WINTER PLANNING, SPRING RESULTS

While the final weekend of school holidays brought a more subdued pace, activity across our offices remained encouraging, particularly for this time of year. What we are seeing now is less about immediate transactions and more about considered preparation. The majority of our conversations are with homeowners actively planning for a spring campaign, engaging early to ensure they are ahead of the competition once the market gathers full momentum.

This type of pre-planning has become a consistent pattern over recent years, and it is one we encourage. Vendors who take the time now to prepare — from securing styling advice, undertaking minor improvements, or working through a tailored sales strategy — tend to achieve stronger outcomes once listings increase in spring.

We are also witnessing strong buyer interest in select areas despite limited available stock. Motivated purchasers continue to attend open homes and engage in off-market discussions, which reinforces our belief that buyer demand remains healthy, even during the traditionally quieter winter weeks.

As we look ahead, there is no doubt that the pre-spring window, from late July to August, will become increasingly competitive as campaigns begin to launch. Those who are ready will benefit from increased visibility and buyer engagement.

If you are considering a sale this spring, now is the perfect time to reach out to your local Marshall White team to organise a strategy conversation and make the most of the weeks ahead. ■

IN CONVERSATION WITH

Trit House

We spoke with Ivan Yoong, founder and director of Trit House, about the brand’s design philosophy, global influences, and what’s next for the Australian favourite known for its refined minimalism and curated lifestyle offering.

Trit House has a strong identity in the Australian design world. What inspired you to start the brand, and what did you want to offer the market?

Trit House was born from a desire to bring globally inspired design to Australian homes. With my family's background in furniture retail overseas, I was passionate about introducing unique, design-forward pieces to the Australian market. Our aim was to curate and create collections that blend contemporary aesthetics with warmth and longevity, offering Australians access to thoughtfully designed furniture that resonates with their lifestyles.

Your collections reflect a strong appreciation for global design influences. How do international trends and cultural aesthetics shape the creative direction of Trit House?

Our creative direction is deeply influenced by international design movements, particularly the refined minimalism of Scandinavian and Japanese aesthetics. We draw inspiration from global design fairs, architecture, and art. This approach allows us to create pieces that are globally informed yet locally relevant, ensuring our collections remain timeless.

Trit House is renowned for its clean lines and high-quality materials. How do design, materials, and craftsmanship work together in your pieces?

Our design philosophy centres on the harmony of form, materiality, and craftsmanship. We prioritise natural materials like solid timber and stone, valuing their inherent beauty and durability. Our commitment to quality and simplicity allows the furniture to seamlessly integrate into various spaces, enhancing the everyday living experience.

How do you envision the relationship between your furniture pieces and the way people live with them day to day? What experience do you hope to create in the homes of your customers?

We design our furniture to be lived with and loved over time. Our pieces are meant to support daily rituals and stand up to busy family dinners. By focusing on comfort, functionality, and aesthetics, we aim to create environments where people feel at ease and inspired. Our Hawthorn flagship showroom embodies this vision, offering customers a tangible sense of how our furniture can transform their living spaces.

What’s next for Trit House? Are there any new ideas or projects on the horizon?

We're entering an exciting new chapter with the upcoming launch of our dedicated Wendelbo showroom on Church Street in Richmond, opening in August 2025. It’s a brand we’ve proudly partnered with for over a decade, and creating a standalone space where clients can fully immerse themselves in the Wendelbo world feels like a natural and meaningful step forward.

The showroom will showcase the full breadth of Wendelbo’s range in a setting that reflects the brand’s Scandinavian sensibility. It’s a privilege to bring this vision to life and offer design-conscious Australians a deeper connection with the brands they love.

At the same time, we remain focused on curating long-lasting pieces that reflect our commitment to inspired living. As our showrooms grow — whether in Brisbane, Sydney, or here in Melbourne — so does our ability to offer truly inspiring spaces. ■

KATE RYAN CHANGE MAKERS

This month, our Change Makers series features Kate Ryan, the visionary founder of Alepp, a social enterprise built around traditional Syrian soap. With a mission to merge compassion with commerce, Kate's journey shows how innovative ideas can generate change and hope.

What inspired you to found Alepp, and how did the Asylum Seekers Resource Centre influence this direction?

As a volunteer, I experienced firsthand the great work that the ASRC does, which inspired me to try to do more. I wanted to build a business that would provide organisations like the ASRC with a diversified income stream beyond donations. I had also used traditional Aleppo soap for years because I have sensitive skin, but it was hard to find in Australia, so, the two ideas converged in a small business called Alepp!

With your background in senior management within the corporate sector, how have you applied your experience to Alepp?

It was quite challenging because, suddenly, I found myself doing everything without any support functions. However, I believe this situation helped me focus on the commercial side of the business. Although Alepp is a registered charity, our goal is to generate enough revenue to cover our costs and distribute the remaining profits to the ASRC. For us, profit is king! Having a background in communications also helps me tell our story, which is crucial for building trust with customers.

Could you share how your principle of "One idea. Two ingredients. Endless hope." has influenced Alepp's approach to creating a product with significant community impact?

One of the key drivers of Alepp is simplicity. What we do is quite straightforward, and by keeping things simple, we reduce costs and waste, which in turn delivers the most positive impact. The phrase "endless hope" refers to the belief that our actions, no matter how small, can have a positive impact. And to be honest, you need to have bucketloads of hope to be in a small business at the moment!

Alepp is dedicated to allocating 100% of its profits to programs that support asylum seekers and refugees. Could you explain how this decision embodies Alepp's mission and values?

Supporting refugees and asylum seekers in Australia is the founding principle of Alepp and the reason we exist. Everything we do is focused on this goal, and having such a singular focus actually makes it easier to make decisions.

The Asylum Seeker Resource Centre plays a significant role in supporting people seeking asylum in Australia. How does Alepp align with the objectives of ASRC, and how do you see this partnership evolving?

The ASRC is Australia’s largest human rights organisation providing support to people seeking asylum. While we have no formal connection with ASRC, we share their objectives and support them however we can. Once the business is profitable, we will donate 100% of profits to their programs.

Sourcing Aleppo soap from Syria supports traditional soap makers affected by war. Can you discuss the impact this has on these communities and the importance of preserving traditional craftsmanship?

Sourcing the soap directly from Syria has been extremely difficult due to the dictatorship there. For 18 months, I worked with a Syrian refugee in Istanbul named Mohammad to source the soaps from the best factories in Aleppo, Syria. Then, we spent six months in 2022 without any soap to sell due to challenges in exporting the soap from Syria. We try our hardest to support those still operating in Syria, but this may change in the future as many factories are relocating to Northern Türkiye. ■
