ust like that, the holidays are upon us. For us, this truly is the most wonderful time of the year. The family traditions, the time spent with good friends and good cheer and the moments of reflection make this season one that we always cherish. It seems that now, more than ever, our community is ready to celebrate. To gather with loved ones. To come together in support of our local businesses and to revel in the beauty that surrounds us. In Cherry Creek, that beauty is abundant – both literally and figuratively.

ROCHELLE MCNAUGHTON I’ve been in the real estate business for more than 20 years, selling luxury homes in all communities from Cherry Creek to North Denver to Castle Rock, while living in and specializing in the Cherry Hills and Greenwood Village enclaves. I view my profession as a career, not a part-time activity. When you contact me about selling your home, or searching for your perfect new home, you can be confident that you will be partnering with a seasoned real estate pro.

Today’s buyers are discerning and design-driven, making it more important than ever for a home to be not only inviting and attractive, but also up-to-date before it hits the market.

Breakfast Nooks

Designers are shying away from painting an entire room in a bold color, and instead are looking up! Painted ceilings are the latest trend, offering oomph and interest to your space while leaving it neutral on the main walls and allowing artwork and accessories to tell the story. A painted ceiling, be it a solid color or a pattern, gives any room a high design look without a major commitment.

International tiles are all the rage and are being used everywhere from kitchen backsplashes, to bathroom floors, to fireplaces and even full rooms as wallcoverings. These graphic tiles give a space plenty of personality and charm and make a huge statement. Gone are the days of boring white subway tiles. In their place we are seeing materials from Morocco, Majorca and more.

Formal dining rooms are going by the wayside and have been replaced by more casual, convivial breakfast nooks. Designers are using built ins and banquettes to carve out eating spaces off the kitchen. Used for so much more than breakfast, nooks are perfect for family dining, homework, and dinner parties. It’s the evolution of the open concept at its very best.

ELEVATE YOUR SWEAT, CHANGE YOUR LIFE. All sweat is not created equal .

It’s true. There is a big difference between traditional saunas and infrared sauna pods, like those found at Cherry Creek’s top wellness facility, CYL Sauna Studio. Take away everything you thought you knew about saunas – this version is unlike anything you may have tried. Located in the heart of Cherry Creek North on Third Avenue between Josephine and Columbine, CYL is a luxury infrared sauna studio where guests enjoy their own personal infrared sauna pod within the serenity of a private sauna suite. A standard sweat session is 30 minutes long and burns up to 600 calories. All while laying down and relaxing. “Our saunas are designed for the deepest most detoxifying sweat possible using infrared heat,” explains owner Crystal Callipari. “Conventional hot rock saunas heat the air with steam, which can be unbearably hot and will cause you to only sweat at the surface of the tissue. Steam also makes air difficult to breathe. Infrared heat therapy heats the body directly rather than just the air. An infrared sauna uses soothing, dry infrared heat that is well ventilated and extremely comfortable and relaxing,” she finishes.

What is infrared heat therapy?

Infrared light is part of the Sun’s invisible spectrum. Remember the last time you were sunbathing with sunscreen? Were you still hot? Of course you were, because the sunscreen only blocks portions of the UV light from hitting your skin. Far infrared light

heat penetrates your skin, giving you that wonderful warmth. Unlike ultraviolet light, it does not cause sunburn or damage to your skin. In fact, it is so safe that it is used in hospitals to warm newborn infants. Infrared light is part of the Sun’s invisible spectrum and one of its key characteristics is the ability to be absorbed through the skin. When this happens, it creates a natural resonance, which has many beneficial properties.

“Sweating is your body’s natural way to heal and stay healthy. Our saunas are designed for the deepest most detoxifying sweat possible using infrared heat.”

What are the benefits?

“Throughout the course of our daily lives, our bodies absorb toxic compounds through ingestion, our skin and the air we breathe. Even if you try and do all the right things – exercising routinely, eating organic foods, drinking plenty of water, getting quality sleep – keeping our bodies free from toxins is a struggle. Infrared saunas are the superheroes in the detoxification effort,” Callipari affirms. Infrared saunas increase the body’s core temperature, resulting in a much deeper, more purifying sweat at the cellular level where many toxins are stored. This speeds oxygen flow and increases circulation. Far infrared saunas have been shown to assist in weight loss, pain management, skin rejuvenation, detoxification and stress reduction. They can also provide relief to patients suffering from arthritis, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, and certain skin conditions. “Sweating is your body’s safe and natural way to heal and stay healthy,” Callipari attests. “In fact, it will change your life.”

THE INSPIRATION “Families have become reacquainted with their homes and a sense of togetherness over this past two years. As such, we wanted our holiday cover to incorporate touches of home with a subtle nod to Norman Rockwell. With the neutral mix of whites and soft evergreen, our darling “models” were able to take center stage. Gathering around the tree just felt right for this season’s cover. When I saw the gorgeous set that my talented friend and photographer, Laura Esmond of Reese & Co put together, I knew that it had to be the backdrop.”

-Betsy Marr, Publisher

cenes S e h t d Behin

THE PHOTOGRAPHER Laura Esmond is the dynamic owner of Reese & Co, a Denverarea photography studio specializing in children and families. As a mother of three children, she recognized a disconnect between stunning modern portraiture at a reasonable cost and an easy, incredible experience for parents and kids alike. Originally a wedding photographer, the 20-year industry veteran says that after having her first daughter, her perspective shifted. “Suddenly, it was all about the little things — her tiny lashes, that first birthday, and a million small milestones along the way,” she shares. “I wanted to give mothers and their families this same gift of documenting milestones, with an experience that would add value to their lives instead of more stress.” Today, Esmond and her team at Reese & Co are known as the “go to” photographers for the city’s most stylish families. Reese & Co / reeseandcoportraits.com / @reeseandcoportraits

IN HER WORDS “We want children to enjoy being in our studio, so we design sets to engage them in an activity. Trimming the tree is a tradition that never gets old and one kids look forward to. In our family we make popcorn and bake cookies, turn on a movie and decorate the tree. Hearkening back to these age-old traditions is part of what makes the holidays so special.”

DE L I - C I OUS SEQUEL Zaidy’s – the Jewish deli that became a Cherry Creek institution for more than 35 years – has once again opened its doors. After closing its former First Avenue location in October, the beloved deli now calls 600 South Holly Street in Virginia Vale home with new co-owners Max Appel, son Joel Appel and Beth Ginsberg alongside original owner Gerard Rudofsky. “We wanted to create a household name that the Denver community could know and love for the next 35 years,” Joel Appel explains. “Zaidy’s was a Denver staple for decades and when I received the opportunity to join the team for the revival of such an amazing restaurant, I couldn’t pass it up. I wanted to help bring back the heritage and community

that came with the Zaidy’s name,” he continues. Appel and his team say that they’ll be taking the Jewish deli experience to a new level by using the freshest, most local ingredients possible, all while staying true to Zaidy’s original recipes. New to the location is an in-house bakery offering freshly baked bagels, homemade breads, and pastries. “We will also be smoking our own salmon and roasting our own meats! These small changes make a huge impact. You can truly taste the difference,” Appel attests. Open from 7 am to 4 pm daily for breakfast and lunch, the new Zaidy’s has over 100 seats and plenty of parking.

THE GIFT THAT KEEPS ON GIVING “I looked at Latin root words and found ‘lev’ which means to make lighter, as in “elevate” or “alleviate,” and ‘ory’ which means a place for. I thought The Levory would be perfect — it’s a place where you can come to make your worries lighter and your mood brighter.” Owner Shelby McElwain’s home and gift store on East 3rd Avenue is intended to provide people with the things that make their home more beautiful, and gifts that will bring joy to others. Having studied both art and art history in college and a love for interior design, McElwain believes that home should be a stress-free place where you can recharge and relax. People can find a wide variety of things for their home like accent chairs, tables, pillows, throws, art prints, and lamps. The Levory also has great gift items like candles, barware, handmade pottery, books, and jewelry. M

STRAIGHT UP Co-owners John (Wally) Wallrath and Dan Ohlson of Machete Tequila & Tacos in Cherry Creek are planning to go upstairs next year for a new cocktail and wine bar called Derecho, which is Spanish for “straight.” Located above Machete’s location at 2817 East 3rd Avenue (the former Vinue Food and Wine Bar space), the 1,800-square-foot watering hole will include two new bars and a private mezzanine. Slated to open in early 2022, Wallrath explains, “We started serving tacos in Cherry Creek 10 years ago, and now there’s one on every corner, so we thought a cool cocktail bar with a great wine list would give people a new option. The synergy between the two concepts will work because we want people who can’t get into Machete or vice versa to have an easy spot to visit.” Derecho will serve a limited menu of food, a wide array of wine and classic cocktails such as Negronis and Hemingway daiquiris. Wallrath said they plan to open the bar starting at 3 pm during the week and 11 am on the weekends. “Rather than a $26 New York-style cocktail, we’re going to be a few dollars lower than everyone in town. We wanted to build something that the neighborhood didn’t even know it needed. Every new hotel has a speakeasy or a fancy bar. And if you’re in flip flops hanging out on a Sunday or on a bike ride, maybe you don’t feel comfortable going to those places. So, we want to give everyone a more casual option.” M

WATCH OUT Following the successful sell-out of last year’s special edition, Oster Jewelers of Cherry Creek North is introducing three new exclusive series of watches. The watches are a collaboration between Oster Jewelers and famed independent watchmakers Armin Strom and Kari Voutilainen. The model is Armin Strom’s award-winning Gravity Equal Force, which is a visually compelling watch with a remarkable self-winding caliber realized and created by Armin Strom. The Equal Force is an innovation by head watchmaker, Claude Greisler, ensuring constant force from the mainspring to the escapement for the most stable performance in a modern automatic winding watch. The incredible movement plate and dial center is hand-guilloché by famed dial and watchmaker, Kari Voutilainen. The “Tapestry” pattern for the dial plate was inspired by a particular vintage wristwatch from the 1950s that Jeremy Oster sold more than 20 years ago and has never been seen since. This pattern has been re-imagined in a contemporary execution perfectly blended with the vintage and modern aspects of the remarkable Gravity Equal Force. Each of the three series consist of only eight pieces that will be created by hand exclusively for Oster Jewelers. M

LET’S GET READY TO RUMBLE! Rumble Boxing has landed an uppercut in Cherry Creek North. Founded in 2017 in New York City, Rumble is boxing-inspired group fitness designed for all levels from beginner to advanced. It’s a 45-minute, 10-round full-body boxing and strength workout crafted around specially designed, water-filled, teardrop-style boxing bags. It’s divided between two styles of training: exploring the skills and drills of boxing, and also focusing on the transformative power of strength training. When Rumble says, “10 rounds, 2 fists, ZERO experience necessary,” they truly mean it. It’s not uncommon to see first-time boxers next to Rumble pros or amateur fighters. Created to shake up the stale norms of the group fitness world, no matter your fitness level, they glove up and Rumble together.

POINT BLANK Coming to Cherry Creek in early 2022 is Blank Bar, a Parisian-inspired wine bar with a focus on community connection, drinking great wines with small bites, and perhaps a few piano sing-along nights with Champagne flowing. Blank Bar will feature 30-to40 wines by the glass, sourced from clean, minimalist producers from the corners of the world. Co-founder Zack Jarmon is growing his brand within the Cherry Creek community,

which started with his successful barbershop, Blank Barbers. His concept is inspired by his experiences growing up in Paris, and the unique intimacy of its neighborhoods. The minimal décor will act as a “blank” canvas and is intended to foster connection. Jarmon has teamed up with veteran wine pro Joel Kampfe to realize their vision of creating a fun, unpretentious space for the community to simply relax, strike up a conversation, and drink some great wine. “Blank Bar is all about approachability and accessibility for all, cutting out the pretentiousness surrounding wine. Whether you’re drinking our Frosé or a glass of Châteauneuf du Pape, a good time will be had by everyone,” Kampfe says. Kampfe will be curating a bythe-glass list with a range from under $10 (but impressive) to a $55 “musttry before you die” selection.

GAL ABOUT TOWN MELISSA OSTER | OSTER JEWELERS Mention Melissa Oster to anyone in the Cherry Creek community and they’re sure to smile – she’s been a staple of the neighborhood’s small business scene for decades. With an eye for style and design, the Oster Jewelers co-owner outfits the city’s most fashionable women in head-turning baubles. Here, she shares her secrets for the ultimate day in Cherry Creek, where she loves to dine, and the next spot on her travel itinerary.

Tell us a little bit about your background… Thanks to my parents who had incredible taste and designs skills, I’ve always surrounded myself with beautiful objects. They both had a remarkable affinity for detail, art and style which profoundly shaped my appreciation for artistry. I come from a line of entrepreneurs, so it was natural for me to forge a path of my own. After living in Aspen, it was time for a new adventure, so my husband Jeremy and I decided to unite our talents and bring our particular brand of luxury, Oster Jewelers, to the Denver area.

Describe your personal style. My personal style is driven by whimsy and mood and is defined by a sort of bohemian, casual chic with no desire for pretense. My finds can be sourced from friends’ local boutiques, designer or vintage shops or something picked up at an unusual place like a hospital gift shop or hardware store! But it is of course all brought together with great jewelry and a cool watch. Jewelry makes any outfit come alive and truly defines one’s personal style and identity.

What is your favorite thing about Cherry Creek? My husband and I traveled the entire country before deciding Cherry Creek North would be the location for our store nearly 20 years ago. I valued the sense of community and many independent owner-operated stores. My driving force and favorite aspect of Cherry Creek is our many clients who have become our friends. I also love how dog friendly we are in Cherry Creek North. Most importantly, I cherish the close friends I have made within the neighborhood and the opportunity to work closely with my family - a gift for which I am most grateful.

Who is your style icon? My Mother. Her style was classic designer with a twist. She worked in fine fashion for many years and had the most incredible eye. She could zero in on a great item from across the room and had a knack for pulling it all together.

A friend is coming to visit Cherry Creek for the first time. What are the “insider tips” you share with her before her stay?

Favorite Cherry Creek restaurant?

The first tip: Bring good walking shoes. Cherry Creek North is a fabulous walking district. From Steele to University, there is so much to discover and explore with unique, independently owned and operated boutiques. And bring your appetite as anything your taste buds desire can be found in Cherry Creek North.

La Merise is a favorite, especially their daily specials and secluded patio. They are independently owned and create perfectly prepared dishes with attentive service. The lack of pretense suits my laid-back style.

Favorite way to relax on a weekend? Relaxing for me is spending quality time with my family, however, relaxing is not my strongpoint. I am always on the go and travel rejuvenates my soul. Traveling to incredible destinations around the globe for watches and jewelry was always on the calendar preCovid. Hopefully, we will soon be able to go back to places like Geneva, Florence and London for watch and jewelry events and other interesting destinations as opportunities present themselves.

Most beautiful place you’ve visited in Colorado? In the world? Aspen is at the top of my list as it is where Jeremy and I met and lived, and it is so visually stunning. As an international destination it is a town of adventure, fascinating characters, and many fond memories. We have been fortunate to see many beautiful spots in the world, but my absolute favorite is a beach of outstanding natural beauty with gentle lapping waves, super-soft sand, and warm breezes. It is beyond beautiful and undiscovered and will remain my secret!

Do you “collect” anything? I collect art in the form of jewelry and mechanical watches. With more than 20 years in fine watches and jewelry, I have enjoyed the privilege of getting to know some of the world’s most celebrated watchmakers and artisans, such as Michel Parmigiani. Seeing for myself how works of art are still created by hand instills an appreciation that makes me keen to own pieces for my own pleasure and satisfaction. And yes, it is true that I once sold my car to buy a beautiful watch that I wanted!

JAMES MUCKER SALON UTOPIA Award-winning stylist James Mucker, co-owner of Cherry Creek North’s Salon Utopia, is an incredible storyteller. Why was the Denver SWAT team called to the salon? What’s the last song he cranked up in the car? What city does he describe as the “most fun ever”? Our latest Man About Town does not disappoint.

Do you have any favorite haunts in the neighborhood? Salon Utopia of course. I just can’t get enough of this place.

What’s the most memorable moment you’ve witnessed while working at Salon Utopia? When the SWAT team showed up at the salon. There was a hostage situation taking place in a vehicle located directly downstairs on our side of the street. Third Avenue and Josephine Street was completely blocked off, and there were snipers on the top of our building and across the street. The place was surrounded, and people were still calling the salon to come in and get their hair done!

Where are you going for your next vacation? Hawaii

Who are your five dream party guests, and what are you eating? Diana Ross, Vanessa Williams, Grace Jones, Beyoncé and George Benson. We are having a 7-course meal: Hors d’oeuvre: Asian Chicken Kabobs Soup: Chicken Soup Salad: Chicken Caesar Salad Main Course: Grilled Stuffed Chicken Dessert: Peach Cobbler Mignardise: Cuban Coffee and a piece of Swiss Chocolate

What’s the last movie you enjoyed watching?

The most fun you’ve had in a city is where?

Cruella

Touring and shopping in London was amazing and the best experience I’ve ever had! Beauty Underground preformed at the Albert Hall Theater. I shopped at Balenciaga, and saw Grace Jones in concert! I would love to go back for another visit.

What’s a surprising fact to working in your industry that people working outside of it may not know? Well, I was just inducted into the Hairstylist Hall of Fame and won the Hairstylist of the Year award! Many people don’t know this, but I started doing hair when I was six-years-old! My mother was a teacher and she taught hair. During the summer, my family and I would go visit my mother’s friend in Waco, Texas, where she owned her own salon. As I mentioned, I was six when I received my first job, shampooing and cleaning out rollers for clients. I’ve always had an interest in hairdressing. My sister would have sleepovers when we were younger with her friends and I gave them no choice but to play “beauty shop” with me. I would style their hair and paint their nails!

What would you tell your 18-year-old self now? You should have bought real estate! Also, I am so glad I pursued my cosmetology career because it has opened up more doors and more avenues than one can even dream of. It’s brought me a lot of success, allowing me to live a good life.

What’s the last song that you cranked up in your car? Hot in Herre by Nelly.

What are the four items you can’t live without? My home, my partner Lin, my work, and Gucci! M

ba BULL & BUSH’S JAMIE DIERKER It’s a Denver landmark celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. Award-winning beer and spirits. A sports bar that opened in 1971. Food. Music. Comfortable. Inviting. It’s Bull & Bush, and Jamie Dierker joins us from behind the bar for our latest edition of Bar Cart. What’s the best drink we’ve never had? Our Legend of the Liquid Brain Imperial Stout. It is a fantastic beer and the best imperial stout I’ve ever had. Bull and Bush hasn’t always been a brewery, but we have won many awards for our beer through the years. We started brewing around 1997, well before Denver’s scene began to explode. This beer is aged 12 months in Kentucky bourbon barrels, creating a very smooth finish and complementing the chocolate notes and rich roasted malt flavor. Our 2017, 2019, and 2021 vintages are available for purchase at the brewery in bottles. The beer can also be aged for years in a proper cellar environment and its flavor will develop with time.

Is there a cocktail with a particularly interesting backstory that you appreciate? Our B&B Old Fashioned is a strained old fashioned and the primary whiskey used changes periodically. The two owners, brothers David and Erik Peterson, choose a single barrel of bourbon from various distilleries and buy the barrel. Occasionally I am allowed to taste and help choose the barrel as well. We have used a 12-year-old Eagle Rare single barrel for the cocktail, a single barrel of Elijah Craig, and currently we are using a single barrel of Russel’s Reserve bourbon. When we run out of the barrel, which happens a few times a year, we bring on a new one. So this cocktail definitely has a personal touch.

How did you get into the industry? I fell in love with beer. The university I attended in Ohio had very educational beer tastings every month or so, and I started attending them and developing my palate. I took a trip to Belgium for a two-week beer tour of the country in 2013 with the organizer and leader of these tastings. I started working in the beer industry in my hometown, and once I learned there was a beer expert-equivalent of a sommelier, called a Cicerone, I began studying beer more intently. I moved to one of the most (if not the most) progressive beer markets in the country, here in Colorado, a couple

38

FA L L / WI N T ER 2 0 2 1

years later. I applied for jobs at a ton of breweries and taprooms and landed here at the Bull and Bush. The beer we make is incredible, and we have one of the best whiskey, bourbon and scotch selections in Denver. I started to learn more about these different spirits as well. I still learn something new almost every day. I love talking about beer and helping our guests to have the best experience possible.

What’s the vibe at Bull & Bush? Casual and friendly. Bull and Bush has a very homey feel to it, with its dark wood and knick knacks and the warm glow of the fireplace and the candles on the tables and behind the bar. The theme of the Bull and Bush is a sports bar. We were the first in Glendale in 1971. Football Sundays are still going strong every week in the fall and winter, and we are always proudly showing the Avalanche, Nuggets and Rockies games on our 25 TVs. Long before the days of the brewery this was a very popular spot in the ‘70s. The bar has been in the same family for all of its 50 years, as David and Erik’s father and uncle are the original proprietors, and it retains the air of the family-run business. I love this and I think it translates to the guests as well. You can be sure to run into either David or Erik on any given night of the week, which speaks volumes about their commitment to the business and their employees.

Is there a particular drink that you love to make? Our Black Manhattan. I love rye whiskeys and we use a rye in this cocktail along with an amaro as a substitution for sweet vermouth, which rounds out the flavor of this cocktail beautifully.

What’s the oddest drink order you’ve ever received? Probably when a guest wanted me to approximate the flavor of a pumpkin spice latte into a shot. I tried many times and I think I got it close, but that was very hard to do!

Where do you get your inspiration? I’m fairly new to creating cocktails and I am by no means an innovative genius, but I love going out and trying interesting cocktails at restaurants and bars and seeing what I could incorporate into our menu. We are a very high-volume establishment, so we like to keep things simple and traditional but very delicious. Traditionally, we are an English brewery and we have a very solid extra special bitter, called the Tower ESB, the Big Ben Brown which is an English style brown ale that won the World Beer Cup gold medal in 2018, and a house stout that is delightfully roasty called the Stonehenge Stout. But as we have 40 taps to choose from, there are a lot of other interesting beers as well. One that I love is called Turnip the Beets, which is a Belgian triple base with turnips and beets added, creating an earthy flavor and a rich purple color. This year’s version of Turnip the Beets was aged in Oloroso sherry barrels, which really smooths out the flavor. We also have a peach and green chile beer on draft currently called Patches that is very popular.

What’s a winter cocktail that you recommend? Hands-down, it would be our old fashioned. You can get the B&B Old Fashioned from our cocktail menu, which features our current specially chosen single barrel, as I’ve mentioned, or you can choose your bourbon or whiskey and personalize the cocktail a bit. That, or something even simpler is a hot toddy. I prefer to use agave syrup over honey in mine, as I think the agave allows the flavor of your chosen bourbon to shine more brightly in the drink.

QUALITY ITALIAN We’re married. We work together. We see each other all the time. So, what could we possibly talk about while out for dinner? In this case, food. And lots of it.

Kevin:

That was possibly the best bread

I love how understated the name of the restaurant is – Quality Italian. It reminds me of “Fresh Bread,” “Clean Sheets,” or “Cold Beer.” There’s so much more than just quality going on here once you arrive.

Betsy: I love the ambiance. It’s moody like an old school steakhouse, but somehow modern at the same time. It looks like a fun bar to sit at on a cold winter day. Kevin: Agreed. I dig this vibe they’ve created – the glow of low dimmed

service

chandeliers, leather booths, the soft hum of music in the background – all of it creates a very warm, private, getaway-type experience. Our waiter, Andrew, mentioned that it was all meant to remind guests of a New York City steakhouse.

Betsy: The cocktail list has me intrigued. You can tell that they really put a lot

of thought into it. According to the menu, the head barman, Bryan Schneider, hails from well-known spots in Brooklyn and Manhattan, and everything is handcrafted. There are a few I’d like to try, but the Pocket Dial gets my vote tonight. Ketal One, St. Germain, Cucumber and Basil. Yum. It’s easily one of Cherry Creek’s must-try drinks.

Kevin: When Andrew arrived with fresh baked monkey bread with garlic salt, he had me at, “Here’s our freshly baked monkey bread with garlic salt.”

Betsy: Yes, that was possibly the best bread service I’ve had. Ever. If we didn’t have several appetizers on their way, I would be fighting you for the last piece.

Kevin: Speaking of appetizers, here they are. Wow…what a spread!

Betsy: Filet Mignon Meatballs and Housemade Ricotta. I am in heaven. The local Colorado honey in the Ricotta is the perfect touch. Love this!

A REST AND RECOVERY WELLNESS CENTER

Kevin: Now that our main dishes are here, it’s time to indulge. We shared a steak together. I don’t think that’s ever happened before. Thanks for going medium on the filet. I know you like it a little rarer. Regardless, that melts in your mouth, doesn’t it?

Betsy: I was not expecting to order the steak at a restaurant with “Italian” in the title but am so glad we did. This is one of the best I’ve had in recent memory. I also love that they slice it for you in the kitchen. Call me crazy, but I spend half my day cutting food up into little pieces for toddlers. I appreciate not having to do so for myself.

Kevin: Ha! Well, we did cover the “Italian” portion as well with this order of Spicy Lobster Rigatoni. I love a pasta that hits me back with some heat.

Betsy: It’s to die for. I could eat this every single day. The vodka sauce and crispy garlic are out of this world and the lobster is so fresh. For me, it’s the perfect dish. Kevin: Let’s not forget the sides, which in any other instance would be the stars of the show in their own right. The Brussels Sprouts Calabrese dish is super addicting. Since they fried them, this char and crisp action makes it so I can’t stop eating them. I’ll definitely get this again. Betsy: Can we talk about this Spicy Crab and Avocado dish for a minute? It’s such an unexpected complement to the meal. What do you think of it?

Kevin: Love the crab. Nice and spicy. The garlic croutons are delicious, too. Betsy: We are finishing up with dessert. I’m eyeing the Ferraro Rocher Gelato. Kevin: Definitely. Candied hazelnut, milk chocolate and crispy wafers? Twist my arm. Betsy: It’s perfect. Decadent but not too rich. I’m not sure what the difference between gelato and ice cream actually is, but after this, I’m voting for gelato. HYDRATE IV BAR Stay hydrated! We recommend starting your morning with eight ounces of water immediately, continuing throughout the day. Our go-to immune boosting vitamins are Vitamin D, Vitamin C and Zinc. Proper hydration is not only crucial to live but also necessary for your body to perform its most basic functions. Water is the most vital source of energy in the body. Water also flushes toxins out of the body, balances pH, delivers essential nutrients to cells, and regulates body temperature. The average adult loses 10 cups of water per day, and dehydration often results from prolonged sun exposure, physical activity, illness, caffeinated beverages and alcohol, to name a few. Fatigue, high blood pressure, skin disorders, high cholesterol, digestive disorders, constipation, joint pain and weight gain are all linked to dehydration. Vitamin C improves your body›s immune system and aids in tissue repair. Zinc is necessary for your immune system, metabolism and healing. Vitamin D facilitates normal immune system function, is important for the development of bones, and improves resistance against some diseases. GREEN KNIGHT CBD CHERRY CREEK The endocannabinoid system, with its complex actions in our immune system, nervous system, and all the body’s organs, is a bridge between body and mind. By understanding this system we begin to see a mechanism that explains how states of consciousness can promote health or disease. Endocannabinoids and their receptors are found throughout the body: in the brain, organs, connective tissues, glands, and immune cells. In each tissue, the cannabinoid system performs different tasks, but the goal is always the same: homeostasis. According to a survey published in Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research in 2018, almost 62 percent of cannabidiol users reported that they used CBD to treat a medical condition, with the top three conditions being pain, anxiety, and depression. The stunning behind-the-scenes life of Val Kilmer. The death-defying world of riding the biggest waves on the planet. A must-see documentary on the legend that’s become the late Anthony Bourdain. Jeff Daniels and the murder mystery in a small Pennsylvania town. A little bit of everything for this season.

WHAT WE’RE CURRENTLY WATCHING + READING

100 FOOT WAVE VAL I watched Real Genius (1985) in the theater three times that summer, and was immediately buying what Val Kilmer was selling. That was the beginning of a career that produced unforgettable performances in the likes of Top Gun, The Doors, Tombstone, Heat, Wonderland and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. VAL is the documentary centering on the daily life of Kilmer featuring never-before-seen footage spanning 40 years while he currently battles throat cancer. Fascinating. Pure. Off-the-wall. Heartwarming. Tragic. Raw. Val had a camera recording all the time, so the footage is as authentic as it gets with its back stories, commentary on roles and auditions, and behind-thescenes access.

I’m always going to gravitate to surfing material. This one is unlike any other, simply because of the monster involved. It follows the decade-long odyssey of big-wave pioneer Garrett McNamara who, after visiting a small fishing village in Portugal, helped push the sport beyond the realm of imagination and put the coastal town of Nazare on the global map. The fear. The unpredictable. The unfathomable. This six-episode series will have you wanting more while wondering why anyone would ever repeatedly put themselves in this life-or-death situation.

A true crime dramedy, a powerful look at misogyny in the media, and a campy rom-com set in Paris. My viewing lineup is perfect for holiday binge-watching.

EMILY IN PARIS ONLY MURDERS IN THE BUILDING There’s something about this clever dramedy that instantly caught my attention. With an ensemble cast that includes Steve Martin, Selena Gomez and Martin Short, the show brings together the trio of New York City neighbors who share an obsession with the same true crime podcast. When a murder occurs in the group’s uber luxe pre-war apartment building, they develop an unlikely bond as they become amateur sleuths determined to break the case. Both the characters and the story are quirky and eccentric, making the 10-episode Hulu original quite bingeable. I cannot wait for Season Two.

Sex and the City creator Darren Star hit a homerun with this one. The rom-com series is packed with Parisian revelry that will charm viewers with its delightfully breezy plot that follows a 20-something, up-and-coming publicist on her professional journey to the city of lights. In true Darren Star fashion, she reps luxury fashion brands and the show is replete with dreamy eye candy. It’s easy, whimsical and worry free. With Season Two premiering in late November, Emily in Paris makes the perfect home-for-the holidays binge watch.

ROADRUNNER: A FILM ABOUT ANTHONY BOURDAIN The fact that the late Anthony Bourdain is being featured in a documentary merely three years after his passing should not be understated. The power and impact that this man had on the culinary industry is immeasurable. His career as a chef, writer and host, revered and renowned for his authentic approach to food, culture and travel are all chronicled in this one-of-a-kind inside look at one of the most captivating personalities the kitchen has ever seen.

Watch it on HBO Max

AMERICAN RUST Two words – Jeff Daniels. That’s why I watched this. The man can do no wrong with me, and this installment proved no different. American Rust is a compelling family drama that explores the tattered American dream through the eyes of complicated and compromised chief of police Del Harris (Daniels) in a Rust Belt town in southwest Pennsylvania. When you think you know who did what to whom, this mystery thriller reminds you of who’s in charge with the kinds of twists and turns that keep you hanging until the end of this nine-episode drama.

Watch it on Showtime

THE MORNING SHOW While it’s true that I would watch anything starring Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon, The Morning Show deserves a look even if you’re not a fangirl like me. Loosely based on the reallife improprieties that have wreaked havoc on the entertainment industry, the series is dramatic, relevant, and captivating. Now in its sophomore season, The Morning Show boasts an all-star cast that, in addition to Aniston and Witherspoon, includes names like Steve Carrell playing the troubled antagonist, Billy Crudup as the irreverent and likeable network president, and Mark Duplass as Aniston’s dutiful producer. The show tackles real world events like COVID-19, the Las Vegas massacre, California wildfires and of course, “Me Too,” with compelling dialogue and rich storylines. New to Season Two is Julianna Margulies, who plays a whip-smart journalist doing an investigative feature on the problems at the network. At times bizarre, but appealing all the same, The Morning Show is a must-see on my list.

nique homes take unique people to own them, to have the vision to have build them, and ultimately, to buy them.” Bill Mascarenaz stands on the sprawling site on Quincy Avenue, looking outward towards the Rockies. Wetlands, a pond, majestic

trees and rolling fields surround him as the breeze dances through the brush for what seems like miles. Six years ago, the sprawling structure before him was merely a vision. Today, it stands as what will be one of Cherry Hills Village’s most prolific residences. Set to be completed later this year, Clearview Farm is named for the unobstructed mountain views seen from multiple vantage points on the 14.5 acre property. For the better part of those six years, Mascarenaz and his team have been working to create a residence so special, so undeniably beautiful, so incredibly unique, that nothing in the region quite compares. Working with the industry’s most renowned and revered professionals, the vision came to fruition. A vision that was predicated on building a home that felt innately authentic to its surroundings.

@CHE RRYCRE E K MAG

Heeding their cues from architecture’s most iconic names, the team paid careful attention to the land itself. “One of the things that Frank Lloyd Wright always considered was making his buildings ‘of the site.’ Meaning they didn’t overwhelm the setting. This property – with the way it is elongated – does just that,” Mascarenaz explains. Along with lauded Denver architect Carlos Alvarez of Alvarez Morris, he has watched the home at 4001 East Quincy Avenue develop from an esoteric concept to a tangible work of art. To his earlier point, the space is comprised of three separate barn-like structures, all of which lend themselves to the pastoral setting on which they sit. The 13,800-square-foot main house is on the highest point of the property and is comprised of four “barns” that roll down the hillside to the north. As exquisite as it is unique, the home is constructed with board-formed concrete, glass, zinc and Shou Sugi Ban – an ancient Japanese exterior cedar technique that preserves wood by charring it with fire. The meticulous process involves burning, cooling and cleaning the wood before treating it with a natural oil. The result? The perfect marriage of centuries old artistry and unrivaled modernity. Soaring 22-foot ceilings in the great room showcase the custom Capoferri windows from Italy that frame the gorgeous mountain views to the west, marking another of the home’s unique points of architectural difference.

Nearby, the Boffi designed kitchen offers a clean, sleek look, while remaining family friendly. The main floor is also home to a library with expansive views and a beautifully appointed guest suite. The entire main level features polished concrete floors, which are ideal in both their beauty and durability. Upstairs, Dinesen wide plank flooring adds a warmer feel to the design. The impressive master retreat, which will be built above the custom swimming pool, has dual walk-in closets and two water closets. The space is totally embraced by walls of windows and doors, allowing for commanding views across the entire property. Nearby is a large common area intended for children, with its own exterior balcony and two bedroom suites. Just outside, a 75-by-10-foot pool and spa are being constructed below the rambling yellow cedar decks and will frame the outdoor kitchen and entertainment space. Clearview Farm is currently under construction with estimated completion scheduled in 2022.

The property is listed by Susie Dews and Jeff Hendley of Compass Denver. M

In a market rich with realtors, Ann Kerr stands out from the pack. And while her sales record speaks for itself, (Ann is recognized as one of Denver’s top producers and has been named to the Who’s Who of Luxury Real Estate) she’s anything but a salesperson, believing instead in the power of relationships. “I’m not very good at ‘selling’ per se – my view on brokerage is that my role is to help my client make the best buying or selling decision relying on my expertise, which may or may not result in a sale in the short term,” the long time Cherry Hills Village resident reveals. “I’m in it for the long haul and as a friend and neighbor to many of my clients, I value these personal relationships.” Indeed, her more than twenty-year tenure in the industry reflects the type of staying power that can only be achieved through honesty, integrity and unrelenting authenticity.

What’s more, when you hire Ann, you get Ann. “I answer phone calls and emails directly. It’s extremely important to me that I take responsibility for knowing every detail of every transaction,” she attests. A notion that may seem simple, but in a thriving market such as Denver’s, one that is far too often not the case. “There are so many ‘experts’ in the media providing misleading information which cannot be universally applied across the board to every home sale,” she explains. “A broker who has experience in your area and has been selling real estate through many market cycles can give the best advice on selling your home to the right buyer for the right price.” It’s this type of honesty and expertise that has made Ann not only a real estate leader, but a community leader as well. In fact, she has served on countless boards and committees including the Cherry Hills Village Planning and Zoning Commission, The John Lynch Foundation, University of Oklahoma Alumni Association, Swim Across America, the Cherry Hills Village Elementary School Accountability Committee, PIVOT, the Colorado Lacrosse Foundation, US Lacrosse and the University of Denver Lacrosse, and the Denver Ballet Guild.

I’m in it for the long haul and as a friend and neighbor to many of my clients, I value these personal relationships. Ann most definitely walks the walk, enlisting a wide variety of tools and programs for both buyers and sellers. “No two clients and no two homes are alike. I like to approach each listing from a fresh perspective, engaging my wide network of contacts and a wide variety of strategies – whether it’s a wine tasting event at a new listing or an article in a local publication – to sell a home.” This creativity, coupled with tried-and-true knowledge and a stellar reputation, serves her clients extremely well. “To be successful in any kind of real estate market, you must start with the needs of your clients, always be committed to those needs and utilize your experience to the maximum,” she finishes.

Scottsdale BY BETSY MARR From the towering Saguaros to the tony resorts, Scottsdale is a desert haven brimming with old west charm. Once the playground to the likes of Jacqueline Kennedy, Natalie Wood, and Marilyn Monroe, today’s version is a far cry from the sleepy oasis of years past. With a nightlife as cosmopolitan as its fashion scene and spa offerings as chic as the eateries that dot its downtown, this Scottsdale is all grown up.

@CHE RRYCRE E K MAG

“There’s no destination more perfectly suited for doing everything or doing nothing at all.”

Stay If you’re looking for unadulterated R&R, there’s no better escape than the Four Seasons Resort. Situated in the heart of the Sonoran Desert in the upscale Troon North enclave, the property was once the location of Crescent Moon Ranch, a finishing school for wealthy debutantes operated by a member of Kellogg family. Today, the resort boasts over 200 guest rooms brimming with southwestern spirit. Larger casita suites offer seclusion by way of private plunge pools and most have wood-burning chimineas on patios that look out on miles of desert and open sky. With access to Troon Golf Club and the bucket list Pinnacle and Monument 18-hole courses, Four Seasons leaves the links lover wanting for nothing. Or laze the afternoon away poolside where sun butlers serve the likes of popsicles, smoothies and more on the hour every hour. Those looking for a peaceful moment will appreciate the smaller adult only pool while those with little ones in tow

54

FA L L / WI N T ER 2 0 2 1

can opt for a smaller children’s version or the expansive free form bi-level main pool – all with sweeping desert views. Hint: book a private cabana and enjoy your own personal attendant, flat screen television, iPad and sound system. At night, stargaze with the resort’s professional astronomer, who offers a lesson in the solar system under some of the most stunning skies on the planet. Or for the ultimate romantic rendezvous, book a “Celestial Picnic.” Staffers will set up a lavish display on a secluded lawn prime for stargazing and complete with a telescope and bottle of champagne. In grand Scottsdale style, the Spa at the Four Seasons offers the amenities one would expect (and then some) – steam, sauna and a full service menu of Sonoran inspired treatments. Opt for the Prickly Pear Renewal, a relaxing scrub and rubdown that’s perfect for dry desert skin. Also book a Golfer’s Massage, where warmed golf balls and stretching techniques knead tight muscles and ease the stiffness from your swing.

Fun Facts • Starlets Natalie Wood and Robert Wagner were married at Scottsdale’s Valley Ho motel in December, 1957. • The town of Scottsdale plays host to more than 200 golf courses and has more spas per capita than any other US city. A playground, indeed.

Equally impressive are the resort’s dining options. With three distinctive restaurants plus a swanky bar, there’s something for every tastebud. Proof serves up an inventive twist on comfort food in an Americana-inspired atmosphere. An old-fashioned soda fountain offers to-die-for milkshakes and malts and the cocktail menu focuses on small-batch distilleries and microbrews. Talavera is the property’s fine dining restaurant, a modern take on the southwestern steakhouse. Locally sourced ingredients and a knowledgeable sommelier add up to an experience that will linger in your memory long after the tan lines fade. The chef’s tasting menu is a true culinary journey, allowing a guest to experience the restaurants full repertoire and authentic sense of place, along with perfectly paired wines for each of the six courses. For those wanting a more casual option, the poolside Saguaro Blossom doesn’t disappoint, or find a seat in Onyx Bar and Lounge and join the jetset cocktail culture. If the serenity of the wide-open desert is less your scene than say, a scene, Old Town Scottsdale has plenty of inns from which to choose. Try the colorful Saguaro Hotel, which manages to evoke an oasis-like feeling in the heart of the bustling town. The property is as trendy as they come, and offers cruiser bikes for guests to exploring the neighborhood al fresco.

• Scottsdale has been the backdrop of several Hollywood blockbusters; Raising Arizona, Wayne’s World and Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure were all filmed there.

• The saguaro cactuses that fill the

Sonoran Desert in and around Scottsdale can live as long as 150-200 years and can weigh over 3,000 pounds.

Play There’s no destination more perfectly suited for doing everything or doing nothing at all. Chameleon-like in its offerings, Scottsdale offers loads of adventure for the outdoor enthusiast. Hiking Camelback Mountain is a time honored Arizona tradition, with views of posh Paradise Valley and the stately homes that grace its basin. Or see the sites from above. Scottsdale is well known for its hot air ballooning that take guests up, up and away for a tour of the Sonoran Desert before landing and in grand French tradition, indulging in a champagne brunch.

@CHE RRYCRE E K MAG

See Architecture aficionados will want to make the Scottsdale trek to take in the abundance of Frank Lloyd Wright projects, if for no other reason. In particular, head to Taliesin West. The structural gem that once stood as Wright’s winter home is now home to his foundation and eponymous architecture school. Steeped in modern goodness and nestled in the foothills of the McDowell Mountains, it’s a genuine treat for Wright devotees who can revel in his sunken living room and imagine the conversations that once took place in the innovative space. A variety of tours are available, from deserts walks along the 491-acre preserve to a showcase of Wright’s private collections.

Spa It’s tough to go wrong if your goal is tranquility by way of a world-class spa. Scottsdale has, quite literally, hundreds from which to choose. Well & Being at Fairmont Scottsdale Princess boasts a rooftop pool, natural stone waterfalls and a nice blend of out-of-the-box fitness classes (think aerial hammock yoga) and top-of-theline spa treatments. Nearby, Joya Spa at the Omni Montelucia is one of Paradise Valley’s must-visit destinations. We love the Moroccaninspired “rituals” – try the 80-minute Restorative Sleep version, which centers on reflexology and aromatherapy. For the purist, the well-known and well-loved Spa at The Boulders Resort is a tried and true option. While its well-appointed

space is certainly impressive (steam, sauna, whirlpool, relaxation room, café), the quality of therapists – most of whom are industry veterans – and the jaw dropping landscape in the heart of the desert are the true stars.

Dine Scottsdale’s dining scene is one of the hottest in the country, with countless foodie havens opening year after year. Hush Public House delivers big flavors in its small Kierland Commons space. Crab Hush Puppies, Soba Noodles, Macaroni Au Gratin – the menu is as eclectic as it is tasty. Virtu Honest Craft is another can’t miss eatery, and has gained ample accolades both locally and nationally since first opening in 2013. The James Beard Award nominated Chef Gio Osso makes arguably the valley’s best pasta (try the Gnocchi), but everything on the elegant menu - from Branzino to brunch – is delightful. Atlas Bistro has been a Scottsdale favorite for years, and with good reason. Chef Cory Oppold’s fare is beautiful, original and downright delicious. Dishes such as poached pear with house-made ricotta and halibut with house-made udon noodles will have you talking about this meal long after it is done.

2022 FORD GT ’64 PROTOTYPE HERITAGE EDITION The newest Ford GT supercar is a tribute to the one that started it all. The 2022 Ford GT ’64 Prototype Heritage Edition has been designed to resemble the GT40 test cars that first raced at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1964 and set the groundwork for Ford’s historic 1966 victory in the race, as recounted in the film, Ford v. Ferrari. The $500,000+ coupe features a Wimbledon White exterior with Antimatter Blue graphics, carbon fiber wheels and interior accents. It’s the sixth and final tribute edition of the GT since it debuted in 2017. “This is the first Ford GT Heritage Edition that goes beyond celebrating race wins – this one goes deep, and honors the earliest of Ford supercar heritage,” said Ford GT program manager Mike Severson. “The Ford GT ’64 Prototype Heritage Edition is a modern interpretation of the original, with no mistaking what this car is paying tribute to.” The Heritage Edition car is mechanically the same as the standard GT and equipped with a 660 horsepower turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 which can propel it to a top speed of at least 216 mph. It made its public debut at the Monterey Car Week in August, ahead of the start of production in January. More at media.ford.com

PORSCHE MARSIEN Marc Philipp Gemballa has founded a new Porsche tuning company and is launching his first creation, a modified off-road supercar. Inspired by the Porsche 959 from the 1980s Paris-Dakar rallies and based on the 992-generation 911 Turbo S, it’s called the “Marsien,” and it will be limited to 40 units. Described as a hybrid combining modern sports car performance with everyday utility and off-road capabilities, the Marsien has a futuristic design and features cutting-edge tech. The muscular-looking body is made entirely from carbon fiber. Notable components include the massive integrated rear wing, large vents, and bespoke titanium exhaust system. German enterprise RUF tuned the twin-turbo flat-six, which generates 740 horsepower and 685 lbft of torque. For those who find that a 740-horsepower desert runner needs more power, a second stage upgrade by RUF increases output to 818-horsepower. In terms of performance, the company says the 911 Turbo-based Marsien can make a run from 0 to 62 mph in as little as 2.6 seconds and reach a top speed of 205 mph when equipped with road tires. The Carrera GT-inspired interior features a custom lifted center console and specially designed bucket seats with carbon fiber trim. Customers get to choose between full leather or Alcantara upholstery and can also opt for full customization. Other interior details that stick out are the carbon fiber door sills with bright yellow entry guards and GT-style door lashes. There is an optional rally-spec package. This option enhances suspension travel and increases ground clearance to a fixed ride height. With the press of a button, drivers can adjust the ride height from the standard 4.7 inches to 9.8 inches for handling more challenging terrain. Each model will come with two sets of forged aluminum wheels sporting Michelin tires, a high-performance set for road use, and another with all-terrain rubber for off-roading mayhem. Each build starts at approximately $583,000.

World renowned photographer and artist, David Yarrow, talks about his head-turning visions and his exclusive presence in Cherry Creek BY KEVIN MARR

D

“I was taken hostage for a day with a gun to my head. They were just showing off to the girls, but still… at the time, it was a little scary.”

62

David Yarrow is perched on a white sofa at Relevant Galleries in Cherry Creek North, nonchalantly sharing a near-death experience in the South Sudan. Clad in blue jeans, a white button down, and the slight whiff of tobacco, the esteemed British photographer and artist is on loan from the UK for an appearance at the tony gallery attached to the JW Marriott Denver Cherry Creek. He undoubtedly looks better here on this sunny August afternoon than he did when a pistol was plunged into his skull 8,100 miles away in Africa years earlier.

you’re downplaying it. “If I genuinely believed that I had a talent that other people don’t have, then it’s a lot of rubbish. There are so many talented photographers around,” he states without a hint sarcasm.

Prior to his “Oh, by the way...” kidnapping story, I had just asked him if he was fearless. It seemed a logical question considering some of the company he’s kept during his worldwide adventures. Bears. Lions. Tigers. A wolf from Wall Street. Movie stars. Supermodels. Hollywood icons. “I’m not fearless,” he answers in a softer, almost shy tone. “I’m a father. I’m responsible. We never take risks.”

His body of work speaks for itself, dating all the way back to 1986 in Mexico City when he explains that he got “lucky” when, while working for The Times in London, he snapped a pic of the late, world famous soccer legend, Diego Maradona, hoisting the World Cup after leading Argentina to victory. It’s a lasting image that is still seen everywhere 35 years later.

I push back by citing the video of him waist deep in The Nile, where it’s been documented that there were neighboring crocodiles, to which he explains, “I had to cross the river to get to the island to get the shot. As far as crocodiles go, there was one “odd” crocodile and I had 10 people around me, so that croc is going to get someone else before it gets me.”

So, David Yarrow has been producing headturning visions since the mid-80s, right? Nope. After making a name for himself with the Maradona shot as well as other sporting event coverage, Yarrow put the camera down. “A lot of parental pressure meant that I pursued a career in finance rather than following my passion,” he admits.

This logic might be the only thing I wouldn’t buy from him. He’s everything from charming and authentic to humble and candid. His talent is undeniable. Unless you’re Yarrow. Then

As he tells it, photography wasn’t considered a normal profession back then and, coming from a family background steep in business, it was “Hello, Wall Street.”

FA L L / WI N T ER 2 0 2 1

Whatever. I know he’s going to hate the title of this feature, however he is a Goliath in this industry. Tom Brady doesn’t write the forward of a book for just anyone. Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese don’t autograph just any photography (more on that later).

DAVID YARROW MARADONA Location: MEXICO, 1986 “Wall Street wasn’t my natural backyard, albeit I was there for quite a while.” That is until 2008 when Bernie Madoff’s Ponzi scheme surfaced. Couple that with the Lehman Brothers collapse and Yarrow found himself seeking higher ground and lower risk. At the time, he was running over a billion dollars for a hedge fund. “A lot of our money came from people who got burned by Madoff, so we became an ATM machine. I really couldn’t see myself running money when I was a hostage to things beyond my control, like a crook in Madoff. That’s when I started to spend more time photographing. It was my road to redemption as well. I spent time escaping, thinking, and learning,” he confides. As he explains it, his photography during his Wall Street years was dormant but not dead. Pictures he had taken of Maradona, the Olympics, The Masters and The World Cup continued to sell. He knew the right people, and he had both the cameras and the contacts. There

was still an opening to return. There was still a shot. And, as we’ve come to learn about David, the man gets his shot. So, not too soon after having to deal with one shark in Bernie Madoff, Yarrow found himself in the presence of another – this one of the great white variety off the coast of South Africa. Thankfully, Yarrow was safe from behind his lens. Sadly, the same couldn’t be said for the poor, unsuspecting seal in the photograph – a photograph that was printed around the world. So, was David Yarrow back in business with another famous image seen by the entire planet? “When I got my check, it was for less than what it cost me to take the photograph,” he said with a befuddled look. “I thought, ‘Well, that’s not a particularly good business model.’ Then a lawyer in Houston, Texas, called me up and asked, ‘Are you the kid who took the photograph of the shark? I want one this size. How much will it cost?”

@CHE RRYCRE E K MAG

64

FA L L / WI N T ER 2 0 2 1

In those days, Yarrow explains, there wasn’t a standard way to monetize photography, so he said to the lawyer, “Maybe $6,000.00 or $7,000.00.” The lawyer yelled, “$7,000.00!” “So, I thought I’d gone too high,” Yarrow concedes, “and then the lawyer says, ‘Now I want three of those.’ And that’s when I realized that one person and one collector could pay me more for a picture than all of the newspapers in the world.” That great white wouldn’t be the only project showing its teeth. Much of Yarrow’s work exhibits an edge. And the animal kingdom certainly delivers. Over the past three or four years, David became much more focused on wildlife and the belief that animals hadn’t been photographed in as immersive a manner as they could be. Because of safety concerns, many in his field were shooting from a distance with long lenses. It was a format that he would soon change in his own projects. “We try to look into the soul of the eyes,” he begins. “We’ve also done staged photographs where we’ve incorporated wolves and bears, and it works because wildlife photography in itself is not art. No one needs to see another picture of a giraffe. People know what a giraffe looks like. For it to be art, it must be authentic and different. It has to emotionally engage, and we’ve set a very high bar as to what does that.” That high bar and expectation isn’t lost on him or his team. He’s tough on himself. He’s tough on them, and he expects the very best. He doesn’t tolerate mediocrity, he believes it’s important to be your own biggest critic, and he feels that a lot of photographers are guilty of not being tough enough on themselves. “So, how do you improve on this?” I ask him, while pointing to the giant print hanging above us called Last Orders, a stunning scene of a grizzly bear leaning over a bar for a drink order. “This is sold out, right?” Yarrow, with a smile, answers, “You’ve got to believe that you haven’t taken your best picture yet.”

The week prior, Yarrow and his team were working with Cindy Crawford, re-shooting her famous Pepsi commercial from 1992 in Los Angeles, “My costs for the day are $220,000. If I fail, then that money is wasted. Also, you’re working with an American icon and her team, so that focuses your mind to be as good as you can possibly be. I think I did a better job last week with it than I would have done one or two years ago because you’re always learning from the mistakes that you make in terms of the narratives.” Yarrow’s heroes are storytellers. Steven Spielberg. Martin Scorsese. Ridley Scott. He even quotes Spielberg when he says, “Good ideas start off with bad ideas. That’s why they take so long.” When you witness his recent series, The Wild West 2020, you know there was a lot that went into it. Until now, however, you didn’t know the method behind the madness. “We’ll know the location to begin with,” Yarrow explains. “We scout. We sit and have a few drinks at the bar. And then we order a few more drinks. Then I wander around and have a few smokes, and I think about what we’re going to do. Location scouting is very personal and it’s a great part of the job. We do our homework.” That’s my kind of homework. For David and his team, there are two filters that establish their projects and creative process – authenticity and commerciality. He calls authenticity “the bedrock of art,” and applying it rules out 75 percent of ideas. “I’ve never seen this picture before by another photographer,” referencing Last Orders again on the wall. “But if it does happen then I’ll just say, ‘What a compliment to me.” Meanwhile, commerciality rules out the vast majority of the remaining 25 percent of ideas. Yarrow uses photographing the rats in the sewers of Calcutta, India, as an example of where commerciality is applied. “It has never been done before, but it’s not commercial because who wants to put a rat in a sewer on their wall?,” he asks bluntly. He’s a romanticist. He wants to take pictures that the public is engaged by. Another one of his heroes is Norman Rockwell, an emotionalist, who painted everyday life while telling a story full of emotion that people could relate to and be entertained by. “I think that a lot of stuff that I see at photography fairs, particularly in London, is so begging for attention to be self-important without really considering, ‘Does someone want to put this on their wall?” Yarrow presents with

a quizzical look. “People might turn around and criticize me for that. That’s fine. I don’t care. I’m thick-skinned. Whatever business you’re in, you have to think about what the consumer wants.” David readily admits that his resources have “muscle.” If he wants to go anywhere on the planet to go and get content then he can readily pay for that. If he wants to go to Antarctica – which he is doing – then he can take his own plane to do so. Then you have Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese autographing a Yarrow series with the original “Wolf of Wall Street,” Jordan Belfort, that ended up selling for $200,000. He knows how lucky he is to work with the best of the best and, all other things being equal, it gives him a leg up. Pointing to another one of his works at Relevant Galleries called Bonnie, he comments, “It’s much easier to get ‘her’ to play ‘Bonnie & Clyde.” “Her” is Cara Delvingne, the highest paid model on Earth. Ten years ago, Yarrow concedes that he might be working with a model with a day rate of $3,000, and not the world famous Delvingne.

Yarrow’s muscles perhaps flex their largest when it comes to philanthropy, a very core part of his strategic goal and what he believes in. He’s all about raising a few million dollars a year for various parts of conservation like the Australian wildfires or for more forest rangers in east Africa. He knows it’s the right thing to do, “America, even though you have periods of self-doubt, is the greatest country in the world for collaboration. People want to help each other. If someone has a skill, it’s so easy to collaborate and come together. I find that much easier to do here than in the UK. So, all the top girls and stars in the world will work with me for nothing on the basis that half of the proceeds go to a cause that’s close to them.”

the Cindy Crawford set, with his son also getting into the business, working with his dad, and learning everything he can about the industry. “By and large, I think kids think their dads are losers most of the time,” Yarrow claims with a laugh. “I think the only thing my son thinks is quite cool about me is whenever I’m chatting with Chris Hemsworth. He thinks it’s quite cool that Dad is negotiating over a print with the guy who plays Thor.”

However, in the end, it isn’t about fame, fortune, travel, Cindy Crawford, Tom Brady or anything like that. What it boils down to for him is quite simple, “I identify much more as a father than I do as an artist. My job in life is to be a father.” He’s blessed with two children, both of whom were on

And no one will have to put a gun to David Yarrow’s head for that.

What is also quite cool is Yarrow’s future presence in Cherry Creek North. “People want to see stuff that no one else has seen. Relevant Galleries is very reactive to new work and they want to be featuring my work for years to come.”

Returning to Cherry Creek, It’s All Working Out for Former Bronco DeMarcus Ware BY KEVIN MARR

BE WARE

@CHE RRYCRE E K MAG

D

DeMarcus Ware wanted Peyton Manning’s new jacket. It’s gold. And it comes with more benefits than you’ll ever find from any retailer. On average, only about eight are made each year, and they throw you a big party in northeast Ohio when you get one. Ware thought to himself, “This could be you.” Then Von Miller, who was sitting right next to him, leaned it and said, “D-Ware, this is you, man!” It was August 8th in Canton, Ohio, and Peyton was being inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Ware was on hand to pay tribute to his former Super Bowl teammate and Manning’s ultimate achievement. Traveling from his home in Dallas to Ohio is just one of many appointments on a jam-packed schedule for the former nine-time Pro Bowler who twice led the NFL in sacks and finished with 138.5 sacks in his unbelievable career. Since retiring in 2017, Ware has been as busy off the field as he was on it for 12 years with the Cowboys and the Broncos. Present day sees the 39-year-old with countless irons in the fire, headlined by a signature health and fitness project that has brought him back to an old haunt in Cherry Creek, “I lived at the JW Marriott for an entire offseason before I got a home here,” he says with a big smile, “I think about Denver being God’s country. I miss the atmosphere, the mountains, hunting, fishing, driving to Estes Park and Garden of the Gods, and visiting the Denver Botanic Gardens. I don’t think people realize how many things there are to do here. Denver changed my life.” So, what’s he doing back in town?

72

FA L L / WI N T ER 2 0 2 1

The Auburn, Alabama, native explains, “I developed a gym outside of Dallas called 3Volt Fitness, and it uses the methods that I trained with when I played professional football, but I’ve made it more approachable. I also put that same type of feel into an app called D2W (Driven 2 Win), which uses augmented reality with 3-D models. It’s a virtual trainer in your pocket.” At his former home away from, Ware finds himself full circle at JW Marriott Denver Cherry Creek where he’s conducting a 45-minute bodyweight workout, dispensing all the knowledge this elite athlete had learned throughout his career, and then some. After football, he had to ask himself what he was going to do to stay fit. He became a certified personal trainer, learning about muscle activation therapy, functional movement screening and everything else about the body. “At the end of my career, I could hardly walk and that’s why I retired,” he shares, “But then I thought about all the great stuff I learned when I played, like how to recover, how to eat, and how to motivate yourself every day to build a better you. I know how to recover from a huge injury on Sunday and then get ready for Wednesday’s practice for the next game on Sunday. This is what I’m sharing for everyone to have.”

how to refocus when things aren’t going the right way, how to train your body and how to implement that in your life and on the field to make yourself a well-rounded player.”

Ware is sharing more than just NFL trade secrets for those who want the ultimate in fitness and wellness. He’s also lending his thoughts and expertise through broadcasting with the likes of NFL Films, the Dallas Cowboys, and a feature called Intersection, which is a web series spotlighting influential North Texans’ personalities. He also prides himself on helping other players currently on the Cowboys, “I like to teach, so I come in and mentor the guys on mindset, how to focus,

Talk about well-rounded. Ware, himself, couldn’t be more active. He’s obsessed with golf, which he plays every other day. D2W has him constantly filming for the app, and he’s also been bitten by the photography bug where he can’t put his camera down, “a lot of people don’t know that about me.” This is the script for a Hall of Famer in life, let alone for what he accomplished on the gridiron. DeMarcus knows it’s coming. Von Miller knows it’s coming. The NFL, past and present, know it’s coming. Ware is eligible for the Hall of Fame this coming year, 2022, and, if there’s one name on the ballot that would be a favorite to make it on the first shot, it’s this man, “The atmosphere in Canton was remarkable. Being on a team where you put on this gold jacket and you’re enshrined for life is a surreal thing to even think about, but you can’t let it overwhelm you.” When Ware and Peyton connect, they reminisce about the locker room, preparing for games, being captains for the Broncos, and the ups and downs of a rollercoaster season. This is what’s truly missed when football goes away for so many players. The brotherhood. The camaraderie. The friendships. In this latest chapter, Ware is far from lacking in relationships. His mission is to help as many people as possible and, so far, it’s all working out. Because that’s what DeMarcus Ware does. He works out. And soon, he’ll have a new gold jacket courtesy of Canton to share with all of his friends. More at 3voltfit.com/ @3voltfit driventowin.com/ @driventowin@demarcusware

FOR THE HEALTH OF IT Dining out in Cherry Creek, without derailing your diet BY BETSY MARR, WITH JENNIFER LUCAS

Dining is one of the most convivial, social, and enjoyable ways to spend time with loved ones. It’s also one of the easiest ways to derail your healthy eating habits. But that doesn’t have to be the case. Armed with the right knowledge and a little planning, you can enjoy the art of dining out and stay true to your health and wellness goals. We’ve rounded up our favorite healthy Cherry Creek restaurants, the best menu options in the neighborhood and even consulted with a health coach to take the guesswork out of dining. @CHE RRYCRE E K MAG

9 HEALTHY MEALS YOU CAN ORDER IN CHERRY CREEK

We’ve done the research, and these meals really are both healthy and delicious. Try our picks for Cherry Creek’s best nutritious dishes.

Hapa: Colorado Hamachi

1

There are few things lighter and more refreshing than sashimi, and Hapa’s beloved appetizer dish does the art form proud. The fresh jalapenos, yuzu soy and cilantro make it over-the-top flavorful. Easily a favorite. 3030 East 2nd Avenue / hapasushi.com

2

Cucina Colore: Mista Salad

The combination of fresh vegetables, a hint of red onion and the restaurant’s legendary red wine vinaigrette make this salad a winner every single time. Add a protein to make it heartier. We love the grilled chicken. 3041 East 3rd Avenue / cucinacolore.com

Narrative: Beet Salad

Narrative’s Beet Salad is a work of art. As beautiful as it is tasty, this healthy option is always a hit. With golden and red beets, the fresh, organic, locally-sourced dish is exploding with flavor. 222 Milwaukee Street (in The Jacquard) narrativecherrycreek.com

3

Toro Latin Kitchen + Lounge: Amarillo Ceviche

5 4

Hillstone: Kale Salad + Protein

Hillstone’s Kale Salad is a fan favorite, and with good cause. Cashews, sesame miso vinaigrette and fresh mint have this dish exploding with flavor. There’s a side salad option, which we love paired with grilled chicken, or the heartier entrée salad that comes with Hiramasa Sashimi. Either way, you’re winning. 303 Josephine Street hillstonerestaurant.com

Le Bilboquet: La Salade Niçoise au Thon Poêlé

Known for its decadent dishes, one might assume that staying healthy at a French restaurant such as Le Bilboquet would be a tall order. But that’s simply not the case. This Cherry Creek favorite has several incredible healthy options and our pick is the Niçoise Salad. Paired with seared tuna, this twist on the classic French dish lives up to the hype. 299 St. Paul Street lebilboquetdenver.com

This Richard Sandoval restaurant is known for its perfect mix of Pan-Latin cuisine with South American, Japanese, and Chinese influences. With a dedicated ceviche bar, it’s no wonder that the Amarillo Ceviche is perhaps our favorite item on the menu. Fresh Hamachi, Aji, cucumber and mango are marinated in lime juice for an unbelievable explosion of flavor. 150 Clayton Lane (in the JW Marriott) / torodenver.com

A HEALTH COACH WEIGHS IN 7

Keeping our wellness in check while dining out can be challenging. We consulted with certified health coach Jennifer Lucas to find out how she stays true to her eating plans when she’s enjoying a local restaurant. These simple tips can make all the difference in your health, and don’t require you giving up dining out.

Piatti: Pan Roasted Salmon

We love Piatti for its decadent, traditional Italian dishes, but those are not the only delicious choices at this longtime Cherry Creek staple. Try the Pan Roasted Salmon. With artichokes, roasted fennel, and Calabrian chili, you’ll be glad you did.

SPEAK UP Ask your server about the quality of the meat and seafood. Is it organic, grass-fed, wild, and pasture raised? If they don’t know then kindly acknowledge that the answer is no. Restaurants want you to know the money and effort they put in and there is a big difference between proteins raised naturally and those that are subjected to hormones and toxic chemicals.

190 St. Paul Street denver.piatti.com

KEEP SUSHI SIMPLE Most importantly, skip all the bells and whistles. Clean simple sushi and sashimi can be healthy. Due to possible exposure to heavy metals, limit to once every other week. That said, if you aren’t eating rice on the regular, I think you should enjoy your rolls with white rice. Brown rice overtakes the taste. You deserve to live your life. Ease up on the soy sauce. It’s bloating and inorganic soy is toxic to your hormones. Learn to savor the taste of the fish.

Little Ollie’s: Bamboo Steamed Veggies + Garlic Sauce

Asian restaurants can be a doubleedged sword. They’re one of the easiest places to find healthy options, but they’re also one of the easiest for consuming hidden calories and sugar in their plentiful, flavorful sauces. At Little Ollie’s, the Bamboo Steamed Veggies with Garlic Sauce are always a safe, and delicious, bet. 2360 East 3rd Avenue littleollies.com

9

Local Jones: Beet Hummus

The Halcyon’s newest restaurant is a perfect option for health-conscious eaters, as it focuses on fresh, local ingredients and inventive spins on old classics. We love the Beet Hummus – replete with crudité and house made flat bread. 249 Columbine Street (in The Halcyon) / localjones.com

FOOD COMBINATIONS ARE KEY Carbohydrates are not the enemy they’ve been made out to be, but avoid eating them alone. Always add protein and fat, even when snacking. Ideally, your meals should consist of a carbohydrate, fat, fiber and protein.

8

PORTION CONTROL Nine times out of ten, restaurant portions are too big. Consider sharing your meal, or if that is not possible, ask for a to-go box and put half the meal to the side right away. You’ll be surprised how satisfied you are with half the food you ordered. EAT YOUR WATER Optimal digestion is key to a strong immune system, weight loss and clear skin. Hydration makes this possible so eating water rich foods like bell peppers, cucumber, lettuce and strawberries keep your digestive tract flowing. FAT DOESN’T MAKE YOU FAT. SUGAR DOES. Some people believe that the source of the sugar doesn’t matter because our bodies break it down into glucose either way, while others believe that naturally occurring sugar is okay in low quantities. I think it’s all bio-individual and glucose monitoring is a great way to measure your personal resistance levels! Glucose testing can be done easily from home, and inexpensive monitors are available on Amazon. I’m of the belief that the more natural and organic forms of sugar the better and that we should avoid all processed food and artificial sweeteners. SLOW DOWN Experts say you should chew your food 20 times before swallowing. Digestion starts with the enzymes in your saliva, and proper digestion is key to a healthy gut. LAY OFF THE LIQUOR Truth be told, no amount of alcohol is healthy for you. Old studies have been debunked. Avoiding it all together is ideal, but I know that’s unrealistic for a lot of people. Therefore, be mindful of when and where you are drinking. Challenge yourself to abstain more than you normally do and take note of how you feel. The sober curious movement has given rise to some great nonalcoholic drinks made with adaptogens and vibe enhancing botanicals. Explore these choices on your local menus!
