The New Year is approaching fast. We cannot feel it yet because it’s still pretty warm for this time of year, but that has not stopped us from putting together a holiday edition for you filled with unique ideas and stories on how to spend the holiday season. Consider this a helpful holiday handbook where you’ll find unique gift-giving inspirations from local entertainment venues and theaters, restaurants, and all the great attractions our city offers during the winter season. And since there is always the question of what to buy your loved ones for the holidays, a great gift-giving option is the luxurious custommade Jewelry by designer Maria Ress. Maria’s work was recently showcased in an exclusive trunk show at Neiman Marcus on Michigan Avenue.

From the beginning, it has been our agenda here at Rmag to publish stories on young Russian-speaking entrepreneurs, celebrities, and professionals; in other words, successful and unique people. In this issue, we have two very different motivating stories and discussions.

First, we go into the business and marketing world with an interview with Vlad Moldavskiy, marketing mogul and Chief growth Officer at Mabbly, and Liz Margulis, Chicago-based hair design diva, who discusses with us her Russian roots and expertise in the beauty industry.

Our very own Sergey Elkin speaks to Alejandro Cerrudo, resident choreographer and dancer at Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, with a special inside interview. And finally, get ready to meet our cover story star, Профессор Лебединский, a very famous entertainment figure in Russia. Learn about Профессор and his unique story on moving to the United States and living the life in Miami now, doing what he loves most, photography.

& COMPASSION On October 29th Chicagoans immersed themselves in culinary delight and artistic flair during the 2015 Compassion, Fashion and Cocktails – a charity event celebrating fashion and philanthropy supporting the Israel Idonije Foundation, an organization that helps and motivates underprivileged children. More than 700 affluent professionals, entrepreneurs, professional sports and entertainment personas came together for the charity event celebrating fashion and philanthropy that raised money and awareness for the Israel Idonije Foundation (israelidonije.org).

The event was held at The godfrey Hotel Chicago | I|O. Not only did guests mingle with the who’s who of Chicago, they also enjoyed amazing food, cocktails and an exclusive

fashion show. godfrey Hotel Chicago hosted a private cocktail reception, followed by the runway fashion show, by international Paris designer, Zadig & Voltaire. Hors d’oeuvres and dessert were donated by 13 local Chicago restaurants, bakeries, and catering companies (25 Degrees, Balena | Boka group, Blue Plate, Freshii, Frontier | Pioneer Tavern group, Ixcateco grill, Loews Hotel Chicago, Real Urban BBQ, Seasons 52, Sugar Bliss Cake Boutique, Sullivan's Steak House, Untitled, and Zoom Pizza Factory). A wine tasting was hosted by advanced sommelier Jim Bube from Heritage Wine Cellars, and there was a raffle giveaway of items ranging from paintings to gift cards. CHARITY FASHION SHOW The Luxe Be a Lady Charity Fashion Show was held on November 7 at Park West and featured many amazing Chicago Sports beauties strutting on the runway showcasing the best of Bloomingdales’ Fall/ Holiday 2015 Collection. A legendary partnering of Chicago Sports teams coupled with high fashion, women’s empowerment and philanthropy made this event the hottest ticket of the season!

Ticket sales benefited the two charities involved; one founded by Chicago Bears’ very own, Jermon Bushrod, and his wife, Jessica, to help at risk youth afford an education and the other by Chicago Blackhawk, Bryan Bickell, and his wife, Amanda, to help abused and abandoned “pit bull” type dogs and children.

The Luxe Be a Lady Charity Fashion Show drew over 400 attendees and included a high-end silent auction, and to the sheer delight of the audience, Chicago Blackhawks and Bears players were also in attendance.

– В этой компании я впервые попробовал свои силы в качестве хореографа. Мне повезло, что у меня есть своя труппа, что я могу ставить спектакли, учиться, экспериментировать. Мне нравится, что компания приглашает к сотрудничеству крупнейших хореографов мира: Иржи Киллиана, Матса Эка, охада Нахарина.

– А что вам в ней не нравится?

Керрудо задумался, а потом, засмеявшись, сказал: – Бюджет... Если серьезно, у нас есть много спонсоров, но если бы их было еще больше, мы бы смогли себе позволить еще большие проекты. КеРРУдо ГоВоРИТ: “Первый толчок

к балету сделала моя старшая сестра. она стала учиться танцам, и через три

года я тоже захотел попробовать. Потом пришла очередь моего брата, а потом и родители присоединились. Это не они меня – это мы с сестрой привели их к танцу. Но я единственный, для кого танец превратился в профессию”. Здесь хорошо было бы написать, что в детстве Керрудо побывал в театре и на него неизгладимое впечатление оказала такая-то труппа. он сказал себе, что когда-нибудь тоже станет профессионалом, и это послужило толчком к выбору профессии... Увы, ничего подобного в жизни Керрудо не было. он стал учиться танцам просто потому, что надо было чему-то учиться. Балет не привлекал юношу. Красоту искусства танца он понял гораздо позднее: “Вначале мне не нравился балет. Я танцевал без особых эмоций. И даже когда я начал карьеру танцовщика, я не знал всего, что связано с этой профессией”. С девяти лет Керрудо учился в Консерватории танца в Мадриде (Real Conservatorio Professional de Danza de

– В Испании прекрасная школа танца. Сколько великих танцоров ее закончили! они танцуют везде: в АБТ, в Королевском балете Ковент-гардена, в балетной труппе Парижской оперы, в балете Сан-Франциско. Главным моим направлением был классический танец, однако много внимания мы уделяли характерному танцу, современному танцу. Я впервые вышел на сцену, еще учась в консерватории. очень волновался.

– А сейчас волнуетесь перед спектаклем?

– В качестве танцовщика чувствую не волнение, а, скорее, возбуждение. А как хореограф я волнуюсь не за себя, а за моих артистов. Со временем пришел опыт, и я научился управлять своими эмоциями. Для меня было и остается полным кайфом входить в образ,

двигаться на сцене, чувствовать дыхание зрительного зала.

– В двадцать пять лет вы переезжаете в Чикаго. Почему? Ведь Чикаго не относится к балетным и танцевальным столицам мира. Не Лондон, не Москва...

– Я не выбирал Чикаго – я приехал работать с конкретной труппой Hubbard Street Dance. У нее сложились особые отношения с Нидерландским театром танца. Директора компаний хорошо знали друг друга и артистов. Мой приезд не был случайностью. Я не приезжал на экзамен – я приехал и сразу стал танцевать. Поэтому переезд прошел спокойно, естественно, без потрясений.

– Скучаете по Испании?

– Нет. Я не живу в Испании с восемнадцати лет. Я скучаю по моей семье и хотел бы, чтобы она была рядом. Я навещаю их на Рождество и летом, но живу в Чикаго.

– А как же другой язык, стиль жизни, менталитет?

– Моей первой страной, когда я уехал из Испании, была Германия – абсолютно другая страна по сравнению с Испанией. Я впервые жил отдельно от родителей и в те три года больше всего скучал по Испании, по дому. Потом я жил в Голландии, сейчас – в Чикаго. больше живешь в других странах, тем больше привыкаешь к ним... Я люблю Чикаго, даже его отвратительные зимы. У этого города есть характер. Вам нравится то или иное место, если вам нравятся люди, живущие там. В Чикаго живут мои друзья. Иногда заполнение официальных документов напоминает мне, что я – пришелец, но друзья и коллеги заставляют забыть об этом.

– Поговорим о терминологии. Почему в названии Hubbard Street есть слово “танец”?

– Это очень просто. Потому что мы не ставим балеты. Балет – это танец, но не каждый танец – балет. Если вы спрашиваете меня о моих спектаклях, то их можно назвать современным танцем, но никак не классическим балетом. Мы не ставим классические балеты, но каждое утро начинается у нас с разминки у станка.

– Как вы работаете с танцорами? Показываете им движения или даете возможность импровизировать?

– По-разному, но я предпочитаю совместное творчество. Я не диктатор. Чем больше предложений выскажут мне танцоры, тем лучше. Я не прихожу на репетицию с готовыми решениями. Движения создаются непосредственно

в процессе работы. Я люблю видеть перед собой воплощение моих мыслей. Застывшим конструкциям и фантазиям я предпочитаю живую импровизацию.

– Вы обсуждаете с танцорами характеры героев?

– Мы используем не слова, а язык танца. Мои спектакли абстрактны, бессюжетны. Я говорю о персонаже, но мне бы не хотелось наставлять танцовщика, что он должен чувствовать. Моя задача – указать ему путь... Слова могут меняться, словами нельзя выразить танец. Я не хочу никого раздражать, боюсь быть неверно понятым. Язык танца понятнее слов.

– Как рождаются у вас новые спектакли? Вам нужен какой-то внешний толчок?

– По-разному. Если это чистый лист бумаги, то я начинаю с музыки. Мне нужно зацепиться за что-то. Вдохновение – вот что необходимо для работы. Иначе получится механический спектакль без сердца, без эмоций.

– Не могли ли бы вы рассказать нам о ваших предстоящих спектаклях?

– Я понятия не имею, какими они будут. Какие-то мысли есть в голове, но говорить о них слишком рано. Люблю удивлять.

Песня “Я убью тебя, лодочник”, лучше любых слов представляет Алексея лебединского, известного так же под псевдонимом Профессор лебединский. отсюда и первый вопрос: А почему “Профессор”?

Двадцать пять лет назад, когда люди по три часа ждали вызванного такси, я всегда представлялся “профессор”, и такси присылали немедленно. Такая удивительная ситуация была у нас в Петербурге. Ты взял этот псевдоним, когда решил заняться сценической карьерой?

Нет, я просто думал, что никогда не выйду с этими песнями на сцену, а под этим псевдонимом будет выпущен материал, который я пою рычащим голосом. Уже потом друзья заставили меня выйти на сцену. Когда-нибудь пожалел о решении выйти на сцену?

Я никогда ни о каких принятых решениях не жалел, потому что никому ничего плохого в жизни не сделал. Но это было странным и неожиданным как для меня, так и для всех моих близких. Это было для всех маленьким шоком, потому что я всегда занимался другой музыкой. Единственное, о чем я жалею в своей жизни, то, что не стал врачом. Все, чем я занимался на сцене, можно было делать в качестве второй профессии. Многие говорят, что я нашел свое призвание. Но важно, что человек чувствует сам, а не то, что говорят. Не всех людей, поющих на русском, помнят десятилетиями. А тебя помнят и любят.

Не все любят, но помнят точно. Ктото не задумывается над смыслом моих песен, а он в них есть, за исключением совершенно идиотских, записанных на спор. Например, “Маша дурочка” и “Малосольный огурец”, которые мы записали с композитором Игорем Рогалевым во времена моей работы аранжировщиком в студии Союза композиторов. Все остальное написано с подтекстом. Когда люди читают меня в Фейсбуке, они с удивлением обнаруживают, что я автор этих песен, начинают заново их прослушивать и вникать в их смысл. Смотрят мои фотографии и удивляются, что мой образ не соответствует образу, сложившемуся благодаря средствам массовой информации. Все неоднозначно в этой жизни, но в этом-то и интерес. Каждый день у себя на страничке ты высказываешь критические мысли

по поводу того, что происходит в России. Ты живешь здесь. Тебе пришлось уехать оттуда из-за своей гражданской позиции?

Тяжело жить было всегда, в последнее время стало просто невозможно. Я долго приходил к этому решению. Я пытался заставить себя смириться с хаосом и беззаконием, с жутью, которая творится в России. Я уехал во время наступления самой страшной части правления Путина, когда началось катастрофическое зомбирование, убийство сознания русского народа. Пренебрежение ко всему хорошему и святому в душе и сердце моего народа, к его истории. В социальном смысле происходит катастрофа. Медицина, образование, промышленность – разрушено все, что только можно было разрушить. Все деньги, которые можно было украсть, украдены. Я не мог больше переносить эту систему, у меня начались физические реакции организма: стало подниматься давление после общения с людьми, которые не понимали, что такое честь, добро и зло. Это не высокопарные фразы. В каждом из нас есть лимит терпения, границы добра и зла, перейдя которые начинаешь принимать совершенно невообразимые решения. Если бы еще десять лет назад мне сказали, что я уеду из России, я бы покрутил пальцем у виска. знаю, что это отразилось не только на твоем физическом состоянии, но и на материальном. Многие перестали приглашать тебя на концерты, мероприятия.

Моей основной работой были корпоративы. Моими основными заказчиками были люди, у которых есть деньги, которые передавали меня, так сказать, из рук в руки. Меня практически было не видно в телевизоре, я достаточно редко звучал по радио, за исключением, может быть, Радио “Шансон” и “Дорожного Радио”. Но эти люди, единожды увидев мое выступление, приглашали меня снова.

Но наступил момент, когда люди бизнеса и чиновники стали мне говорить: “Леш, прекращай высказывать свое мнение. Иначе мы не сможем тебя приглашать”. Я считаю, что заплатил большую цену, но это стоит того. Достаточно большие деньги, которые я зарабатывал, это ничто по сравнению со свободой. Каждому человеку надо, всего лишь, почувствовать грань, когда он понимает, что ему важнее. И сейчас, даже если бы у меня не было совсем денег, я чувствую здесь себя несравненно лучше и психологически, и физически. Я ощущаю удивительное чувство свободы, защищенности, хотя у меня нет даже вида на жительство. Здесь нет дикой агрессии, неприязни, зависти, которые в России на каждом шагу. Впервые за многие годы я чувствую себя помолодевшим, человеком с перспективами.

На вторую записанную песню будет сделан мультфильм гениальным художником Виктором Богорадом. Это песня “Ватники” по мотивам песни Майка Науменко “Гопники”. Это попытка пробудить сознание в россиянах, которые еще способны анализировать и думать. Третья песня направлена конкретно и адресно против существующей власти в России, она будет называться “С кем Вы, Господин Президент?”. Хочу хоть кого-то спасти. Для многих из нас иммиграция – единственное спасение, хотя мы очень любим свою страну. К сожалению, многие в Америке смотрят совдеповские каналы, СоловьеваКиселева, которые городят чушь и кричат “Путин – ура!”. Всем им хочется сказать: “собирайте вещи и валите в Россию”. Все эти люди не в курсе, как обманывают российский народ. Война на Украине – только начало. Эта война зрела долго, думаю, что она разрастется в еще более страшную мировую войну. Сопоставляя экономические, исторические факты, понимаю, что без войны эта ситуация не разрешится. Веришь ли ты, что небезразличные люди, собравшись вместе, смогут что-то изменить в России?

Я в этом уверен. Но система собственной безопасности в России налажена очень хорошо. Януковича смогли скинуть достаточно легко, в России так не получится. Даже если несколько тысяч человек попробуют проникнуть в Кремль, их просто расстреляют. Несогласные люди не хотят в тюрьму или быть убитыми, как многие оппозиционные деятели в России – Немцов убит, Мурза лежит и непонятно, что с ним будет дальше. Изнутри России это произойдет, если Путин перейдет дорогу своим соратникам по разграблению страны и произойдет дворцовый переворот. Но придет ли ктото лучше Путина? Должно случиться что-то серьезное извне, чтобы те, кто сейчас при власти, понесли наказание, чтобы другие негодяи поняли, что наступило другое время, когда нужно вести себя почеловечески. The Soviet Union. Kharkiv, Ukraine. I lived there until I was 3½ and then my family was trying to decide where to move. US felt like the best option and we were fortunate enough to win a green card. We moved to Detroit and my dad was delivering pizzas for Dominos. Eventually, we moved to Rogers Park and dad worked as a taxi driver while my mom was at Allstate. Finally, my dad found opportunity in the Real Estate world and took charge, leading him to run a multi-million dollar real estate business.

My day-to-day priority is to build strong relationships with our customers, develop new partnerships, and find new sales pipelines.

Do you feel as if other Russians living in America help each other out with connections and networking?

There’s always going to be an instant connection and it’s good to help your people out. I’m a strong believer in always building relationships with people who have the same roots as me.

What was your first introduction to the world of business?

I started buying festival tickets and selling them and began producing events at clubs and bars. I grew my network because of that, and I started meeting very important people through those connections.

Where did you go to school? What did you study?

DePaul University. Accounting/Finance What previous jobs did you have?

I worked in accounting for Sidley Austin, a large corporate law firm. I also had a chance to work for Hyatt Hotels as a financial analyst in the corporate office up until 30 months ago when I became the first employee at Mabbly. how did that bring you to where you are today? how did you realize that digital marketing was something you were passionate about?

I had too much energy to sit in a cubicle, and I realized that networking and communicating was a skill that I had. I always had an eye for media, so this was something that allowed me to thrive.

Our people are strong. There have been very little situations where I saw a Russian speaker not in hustle mode in some form or another.

What can you say to young and ambitious people that are looking to do something as great as you?

get ready to fall on your face, make people angry, and mess up.

Make sure you’re learning from your mistakes, this is what’s going to make you stronger.

Most importantly, be agile. Be ready to make adjustments and to be a critical thinker. get work done.

Mentors are important. Mentors for everything, for financial, for business development. The more mentors you can have, the more you can build your network.

I’d buy a bottle of red, open it and head down to the Piazza to drink it out of plastic cups.

Where are you from?

What’s your goal as a stylist?

Chicago. We’re from Kiev originally, but have lived in Chicago for the last 30 years. My mom owns a medical supply company and my dad owns a jewelry store in Chicago.

With styling, regardless of whether you realize it, you are making a statement. I want to make positive statements, whether they’re out of the box, or inside of it.

What was your first introduction to styling?

How does being Russian impact your goals/dreams? Does it?

My mom’s love for fashion. While she got into the medical field to support me, she always surrounded me with her love for fashion, and often found me dressed up in her clothes as a kid. Her and Helen Berkun, another Russian stylist and photographer, let me assist her for about four years. She showed me the ropes behind the industry, the importance of public relations, communication, how to deal with companies, how to be professional. I wouldn’t be where I am right now without her and my mom

I’m inspired by my family’s determination to make something of themselves here in America. I’m inspired to make it bigger than what they made for themselves, bigger for my own future family and for myself.

Do you feel like having a Russian background molds your style into something more unique and authentic?

My background, heritage, and how I was raised gives me an edge that other stylists don’t have. My style has my roots embedded into it.

What kind of people do you want to work with? Who are you inspired by?

Well, most work is based on referrals. But, I am going to be the mix of Rachel Zoe and BlondeSalad (Chiara Ferragni). I love that Rachel Zoe created an empire. I want to have style clients like Rihanna and W Magazine.

What are your goals with Big Hair Big City?

To make Chicago be known for more than just food. Since it’s not overflowing with stylists and photographers and artists, we have more opportunities to make ourselves bigger. But, Big Hair Big City doesn’t mean just Chicago, it means every city.

What’s your ideal future like?

I’m going to be the brand ambassador for various brands. I want to have a say in what’s going on in the fashion world.

What can you say to aspiring fashion bloggers, stylists, models, and designers?

Don’t give up. You have to be open to all the different experiences that are going to come your way. You have to be hungry, but not thirsty. Find random models, style yourself, find beginners, do it without a reward at first. The reward, in the beginning, is completing the shoot in general and for yourself.

f Chicago isn't the steakhouse capitol of the world, it should be.

I tried to find out just how many we have in our city but couldn't confirm the number. And guess what? There's a new one in town.

Fairly new as it opened in May and is already creating a lot of chatter.

It's called Prime & Provisions, and while steak is its claim to fame, you are not going to believe what keeps me going back: the fried chicken. But I'll get to that in a moment.

Prime & Provisions made the bold move of opening right across the river from one of the cities' premiere steak houses, Chicago Cut. If you're going to take that risk, you better be good and‌ it they are. Like Chicago Cut, Prime & Provisions is pricey but worth a special night out. The decor is elegant. They have one booth that is my favorite as you go from the bar to the dining room. You'll know it when you see it.

ONTO THE FOOD I've been here twice and here's what I've tried so far. The tuna tartare was delicious and the chopped salad was good.

My favorite, of all things located under appetizers, was some of the finest fried chicken I have ever eaten. It may even be the best I've ever had. (This now has me searching for the best fried chicken restaurant in Chicago.)

The chicken was super crispy on the outside, yet the inside was not only moist, it was also flavorful; a combination that’s hard to find. When I bite into my fried chicken I like to hear that crunch. This was so satisfyingly crunchy I asked if I could speak to the chef to find out how he makes it. I thought maybe he dipped it in batter more than once. But no, he says the secret is the combination of flour to corn starch mixture. It's almost like a tempura. Of course, the buttermilk brine is what makes the inside so moist. I could do a whole review on this but I should move on. Let's suffice it to say the second time I went back, I skipped the steak and went straight for the fried chicken.

As far as the steaks go, I had the bonein rib eye. It's was juicy and delicious, but a word of caution. The steak arrives on a super hot plate and while it sits on the plate, it continues to cook. So if you like your steaks rare or medium, ask for an extra plate so it will stop cooking.

We were encouraged to try the mashed potatoes and they were good.

The desserts are insanely delicious.

The waitress brought us a peanut butter chocolate pie. I was worried it was going to be too rich, but instead it was just too good. I couldn't stop eating it.

The star of the desserts has to be the tableside s'mores. I never would have ordered this since I'm not a huge fan of this bonfire dessert‌ but this was different. It was so much better. It comes in a chocolate sphere that lies on top of a decorative strip of graham crackers and marshmallow sauce. The waitress then poured a hot chocolate sauce over it. We watched in childlike amazement as the sauce melted the sphere, resulting in campfire-like smoke, only to find the sphere was filled with yet more chocolate, ice cream and marshmallows. It was not only fun to watch but incredibly delicious.

Worth every calorie.

I loved this place and will definitely go back. I know what I'll order: fried chicken and tableside s'mores for sure. Maybe I'll order the chopped salad too so I can feel as if I'm eating healthy. YUM! I'm now searching to see if I can find better fried chicken at any other Chicagoland restaurant.

We would drink it sweet, because it was after supper, and add milk to it and bite on small little sandwiches while we drank. I don’t remember ever drinking coffee at home. Coffee didn’t exist in our family. It was tea, tea, tea.”

In the 1800’s, when farming tea became widespread and the common person had access to tea, many people would come home after a long day of work (usually in the sunny fields), and although it was hot, the tea would cool them.

The tea also had a calming effect, which was just what one needed after a stressful day. Gerri has always resonated with tea, as in her upbringing it symbolized socializing and making memories, and not just something you drink meaninglessly. Tea has significance that goes beyond sipping a drink; tea, for Gerri, is a way to bring people together, and inspire them to see the beautiful things in life.

Initially starting offering tea gatherings at home, Gerri soon realized she needed more space, as well as a legitimate place to accommodate the overflowing number of daily tea enthusiasts.

“Women began enjoying the experience I was offering because it was unique and everyone had so much fun.

At the time I was working for a catering company for many years, and was inspired to carry out my own passion for tea and delicious food, so I started High Tea with Gerri. My friends and family have always supported me and encouraged me to start my own business.”

High Tea with Gerri also complements other exciting events like bridal and baby showers (the most popular), birthdays, and blooming in popularity lately, mother and daughter tea time. She’s even dabbled in the luxury shopping scene hosting a gorgeous private

“I just had a friend visit from the Winnetka Indian Hills Country Club. She loved my tea room so much that she booked an event for all of the members, which is amazing! The loyalty I receive is so wonderful. It’s the biggest compliment when people return time after time”, she says.

Gerri’s children, who are all grown up now, have helped their mother prepare tea and appetizer treats for guests since they were children, in addition, to her dedicated staff of women. “Luba, my assistant, has been with me for 12 years and I don’t know what I would do without her. Sometimes she gets here at 5 am just to prepare hundreds of specialty sandwiches for an event. We prepare everything ourselves from growing the fresh leaves of the tea, to baking the The Russian community loves my tea room. They absolutely loved it.” While tea in America started getting popular about 5 years ago, Europeans live by the way of tea. “Starbucks started selling tea, for example and several other places too, and you can have tea at any restaurant with your dinner, but the experience is usually very impersonal”, Gerri shares. “That’s why people love my tea space. Women who have been all over the world for tea come to me, and the trend to bond over tea is getting more and more popular with the American community”, she says.

Gerri calls her tea room a destination – a nook in this vast world where people with the intention of making lasting memories go. Gerri’s Tea room is not a place you happen to stumble upon. “People are prepared when they visit my tea room and most have high expectations for their experience”, Gerri shares. “But that’s what I offer: an experience, so you rarely see people just “dropping by”.”

And the scones…those alone make a great reason to visit the tea room. Hand mixed incorporating raisins (and cranberries and oranges for the holiday season), Gerri’s scones melt in your mouth like an ice cream cone on a summer day. Scones are served with fresh lemon curd, strawberry preserve adorned with a special homemade devonshire cream (an Irish tradition). She also serves traditional Scottish smoked salmon pinwheels and succulent beef tenderloin triangles served with lemon basil mayonnaise and crispy arugula.

Gerri opens up that her tea room is a journey – as well as a work in progress. Her newest excursion, tea and theatre, is attracting unexpected guests, and Gerri is delighted to be able to offer her venue in more creative ways – to broaden the tea experience for all.

ервыми пожеланиями королевы Виктории после коронации были чашка чая и свежий номер лондонской “Таймс”. Любовь к чаю я полностью разделяю с Ее Величеством, а вот газету, если бы спрашивали меня, заменил бы на книгу Чарльза Диккенса. Классик английской литературы – писатель удивительно домашний. Его хорошо читать долгими зимними вечерами, развалившись в уютном кресле у камина и попивая английский чай. Язык Диккенса нетороплив, он полон психологически достоверных характеров, точных описаний быта, философских размышлений. Его литературные герои написаны так выпукло и живо, они настолько театральны, что так и просятся на подмостки. Любовь к театру лейтмотивом проходит через всю жизнь Диккенса. Едва научившись грамоте, он вообразил себя драматургом. Диккенс мечтал стать профессиональным актером и горько сожалел о том, что это ему сделать не удалось – болезнь помешала ему принять участие в пробах, которые организовывал Ковент-Гарден. он стал репортером и сравнивал английский парламент с театром: “Нельзя сказать, что, устраивая на потеху всей страны бесплатные представления, эти люди внушают уважение к своей профессии”. Не сумев стать профессиональным актером, Диккенс все-таки создал свой собственный театр, в котором делал

Его труппа играла в Лондоне и Бирмингеме, Эдинбурге и Глазго, Манчестере и Ливерпуле, и везде спектакли имели огромный успех. В 1852 году Диккенс поставил водевиль, в котором исполнял шесть ролей: адвоката, лакея, пешехода, ипохондрика, глухого пономаря и даже... старой дамы. А его домашние спектакли?! Его современники рассказывают об одном безудержно веселом Рождестве. Заводилой праздника был, конечно, Диккенс. он заранее купил себе полный набор предметов, необходимых фокуснику, и у себя в комнате каждый вечер учился проделывать разные загадочные вещи. он заставлял карманные часы исчезать и вновь появляться неведомо откуда; по его велению деньги из правого кармана вдруг оказывались в левом; он сжигал носовые платки, затем дотрагивался до золы волшебной палочкой, и платки возвращались к жизни; он превращал ящик с отрубями в живую морскую свинку, насыпал в мужскую шляпу муки, добавлял сырых яиц, держал все это на большом огне, а потом извлекал из шляпы горячий, дымящийся пудинг с изюмом и возвращал шляпу владельцу целой и невредимой... однако при невероятной сценичности диккенсовских персонажей экранизировать его в кино или ставить в театре очень сложно. Тем не менее тридцать семь лет назад в чикагском goodman Theatre поставили рождественские истории великого английского писателя, объединив их в спектакль “Рождественская сказка”. (Сценическую редакцию спектакля создал чикагский драматург Том Кример.) Театральный рассказ о счастливом перерождении “старого греховодника и скволыги“ Скруджа, умевшего “выжимать соки, вытягивать жилы, вколачивать в гроб, загребать, захватывать, заграбастывать, вымогать”, в “хорошего и пушистого” джентльмена получился по-хорошему традиционным. Наверно, это и к лучшему – Диккенс в осовременивании не нуждается! Прислушайтесь к описанию Скруджа: “Душевный холод заморозил изнутри старческие черты его лица, заострил крючковатый нос, сморщил кожу на щеках, сковал походку, заставил посинеть губы и покраснеть глаза, сделал ледяным его скрипучий голос. И даже его щетинистый подбородок, редкие волосы и брови, казалось, заиндевели от мороза”. Да это готовый типаж – бери и играй в точном соответствии с авторскими ремарками! Именно так – дотошно и достоверно – ведет свою роль один из лучших чикагских (и не только) актеров Ларри Яндо – лауреат премии “Джефф”-2014 за лучшую мужскую роль (“Пляска смерти” в Writers Theatre) и недавний Король Лир в Шекспировском театре.

Итак, однажды снежным декабрьским вечером накануне Рождества Скруджу приснился сон. Во сне к нему пришли призраки, и вместе с ними он отправился в путешествие по своей жизни. Вот он в молодости – скрытный, замкнутый, одинокий человек, прячущийся, как устрица, в свою раковину. Вот его компаньон Марли, его племянник Фред, первая любовь, секретарь Боб Кратчит... Далеко-далеко лежал путь Скруджа с призраками, “и немало посетили они жилищ, и немало повидали отдаленных мест, и везде приносили людям радость и счастье. Призрак стоял у изголовья больного, и больной ободрялся и веселел; он приближался к скитальцам, тоскующим на чужбине, и им казалось, что отчизна близко; к изнемогающим в житейской борьбе – и они окрылялись новой надеждой; к беднякам – и они обретали в себе богатство”. Увидев себя со стороны, Скрудж ужаснулся прожитой жизни, проснулся, со словами “Я искуплю свое прошлое настоящим и будущим!” встал с кровати и... стал другим. Из эгоиста и скряги он превра-

тился в доброго старика, готового помочь людям, и впервые почувствовал себя счастливым. он посылает мальчишку в продуктовую лавку купить самую большую индюшку, заходит в церковь, бродит по улицам, беседует с нищими, а когда смеркется, идет на званый ужин в дом племянника. “И таким он стал добрым другом, таким хозяином и таким щедрым человеком, что наш славный старый город может им только гордиться”, – пишет Диккенс. от излишнего морализаторства спектакль, как и книгу, спасает чувство юмора, а также убедительная игра актеров и особенно присутствие на сцене детей – вот кто наиболее органично вписался в викторианскую Англию XIX века! Впечатляют неожиданные находки режиссуры. Например, призраки в этой сказке летают в прямом смысле этого слова. В программке специально указана компания, предоставившая театру летающие спецэффекты. Будущие ужасы в аду, которые ожидали Скруджа, пока он не изменился к лучшему, показаны так убедительно, что сидевшие рядом со мной дети иногда закрывали уши и зажмуривали глаза. Все было очень шумно и страшно. К счастью, это продолжалось недолго. Скрудж помог детишкам, и все зажили дружно и счастливо... Спектакль “Рождественская сказка” приобрел огромную популярность в Чикаго. Стало хорошей традицией сходить всей семьей на новогоднее представление в goodman Theatre. Неслучайно этот спектакль держится в репертуаре театра вот уже тридцать семь лет! За эти годы спектакль ставили восемь режиссеров (в этом году третий раз – заместитель художественного руководителя театра Генри Вишкампер), роль Скруджа в молодости исполняли тридцать два мальчика, роль взрослого Скруджа – восемь актеров. За эти годы спектакль посетили около двадцати трех тысяч зрителей. Среди них, наверняка, есть уже дети тех, кто видел его в прошлом. Предпраздничное настроение в зале совпадает в эти дни с настроением улицы. “В Рождество все немного волхвы...” В двух шагах от театра сияет огромная нарядная елка, на лотках выставлены новогодние игрушки, “сетки, сумки, авоськи, кульки, шапки, галстуки, сбитые набок...”, одним словом, везде царит обычная предпраздничная суета. “Счастливого Рождества!” – говорит всем Скрудж. “Счастливого Рождества!” – отвечают ему люди. “Счастливого Рождества и счастливого Нового года!” – поют актеры финальную песню, и зал с воодушевлением подпевает им.
