WELCOME Welcome to the Greater Columbus Chapter’s 25th Anniversary of the Humanitarian of the Year award, celebrating Dr. Amy Acton and Central Ohio’s Healthcare Community. For 25 years, we have honored humanitarian action throughout our community, but this year is unprecedented. In 2020, millions of people were impacted by a chain of relentless wildfires, raging hurricanes and a massive derecho. Homes burned and flooded. In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, some people lost it all. But the Red Cross helped on a massive scale—averaging a new disaster response nearly every day. The Red Cross is never alone in the humanitarian effort to alleviate human suffering in the face of emergencies. The Central Ohio Healthcare community collaborated and partnered to develop more effective treatment strategies, prevention techniques and resources, sharing triumphs and knowledge—for the benefit of all. As we commemorate the one-year milestone of the pandemic, we also mark a year of tremendous generosity across the country, where tens of thousands of individuals who recovered from COVID-19 have rolled up their sleeves to give convalescent plasma. Over the past year, the Red Cross has distributed more than 150,000 plasma products from individuals across the nation who have recovered from COVID-19 to help with treatment for patients battling the virus. Your Greater Columbus Chapter of the American Red Cross is made up of more than 1,000 volunteers who provide disaster relief, training in life-saving skills, blood services, services to the Armed Forces, and other critical community services throughout Ohio every day. Along with our generous donors, volunteers are the lifeblood of who we are. As a global leader in delivering humanitarian aid and helping people in some of the world’s most at-risk communities, the American Red Cross has worked to meet immediate needs and engage in long-term prevention, recovery and reconstructive efforts. Together, we provide help and hope when it is needed most. We are inspired by the dedication of healthcare workers. We are honored to present this year’s Humanitarian Award to Dr. Amy Acton and the Central Ohio Healthcare Community for their exceptional humanitarianism. Additionally, we sincerely thank our volunteers and generous donors—including the sponsors of today’s program—for helping ensure that the Red Cross will always be the best part of someone’s worst day.
