PRESIDENT’S REPORT
The Australasian Cemeteries and Crematoria Association (ACCA) exists to provide leadership, professional development, communication, and networking opportunities for the cemetery and crematorium industry. Our mission is to ensure that you, our members, have the support and resources needed to serve your communities in their time of need.
Whether you work in a cemetery, a funeral home, or as one of our invaluable suppliers, your contribution is essential. You each play a vital role in helping families navigate one of the most difficult moments in their lives. The work you do makes the experience of losing a loved one just that little bit easier, and for that, we thank you.
One area the board and I feel particularly passionate about is the development of training for the sector. By sourcing and developing high-quality training, we not only support our members by providing them with the necessary skills to serve their communities, but we also set new benchmarks for best practice. Training is key to attracting, upskilling, and retaining talent within the industry, ensuring the long-term sustainability of our sector.
We are thrilled to announce the launch of the new ACCA Online Learning Hub. This platform has been developed in collaboration with Relationships Australia Victoria and is designed to be an invaluable resource for all industry professionals. The Learning Hub provides access to:
• Online courses
• Live webinars
• Podcasts
• Industry news
• Training videos
• Self-paced courses
• And much more
We are committed to continually investing in and expanding this resource by adding new courses and materials to ensure it meets your evolving needs. Our vision is for this platform to become the go-to resource for all professionals in the cemetery and crematoria sector.
In addition to the Learning Hub, the ACCA team and board have been working closely with various Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) and skills councils to bring accredited training to our industry. We believe that formal, industry-recognised training is essential to maintaining high standards and fostering professional growth.
The board has also been actively developing industry-based advisory committees to facilitate collaboration and address common challenges. One of our key initiatives is the establishment of the National Safety Advisory Committee. This committee has already held its initial meetings and is working on several projects aimed at improving safety standards across the sector. Updates on these initiatives will be shared via ACCA News, the Learning Hub, and at our conferences.
You may also notice some changes to our logo and branding. As part of our strategic review, the board felt it was time for a refresh to align with ACCA’s evolving direction. The updated logo and lighter, fresher colours reflect a shift in societal views on death-moving towards a celebration of life rather than the traditionally sombre image of the past.
The past year has been a period of significant progress, and we are excited about the opportunities ahead. As we continue to evolve, our focus remains on strengthening member benefits, fostering collaboration, and ensuring the cemetery and crematoria sector is wellequipped for the future.
Thank you for your continued support and dedication to the industry. We look forward to working together to build a stronger, more connected, and highly skilled sector.
Yours Sincerely
Lauren Hardgrove ACCA President

Additionally, delegates will have the chance to visit some of Sydney’s most iconic cemeteries, offering a fascinating look into the city’s rich history and heritage.
In addition to these exciting visits, we are planning a guided tour through the Royal Botanic Gardens, and an adventurous opportunity to climb the Harbour Bridge – an experience that’s sure to be a highlight!
We’re also working hard to secure an impressive lineup of speakers for the event. We are pleased to announce that accomplished broadcast journalist Tony Nichols from Good Talent Media will be joining us to deliver a workshop on crisis management and navigating the media during challenging times.
Additionally, we are excited to welcome internationally recognised, award-winning safety speaker and author, James Wood. James will deliver an unmissable talk on how the choices we make at work can lead

The board and team at ACCA are thrilled to announce that registration is officially open for the 2025 ACCA Mid-Year Event, set to take place on 16th and 17th of July! This year’s event promises to be an incredible opportunity, spread over two unique and exciting locations.
Day 1: Mt Gravatt Cemetery, Brisbane
Our first stop will be at the historic Mt Gravatt Cemetery, one of Brisbane’s most active cemeteries, serving a diverse range of cultural and community groups across South East Queensland. This 100-year-old cemetery provides a perfect backdrop for a day filled with valuable insights, learning, and networking.
We are delighted to feature some incredible speakers for Day 1:
Sach, from Metropolitan Memorial Parks (NSW), returns to lead a demonstration on Monument Safety & Conservation Programme. He will guide us through Mt Gravatt Cemetery, discussing key safety issues to look for when inspecting monuments and highlighting compliance issues with Australian Standards.

Alan will share his powerful and personal story of the long-term impacts of workplace injuries. His candid conversation will be an eye-opener for all, shedding light on the unseen effects of work-related accidents and how they change everything.
Dr Mohammed Iqbal Sultan – Muslim Funeral Services Ltd
Dr Sultan will provide a deep dive into Muslim burial practices and cultural traditions. As the primary cemetery for Muslim burials in SE QLD, Mt Gravatt Cemetery offers the perfect setting for learning how to set up and prepare grave sites to meet the needs of this growing community.
We’re still finalising details for a few more exciting speakers, so stay tuned for updates!
In addition to these sessions, we’ll have a trade show where you can meet suppliers, check out new equipment, and explore innovative products for the sector.

SOLDIER ARCHITECTS OF THE AUCKLAND WAR MEMORIAL MUSEUM
Auckland Museum is a landmark destination for visitors to New Zealand, telling our story through its caring curation of art, nature, and society. It’s a story that ranges from the time before humans first set foot in Aotearoa right through the epoch of Māori and European settlement and on into the modern age.
And that’s just on the inside. The museum building itself tells a story as an outstanding example of New Zealand architecture whose origin is rooted in the loss and pain of the First World War.
It begins in 1920, when alongside the public’s deeply felt need to honour soldiers lost during the war, the city needed a new space for its brimming Princes Street museum. The solution was to construct a new integrated complex in the Auckland Domain. It was to be the city’s key landmark and a quintessential touchstone, evoking what it means to be an Aucklander. The only question remaining was who should design it.
To answer this, the Institute of British Architects funded a worldwide architectural competition. The standard called for nothing less than “a noble and dignified building suitable for a WAR MEMORIAL…which will also form a worthy repository for the Collections of the Auckland Museum, including its unrivalled Māori Treasures….”
Out of seventy-four entries from across the globe, the winner was the Auckland team of Hugh Grierson, Kenneth Aimer and Keith Draffin.
Their Greek-inspired design was certainly a marvellous conception, but just as important, the three men bore the spiritual gravity of combat veterans. “Soldier Architects” was the headline in The New Zealand Herald’s announcement of their achievement.
And rightly so. Grierson fought in France and lost a brother at Gallipoli; Aimer was wounded (twice) and lost his brother too; Draffin (also wounded) was among the last men to leave Anzac Cove when Gallipoli was evacuated.
These were not just architects—they were young men who only months before were combat soldiers.
Purewa Cemetery has close ties to the museum and to the architects. All three men are buried there as is Archbishop Walter Averill, who consecrated the Cenotaph at the musuem’s opening.
Other connections include renowned museum botanist and illustrator Ellen Cheeseman and her taxidermist sister, Emma, whose work was important to the early development of the museum.
Moreover, the museum’s Hall of Memories features interactive displays of half a dozen more Purewa notables such as aviation pioneer George Bolt or the touching personal diaries of veteran William Smallfield and the recollections of decorated battlefield nurse Cora Beattie Anderson. All and more are buried at Purewa, which invites museum visitors to visit and pay their respects to all these remarkable Aucklanders.

A Vision for Emissions Reduction
While we celebrate our achievements, we must also focus on the future. The global push for carbon reduction and emissions control is more pressing than ever. Our newly installed Enfield facility represents a pioneering step in Australia, designed to meet evolving environmental standards. At FT, we recognise the importance of transforming our operations to meet these future demands, ensuring we continue to provide our customers with the best options available.
Introducing the FT IV Multifuel Cremator
In response to changing needs, we are thrilled to introduce the FT IV Cremator. This innovative multifuel cremator can operate on electric, gas, or both, showcasing our commitment to flexibility and customer choice.
As preferences for fuel sources evolve, the FT IV is poised to adapt, ensuring our clients have the tools they need to meet their requirements.
Embracing Technology and Innovation
Innovation has always been at the heart of our mission. Our investments extend beyond physical machines; we are also focused on technological advancements that streamline operations and enhance convenience for crematoria operators. The future of technology in our industry is bright, and we are dedicated to continuous improvement to ensure our products remain the best on the market.

FINAL TOUCH 20 YEAR ANNIVERSARY
Twenty years ago Jennie’s father had just passed away (days earlier) when she got a call from Lee Trevail to say that she was out of a job and H Trevail and Sons (a Sydney based coffin manufacturer and at the time Jennie’s employer) would be closing. Days later, Jennie all but purchased the moulds to the coffin hardware and other equipment and started Final Touch Australia (FTA) on the 14th of February 2005.
From our humble beginnings operating out of a small warehouse and a home office with one employee, just herself, and a goal of reaching 5-7 years in business. To the three warehouses and 16 staff it is today. It is humbling to know that our small family business that started 20 years ago has become a household name across the industry in Australia. Even more humbling is seeing our cremation urns in the homes of people we know and love, so they can take their loved one’s home in a way that speaks to their relationship, personality and style.
While it was rewarding to make a difference to the operations of a funeral professional and still is, it wasn’t until the addition of urns that Jennie truely felt connected to the difference our range made in the lives of those grieving. To know that what FTA did, had such an impact on the entire process of farewelling and memorialising a loved one. Since then, with the addition of The Grief Shelf Range and now the Take A Moment range this feeling is even more evident.
Jennie worked in the industry for 11 years before she took on the task of FTA and many times was asked if she was the one assisting Lionel in the business, not the other way around. To which Lionel always responded that it was all her, and that he worked full time elsewhere. He did of course support her unwaveringly before he officially joined the team in 2012 as the business’ third employee and spent countless annual leave days at trade shows, conferences and on sales trips.
It should go without saying that our clients and their families are the driver of everything we do, that we will go above and beyond. So instead of telling you this, I will tell you something we live by daily. A saying that is hanging on the wall of our office. “How do we do it better” not better than others but better than ourselves. Over the last 20 years, Jennie has grown the range and the business, teaching us all the art of humbly assessing the business to continually adapt to the needs of the industry and not just do what we want to.
Supporting Jennie and Lionel in the business is myself Chantelle and my sister Hayley. We are backed by an incredible team which currently is Joanne, Carmel, Nikki, Renee, Tegan, Caitlin, Adam, Sandra, Melissa, Chris, Jordan and Sarah.
While this year is all about celebrating the major milestone that is 20 years as FTA and all that has been achieved, it is so worth celebrating the succession of the business. In July this year, Jennie and Lionel, while still owning the business will retire and I (Chantelle) will be stepping into the very large shoes that is Jennie’s role as CEO.
As a child of a family business, I am abundantly aware of its challenges, its privileges and the occupational hazard that is talking business at the dinner table. However, the major privilege that stands out for me is the opportunity to get
to know my parents in a whole new way, not just as parents but as friends, colleagues and mentors.
At the risk of ‘big noting’ them, I am extremely proud of the challenges they have overcome, the strength of both their and our relationships, their tenacity, their drive to take risks, their ability to view challenges as just that, the relationships they have formed, their unwavering moral standards and so much more.
Thank you all for being a part of FTA, you have helped us to grow.

FU SHOU YUAN IS SHORTLISTED FOR THE “2024 WORLD’S TOP 500 INNOVATIVE BRANDS”
From January 20 to 24, the Annual Meeting 2025 of the World Economic Forum, themed by “Collaboration for the Intelligent Age”, took place in Davos, Switzerland, bringing together nearly 3,000 representatives from various fields around the world.
As a part of the World Economic Forum, the 2025 Davos World Brand Summit is a summit where outstanding brands from various countries were gathered and the lists of “2024 World’s Top 500 Brands” and “2024 World’s Top 500 Innovative Brands” were released.
Fu Shou Yuan International Group, along with brands such as Apple, Microsoft, Tesla, State Grid, and Huawei, was shortlisted for the “2024 World’s Top 500 Innovative Brands”. The brand value of Fu Shou Yuan International Group was evaluated at USD 2.916 billion (approximately RMB 21.2 billion), with a brand index as high as 492.45 points, ranking 380th. Invited by the annual meeting, Wu Yibo, Chief Brand Officer of Fu Shou Yuan International Group, went to Davos to receive the award and deliver a keynote speech for and on behalf of the Group. At the same time, he participated in the exchange event “Shanghai Night” hosted by Shanghai Municipal People’s Government, introducing the brand image of Shanghai to the world.
The 2025 Davos World Brand Summit was jointly organized by the professional brand evaluation agency Asiabrand, MINAX as the leader, and numerous authoritative institutions such as Eurasia Brand Evaluation Center and TYIST. From the attendance of former US
President Barack Obama at the first Shanghai Summit in 2017 to the 2025 summit held in Davos which attracts the world’s attention, the Summit has witnessed the development of global brands and promoted the formation of regional brand clusters. The theme of this year’s summit is “Initiating the Era of Brand Securitization”. This brand-new concept represents the quantification of brand value and the securitization of brand assets. It is an inevitable trend in brand development and also a challenge jointly faced by global brand leaders.
Wu Yibo, Chief Brand Officer of Fu Shou Yuan International Group, delivered a keynote speech at the Summit. He said that “reflection on lives to make life even more brilliant, and constantly gathering the spiritual strength to promote the civilization and progress in human society” is the consistent brand connotation and cultural proposition of Fu Shou Yuan. “The world united for life.” Chinese enterprises are willing to contribute more Chinese wisdom and strength to the high-quality development of the global life service industry.
Wu Yibo introduced that the innovative practices of Fu Shou Yuan are first reflected in the reinterpretation of death culture. Fu Shou Yuan built China’s first humanism memorial park in Shanghai, which has led to the popular trend of “changing cemeteries into parks” and the social popularization of life education. Secondly, it actively explores the eco-friendly death care mode, creating a green space shared by the living and the deceased, and more importantly, establishing a spiritual world of meaning for the living. What’s more, Fu Shou Yuan actively embraces the development and application of modern technology. It held China’s first cross-time-space funeral in the digital universe, built a digital cemetery with integrated digital services, and released an exclusive digital human model, aiming to “make mark beautiful, memorial long and record thick” in a brand-new way of life science and technology.
Since its establishment in 2005, Asiabrand has successively released many authoritative lists, such as the World’s Top 500 Brands, Asia’s Top 500 Brands, and China’s Top 500 Brands. For
the development of this list, the “qualitative + quantitative” model, Asiabrand’s brand value assessment 3.0, was adopted. Through the accurate measurement of corporate brand assets and the relevant analysis of the efficacy of brand assets, the calculated brand value results are more in line with market value, providing a scientific and objective reference basis for management, investment and financing of the government and resource allocation and brand management of enterprises. Based on the Asset Appraisal Law of the People’s Republic of China and the national standard Brand value assessment - Part 6: Intangible Elements (GB/T 29186.62021), and according to Asiabrand brand assessment method, the brand value of Fu Shou Yuan International Group was evaluated at USD 2.916 billion.
This is the third consecutive year that Fu Shou Yuan has participated in the brand value assessment. Its brand value increased by 51.48% on a year-on-year basis and it was honored as one of the World’s Top 500 Innovative Brands. This is a full affirmation of the brand innovation and development of Fu Shou Yuan International Group as well as its future potential. Fu Shou Yuan will continue to explore in fields such as the Internet, the metaverse, and digital life, carry out broader exchanges and cooperation with international counterparts, constantly explore new areas and directions in the life service industry, and contribute to building a more inclusive, diverse, and innovative world.
The 2025 Davos World Brand Summit is held in Davos, Switzerland.

HELPING TO CREATE A SACRED SPACE: NORWALK PRECAST BURIAL SYSTEMS COLUMBARIUM
Last year, thanks to CCAV sharing our details, one of Melbourne’s Buddhist monasteries approached Norwalk Precast Burial Systems to help transform an underutilized area into a beautiful columbarium wall—a sacred space for peace and reflection.
A site visit was conducted, and a short and simple brief was given: “We have this space we would like to use for ashes interment for our community. We want the large rock to remain in the centre, and the wall to be built around it. Ideally, we would like you to design, supply, and install the wall, including your columbarium modules and the granite finish. Eventually, a roof will be placed over the top of the area.”
Designing with Tradition and Innovation
Jane Minter, following in the footsteps of her retired father, John Taylor, took on the challenge of designing a columbarium wall using Norwalks pre-cast Columbarium modules. She meticulously researched granite and its fixing options while also strategising how to access this tricky-to-reach site on the side of a mountain. To bring the concept to life, Jane engaged the services of Norwalk’s architect, Vinarc Design, for an artist’s impression of the design.
The monastery was highly pleased with the proposed design, and the quoting process began. The monastery requested that each shutter feature a gilded symbol on light
grey granite as well as a large, gilded motif on the centre granite slab. To support the shutters, strips of anodised aluminium were incorporated into the design, with each shutter secured using just two rosettes and tamperproof screws. The logistics of delivering the large granite pieces were carefully considered, researched, and quoted accordingly.
From Concept to Completion
Once the project was quoted and accepted, production commenced. A total of 28 five-space columbarium modules were manufactured at our yard in Seymour, Victoria. All fittings and fixtures were ordered, along with granite slabs and shutters featuring gold gilding.
Over three days in January, the project was successfully installed using a spider crane to navigate the extremely tight location. Since the columbarium wall site was inaccessible to vehicles, the spider crane was used to unload the precast modules and granite, while trolleys maneuvered the materials along a covered walkway to the rear of the building.
The final step in bringing the project to completion was carefully installing the gilded shutters, creating a dignified and sacred space for reflection.
A Lasting Tribute
We are incredibly proud of the completed project and grateful for the positive feedback from our client:
“We are happy and proud of the work that you guys have done. Thanks very much for the great working relationship all the way through the project.”
At Norwalk, we take great pride in creating meaningful and lasting memorials. This project stands as a testament to our commitment to craftsmanship, innovation, and honoring the wishes of the communities we serve.

AGED CARE AND PEAK DEATH
In just a few years we’re going to see a huge population shift that will impact everything from health and aged care to funeral services and body disposition.
The sandwich generation
There’s increasing talk about the evolving sandwich generation; adult children caring for aging parents while trying to juggle careers and their own families.
The health system and aged care sector are feeling the pressure. We’ve all heard about hospital bed shortages. Add to that aged care place shortages, the lack of respite beds, ambulance ramping, doctor shortages, six-tonine-month waitlists for Federal Government Aged Care Packages, and a shortage of workers to facilitate the services offered under those packages.
Many families have little choice but to care for their own. I’m one of the millions of unpaid carers.
A crisis in plain sight
The numbers are staggering. The population is getting older and we’re living longer. (Australians have added 15 years to life expectancy over the last 70 years. Source UN World Pop Prospects 2022).
In the next 10 years, those born during the mid-20th century baby boom, will officially be ‘old’. That is, the baby boomers will reach their 80s and it’s then that their health and care needs will increase. And with that, their death care needs will increase too.
Using the ABS Population Projections, demographer Bernard Salt predicts Australia’s 85+ population growth rate will increase threefold over the next eight years.
Melissa Reader is the Founder and CEO of Violet, an online care platform designed to provide guidance on discussing and planning for the last 12-18 months of life.
Speaking on ABC Sydney, Melissa said that these days “about 12,000 people reach the age of 85 each year, but in the next five years that’s going to grow to 60,000 people every year”.
She’s labelled this huge population shift “a crisis happening in plain sight”.
“Most people want to age in their own home for as long as possible. Most of us even want to die at home with the right support and services.
“If those wishes are going to be fulfilled, it’s going to fall back on the adult children… and all too often they don’t have a plan in place, so people are making rushed decisions in hospital corridors,” she said.
“We want these people to have these conversations at the kitchen table.”
July 1
The Federal Government knows the Australian population is approaching ‘peak death’, a term used by Ray Martin’s wonderful TV series ‘The last Goodbye’. These dire predictions are nothing new. They’ve been lobbied by the aged care and palliative care sectors for years.
As part of Government’s Aged Care reforms, from July 1, there will be funding to die at home –– up to $25,000 in additional support to allow people to spend their final three months of palliative care at home.
Aged Care Minister Anikia Wells says the new $25,000 ‘End-of-life Pathway’ is designed to be fast-tracked and would be on top of other support the person is already getting.
And then…
With life expectancy for women now 85 and 81 for men (ABS), and the boomers soon to be entering their 80s in massive numbers, the death care sector is about to get very busy.

AFDA REPORT
AUSTRALIAN FUNERAL DIRECTORS ASSOCIATION
This report marks my final report as the AFDA National President. Serving as the National President of AFDA has been an incredible experience – one filled with inspiration, challenges, and growth. As my term comes to an end, I want to take this opportunity to reflect on the past two years and express my gratitude to the AFDA community and industry colleagues.
Throughout my time as President, I have had the privilege of meeting many AFDA members and industry colleagues across the country, witnessing firsthand the passion and dedication that define this profession. Funeral care is more than just a profession –it is a calling, built on the desire to serve our communities with empathy and excellence. Strengthening our connections within AFDA and the wider community has been a key focus of my tenure, and I’ve been reminded time and again that this is what drives so many of you as well. I have also enjoyed attending ACCA events and getting to know your passionate and professional members, recognising how closely aligned we are in our dedication to serving families. Thank you to President Lauren Hardgrove and CEO Ben Kelly for their commitment to our shared industry. We are extremely lucky to have such wonderful people leading by example.
Among the highlights of my term was sharing our members’ stories with the broader community. Speaking with various groups and media about the value of choosing an AFDA member was an opportunity to showcase the transparency, training, and ethics that set us apart. One particularly special project was our collaboration with Paediatric Palliative Care, which helped families better understand the role of funeral directors in their time of need. Educating families about their options empowers them to make informed choices.
Like any organisation, AFDA faces challenges, and one of the biggest challenges has been ensuring we engage all members in a way that is accessible and valuable. The demands of funeral service leave little time for additional commitments, but we recognise the need for ongoing training and support. The launch of the AFDA Funeral Learning Hub (FLH) was a direct response to this need. This project has been one of the most ambitious projects in AFDA history and I am proud to have played a part in bringing this project to fruition. This platform delivers accessible, high-quality training tailored to our profession, ensuring that even the busiest funeral homes can support their teams’ growth. The FLH is already making an impact and has reached a new milestone with our 1,000th user signed up and learning, and I am confident it will continue to grow.
My last official duties as AFDA National President will be at the upcoming AFDA National Convention in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam from Monday 24 – Thursday 27 March 2025. We have an exciting program for the convention including international speakers John Adams, Past President of the National Association of Funeral Directors UK, local Vietnam businessman Simon Pugh, and keynote speaker Cat Thao Nguyen, along with HR specialist Colin Wilson from Key Business Advisors, technology expert Marc Foi from FireHawk Funerals and Greg Shorland from the Funeral Learning Hub plus an exceptional social program featuring must-see destinations in Ho Chi Minh City. If ACCA members are unable to join us in Vietnam, we invite you to attend our 90-year anniversary celebration in Melbourne on 29-31 August 2025 at the Sofitel Melbourne on Collins which also promises to be a memorable event.
Serving as the AFDA National President has been an honour. I am deeply grateful to everyone who has supported me in this role. Thank you to the AFDA national office team for their unwavering commitment to our members and to our Divisional and National Councillors, particularly National Executive members Asha Dooley, Deanne McLeod, and James MacLeod. Your dedication to the AFDA is extraordinary, and I am truly humbled to have worked alongside you. It has been a privilege to serve, and I remain committed to supporting AFDA members and the wider community as we continue to evolve, rise to new challenges, and strengthen our industry.
Regards
Kelly Scott National President
NZCCC UPDATE
NGĀ RAU HOTU
Greetings to our Australasian colleagues.
I have recently stepped in as Acting Chair for NZCCC and we are gearing up for our conference in May. It would be great to see some of you there if you are able to make the trip!
I also attended the FDANZ conference in Nelson early in February, it was great to network with them as an opportunity to share industry knowledge and expertise, especially as it relates to the Crematorium side of what we do.
We have been working in the background on a new website for NZCCC, that will be launching soon.
Ngā Rau Hotu
In 2024, we were gifted a reo name Ngā Rau Hotu, after working with Kuruho Wereta of Recreation Aotearoa.
The name ‘Ngā Rau Hotu’ is rooted in Māori culture and philosophy. It encapsulates the essence of life, death, and the cyclical nature of existence.
Its literal translation can be found below:
Ngā Rau: This phrase refers to ‘many leaves’, hundreds, many people, symbolising abundance, growth and renewal. Here, it alludes to those who have passed and are remembered.
Hotu: This word conveys a profound sense of sadness, grief and loss. It speaks to the emotional depth of the human experience, and the importance of acknowledging and honouring those who have departed.
By combining these elements, Ngā Rau Hotu becomes an expression of the complex emotions associated with death and mourning.
Going forward, Ngā Rau Hotu will sit alongside the acronym of New Zealand Cemeteries and Crematoria on our logo, documentation and website, as: NZCCC Ngā Rau Hotu
We are hoping to join you at your conference later this year, it will be great to continue to collaborate with you all for the important mahi you do for the communities you serve in Australia and abroad.

STATE REPORT
CEMETERIES & CREMATORIA ASSOCIATION OF WESTERN AUSTRALIA
The Old Busselton Cemetery or Pioneer Cemetery, located between Marine Terrace and Adelaide Street, was established in 1847 and formally gazetted in 1856. Many of the districts prominent families are buried there. The first recorded burial was Mr Patrick Hurley in 1858 and there are over 250 recorded burials - although 550 individuals have records associated with the cemetery. Burials ceased at the cemetery in the 1930’s.
Since 2009, significant progress has been made to conserve the cemetery in collaboration with the community. The grave sites have been cleared, overgrown vegetation removed and interpretive signage on the cemetery’s history installed. Some sites have additional information about individuals who are buried there. A map was also created to make it easier for visitors to identify where the gravesites are situated
As a large number of the graves have no memorials the City has, during the last 12 months, been gathering names and information about the people who were buried in the Old Busselton Cemetery. Working with a group of volunteers, community groups,
and a public comment consultation process, the number of people who have most likely been buried in the cemetery has grown. Initial records lists approximately 250 burials (as listed in the State Heritage Register of Heritage Places Assessment Documentation), during the information gathering process this number has grown to over 1,000.
The next stage of the plan, to be completed in 2025, will be to install new name tablets, replacing the existing ones at the entrance to the cemetery to include the additional names and correcting dates and spelling on the old tablets.
ACCA CEO VISITS WA
In early December 2024, Ben Kelly, ACCA CEO paid a visit to our fabulous state of WA , visiting a number of cemetery authorities.
Ben visited the Bunbury Cemetery Board before embarking on a road trip with new ACCA Board member, Kristy Constantine to visit the City of Busselton and have a catch up with CCAWA President Christine McGrath.
Christine ensured the weather was fine before taking them both on a tour of the city, showcasing some of the highlights the town has to offer, before visiting the Busselton Cemetery. Christine was able to show them through the lawn and general cemeteries, the new arcade of trees and memorial options the city has on offer for bereaved families looking to memorialise their loved ones.
From all accounts, Ben was impressed with the tour and plans to return with his family to explore the region further.
