who are confident, outgoing, resilient and optimistic achieve great success academically and in everything they set out to do.

Small class sizes, broad horizons: life at Dame Allan’s Junior School…

Dame Allan’s Junior School is made distinctive by the red ‘nose’ that protrudes from the building. This houses their cosy Library space, and is the striking feature that welcomes children from Nursery to Year 6 each day.

The school embraces opportunity, encouraging pupils to explore curiously and learn passionately. This is exemplified in their outdoor Woodland Ways classroom, where pupils learn about and develop a respect for nature.

“Often, you’ll find a campfire and hot chocolate during lessons in the Woodland!” explains Mr Geoff Laider, Head of Dame Allan’s Junior School.

“We want our pupils to broaden their horizons, and ensure we give them access to as many experiences as possible.”

Inside the classrooms, STEM lessons begin in Nursery, with hands-on experiments (slime creation is a popular activity!). As pupils progress, STEM education continues to be prioritised, including a popular lunchtime Science

BIG BIRTHDAY

Celebrating 500 years of RGS…

This year, Royal Grammar School Newcastle is celebrating its Quincentenary and is inviting the local community to join its 500th events which will run from spring 2025 until spring 2026.

2025 marks 500 years since the founding legacy of the school. In 1525, Thomas Horsley, Mayor of Newcastle, wrote his will within which he generously gifted his estate to fund a grammar school. Whilst there is debate and mystery around the exact foundation of RGS Newcastle, Horsley’s philanthropic intention has long been connected with our school.

Over the coming months, the school

Club. Every pupil also has access to a Chromebook, helping them learn vital digital skills.

Additionally, healthy movement is championed with regular games lessons. Whilst success in competitive sports is common, more importance is given to encouraging every child to have a go; whether that is shooting in hockey, or trying out fencing in a co-curricular club.

Art, music, drama, and dance are also popular subjects, with the Junior School having recently formed its first dance company. These subjects enjoy dedicated timetabled space, with regular performances helping children to develop their confidence.

Year 5 and 6 pupils also benefit from weekly visits to the Senior School, located nearby in Fenham. Here, they can take advantage of state-of-the-art facilities in food tech, art and design tech lessons.

“We pride ourselves on our small class sizes and personalised approach,” continued Geoff. “Every child has their own passions and we work hard to support them to be the best version of themselves that they can be.”

How exhilarating

activities can cultivate resilience and determination in children...

As parents, we often wonder how to nurture resilience in our children - the ability to keep going even when things get tough, to face challenges head-on and to bounce back stronger. For me, one answer has unfolded over the years as I’ve watched my 10-year-old son thrive in an environment that has consistently tested both his physical and mental endurance: skiing. From the time he was just 12 months old, my son has been on skis and over the last nine years, he has developed not only his skills but also a sense of independence and confidence that I didn’t quite expect to see so early in life. This past ski season in Austria, circumstances led to an unusual situation: I was skiing with him alone as my 85 year old father, who usually joins

us, had to miss the trip due to emergency spinal surgery. There was also another big change; my son asked if he could ski without his usual ski school. As a result, it was just the two of us and the experience gave me an opportunity to reflect deeply on how we, as parents, can cultivate grit and resilience in our children - qualities that will serve them well throughout life.

Angela Duckworth, the renowned psychologist who has studied grit extensively, defines it as a combination of passion and perseverance. She suggests that grit is not simply about talent but about the willingness to work hard, to keep going despite challenges and to learn from failure. This pretty much sums up learning to ski! Building grit begins with competence -

the foundational skills that empower children to take on new challenges. This has certainly been the case with my son. Over the years, he’s progressed from being a toddler shuffling along on plastic skis to a confident skier who tackles steep black runs and off-piste terrain. The transformation was evident when he wanted to ski without the structure of a ski school. In the past, he had been in ski school from 10am - 3pm, learning from excellent instructors and having a blast in the process. This year, however, he wanted to take on more responsibility, choosing our runs, managing the day’s itinerary and, most importantly, making decisions for himself.

One of the most important lessons we can teach our children is how to take calculated, informed risks. As Jordan Peterson, clinical psychologist and author, puts it: “If you want to make your kids tough… you can’t interfere when they’re doing dangerous things carefully. If you interfere with that, you interfere with the process by which your children expand their competence and it takes courage not to interfere with that.”

This resonated deeply with me as I thought about the challenging conditions we faced during our holiday. There were days when the temperature dropped to -14°C and we had gusts of wind reaching 70 mph. Conditions were far from perfect, but it was these tough situations that taught my son resilience. As a parent, it’s a fine balance between allowing them to explore and ensuring their safety. It wasn’t about protecting him from danger entirely but about teaching him how to

Outstanding opportunities from start to finish.

navigate the challenges safely. One of the most important aspects of fostering resilience in children is giving them opportunities to make decisions. By giving them the chance to make choices, they learn how to weigh up pros and cons and develop problem-solving skills. This is true in skiing, but it’s also true in all aspects of life; these small decisions teach children how to be selfreliant. As Angela Duckworth notes: “Children are more competent than we give them credit for. And it’s crucial that we create opportunities for them to develop their grit and resilience by giving them the freedom to struggle and learn from failure.”

Living in the North East, where the weather can sometimes be unpredictable and harsh, has huge advantages. Planning family walks, braving the elements and finding outdoor activities in all kinds of weather are some of the ways we build our resilience.

Ultimately, resilience isn’t just about enduring hardship; it’s about learning to thrive in the face of difficulty.

Skiing, especially under challenging conditions, has been a perfect way to teach my son about grit and to help him embrace life with determination and a willingness to grow.

The skills and independence he’s developed over the years will stay with him long after the snow melts. And as parents, it’s our job to help them continually develop the skills they need to face the world with courage and determination.

As Duckworth puts it: “Grit is living life like it’s a marathon, not a sprint.”

Bright spark

From investment banking in London to shaping young minds in Newcastle, Natalie, Founder of The Florence, has built a tuition studio that blends academic excellence with creativity. The purpose-designed learning environment in Gosforth offers students a space to grow, explore, and succeed. Luxe checks in to discuss Natalie’s journey and what makes The Florence stand out in the world of tuition

What inspired you to leave investment banking and start The Florence Tuition Studio?

I worked at a major American Investment bank and I opted into a giving back scheme tutoring children in maths and finance. We had groups of inner city kids to tutor, and I loved it. Even though I really enjoyed my job, I found that I had the right personality to be a tutor. I know my stuff but it is much more than that; engaging children in subjects which they are adverse to, keeping it relevant and knowing the tricks so that they can grab the points. I handed my notice in and started tuition full time.

I have worked very hard and made great bonds with the families. I also garnered

a reputation for achieving the results and being a mentor. I was fortunate enough to work with the children of some A-list celebrities, government ministers and global musicians who are no better a family than anyone else, but they have access to the global sphere and greater finances.

How has COVID changed tuition? When in London, I had a need for setting up online tuition way before there was specific software and everyone was doing it. This was necessitated predominantly by the diplomatic families that travelled. It was a great resource in addition to the face-to-face work and up until COVID most of the work I did was online.

However, when COVID arrived, the lockdowns had an incredible effect in the gaps of knowledge but also the mindset of the children. I have noticed a huge shift in the mindset and temperament of this generation of children. I feel it is crucial to go back to the face to face model. Now the market is flooded with online tuition and there is a huge range of quality and experiences, the tuition market is unregulated and many find it a quick way to earn extra income but with varying success. This is why we invested heavily in having a tuition studio. We have the ideal setting for learning but also the softer skills, and motivation and drive, which are a crucial part of the process.

How did your time at Cambridge shape the way you approach education today? I loved Cambridge but was a duck out of water. There were only a handful of us from the North East and I only ever met one other northern female. The standard was incredible and I made a lot of very good friends who I am still in touch with today. The tutorial system is brilliant, small groups of like minded youngsters working together - and this is very much what I replicate at The Florence.

The Florence is known for its beautiful, purpose-designed space. How does the studio’s design, look and feel help with student learning and engagement? Foremost, it is a safe and welcoming space; it has been designed to enhance learning. We wanted to provide a tuition studio where parents are 100% confident their children are safe and that they are achieving a high quality for their investment.

It has two large studios, a kitchen area, tiered seating (think more Google than a lecture hall!). The children and their parents have all mentioned what a lovely inspiring space it is and we have had requests to start a parents maths club too.

You offer everything from GCSE tutoring to creative workshops. How do you strike the balance between academic success and creativity? Fundamentally our focus is on the academic side, but we also run games nights, creative courses and even a children’s sewing club. There is so much maths and science that can be taught through fun games, challenges and clubs.

I also don’t like to put kids in boxes (figuratively) and I can’t bear the notion that if you are good at science and maths, you are therefore poor at the arts and English. We can do what we want! We are all different. We can develop and enjoy and the other side of our brain is still firing, it’s not asleep!

What makes The Florence different from other tuition centres, and why do students here see such strong results?

Since COVID there is demand for focusing on child development as a whole. There is a great vibe here (their words!) and the children genuinely enjoy it. I have had parents comment, “they came straight home and did their homework - unheard of previously!”, “they are engaged and really enjoy coming”.

We also really get to know the students' best learning style and how they think. Schools have too big a remit and so cannot focus on this, however we can really work out what strategies work with the students and can relay that to the parents. It is very difficult to know as a parent how your child actually learns academic subjects.

How do you challenge your students to think outside the box?

This is a really difficult skill for pre-teens and teenagers to grasp. They don’t get much opportunity for this at school, but I think having a safe space where they can offer perhaps seemingly crazy ideas can lead to greatness. Here they can ask things that I know they wouldn’t dream of in a class at school. There isn’t the same sense of embarrassment here. All of the small groups are streamlined and members are chosen to be together. They naturally form bonds and work collaboratively which is wonderful to see.

Anything exciting in the plans for 2025?

We have just started a science club for the pre GCSE children and this is going well. We are entering the children in various UK contests and competitions and although they don’t need UCAS or a CV yet, it is great for their development.

What do you like to do when you are not tutoring?

I love art, languages and travelling to Europe. I have been brought up in the North East but I have Italian ancestors so I try to get to Tuscany every summer to catch up with family and friends. And finally, what would you say to students or parents looking into The Florence for tuition?

Come and have a look around. Get in touch, meet us and see what we do firsthand. We would love to hear from you.

Ingredients

185g The Groovy Food Company Organic Virgin Coconut Oil plus extra for greasing

185g best dark chocolate

3 large eggs

275g golden caster sugar

85g plain flour

40g cocoa powder

150g mini eggs

Method

Put the coconut oil and chocolate in a medium sized heatproof bowl and set over a pan of simmering water, stirring occasionally until melted.

Heat oven to 180°C/gas 4. Grease a 20cm square tin with butter and line with 2 long strips of folded baking paper or foil - one running top to bottom, the other left to right then line the base with a piece of baking paper. The strips will help later.

Break the eggs into a bowl and tip in the caster sugar.

Whisk the eggs and sugar until they look thick and creamy and have doubled in size.

Pour the cooled chocolate mixture over the egg mixture, then gently fold together.

Sieve the flour and cocoa into the wet ingredients then continue to fold the mixture gently with a spatula until everything is fully combined.

Pour the mixture into the prepared tin and level the mixture with the spatula. Put in the middle of the oven and bake for 20 minutes.

Crush a few of the mini eggs but leave some whole. After 20 mins take the brownie out of the oven and press in the mini eggs, cut side up. Scatter over half of the mini eggs too and put back into the oven for a further 5 minutes.

Once baked, top with the remaining Mini Eggs, leave to cool and then place in the fridge for an hour to firm up.

A WATCHFUL EYE

with Josh Sims

The art of collaboration in the world of watch-making...

“I think what works about a collaboration like this is that it allows the watch brand to really go officially off-piste with its design,” says Tej Chauhan, the industrial designer behind everything from cutlery to hair-dryers, and one of five selected to produce their take on Rado’s True Square watch.

“And I wanted a design that made people say ‘f**k me, what’s that?!’, to pay attention and get talking. There wasn’t any point if the resulting watch wasn’t different. It would just be another watch otherwise.”

That certainly can’t be said for Chauhan’s design, with its 60s sci-fi inflections and, most strikingly of all, the fact that the case and padded leather strap are in a brighter shade of yellow. Yet it’s one of the brand’s best-sellers.

“Maybe that makes room for Rado to do other watches in a similar vein,” says Chauhan.

It’s the kind of collaborative success that has echoes back through watchmaking history over the second half of the 20th century and beyond. Many of the most innovative and/or memorable watches have been the result of work, not by watch designers who have only ever designed watches - sometimes having worked their way up through the echelons of a single company - but of industrial designers versed in applying processes of ideation and a broad appreciation of materials and function turning their consideration to what a watch could be, aesthetically, functionally. Many become brand icons.

For example, Movado’s Museum Watch, with its single golden ‘sun’ at the 12 o’clock position, was designed by the RussianAmerican designer Nathan George Horwitt. Max Bill, the Swiss architect and artist, began a long relationship with Junghans which started in 1956 - the company is still making his minimalistic designs, the likes of the Chronoscope, today. And the French watch manufacturer LIP effectively established its signature look - asymmetric cases and big, colourful pushers - through its work with the industrial designer Roger Tallon, who also designed projectors for Kodak and TGV high-speed trains for France. There are many more examples too.

Giorgetto Giugiaro, the car designer behind the Maserati Ghibli, the VW Golf and the DeLorean of ‘Back to the Future’ fame, as well as cameras for Nikon and firearms for Beretta, also designed a number of distinctively asymmetrical Spirit chronographs for Seiko, considered so futuristic it’s what Sigourney Weaver’s Ripley wears in ‘Alien’. Post-modernist architect Michael Graves designed a number of watches for, tellingly, the likes of Pierre Junod - a company that has made a specialism of collaborating with young designers - and Alessi, which isn’t known for watches at all. Think too of Pierre Cardin, Dieter Rams or Jacob Jensen.

Indeed, each decade seems to have its industrial designer watch moment. In 1994 multi-disciplinary designer Marc Newsonwho learned how to design watches hands-on coming up with his first watch

aged 23 and then making 100 of them himself - co-founded the Ikepod brand, which led to the likes of the Hemipode, with its pebble-like case and integrated strap; while in 2010 Hermes commissioned the architect Marc Berthier - best known for his rubber-wrapped Tykho radio for Lexon - to create the limited edition Carre H, with its rounded square titanium case.

And all with good reason.

“Watch brands often say their focus is on making extraordinary movements - and they are amazing - but often it can seem that nobody outside of their industry is showing them what else might be possible [with their designs],” says Vincent Fourdrinier, one time designer of cars for the likes of Peugeot and Mitsubishi, and latterly of watches for the likes of Christophe Claret, including of pioneering uses of carbon fibre and sapphire crystal.

“The fact is that the watch industry can be afraid of change - newness for many makers is just the same model in a new colour,” he chuckles. “So it sometimes turns to industrial designers to help it embrace genuinely new ideas, to help move everything forward. But it’s a slow process. Just look at how the industry laughed at the idea of the Apple watch…”

Acclaimed British product designer Ross Lovegrove agrees. He’s the man behind the HU ‘anatomical’ watch for Issey Miyake and who was, for six years, the chief design officer of Tag Heuer, for which he designed the flippable analogue/digital Monaco 69, and a super-light, clasp-less golf watch.

“When I first started working with Tag Heuer they looked at my concepts and told me that ‘you clearly have no idea how to design watches’,” he laughs.

“As with chairs and lamps, I think most industrial designers want to have a go at mechanical watches too. In the end all that calibration towards performance is about excellence in jewellery really, because take that away and you have a Swatch.”

Not that industrial designers don’t often find attempting to design a watch challengingconsidering how its look and function need to be in sync, how it has to be comfortable to wear and easy to use, and so on. Indeed, over recent decades other design superstars, from Philippe Starck to Frank Gehry and Zaha Hadid, have all taken a crack at designing watches, not all of which have made it into production.

“When you look at the history of watchmaking not many people from outside of the industry have had an influence on watch design, and, in fact, not many designers outside of the industry have been particularly successful with a design either,” argues Christian-Louis Col, Ikepod’s owner.

“You really need to appreciate the fine technical issues, the construction, and a vast majority of designs by non-watch designers tend to be unfeasible.”

Certainly Eric Giroud agrees that, because of this unusual mix of material and mythology, watch design can all be harder than it looks. Giroud - the man behind many watches, from the avant-garde for MB&F, to more traditional looks for the likes of Vacheron Constantin and Tissot, among othersstarted out designing everything from lamps to mobile phones before the design agency at which he worked was tasked with designing a watch. He took the project on because nobody else wanted to.

“It’s not just a coincidence that many of the most striking watch designs [of recent times] have come from industrial designers, I think because they necessarily have a more open-mind to design possibilities,” suggests Giroud, who contends that the shyness with which major brands employ designers from other disciplines - there’s often a reluctance to even publicly admit that they do - is “to close themselves off from another point of view, one which can result in some very cool products. The fact is that [external] designers or artists haven’t been stuck in the culture of one brand for years.”

Certainly the watch industry - never one to make stars of its own designers - is, naturally, not always open to having its conventions questioned.

“You know, it’s very difficult to knock on the door of a prominent company and say ‘this is what I propose you do’! It’s very pretentious. It’s a delicate situation and you will never be recognised for your talent,” as Gerald Genta, arguably the world’s most acclaimed specialist watch designer once put it.

“When he started his work he was going round the different factories with his designs and was even asked ‘yes, but do watches need designers?’,” as his wife Evelyn Genta recalled in 2013.

Nor is everyone convinced that the watch industry’s occasional recourse to designers from other disciplines is necessarily well-intended. Benoit Mintiens has, in his time, designed prams, trains and aircraft cabin interiors, and was inspired to launch his brand Ressence after a dispiriting visit to a major watch trade fair “at which it seemed everybody was just doing the same thing,” he recalls. He laments that the so-called Quartz crisis of the late 1960swhen the mechanical watch-making industry suddenly found its product outmoded and seemingly out-dated - saw the importance and relevance of progressive products in the watch industry side-lined in favour of branding.

“And a brand, to be fair, is what most watch customers want,” he says, though he believes that there is a growing, if niche, number of increasingly design-literate customers who do seek to put the product first - “its ergonomics, its ideas, something that belongs to the present.

“But right now I’m not convinced that many companies’ use of external [industrial] designers demonstrates a change of approach. To me they seem to use them as they might Brad Pitt or those half naked girls they used to put next to cars at auto shows - to talk up their super boring products,” laughs Mintiens.

It sometimes turns to industrial designers to help embrace genuinely new ideas, to help move everything forward. But it’s a slow process

High flyer

Over a cup of Ringtons tea in NALjets’ sleek Newcastle Airport hangar, Elysia Fryer sits down with Director and Captain Craig McLeod to talk all things private aviation

From his lifelong love of flying to the seamless service that keeps high-profile clients coming back, Craig lifts the lid on what makes NALjets a standout in the skies. Stepping into the world of private aviation is like entering an exclusive club - one with a focus on discretion, reliability and seamless service. And if there’s one company that embodies all of the above, it’s NALjets. Based at Newcastle Airport, this North East-born-and-bred business has been setting the gold standard for private jet travel for over two decades, offering an effortless and luxurious way to fly - whether

you’re a high-powered business executive, a jet-setting holidaymaker, or a company needing urgent, high-priority transport. With a fleet of meticulously maintained aircraft, a reputation built on trust, and a team of experts who live and breathe aviation, NALjets is the North East’s go-to operator for those who expect nothing but the best. We spent the day in their Newcastle Airport hangar, sipping tea with Director and Captain Craig McLeod and Ground Operations Manager Jon Rasmussen, swooning over their pristine fleet, and talking about all things private aviation. What we found? A business driven by passion, expertise, and a love

for making the impossible look effortless.

Craig McLeod’s aviation story is one of experience, hard work, and an unrelenting love for flying.

“We’ve worked very hard for a long time, since we went commercial in 1999,” he tells me, reflecting on the journey that has brought NALjets to where it is today.

“I started out with a little Cessna propeller doing hospital jobs and medical work. We ran a lot of the stuff for the Freeman Hospital, and then we moved into business jets, flying all over the world in the oil and gas industry. We’ve been back in the North East doing charter for the last five years or so, but we’ve always been based in Newcastle - around 26 years now.”

The company’s expertise extends far beyond charter flights.

“We still do a lot of deliveries. If an aircraft gets sold from Europe to America, we take it across the Atlantic. We work with a lot of business people, footballers, ultra-high-net-

Craig McLeod’s aviation story is one of experience, hard work, and an unrelenting love for flying

worths, and a few famous people.

“We get a right old mix, which is great.”

But what sets NALjets apart isn’t just the exclusivity of the client list - it’s their ability to make private travel completely stress-free, without the flash or fuss often associated with the industry.

“It’s a luxury taxi, really,” Craig says with a smile.

“It saves people a huge amount of time, and it’s a much more pleasant experiencewalking through an FBO lounge and onto a jet, rather than going through an airport terminal. We can whisk people away easily and effortlessly, whether it’s a holiday, or to a home away from home somewhere.”

When it comes to private jet travel, time is money, and NALjets ensures every flight is as smooth as possible. Their fleet includes the Cessna Citation CJ3+, a light jet with a range of over 2,000 miles, making trips to the Algarve, the Balearics, and the Adriatic a breeze.

“The CJ3+ is technically an eight-seater, but we’ve got it as a seven, and it’s a comfortable six. It’ll do Newcastle right the way down to Faro at full pelt with six passengers.”

Then there’s the Citation CJ, designed for agile, regional travel across the UK and Europe, and the Diamond DA62, a twin-engine aircraft that combines luxury with state-of-the-art aerodynamics.

“We fly a little bit higher than the big passenger aircrafts - around 43,000 to 45,000 feet - up in the nice smooth air,” Craig explains.

“It makes all the difference.”

But beyond the aircraft themselves, the key to NALjets’ success is their seamless, behind-the-scenes coordination. The team is on hand to handle every detail - from arranging private terminal access to ensuring a client’s favourite bottle of wine is waiting on board.

“Passengers will come to the FBO, where they can turn up, park their car, use the facilities, have a drink, and then board the jet. Wherever we go in the UK or Europe, we land at another private terminal. It’s all very seamless,” Craig says.

“If we go to Paris, we won’t go to Charles de Gaulle - we’ll go to Le Bourget, which is the smaller, business jet airport. If we go to London, we’ll go to Biggin Hill rather than Heathrow. The smaller, bespoke private jet airports are great.”

In peak season, the team is constantly working to accommodate client requests. “In the summer, we’re sending out quotes all the time. We get requests from clients, businesses, travel agents, personal assistants and brokers. A quote will come in, and then we’ll work out if our crew and aircraft are available and in the right location, or we source an aircraft from a

fellow operator. Basically, we can get any aircraft to do any job, for any purpose, at any time.”

That industry-wide network is what ensures NALjets never lets a client down.

“From the first bank holiday in May, we’re constantly on the go pretty much until the end of December. Between January and May, we do a lot of maintenance and crew training, catching up and preparing for the busy months.”

The level of service they provide is second to none.

“We check in to see if there are any specific dietary requirements, or if they have any special requests for the flight. It’s all about making it as stress-free as possible.”

“We also like to stay true to our North East roots. We’ve got Ringtons Tea on the aircraft, and we love a bit of Greggs!”

The privacy aspect of private aviation is something Craig and his team take seriously.

“People come to us because they can trust us. We keep it under the radar and get the job done. In business, you’ve got to be really careful when it comes to letting people know where a certain jet is - I learnt that when I was working in the oil and gas industry. If a competitor was in the know about where one of their jets was going, it would cause a lot of problems.”

But that doesn’t mean they don’t enjoy the lighter side of the job.

“We try to have fun with what we do. We’ll have a laugh with customers, but it’s always

professional. We’re just nice guys offering a service.”

And yes, pets are more than welcome on board.

“We often fly Paco, the 40kg German Shepherd,” Craig laughs. “The owner of our jet has Bonnie the Cocker Spaniel - she’s better travelled than any of us! I once did a charter specifically for a dog - I delivered a Golden Retriever puppy to Jersey during Covid. We weren’t even allowed off the plane, we had to hand over the dog in a stormtrooper suit! He was lush.”

For Craig, aviation has always been more than just a job - it’s a passion.

“I started out as a jeweller,” he starts.

“I’m a goldsmith by trade. That developed into me being a delivery pilot, taking planes to be engineered when they needed a service. That just grew, and suddenly I had a twin-engine aeroplane that I rented out.

Before I knew it, I was flying jets, then got into the oil and gas sector. Now, after all these years, we have our own jet, but we still manage other people’s planes too. We are aviation experts.”

With a reputation built on trust, a team of seasoned professionals, and a genuine passion for what they do, NALjets isn’t just a private aviation company - it’s the North East’s premier gateway to the skies. And for those who demand excellence in every journey, there’s simply no better way to fly.

The start of the year has been incredibly hectic on the work front. With the January Transfer Window in full swing, I was hosting Good Morning Sports Fans and the Transfer Talk podcast for Sky Sports, both of which kept me on my toes. This year, Premier League clubs spent around £270m more than in January 2024, making it one of the most active transfer periods. It was an exciting month for fans across the country, but for Newcastle United, the focus was a little different. While other clubs were splashing the cash, Newcastle opted for a quieter window, with no new faces arriving at St James’ Park. Instead, the club decided to focus on player departures, with Lloyd Kelly and Miguel Almirón moving on. It was a strategic decision, I believe, with a view towards the summer window. I wouldn’t be surprised if the club is saving up for some major reinforcements come the summer. In the meantime, the team’s performances on the pitch have been really encouraging. They’ve been on great form, and fans have a lot to look forward to, especially with the Carabao Cup Final on the horizon.

The Carabao Cup Final against Liverpool on 16 March is a huge milestone for the club. I’ll be attending the match with my family, and it promises to be a memorable day. When Newcastle reached the final two years ago, I went with my son, and while the experience was fantastic, it was hard not to feel disappointed by the result. This time, however, I’m hopeful that we might finally see the end of the club’s 70-year wait for a major domestic trophy. The last time Newcastle lifted silverware was in 1969, so the fans are certainly ready for a new chapter. But it won’t be easy.

Liverpool, who are having an exceptional season, are currently sitting at the top of the Premier League and dominating in Europe. It’s going to be a tough challenge for Eddie Howe and the team, but if there’s one thing that Newcastle fans know, it’s that anything can happen on the day.

Living luxe

Away from the pitch, January was a more laid-back month at home, but February has been all about getting out and enjoying some quality family time. We made sure to escape the hustle and bustle for a week of skiing in Avoriaz, which was nothing short of amazing. There’s something really special about hitting the slopes, especially

when you’re with family. Me, Steph, and all three kids had an absolute blast - there’s no better feeling than spending time together in the mountains. Back home in the North East, we’ve also been spending more time outdoors. We’ve been taking the dog on regular trips to Northumberlandia, where we enjoy the beautiful landscapes before grabbing a bite at The Snowy Owl in Cramlington. It’s become a lovely routine for us.

On the family front, I couldn’t be more proud of my son, who has been excelling at football. He was selected for the Newcastle School Boys team, and seeing his hard work pay off has been incredibly rewarding. It’s a great reminder that sports are about so much more than just the game - it’s about growth and building confidence, both on and off the pitch.

Ask Pete

Q: Can you give us a match prediction for the NUFC v Liverpool Carabao Cup Final in March?

A: It’s shaping up to be an exciting match. Both teams have exceptional attacking talent, so I expect plenty of goals! The last time these two sides met at St James’ Park, we saw an exhilarating 3-3 draw, with Fabian Schär scoring a dramatic last-minute equaliser. I wouldn’t be surprised if the final unfolds in a similar fashion at Wembley. One thing is for sure: Eddie Howe’s side will need to be on top of their game, especially when it comes to dealing with Mohamed Salah. He’s been phenomenal this season and is one of the standout players in English football right now. Keeping him quiet will be key to Newcastle’s chances. But with a bit of luck and our best team on the fieldfeaturing players like Alexander Isak, Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali, and Bruno GuimarãesI’m optimistic that Newcastle can make history and secure a long-awaited victory!

Monaco moment

For the first time in the nearly 100-year history of the Grand Prix de Monaco, the 2025 race will have a title partner, with TAG Heuer proud to hold this special honour.

In the 75th year of Formula 1, and as TAG Heuer returns as ‘Official Timekeeper’ for the sport, it further reinforces the incredible connection between the famed Swiss watchmaker, the top-tier of motor racing and one of the most famous races on the calendar.

With a shared story interwoven across decades, Monaco and TAG Heuer are connected not only by the world of motorsport, but also the famed TAG Heuer Monaco collection and personalities that have made the race so famous. Monte-Carlo is referred to as the spiritual home of TAG Heuer, and the contemporary story is defined by the strong presence during F1 weekend, making it only natural for the race to now be known as the Formula 1 TAG Heuer Grand Prix de Monaco.

A second home

While the traditional watches of TAG Heuer are made in Switzerland, the company has become a cultural force taking on a global identity. With boutiques located around the world, ambassadors and advertising campaigns that can be seen in every city, and the presence in different sports across continents, there is only one place that the

TAG Heuer makes history as the first-ever title partner of the Grand Prix de Monaco, solidifying its deep ties to the race and the principality. In 2025, the Swiss watchmaker takes centre stage at one of F1’s most iconic events, marking a new chapter in its legacy of precision and motorsport excellence

brand has a special connection to, Monaco. Since the presence of drivers such as Jochen Rindt, Jo Siffert, Niki Lauda and Ronnie Peterson in the 1960s and 1970s, who would become style icons and wore Heuer chronographs around the track, to the incredible rivalries and victories of Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna of the 1980s and 1990s, who would dominate in Monaco at the wheel of TAG Heuer sponsored McLarens, TAG Heuer’s connection to the circuit on the Côte d’Azur is undeniable. The late 1990s and 2000s would see Mika Häkkinen, David Coulthard, Kimi Räikkönen, and Lewis Hamilton victorious on the streets of Monaco, all with TAG Heuer on their wrist as they took the top step of the podium. In recent years Daniel Ricciardo, Max Verstappen and Sergio Pérez have won against strong competition with TAG Heuer alongside them through the sponsorship of Oracle Red Bull Racing.

Elavating a partnership

TAG Heuer has been a partner of the Automobile Club de Monaco since 2011, present at key moments through the Formula 1 weekend and at the Grand Prix de Monaco Historique. With this new relationship, the story will be further reinforced through increased presence for TAG Heuer across all assets relating to the race, including significant trackside placement visible for those at the race on the streets of Monaco and on screens around the world.

this key moment in motorsport history and will be used across all touchpoints where TAG Heuer will be present. Another key element will be the iconic TAG Heuer Monaco clocks that will be displayed throughout the paddock, a new fixture for Formula 1 in 2025.

Beyond the Formula 1 race, TAG Heuer is excited to be continuing its connection to the Grand Prix de Monaco Historique as Official Timekeeper, with the next event taking place in 2026. As a new addition this year, TAG Heuer is also the partner of the Rallye Monte-Carlo Historique and this will continue as part of the multi-year deal with the Automobile Club de Monaco.

“It has been a pleasure to work with such a celebrated watchmaker for nearly 15 years now, and our admiration and respect for TAG Heuer is reiterated through our new agreement to continue our wonderful relationship,” says Maître Michel Boeri, President of the Automobile Club de Monaco.

“As the watch synonymous with motorsport and the greatest drivers in the history of Formula 1, it is only natural that the Automobile Club de Monaco would choose to be indelibly connected with TAG Heuer.”
